No matter how changed the world has become or how sophisticated the means of communication, young people still find each other and still take Cole Porter’s advice. To-day, they may come together on the internet or be in constant touch with each other by mobile phone.

Kath had a great talent which proved to be an asset when it came to making friends.

Things were not always so easy, but, nevertheless, to quote another old song-“Love will find a way.” I was talking to my group of old friends about what was known then as their ‘courting days.’ It convinced me that, no matter what we call it, human nature never really changes. Mary, who is well over ninety, lived in South Australia in her youth, and readily confessed that she had had her eye on her future husband for some time before they formally met. “He used to travel in the same railway carriage as I did between Largs Bay and Port Adelaide. I was the only girl in a place where there so many boys and what a great time I had at dances! Although we met when I was 21, we had to wait five years to be married because the Depression was just starting and we had no money.” Back in those days, parents were

“I had great difficulty going to dances because my parents just didn’t believe in them,” admitted Phyllis. “The jazz age was just coming in and it was so exciting. I managed to be at one dance though, and that night I met my husband.” Love often came swiftly, as Fran experienced. “The first time I met my husband was at a dance,” she said. “He told his mate that as soon as he saw me he wanted to propose and he did propose that same night! Of course I accepted him straight away and we were married 12 months later." Dances were not the only place that young people fell in love. Hannah had an entirely different experience. “My husband owned coursing dogs and I met him exercising them. We used to go to dances though. I loved the waltzes, the Lancers and the Shot-ese.”

Kath, who had grown up on a property outside Cassilis, had another perspective. “People don’t realise nowadays how hard it was to get in touch with someone you were courting, especially out in the bush,” But nothing could stop the young people from getting together. Dances were held in people’s houses. Betty thoroughly enjoyed these as they were always family affairs. ”I can remember the times that Mum and Dad and the kids would all go down to the Government Dam on Saturdays. The houses had dirt floors and that was where we learned to dance. People would push all the furniture back to the walls and someone would play the violin and the accordian. It might be 12 or 1 o’clock before we would walk all the way back home.” Ossie remembered that householders

”My future husband used to hang around the piano and I thought that, because he liked playing jazz too, that was all he was interested in. After about a year we were married.” The local picture show was always a great place for young lovers, especially on a Saturday night. “I was only 15 when I first met my husband. I loved going to the pictures,” said Dot, “And later I found out that he was the projectionist!” If you had a car, life was a lot easier, although very few people could afford one in those days. Kath admitted to some difficulties even with a car, “We had a 1936 Vauxhall and I thought it was wonderful, even when it rained and we all got soaking wet.” They may have had less freedom and even less money than to-day’s generation, but again, to quote an old song, “Love makes the world go round”. And it did, no matter where or when you lived.
