WORDS BY ROSE HODGINS
Going From two Incomes Down to One & expecting a baby on the way?
I
know what you may be thinking how can 2-1 = 3 and no, I am not bad at maths! I am trying to get across the worry I have for new families. Going from two incomes down to one and adding an extra person into the mix is very financially stressful. All expecting mums and dads are probably thinking ‘we will get the baby bonus’ which may be true, but Centrelink advises; “You may be paid for up to 13 weeks starting from the first day of eligibility. However, you will not be paid for those days you do not meet all the eligibility requirements. If you are eligible for the whole 13 weeks, you may receive a maximum
of $1,595.23 for your first child or a maximum of $532.35 for other children. I am going to ask a very strong question. How would you cope with NO income? I can hear you all now, ‘we will never have NO income. I have a wonderful partner that will support the new family’. This too may be true, but let me tell you about an actual client. You and your partner are sitting at home on the weekend hugging your new baby and you notice your partner is tired and lethargic. They are unable to get out of bed and you assume it is the cold weather taking its toll, then;
• A week later and you see your Doctor. • They give you antibiotics and you must go get a blood test. • Two days later, you are in hospital with chronic pain. • Your bloods come back, you have Leukemia. • You now face over two months of Chemotherapy in Sydney Westmead Hospital. • You have over three months recovery in front of you, unable to work. • This adds up to over five months of care and treatment. • By this time, the Government payment is gone, so is your sick leave, holidays and long service leave, if you
had any. How do you plan to receive income in that time to cover your debts, household bills, food, medical bills, the new baby and travel to and from Sydney for treatment? You can start a ‘Fund Me page’ or hold a ‘Trivia Night’ and hope people you know can afford to offer their own money to you… OR is having a family, at any stage, enough of a wakeup call for you to get some help to protect you, your partner, and your family, in case the unforeseeable happens? Got a family; have a plan! See you soon

HOW TO FIND
YOURSELF CAN YOU EVER REALLY LOSE “YOU”?
Y
ou’ve no doubt heard people say before that they need to ‘find themselves’. It’s true that in the hustle of modern living we can all feel a little lost at times. Take heart—finding our Self is nowhere near as tricky as finding those car keys when we’re already running late! Contrary to popular belief, the process of finding one’s Self does not actually involve overseas trips to tall mountains (although that might be very nice), or doing lots of yoga (also very nice), or even drinking herbal tea (not really my thing). The process
is so much simpler than all that. The good news is that one’s Self is not lost after all; it never was. Self is often merely pushed aside, squashed down or simply forgotten about in favour of other pressures. Genuine and genuinely demanding pressures. To find Self again is basically to give our Self some priority in as much of our life as possible. Finding and being our authentic Self is never further away than three little but powerful and life-changing steps: 1. Think for yourself. (Note. This is very different and not at all the same as thinking only of yourself.
2. Speak for yourself. 3. Do what is right for you given the responsibilities you have in life. Find that balance. So often we allow our thoughts to be influenced by others. Opinions are everywhere so it can be difficult initially to filter those opinions out and ask ourselves (and value!) “what do I really think?”. Too often we allow our perceptions of how other people might react to us to influence what we say or the choices we make for our own lives. Consequently, we live our lives feeling choked up and trapped. The only
‘Out of your vulnerabilities will come your strength’ – Sigmund Freud
way to free ourselves from the chains we’ve wrapped around our own lives is to speak and live our truth. It really is remarkable just how liberating truth is! But somehow, I don’t think I’m the first to have said that… Thinking for Self. Speaking for Self. Doing what is right for Self. That’s all there really is to it (tall mountains optional). Ps. Finding those car keys? I can’t actually help you with that.

WORDS BY DENISE MILLS
Minimalism:
Is Less More? Let’s throw out our stuff and live like celebrities! The idea isn’t as silly as it sounds.
E
lizabeth Gilbert in her memoir Eat Pray Love sets the scene with a breakdown due to her unhappy marriage, plus the strain of being both the main breadwinner and housekeeper of the pair’s oversized home with too many rooms. Matthew McConaughey – that actor who never wears a shirt – has been known to live for extended lengths of time in a simple trailer by the beach. Oprah made a TV episode out of selling her beloved rugs and paintings as she “packed up paradise” to move to a much smaller home. With the celebrities seemingly “on board”, it’s apparent that minimalism is no longer seen as born out 36
MAY 11–17, 2017
of necessity, but an intentional move to lead a happier life, by feeling less tied-down to “stuff.” These celebrities now face a new conundrum where they all stand around in empty rooms discussing what to do with their money. Well, not really, but it’s an amusing visual. Here in O-town, as far as overall house size is concerned, residents are still generally of the opinion “bigger is better.” This is despite the increase in single parent families, and the fact the average Australian couple has only two children. Paul Neich from Williams Machin Real Estate confirmed: “The ‘four bedders are still the favourite by far!”. He added that there were
still empty nesters who wanted to down-size – the older couples whose kids have all grown up and left home – but that has always been the case. While most of us in Orange are seemingly not interested in downsizing our homes, many are opting for minimalistic design on the inside. The reasons go well beyond the idea that less “stuff” means less to clean, less to maintain, and less to feel “tied-down” to, and can ever extend to smarter business. Danica Bunch, owner of luxury Bed & Breakfast accommodation Stebel Cottage in Millthorpe says that minimalism can help make a space more versatile.
“Stebel Cottage has been decorated based on what people require for comfort and aesthetics but no more, nothing in excess. This not only highlights the antique furniture, but it helps people to enjoy the cottage in their own way – from weddings to work visits.” Creative Director of One x One Interiors, Christine Ghrayche, says that minimalism can simply be a matter of smarter design, and is one of her “personal favourites.” “Minimalism is a style that has timeless appeal. It’s all about showing restraint in design, as opposed to just having a near empty space. It’s about careful editing, clean lines and simplicity of
colour and texture.” Christine adds that minimalist design can pose hidden challenges. “It may seem simple, but minimalism is surprisingly deceptive because every detail matters. There’s a fine line between cold and clinical, and warm and inviting.” While the old adage that “less is more” is still up for debate, there are plenty of good reasons to give minimalist living a try. Trends aside, a less cluttered space can highlight certain features, can provide more versatility and a more classic, timeless look. Celebrity or not, maybe it’s worth giving minimalistic design a shot?

HEALTH & WELLBEING WORDS BY ZANNA MUNRO
Healing, Warming
MEET ZANNA
THE COOLER WEATHER IS WELL AND TRULY HERE AND THAT’S A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO NOURISH OUR BODIES WITH DELICIOUS, WARMING FOODS.
T
here are so many healing foods we can incorporate in to our diets during the cooler months. My slow cooker is definitely in high demand at this time of year. I love slow cooked meals, they’re so simple to prepare and make me feel really nourished. If you don’t have a slow cooker yet, do yourself a favour and purchase one! I promise you won’t regret it. Bone broth is one of my favourite things to make in my slow cooker. Broths are becoming more and more popular; you can now order a mug at some local cafes instead of your morning coffee! Although, broths definitely aren’t a fad. They have been prepared for hundreds of years, and are one of the most healing foods you can consume. Chicken soup isn’t just good for the soul! There’s a good reason that Mum typically cooks a big batch of chicken soup when we’re feeling unwell.
RECIPE
Bone broth or stock was a way our ancestors made use of every part of the animal. Bones and marrow, tendons and ligaments, that you can’t eat directly can be boiled them simmered. The simmering processes causes the bones and ligaments to release healing compounds including collagen, proline, glycine and glutamine, which have the power to heal and transform our health. The collagen in bone broth helps to heal your gut and reduces intestinal inflammation. Bone broth is also rich in minerals that support the immune system. It’s packed with calcium and magnesium, which is essential for bone repair. The rising rates of diabetes and obesity have made people aware of the long term effects nutrition has on the body. This is enticing many people to go back to basics and eat food as close to its natural state as possible. If you’re not feeling brave enough quite yet to sip from a mug of broth
instead of your morning coffee, it makes a great flavoursome base for many dishes such as soups, stews, risottos and even curries. Another wonderful thing about bone broth is that it is very cost effective and super simple to prepare. A classic bone broth contains 1.5 KG of organic beef bones, 2 sticks of celery, 2 medium carrots, 2 medium onions, 1 bunch of thyme, 2.25 litres of water, 4 tbsp apple cider vinegar and ground pepper. The method is simple and the good news is the broth basically cooks itself. Simply – 1. Preheat the oven to 190 degrees Celsius and spread the chopped bones over a large roasting sheet and cook for 45 – 50 minutes. Transfer bones to a large slow cooker 2. Place all the veggies and herbs in the slow cooker and pour over enough water to cover. Add the vinegar and a generous grinding of
black pepper then cover the pan and bring to the boil. Reduce to a gentle simmer and leave to cook, covered, for 12 – 24 hours, regularly topping up the water to ensure it is always covering the bones. The longer the broth cooks the richer it will be. 3. Cool the broth to room temperate then strain through a piece of muslin (cheesecloth) into a large bowl. Use the broth immediately or portion it into freezer – proof containers and store in the fridge for 5 days or in the freezer for up to 5 months. As I previously mentioned this broth can be added into many dishes. I have included a recipe for you below, which is definitely a favourite of mine at this time of year!

LIVE MUSIC
MUSIC THROUGH THE AGES
Sydney Symphony Orchestra and conductor Toby Thatcher takes listeners on a whirlwind tour through four centuries of classical music. It begins with brass music composed for the Basilica of St Mark in Venice at the height of the Renaissance, and ends with the famous rising tones of the ‘Dresden Amen’ and Luther’s great hymn ‘A Mighty Fortress is Our God’. This brilliant performance will take place at Orange Civic Theatre on 24 May.
MAY–JULY 2017 PRESENCE: TWO VISIONS OF LANDSCAPE
Artists Ros Auld & Claire Primrose come together to explore an authentic connection to the natural world with their upcoming exhibition Presence: Two Visions of Landscape. Ros Auld aims to express both the strength and fragility of nature using materials from the earth, with an interplay between the monumental forms and delicate surface textures in her ceramic works. With landscape as her source, she is interested in the accumulation of recollected impressions rather than particular sites. Claire Primrose’s recent work is similarly inspired and informed by many different locations from the Australian landscape. Using soil and water samples from field trips, she recreates the surfaces, textures and colours of particular places, although each work is a culmination of many different images, places and experiences. The exhibition is at the Orange Regional Art Gallery from 27 May to 2 July 2017.

TODDLERS TO TENS Local musician Marc Fitzgerald-Cook has started a novel approach to getting young children to enjoy and explore music, with new “Toddlers to Tens” groups, for children under 10 years old. “It’s been very popular!” Marc explained. “It’s one of those things where I wondered why I didn’t think of it earlier!” The classes run with a maximum of 8 kids per group, providing them the opportunity to experience a wide-range of musical 44

instruments which are all provided. “We have drums, tambourines, shakers, ukuleles and guitars. The under 5-year-olds love bashing on the drums!” The group started when Marc was providing some one-on-one music tutoring. “The father of the girl I was tutoring wanted his younger children to experience music, too. I ran a small group and included my 2-year-old son and it went
really well.” Mark runs three groups, one for ages 2 – 5 years, one for 6 – 10yrs, and a third group has just started for the under 4 year olds. “Last week we busted out a watereddown version of AC/DC,” he said. “These classes are the most fun I have all week!” Each class is $10 per student. To book in contact Marc on 0437 607 575, or visit him at 6 Strings Guitar Studio, upstairs at the Orange Arcade.
