From the rodeo lifestyle - barrels to bulls, it’s all in a day’s work for Caitlin Ford. Living on a property South of Blayney, her and husband Mick are one of few Bucking bull breeders in the Central West.

nlike many competitors Caitlin admits competing in the rodeo circuit on horseback wasn’t something she took seriously. It was the training of the horses her Mother had rehabilitated and her passion for bucking bulls that took her focus. “I always tried my hardest to be a jack of all trades when it came to different disciplines and horsemanship,” Caitlin explained, “Though with the bulls, I just loved watching them buck, learning about their genetics and what makes them tick in general.”

There are a lot of maintenance jobs like fixing fences and the upkeep of our arena footing. A lot of our days are also put into working and handling our young stock and preparing them for events. We do spend a lot of time just being out in the paddock with the stock, being present, watching them interact with each other and learning each bulls’ different characteristics. You never have the same two same days.”

Caitlin dove into the breeding aspect of rodeo bulls when she met her husband Mick Ford, previously a competitive bull rider, Mick has been in the breeding side of things since 2006. The pair began their journey of breeding of bucking bulls together full time in 2013 under their business, CMF Cattle Co. Now, with eight competitive bulls and over 25 cows and calves the duo certainly have their work cut out for them.

“It is a full-time job, there are no days off or holidays and you have to be ready to deal with any situation 24 hours a day. We are constantly working to meet each individual bulls’ needs mentally, physically and nutritionally.”

“Our days are filled with general feeding chores, checking water supplies, and checking each individual beast for injury or illness,” said Caitlin. “Many of these days are also meeting our stocks needs 6

Caitlin describes the lifestyle as a whole lot of work and a whole lot more love.

So, what makes a bull buck? “You can’t make a bull buck, they either want to or they don’t, and we respect that in our young stock. Genetics plays a big role in how a bull will perform when asked. We bring our young bulls in around 12 months old and start to dry work them through the yards, in and out of the arena, having them used to being touched and handled in the chute. We have to make sure they are in the right headspace to

handle having put the ‘dummy’ on their backs.” The dummy itself is a small steel box with a boot latch inside that releases at the click of a button, usually no heavier than 10 kilos.

“The dummy is attached to the flank rope that encourages the bull to kick. Once the bull does the desired manoeuvre we click the dummy off straight away, the bull learns that when he bucks a certain way, the dummy will release. This prepares the bull physically and mentally until they are ready for their first rider, it helps build on their confidence while performing. It really comes down to whether the bull wants to or not, if a bull doesn’t want to do something, believe me, we cannot make them. The relationship we build with these bulls through this process is really incredible. A big part of our program is building on their trust to ensure they are in the best possible headspace to perform when asked. We want our stock to look to us for guidance and direction.” It’s evident through every word that this is a lifestyle Caitlin proudly lives and breathes.

Courtesy is getting harder Do you remember the days when you rang someone, left a message if they weren’t there, and more often than not you’d hear back from them within a matter of hours or even minutes? Whatever happened to those days? Most of my similar experiences today see me waiting for days and even weeks for people to return calls, emails etc. It’s true! Common courtesy on this front and so many others seems to be a thing of the past for many people. Yes, I know this is the modern way we do things and I know that technology plays an enormous part in how we do business and personal things in this modern age. Speaking for myself, I really don’t enjoy it, I do however, understand why it happens. Personally, in both my private and business dealings I get hundreds of phone calls, emails etc. each week. Any that I believe deserve or expect an answer or reply, I try to respond to in a short space of time, and I think I’m pretty good at it. That said, there are still many that I don’t reply to for one reason or another. Having a phone in my hand 24/7 or sitting at a keyboard for hours on end is not my desired way of living. And what about Facebook you ask? I don’t have it, don’t want it, and don’t think it’s something that will enhance my life.

It was almost culture shock for us as we flew into Canada. We’d spent so much time in the desert areas, including L.A., Vegas and Arizona, flying over sparse red dirt was the norm to see outside the plane window. Looking out to green and gold fields it almost felt like home. Funnily enough we were told that Canadian farmers despise the rain (because they get so much of it, it usually means their crops will go under.) Almost a perfect contrast line of city to country.

Courtesy is the topic we’re talking about here, and returning messages both by phone or computer is only part of it. Courtesy also extends to the way we communicate with people, talk to people, help people, treat people, care about people and so on. There is a saying that goes something along the lines of “people won’t remember what you said to them, or what you did to them, but

they will remember the way you made them feel.” Showing courtesy in all its forms will make people “feel” better, if you’re on the receiving end of courtesy, you’ll feel better too. It makes very good sense to show courtesy in all our dealings, even when we come under criticism or fire. If more people showed more courtesy to more people in more situations, our world would be a better place for sure. Think about the “nice” people in your life, they’re probably people who among their characteristics, are always courteous. That’s one of the things that make them “nice” in your thinking. I decided quite a few years back that in future, and as customer, I was always going to try to do business with those who I considered “nice” people. That extends to the shops I buy from, the tradesmen I use, the people whose services I use and so on. I reasoned that when things go wrong, this type of person is more likely to want to help you and want to put things right, and even if the problem is my fault, a “nice” person will often do the unexpected. From the other side too, when things do go horribly wrong, I find that by being honest, courteous, polite and fair when complaining will often come up with a great result for both parties. Here in Orange, wherever we may think we sit on the courtesy ladder, let’s take the way we show and practice courtesy to a higher level. Do that and everyone will benefit in all manner of ways. Like anything worthwhile in life, it takes effort, being more courteous will take effort but will also bring wonderful rewards as well.

Get Back on your Bike — MELISE COLEMAN —

Have you and your bike taken a rest over the winter period? The call from local cycling enthusiasts is a loud one, simply ‘Get back on your Bike!’

Need a little more motivation to get out and about? Orange Bicycle Users Group or ‘Orange BUGs’ are relaunching their regular Sunday social rides for cyclist of all abilities. On Sunday August 23, from 2pm cyclists are welcome to take their bike to Gosling Creek (Forest Road Carpark) for a free maintenance check and to learn about the Orange ‘BUG’ ride program for 2020/2021. Orange Bugs is a social and recreational cycling group. The group is part of an affiliated state-wide network of cycling groups supported by Bicycle NSW.

Local BUGs member Sue Bonar said, “The idea of the new regular program of social rides is for those who want to get back on the bike, meet some new people and start riding around Orange during Spring. It’s not easy to go from zero to full lycra,” Sue smiled, “So Orange BUGS will be there to bridge that gap.” BUG Vice President, Peter Rodgers mentioned he is keen to make cycling more accessible to all levels of riders and also for our welcomed visitors. “During COVID, we noticed how many people were out on their bikes, especially families, so we want to

encourage local riding to continue and grow,” said Peter. “Our COVID trained BUG Leaders will run free themed rides every Sunday and will range from beginners to those wanting more effort or advancement. The story of Emus Rugby Club’s first 50 years now in print — JONATHAN ROE —

The history of the Orange Emus Rugby Club’s first 50 years has been documented in a new book from former players Ed Henry and Rodney Keevil. While not claiming to be a comprehensive history of the club’s development from 1947 to 1997, the book offers highlights of the player’s, supporter’s and club administrator’s role in building a unique and prosperous country rugby club with facilities the envy of regional Australia. “It is an exciting story of how a continuous group of amateur sporting-people and their supporters started from nothing and became the most successful rugby union club in the Central West,” said former player and co-author Ed Henry.

The book, he said, covers the formation of the club, the development of Endeavour Park, the licensed premises and home of Emus, a history of premiership wins and stories about some the individuals who made this happen. The idea was first floated at the Orange Emus’ 50th anniversary celebrations, but it took Ed and his co-author Rodney ‘Slippery’ Keevil to turn that talk into action. “At the reunion in 1997 there was a lot of talk about we should write a book, but no one said who was going to do it!” said Ed. “So, 22 years later and we’ve now written that

book! My co-author Rodney Keevil, he had a repository of a lot of info from photographs to press releases and in the construction of the book we probably touched base with about 30 different people who also had little snippets of information. “But a lot of the people that formed the club they are not with us anymore and so getting information on that late 40’s - 50’s period we had to do a fair bit of research through the CWD and other reports — it was a bit of a challenge getting it together.” The book “The story of Orange Emus 1947-

1997” will be launched at Emus clubhouse on Friday, 28th August at 3 pm. Club members who wish to attend the book launch can book a seat by contacting Slippery Keevil at slipsans@hotmail.com. “The Covid Restrictions have to be adhered to so there are limits on numbers. It will be a seated event down and comply with the conditions of a public gathering,” said Ed. Following the launch the book will be available for sale (cost $40) at the clubhouse or online at www.emusrugby.com.au. All proceeds go to the club.

COMMEMORATING THE END OF WWII AND OUR VIETNAM VETERANS On Saturday we commemorated 75 years since Victory in the Pacific which brought an end to World War II, the conflict that claimed 39,000 Australian lives. It was to change our nation forever. At places like Tobruk, Milne Bay, Kokoda and Coral Sea, Australians helped to turn the tide of the war. On Tuesday, we also paused to remember those who served and sacrificed for Australia during the Vietnam War. Between 1962 and 1975 almost 60,000 served in Vietnam and more than 500 Australian lives were lost.

stablished here in Orange in 2003 as a regional service provider offering employment and vocation training to Aboriginal people, Birrang has expanded over the years and now runs a diverse range of community development projects across the state including the highly successful learner driver program. Birrang is now also a fully accredited National Disability Insurance Service (NDIS) provider offering support coordination, plan management and services to more than 300 clients in Orange and towns as far away as Bourke and West Wyalong. “Birrang, as far as I know, is only one of a few in Orange that offer all three of these service under the one roof,” said Harley. “Usually you have a support coordinator sitting in an office somewhere and then a plan manger somewhere else. Here we have support coordination that sits out in the back room with me, then we’ve got our plan management and finances

next door and we then our support and social service guys… So here we are a one-stop shop!” Depending on which support you require, Birrang can provide it or facilitate another provider.

Talk about girl power, Kinross Wolaroi Year 11 student, Bella Scammell is on absolute fire after recently winning the 15-16-year category at the World Rowing Virtual Indoor Sprints 2020.

Organised by Concept 2 and run through World Rowing. This is a worldwide event with more than 7700 individuals from 88 countries participating in the competition, with over 500 competitors in Bella’s particular category.

It wasn’t enough to take it out once, this is the second consecutive year that Bella has won the award, which is a remarkable achievement.

Bella’s time was an incredible 3m 22s and her time beat out the second-place getter by more than 10 seconds, with second place coming in at 3m 33s. It was just last week Bella received her medal and certificate.

The event was held back in March, with participants having the option to race at a club, gym, school or home. Participants raced 1000m on a Concept2 Indoor Rower (Model A-E rowers only), having to then submit their results electronically.

She Sat by The Sea ‑ By Maddie Taberner (aged 16) ‑ Scotland, 1890 She was alone. Her black dress fluttered in the bitter wind. Decaying leaves lined the cracked path, the smell of rain surrounded her. The stones were lined in rows before her, most toppled, others worn, broken and crumbling at the edges. Trees dotted the area, they hung in misery, their roots trailed across the yard. For a moment she thought she heard her whisper among the swaying trees, but instead the stillness returned in the form of fog, it devoured her and reeled among the head stones, suffocating them. It was through the prevailing silence that her fate was identified. Loneliness. Her eyes were drawn back to the single stone before her. ‘Nadia’ She crouched before it, her dark dress pooled at her knees. She studied the carved inscription, brushing the edge of the freshly cut stone. Her throat tightened as she struggled, tears began trailing down her cold cheeks. She quickly dried her face, dampening her black glove. But she couldn’t conceal her pain. Her breaths became short, and a great sob tore through her chest, ‘I can’t live without you’ she buried her face deep within her palms as she choked on her sobs. The clacking of horse hooves woke her from her nightmare, still breathing heavily she glanced past the pines, her eyes meeting with 22

the glowering town. Her father neatly dressed, stood on the corner, a dim streetlight flickered above him as his eyes anxiously bounced from his golden pocket watch, to the carriage and to the cemetery. The sun had long sunken behind the hill now, blackness surrounded her, hiding everything. She rose and quietly followed the old path to the ancient gate; the black sky began showering the earth with a white powder. Snowflakes melted as they kissed her warm skin. She softly latched the wooden gate; her gaze met the carved stones once more. Nothing but a sea of old souls stared back at her from the night, all who had witnessed her tears of sorrow. How beautiful it must be she thought, to rest in the soft brown earth, to have no yesterday and no tomorrow. Although she felt welcome, she longed to belong to the family of souls who lived there, with Nadia. A weary smile loosened her lips as fresh hot tears streamed down her cheeks, hinting to Nadia that she would return. Snow delicately fell as she turned and disappeared into the cold night. She untied the worn string and slipped off her leather slippers, the sound of snow could be heard as it delicately fell outside. Through the dark and quiet cottage, her silk dress brushed against the wooden staircase. The candle was already burning when she entered her room. She was drawn to it. Her reflection.

She stopped, gazing deep into her own eyes; the wooden frame curled around the dusty mirror. Deafening silence filled the space as she paused. ‘Who am I?’ Her golden hair was swept to the side, loosely pinned into a bun at her neck. One by one she searched her hair for the bronze pins and set them on her dresser. Her small notebook lay on the chair, she retrieved her quill, dipped it in ink and began. Twenty-one days she wrote.

Her cheeks felt hot, as if burning coal had dusted her face, her eyes seemed glassy for a moment. ‘It will get better’ her mother’s kind words didn’t even begin to enter her mind. The pain was buried deep inside her, it was flowing through her blood, it occupied every moment of her churning mind, things were not getting better, the more days that crawled by the worse it became. She politely suppressed a fake grin ‘yes’ her voice was weak and quiet. She clutched the book and secured her leather satchel over her bony shoulder. She slipped out the door and fell into the dark world. She sat by the sea. In their place. Reading. Remembering. The book granted her access

to a part of her imagination that was once a reality, laying in a field of flowers on a warm day, collecting little treasures they found in the forest, playing in empty churches, reading old books together or dancing bare foot in the woods. She feared she would fail to remember. So, she made sure she read it day after day, Jim Rohn’s story became stronger each time. His words always inspired her “Reading is essential for those who seek to rise above the ordinary.” She did rise above the ordinary, they both did. The lilac stalks swayed around her as she sat on the cliff observing the wretched sea. ‘The lilac grove above the sea will always be a safe place to leave your heart’ Nadia once said. Her words echoed through her head. She rose the wind continued to entwine its soft fingers through her long hair, ashen clouds filled the dreary space as the sky ached to rain. Her thin dress struggled to shield her from the increasing gusts of wind and her lips were becoming a deep blue as she clenched her jaw. Freezing, she wrapped her bony arms around her thin waste as her weary eyes met with the seas shore. She stepped out of her leather slippers, reached for the book and began to walk. Her figure was nothing but a shadow, the wind tempted to whisk her way in one breath, her skin was a deathly pale and to brush her face would be equivalent to stroking an ice lake. Close to the ocean; the water spat on her face causing her to shiver.

She held the book close to her chest and without hesitation she began moving towards the water, it reached her ankles then began to swell to her knees, she closed her eyes moving further into the depth, she plunged herself into the waves. She gave in to the darkness and let the water take her away. The sound of thrashing waves could be heard above her, but silence grew stronger as she sunk further into the blue. Her heartache faded into numbness as her pulse weakened.

She still felt lost in his forest green eyes, she still felt his warm hand clutch her jaw and she remembered the strength in his arms as he lifted her. She still saw his paper white skin and his copper penny coloured hair; it flopped over his forehead and framed his face. Every time she closed her eyes his auburn freckles and long eyelashes could be seen.

Some weeks later… She sat by the sea. Different. Maybe an angel rescued her all those weeks ago? Something or someone wanted her here. Maybe the sea longed to eat her book? But His face still entered her mind, the angel she named him. She sighed and casted her eyes upon the world before her, golden light spilled upon the fields and across the hills, it penetrated the deepest forests and scaled the highest of peaks. ‘Yours’ the voice came from behind her, she turned, her mop of unruly curls bobbed. It was him. His sharp face seemed to devour her heart as warmth suddenly flushed to her cheeks. It was her book, Nadia’s book. Its pages had a yellow – brown tinge, and although it was dry the middle layers looked damp. He treated it like treasure, she paused unsure of how to respond. ‘Names Jaimie’ he revealed. She hesitated. ‘Isler’ she awkwardly grinned back. He moved closer placing the book in her lap. He studied her face before crouching in the grass opposite her, his eyes didn’t break contact with hers once. His confidence made her nervous, ‘read it would you’ he grinned. She paused and glanced down at Nadia’s book. Her book. She turned the cover, cleared her throat and began.

A historical classic on the market — JONATHAN ROE —

It’s a historic, feature-laden house on nearly half an acre opposite Cook Park; this new Clinton Street offering from Peter Fisher Real Estate is sure to attract plenty of attention. Built in the early 1900s, the house at 40 Clinton Street would have been a majestic home in its day. With four large bedrooms, a wide well-lit hallway, leadlight bay windows, decorative fireplaces and 11-foot pressed metal ceilings, the property shows signs of no expense being spared during its construction. “You can see it would have been an expensive house and one of the very best houses in the street in its day,” said selling agent Michael Wright. The property has been stripped of all later alterations, carpet and fixtures in order to show interested buyers the potential for restoration or renovation. “It is up really to your imagination,” said Michael. “You can see that despite the age of the house it is still a pretty solid old girl. It is on a bluestone base and the way it is presented you can see it bones and all, you can see exactly what it is. “And one of the things that impresses me about the house, now that we have it stripped out, is the amount of natural light that comes through even as it is and given you’ve got the opportunity to do an extension you have ample opportunity to really pick up that northern and Eastern light.”

Even without considering the massive amount of land on the block the property has ample room for expansion. The current owners even had plans to install a second level under the current roofline. “I have been up in the roof and in the old terms I’d guess it’s approximately ten foot to the centre roof line, so again there is ample opportunity to open up a second story in this home,” said Michael. “The owner had some plans drawn up for what they wanted to do and we could possibly share those with interested parties, or if they know a good architect, feel free to bring them along and have a look through and I’m more than happy to answer any questions that they might have.” One of the more notable features on entering the home are the four lion statues that adorn the entry; the history of which, Michael would love to know. “Locals do affectionately know it as ‘the Lion House.’ Now, what the story is behind the lions, I’m not sure but, it would be interesting if any of your readers knew. It would be great to be able to pass that on with the history of the house.”

But, of course, it is the size of the land that truly makes this property exceptional, especially given its prime location and the option to subdivide. The current owner has received approval to split the block in two, which would leave the house on 926 square metres, and a rear block of 863 square metres. “There is 1789 square metres! It is a size of land you don’t see in the newer blocks, let alone here across from Cook Park. Anyone who quite literally wanted to have a tennis court and a pool and still have a good size yard — this has ample opportunity,” said Michael “You may have parents you want to set up a home for or you might want to use the whole backyard yourself. The possibilities are whatever you want them to be, which is pretty unusual for a prime position in the middle of town.” The market for CBD properties has been strong, said Michael, who expects this unusual offering to attract a lot of interest from buyers. “It is hard to buy a house with character and that is what you’ve got here… And straight opposite Cook Park, there are not too many other better addresses in town.”

The August working bee for members of the Heritage Rose Group of the Friends of the Orange Botanic Garden was a very productive day. Under blue skies eight members of the group spent last Monday planting twelve new heritage roses on the eastern side of the Chapel. These roses have been donated by members and will be labelled at a later date. They will not only be an addition to the existing garden but will provide a very colourful display in this area next summer.

Pruning of the roses was completed last Monday giving volunteers the opportunity to take cuttings from several heritage roses. These cuttings will be used to propagate roses for the garden to be used in the future. Now restrictions have been lifted the group will meet at the heritage rose garden in the Botanic Garden at 9.30am on the first Monday of each month. Anyone interested in joining the group is asked to call 0427892486 for details.

Bowen School

Bowen Public School staff are continuing to provide quality teaching and learning experiences for our students during these trying COVID times. We continue to explicitly teach and target individual needs and have recently added the 4E program to enrich, extend, engage and enjoy. This allows students to be involved in STEM, robotics, claymation, music, street art, dance, photography, literacy, numeracy and craft. Students make their own choices of programs ensuring they are invested in the outcomes and is a fantastic way for our students to be involved in and challenged by excursion type activities that are not possible at present. In addition, Bowen is implementing the progressive world leading Second Step Social and Emotional Literacy Program. Second Step develops students social and emotional competency; developing life-long learners to be exceptional citizens beyond their school years. The whole school staff have been training extensively, and look forward to the launch of the program within our school next week. Add in our recent cross-country carnival, upcoming athletics carnival and Book Week parade; many terrific things continue to occur here at Bowen.

Cancellation of Badge Day for ORANGE Legacy For almost a century, Legacy has kept the promise to thousands of veterans’ families - helping provide financial and social support for those in their care during times of hardship and grief. In the past, the Orange and Central West community has had the opportunity to support their local Legacy Club for commemorative events and fundraising activities. Orange Legacy, along with 44 other Clubs around Australia and 1 in London, is working to navigate a very different Legacy Week to years gone by. Although our work has never been more vital – providing support and services for some of the most vulnerable in the community – these times have meant that some Clubs, including Orange Legacy, have had to make difficult decisions. Due to state and national government restrictions, and the safety and health of volunteers and beneficiaries being of paramount importance, Orange Legacy has decided to cancel their face-to-face Badge Day fundraising initiatives. Club President, James Linton said “despite the fact that there will be no face to face sale of merchandise this year Orange Legacy will continue to provide the same vital help and assistance to its beneficiaries ”.

COMMEMORATIVE SERVICE FOR VIETNAM VETERANS’ DAY — MELISE COLEMAN — In recognition of Vietnam Veterans’ Day, local dignitaries and community members gathered at the Orange Cenotaph for a commemorative service. Vietnam Veterans Day is commemorated on 18 August every year. On that day, 108 Australian and New Zealand soldiers fought over 2,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops not far from the small village of Long Tan.

A Prayer for our City

Our Heavenly Father, We pray for our leaders here in Orange and our State and Federal governments. Grant them wisdom and energy as they seek to guard the health of our city and nation in this constantly changing crisis. We know that there are many vulnerable people in our community, and this pandemic is only making life harder. We pray especially for the elderly, the sick, those who live alone and those who struggle with poor mental health. Lord God comfort them, provide for them; for good health care, good friends and their daily needs. We thank you for the good gift of health care. We thank you for the health system in this country, and especially in our community. Give our health care workers energy and strength for their task. We ask that effective treatments may be found soon, and that some of the vaccines may protect and preserve life. We pray that you would restrict the spread of Coronavirus in Orange, in our nation and in those countries suffering the most in our world. But most of all we pray for the life that you offer us through the death and resurrection of Jesus. In these anxious times, we pray that many people in our city of Orange would hear and accept the offer of eternal life that you make to anyone who puts their trust in Your son, Jesus Christ, his death in their place. Show mercy our Heavenly Father so that many would know you.

Tammy had gone outside, noticed my bag and brought it in. As a regular customer, she said, “I knew it had to be yours.” I could not express my relief and appreciation. THUMBS UP to Barry Potter for his say in Newswatch, so true about Orange. We have lost so much, the big high fence out the front of the Botanical Garden come down and they were replaced with horse rails not good for our special garden. Yes, when the caravan people have a convention they bypass Orange and go elsewhere. We have a good showground but we lost the big grandstand, the ring, horse stables, also the horse racing, take a look at Bathurst then Orange. To bring people to Orange we need a large tourist fun park at Lake Canobolas with caravans, cabins and camping with games, swings, rides also a water slide and a movie screen with a stage and boat rides on the lake with fishing. Also an animal and bird park and also carry chairs at Mount Canobolas up and down the Pinnacle, this could make things better for Orange. Well done Barry, excellent.

They have come together to not only support my children through this difficult time but have shown some amazing culinary skill by providing our family with home delivered meals for the last two weeks. I can’t say enough about this school, the best in Orange. Thank you so much everyone and pizza on me when I’m back on my feet. A VERY BIG THUMBS DOWN to the driver of the high powered/noisy car that spun 360 degrees on the Burrendong Way/ Northern Distributor Roundabout (in the rain) at 6pm on Sunday 9 August. When you finally came out of your spin, you went back the opposite way 180 degrees and then roared off along the distributor, misfiring and sliding from side to side, endangering the motorists coming into the roundabout. It may have given you a thrill but not to others. How about you drive to the conditions and think of other drivers? THUMBS UP to the guy who helped me, last Wednesday (5/8), to cross at the Byng Street/ Anson Street roundabout. My balance is not so good, my glasses were fogging up because of the face mask I was wearing and the roundabout area was busy. Many thanks sir.
