TESTIMONIAL LA CASCINA
Kerry and I would like to take the opportunity to thank Gary, Chris and Margaret from Blowes Real Estate. Selling our beautiful home and land, which we have invested a lot of time and energy into, was a big decision for us and it was time to downsize. We approached Gary Blowes and the sales team from Blowes Real Estate, and from the outset everything was explained to us, including how the property would be marketed and the fees we would be charged. Gary, Chris and Marg did many an inspection, walked around paddocks in the rain, nothing was too much trouble for them. We received feedback, phone calls, and emails and all our questions were answered promptly. And having sold our home, they quickly found us a new one that suits our needs. We were thrilled with how they dealt with both our sale and purchase, we had a lot on our plate as it was a massive move, and they all made it extremely easy for us. If you’re looking for sincere, hardworking agents then look no further than Blowes Real Estate.

HistoryTALKING with HELEN McANULTY
Drover
`And he sees the vision splendid of the sunlit plains extended, And at night the wond’rous glory of the everlasting stars.’ These words from 'Clancy of the Overflow' and many others written by A.B.(Banjo) Paterson, were to have a great influence on the life of a young boy, growing up in Sydney in the 1930s. As an Oral Historian I have been privileged to talk to many people about their lives and this has convinced me that behind every face is a story worth telling. Some years ago while living in the small town of Gulgong, I spoke to a man whose story certainly lived up to my expectations. It was Trevor Holgate’s meeting with the great poet which was to guide the course his future life would take. Trevor, was born in 1927 in Sydney. His father was a compositor who worked on the Sydney papers, 'The Evening News,' 'The Bulletin' and, later, 'Truth and Sportsman,' where he met and became friendly with Banjo Paterson. “Dad used to work early on Sunday mornings to get the paper out,” Trevor told me recently. “Banjo would be at the races and then go and do some of his writing up at the paper. When my older brother took the car in to collect Dad, I wangled my way in too and that was how I met Mr Paterson. Dad had all his books, autographed copies, and I think that’s how I learned to read.” Trevor loved the tales and verses about the outback. Although he was living in Sydney in Lakemba, there was still plenty of bush in those days and he grew up with horses from the time he was six.
At fourteen, he decided he’d had enough of the city and went bush to find Paterson’s country. He travelled by train to Ivanhoe to take up a job he’d managed to find through a wool firm. “I thought I was at the end of the earth when I reached Condobolin,” he said, but he kept on and began to “learn the game” as a general hand, milking, killing, gardening, polishing the Boss’s boots and helping the cook make soap.” From there, after a brief visit to Sydney after his father’s death, he was back to the outback at Buckeroo, north of Coolibah, scrubcutting, and seeing nothing but “scrub, kangaroos and goats.” “It was there that I lived in a tent with a fella from Gulgong. I’d never heard of Gulgong then, but he was a cracking bloke, until he got on the grog. He was a great cook when he was sober but when he had the ‘horrors’, it put me off drink for the rest of my life!” Trevor was still learning when he went to Brewarrina, a quiet little town where his experiences with aborigines, being the “only white man in the huts”, taught him a great deal.” “They showed me how to make a good damper, a bit about tracking and horsemanship.” It was after this that Trevor really began to live out his early dreams when he took a droving job. The big drought which had begun in 1939 did not end until 1947. “We had no trucks then, so we walked
the stock into the rail and if they didn’t make it, just too bad.” It was on these droving trips that the men often suffered from “Barcoo sickness” and a skin condition they christened “Barcoo Rot”, which may have been scurvy due to the lack of fresh fruit and vegetables. “With droving,” Trevor says, "The stock come first, the dogs and horses next and the men last. We carried tea, sugar, onions and potatoes and the cook even made jellies and bread and butter pudding from tinned milk. We got up before daylight and went to bed at nightfall. With sheep, you could surround them with ropes at night but with cattle we were on two or three hour watches.” Talking with Trevor Holgate, I felt that he really could be Clancy, "Droving down the Cooper, where the western drovers go.” His story is so full of bush experiences and the knowledge he has accumulated over his years in the outback. Once, in 1947, near Walgett with boss drover, Ray McMillan, he had appendicitis and spent a month “holidaying in the hospital”, recovering with the help of recently introduced penicillin. They battled flood, black soil like glue, accidents, grasshoppers and pleuropneumonia in the herd. His greatest mates were his dogs and his little horse, Toby. “There is no greater satisfaction than to pick up a mob who could barely walk and bring them home, fat. You had to
know where you were going for the feed and you had to look out for it.” He regards today’s tendency towards motorised droving with some distrust. He was happiest on his own with a mob, his dogs and his horses and this is what he finally did. ”I walked 150 cows over 300 miles on my own,” he told me. And I think he was never happier. He had found his boyhood dream. One of the exciting aspects of oral history is that a chance remark can be the start of an entirely new diversion. Trevor Holgate mentioned that when he had his appendix removed in Walgett in 1947, he was given a spinal injection by Dr. Ernst Schwartz. Wasn’t this, I thought, very unusual in 1947? So I began an entirely new research and discovered that the procedure had been introduced into Australia in 1901. Some training was needed but it was comparatively easy to perform. However, there were complications, such as lowered blood pressure, but it was used by non-specialists until the late fifties. The crowning achievement of this research was to uncover this little story of a Russian doctor who was with an expedition to the Antarctic in 1962. He became his own surgeon, anaesthetist and patient. It was told in these words: “Doctor was only one, assistant was mechanic. He take position that he saw his own body and use a mirror when open body. He made 12 cm cut through which he find appendix. The operation take two hours. After five days he feel good.” And he had no one to thank but himself ! (Quote from Russian/American website.)
