The weather continues to be glorious and that encourages people to get outdoors, even if it’s just for a walk in the park. My wife and I have been doing a fair bit of that lately and last week we had family join us as we strolled around Cook Park. Our visitors (from Dubbo) marvelled at Cook Park and were taken back by how beautiful it looks at the present time. They also commented several times on the character of Orange over Dubbo, given our myriad of trees. Sometimes we tend to take for granted what we have don’t we?

Hive creating a buzz in McNamara Lane — JONATHAN ROE —

Step inside Prue and Andrew Swain’s co-working space on McNamara Lane and you’ll find Hive is aptly named.

s soon as you step inside, there is a distinct ‘buzz’ about the place. In the large open foyer area there are people discussing business in informal meeting spaces, others chat over cups of tea in the spacious communal kitchen, while through an open doorway a dozen people are busy at laptops in the ‘hotdesking’ room.

“We bought this place in July last year and then we’ve just gutted it,” says Prue, talking through the extensive renovations she and electrician husband Andrew worked to turn the old St Vincent de Paul retail shop into a modern professional office space. “My husband is really clever and that helps, he did all the work ,I did all the design and so he and I project managed it together. “We had to literally gut it and start again, it was a massive push for all tradesmen to get it done so everyone can move in. It took us until March and then we opened the week before COVID hit.” While a global pandemic is far from the ideal time to open an occasional co-working office space, the nature of the Hive means it is highly adaptable to suit many different needs. The upstairs of the building is comprised of one large office along with 10 smaller offices, all of which are leased on a permanent basis.

“We have a waiting list a mile long for the upstairs office space,” says Prue, who also has found steady demand for the downstair hot desks, which can be hired by the day, as well as conference rooms and meeting rooms which are hired by the hour.

“And I think it is necessary, actually because there is a huge influx of people from Sydney and they are used to having this type of professional space. So I think it is time that Orange actually steps up. If we are going to compete with other regional towns, I think it is so important that we do have spaces like this.”

“The idea of this is that small businesses can still look good and look professional by being in here. So, the concept was to not just have a big open place, but also permanent private offices.” The businesses that occupy those offices are extremely varied. There are grain traders, a mortgage broker, graphic designer, virtual assistant and film producers. And that mix is all part of Prue’s design. “I heard one of the tenants say, what they love about being here is that is not for just one person. You go to a co-working space in Sydney and it is for the designers, or there is one for the for the digital people — it is all the same type of people all in the same space. But for this to work I was careful to select a mix of people, so anyone can walk in here or not feel that it is not for them,” she says. The idea for Hive was sparked by a conversation with a friend of Prue’s who was having trouble finding suitable professional space here in Orange. “He said he couldn’t find anywhere nice and I thought how good would it be to have somewhere

The rates Prue charges her tenants is surprisingly reasonable and she does not sign people up to longterm leases. “If you create a beautiful space and you enjoy where you work, then why would they want to leave?” says Prue, who also sees the Hive as a launching pad for small businesses that couldn’t otherwise afford their own quality office space. “People have signed up for mostly six months. It is what I envisage for this: for businesses to outgrow the space, they move on and then we get someone else. So that’s where ‘Hive 2 might come in— bigger offices.” Not that Prue is jumping to take on another project so soon after completing such a massive renovation. “But I definitely think we need a Hive 2… maybe even in Bathurst — I’ve had Forbes Condo, and Narromine contact… But if somebody else wants to do a Hive 2. I am happy to not go through the headache!”

WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH…. There’s no doubt about it, retail shops are doing it tough. Over 20 local home improvement type businesses are giving you the chance to talk about your home improvement ideas and then do something about them. Apart from specials, sale items and other special deals and incentives, Hearts for Orange has also thrown in a $2000 Gift voucher to one lucky shopper at one of the participating businesses. The winner will get to choose which participating business they’d like to spend the $2000 at. You’ll find more information about the Spectacular in this issue and I’d encourage you to check out what’s happening and then visit any of the businesses involved that you feel may be able to help you. We all know the saying “when the going gets tough, the tough get going”, it appears however that our local Councillors only apply that in certain cases and for the most part, have shown no interest in helping our local retailers. Just over recent weeks, our Councillors have approved $100,000 to go to Orange 360 after they spoke at Council of how tough the local hosptality was doing it, we have also heard Council is talking about providing $50,000 for Christmas decorations and just last week, they voted to sponsor a New Year Laser event for $30,000. During the last few months Hearts for Orange has asked Council for similar help to sponsor and run events like this week’s Home Improvement Spectacular and other initiatives designed to bring more people to Orange to shop and

do business more often. Council and our Councillors to date, have shown no enthusiasm whatsoever for helping in any tangible manner. All this while my company Regional Life Group, has committed almost $100,000 to underwrite what others like our Council should be doing. To rub insult into injury, after Councillors voted to give the “struggling” hospitality sector $100,000 via Orange 360, we have read that tourism in Orange is booming with at least one winery recently claiming business is up sixfold! At last week’s Council meeting Councillor Duffy was heard to comment, he wondered why Council gave Orange 360 the $100,000 when the City has been full every weekend. I can assure you that very few retailers will claim business is booming at this present time, yet our Councillors still refuse to do anything tangible to help them. It really is appalling in my view and shows just how out of touch they are with reality and what retail business operators are dealing with. They’ll argue for a few people who complain that their green wheelie bin wasn’t emptied because the wet grass was too heavy, and they’ll all have a say on what water restrictions should apply, but when it comes to something really important like the viability of the business sector that employs more people than anyone else in Orange, they appear not interested. Thankfully, the public has more sense and compassion and this week we can show our Councillors how the ‘tough’ do get going. Sadly, the “tough” in Orange are not found among our Councillors. The real “tough” are the general public who know, value and appreciate the contribution local retailers make to a community like Orange. Let’s all “get going” and go buy something this Friday or Saturday that will improve our homes. Doing this will not only genuinely help and encourage our retailers, but also give you the chance to $2000 for your trouble.

“Hello darling… hello sweetheart, come and give me a kiss.” Those were the heart-warming comments from Allan otherwise known as Joe (91) and Beryl (87) Telford as they were reunited for their 70th wedding anniversary.

Residing at Wontama Nursing home and enjoying retirement. Joe and Beryl celebrated their special day with family; including their three children Peter, Geoff and Joanne, theirfive grandchildren and their new grandchild, as they were treated to a special lunch and given a beautiful bunch of flowers to enjoy. We spoke to Beryl... How did you first meet? Well.. It’s a funny story love, I lived in Southwest rocks, my Father had a fishing trawler. Joe knew the Butchers there, every Saturday he would come down and help at the Butchers. Every Saturday I was sent there to get sausages. How did Joe propose? He come to my parent’s house where I lived and said, ‘here you are, this is for you.’ *laughs* And there was an engagement ring. I can’t remember if he asked my parents

permission or not, but I was very surprised. We married in the Church of England Church, Kempsey in 1950.

What did your weekends look like in the early days? We generally just stayed home on the farm. We weren’t people that used to like to go out partying and all of that. I think that’s why we have been together all these years; we were content in staying home and loved the peace and quiet of country living. But I was the boss. *laughs* The kids used to come home in the holidays and I’d run around and get everything ready, buy all this food and cook all of these meals.

What are you most proud of? We are lucky to have each other and after 70 years, it is an achievement I realize that, it does make me feel very old. *smiles*

Ronald McDonald House Charities in Orange received a surprise visit from Mary Winter and Jenny Williams representing the Ever Upward Apostolic Craft Group from their centre in Glenroi Avenue. The women are part of a craft group of half a dozen women who have been working all year on knitting squares to make up blankets for Ronald McDonald House Charities Orange. “While it is a big job it is something that gives us a great deal of pleasure,” said group member Jenny Williams. “It is something that has kept us all occupied during Covid,” she said. While several of the ladies have been busily knitting the squares for the blankets in a range of colours, it is Mary Winter who puts her crochet skills to work joining all the squares for the rugs together. “It is just something I love to do,” said Mary.

Executive Officer of Ronald McDonald House Charities Orange, Rebecca Walsh said the contribution of the women from the Ever Upward Apostolic Craft Group will help ease the burden of a hospital stay for children and their families.

“When every family arrives at Ronald McDonald House Charities among the services we offer is a gift bag for every child, and we love to include a rug or a quilt as it gives the child or adolescent some degree of comfort to be able to put it on their bed in hospital,” Ms Walsh said. “We are so grateful,” she said. Since Ronald McDonald House Charities opened in Orange it has provided free accommodation and services for 764 families from the central and far west for a total of 6,186 nights. Families are also provided with emergency meals, complimentary breakfasts, items for self-catering and gifts for the sick child. Ronald McDonald House is now seeking more volunteers to help meet the growing demand for accommodation services at the house. INDIGENOUS GARDEN FOR CALARE PUBLIC SCHOOL

An Indigenous garden learning space has been established at Calare Public School today, thanks to a Schoolyard Blitz hosted by Newcrest’s Cadia Valley Operations (Cadia).

Over the past two and a half years, Calare Public School has worked with local Indigenous elders, the school’s Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) and the Orange Local Aboriginal Land Council to design and develop an inclusive Indigenous garden, showcasing bush tucker and significant symbols of Wiradjuri and other Aboriginal lands.

After providing initial funds towards the project through its Community Partnership Program, Cadia decided to host a Schoolyard Blitz involving around 30 Cadia volunteers who worked with the students and teachers to bring the garden to life.

CSU MUST RELEASE SECRET AUDIT REPORT

Charles Sturt University (CSU) receives hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayer’s money every year and as a consequence, it’s accountable to the Australian taxpayer. CSU is not above scrutiny. I have called on CSU to carry out a full, independent and transparent

external audit into their finances and to provide that report to Government. A report was prepared by KPMG and CSU initially agreed to provide this report to the Government. Now the Acting Vice-Chancellor and CSU have reneged on this and are refusing to release the report. I have already met with the Acting Vice-Chancellor to discuss the KPMG audit report once, but there is little point in further meetings until CSU and the Acting Vice Chancellor honour their commitments to make the report available to the Australian Government. The fact that this commitment has been reneged on is very worrying. The CSU community is facing hundreds of job losses. This is a very serious issue for our region. What I want, and what our community rightly expects, is for CSU to deal with the concerns around its financial position in an open and transparent way. The purported ‘summary of findings’ that the University has provided is not comprehensive in nature and begs the question as to what information CSU is seeking to withhold from the public. This is all about ensuring that the community and the Government have trust and confidence that taxpayers’ money is being properly spent so that the University can grow and prosper. By raising these issues, I am doing my job as the Minister for Regional Education and I am going to keep doing it. I make no apologies for that.

I look forward to attending the official opening of The Orchard, a new crisis accommodation centre for women and children escaping domestic and family violence this week.

At the moment the only option for women and children needing refuge is to go to a neighbouring town, which is totally unworkable with children, especially when they are at school.

Anson Street is one of the busiest streets in Orange, and by improving the lighting along this stretch, we will boost foot traffic further by making people feel safe. The new LED lighting will also be more energy efficient and user friendly. The stormy weather in Orange on Friday didn’t stop me from pitching a tent in my backyard last week for Vinnies’ Community Sleepout event, which aims to raise awareness of the very real problem of homelessness in our region. There are around 400 people sleeping rough in the Central West every night. If the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that our lives can be turned upside down in an instant. Unforeseen events can change lives forever and homelessness can happen to anyone. Congratulations to the team at Bathurst Vinnies, who exceeded their fundraising target of $10,000 with the Friday event. The more than $11,000 raised will support John Therry House in Bathurst, a new Housing Plus homeless and women’s refuge, which is due to open at the end of October. Thank you to everyone who organised the event. I was pleased to make a donation and thank you to everyone who did the same.

Nine Years of Western Care Lodge LAST WEEK WESTERN CARE LODGE CELEBRATED NINE YEARS OF OPERATION IN THE ORANGE REGION. In 2011 stage 1 of Care Western Lodge at the Orange Health Services site, Bloomfield campus was completed. Western Care Lodge opened in October 2011 and hosted its first guests in November the same year. Cancer Care Western NSW is now a mid-level charity that provides employment for an office manager and support staff as well as cleaning staff. The lodge provides adult cancer patient accommodation for patients receiving crucial treatment at Orange Health Service. Over 3,000 guests have stayed at Western Care lodge since the lodge opened. In July 2013 Stage 2 was commenced which provided an additional eight ensuite rooms with an estimated cost of $1.4 million. All donations directly fund the building of Stage 2 and ongoing maintenance, an incredible effort. The team continue to fundraise and provide support to the patients who call the lodge their home away from home for up to nine weeks at a time, with one couple staying for a number of months. Patients attend from as far away as Cobar, Broken Hill, Lake Cargelligo, Lithgow, Mudgee and more. Many of those who stay leave behind family and farms to attend cancer services for life saving intervention, ensuring the lodge is an essential service. Cancer Care Western NSW is also the recipient of Regional and State Awards for excellence in Service. The Western Care Lodge board ensure the success of the organisations funding was made possible by broad local, regional and state funding from clubs and organisations, community, corporate organisations and grantsobtained through community, state, federal government and many others. The Lodge is set to have a huge 10th birthday party next year- stay tuned!

The report in the daily paper of the northern Tasmanian town of Launceston went on to say;

"The fiercest tornado ever known swept across a narrow area near the town doing damage estimated at many thousands of pounds. Many buildings, including homesteads, were unroofed and some wrecked. Big trees including some more than two feet thick were uprooted and haystacks and sheds demolished."

Sixty-four years later, the reporting was closer to home, when, on November 9th, 2005, the Central Western Daily’s front page featured the headline: TWISTED MESS LEFT BY RAGING TORNADO “A tornado bore down on a small farming community south of Orange on Tuesday night, destroying sheds and lifting the roof off one house and uprooting trees.” With warnings of global warming and forecasts of cataclysmic weather happenings ringing in our ears, the Oral History Group searched its collective memory to uncover their own experiences of tornados and other natural disasters. Preparations are underway for “Stuart Towns 2021 Man From Ironbark Festival” The Stuart Town Advancement Association Incorporated (STAA), are pleased to announce that they will be running the 2021 Man From Ironbark Festival. The ever-popular festival will be returning and will be held on Easter Saturday, (4th April). “With everything that has happened in 2020 with Covid-19, we believed it was important to announce now and start preparations for the 2021 festival” said Marcus Hanney, President of the STAA. “The STAA had always intended to take 2020 off and come back with a re vamped festival in 2021, as it turned out the 2020 break was forced upon us.” The STAA, the long-time organisers of the festival, have decided to amend the format for the day. The 2021 event will be staged within the Stuart Town Recreation Grounds and oval as well as utilising the facilities within town. “By staging the festival within the rec ground, it will allow us to put on a different looking, family friendly festival. Boehmes hall will be utilised to its full potential and we also be utilising Moxon Park as well as the Old Railway Hotel. While the main 38

street will not be closed, the School of Arts Hall will be utilised” Said Marcus. ORANGE MEN’S PROBUS CLUB At the Orange Men’s Probus Club meeting held Wednesday 7th October the Guest Speaker was Professor Kevin Parton, who spoke on air pollution in Orange particularly relating to wood fire heaters. Professor Parton has had experience in many universities. He is currently at CSU. The issue of wood fire pollution is concerning in Orange. 1661 in London during the reign of Charles11 air pollution was a massive problem caused by the burning of coal and wood for heating. Wood and coal particulates are very sharp and can cause damage in lungs. December 1952 in London there was another major problem with pollution caused by coal particulates resulting in 12,000 people dying. It took until 1956 before a policy change was made to avoid similar problems

occurring again. Professor Parton said why did it take so long for change to occur? People liked burning wood and coal; it was a sign of prosperity, wood is a favourite source of heating as it is very family friendly to gather in front of a wood fire. Armidale is the centre of wood fire pollution – so some research in Australia is now being done. There were no records of wood fire pollution in Orange until research conducted over recent years. There is a pollution monitoring station at the croquet Club in Clinton Street. DPI say 62 PM (particulates/million) is the cut off for air pollution, between 15/07/2019 to 7/09/2019 it was 26 PM. On 65% of occasions air quality is poor, very poor or hazardous. Compared with Armidale, Orange has less hazardous levels than Armidale – peak in

Health effects of wood smoke - fire smoke from one home on one night can cause more damage than smoke from 5000 cigarettes. In Sydney wood smoke causes more pollution than ours. Launceston introduced policies to reduce the number of wood heaters, for example if you sold your home wood heaters had to be replaced with other forms of heating, if you

built a new home you could not install a wood heater, wood smoke pollution reduced from 66% to 30% with very positive health results.

Can someone take some action and remove these acts. Let us ask ourselves, how would we like it if that was us? Maybe losing the right to race may be a deterrent, certainly not a $600 fine, for one incident!
