tarted by the late Stephanie Sandford with the help of lifelong friends, Leesa Chaseling, Bella Fisher and Dimity Bartlett. Dance Fuse has become a legacy delivering Dance education programs to primary and infant schools in Orange and the surrounding areas.

has now become a not for profit charity with the ambition to fulfil Steph’s dream of inspiring and influencing the community’s school aged children. All profits raised which, to date is an incredible $19,000 have been invested into a mixture of local, regional and international foundations that share Steph’s desire to change lives and support those who need it the most.

It has been said Steph’s goal was to nurture an explosion of dance in each individual, a fuse that lights a fire in you that helps you express what you are feeling. She knew that dance could tell a story about what a person has been through.

Dance Fuse, Aaron Chaseling said, “Dan (Steph’s Husband) has been the driving force behind turning Dance Fuse into a charity, continuing exactly what Steph was doing with the addition of some fundraising and activities around it to impact the lives of kids and people in the community on a much larger scale. Spread the love, that is the heart behind what we see Dance Fuse as.”

Steph’s Father, Sandro Tranfaglia explained, “Steph always believed that dance would bring people, families and groups together, she wanted to bring happiness to people’s lives and create something where people can enjoy the love of dance, giving everyone an opportunity to dance and have fun.” “Whether you’re at the pub, or a meeting, or a party, as soon as there’s music, it tends to bring people together, whether they just move their arms or it just brings a smile to their face.” In honour of Steph and her vision, Dance Fuse 4

Through the community’s donations the team have been able to invest into an Orange family who are facing enormous challenges as their baby fights cancer. They are supporting a family in Dubbo and one in Newcastle. They have also been able to sponsor six children, rescue seven children from overseas trafficking and donate to research organisations Children’s Cancer Institute and The Mark Hughes Foundation.

As expected COVID has had an impact on the dance school aspect, with Zoom classes becoming the norm, Dimity explained, “It was good to still be able to reach out and have the connectivity with the kids, although it did bring its challenges. The main thing to remember throughout it all is we are keeping Steph’s dream alive and with classes beginning to get back to normal the kids are still loving it.” Leesa added, “We offer a really professional, fully qualified teaching service. There is so much work that we want to see happen with Dance Fuse but it would be great to get more people onboard to help out. There are some big things coming up that we need to talk to the team about where the community will potentially see some massive things happen.” Sandro continued, “It’s absolutely overwhelming to know and see who just how many people we are assisting. “For me, as a Dad, I wanted her dance school to continue, my wife and I are overwhelmed that they are able to continue Dance Fuse in a positive charitable way and are able to bring

smiles to kids’ faces and it’s great to see the passion of dance continue. To come this far has been surreal.” Sandro continued, “Going through a cancer journey is extremely tough, bills keep coming in, cost of treatment is always there, and being able to assist in that small way is amazing, whether it be electricity, accommodation or food. INSPIRING WORDS From time to time over the centuries someone has uttered words, a saying or a phrase that has stood the test of time, words that inspire, encourage or are just right for the time. It’s with that thought that this week in my column, I thought I’d just share a number of inspiring words or sayings with our readers. There’s no rhyme or reason, or any special order for those I’ve included, they’re just random words, quotes and sayings that someone might need to hear about now. Many of us are facing challenges and hurdles like never before, and sometimes words like these can be a real comfort or support, just when we need them. Even if you don’t need this sort of encouragement right now, these words are good to ponder or reflect on at any time, or maybe just to share with someone who you feel needs to hear them. “Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.” “Optimism is a happiness magnet. ART AND WATER PLAY COULD GO SWIMMINGLY TOGETHER

At Orange City Life we always like hearing your ideas, especially when it comes to pushing Orange forward. Over the past few weeks we have received quite a bit of positive feedback for our editor Bob Holland’s idea’s for a walk of art in the Botanic Gardens.

parked by Bob’s idea, we were contacted by a reader and life-long Orange local Ben Humphreys, who had his own thoughts on getting the most out of one of Orange’s most beautiful attractions.

“The Orange Botanical Gardens is one of my favourite spots to take my son and can be used all year round. The council have already done a fantastic job making the gardens what they are today,” writes Ben, who goes on to say that he believes the dam and water courses could be made into a real drawcard for the area. “My son often says to me, ‘Dad, how good would it be if you could swim here’ and to be honest I don’t see why not,” says Ben.

GOSLING CREEK IS CHANGING T H E FA C E O F AG ED CA R E

“My idea would be to create a fun and interactive swimming area for younger children consisting of a toddlers pool/man-made lake or something similar. We could have chairs and tables set up with umbrellas to keep the sun away with waterfalls and water sprouts for the kids to play in. An adult swim area would also be great to have. “I can just see the parents taking their kids to the adventure playground before lunch then setting themselves up in a spot over in the gardens where the kids can play around in the shallow water designated areas.” Given Orange’s climactic conditions, Ben Acknowledges that such an area would only be useable in the warmer months, but even in winter it could make the area more aesthetically pleasing. “During Winter it could be just as nice for people to

walk around the gardens with a bit of water flow. There is something about the sound and sight of flowing water, it just seems to make the area better rather than seeing mud banks and dry causeways,” he said. “Any water system that is put in place would have to be on a cycle to keep the water flowing all year round.” On the topic of water, Ben also goes on to lament the removal of the waterway on the far side of Lake Canobolas. “I remember as a kid how cool it was to play around in the water or just watching the water flow and the sound of the water flowing was peaceful and relaxing,” he says. In February/March the warning signs for COVID were across our television screens, in our timelines and confronting reality, this led to Director of Macquarie Medi Spa, Karla McDiarmid to approach skincare giant Dermalogica, to see what could be done for our local health facilities, in both Orange and Bathurst. Karla explained, “I just felt for our healthcare services, they don’t get the gratitude they deserve, with the hours they work and it could have been any of us that were needing to be looked after. Karla continued, “We’ve never seen this in our

JOHN’S WINNING DESIGNS — JONATHAN ROE —

“Architecture is a great deal of common sense,” says John Andrews, sitting in the sunlit open loungeroom of his Orange home.

Dominating one wall of the living room is a large photograph showing an internal view of the vast glass, steel and concrete Intelsat Headquarters in Washington DC, a landmark building John won the contract design Nooters Club A5toflyer.pdf in 1980. On other walls you’ll find photos of other buildings from John’s long career: the CN Tower in Toronto, once the world’s tallest building; Scarborough College, Gund Hall at the Harvard Graduate College of Design, Boston; and the 30-story NRMA Tower in Sydney — complete with the original sun shades that were later removed, much to John’s obvious annoyance, even after 20 years. “That was incredibly successful as it was one of the first buildings ever designed that took sun control as a factor… That building was monitored and it only ever used 65 per cent of the energy a normal building used — almost reduced it by half, but nobody could see the sense of that 20 years

ago when they took them off,” said John.

“I had not done very well in high school and they said you can’t do architecture, you have to do law,” said John. “When it came time, I did well enough in my leaving certificate that I matriculated which meant I could go to university anyway in those days, so I went and enrolled in architecture, with physics and chemistry, which you supposedly needed. “I learnt later on that it is far more important to be able to write the English language. Physics and chemistry have to do with engineering, and you can always get an engineer to do it.” He says it is something that always stood him in good stead and later in his career, while Chairman of architecture at the University of Toronto, John actually made changes to the course to focus more on humanities than to science. After graduating from the University of Sydney in 1956, he left Australia and entered into a Master of Architecture program at Harvard University, where he studied under Jose Louis Sert. While at Harvard, John and a team of his fellow student came second in a competition to design the new Toronto City Hall, which set him up for a career in Canada, where he would remain until 1969. “It was an incredibly good time in Canada,” says

John. “Canada’s attitude was to get behind young people… and a lot of the government work was given to young architects including me and that was a real good start.”

John’s first major project, at just 29 years of age, and one that remains one of the most well-known of his career, is the massive concrete megastructure at Scarborough College — still known today as the Andrews Building.

John returned with his family to Australia in 1969, to work on the Cameron Offices in Belconnen, then the largest building ever constructed in Australia and home to the Australian Bureau of Statistics and other government departments for decades.

“And that was probably the most significant building that I ever did... to me, the most important building I ever did.”

Upon completion, the building received wide publicity, thanks in part to John stubbornly holding out for Time Magazine to feature it in their international edition. “I remember, Time magazine wanted to publish it and I wouldn’t let them until they put it in the colour edition,” says John. “There were two; one North American edition and one was the world edition. I said not until you put it in the big one, which they would do eventually. It took about six months, but I knew the value of Time magazine internationally and not just in Canada and I got a lot of work out of it.” Another iconic building in John’s career was Gund Hall at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design.” “I knew there were a whole lot of people who wanted to do it and thought they should do it… but

Australians lives have been drastically changed by the COVID-19 pandemic; just one example being the rapid adoption of telehealth.

“Actually five coronavirus cases came to me for diagnosis by telehealth, so if it were not for telehealth I probably would have been exposed to these five patients and the medical centre would have been shut down for two weeks,” he said.

“So, it has been very, very helpful.” Since March, Australian have been able to get GP consultations via video or phone and in Orange it seems patients have gladly taken up the opportunity. Dr Thim Chen, Principal GP at the Wellness House, said that during the initial few weeks of the pandemic lockdown, more than 90 per cent of their appointments were conducted via telehealth. Now, with the immediate threat of the virus less prevalent, there is around a 50-50 split between in-person and telehealth consultations. For the safety of patients and staff at the medical centre during this pandemic, telehealth has been a greatly beneficial tool, he said.

Telehealth is very convenient for some patients, said Dr Chen although he stressed it is not suitable in every case. “It is convenient for the patient, particularly the older ones that don’t want to come out of the house in winter and some of them are saying we should have started it a long time ago,” he said. “But still, you know, medicine is a science and an art. For me, I think I prefer to see the patient face to face… for repeating scripts and that sort of thing it is quite easy, but obviously it has its limitations. I mean, a skin cancer can’t really be diagnosed by telehealth or a suspicion of a fracture, so I’m sitting

on the fence. I think some patients we know would be good for telehealth and some patients really need to come face to face.” In particular, Dr Chen said telehealth works best when there is already an established relationship between a GP and patient — something the federal government has addressed by limiting access to telehealth services under the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) only to a patient’s regular GP or practice. But given the enthusiasm with which doctors and patients around the country have taken to

telehealth it looks set to remain a part of our health care system past the end of the current pandemic. Especially given this statement from federal health minister Greg Hunt on Friday. “I hope and intend for telehealth to be a positive legacy of this crisis and am already engaged with the medical community in planning a long-term future for telehealth,” Mr Hunt said. And please remember, if you have any form of cold, fever, cough, sore throat or shortness of breath please make use of telehealth services and do not attend your local medical centre in person.

One of Orange’s sporting hubs, Wade Park, is soon to undergo a welcomed upgrade with a $100,000 grant from the Australian Government. The funding will go towards replacing the grandstand seating with more modern, flip-up seating which will increase the ability for both spectators and cleaners to move in between seats.

Hopefully our region will remain COVID-free so that real spectators can enjoy the comfortable new seating rather than the cardboard cut-outs that have appeared at so many sporting events recently!

√ $9,000 for the Spring Hill Activities Group to support community initiatives √ $10,000 for the Millthorpe Village Committee to improve the safety of Richard Lane.

REGIONAL UNIVERSITIES ROUNDTABLES Last week, I convened the first of the Regional Universities Roundtables with Chancellors and ViceChancellors from ten of Australia’s major regional universities. I initiated the Regional Universities Roundtables to provide Australia’s major regional universities with a unique opportunity to discuss issues currently impacting country universities and communities, particularly in light of COVID-19 and the Government’s new proposed tertiary education reforms. While there was, generally speaking, support for the proposed reforms, it was clear to me that the Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors present share a number of the same concerns about how the proposed tertiary education reforms specifically impact regional universities. I will be feeding these concerns back into the broader discussion on tertiary education reform and to the Nationals' Party Room for the consideration of other country MPs, before making a call on what position we'll take on the package.

As services were temporary suspended to protect women, staff and community from the risk of COVID-19. From this week, BreastScreen NSW are inviting all women aged 50-74 years to book in for their potentially lifesaving, free screening mammogram.

To prioritise the wellbeing of women, staff and the community, BreastScreen NSW is taking all necessary measures to limit the transmission of COVID-19. This includes pre-screening questions around personal health and travel, limiting the number of people in the clinic/van, practicing social distancing and providing hand sanitizer in waiting rooms. They will have a minimal contact check-in process

and additional cleaning of equipment and commonly used surfaces. Manager of BreastScreen NSW Greater Western, Meg O’Brien says a screening mammogram is one of the most important things women aged 50-74 can do for their health. “Detecting breast cancer early increases your chance of survival while reducing the likelihood of invasive treatment, such as

mastectomy or chemotherapy. Bringing this vital service to Orange means more local women can be screened. Life gets busy and we want women to make their health a priority.” The screening clinic is located at the Orange Health Service, Forest Rd, Orange. ODEEP was successful in receiving funding for 10 laptops and 10 iPads through Cadia’s Community Partnership Program, which has focused on providing funds to assist community groups and organisations affected by COVID-19. ODEEP General Manager, Kylie Streatfield, said, ”the laptops and tablets have allowed our families to remain connected with our services

“We are just sharing a love of what we do,” said Robin Marshall, one of a group of local artisans and artisan makers behind a successful pop-up exhibition over the weekend.

Robin and friends Giuliana Hannelly and Jennifer Lacey met 15 years ago while teaching at what was formerly known at the MET School.

The success of the weekend has the group planning for a future pop-up events and they believe that there is plenty of room for other local artists and artisans to do the same.

Robin, a hospitality teacher, has long had a side hustle selling preserves under the name ‘Just Homegrown,’ Giuliana also sells a line of Italian bakery treats, and Jennifer, an experienced art teacher, is know for her abstract art and prints. Together the three friends had long thought about holding some kind of exhibition and initially planned one for March. “We always talked about doing a pop-up somewhere and we were going to do it up the main street just before COVID hit and that put the Kibosh on that,” said Giuliana.

Miriam Dawes solo exhibition — JONATHAN ROE —

Miriam Dawes is one of Orange’s senior citizens with a fascination for all the visual arts, which — in her words — ‘can be found everywhere.’

Since her retirement from the workforce, Miriam has made use of her extra time to explore the art world and her favourite medium — water colour. She has produced many beautiful and delicate works, developing a very recognisable style of her own. In more recent years, Miriam has moved out of her comfort zone and tentatively dabbled in abstract art. It was receiving tuition from Neil Cuthbert that turned her world upside down and now bold and colourful works are emerging from her studio. out into the wilderness to immerse themselves in nature and put down their impressions on canvas. With this group of ‘Wilderists,’ she has spent time painting in the Capertree Valley and Lake Mungo. Miriam’s latest solo exhibition is now on display at the Orange Art Society Inc. Gallery (located in the Cultural Centre rooms and accessible from the Woolworth's Carpark) and includes works from all the above styles. The official opening will take place on Saturday 18 July, 2-4pm. Light refreshments will be served. The exhibition will run until Saturday 8 August. If the flag is out at the door is open, head in and have a browse!

Method:

Step 1 Combine brown sugar, butter, white sugar, and salt in a large bowl; beat with an electric mixer until a creamy, deep brown mixture forms. Add egg and vanilla; beat until mixture lightens and becomes smooth, 10 to 15 seconds. Step 2 Mix flour and baking soda together in a separate bowl. Add slowly to the wet ingredients until mostly incorporated, but some white traces of flour remain. Fold in milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and white chocolate using a spatula, not the mixer. Cover the dough and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 48 hours. Step 3 Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) when ready to bake. Step 4 Divide cold dough into 2 1/4-ounce portions and place on a cookie sheet. Step 5 Bake in the preheated oven until the edges start to look golden brown and crispy, 10 to 12 minutes. Do not overbake; the centers will not look fully done. Cool until cookies are set, about 30 minutes.
