Canobolas High School was a sea of red last week, as the school participated in Ronald McDonald House’s recent fundraising event. Staff and students were asked to bring along a gold coin donation for the cause. The ‘Wear Red Day’ was an initiative of the Principal of Denison College, Ken Barwick who launched the event in schools three years ago. It was held throughout the region and this year with the RHM team thrilled to announce the event has tripled in size, as 60 schools and businesses in the region registering. Canobolas High School SRC Coordinator, Lalitha Plumb said, “We normally participate in RMH fundraisers every year, though this year when we got the call from Ronald McDonald House, with everything that is going on. Especially with COVID, they’ve needed a lot extra support with everything that’s happening, and we were only too happy to get involved, we thought we would really dig deep and give a helping hand.

many businesses and schools are involved in wear Red Day each year, and how it continues to grow far beyond our expectations. To the businesses, schools, families and individuals who participated and made this year’s event and even greater success. Thank you. Thank you from us here at RMHC Orange and from the families who stay with us. To date RMH Orange has provided free accommodation and other support services for 733 families for a total of 5817 nights. More than half those accommodation nights have been for families who have come to Orange as their child or adolescent is experiencing a mental health crisis requiring urgent treatment in the Child and Adolescent Mental Health (CAMS) unit in Orange Hospital. These families often need to stay for several weeks or even months during treatment and being close to their child in hospital helps ease the burden on families.” All funds raised through the Wear Red Day initiative will remain in Orange to directly support families who travel to Orange from an area that takes in 86 per cent of the state, or five health districts. Rebecca added, “In the particularly difficult year for all, it has been so heart-warming to see the success of this event and for the amazing generosity of our community.” Well done Canobolas High!

A LOVE FOR ALL THINGS ORANGE When I moved to Orange two and a half years ago, I was surprised to find a prevailing ‘half glass full’ attitude from many people here.

complex, great pubs and restaurants, beautiful parks and playgrounds, and neighbouring villages and towns a short drive away.

I know there is a natural human tendency to think the grass is greener elsewhere, but I really was shocked that so many people don’t seem to appreciate what they have right here on their doorstep.

Another opinion that perplexes me, is that of people who think Orange desperately needs a ‘tourist attraction’ of some sort all the while dismissing anything food and wine related. It may not be a theme park, but Orange’s vineyards, cafes and restaurants are certainly a major drawcard for the city. It brought me as a tourist to Orange well before living here and having worked at a local cellar door, I’ve seen the thousands of people who travel Orange due to its reputation as a wine region.

I’ve heard people repeatedly complain that shopping is no good in Orange and that Bathurst and Dubbo have much more to offer — something people I know in Dubbo find amusing to hear. And after spending a decade living in a small outback town where the nearest place to buy a pair of shoes or a new shirt for work was four hours away and takeaway food delivery was unknown I have little time for this complaint.

New Zealand “Before we took our trip to New Zealand, I was encouraged to ‘really’ travel the South Island. It wasn’t until we were in our hire Kombi, pedal to the medal and taking in all of the sights from the first leg of our trip, from Christchurch to Franz Joseph Fox Glacier, that I understood what they were taking about. It really wasn’t hard to be in awe of the landscapes surrounding you. Because the Kombi took a little more than a lot to get going and keep going (especially during the rolling hills and conditions not in our favour) I had to master the photograph on the go. Every now and again we’d get a break in the traffic and we were treated to views like this!

People lament the number of empty shopfronts in the main street and sure, that is a problem, but not one unique to Orange. High Streets the world over have seen long-standing businesses collapse as changing buyer habits flip the retail industry on its head. But in my time working here at OC Life, I have also spoken with numerous businesses that have adapted and are growing and thriving despite this and even during the past years of drought. It is a transition period and things in the future will look different, but I don’t see the changing High Street in the same ‘doom and gloom’ sense that others seem to. “There’s nothing to do here,” people complain, which again I find ridiculous as a newcomer looking around a city with a large theatre, cinema

Sure, growing the local tourism industry (post pandemic) would be great for the city, and well worth planning for, but in the past two years alone, we have seen the opening of the Byng Street Hotel, the Quest Apartments as well as the approval for a new 100-room hotel in Summer Street — that certainly doesn’t sound like a town that is struggling to attract visitors. “But Orange is stagnating” I hear people say — well. I just don’t see it. My wife and I chose to relocate our family to Orange as we saw a beautiful, vibrant growing regional city, with great schools and great facilities — and that opinion hasn’t changed since moving here. And judging by the ever-expanding housing estates, limited rental availability and rising house prices we are not the only ones who think Orange has something going for it.

Teaching old and young dogs new tricks — JONATHAN ROE —

“All dogs are teachable at any age,” says Laurie Montague, chief instructor of the Orange and District Kennel Club Obedience School. “You hear people saying that old dogs can’t learn new trick— it’s is a myth, it’s not true. You can teach a dog at any age.” Every Sunday, Laurie and his fellow obedience school instructors offer very affordable obedience instruction for local dog owners at the Waratahs Sports Club. "The focus of the obedience school is on basic obedience," said Laurie, who is keen to see more dog owners take advantage of what they offer to better train their animals. “We recently changed the dog school to just basic obedience, we used to have competitions et cetera but that’s all fallen off,” he said. “So now , we teach basic obedience with the focus on having fun. It is more designed to help the community get better socialised dogs and teach them basic obedience, so they don’t have their dogs causing problems in the community.” Laurie himself joined the club 30 years ago after making a tree change to Orange and getting a young Border Collie. “Effectively I was a city boy and made the

country change, we all had our hearts set on getting a working dog, not realising how much work a working dog would be! So this is what brought me to the dog school 30 years ago,” he said. Laurie actually went on to compete with that Border Collie, and another dog he adopted, and had success with both at competitions in Sydney. Now, he is passionate about passing on his knowledge to others. “If you have a dog and you feel that it needs to be educated a little bit, bring it along to obedience. It is social and it is very inexpensive,” he said “In your first couple of weeks you will be taught basic obedience: how to walk with your dog, so it doesn’t pull you around; and how to get your dog to sit, stay and come when called.

“Basic obedience gives you control of the dog so you can have confidence that it will do what it is told.”

“We ask people to get here 15 minutes early, so they can pay their fees and get their dog settled. If you haven’t been before and you are not experienced, it is a sensible thing to do not to get too close to the other dogs and your dog must stay on the lead at all times.”

The new SPAR Express on Moulder Street, formerly the convenience store known as Jack’s Corner Store, has been undergoing a transition since it was purchased by brother’s Mani and Manjit Singh and family. “We bought this one two years back it was a Jack’s Corner Store and since we’ve tried hard to change the layout, we’ve put more products in, we did a renovation,

Grants assist local businesses beyond the ‘COVID curve’ Fitness Perfection is one of several local businesses that have been successful in receiving a grant through Newcrest’s Business Beyond the Curve Program – a program designed to provide assistance to local small businesses that have been financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. NSW coronavirus restrictions led to a 10-week shutdown in operations for Fitness Perfection, which significantly impacted the business. Fitness Perfection Owner, Nickolas Gray said the gym was successful in receiving a Business Beyond the Curve recovery grant which was used towards growing the business through upgrading facilities, installing energy efficient lighting and revamping social marketing and web presentations. “It’s been fantastic the support Newcrest is giving through this program. It’s big business helping small business through tough times,” Nickolas said.

Newcrest’s Business Beyond the Curve Program is an initiative of the Newcrest Community Support Fund and will provide a $500,000 injection into the local business communities within Orange, Blayney and Cabonne Local Government Areas. Cadia General Manager, Aaron Brannigan said the program has awarded 70 grants to date, which include financial assistance for gyms, cafes, restaurants, vineyards, beauty salons, travel agents, retail, hotels, motels, allied health and a range of other local businesses. “COVID-19 has had a significant economic impact on our community and the Business Beyond the Curve program is not only assisting local businesses with current financial impacts but helping them become more sustainable and resilient in the longer term,” Aaron said.

ORANGE EX-SERVICES’ CLUB HONOURS ONE OF THEIR OWN

ong serving Orange Ex-Services’ Club staff member Julie Archer has been honoured for her decades of service to the club and now joins the revered ranks of Life Member. The announcement and presentation took place last Wednesday night (29 July, 2020) at the Club’s Annual General Meeting. Julie is now only the 24th person in the club’s history to have received the highly regarded honour of being been named Life Member, and is only one of ten living Life Members. As a member, Julie Archer has been associated with the Club since 1977 and commenced her employment in 1985. In her time, Julie has worked under a number of CEO’s including Robert (Bob) Cullen, Dominic Connaughton, Cameron Provost, Graham Gentles (whilst he was acting in the CEO position) and the current CEO, Daniel Perkiss, providing invaluable support to those responsible for guiding the operations of the Club. For the first five years of her employment,

Julie was an all-rounder, working across the Administration and in various other roles. Then in 1990, Julie commenced her role as Executive Secretary and since then has worked under four Presidents of the Orange Ex-Services’ Club including Lieutenant Colonel Terry Irwin, Russell Jones, Peter Single and the current President, Graham Gentles. To say Julie has been both an exceptional member and staff member, would not be doing justice to the level of commitment she has shown, since 1977. She is known for going above and beyond every Anzac Day, assisting Veterans throughout the day at the ceremony, march and back at the Club for the luncheons. Julie is a valued member of the glee club and readily available to every member and every sporting club that is associated with Orange ExServices’ Club. Julie has recalled on a number of occasions, how much the club has grown to the thriving entity it is today, from the beginnings where men and women were segmented in to different areas

Until then the team are preparing the Centre with signage and hand sanitiser and volunteers have undertaken training for COVID 19 to keep both volunteers and riders safe. The RDA Orange team have also been busy with general maintenance within the centre, everything from painting, renovating, ongoing horse care, fencingthe list goes on! The Australians held out in Tobruk for eight months earning the derisive name from a frustrated Rommel “Rats of Tobruk.” For weeks they went without a bath or change of clothes. They grabbed sleep during daylight hours in dugouts. They were beset by flies, fleas and dust they were under constant bombardment and mates were killed beside them—but still they held on.

In Tobruk they sustained almost 4000 casualties. When the 2nd 13th Battalion broke through Rommel’s defences at El Alamein, Rommel finally withdrew.

THERE HAS BEEN MUCH TALK LATELY ABOUT THE MENTAL HEALTH OF PEOPLE COPING WITH ENFORCED LOCKDOWN DURING THE PRESENT PANDEMIC. While I am not downplaying the problems of those who have lost jobs and incomes during this period, I feel we must take comfort in the fact that we are mostly being looked after. We have been helped financially and, apart from the problem of the virus, we are not facing the horrors of war as we have done several times in the 20th Century. Quite a few years ago when I was living in a small country town in the Central West, I was researching an article that I wanted to write about people who had grown up in the town, gone away and returned after some years. I thought to discover what changes they noticed and how the town had progressed. But I found myself gathering material on an entirely different subject. One group who had left the town and returned after some years were the young men who had enlisted to fight for their country in the Second World War.

This was nowhere near the end.

possibly never had quite enough to eat. They were ready for anything! They landed in North Africa where they were required to fight an enemy they didn’t know in a country they had never seen. They were all volunteers and not compelled to go overseas but as they told me “It never occurred to us not to go. It was just the thing to do.” As we talked they were still very reluctant to describe the conditions in North Africa, but I noticed that their chairs had gradually moved nearer to me and when I suggested that we meet again they agreed. The next time it was a different story. Desert training began in Palestine. The Italian dictator, Mussolini’s plan was to dominate North Africa and its rich resources. The Australians confronted the enemy and went to war near Bardia.

I asked eight of these men, now the backbone of the community, to meet me in a room at the local RSL club. They were willing to come but made it clear to me that they would not talk about the war -or if they did, it was only to give me their names and serial numbers. I agreed and when I arrived at our meeting place, I found them seated on chairs as far away from me and my tape recorder as possible.

They told of the excitement and anticipation they felt at the thought of leaving for far away places at the age of eighteen! These were the young people who had grown up in the Great Depression, who had never known luxury and had

The Australians were sent home to confront invasion. They were given a short leave to train for jungle fighting. It was here that my group became restive. “By this time we knew what war was like,” they told me. “We had to fight again against a new enemy and in entirely different conditions.” In fact they didn’t want to go but that was not an option. They fought in steaming jungles and on mountain ridges that could scarcely be climbed. But they mastered jungle warfare and by the end of 1942 the Japanese were brought to a standstill. The Australians pushed them back over the Owen Stanley Range to the coast. Again there were huge casualties, not only from hand -tohand fighting but from tropical diseases. One of the group described the dreadful “scrub typhus” when he was unconscious for 23 days and his weight dropped to 47 kilos; there were skin diseases and malaria and the continual danger of jungle warfare. The fighting continued and the price was high. Five and a half thousand Australians were killed in Papua New Guinea. Finally on August 6th the Japanese surrendered. The war was finally over. The men I had talked to returned to their peaceful little town to take up civilian life again. There was little counselling to help them in those days.

“You were too busy to worry about yourself. We knew there’d be casualties and just hoped it wouldn’t be you,” the men told me. Early in 1941, General Rommel and the celebrated Afrika Corps confronted Australia’s 9th Division and pushed them back to Tobruk where they fought with their backs to the sea.

COVID-19 UPDATE - PUBLIC INFO VITAL! At the time of writing this on Tuesday, the Western NSW Local Health District has confirmed one new COVID-19 case in Orange, a CSU student who tested positive last week. I broke this news on my Facebook page late last week, because it became clear to me that there was information that was being held back and I believed it was important for the community to be updated. Having up to date information helps put rumours to rest, reduces the distribution of misinformation, and means that the community itself can increase its vigilance and protective measures, if it needs to. Even today, we still do not have any information on the ten close contacts of the positive case, who we understand have been placed into isolation. If we’re going to round up COVID-19, getting timely information to the public is vital. The NSW health authorities have a difficult job at the moment, but let’s not go back to them sitting on information and having to be pushed by the community to get it out there! If there are any more local cases we should know about, now is the time for the NSW health authorities to tell us. We’re all in this together!

$5,000 FOR NEW SEATING AT BLAYNEY HIGH SCHOOL Recently I dropped into Blayney High School to catch up with Principal, John Browett and to check out the new seating that was installed on the oval which a $5,000 grant under the Australian Government’s Local Schools Community Fund contributed to.

CSU UDPATE - AN INDEPENDENT EXTERNAL AUDIT NEEDS TO HAPPEN WITHOUT DELAY!

On 2 June, the Council of Charles Sturt University (CSU) passed a resolution, almost unanimously, in favour of an independent and external audit of the University’s financial performance and position. Amongst other things, the resolution confirmed that the audit would assess the impact of the University’s Sustainable Futures Program and would also include a pre, during and post COVID-19 data analysis of student enrolments. While I have been informed that CSU has accounting firms examining some aspects of its operations, it has to date not carried out an audit in the comprehensive terms agreed to by its own Council and has indicated that this audit may not be carried out at all. This is troubling and concerning. The resolution specifically stated that the audit would be undertaken to ensure community confidence and

government trust in the in the University’s finances and forward projections. The work carried out to date falls well short of the comprehensive resolution passed by its Council. CSU now has an obligation to ensure that this independent and external audit, as resolved by its own Council, is undertaken without further delay. Charles Sturt University is a vital institution to country Australia and it has no stronger supporter or better friend than me. For example, I recently fought tooth and nail for its new medical school. I want to see the University continue to go from strength to strength, but we can’t chart a course for its future without a full and accurate financial picture of where it is today. Students, staff, and the communities which CSU serves are entitled to a rigorous, open and transparent audit process, that clearly sets out the complete financial position of the University. It needs to get cracking on it!

“It is the feeling that you are flying in a certain way,” said 13-year-old kart racer, Edie McLandsborough. “Going fast and then braking really well into a corner or something… and sometimes it is even fun to crash, it is part of that learning experience.” Edie only took up the sport in the past year, but she has been around kart racing most of her life. Her father Greg and three brothers took up racing eight years ago, but it was only late last year that she caught the bug. “I didn’t get interested in trying it out when I was younger and just went, no, I’m not really into it, but last year I tried it out again and it is just so fun! “And it is not only the racing, it is the social aspect I really love. I’ve loved that ever since we started that’s why I always used to come along with everyone to all our meets, but it’s a great sport!” Kart Racing was something Edie’s father Greg McLandsborough had always been interested in trying himself and once his children grew older, he found it to be a great way to spend time as a family. “I’ve always just loved motorsport and racing a car, it is just something that’s never going to be feasible for me whereas this — I can’t think of a better way to spend time with my kids,” said Greg, who admits it is not the cheapest of sporting pursuits. “Without a doubt! But all sport costs money and I think probably 50 per cent of my costs are in the travel, the getting there, feeding the kids while we are on the road, which is the same for any sport,” he said.

“And the costs of the Karts is relatively inexpensive… a kart can cost you anywhere from about $2000 to a brand spanking new one, like that one there, with a new engine, new chassis — the whole lot — and it’s about $8000.” On the weekend, the Landsborough’s were among the 100 plus racers who descended on the Orange Kart Club Track for the Round 5 of the Southern Stars Series. The six-race series includes meets at Canberra, Wagga Wagga, Griffith, Grenfell, Orange and Dubbo. The country clubs have actually been growing said Greg, as newcomers join the sport and other competitors come back to grassroots racing. “When you look at it; we’re in the kart paddock for 48 hours most weekends for a two day race and we are on track for maybe an hour of that, so a lot of it is social,” said Greg. “And a lot of it is working on the karts! I’ve been trying to finish mine all week, because we broke it last weekend. I had to weld it back together this week and change the motor. So if you don’t like working on them, don’t do it!” Watching children as young as seven tear around the track might make some parents balk, but Greg insists it is a relatively safe sport. “I’ve seen one major incident in the eight years,” said Greg recalling a time he saw a child lost the brakes of his kart at the end of a straight.

... I can’t think of a better way to spend time with my kids... But the end result was a broken arm. “Most kids in eight years of playing rugby will break something and this was one kid out of everyone that we’ve raced that has ever had something broken,” he said.

We’re extending financial support

“The karts are actually a really interesting little device, because they are so low it is almost impossible to roll over and are built to absorb impact, so they are very safe.”

The Australian Government is extending JobKeeper until 28 March 2021 and the temporary Coronavirus Supplement for those on income support until 31 December 2020, after which income support will continue.

Dan Currin and son Charlie (10) joined the Orange Kart Club just over a year ago and haven’t looked back. “It is something I always wanted to do as a kid and Charlie was getting old enough so I thought we’d get him in to it,” said Dan. “And Charlie loves it.” Dan purchased a second-hand kart and got Charlie on the track racing for under $2000.

For JobKeeper and the temporary Coronavirus Supplement there will be some changes to payments and eligibility to support businesses and households who need it most.

He said learning how to adjust and tweak the performance of the kart was a bit of a steep learning curve at first, but there are always people willing to help. “There is plenty of support and help, you just have to learn to ask people, but I love it.”

Discover the Wetlands — MELISE COLEMAN —

Boasting the extensive corner of Ploughman’s Lane and Cargo Road, Ploughman’s Wetlands has become a popular destination for locals to enjoy daily exercise routines and to take a break to enjoy the surroundings. The nature preserve is one of four stormwater wetlands in the Ploughman’s Creek Catchment and has some exciting upgrades coming for the area in the near future, including a fully accessible board walk pathway around the Wetlands dam and upgraded signage. Ploughman’s Wetlands Care Group member Neil Jones explained, “The current plans are to complete the boardwalk, which council has allocated funding in this year’s budget to make it a fully (wheelchair) accessible pathway in a circular loop right around the main wetlands dam,” said Neil. “There is also a plan to increase the
