Who would have thought? Snow in late September. Still, it was pretty, and no doubt generated a zillion photos of Orange sent to all parts of the world yet again.

It’s also a bit of a scary thought but Christmas is now only 13 weeks away and given the situation we’re in, who knows what Christmas 2020 is going to be like, probably like no other we’ve ever experienced. I wonder if Santa will need a mask, and whether some people might put a sign on their chimney, “Sorry Santa, we’re under lockdown, no chimney access, please leave presents at front door! FYI - gift cards preferred this year.” It also makes you wonder about those Christmas sales where thousands of people charge through doors to grab the bargains. It’s hard to imagine a controlled stampede of say 10 -20 people allowed in at a time. The big Carols by Candlelight events should also be interesting, if they’re held, especially if people have to sit several metres apart. This year, it may just be a television event with no crowd??

n July 2019, little Judd Cantrill had completely stopped breathing.. after several doctor and hospital visits, he was later diagnosed with a hole in his heart, a genetic disorder, malrotation of his intestines and more. As the family swiftly relocated to Sydney that same year, it was the first time the Ronald McDonald House became their home away from home. Mum, Alana Cantrill explained, “We weren’t only offered a roof over our head, but a support network I could never have imagined. The generosity, care and love are what helped to keep us pushing through those tough days. "Without Ronald McDonald House, Judd wouldn't have had his sisters by his side which is crucial for his recovery and has helped keep him happy. I would have struggled dealing not only with my son’s

medical conditions but also being away from our girls.” Last year, dedicated family members and the Orange community all came together and held a Run for Judd event raising $30,000 for Ronald McDonald House Charities Greater Western SydneyIncredible! “We were astonished by the support from the Orange community,” said Alana. “It was a feeling I just can’t explain, to see how many people loved and supported our boy and family was the most incredible feeling, we felt blessed to have such an amazing support network.” On Saturday October 24, the Cantrill's are kicking it up a notch and the family, as well as a dedicated team of RMHC supporters, are jumping on their bikes and riding a whopping 230km+ trip from Ronald McDonald House Westmead in Sydney, to Ronald McDonald House in Orange. A trip

that as a family, the Cantrill’s have done many times, and will do many more, as Judd continues to receive ongoing care at Westmead Hospital.

CHALLENGING TIME FOR BUSINESS OWNERS This week sees the start of a very challenging time for many business owners, myself included. This is the first week of the second round of Jobkeeper payments and I suspect many businesses, like ourselves, may not be entitled to the help this time around. I think the result of this may see a lot of businesses who have been able to survive the first six months of the crisis with the help of Jobkeeper payments, decide to close if they don’t qualify for the second round. Keep in mind that during the first round, eligible businesses received $750 a week for each eligible employee for six months, this will drop to $600 a week for Round Two. That in itself will not be the main problem for many employers. Basically, to qualify for Jobkeeper payments, a business has to demonstrate that they have suffered a 30% or more drop in turnover over the comparable period last year. That is a fairly simplistic method of qualifying, but I suspect that in a lot of cases, such a simplistic method may work against some business owners, as I think it will in our case. Let me use our business as an example.

When the crisis first hit, and before Jobkeeper was announced, we put in place a strategy that I hoped would see us survive long enough to make a more informed judgement once the situation became clearer. We were however, like so many others, under the severe threat of being overwhelmed by the situation. We slashed and burned as the saying goes because it was a desperate situation.

We had no sooner finalized our plans when Jobkeeper was announced, and because we qualified for Round One of Jobkeeper under the then criteria, this meant among other things, that I was able to keep all my staff on their existing arrangements. This time around however, it’s not so simple for us and I suspect it’s the same for many others as well. It appears this time we will fall slightly short of the 30% drop in turnover required to qualify, and therefore be ineligible. The problem is, although not down by 30% on last year, we are down by close to it, which means we are still under great threat and will still have to take further drastic steps if we are to survive the next stage of the crisis. Do you see my point? Despite not being down by 30%, our turnover is still down by around 25% which is still enough to potentially sink us. That is not to say we will go under, but right now the threat is real and I’ll have to think long and hard on how to overcome it. I suspect many other small business owners will be in the same boat. Now let’s be clear about the point I’m making here. I’m not whinging or complaining, it is what it is and I for one am so grateful to have received Jobkeeper support for the last six months. My point is, that the party is now over for a lot of employers and I think it is very likely that many who don’t qualify for round two will simply decide to give up and close, and that will see a lot more hardship for a lot more people than we are currently seeing. It’s not a pretty scenario but I think we need to face the fact, and that it’s highly likely to start happening very soon. All the more reason for us all to earnestly take up the Hearts for Orange challenge that says - “If you love Orange, spend your money where your heart is!”

A day on Grandpa’s farm

s a child, my family lived in a renovated shearers quarters and every year from the paddock next to us would come the bleating, barking, whistling cacophony of shearing time. Reading Allan Robinson’s Grandpa’s Farm: A Spring Day and I am immediately taken back to memories of these times; to the smell of lanoline, dust and grease and the angry buzz of the shears and the clatter of sheep’s hooves on the board.

“That’s the thing I’ve been most encouraged by, anyone who knows what the life is like said they are the most authentic reflections of rural life that they’ve come across,” said Alan, a retired Uniting Church Minister, children’s book Author and Illustrator. “Many of the children’s picture books about farms are American or they are British — there are some based in Australia — but I’m just pleased that so many people have said to me, that could be where I grew up.” Indeed, the shearing shed depicted in Alan’s book could easily be the shed of my childhood, (if not for the green grass and hills in place where red sand plain and bluebush should be). Alan and his wife Sharyn retired in Orange just over two years ago. But for both of them it was a return home of sorts, Alan having

— JONATHAN ROE — grown up near Young and Sharyn in Parkes. “My dad was a fifth-generation farmer on that place, so we go back to Goldrush times,” said Alan, who spent six years working alongside his father and brothers on “Springview” after leaving school. “I went to work with my Dad for a number of years before I left there for education and other employment and ended up as a Minister of the Uniting church,” said Alan, who, in his 20s, had also dabbled drawing political cartoons for the Young newspaper. Art and illustrating remained a hobby for Alan until a friend put him in touch with Author Gordon Winch, who at the time was looking for an Illustrator for his book Do You Know Millie? “It came as a bit of a bolt out of the blue, but someone knew me and knew Gordon, I ended up getting the gig and it went really well, so that’s how I got started on picture books,” said Alan, who soon found himself inspired to write his own. “Straight after that, my wife and I went on holiday to the South Island where I got the inspiration for Grandpa’s Farm: A Spring Day. I saw all these ewes and lambs and the poem came to me as we were driving along, just remembering my times on the farm and

shearing time... I had three sons and they loved coming on school holidays to their grandfather’s farm with Uncle Pete, so I that’s how I got the idea.” Grandpa’s Farm — A Spring Day and Grandpa’s Farm — A Summer’s Day were both published in 2009, each detailing different aspects of farm life at the different times of year. “It is one day in one season and the experience of this boy, who is really an amalgamation of my three sons… all of this is based around family and so it is quite important to me in many respects. “Grandpa’s Farm: A Spring Day is about a day of shearing and then Grandpa’s Farm: A Summer’s Day deals with a harvest and bushfire… over the last six months I’ve been producing those next two in the context of autumn and winter.” Each of the books is written in the style of a bush ballad, something Alan was steeped in since childhood, and the illustrations have been inspired by places across the Central West, including Orange. The Autumn and Winter volumes of the series are currently being printed and due out later this year. Alan’s books are available at Collin’s Booksellers and the Orange Visitors Information Centre.

Learning to dwell in the sometimes

Argentinian Architect and Sketch Artist Franco D’Elia is enjoying finding peace and a sense of place through his art. “Cada tanto means sometimes,” says Franco D’Elia, explaining the meaning behind his Artists nom-de-plume, which is also a kind of life philosophy he has adopted. A recently graduated Architecture student from Buenos Aires, Franco is in Australia on a working holiday Visa and is spending time working in the Central West before embarking on his dream surfing exploration of the east coast. Art is only a fairly recent discovery for Franco, who found his inspiration exploring the streets of New York City late last year. “I started drawing seriously, like fine drawing, only since August last year,” says Franco. “I made a trip to New York where I was surprised with the buildings, the big city and I started enjoying just sitting there in the moment, drawing, connecting to the place, the surroundings, the people asking what I'm doing, meeting new people socialising and then I

realised it was like a passion.”

Prior to that, drawing had been luxury that did not fit into Franco’s life. With the stress of finishing his University studies and other responsibilities, Franco said too often time for himself would come only once in a while, cada tanto, sometimes.

“I started selling, almost like busking in the streets,” he said. “It was kind of a show, because I'd put on some music, then kids come and maybe they want to draw with me… Living from my drawings was really tough, it was difficult, because I’d be on the street sketching and trying to show it to people, or I’d draw a house and then knock on the door and maybe, if they like it, try to sell it.

It was something he decided had to change. “There were only small moments when I felt like I was really doing something for myself, enjoying the present, and I would say, why do you just do this only one time per month? If I’m having so much fun, pleasure let's start doing this more often! “So sometimes, cada tanto, started being more like a lifestyle. Don’t just do what you really love or your passions or what makes you happy sometimes, but do it more often.” Arriving alone in Sydney with limited English, Franco started using art to connect with people

“I was a good experience, you know, I feel confident of myself… Before that I never spoke English, and now being in this situation, talking with you, it is like a goal I never imagined myself last year! But it all comes from saying ‘Yes’ to those ‘sometimes’ opportunities, says Franco. “You have to find a way to make things happen for you. You have to give yourself the opportunity for surprise, be spontaneous, meet

people… because if you say I will save this for another moment when I have more free time, when I'm better within myself and not thinking about these problems then you find out that most of the time — at least for myself — I was doing things for someone else or what I ‘should’ do. “But I said, let's change this equation, let's do it differently and start doing things now, not later. Even if I am sick or struggling with myselfm I say ok let's do it. Dogs need protection from Heartworm. This is a parasite carried by mosquitos, which used to occur only in warmer parts of Australia. It’s now appearing in every state and even in the Central West. Heartworms in an infected dog grow in the lungs and heart, and can be fatal. An annual injection keeps heartworms at bay, but its dangerous to start your dog on Heartworm protection without testing them for the parasite first. Cats need an annual injection to protect them from CatFlu, feline enteritis, and if your cat goes outside, Feline AIDS. Regular worming for cats is important – for the good health of your cat and also to protect your family. If your cat uses a litter tray, then the careful disposal of soiled litter is essential and, ideally, the tray should be disinfected weekly with boiling water.

Fleas love to lay eggs on pets (and occasionally even in our homes!). They can transmit other parasites such as worms, to your cat or dog. The scratching that our poor pets do to try and get rid of fleas causes infections and damage to the skin. Orange is a “hotspot” for a horrible doggy disease called Parvovirus, which causes severe haemorrhagic gastroenteritis. It’s highly contagious, and can be picked up from the ground when walking, or even carried on your clothes! Puppies are particularly vulnerable, needing intensive care in hospital if they’re going to have a chance of recovery. A simple injection will protect your dog, so puppies should have a series of injections starting when they are 6-8 weeks old. Your precious new pup isn’t fully protected from Parvovirus until after their last needle, so no outside walks or playing with unvaccinated dogs until after that time. There are only so many things one can do during the COVID-19 restrictions, but among those that we can do is shopping, and that in itself is a really good thing. When we shop, and particularly at local businesses, we’re helping our local economy and part of that is helping keep people in jobs. Hearts for Orange is right on the front foot helping local retailers stay on top of the current challenges and we’re doing that in a number of ways. These two pages give some details about several of the initiatives we’re doing over the next few months and I’d encourage all local retailers to familiarize themselves with what we’re doing, we want as many as possible to participate so we can make between now and Christmas a great and enjoyable shopping period for everyone. AUTOMATION PAVES WAY FOR SAFER MINING AT CADIA A loader automation trial is currently underway at Newcrest’s Cadia Valley Operations (Cadia) to remove mining personnel from underground hazards – paving the way for safer and more efficient mining at Australia’s largest underground mining operation.

“The trial has shown the Epiroc system and loaders to be effective, precise, and – most importantly – safe,” Aaron said.

The trial commenced in 2018 with the aim of removing operators from the Cadia East underground production environment, while maintaining productivity and performance.

Epiroc Business Line Manager Underground Division, Shaiful Ali, said Cadia purchased the initial loader, and Epiroc has contributed four additional loaders as direct support to progress the trial development and extension

Cadia initially trialled three automation providers, before engaging in a partnership with mining equipment manufacturer, Epiroc, to develop their product for a high speed, high rate caving operation. A key reason for selecting Epiroc was their willingness to adapt their product to Cadia’s requirements, including readiness to integrate with third party machines to achieve a fully automated production level.

Cadia General Manager Aaron Brannigan said Cadia has a long-term plan to advance autonomous loading in Cadia East’s Panel Cave environment, which will reduce major hazard risks and enhance the current and future operations.

New menu delights at Orange Ex-Services’ Club

Next time you are in town, call in to the Orange Ex-Services’ Club and taste the fresh, new coffee shop menu. Executive Sous Chef, Danny Evans and the Chef team have collaborated with the Orange Ex-Services’ Club Coffee Shop staff to put together a mouth-watering menu of tasty coffee shop delights with all items baked, cooked and made on-site. “The new menu items are made with all fresh ingredients delivered to the Orange Ex-Services’ Club where we prepare them with respect and don’t take any short cuts. We take the time to get each item right, with attention to detail and a focus on

flavour, so our members and guests have a great culinary experience,” said Chef Danny. The new menu caters for everything from a light lunch — with fresh salads, frittatas, quiches and toasted sandwiches — to decadent afternoon teas with pastries, pavlova, muffins and tasty tarts. Look out for Chef Danny’s favourite menu items; the Beef, Mushroom and Red Wine Pie; and the Orange Almond Cake. “The aim of the new menu was to create delicious items, that people would love to eat everyday, that are fresh, delicious and affordable.” Chef Danny prepared the new items for staff to taste on Monday morning and we can report that the team gave his food a big thumbs up!

The proposal is to build another road bridge alongside the existing Forest Road bridge by providing a second 30-metre long bridge deck over the main western rail line to provide a separate south bound lane.

The duplication will make a huge difference to the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. This bridge gets heavy use including by mine workers, the health workforce at the hospital, and families heading out to Jack Brabham Park for sport.

A new bridge will see less congestion along Peisley Street and Anson Street. The Federal Government previously committed $1.25 million to the project which had been sought by Council before it was cancelled, so I hope this new funding injection of $2 million can now get this project kick-started.

SAVING SLEEPY DRIVERS WITH $20,000 GRANT

Road safety will be top of mind for drivers these school holidays, thanks to a new road safety sign in Orange which aims to raise awareness of nearby rest facilities. This week I announced a $20,000 upgrade to the Driver Reviver site on the outskirts of Orange, thanks to Round One of the Australian Government’s Driver Reviver Upgrade Program. The funding will go towards a high-visibility sign at the Driver Reviver site. This great initiative was built by the Orange Lions Club and volunteer tradies 12 years ago and is now operated by about 20 volunteers who are absolute legends in giving up their time to save country lives. Driver Reviver sites are a wellrecognised feature of Aussie road trips, operating for 30 years to

provide travellers with free drinks, snacks and friendly conversation as they take a break. This vital funding will help the wonderful volunteers at the Driver Reviver site to continue the critical work that they do, which sometimes means saving lives of those that may have fallen asleep at the wheel. The new, solar powered sign is state-of-the art. It can be controlled remotely with technology that facilitates tailored messaging. It is also able to be transported to different sites to maximise road safety when and where it is needed most. The Orange Driver Reviver site is particularly vital over long weekends and specific periods such as school holidays.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON NATIONAL YOUTH POLICY Young people in Orange are being urged to have their say on the issues that matter to them as the Australian Government prepares its National Youth Policy Framework. Young leaders, youth organisations and relevant government agencies are invited to provide their views ahead of the implementation of the framework, providing a pathway of continued support for young people around Australia. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in particular, many young Aussies are dealing with disruptions

to their education, sudden unemployment, mental health issues and economic insecurity within the family. So, my colleagues and I want to hear from our youth, particularly those aged 15 to 24, about the policies that affect them via an online survey. We’re extending the JobKeeper Payment until 28 March 2021. The Australian Government is extending the temporary JobKeeper Payment to the end of March 2021. From 28 September, businesses must meet the turnover test and submit their declarations by the 14th of each month. There will be two new payment rates – one for those who work more than 20 hours per week in the relevant period, and another for those who work less. The employee eligibility date has also changed to 1 July, meaning some businesses could claim for more staff. It’s part of our plan to keep business in business, and Australians in jobs.

In late July I had the great privilege to announce that the $25 million for the Orange Sports Precinct has been fast tracked and Orange City Council can get cracking on preliminary works.

On 21 August 1989, The Hon. Ian Armstrong announced the relocation of the Department of Agriculture head office from Sydney to Orange - the largest decentralisation project in our Nation’s history.

It was fantastic to turn the first sod with Mayor Cr Reg Kidd, Cr Jason Hamling and local cricketing super star Pheobe Litchfield!

Earlier this month Ian’s legacy started a new chapter.

PJ’s Make Better! Bowen Public School students donned pyjamas and dressing gowns last Thursday in a fundraiser for Orange’s local charity Let’s Make Better.

The student’s gold coin donations raised $220 for the charity, which since 2016, has making sure every dollar raised goes to where it is needed, and does not get eaten up by administration expenses. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has put a halt on some of Let’s Make Better’s long running programs like the weekly lunch for Orange’s homeless and the free breakfast program enjoyed by the kids at Bowen Public School. Accepting the donations on Thursday, Let’s Make Better representative Jessie Blissard said they are keen to restart the breakfast program as soon as possible. You can help the work of Let’s Make Better, by donating at the checkouts at Ashcroft’s IGA supermarkets or contributing pantry goods to their collection cages. At the moment, the Summer Centre is collecting for the local Meals on Wheels program, while Peisley Street donations are going to assist the Molong Pantry.

Dam good news! Orange’s water storage levels are the highest they’ve been in two-and-a-half years! On Friday, Council announced that water restrictions for city residents have been relaxed to City is on level two after the combined water storage level hit the trigger point of 60 per cent. The last time the combined storage level of Spring Creek Dam and Suma Park Dam was 60 per cent, was in April 2018. Suma Park is now more than half full with water flowing at a height of 97 mm over the Spring Creek spillway. “We’re heading into summer with a good amount of water in the dams, so it is time now to ease our restrictions back to level two,” said Orange Mayor Reg Kidd. Level two restrictions allows the watering of lawns between set hours on the odds and evens system, something Orange residents have come to live with in recent years even with more water in storage. “We have previously lived with the odds and evens system for over a decade regardless of how high the storage levels in the dam were above 60 per cent,” said Cr Kidd.

“Orange has been a leader in the state in terms of water saving and we have set a benchmark for other cities. We must keep up the good work and use water where we need to but be mindful about wastage.” Council’s independent modelling is showing steady increases in the combined water storage for quite some time into the future. “We still need to make every drop count but it’s great that this summer we’ll be able to reap the rewards of a well looked after vegie garden and the kids will be able to jump into backyard pools and the littlies will be able to splash about in those inflatable paddle pools,” Cr Kidd said. “After a tough year it’ll be good to hear the sounds of summer.” And the wet weather is set to continue into summer, according to the latest outlook from the Bureau of Meteorology. With a La Nina Warning in place, the Bureau is giving better than a 75 per cent chance of above average rainfall during October to December. The median rainfall for Orange during this period is 224mm.

READER'S SHORT STORY

Not Just Any House…

By Gail Knight. Wendy drained her coffee cup and sighed as she placed it on the saucer; the crockery was rather elegant for a motel. She smiled ruefully as she settled back in the easy chair, thinking it was a shame the bed wasn’t as classy, her body ached all over from the hard mattress. Rising to her feet she stretched her arms above her head and tried a few hip wiggles to loosen up, before snatching a towel from the end of the bed and heading for the shower. Sunshine greeted her as she emerged from the dimly lit room, and her spirits lifted a little. Perhaps today she would find a suitable house. Checking her watch she realised she was much too early to meet with Janet from Realty, to see what options she had in store for her. All the houses they had looked at yesterday were quite grand, and Hugh would surely tell her to settle for one and stop agonising. In his opinion a flashy house with a huge entertaining area was vital to their lifestyle, but Wendy was tired of the big modern day homes. To her they were cold and uncomfortable with ducted heating, tiled floors and glass doors leading into rooms, rarely lived in, mainly being just for show. Settling herself behind the wheel of her Mazda 5 she turned the key bringing the motor to life. To fill in time she decided to take a drive around the big country town, which was actually bordering on a small city. When Hugh had accepted the transfer with his firm, and announced they were moving from the city to the country, she had been amazed. He was a city slicker; Wendy couldn’t imagine him living anywhere else. As she perused the streets she thought how peaceful it was without all the hustle and bustle of Sydney, calmness warmed her, she could be happy here… if she found the right house.

Finding employment for her would also be an issue, she had yet to approach the hospital for a position on staff, anything would be acceptable, although she hoped it would be in midwifery, even though she was fully qualified for other areas. If nothing was available to her there she would just have to find something else. Wendy laughed to herself, with Hugh holding a high profile position he would have a fit if she found employment at Best and Less. He could be such a snob, appearances were so important to him. Checking her watch she noted it was almost time to meet Janet. Pulling into a side street to find a suitable turning spot she discovered it to be a cul-de-sac, as she followed it around her eye fell upon a stately old house. Wendy stopped the car. Something compelled her to get out and have a closer look. ‘What a wonderful old house’ she whispered walking to the front gate. Pale lavender wisteria danced along the length of the wide bull-nosed veranda, which appeared to surround the house. Paint was peeling around the lead light windows and the tiled path was cracked and chipped. The garden was wild and unkempt, but none of this mattered to Wendy as she stood there drinking in the old-world charm of the dilapidated house. The urge to see more overwhelmed her. She wanted to look inside, but how? It looked deserted, but there wasn’t a For Sale sign displayed. Climbing back in the car she rummaged for a pen and paper to jot down the street and number, she would ask Janet to make inquiries… Hugh would think her crazy… it was as if the old house was beckoning to her… Janet O’ Riley gave Wendy an incredulous look ‘Yes I know the old house in Benton Place, but I don’t

think it has been listed for sale. I don’t understand… you were looking for something up-market, in the newer part of town, why would you want to look at that derelict old place.’ Wendy laughed ‘ I know it seems foolish, I just have this strange feeling that I need to see inside, but I guess if it is not on the market I will have to forget about it.’ Janet picked up her folder from the desk ‘Shall we go then, there is a lovely home in Birch Drive and one in Clover Avenue that might be what you are looking for.’ Wendy smothered a sigh and followed her out to the car. Clipping her seat belt into place Janet turned to Wendy ‘I do actually know who owns the old house; it belongs to the MacClafferty’s. Old Mrs MacClafferty passed away a few months ago. Sean MacClafferty and his sister Sarah would probably be the inheritors, they both live in the Territory, somewhere remote. Sarah is married, her husband has a big station and I think Sean helps them out or works for them,’ she gave a shrug ‘ maybe they will sell later, when things are settled, or they may make it a rental, they will need to do a few repairs whatever they decide.’ Wendy sat back in the passenger seat and stared at the manicured gardens along the way. A flicker of hope stirred… if she could just find Sean. Kicking off her shoes Wendy poured a glass of wine and sank into the lounge chair. It had been another long day, if only Hugh had come with her to give an opinion on these houses. The one in Birch Drive had more of a Hugh look about it than any of the others. Picking up the phone she dialled his number, hoping to persuade him into coming up in the next couple of days, and she also wondered how the open house went today at their unit in Paddington.

READER'S SHORT STORY Church bells pealing heralding Sunday morning awakened Wendy, she had overslept. Her breakfast tray had arrived while she slumbered so the scrambled eggs were probably cold. After speaking with Hugh the previous evening, who said he was far too busy to come up at the moment, he was sure to be happy with her choice of house; she had finished off the bottle of wine and missed dinner. Her head ached and her mouth was dry as she buttered toast and attempted to try the just warm egg. Strong coffee and a good hot shower lifted her mood and she left the dreary room to enjoy the beautiful sunny day. It came as no surprise to Wendy to eventually find herself standing on the nature strip in front of the old house in Benton Place. The sun beamed on her shoulders and she stood there cocooned in its warmth, with an unexplained feeling of tranquillity. She wasn’t aware of anything until the roar of an engine startled her out of her trance. Regaining her composure she turned to observe a young man clamber from a mud spattered NissenNavara Dual Cab. Wendy had not heard the vehicle approach and it was nearly on the footpath! ‘Sorry miss, did I give you a bit of a fright? There’s not a lot of room in this cul-de-sac, are you looking for anyone in particular? I know most of the folk around here.’ Wendy smiled, ‘Oh, no I have just been admiring this lovely old house, and wishing I could see what it is like on the inside.’ ‘Well you’re in luck then. I’ve come to start clearing things out so you can have a look through while I am here.’ Wendy couldn’t believe her ears! ‘Really, are you quite sure it is alright for me to do so, I mean without the owner’s permission?’ ‘Quite sure, the owner was my mother.’ The blood drained from her face with shock. ‘So you are Sean MacClafferty?’ He gave her a puzzled look ‘That’s me, am I supposed to know you?’ ‘No of course not…I have been making inquiries about this house. The lady at Realty told me about your mother passing on, and she thought you were still in the Territory…’ He nodded, ‘That would have been Janet who I went to school with.’

As she stood there, a vision of happy children sat around it, drinking hot chocolate and munching on cookies while they swapped stories of daily events. Tears pricked her eyes. She wouldn’t know the joy of motherhood. Wendy had come to terms with the knowledge that she would never cradle a child of her own. Hugh had appeared devastated when she lost their baby two years ago, and the operation that followed to save her life. She brushed a tear from her cheek; the memory was still raw to her. Hugh, however, later down the track seemed relieved; a family would have tied them down, they could travel and pursue their careers. At the time Wendy assumed it was to make her feel better so she accepted it. Hugh with all his money had not seen fit to buy her a ring. When she fell pregnant she thought he would propose, but he made no such commitment. Matrimony was ‘old hat’ to him, just a piece of paper. The door from the kitchen led out to a small covered courtyard with hanging pots of coloured geraniums, a few pots of cacti and some other plant Wendy didn’t recognise. A large wooden table with bench seats dominated one side near a gas Barbecue. Wendy sighed; this was a perfect place for a family to be raised. Wendy had been blinded by love… even after his short fling with a member on his staff… she had forgiven him, blamed herself because she had let her appearance slide, losing the baby had taken its toll. Hugh liked her to dress elegant and be well groomed to fit in with his image. She walked through the courtyard to the rear garden where Sean was busy clearing rubbish from a shed.

Sean walked toward the big iron gate at the side ‘I’m taking my Ute’ through to the back shed I’ll unlock the ront door and you can have a look, if you like. It’s been closed up for a bit so it will smell musty.’ Wendy hesitated, considering if it would be wise to go into the house on her own, particularly with a strange man lurking at the back. She certainly wouldn’t do such a thing in the city, but this was the country and he seemed okay… and it was such a coincidence for him to be there. The latch clicked on the front door followed by ‘It’s open!’ from Sean. Wendy took a deep breath and walked toward it.

‘Seen enough have you?’ he smiled, wiping sweat from his brow. Wendy noted the strong jaw line of his tanned face, he was well built, she wondered about his age… she guessed about the mid- thirties. ‘Thank you so much for allowing me to see through your home,’ Wendy gave a nervous cough. ‘I was wondering if you are going to put it on the market in the near future?’ Sean turned to take a long look at her. The colour rose to her cheeks under his gaze, in her hurry to dress and get out her face was void of makeup, something she would never do in the city, and her auburn hair, always perfectly styled; she had pulled into a careless ponytail. Turning to throw a broken box on the Ute he frowned. ‘Haven’t thought about it tell you the truth, my sister and I haven’t discussed it. The old place holds a lot of happy memories for us. I’ve taken a couple of weeks off to paint and patch things up a bit. Sara might want to stay here when she visits town… ’ Wendy tried hard not to let her disappointment show, silly as it seemed she was forming great plans for this house, it was so right for her.

big smoke to live here?’ Sean tossed more rubbish on the Ute, ‘you’ll find the lifestyle a bit more laid back. I take it you haven’t found a place yet?’ ‘Unfortunately no,’ she replied in a wistful tone ‘the only one that has my interest is your house.’ Sean stopped what he was doing and leaned on the Ute with his arms folded. ‘Well, as I’ve already said, we haven’t made any plans for mum’s house yet, it’s still going through probate. We may decide to sell later.’ Wendy let out a sigh and smiled at him ‘Thank you anyway for indulging me; it was kind of you to allow a stranger into your property.’ ‘No worries, only too pleased to oblige. Where are you staying now?’ he asked. ‘At the Settlers Inn just off the main street. I should leave now and let you get on with what you are doing,’ said Wendy ‘thank you again.’ As she turned to go Sean spoke ‘Are you staying there alone?’ Wendy blushed ‘Yes I am actually.’ Clearing his throat nervously Sean looked at her ‘It can be a bit lonely in a motel room by yourself, I’m staying with a mate and his family. He is throwing a Barbie later. Would you like to come? It would give you a chance to meet some of the townsfolk.’ Wendy looked at him in astonishment; he didn’t even know her name. She was about to refuse… but something in the way he stood there in grubby jeans and dusty boots with his Akubra tilted on a head of dark curls… made her decide to accept the invitation. OOOOOO ‘Good heavens Wendy… you can’t be serious!’ spluttered Hugh on the other end of the line ‘ How could you do this to me after all we have been through together, you must be out of your mind!’ ‘Please see to it Hugh, I’m sorry, but I won’t change my mind,’ Wendy snapped replacing the receiver. Attending the Barbecue the previous afternoon had been such fun. Everyone had been so friendly… and the food… a full sheep on a spit… she had never seen that before. After a few wines she joined in the singing and even tried to do an Irish jig with Sean. It was a part of her she didn’t know existed. Sean had been the perfect gentleman calling for her in his dusty Ute to take her out to the rambling farm house of his friend. She felt as if she had been reborn, realization her life with Hugh was a charade. A stage show, where she was acting a role, to please him and his snobby friends. Wendy had been caught up in all the glamour. It was time for her to move on and make a new life. A good offer had been put in for the unit at Paddington so Hugh would still have enough to finance the house on Birch Drive after she claimed her share of the property. Wendy could only hope Sean and Sarah would in the future put the old home in Benton Place on the market. However if they decided not to do so Wendy was certain that somewhere in this big town, there must be another old home waiting to come alive. Meanwhile she would move from the motel into suitable accommodation, and get established to put in an application. Whatever her house, it would be a home for children; she was well-qualified to become a Foster Parent.

Discount Desexing program for cats and dogs Orange City Council is sponsoring a discounted desexing program for cats and dogs owned by pension card holders. The fee for desexing, microchipping and registering a cat or dog will be $50 under the program and is available for one pet per household. The program is available in October to people with a pensioner concession card. Funding is limited and will be allocated on a first-in basis. Orange Mayor Reg Kidd said Council wanted to ease the financial burden on people who owned pets and wanted to ensure the wellbeing of these pets was being considered. “Council has decided to set aside some funding to help pension card holders who may be struggling financially to make sure their cat or dog receives these important procedures,” Cr Kidd said. “Ultimately it is the responsibility of the community to make sure their pets are microchipped, desexed and registered.” Eligible Orange residents should visit Orange City Council’s customer service desk, from 9am Thursday 1 October, to enquire about the program. Once the fee is paid, the pet is booked in to Canobolas Family Pet Hospital to have the procedures completed.
