COURAGEOUS CARTER TAKES IT ALL IN HIS STRIDE — MELISE COLEMAN —

If I try hard enough, I can do as much as the other kids, just probably not for as long. 14-year-old Carter Aplin was diagnosed with congenital heart disease at just five days old. As a huge shock to the Aplin family, Carter then underwent his first open heart surgery at four weeks old. To date Carter has undergone two open heart surgeries and three regular heart surgeries, with nine operations in total (including surgeries for other conditions), with his most recent during the COVID period. “I’m getting used to hospitals,” said Carter. “And travelling to Sydney and getting check-ups.” As Carter described his condition and how it affects his active ability, he mentioned he was really good at ‘explosive fitness’, just not so much the endurance side. “I do really like sport; with my condition I just can’t run as much as the other kids. If I run around going as hard/fast as I can I’d probably only be able to do that non-stop for 10 minutes or so, then I’d put my hand up and come off and have a rest. Though with this recent operation it helped me recover a lot quicker, so now it only takes me around five minutes to recover then I’m back to normal. I play soccer, cricket and basketball. We even won the grand final this year.” Mum, Mardi laughed, “He was the only one in the family to win this year and don’t worry, that’s the first thing he said to me!” Mardi Continued, “Carter has dealt with so much and he is a kind, caring and funny young man he doesn’t let his condition stop him to achieving anything. “As he’s much bigger now, the last operation he 4

had was done through Cardiac Catheterization, and the way that science has advanced in his 14 years is remarkable. Even the last surgery he had, when he was born there was no way that could have been done through… so it would have been open heart again. I don’t think Carter will ever have a life without surgery to a certain extent, though throughout his life we have turned his condition into a positive by raising awareness and funds to demonstrate that any condition will not define him.” In doing so, the Aplin family will join the rest of the country in the annual HeartKids Two Feet & A Heartbeat charity walk on Sunday 18 October 2020 to help raise funds for kids affected by the life-long condition. “When Carter was born, we had no idea about HeartKids, but since, they’ve been fantastic,” said Mardi. “Not only for us as parents, having a support group, but I’d say 90% of them are Heart Mums that are working there, so they have all had similar experiences and understand some of the challenges that Heart families go through. It means so much to know that there are people there, ready to support you.” “I think the best thing that Carter himself has received from HeartKids was going to a HeartKids Teen Camp.” Carter agreed, “There were probably 100 kids from all over Australia and were different activities for everyone to do. It was really good because everyone there had a heart condition and I felt like I was ‘normal’ I guess, and everyone felt the same.”

“I’m proud of myself I’ve definitely come a long way. With all of the operations I’ve had I’ve been able to do a lot more than I usually would. I think I’ve had a pretty successful life; I’ve done a lot of things that challenge me, and I’ve gotten better at a lot of things, it hasn’t really stopped me from doing anything.” Mardi added “He’s due to have another open heart to fix his aortic valve in 12 months, depending on how things go, and then it will be ongoing check-ups and as time progresses, as he grows they may need to be replaced.” “The bottom line for us is there’s a lot of children that don’t make it from being born with a congenital heart disease, there’s a lot of ‘Heart Angels’ out there. Carters condition is quite a rare and complex one, we are one of the lucky ones that we can wake up every day with our son, no matter how many operations he has, he’s here with us. Everyday I’m happy that he’s well and he’s healthy and he can achieve potentially achieve things that other kids haven’t been able to or had the opportunity to do. “If there is anyone out there that needs to reach out, going through a similar experience, I’m more than happy to support them. I think that’s great for Carter at his age now, Heart kids can see him, they can see there is hope, when they are going through really dark times in their life, they know there are kids like Carter out there, and its really nice for us to see people who have been through the same journey, now in their 30s or 40s. “If we can do that, or be that for another family. That’s very special.”

Two Feet & A Heartbeat will take place virtually across NSW allowing participants to walk in their local neighbourhood. The goal is to have 4,000 people nationally walking together in support of Australian kids and families like the Aplin family. The event also pays tribute to those who have lost their lives to congenital heart disease, affectionately known as Heart Angels. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, HeartKids is embracing virtual technology to allow everyone from anywhere to participate. For the first-time participants can show their support by either walking in their local neighbourhood and participating in on-line pre and post walk activities or attending a local event in person while practising physical distancing. Two Feet & A Heartbeat features two fitness levels with participants given the option to either walk 4km in honour of the four lives lost each week to congenital or acquired heart disease, or to challenge themselves with an 8km walk in recognition of the eight babies who are born with the disease each day. All funds raised by Two Feet & A Heartbeat will help to support the expansion of HeartKids family support programs across Australia. According to HeartKids’ Holly Williams, the programs provide essential support services for thousands of families nationwide and are even more critical during times of COVID-19. SWIMMING AGAINST THE TIDE Why is it that sometimes, simply trying to do something good can be so damn hard? For years now, in one way or another I have been trying to get our local Council and our local Business Chamber and Orange 360 to start doing things that will actually generate more customers for local retailers. For some reason, they seem bent on doing all manner of things that they seem to think will generate more customers for local retailers, and I don’t mean retailers that could reasonably expect to benefit from tourist related initiatives. It’s been the same for as long as I can remember, and they still don’t get it. Recent initiatives include giving away $50,000 worth of Shop Orange Gift Cards, that was a noble but commercially lame exercise, now they want to provide businesses with help to build websites, and they want to put “old” pictures of Orange in vacant shop windows. They are also talking about spending $50,000 on main street Christmas decorations, that’s something that I have raised year after year for some time now and hello, the lights at Council appear to have just gone on. And then there’s the Future City monster plan where they think doing up the CBD is going to cause people to come to Orange more often.

Of course, all these things have some merit but as serious customer generating initiatives that our retailers need NOW, they just don’t cut it. There are far smarter and wiser ways to get customers and most business owners know that. Giving struggling retailers money to build a website which they probably won’t have the time or resources to effectively benefit from, or putting up Christmas decorations or putting old pictures in empty shop windows is all like giving

someone dying of thirst in the desert a bucket, when actually what they really need is a drink of water. Our retailers need more customers NOW, not in 2, 3 or 4 years time. I’ll keep fighting but I must say that so far, no one connected with Council, the Business Chamber or Orange 360 have shown any inclination to provide the sort of help that’s really needed - some money to be used to specifically encourage more people to shop and do business in Orange more often. That’s the bad news. The good news is that despite the fact that those who should know better aren’t doing anything worthwhile, that’s my professional opinion, Hearts for Orange is! I personally am funding various projects to try and help our local retailers and so far, things are going really well. I hope the results from our Hearts for Orange initiatives might finally show these others what can be achieved when you do things that are worthwhile and done by people who know what they are talking about. We have extensive TV advertising currently on air and we have several great promotions coming up between now and Christmas. One I’d really like you to help spread the word about is our Big Orange Citywide Home Improvement Spectacular to be held over two days on October 30 and 31. Hearts for Orange has put up a $2000 lucky shopper prize for the event and you can read more about how to win in this issue of OC Life. ...Negativity is not going to help....

Workshop Therapy — JONATHAN ROE —

I ran into Les Windus by chance. He was looking to offload a few sheets of pegboard and I had a workshop in desperate need of a little organisation. Being someone with an appreciation for a good workspace, the sight of Les’ neatly ordered and well-equipped workbenches immediately caught my eye. I could probably do a story just on Les’ workshop as I’ve rarely seen one so well put together and with so much obvious careful thought, and I’m also just a little bit jealous of his milling machine. “So what do you make with all this?” I asked, after Les was kind enough to let me have a good stickybeak in his garage. Taking me to a cabinet on one wall of his garage, Les showed me his collection of scale model remote controlled prime movers and various trailer combinations. Starting one of the foot-long models on the bench, a built-in speaker emulates the sounds of a large diesel engine, while each individual light works just

as it would on the real deal. “I’ve actually modified every one of them, sometimes you lengthen the chassis and then you’ve got drive train, so you’ve got to get pieces for that and get that done… then to make it a bit more of a one-off you get alloy wheels and put electronics into them — your headlights work, blinkers work, your backing light, stop lights work,” says Les. Not happy with the standard trailers available in kits, Les has even gone as far as to fabricate his own from scratch. He has made stock crates, B-Double and road train configurations, and currently has a low loader in progress. “And if you put a trailer on a prime mover, you’ve got to have lights on it too… you’ve got to you’ve got to put new wiring in and joints and so it becomes pretty involved,” says Les. Looking at the countless tiny parts and detailed work

OCLife involved in building each of these models it was surprising to discover that, not that long ago, Les couldn’t even hold a spoon to feed himself. “I ended up diagnosed with Guillain Barre syndrome,” he says, “Which is where your own immune system starts attacking your peripherals and I was at the point where I lost all function in my hands and legs and I was in a wheelchair— it was incredibly painful, I was on pretty big doses of MS CONTIN, as well as two other pain killers, just to get myself by.” The trucks, he says, became his form of physical therapy. “There’s so many tiny bits and pieces you have to put together. I really don’t have much feeling in my extremities, so you’ve got to teach your body to work in different ways. I discovered that for really, really tiny stuff I’ve got to use tweezers, but that’s the way getting around the issue that you’ve got. And so that’s where it was all kicked off from,” says Les, who was able to kick his reliance on pain medication and reckons he is back to around 90 per cent of where he used to be. Although it’s far from the only serious health issues that Les has had to overcome in recent years. In 2011, Les - and coincidentally his brother and two close friends - were diagnosed with prostate cancer. “Touch wood I’ve survived that, with issues, but you know at least I’m still here! It’s something that, boy, people need to really be careful of and make sure they get tested, because early detection is so critical in their outcome.” But not long after came another diagnosis. “He said you’ve got multiple myeloma... that’s basically cancer of your bone marrow and that extends into your bones and, let go, your bones end up like aero chocolate, was how he explained it,” says Les. “You’re likely to start breaking bones and that’s

generally how people pick it up first.” Three months of intense chemotherapy followed, but 18 months later Les had to return for more. It was then, his doctor suggested autologous stem cell therapy, which involves harvesting Les’ own stem cells and transplanting them once again after massive doses of chemotherapy. The process, treatment and recovery are far from pleasant. But even when he is describing his low moments, the impression you get from Les is one of overwhelming positivity. “I’ve never felt depressed. I’m not sure why, but I’ve just got this thing that you’ve got live on with what you’ve got and you can’t give up,” he says. “When they diagnosed me with multiple myeloma, I thought it’s only barely two years since I had prostate cancer! And to get two within a very short period sort of sits back on your feet a bit - It really does! And then you get this Guillain-Barre and it was painful, it was just so painful… but you just bite the bullet, you’ve got what you got, so just stick it in background and move on. “Negativity is not going to help. I could have a heart attack tomorrow, could get knocked over by a bus. One thing I’ve sort of maintain all along is you’ve only got to look, not very far, and there’s someone that’s way worse off than what you are.” “And you’ve got to try and be positive for everyone around you as well,” says Les, who believes he would not have got through it all without the support of his wife and family. “To have the backup of your family is…. probably without that you wouldn’t get through. So if you were to throw the towel in and say, ‘I feel crook, I’m sick of this.’ Apart from making yourself feel miserable, you are making a hell of a lot of people around you feel miserable as well. So there’s been lots of things that come along that sort of teach you a few things as you go.”

Tyren and Nick graduate as outstanding role models — MELISE COLEMAN —

School captains and proud young Wiradjuru men, Tyren Dixon and Nick Clarke, have acknowledged key Canobolas Rural Technology High School (CRTHS) support staff and a VERTO Aboriginal Youth Leadership Program for helping them remain in school and successfully graduate in late September. The Aboriginal Youth Leadership Program is delivered by VERTO’s Indigenous Advancement Strategy (IAS) Coordinator, Aunty Mary Croaker, who works with the school and local communities acting as a mentor to help improve educational outcomes for Aboriginal students. Tyren and Nick believe the support they received not only enhanced their cultural experience at school through dancing and Aboriginal studies classes, but helped them build inner strength and create strong community links, among many other benefits. “I absolutely hated school when I started and was desperate to drop out as soon as I could in Year 10,” Vice-Captain Nick said. “If it wasn’t for Aunty Mary, the VERTO Aboriginal Youth Leadership Program and the CRTHS teachers there’s no way that I would have stayed and graduated.” Captain Tyren added, “I was the same. It’s funny now that I look back, the senior years were the best years at school and I’m so glad my teachers, Aunty Mary and other support from Clontarf Foundation helped me stay in school.”

Tyren and Nick’s decision to complete their HSC was well rewarded at their graduation ceremony. Tyren was awarded the highest marks in the school for Aboriginal Studies, and the CRTHS Prize for Leadership. Nick’s awards included the highest marks in the school for mathematics one, The Rotary Club of Orange Daybreak Youth Service Above Self Award and the Archer Prize for Demonstrating Outstanding Leadership from an Indigenous Student. Aunty Mary said, “It has been the best experience working with Tyren and Nick – I’m just so incredibly proud of them. “I still remember when they started in Year 7. To see them now, I’m humbled to know we had a small impact on how far they have become and how they see themselves now - strong Aboriginal men.” “I’m so grateful to be a part of their lives. They’re great people, great role models and have big futures ahead of them.” For Tyren, he hopes that his future includes

Memories by Ned ‘The Ball’ There was excitement in the household. Dad had cleaned and greased the sulky, polished the harness and groomed the horse. We had received an invitation to a ball. I received a most pleasant shock; cooking, cleaning, haus frau Mum was transformed into the Fairy Queen with her long gown, hair up and some makeup on she looked lovely and Dad looked so elegant in his tails. We bundled into the sulky, rug over our knees and off we went. All this was completely new to a sevenyear-old. I was filled with awe; this was not my world at all. When we arrived at the hall I was completely at sea. Then I spotted two of my mates and the world returned to normal. I was told not to get into mischief and that I would be checked on from time to time but I was left to my own resources. In the paddock there were a few cars, lots of sulkies and even a four-wheeler with two black horses. After checking out the cars I gravitated to the ballroom, I was determined not to miss anything. I found a spot behind the band where I could see everything and not be noticed. The hall gradually filled with dancers. The band came in with their boater hats and stripped waistcoats. They settled down with a lot of joking and by this time the hall was full. The Master of Ceremonies cried in a booming voice, “Gentlemen, take your partners for a Foxtrot”. The band leader said, “One two, one, two, three” and off they went. I was fascinated by the sounds and atmosphere, the smell of perfume and mothballs of the kerosene and sawdust used to stop any dust on the dance floor and sprinkled with chalk to make the dancing easier. As the dancing progressed I spotted Mum laughing as she was being whirled around the dance floor, seeing her so happy caused me to choke up, I wanted to shout “Look people, there’s my Mum isn’t she wonderful!” I was fascinated by the elegance of the Varsovienne, Pride of Erin and Waltz

and the sheer raw energy of the Polka, Canadian Two Step and the Gallop, and the greetings and friendship of the Progressive Barn Dance. I was interrupted from my world of music and dance by my mates who beckoned me to join them. Our primordial instinct drew us to the supper room, where Tom’s favourite Aunt, who was in charge of the supper, turned a blind eye while we liberated a pavlova and an bowl of trifle along with a bottle of ginger beer from the big tub of ice. We retreated to ‘our’ banquet hall under the trestle table and did justice to some dear old ladies cooking. After disposing of the said feast, we spotted in a side room a row of boots and shoes ever so neatly lined up where the gentlemen had changed into their dancing pumps. We found such neatness offensive and decided to mix them up and tie the laces indiscriminately. The funny part of it was we got away with it. Some older boys (which we didn’t like because they bullied us and ordered us about) were practical joke inclined, they took a horse out of a sulky, walked him through a gate, pushed the sulky shafts through the fence and harnessed up the horse on the other side. They copped the blame for the boots as well. No one could have possibly thought those three small angelic boys would do a thing like that. At this stage, from the excitement, surfeit of pavlova and trifle and the sound of a slow Waltz, I fell asleep, awakened by the singing of Auld Lang Syne, carried into the sulky and nursed all the way home to the clip clop of hooves, rumble of wheels and Dad humming the dance tunes. Arriving home, I was carried in and put to bed. That, my friends, was my introduction to the wonderful world of music, dance and companionship. OCTOBER 15 —21 , 2020 15

CADIA INVESTS $2 MILLION IN LOCAL COMMUNITY The 2020 financial year was a tough year for many local organisations, but through its Community Investment Program, Newcrest Mining’s Cadia Valley Operations provided $2 million support and assistance to the local community. In early 2020 when COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, Cadia was able to provide direct and immediate financial assistance to the local community through the Newcrest Community Support Fund and Cadia’s Community Partnership Program. The $20 million Newcrest Community Support Fund was established in April 2020 to provide funding towards COVID-19 vaccine research and assist its host communities (including Cadia) with the challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. The areas receiving most support from Cadia’s Community Partnership Program were the local health sector (21%), Indigenous programs (21%), community organisations (16%) and tourism (15%).

2020 BUDGET BREAKDOWN Arguably the most important Federal Budget in almost 80 years was handed down last week. Not since the Great Depression or the Second World War has the global economy been in such poor shape, and as we all know, Australia has not been immune. But the 2020 Federal Budget is about looking ahead, and is focused on getting Aussies back to work. It’s about rebuilding the economy by building the infrastructure for the future and putting regions like Orange on the road to recovery. Here’s how:

FOR WORKERS AND BUSINESS OWNERS There are tax cuts for 11 million Aussies. Low and middle income earns will receive a one-off additional tax offset of up to $1,080. A new JobMaker hiring credit will be available for employers who hire people on JobSeeker, aged 16-35. This will support around 450,000 jobs for young people. The $1 billion JobTrainer Fund will create up to 340,000 free or low cost training places for school leavers and job seekers. A new 50 per cent wage subsidy will support 100,000 new apprentices and traineeships.

The $1.5 billion Modern Manufacturing Strategy will make Aussie manufacturers more resilient, competitive and better equipped to compete globally, including strategic Government investments in projects that help manufacturers to scale up and create jobs.

The Australian Government will spend $14 billion in new and accelerated infrastructure projects, supporting 100,000 jobs on worksites across the country. This includes $2 billion for road safety upgrades and $1 billion for councils to upgrade local roads, footpaths and street lighting.

FOR FAMILIES, HOUSEHOLDS AND COMMUNITIES There’s a record $115.5 billion spending on health including hospitals, disability services and $1.6 billion for a record 23,000 additional home care packages. Pensioners and people on family or income support payments will receive $500 in bonus cash payments to boost spending. Education will receive a $51 billion investment, including $10.3 billion for early childhood education and child care and $550 million for additional university places and short courses.

NBN Co will spend $300 million to improve internet connectivity, providing an estimated 950,000 homes and businesses in regional Australia with access to ultrafast broadband speeds. There’s also a $250 million Regional Tourism Recovery Package to boost local infrastructure in regional communities, particularly tourism-related infrastructure, and help regional tourism businesses adapt their offerings to appeal to domestic visitors.

FOR FARMERS & FARMING BUSINESSES The Budget includes a desperately-needed $50 million extension of the Emergency Water Infrastructure Rebate Scheme - something I have fought hard to deliver to local farmers. There is $2 billion in new funding for dams, pipelines and weirs. An additional $2 billion will be available in concessional loans for farmers to get through the drought. Boosting export capabilities and technology including: $222.2 million for digital services to take farmers to market and almost $100 million to improve the meat and plant export industries. More than $33 million will be spent on incentives for young Australians to take up farm work.

ANOTHER $2 MILLION FOR ORANGE’S SOUTHERN FEEDER RD PROJECT Commencement of Stage 4 of the Southern Feeder Road Project has edged one step closer after a $2 million boost under Round 7 of the Australian Government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety Productivity Program (HVSPP). The additional funding brings the Australian Government’s total contribution to the multi-stage Southern Feeder Road Project to $9.17 million. Stage 4 will reduce congestion along some of the busiest streets in Orange such as Anson Street and Summer Street, while also improving the safety and efficiency of freight movement for our region’s agricultural businesses and mining operations. It will also provide a vital link between the highway, Leewood Estate, the health precinct and the new Shiralee housing area. I’m looking forward to seeing shovels in the ground to get this crucial piece of infrastructure underway.

NATIONAL CARERS WEEK — MELISE COLEMAN — ‘To all of the unpaid carers out there, this National Carers Week we acknowledge and celebrate the outstanding contribution you make to those you care for and the community.’ Did you know Orange has approximately 6839 unpaid carers? You can be any age and be helping a family member or friend who has a disability, chronic illness, dementia, mental illness, an addiction or is frail aged. Carers can be family members or friends, they can be parents, children, siblings, grandparents or neighbours. Some carers look after another person 24 hours a day and help with daily living activities, while other carers look after people who are fairly independent but need help with some everyday tasks. This National Carers week LiveBetter Orange are encouraging the Orange community who feel this might be them, to get in touch and engage in Carer Gateway. Carer Gateway is a free, nation-wide service connecting carers to support services. LiveBetter Carer Gateway Program Manager, Bonny Stephens explained the main goal is to assist carers, to firstly acknowledge that they are carers and secondly let them know that they are doing a great job. “The role of a carer is often challenging but also rewarding knowing you are helping someone. We want to let carers know that they don’t have to do it alone, supports are out there and Carer Gateway is a great starting point,” said Bonny. “We provide a range of phone-based, online and face to face services and supports, including phone counselling, respite, navigating financial support services, online forums and skills courses, transport assistance and more. “It’s been a difficult year for unpaid carers, with limited services, the social and aged care sector restrictions. Many carers have isolated themselves this year not wanting to expose the people they care for to COVID. Carers are supporting some of the most vulnerable people in our community.” So, how can Carer Gateway assist you? The service provides a range of information that can help carers in their role, from practical advice and resources, to help finding support services including:

We’re extending the JobKeeper Payment until 28 March 2021. The Australian Government is extending the temporary JobKeeper Payment to the end of March 2021. From 28 September, businesses must meet the turnover test and submit their declarations by the 14th of each month. There will be two new payment rates – one for those who work more than 20 hours per week in the relevant period, and another for those who work less. The employee eligibility date has also changed to 1 July, meaning some businesses could claim for more staff. It’s part of our plan to keep business in business, and Australians in jobs.

The Orange Art Society’s Featured Artist for October, Katrina McFarlane, is a born and bred Orange girl who loves art. A self-taught artist, Katrina makes a point to challenge herself with every piece she creates. “I love colour and I love animals and this is reflected in many of my works,” said Katrina. “My hope is to evoke positive emotions to those who view my art, like it does me.” Art has always been a huge part of Katrina’s life, but it has only been recently that she has been able to wholeheartedly focus on creating some serious artwork. She also enjoys the challenge of commissioned work and is currently completing a number of commissioned pieces.

“I love to experiment with different mediums and styles and my work is always evolving,” she said. “Creating art makes me happy!” Everyone is welcome to browse Katrina’s exhibition at the Orange Art Society Gallery in Sale Street (entry located at the rear of the Woolworth’s carpark near Harris Farm). You may even find Katrina in the art rooms creating more of her colourful art! The official opening of the exhibition will be held on Saturday, 17th October from 2:30pm to 3:30pm. Although numbers will be limited due to current COVID-19 restrictions, it will be a great opportunity to come and meet Katrina. More of Katrina’s art can be found at 'KatMac Studio' on Facebook.

Sit back and enjoy a virtual visit to some of our region’s most stunning cool climate gardens as the popular Millthorpe Garden Ramble goes online.

Now in its 17th year, the physical event had to be cancelled due to COVID. The health and safety of the garden owners, the 120+ volunteers and ramblers being paramount, said Organisers.
