Finding the truth in the shades of grey — JONATHAN ROE —

Amateur historian and tour guide Craig Lawler reckons the real gold to be found in the Central West is in our past. Come all of you Lachlan men and a sorrowful tale I’ll tell, Concerning of a bushranger who to misfortune fell. His name it was Ben Hall, and a man of high renown, Who was taken from his homestead and like a dog shot down.” So rings the opening bars of the Australian folk ballad The Streets of Forbes, the popular song telling of the death of one of Australia’s most well-known bushrangers. This is the version of the story that most Australians might know, but like anything else when you dig a little deeper, things become less black and white, a lot more complicated and certainly a lot more interesting. “I feel I’ve got to correct the record,” says Craig Lawler, standing in Canowindra’s main street, the location of many exploits attributed to the bushranger gang of Frank Gardiner, Johnny Gilbert, Ben Hall and accomplices. Craig, a natural storyteller with an incredibly detailed knowledge of Australian colonial history, is the founder and operator of Blind Freddy’s Bushranger Tours. A journalist, teacher and former rock band roadie, Craig left Sydney for the small Central West village of Gooloogong in 2006 where he became fascinated with the history on his doorstep. “I started researching about these stories and realised they were an absolute goldmine of great Australian colonial history,” says Craig. “Our ‘Wild West’ in Australia is here in the Central West of NSW. And these stories are rich! They are fantastic stories, interesting characters, interesting times — the country transitioned from a penal colony to a society it is an interesting time and Canowindra is right in the thick of it.” After devouring books on the topic such as Frank Clune’s Wild Colonial Boys, Craig started more detailed research, made possible thanks to the National Library of Australia’s vast, publicly available resource: the Trove Newspaper Archive. 6 MARCH 4 — 10, 2021

“With the newspaper archives so easily available and word searchable and date searchable and the ease of access, it means I’m able to test all these stories,” says Craig, who quickly found that the popular depictions of Ben Hall don’t always fit with the historical record. “Some of the stories make sense and some of them don’t make sense, but the deification of Ben is a cultural phenomenon rather than a historic one,” says Craig. “He is a powerful cultural figure and I see the power of these things… and I’m of that political stripe myself, I like rebellious figures, but for me to tell these stories properly I have to bring it back to first principles, so to speak, and look at what actually happened at the time through as many primary resources as I can…

“People are very keen to ascribe all the romantic heroic aspects of the bushrangers of the period to Ben Hall when it’s not really his mantle to take. Ben is part of the gang, he’s there and his story is interesting and I don’t mean to demean him, but in order to tell the story truthfully I have to point out he is not the leader of the gang, he is not always heroic, he is not always a nice guy, he’s not always a tempering influence on the rest of the gang and he never killed anyone because he’s a s--t shot!” Too often Australian history is presented in a cartoonish, twodimensional way, says Craig, when the real story is invariably more nuanced and more interesting.

And with a figure like Ben Hall looming so large in our cultural consciousness it means other characters in the story get less attention than they deserve, such as Frank Gardiner, Johnny Gilbert and the oft-maligned Sir Fredrick Pottinger — the disgraced baronet who doggedly pursued Gardiner and Hall’s gang without success. “The shades of grey are far more interesting to me and I think it does these people a disservice on the whole to not give everyone a fair shake,” says Craig, whose affection for some of the characters in his stories comes through in the telling. “Within these stories Pottinger is a rouge, Gardiner is a rouge, Ben Hall is a Rogue, Gilbert is a rogue — they are all villainous! There are no heroes in these stories really, that’s why I find them interesting characters… Gardiner and Pottinger are my favourite characters, because their lives are the most interesting. They provide me with the fodder to tell stories and that’s what I’m doing — I’m a storyteller. I just like to know what happened and convey that to people with a sense of entertainment, but also accuracy.” Craig established Blind Freddy’s Bushranger Historical Tours eight years ago, and today offers short walking tours in Canowindra to fullday explorations of the major bushranger sites in the district. He’s also about to release his own historical podcast under the Blind Freddy brand. “I think we don’t make as much as we perhaps should about our colonial history in NSW and certainly in this part of the world,” says Craig. “I’m glad I do what I do. I really love it as you can probably tell. And I think it’s good to be able to tell these stories in the places where they happened — not many people do that and it is a unique experience. You come on these tours and go to the actual places where the actual events happened… and you get to hear someone bang on at you about what actually happened!”

LIFE WITHOUT FACEBOOK ETC. I’ve never been on Facebook, Twitter or any other social media platform, I’ve never really felt the plusses outweighed the minuses enough. That said, our business has various social media accounts, mainly because “you just have to have them” these days. Thankfully, I have nothing to do with them and my staff operate them for us. Be that as it may, I’ve decided to cancel all our social media accounts and live life without Facebook etc. Fortunately, we still have the freedom to make choices like this and despite the fact that “you just have to have it”, I for one, don’t want it and because I’m the boss and I can choose that option.

My reasons for taking this step are numerous, but the main one is I see too many people using social media for nasty purposes. Over the years I’ve heard of many people being badly treated on social media, some even castigated unreasonably, I myself have been misrepresented at times when people don’t get their own way and then take it out on me publicly over social media. I have friends who have been subjected to unfair, unreasonable and untrue claims about them for a couple of years now, and all for reasons that have nothing to do with them personally, there’s just someone out there that had their toys taken away from them and for some reason, decided my friends were responsible and their attacks on social media have been relentless. The claims have been savage, incorrect and downright cruel. The worse thing however, is victims can’t do much about it unless they want to engage in expensive legal action, which in today’s world can’t promise justice anyway. We’ve all heard stories about people who have been victims like

this. One problem is that it is so easy to use part truths or put things out of context to make a case. We all know there’s usually two sides to every story and unless you get both sides, it’s impossible to make a fair judgement. People who use social media in this way, well I just have no respect for them whatsoever. I feel the same way when I see many of the social media comments against news stories. People are fully entitled to their opinion and when put in a fair, reasonable and respectful manner, that’s probably OK, but many comments are just downright spiteful. I don’t want to encourage that sort of behaviour or comments. My understanding is that Facebook started with noble intentions and for noble purposes, but like so many things, it has evolved to the point now where it is used for many reasons other than those at the beginning, and the plusses have since been outweighed by the minuses. Clearly money and profits are now a priority for companies like these. That’s a shame, I can only imagine the good someone could do if they had a heart for doing good and had that much power and influence to work with, I wish I did. The world is moving at a very rapid pace, especially with technology. For me, and at my age, I’m happy to leave it younger people to run at that pace. We are also making changes now to just have our Orange City Life website carry our publications in full online each week. On there, you find full digital copies of Orange City Life, Newswatch and Orange Property Market. I’m looking forward to life without having to worry about using Facebook.

World- Leading Daughters and Dads Program enjoyed in Orange

— MELISE DAVIS — entral West girls and their dads are enjoying the opportunity to participate in a program that aims to give them the skills and confidence to play sport.

The award-winning Daughters and Dads Active and Empowered program, delivered by the University of Newcastle, in partnership with the NSW Government and Orange City Council, targets fathers as the agents of change to improve girls’ sports skills and wellbeing. The program was rolled out State-wide as part of the NSW Government’s women in sport strategy, ‘Her Sport Her Way.’ The inaugural program held in 2019 was a major success, this year seems no different, with a great roll up and full room on their opening week. Participant Matt Gamble was eager to join the program after his wife found the information

He and his six-year-old daughter Sophie have enjoyed the program and encourage Dad’s out there to get involved. “Sophie really looks forward to it every week, she is engaged the whole time” said Matt. “I initially just wanted to do more stuff with Sophie. The barren, dystopian world of the new science fiction thriller 2067 is a far cry from the tree-lined streets of Orange, but the Aussie independent film attracting worldwide attention does have a local connection.

In the last two years, film production and distribution company Arcadia has made Orange home, and recently they’ve taken over a large warehouse space on Endsleigh Avenue with big plans for the future. 2067 is the first cinema release for the production company and one that has surprised everybody with its success. Set in the year 2067, Earth has been ravaged by climate change and humanity is forced to live on artificial oxygen. A mysterious illness is slowly killing the worlds’ population and the only hope for a cure comes in the form of a message from the future. “It’s been Amazing!” said Arcadia’s founding partner Alex Burke. “In the US the film was released in October and it went straight to Number 3 on iTunes and across digital platforms! And this is when cinemas had been closed because of COVID and you’re premiering films online, so to be online and Number 3 in the US Charts was pretty mind blowing and completely unexpected!”

New look for John Cook Real Estate as agency celebrates 25 years — JONATHAN ROE —

John Cook Real Estate have marked their 25-year milestone in business with and new look logo and branding. Founded in 1995 by John Cook, the agency is proudly local, independent and family owned. “It has always been a family thing with us,” said Anthony Cook, who owns the business today along with his wife Jane. “Dad started it in a little shop in Sale Street, he was actually the assistant clerk at the Court house before then, but he’d had enough of that and decided to get into real estate. And it is a real family business, where every member of our family has worked here at some point — so whether it’s my brother, my sister, Mum even she had a stint here when we were short on people on the front desk. Now Jane does the property management, I look after the sales and my sister does all our office management and it’s all worked really well.” Anthony, who is a builder by trade, joined his father in the business in 1998. Leaving to spend a few years in the Sydney real estate game, Anthony returned to the agency, he and Jane becoming partners in 2009 and buying the business outright when John Cook retired in 2015. “It’s just gone from strength to strength,” said Anthony. “Orange is just such a good town, we are very blessed to be here I reckon. I just love it! It has got everything and that is why people are coming here.” 14 MARCH 4 — 10, 2021

After 25 years, Anthony said it was a little hard to let go of the logo that had been the iconic look of the agency for such a long time, but it was time. “I liked the old logo. It had been with us since the start, but I suppose we wanted to get something that was fresh and freshen everything up,” said Anthony. With a nod to the original colour palette, the new logo is about symbolising their growth as a business into the future. “We wanted something that showed who we are: we are a country town, we are the ‘Colour City,’ and we are growing as a business — that’s what the tree is all about,” said Anthony. It’s no secret the real estate market in Orange is booming at the moment and Anthony is looking to grow the team at John Cook Real Estate. Given Orange’s diverse economic base and enviable country lifestyle, he believes there’s plenty of growth in the city’s future. “I can’t see Orange going backwards anytime soon. We had a pandemic and that didn’t stop it!” he said. “It is just such a strong community; you have health sector and tourism — people love coming here! More and more people over the other side of the mountains are starting to notice these country areas and Orange looks pretty good! Cadia’s garden gift blossoms at domestic violence centre — MELISE DAVIS — Newcrest’s Cadia Valley Operations has continued its support of Housing Plus’ Domestic Violence Crisis Centre conducting a Garden Blitz to create a community garden space within the facility. A team of thirty Cadia employees volunteered to overhaul a section of the Centre, creating a tranquil garden space featuring an Indigenous yarning circle, and a raised vegetable garden for the residents to enjoy. Cadia engaged with the Orange Aboriginal Land Council to design the Indigenous garden and yarning circle. The yarning circle is incorporated into the body of a platypus, with three paths representing the three rivers which forms Wiradjuri Country, the land in which the garden is built on. Cadia's General Manager, Aaron Brannigan said the garden would prove to be a valuable asset for clients at The Orchard. “We are really proud to continue our ongoing support of The Orchard, and we hope the garden our workforce has created, will provide a positive and peaceful space for clients at the facility.” “Our team are extremely passionate about helping the community and collectively spent over 166 hours on bringing this project to life,” said Aaron. Housing Plus’ Head of Community Services, Penny Dordoy added, “The Cadia team have developed a garden that brings The Orchard to life and will delight our clients.” “We are so thrilled to be able to welcome clients and show them the garden that they can use, learn from, play in and enjoy. We can’t thank all the volunteers and organisers from Cadia enough for their time, effort and passion for the project.” A planting day is planned for later this year when the Cadia team will return to plant additional trees and shrubs, along with Indigenous plants in the head and tail of the platypus. Newcrest’s latest project is one of the many ways it has shown support for the new domestic violence crisis centre to ensure the facility would be ready for the community in 2021. In 2017, Cadia provided a $75,000 donation towards the fundraising efforts for The Orchard, and last year, when Housing Plus had to cancel the White Tie Ball due to COVID-19 restrictions, Newcrest provided a further $75,000 to ensure the crisis centre could be completed and open.

Some of the major telecommunications providers including Telstra, Optus, NBN, Aussie Broadband and Wi-Sky, will feature at the forum that is open to local businesses and community members from across the region.

The major service providers will give updates and information surrounding connectivity and coverage in regional areas so attendees can walk away with a better understanding of their needs and mostly importantly, the options available in the Central West. RDA Central West CEO, Sam Harma said the forum is an outstanding opportunity for local businesses and members of the community to hear directly from industry leaders.

ACKNOWLEDGING OUR SES It was an honour to pay tribute in the Parliament last week to the men and women who serve in our State Emergency Services. Here is an extract from my speech: The New South Wales SES never takes a break. It’s always there on the ground, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, keeping our community safe. On 30 January this year I attended a special awards ceremony in Orange to recognise the invaluable contribution and long service of many SES units and volunteers from across the region. Ceremonies were also held in Mudgee and Bathurst. On behalf of the communities of Calare, I would like to acknowledge those who were honoured at those recent ceremonies….From the Canobolas cluster, there was Mareea Agustin, Jeanette Bowd, Grant Hill, James Maclean, William Rollo, Alfred Dukes, Letitia Neville, Robert Stevens, Gregory Agustin, Anne-Marie Stevens, Peter Barnes, Henry Hoswell, Robert O’Neill, John Agustin, Desmond Cassidy, Dallas Pearce and Douglas Watson. Today this Chamber recognises the selflessness and the dedication to community to ensure that we are safe and can get through these emergencies. We say congratulations to all of those award recipients and to all members of the SES for all of the wonderful work that they do

in our communities in keeping our communities safe all year round. It’s not just the emergencies when they’re out on calls; it’s training all year round, supporting community events and supporting our communities. They are part of the very fabric of our country communities. We thank the SES for everything that they have done for us.

I recently met with Terry Cornick in the NSW Parliament, the founder of the men’s mental health charity ‘Mr Perfect’. Terry’s own personal challenges are what led him to the development of this grass roots initiative, which aims to assist in preventing mental health issues before they develop into a crisis.

They offer a select range of text based psychological and counselling support services to individuals and those in the corporate, rural and remote settings and my colleague Roy Bulter, the Member for Barwon, has received positive feedback from people who have used this

Team 9K9 Big Dog’s Mini Trek passed through the area over the weekend of 26-28th February. The Trek started approximately 16 years ago as a test Bash before the “Big Trek”. Now running annually, it has turned into a fundraiser for the Royal Flying Doctor. All participates donate $500 to the cause. This year

there were 90 participates in 36 cars. They will travel approximately 1000 through the area, primarily on dirt roads, starting at Goulburn travelling through Oberon, Rockley, Neville, Lyndhurst, Millthorpe, Orange, Molong, Bumberry, Alectown, Parkes, Cookamidgera, Cudal, Cargo, Lister, Byng, Rock Forest, Sofala, Dark Corner,

THE ‘DAD & DAVE’ EXHIBITION

The artwork of Orange Art Society president David Mason and his late father Tony Mason will be on display this month in a very special Featured Artist exhibition. Tony Mason started painting late in life as a hobby. He found oil painting was his preferred medium, but as his experience broadened, he moved into watercolours. His favourite subjects were seascapes and landscapes. As time went on, he became a professional artist and joined a group called Six on the Turps with Greg Turner, Annemarie Ingham, Elaine Mortimer, Eris Fleming and Loretta Blake. Together this group held exhibitions locally as well as interstate. “Dad liked to pass on his knowledge and would regularly give people demonstrations and help at the local art group” said son, David Mason. “If you were willing to listen, he would be more than happy to help.” Tony also tutored at Mitchell College and various other places in New South Wales. He was President of the Orange Art Society for several years and tried to get a better acceptance for art in the local area. “He often asked me to have a go at painting but unfortunately, I did not do this until after his death,” said David.

“I enjoy passing on knowledge to other artists and I do this by giving lessons (like father like son). I enjoy my art as it is way of relaxing and I am forever learning more about this craft. One of my biggest joys is passing this on to my students.” said David. “I am intrigued by the way light falls on an object and I am striving to achieve that effect in my paintings. I like to create something that people can get involved in and I really like it when people feel the same thing as me.” David has accrued accolades for his work including a first prize in a portrait contest, a first for an animal portrait, a first for a landscape and several highly commended awards. The Dad & Dave Exhibition will open on Monday, 8 March 2021 at the Orange Art Society Gallery in Sale Street (entry located at the rear of the Woolworth’s carpark near Harris Farm). Everyone is welcome and are encouraged to come along on Saturday 20 March at 2pm for a ‘Meet & Greet’ with David.

“I had an interest in art from a young age, but I only did cartoons until later in life when I did eventually give painting a go. Part of my motivation was to fulfil a wish my dad had for me to start painting.”

If the doors are open and the flag is out, the Gallery is open. Everyone is welcome to come in and browse, have a chat to members and to purchase any works that catch your attention.

David started painting with oil paints but soon realised that he needed more brush mileage to improve so, he changed to acrylic. This enabled David to do more paintings in the same amount of time. He soon realised that his favourite subjects were portraits of animals and people, but David is happy with any subject.

THUMBS UP To all the good Staff at Orange Base Hospital, who were all so efficient and friendly to me, during my recent treatment. Also, a special mention to Dr Tim Nicholson, he was fantastic! THUMBS DOWN to Centrelink and the Australian Government, giving people who haven’t worked a day in their lives an increase in their dole payments and us taxpayers who work full time have to pay for their dole payments. Big message Centrelink start cutting the dole payments for people who don’t deserve them. Full time workers who work shouldn’t have to pay for people who are on the dole. EDITOR: This is a sentiment shared by many, but we need to be careful not to lump everyone into the same group. THUMBS DOWN to the drivers who, after taking off from the Greengate lights, accelerate at speeds out onto Molong and Forbes Roads. I feel the Police or mobile speed cameras (without warning signs) need to patrol these 2 roads on a more regular basis, as I am sure they will catch a lot of speeding drivers.

THUMBS UP and thank you to Eddie our neighbour for mowing the tall grass. People haven’t bothered to keep it clean and tidy. Nobody has been living in the house for 6 months and left the mess behind. Shame. THUMBS UP to our boxing coach Glen Norton for volunteering his time to train us at United BJJ & Boxing. Your classes are awesome. HUGE THUMBS UP to Orange Credit Union and especially Molly and Jake. OCU saved me from being scammed!! On the internet I was trying to book a flight, I felt uneasy after a few incidents with the operator so decided to cancel call and ring the OCU. Story told and Molly spoke to a staff member who discovered that scammer had tried to get two payments from my account. OCU had already blocked each one as the amount was going to a Bank in India!! End result—I was saved, Jake organised my iPad for me and Molly was excellent. Young people who have been really well trained and are only too happy to help. No more internet purchases for me!!
