Mother Daughter duo and their

Creative Chaos

Jordan Garlick is one half of Chaos and Karma, one half of the brains, one half of the creativity, the other half you ask? That’s her Mother, Helen McBurnie. Together, the duo are a creative force to be reckoned with.

hat started out as a hobby, Jordan and Helen worked on creating sculptures and artworks which led soon enough to weekend market trips selling their work. A few years passed and the time came for the duo to step outside of their comfort zone and open their own shop. “It was something we both always wanted to do, have our own shop full of our art, sculptures and earrings,” said Jordan. Since opening the shop the girls’ creativity hasn’t wavered; just recently upskilling to create the latest trend, polymer clay earrings. “I have about 1000 pairs of earrings, so I thought I’ll make my own,” Jordan smiled. “I love making the clay earrings as they are all very unique and It’s not so repetitive. Mum actually got me the clay for Christmas last year and that’s what sparked the obsession! The clay took me a while to figure out, there are a lot of aspects to it like how long to cook it for, how thick to make it - don’t get me wrong there were a lot of fails - but that’s how I’m successful with them today.” In a handmade world Jordan and Helen’s handywork is making headway. of polymer clay, the jewellery range come in all sorts of colour and shape combinations. Jordan added, “Depending on how much detail is put onto each pair, it may take me around 15 minutes per earring. The other earrings, like the cowhide studs can be very fiddly and take a lot longer. "I use Instagram and Pinterest to get the creativity flowing, I tend to draw a lot of inspiration from there but what’s in my head at the time is usually the design I go with. "I’d like to think I’ve always been a very creative person though It’s definitely genetic, I get it from Mum. We both share the creativity though Mum is the brains behind it all, she is always looking for new ways to improve and we bounce ideas off each other all the time. There’s a lot of back and forth between Mum and I." Helen added, “We have a close relationship and we work really well together; we are very similar in most aspects and what one lacks the other picks up.” “My creativity comes in waves,” Jordan explained, “I think any creative person would know, you’ve got to be in the right mood. For me, I get most

of my work done here at work, but my art like my drawings is mostly at home, that’s where the music gets turned right up and I completely zone out. "Our old dining table is covered in creative chaos and somehow the art and earring stuff slowly creeps across to the other table every now and then, then it takes over the entire loungeroom,” Jordan laughed. “For me, the artwork is a longer process, most of the drawings are done in lead pencil and can take months, some works might even sit there and I’ll come back in six months’ time and continue on, though it is my favourite as its more personal. "Most people are quite surprised when they find out that it’s us that makes the jewellery and the artwork, I think they just assume because we are a shop we get them in from suppliers. Recently we have noticed a lot of visitors from out of town really get behind us to support a country area, it has been really positive which is great.” Anyone who appreciates the beauty of handmade objects will adore Jordan's and Helen's jewellery and artwork range. HOW ABOUT CHRISTMAS IN NOVEMBER Last year I floated an idea to stage what I called Christmas in November, it was all about staging all things Christmas in November in Orange. The reasoning behind it was to give our retailers an edge in the run up to Christmas and get Orange off to a flying start in the race to capture Christmas spending from people here and all around the region. With the right promotion, I could envisage people hitting the shops earlier than normal, and others coming from far and wide to see Christmas in Orange in November. Sadly, I left my run too late last year, and time would have beaten anyone who took up the challenge. This year we have another opportunity and this year the circumstances are even more crucial to consider such an initiative, our retailers really need all the help they can get to get people to choose to come Orange to shop over other places.

Brooklyn Bridge Brooklyn Bridge, an iconic landmark in the concrete jungle landscape and has been since 1883. The best thing about the walking bridge experience is the areas around both ends of the bridge are full of history and beautiful architecture. Did you know: It is described that an upper level low pressure system hit New York in 1867 and the East River completely froze over, preventing ferries from carrying Brooklyn commuters into Manhattan. It soon became the final straw as locals were forced to walk across the frozen river to work each day, that same year it was decided a bridge must be built.

Ride for a cause — JONATHAN ROE —

Volunteer motorcyclists are taking to the roads across Australia to deliver vital blood and medical supplies when needed.

Blood Bikes Australia was founded by Peter Davis, based on the blood bikers movement in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The idea is that volunteers can fill a gap and be available to transport blood and medical supplies whenever other transport is not available. “A very good friend of mine was a volunteer for Blood Bikes Scotland and I thought, what a bloody great idea!” said Peter. “I’m retired, I like riding my bike and this gives me an excuse to ride my bike and do some good.” First approaching Mater Pathology in Brisbane, Peter got the idea working on a small scale with nine volunteers across the Brisbane region, transporting blood medicines and other equipment. Thanks to publicity in motorcycle publications, Peter’s volunteer numbers are growing and he has been busy meeting with health services to try and see how they can fit in with existing pathology transport arrangements. “We’ve now got 82 volunteers Australia-wide in all states, in all capital cities and in the Sunshine Coast,

Peter said the idea has been welcomed by the senior health officials he has sat down with and he is now actively looking for new volunteer riders. “Firstly, we were looking for healthcare providers to volunteer for, but we are now ready to ramp up and get more volunteers,” he said.

Ed made use of the property’s abundant bore water to not only fill his fish ponds and irrigate the many crops he grew, but to heat two large greenhouses for year-round flower production. The water was also sold to a local mineral water bottler and distributed locally. He often described the importance of the bore water as the “central hub of a spoked wheel” on which the other farm enterprises revolved. He also used to mix and sell his own custom-made fertiliser mix that he would tailor to the soil requirements of his clients. Ed was never short of an idea and was constantly tinkering with new gadgets or tweaks on existing machinery. With his brother Don and Phil Stevenson, he invented the first articulated selfpropelled orchard sprayer, and in 1978 demonstrated it to the former PM Malcom Fraser at the ANFD. Iterations of which, are still being produced by Don and his son Glen at New Era Machinery.

The Central West lost one of its truly unique characters this month with the passing of Ed Wilson.

armer Ed, as he preferred to be called, was an orchardist, innovative multi-crop farmer, aquaculturist, inventor

and aviation enthusiast. Born in March 1940, the second of three children, Ed grew up on the family farm “Edenholme” at Forest Reefs. And from an early age his creativity and drive were evident, building his own threequarter sized T-Racing car and later a

bulk potato digger. Over the years Ed developed “Edenhome” into a thriving and extremely diverse agricultural enterprise, producing fish, yabbies, flowers, apples plums and vegetables — the majority of which were sold at local markets. One of Ed’s fishing tourism ventures “Rustic Valley” with son Matthew had a tank buried into the side of a large dam wall which included viewing windows where visitors would watch while he fed

the Rainbow, Brown, Brook trout and silver perch (using rejected cat food from the Friskies factory at Blayney). At its peak, Ed’s network of fishponds were home to a million yabbies and various fish species. He even devised a system where lights and temperature control were used to keep yabbies breeding throughout the winter months. Ed was later very involved in setting up the local orchardists in utilising their unused cool rooms for recirculated fish farming, producing Murray cod and Barramundi.

Flying was another life-long passion for Ed. His sister Pam recalls how Ed and Don managed to purchase and restore an Auster aircraft, build a hanger and landing strip — all while their parents were on an overseas holiday! Ed also built a gyrocopter and flew his own Chinook ultralight aircraft, which can be found today on display along with his Orchard sprayer and other machinery in the Millthorpe Museum. Ed featured on the ABC Landline program, which showcased many of his ventures above. It was so well received it was run twice due to popular demand. The rising cost of fuel and electricity was another problem Ed was keen to try and solve, partnering with neighbouring farmers to create their own Biofuel processing plants. It was in 1963, that Ed met the love of his life Jeanette Splithof and six years later they were married. The couple enjoyed 51 years of married life together and Jeanette says he was a wonderful father to their three children: Delene, Matthew and Anthony. But the wonder of it is that Ed survived

all those years, as there were more than a few close calls, according to Jeanette. “Ed had more than nine lives!” she said, going on to tell of the time he overturned a home-made air/swamp boat, while testing it on Wyangala Dam and almost drowned. “Ed went with his mate and his son and during a high speed run and becoming airborne, losing control and overturning they struck a tree branch and all went under,” she said. “Ed felt the young fellow climbing up his leg, so he reached down and pulled him up, after Ed had been struck by the rotating blade luckily only dislocating his shoulder. A very near miss for all!” Some of Ed’s other brushes with death included being pinned under cool room panels while moving them with a forklift, having a spot of trouble landing his Cessna aircraft (as he’d never flown it solo before), and spinning up cutting blades on a new machine he’d built only to have them explode at full revs to name a few. A chronic diabetic, Ed also had open heart surgery twice, a bad case of Ross River Fever, numerous strokes, Bell’s palsy and 3rd nerve palsy and high blood pressure, all of which he overcome or learned to live with. Ed’s health had begun deteriorating ten years ago and the loss of his son Matthew in a helicopter crash in 2011, did nothing to help. In 2015, Ed and Jeanette sold the family farm and moved into Orange. Hearing from Ed’s family and friends, they speak of a man of incredible energy, kindness and generosity. “Ed was one of the most generous and intelligent people I have ever known,” said Ed’s cousin Des Green, who gave the eulogy at a small private funeral early this month. “But the wonderful thing about Ed was that he didn’t live for just himself; helping others and brightening people’s lives also brought great joy to him.” Ed Wilson passed away peacefully on 1st July 2020 at Ascot Gardens Aged Care Home, aged 80 yrs.

“It’s just about the love for the animals,” says Karley Moczar the woman behind small local animal rescue Paws for More Central West. It was after rescuing a cat from Canowindra, that Karley reached out to Paws for More for help getting it desexed. They arranged for a discounted rate at a local vet and then she in turn helped them with another cat rescue… and then another.

“They asked me to help with a few animals and then I helped out with a few more and then I ended up running the Central West myself,” said Karley, who with a team of five other foster carers looks after around 60 rescue animals.

“I have rescued cats from pounds in Sydney, Canberra… Sadly a lot of them get euthanized if they go to the pound,” she said.

“Most of the animals are at my place. It’s challenging but we manage. I like doing it; I enjoy looking after the animals and finding them new homes and knowing that they are not reproducing again.” All the animals are desexed, vaccinated and microchipped before they are rehomed, but that doesn’t come cheap and Karley’s funds are limited. “I mostly work on my own and we are always in need of donations,” she said. “It does cost quite a lot and we try to do some fundraisers but being not that well known it is challenging to get

While most of the animals Karley looks after are cats, she has also rescued chickens, rabbits and is not the type to turn away from an animal in need.

At the start of this year Rachel Moreton picked up a stray mother and four young kittens near her home and after appealing for help on Facebook, got in touch with Karley and Paws for More. “Karley was the one that came forward and took Mumma and the babies. It was 9 O’clock at night, pouring rain and — God love her — she came out and helped me,” said Rachel, who is now a Paws for More Central West foster carer herself. “My main purpose was to get these poor babies off the street and then when we met Karley properly and… it is something we wanted to do for a long time and so that was when we took our three fosters home.”

Karly is just about to rehome her fifth cat and said the experience has been incredibly satisfying. “I love animals! I would have an animal sanctuary if I could,” she said. “Just to be able to help these poor defenceless little ones get off the street and get a good home is my main goal. “Paws for More is not very well known, so it would be lovely for the community to hear what Karley does and what the other foster people do and just try to help these poor little defenceless babies.” The few cats in Rachel’s care are fed and looked after out of her own pocket, but she said there is always a need for donations. “We are happy to plod along and support the one or two kittens we have, but Karley is always in need of cat food and cat litter… or you can sponsor a cat or kitten which ensures they are desexed and vaccinated.” Paws for More Central West currently have seven cats up for adoption. During the midst of Covid the outdoor play equipment received a facelift and reopened just in time for the school holidays. The Cook Park swings now have a new six-seat swing set, fixed into a smooth rubber surface, designed to make the structure more accessible for people of all abilities. The swing set features three standard swings, a toddler swing, a carer-and-child swing where they can swing together facing each other, and an inclusive ‘boat’ swing, a hammock-like swing for people with mobility challenges. The ducks are waddling about, some flowers are beginning to come out, how lucky we are to live in Orange! Cook Park is open every day from early morning until dusk. People using outdoor play equipment are reminded to follow COVID-19 public health orders including washing your hands before and after using the equipment, wiping down equipment before and after use, and maintaining physical distancing of 1.5 metres from people you do not live with.

COVID-19 Update

This week the Australian Government announced the extension of both Jobkeeper and Jobseeker and last week the new Jobtrainer program was launched. The Government has also extended the Coronavirus SME Guarantee Scheme in support of small and medium sized businesses. Our focus is on delivering practical support to businesses and their employees as we move into the next phase of the coronavirus crisis. Support will be targeted to businesses and individuals that continue to be significantly impacted by the coronavirus.

JOBKEEPER The Government is extending the JobKeeper Payment by a further six months to March 2021. The payment is being reduced as follows: • From 28 Sep 2020 to 3 Jan 2021: $1200 full rate or $750 for those who were employed for less than 20 hours a week on average in February 2020. • From 4 Jan 2021 to 28 March 2021: $1000 full rate or $650 for those who were employed for less than 20 hours a week on average in February 2020. From 28 September 2020, businesses will be required to reassess their eligibility by reference to their actual June and September quarter turnovers to demonstrate that they have suffered an ongoing significant decline in turnover. The JobSeeker payment replaced the former Newstart unemployment payment when coronavirus struck. The Government essentially doubled the old Newstart rate, by applying a $550 coronavirus supplement.

The Australian Government has announced a $2 billion JobTrainer skills package, to reform the Vocational Education and Training sector and keep apprentices in jobs.

• The JobSeeker coronavirus supplement will continue for another three months from September but it will be reduced from $550 to $250 a fortnight. • The Government will also be increasing the income free threshold for JobSeeker Payment and Youth Allowance to $300 a fortnight to encourage and support recipients to take up job opportunities as businesses reopen. The program will be reviewed again before December 2020.

• The JobTrainer package will include $500 million from the Australian Government this year, with a matched contribution being sought from state and territory governments. • The JobTrainer fund will provide around 340,700 additional training places to help school leavers and job seekers gain the skills they need to get a job. • A further $1.5 billion will be made available to expand the Supporting Apprentices and Trainees wage subsidy. • Eligibility for the subsidy will be expanded to include medium-sized businesses with 199 employees or fewer who had an apprentice in place on 1 July 2021. Charles Sturt University are giving the community and prospective students the perfect opportunity to increase their knowledge on ageing and later life.

On Wednesday July 22, Charles Sturt University launched the free online short course designed to challenge myths about ageing and offering current research evidence to support healthy ageing and age-friendly communities. The University’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Wangaratta Regional Study Centre are working with industry partners as part of the Leadership in Healthy Ageing Network (LiHA) which has devised the Understanding Ageing online course. Charles Sturt University Lecturer in the Master of Gerontology, Ms Robin Harvey and Lecturer in social work and gerontology Dr Belinda Cash,

both with the School of Humanities and Social Sciences in Albury-Wodonga, facilitated the launch of this new course. Ms Harvey, in collaboration with Dr Cash, developed the free online course for those with an interest in healthy ageing and to encourage prospective students towards a career in ageing or aged care. “This course aims to challenge old ways of thinking about ageing and give people knowledge to grow older with wellbeing, and within inclusive and supportive health services and communities,” Ms Harvey said. “We want to dispel myths about older people

through the provision of an interactive, online program and create easy access to information, based on current research evidence, to set up the living conditions for health and active ageing in the future. “As our ageing population increases, Understanding Ageing will be a valuable resource for individuals and workers to access in order to provide a more inclusive communities for older adults.” Whether you are an older person wanting to bring your own experiences of ageing, a family member looking to better understand or working in a related industry, this course is open to all.

New sanitisers to boost clean start for winter sports The first of more than forty hand-sanitisers, mounted in bollards, to be installed at parks and sportsgrounds around Orange are now being used by children at Jack Brabham sportsground. The new equipment, donated by Newcrest Mining will be installed at locations around Orange in the coming weeks. Newcrest Mining has provided 100 hand sanitiser bollards for sporting and outdoor recreational areas across Blayney, Cabonne and Orange regions. The donation, worth more than $60,000, is part of Newcrest’s $20M Community Support Fund which has been established to assist their local communities cope with the challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. The heavy-duty foot activated dispensers are currently being installed at entry points to playgrounds and sporting venues in preparation for the return of team sports in mid-July. Newcrest’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Sandeep Biswas, who was in Orange to hand over the hand sanitiser bollards, said the hand hygiene initiative is just one of the ways that Newcrest is assisting the community in the economic and social recovery from COVID-19. “This initiative is a simple way that we can assist in providing greater hand hygiene in public places, create safer community places for all users and increase public awareness to prevent the spread of COVID-19 at sporting and outdoor recreational areas,” Sandeep Biswas said. “The roll out of the bollards has been made possible thanks to our ongoing partnership with the local councils, which will provide the general repairs, maintenance and refilling of the bollards as part of the general maintenance of the sporting areas.” Orange Mayor Reg Kidd welcomed the donation from Newcrest. “Newcrest Mining are good corporate citizens for the communities of the central west,” Cr Reg Kidd said. “Whether it’s a small donation to a community group or a project like this which will help families using a sportsground to stay safe, Newcrest are willing to help out.” “Every member of the community has to play their part in keeping this pandemic at bay. Orange Airport welcomed the first Qantas flight from Sydney to Orange earlier this week. The flight touched down at the Airport at 11.20am, where a welcome reception was held with Orange councillors, Qantas delegates, local industry representatives and business members, before the flight returned to Sydney at noon. In February the airline announced it would offer flights to the Colour City starting on May 1, however, the plan was put on hold in late April due to COVID-19 restrictions. QantasLink will now fly three return flights between Sydney and Orange per week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, using a 36-seater Bombardier Q200 aircraft. It joins airlines Regional Express (Rex) and Fly Corporate in servicing Orange Regional Airport. Orange Mayor Reg Kidd has welcomed the airline’s commitment to Orange and said he’s looking forward to the region receiving an economic boost to help recover from the

QantasLink CEO John Gissing said the national carrier was pleased to be launching flights to Orange at a time when domestic travel was key to Australia’s tourism recovery. “The local community in Orange has been extremely supportive of QantasLink bringing competition to the route, which will create more competitive airfares and stimulate more demand for people to visit the region,” John Gissing said. “The Orange region is well known for its progressive and sophisticated food and wine scene and its friendly country hospitality so we are delighted to add this route to our domestic QantasLink network.” An expansion of the Orange service in future will depend on demand and evolving COVID-19 restrictions.

BRIEFS - Orange City Council meeting voted in favour of a Development Application for a new take-away food premises and signage of 50-52 Bathurst Road. The proposal is for a 42 seat Taco Bell outlet, a 24 space car park and a drivethrough. - Council also considered the next steps around a proposal by Health Infrastructure to demolish Caldwell House. Council voted in favour of a staff recommendation which would keep Caldwell House and allow the demolition of the former nurses quarters on the corner and other minor buildings. - The next Orange City Council meeting will be held on Tuesday 4 August 2020.

CSU engineering students in good hands at Orange City Council Orange City Council has welcomed a new cadet engineer to its ranks, with Charles Sturt University (CSU) student Rhys Nicholson joining the team in water and sewer. Twenty-one-year-old Rhys, from Wagga Wagga, is the fourth CSU engineering student to undertake a cadetship at Council, following in the footsteps of Lucknow’s Mitchell Beasley and Bathurst’s Georgina Wills and Jacob Tuxford. While the CSU course has only been running since 2016, it has already gained international recognition as an emerging leader in engineering education. The course is unique in that its students spend just three semesters, or 18 months, learning on-campus followed by four years of full-time paid work placement. Water minister inspects progress on Orange’s new pipeline Water Minister Melinda Pavey visited Orange to check progress on the a new $2.5 million water pipeline being built from Spring Creek Dam to the Orange Water Treatment plant. Ms Pavey said the government was continuing to fund critical water infrastructure projects for central west communities, as part of its emergency response to drought in regional NSW. “While the drought has eased in some areas, many towns continue to be at risk of water shortages or have already been living on severe water restrictions,” Mrs Pavey said. “Despite recent rainfall, water supplies for communities in the Central West region continue to be at risk and this funding is crucial to ensuring their long-term water security.”

Currently water has to be transferred along the creek to Suma Park Dam. “Almost all the 6 km pipe is now in the ground,” Cr Reg Kidd said. “The project began in June and is on time and within budget.” “Two large pumps that are needed to move water along the pipeline are being manufactured in France. These 220 kW pumps are capable of delivering 190 litres per second of water uphill to the Water Treatment Plant. “It’s expected the pipeline will generally operate in winter between May & September. Look across the CBD at sunset and you’re unlikely to miss seeing bright, new copper sheeting shining from within the nest of scaffolding surrounding the Orange United Church in Anson Street. This week Orange City Life caught up with the father and son team from Sydneybased Ashford Roofing, who have made heritage work their speciality for over 35 years. “I did my trade in England,” said Ray. “I used to do all the old Benskins pubs and all the manor houses and so on. I’ve mainly done heritage work and it is a lot easier in my opinion, you’re not running around trying to compete with everyone else, doing everything from iron roofs to tile roofs — I’ve done them all, but this is like a niche thing.” Copper, slate and English peg tiles are the Ashford’s speciality and that, of course, means their clients more often than not, fall into one of

two categories.

OCLife “Nothing is square in our business, pretty much everything is always a bit wonky, but this tower is definitely bent.” Ben can count on his fingers the number of times he has worked on a regular tile or corrugated iron roof and he has no plans of doing any more if he can help it. “I could never do the normal roofing; you might as well just chuck me in an office,” he said. “With this, it’s always different, you get to see different places and we travel around Australia and overseas.” The specialised nature of their work means the Ashford’s are booked up for about a year ahead. They are currently building copper domes on a building in Canberra and have 21,000 slate tiles ready to go on a roof in Sydney. The nature of the materials they work with means it is quite a physical job and clambering over steep church roofs is not for everybody. “Oh, we hate heights,” both Ray and Ben reply when asked, which isn’t exactly the answer one would expecting from people in their profession. “Well, I have had a couple of structures underneath me go and that’s more what I’m scared about,” Ben said. “It’s not the height, but what I’m walking on. “I’ve had I-beams not bolted in the centre and they’ve split on me and stuff like that. Most accidents are because someone hasn’t done their job probably. “But heights? You get used to it after a while. You have to have respect for it, but in saying that you’ve got to learn for everything to become second nature… you’ve got to be able to do it with your eyes closed, know where everything is because you have to carry stuff — it is certainly not something that you pick up in a couple of days. “When we bring a guy on, we won’t let them go onto a roof for months and months, because they have to learn how to walk on the tiles and just take their time.”

Clean start to winter sports in the central west Newcrest Mining is assisting the Central West in making a clean start to winter sports, with the donation of 100 hand sanitiser bollards for sporting and outdoor recreational areas across Blayney, Cabonne and Orange regions. The donation, worth more than $60,000, is part of Newcrest’s $20M Community Support Fund which has been established to assist their local communities cope with the challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. The heavy-duty foot activated dispensers are currently being installed and stocked with hospital grade hand sanitiser across various entry points to sporting venues in preparation for the return of team sports in mid July. Newcrest’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Sandeep Biswas, who was in Orange to hand over the hand sanitiser bollards, said the hand hygiene initiative

is just one of the ways that Newcrest is assisting the community in the economic and social recovery from COVID-19. “This initiative is a simple way that we can assist in providing greater hand hygiene in public places, create safer community places for all users and increase public awareness to prevent the spread of COVID-19 at sporting and outdoor recreational areas,” Sandeep said. The Newcrest Community Support Fund has been established to provide immediate assistance in the prevention of COVID-19, and these dispensers will ensure another layer of protection against community transmission if another outbreak occurs, while continuing to allow the community to enjoy team sports. “The roll out of the bollards has been made possible thanks to our ongoing partnership with the local councils, which will provide the general repairs, maintenance and

Calare Aged care had enjoyed the slight edging of total restr ictions over the last few weeks conducte d under restrict requirements, everyone was happ y with one on one visitors by arrangem ent, strictly enforced in a cheerful manner by Cala re staff, management and residents. This letter to the Editor is to assure all relat ives, friends, volunteers, professionals, trades and general public that there is no virus in the centre or has been suffered by anyo ne connected to Calare Aged Care Orange, all are happy.
