Next, I need to tell you that we’re dropping a couple of our competitions next week and replacing them with others. Last week in our Newswatch newspaper we introduced what we call the Council Game. It’s an idea we have to make the run up to the Council election in September more interesting. Right now, it’s unknown how readers will respond to the Game but we’re hopeful it will prove to be ‘must read’ each week. I’d encourage everyone to get a copy of the current Newswatch issue and see what we’re doing. Talks from an Aussie Abroad — MELISE COLEMAN —

Kaedla Hutchings first travelled overseas in 2017, at 22 years of age, flying over 15,000 kms across the ditch, she left her life in Australia to be with her partner of (now five years.)

“I met my partner in Australia, I had just finished my degree and I had never travelled anywhere before, so I thought… why not travel back to Ireland with him! It was a fun year, but I didn’t wear any of the summer clothes I packed,” Kaedla laughed.

After a brief visit back to Australia in 2018, Kaedla and her partner Kevin, decided to head back to Ireland.

Kaedla mentioned her favourite experience has been travelling through the scenic drive of the Iveragh Peninsula, evidently known as the ‘Ring of Kerry’, noting she would never get sick of the sight of the landscape and the ‘Gap of Dunloe’ (a narrow mountain pass separating several mountain ranges.)

“There is a strong culture here and there is always mention of ‘ancient Ireland’ which dates back 6000+ years. The Irish language is everywhere, on road signs and bus stops the Irish name for it will appear before the English name and there are lots of ancient sites like the ‘Hill of Tara’ - an ancient ceremonial and burial site.

“I often ask myself the question, why did I stay in a country rampant with the virus that’s caused a global pandemic while my own country is flourishing in comparison to the rest of the world... Love,” Kaedla said. “…Or maybe it was the weather, or pints or the Irish banter or the Dublin City atmosphere,” she laughed. Pre COVID, Kaedla’s plan was to get a job, soak up the sun in the summer months, and head to a festival in Budapest. “In reality, two weeks after I got here the whole country was in severe lockdown, and I was unemployed for the longest length of time since I was 15 years old, looking on with envy at the country I had just left. I did enjoy the time to read and reset and re-focus though. I definitely found the silver linings. “COVID here, is like a normal feature

Irish pubs are great craic, and I cannot wait until I can sit and enjoy a pint while there’s a bit of Irish trad playing in the background.”

SOMETHING NEW! A reminder that our Community Project for this year is “Growing Hearts for Orange”. Readers may recall that earlier I said we wanted to extend the sentiment from supporting retail business owners to include the broader community as well. I mentioned keeping our City beautiful and making sure visitors and shoppers never go away without having had a great and friendly experience. Time will tell how well we are able to do this, but I can tell you now about one new thing we’ll be doing to help this along from next week.

Hearts for Orange will sponsor a new 90 minute radio show on Community Radio Station FM 107.5. It will simply be called the Hearts for Orange Show. The show will run from 10.30am to noon each Thursday and will include lots of fun and information, all designed to help us grow in our love and support for all things Orange. There’ll be interviews, tips about great local businesses and great products to try, news about happenings, plenty of great music and more. In typical Hearts for Orange fashion, we’ll also give listeners the chance to win $50 each week to spend at Ashcroft’s Supa IGA, we’ll do this with a very simple game we’ll call Radio Bingo. Another thing we’ll mention on the show is what we will call Hearts for

Orange “Work Alert”. This is where we’ll invite members of the public to keep an eye out for repairs or maintenance that need doing around our City by our Council, and report these to us to pass on to Council. It could be a tree limb that’s fallen, a dangerous footpath, an act of vandalism or something else. Again, we’ll offer a $50 prize each week to one lucky person who reports something that needs attention. The idea is to encourage locals to spot and report things that the Council may not otherwise hear about in a timely manner. Details for both Radio Bingo and Work Alert will now appear on our Competition page from next week as well. We’ll drop our Random Rego and Is this Your Place competitions from next week to make way for these. I say again, Hearts for Orange is a brilliant initiative for these times. BUT, we can’t do it alone. We need everyone to get on board. We, who should support an initiative like this, need to forget pride and egos and the like and come together for the common good. My whole organisation (Orange City Life, OCL Newswatch, Hearts for Orange) is doing our bit, let’s encourage others, whoever they might be, to get with the program too. Imagine what we could achieve if they did?

Save the date. Winter 2022 is set to come alive in Orange with massive weekend of live music set for the June Long Weekend.

Planning has already begun on the new Orange Winter Jazz Festival, which will feature some 50 gigs over the three-day holiday weekend.

Luke approached Council with the idea last year and with the assistance of JAM Orange, Council agreed to back it, providing $50,000 over three years.

“The idea is to bring out some of Australia’s best Jazz Musicians to Orange,” said festival coordinator Luke Wilkinson, who came up with the idea for the soon-to-be annual event.

A former Electrolux employee with a background in factory operation and logistics, Luke also has experience in coordinating successful community projects.

“A friend and I decided we should have a music festival in Orange. I am one of the people in town who is prepared to go to Sydney for a concert and what a hassle that is right? So if we could have our own festival here, what a change it would be! Orange is now big enough, it is

“So our commitment to Council is to try and have around 50 concerts — and obviously we would like to grow on that — 50 concerts for the festival starting on a Friday night and then working our way through to about 7pm Sunday and running all day Saturday and all day Sunday.” The plan is also to include an educational element with Masterclasses and school involvement. “We are now active and we have a committee and the plan is to start the festival next year, because it is in Winter and it will all be indoor venues we can’t run it with social distancing “In the next month or two we are going to look at possible venues in town. We also need a more solid budget, so we are looking for sponsors as well.”

Luke said there will also be room for central west musicians of all genres to join in the festival line-up. “We will be seeking expressions of interest. JAM Orange — Paul Kelly and Mark Welch —will take responsibility for that. An in the case of the Jazz, we are working with the Sydney Improvised Music Association, they promote live Jazz in Sydney and they do about 130 concerts a year in Sydney so they’re helping us. “We could always do with some more people; so anyone who want’s to come and help us, that’d be great.” Musicians interested in being part of the new festival can contact JAM Orange jamorange2800@gmail.com. Founded last year, Orange Open Air is a not-for-profit organisation that aims to promote and celebrate cinema and film making in Orange. “The idea behind it is to put on open-air cinema events and really celebrate the beautiful landscape around Orange, to create an experience for audiences where we kind of pair the film with a specific location,” said film producer and distributor Alex Burke, who relocated to Orange in 2020 with her film production company This is Arcardia. “We launched Orange Open Air last year with a Halloween special screening Hocus Pocus in the Orange AG Pavilion and that was a big success; we sold out in a couple of days. “Coming up to this February we thought it would be a really nice thing for the community — now that we can be outdoors in larger groups together in a COVID-Safe way — to have a “Summer lovin’ series” celebrating the great Australian romantic

comedies of the mid-90s. Muriel’s Wedding was chosen to kick off the three-event series this Saturday, which will be followed by Pricilla: Queen of the Desert (date to be confirmed). “We really encourage people getting the gang together, bringing a picnic and enjoying the film under the stars,” said Alex. “For Muriel’s Wedding in Orange Botanic Gardens… on arrival you will be transported into either Porpoise Spit or Hibiscus Island and there’ll be a dress up competition so don your best wedding dress, banana bra or ABBA costume! It will be a perfect way to spend a summer night in February.

“They’ll cover all aspects of film from scriptwriting to production to directing and even then what it takes to put a film out in cinemas. So that’s quite exciting! We’ll have some more information on that very soon.” Alex has spent the past 14 years in the film industry, working with Danish director Lars Von Trier in Copenhagen and distributing Australian films for international audiences. She now runs the distribution arm of This is Arcadia which is preparing for a number of big releases in 2021. “I think it is quite an exciting time to be making films and there is a really great opportunity to do things out here,” she said.

Following the February screenings, Orange Open Air will be hosting a series of workshops for aspiring filmmakers.

“We’ve moved into a warehouse on Endsleigh Ave which we are in the process of converting into a film studio and photo studio, we will be having writers rooms there…

“In March, we will be bringing some well-known filmmakers to come out and run workshops,” said Alex.

“We’ve got three films coming up for theatrical release in the next six months and it is quite exciting for us as a company!”

AUSTRALIA DAY IN THE CENTRAL WEST! Australia Day 2021 was a great occasion for Australians to come together and celebrate our wonderful country and how lucky we are to live in it. 2020 was a devastating year, with drought, bushfires, floods and COVID-19. What got us through all of those trials and ordeals was our local communities and the Australians who in all sorts of ways put the care and safety of others above themselves. It’s that spirit of service above self that has always sustained our nation and goes to the very heart of what it is to be an Australian. It was great to kick-off Australia Day celebrations with Oberon’s Welcome Function at O’Connell the evening before, followed by a busy Australia Day! I started the day at Orange’s official event and Citizenship Ceremony in the morning, followed by Bathurst Regional Council’s Australia Day Awards ceremony. I then headed west to continue Australia Day ceremonies in Manildra and then Yeoval, where I helped welcome some of our region’s newest citizens. I’d like to thank and congratulate everyone in our Central West community who was nominated for, or received, an Australia Day award, including Orange Citizen of the Year, Bev Rankin for her tireless support and care provided to those in need, and to Young Citizen of the Year, Jordyn Wright, who was recognised for her volunteer work and community spirit. We thank you all for your contribution to making our region and our country the best place in the world to call home.

SCHOOL IS BACK! Good luck to all our Orange region school students who have returned to the classroom for 2021. There are probably quite a few parents happy to see school going back after the summer break. I’d also like to acknowledge the vitally important work of our teachers. COVID-19 VACCINE ROLLOUT UPDATE

Vaccination of Australians against COVID 19 will start late this month in an orderly rollout to priority groups which is safe, effective and explained properly to Australians. Those people in the first phase of the rollout will be quarantine and border workers; frontline health care workers; and aged care and disability care staff. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has provisionally

approved the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for use in Australia, while the AstraZeneca international dose is on track for an early March roll out subject to TGA approval. A major public information campaign to encourage Australians to get a COVID-19 vaccine is now underway, and will keep Australians fully informed and up to date about the safety and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines as they become available, including when, how and where to get the jab.

It’s time to talk about the future of energy production in Australia. It’s not an easy topic. But it’s an important issue and one that this nation needs to address. The Australian Government’s priority continues to be to strengthen our economy and to create jobs, and we need to do this while also tackling the topic of emissions and a sustainable future for our children. I think we can do both. As the PM, Scott Morrison, said in his Press Club address on Monday, the Coalition’s policy is to tackle climate change with technology, not taxes. He told staff at the hospital he intended sleeping in his car as he couldn’t afford accommodation, and it was the middle of winter, so they contacted us straight away,” she said.

Since moving to Orange Helen has wasted no time cementing herself as a vital member of our community. It was over 30 years ago that she first fell in love with Orange, after visiting for work for department store, Myer/Grace Bros.

“Since then, I travelled to Orange regularly over the years for weekends away and in 2012 I was lucky enough to secure a short-term contract to work here, this really confirmed it as a great place to live,” Helen said.

“When I look back at my decision to resign from my job, sell the house and come to Orange to my life now which I am loving, it really was an audacious move as there was always the risk that I wouldn’t be happy,” she said. But if her involvement in the community is any indication, Helen is truly living her best life.

“I was looking to retire from the hustle and bustle of Sydney life – the traffic was continually getting worse and, in my mind, I had always had this idea of living in the country with a cat, a dog and a garden!”

It was a Sydney connection which had led to Helen offering her services in the beginning.

After settling into her new home, Helen contacted Executive Officer of Ronald McDonald House Charities, Rebecca Walsh, to enquire about becoming a volunteer at the house.

For the last twelve months Helen has been volunteering her services for administrative duties at RMHC Orange and has evidently become a valuable member of the volunteer team.

“We had a mutual friend in Sydney who urged me to make contact with Rebecca – and of course I am so glad I did,” she said.

“One of the lovely things about volunteering at Ronald McDonald House in Orange is that there are so many options for volunteers and the time you contribute can be tailored to your skillset or whatever you would like to do. It’s also a good way for people who are new to Orange to meet likeminded people.” Helen mentioned a standout experience recently which has helped her appreciate how important

Cooking up a solution for men’s mental — JONATHAN ROE —

Local member Phil Donato MP is hoping to get local men to open up and talk about their mental health at a serious of monthly barbecues he is hosting in conjunction with men’s health charity Mr Perfect. “Men’s health is often overlooked, and blokes generally aren’t forthcoming or open about their mental health,” said Phil.

Mental health is a big issue I’ve been pursuing in parliament and this is one small step that I can take as a local member

Well done to the Ploughmans Wetlands Care Group and Orange City Council on completion of the boardwalk across the dam making all-weather access possible. This is fantastic for the many people in our community who walk, ride, run and visit the wetlands and surrounding area.

It was a beautiful morning at Cook Park for the Australia Day citizenship ceremony and local community awards. Well done to all the finalists and winners in all categories. You all make an important and valuable contribution to the Orange community.

On Wednesday January 27, Orange Anglican Grammar School (OAGS) welcomed their 2021 Kindergarten kiddos to their first year of ‘big school’. Although many students had previously attended ‘Transition’ (Pre-Kindergarten) Program at OAGS last year, prior to making the step to their first official year of school, there were still some first day jitterswhich can only be expected. Although this year’s Kindergartnener’s will know no different, this year will look slightly different to previous Kindergarten years at the school as the Early Learning team embark on a new project. This year Kindergarten classes will be joining together in a flexible learning space with a coteaching model in place. Kindergarten teachers Mrs Michelle Pearson, Mrs Erin Purvis and Early Learning Coordinator Mrs Sally Drury will be able to offer a range of learning activities and differentiate the learning experience to suit the needs and knowledge of each student. Orange Anglican Grammar Headmaster Rev Stringer said, “Flexible learning spaces provide opportunities for teachers to engage in the kind of planning and teacher collaboration that is most effective in improving student learning. I’m confident that our Kindergarten teaching team will be coTeaching, pushing themselves as professionals, and making their practice transparent and public in order to become increasingly skilled, reflective and thoughtful.”

coins which were put into the pudding in those days. Dee recalled her mother boiling up the threepences and sixpences beforehand and Frank had a great uncle who used to invite the family over to light up his pudding a week before Xmas, and have the excitement of finding the coins.

The table is elegantly laid with a white cloth and silver cutlery and the little ones are under the close supervision of a maid. It is 1740 and they are learning table manners. Meals were a social ritual, especially for the wealthier classes. When Mrs Beeton wrote her book on Household Management in 1861, table manners were considered an essential part of one’s education. This was a far cry from The Middle Ages when there was little ceremony attached to the consuming of food. The one essential thing was that you didn’t get too greasy when tearing meat apart with your teeth and fingers. This month the Oral History group members examined their collective memories and looked at the way food and its consumption has changed in their lifetimes. The 1940s, 50s and 60s were very different, both socially and economically from today. Up until the early 1950s there was no television, little refrigeration and not everyone had telephones. Life was much more ordered with a definite division of labour in most households. Meal times were generally at the same time each day, table manners strictly observed, and food changed little from day to day. “We always had a clean tablecloth and said ‘grace’ before meals,” said Leslye. “Butter was on a little plate and we were always warned not to take too much as ‘that is all there is. "It was very hot in Moree where I grew up, but Mum used to cook the most amazing things on the fuel stove.” Russel has rather unfortunate memories of fuel stoves: “I had a great aunt Millie who loved to invite the family for Sunday lunch. In her kitchen was a huge table, taking up most of the room, and placed right next to the equally enormous fuel stove. There were

ten at the table and we were served a roasting hot meal in the middle of summer with the thermometer at 110! "My Uncle Tom didn’t drink, but he took pity on me and put four bottles of beer on the table, tops off, at room temperature! It took me a week to recover.”

Lyn lived in Yeoval and her father had an extensive vegetable garden. “If it wasn’t in the garden, we didn’t eat it,” she told us. This was echoed by most people in the group. Everyone seemed to grow their own, even in Sydney where Bronwyn lived on the outskirts of the city. “We had a veggie patch, chooks and a cow from which we had milk cream and butter. We were very self-sufficient, never had ‘takeaways’ and always took our lunch to school.” “I was a Depression kid, one of four boys living in Sydney,” Stuart told us. “We had an extensive vegetable garden with a beautiful peach tree. One of my best memories was of climbing that tree, picking a ripe peach and sitting high in the branches to eat it. Nothing tasted so good! We had rows of potatoes, beans and peas and always had a baked dinner on Sundays. “There was a shop a few hundred yards away and I was given the job of taking the billy can after we’d eaten, going to the shop for several

scoops of ice cream and come running back with it before it melted.” Monica grew up on an isolated property near Eugowra. “My background was French/Italian so the food we ate was slightly different from the usual meals and spaghetti was an important part of our diet,” she said.

“We had a huge vegetable garden and an orchard, and like most people, we ate what we grew.” (Most of our group members could only remember eating spaghetti out of a tin, without the benefit of the delicious sauces that Monica was used to.) “There were eight children in the family, but we didn’t eat with the adults and always went to bed early. We mostly ate mutton and the occasional chook, although we had a change when my oldest brother decided he wanted to grow peanuts. Unfortunately, the pig got into it and ate the peanuts, Dad shot the pig, and we all had a lovely lot of bacon. "But it was at Christmas time that Mum would really excel. “Our Xmas pudding would be made and hung in the back room about six weeks before,” said Tom. Everyone was enthusiastic about the silver

Tom probably swallowed one of the coins his mother had carefully put into his slice of pudding because he never did remember finding it. Barbara, who grew up in Cargo and was the eldest of ten children, she remembers a wonderful childhood filled with big gatherings of aunties and uncles and cousins. “There were 74 of us at the Xmas gathering of 1974. Mum and her sisters were wonderful cooks and because they all thought our fuel stove was the best, they came to our place to cook their cakes and puddings. I can remember Mum taking the last cake out at 11pm.” Owen probably had the best Xmas pudding story to tell. “My wife, Isabel, also had two sisters and the three of them prided themselves on their cooking. They were also very competitive about Xmas and took turns to entertain the family. “This particular time it was our turn. The first course was a success and my wife and I went to the kitchen to prepare Aunt Mary’s pudding. My job was to pour over the brandy and set it alight. I grabbed the brandy bottle, poured liberally, and then to my horror, discovered vegetable oil had been put into the bottle! Panic! “I saved the day by running hot water over it, poured brandy from the right bottle, set it alight and triumphantly carried it into the dining room to great applause.” The oral history group enjoyed the discussion on food so much that it was decided to continue at the next meeting. “We haven’t even talked about ordinary puddings yet!” was the cry. So join us next month for some mouth-watering memories of the food we loved, or hated, most.

Kay Gorringe and Kel Gleeson The Orange Art Society’s Featured Artists for February 2021 are Kay Gorringe and Kel Gleeson.

Kay embarked on her artistic career more than 20 years ago, taking a watercolour class with Wanda Driscoll.

“I was still working at the time, and was not always able to attend classes.” said Kay, who has also enjoyed attending other classes over the years including oil painting classes, workshops with Tony Mason, Reg Campbell, Barry and Lucy McCann, Herman Pekel, Sandra Wenban and other tutors.

In the 50s, Kel completed a commercial art course and worked in the advertising department at Myer. In 1970, he started a screen-printing business where, in the early days, all the art and stencils were done by hand, until they got a process camera and computer.

“I thought Greg was a great artist and a great teacher, one thing about Greg he really knew his colours. Ted Lewis, like Greg, was also a great teacher,” he said. “Jan and I went to Russia, Europe, England and Ireland in 1993 and 2007. In 2007 we went to the Hermitage to see the wonderful art there, then back to Paris, our favourite city, to visit the Louvre again to see all the great masters.”

Kel always enjoys other artists artwork and believes there are a lot of talented artists in Orange. Kay & Kel’s exhibition will open on Monday, 8 February 2021 and will run at the Orange Art Society Gallery in Sale Street (entry located at the rear of the Woolworth’s carpark near Harris Farm). Come along and check out the exhibition. If the doors are open and the flag is out, the Gallery is open. At 7.45pm on the night of February 10 2018, the Rural Fire Service was alerted to a fire that had started halfway up the west slope of Mount Canobolas, just off the road. Little did anyone know that blaze would grow and stay alight on the mountain for over four days. The NSW Rural Fire Service posted an update on their Facebook page on February 15, stating the fire was under control with thanks to the efforts of more than 20 RFS ground crews, close to a dozen firefighting aircraft and assistance from State Forest crews and NSW Parks and Wildlife Services. It had burnt 1671 hectares of bushland and thanks to the efforts of our Firefighters, no homes had been lost.

— PHOTOS BY EDITHMAY GOWING — Twenty years ago, on Australia day a team from the Orange City Bowling Club broke the Guinness World record for the longest game of Lawn Bowls. They took the record from a team in Surrey, England by bowling for 31 hrs and 7 mins. In the process the team raised $35,000 for the Kids Leukemia Cancer Foundation. The current world record is held by a team in New Zealand as their game took a whopping 177 hours. The bowls team hold reunions of the event on important occasions. This year one member was unable to travel from Queensland, another member surprised the team by coming from Victoria and brought his son who was the substitute for the day. Any funds raised from the day will also go the Kids Leukemia Cancer Foundation. It’s said that back in the day (and also at the reunion) they played for a $1 Keno ticket.
