Take a book at North Orange! — MELISE COLEMAN —
I
Walking into the North Orange Shopping Centre, it’s hard to miss the purple bookshelf that sits humbly out the front of Woolworths.
t’s with thanks to good friends Dianne Waddell and Judy Jackson, and Judy’s impressive book collection that had the two ladies were deliberating how they could enhance the community centre.
Judy explained, “Di came to borrow some books from my house one day, she came in and when she had a look, she looked shocked,” Judy laughed. Dianne smiled, “I know I did, I was blown away that they were all Judy’s books.” Judy continued, “I said I want to get rid of my books, I’ve got nearly 3,000 books at home, the children don’t want them and it just seems silly to have this resource, sitting unused, collecting

dust. So we got to talking and said let’s start a street library... we couldn’t do it in a street, so we asked the North Orange Shopping Centre.” We felt the North Orange Shopping Centre needed a library as the area has grown so much. There’s quite a lot of new housing here so it’s great for young families.” The principle of this library was based on a ‘street library’ which is take a book and return it when read. It is absolutely free to everyone. Both Dianne and Judy estimate they have left 150 books each. “Of all of the books I’ve put in here, there’s only one book I put that’s still there, so there’s an enormous turnover which we didn’t realise just how big until now. The good thing is we are recycling the books, they are not being wasted,
people love books,” said Judy. “I’d like to expand the children’s books, they arrive and go pretty immediately.”
...The good thing is we are recycling the books, they are not being wasted, people love books...
Dianne continued, “We are very grateful to the management of the North Orange Shopping Centre for making this library possible. I could not believe how receptive they were, the Centre Manager was so enthusiastic, and the bookcase was provided which was specially made for us. They were just fantastic.” Bring a book and leave it on the shelf, or if one sparks your interest feel free to take it home. It is appreciated that the community are not leaving items that aren’t books in that space. Dianne and Judy hope to extend the bookcase and add some more books in the near future!

with Bob Holland
NO GUTS, NO GLORY! For quite some time I’ve felt that Orange has been slowly grinding to a standstill in some very important areas. I’m sure there are others who agree with me, but whether you do or don’t, please consider the consequences for Orange if I’m right? I’m a professional businessman with a pretty good track record, not outstanding, but on balance, pretty good. I think it’s fair to say I now know what it takes to start up and build a successful business. Experience is a great teacher isn’t it? I mention this because over my 58 working years, I’ve learnt a thing or two about what it takes to establish a successful business. With my keen interest in advertising and marketing, I’ve seen and helped people do some remarkable things in their businesses, I’ve also come across a lot of people who should never be in business in the first place. Starting a business requires a special type of person, making that business into a success requires someone even more special, someone who is willing to be a risk taker, someone who’s prepared to fail occasionally but resilient enough to pick themselves up and go again. To be successful in business, it’s definitely not for the weak or faint hearted.
Los Angeles “Hiking the hills of Hollywood. In my opinion everyone needs to see the Hollywood sign up close once. A great combo of exercise, sightseeing, and for those who take the guided tours. A film buff's dream; they show you locations where filming took place for movies including Terminator and Back to the Future. Experiencing 360 panoramic views of downtown Los Angeles was incredible! We were lucky to get a reasonably clear day though the smog is evident in the distance."
~ Melise Coleman
It’s for this reason that I consider Orange just like a business, so when judging how we’re performing in business terms, anyone who understands business would say that in the areas that really matter, Orange is doing poorly. My concern over this has been simmering away beneath the surface for some time, hoping that the situation would change, hoping those responsible would eventually see the error of their ways and then start to get us back on the right track. Sadly, this hasn’t happened, if
anything, things have gotten worse and the Covid-19 crisis has only compounded the situation. A lot of the activity currently happening looks and sounds impressive, but it’s still not addressing those issues needed to set Orange up well for the future. Many of the current initiatives by our local Council are similar to those the Federal Government is doing, sure they address certain issues, but on balance, appear to be nothing more than thought bubbles that in practice or under analysis, have not been well thought out or thought through. The expression Band-aid solutions comes to mind. I and others have tried on numerous occasions to engage the various stakeholders, including Council, to come together and nut this all out. We have failed time after time, only to watch the same people doing the same old things over and over again. Many of the people tasked with making important decisions like this, would never succeed in business, yet they have the responsibility for running the biggest business we have - our City. It’s now time for me to try something else. I started our new free local newspaper publication Newswatch to take up this challenge. One of the aims of Newswatch is to highlight any or all of those issues or decisions that likeminded people like me believe are holding Orange back, and there are numerous. I will do this over and over again, until I start to see steps taken where people with the necessary skills and experience are being listened to. I place myself among them. That’s all I want to say for now other than, if this subject interests you, and I hope it does, grab this Saturday’s issue of Newswatch and read my Special Report called No Guts, No Glory!

Anson Street Celebrate Canada Day — MELISE COLEMAN —
Anson Street School paid homage to their Canadian exchange Teacher by celebrating Canada Day on July 1. Rick Ramada has been a part of the Anson Street family since December 2019 and admitted the temperature difference was the biggest shock when we arrived. “When I flew into Australia I flew straight up to Cairns and saw the Great Barrier Reef, I went from -25 at home to +35 degrees so that was a bit of a shock for sure, but I loved it, it was so beautiful,” said Rick. “The support and encouragement that I have received from the staff here has been amazing, they’ve really taken me in and really shown me what it’s like to be a Teacher here and made me feel very welcome and supported, and of course the students are incredible, I’ve actually learned a lot from teaching them. “I’m very grateful that everyone has shown such

Rick is missing home a little bit and we thought what a perfect opportunity for the students to learn about a different culture and a different country.” Staff were treated to a special Canadian lunch from Smoking Brothers and Rick spoke to different classes about Canadian culture, celebrating with a Canadian breakfast and a game of Lacrosse. The hallways were decorated with Canadian flag bunting, with students and teachers also dressing in Canadian colours for the day.

Home pride -
Residents proud to call Oak Tree Orange home
After a visit to Oak Tree Retirement Village Orange, it’s difficult to pick which is the most prominent feature: the colourful, picturesque setting overlooking the Wentworth Golf Club, or the friendly community that envelops the village. But one thing that’s undoubtable is the pride that the residents have in their homes and their village. Idyllic location
A change for the better
Situated high on the hill overlooking the Wentworth Golf Club, nature abounds, while the conveniences of the town centre are located just 5 minutes away. From the wide-open surrounding spaces to the onsite bowling green to the Village Centre and hair dressing salon, there’s no shortage of things to see and do.
Having lived in Sydney almost all her life, Kerri Breheny naturally thought she’d retire there. Instead, she is having the time of her life as a resident at Oak Tree Orange.
Growing up in Forbes in New South Wales’ central west, Julie Anthoness didn’t always call Orange home. After visiting a friend who lived in Orange and was encouraging her to make the move, she quickly began to understand the attraction. “The town ticked all the boxes – good medical, good shopping, good public transport – and it was closer to Sydney, so I’d be closer to my girls. Physical health and fitness have been important to me all my adult life and Orange provides the opportunities to continue an active life.” Community essence Whether it’s long-term Orange residents wanting to retire in the area they know and love, moving to be closer to family, or following in the footsteps of friends already in the village, Oak Tree Orange definitely has all the hallmarks of a local community. In this friendly, carefree community, there’s always someone to talk to, cheery waves for passing neighbours, familiar faces while out for walks, or connecting over a shared leisure interest.
“Orange is a wonderful regional city with great shopping, medical services, recreation facilities, cafés, restaurants, theatres, wineries, festivals and more – it had everything I could possibly need, and then some.” “I’ve been here for almost two years now and I’m having the time of my life amongst friends. We have so much in common and thrive on each other’s company. We regularly go out to dinner, to the movies and the theatre. We never miss an opportunity to enjoy each other’s company and have fun.” “It’s a beautiful family environment and wonderful community to be part of. I truly do consider myself to be lucky to be an Oak Tree Orange resident.”

“When the Covid-19 problem came to, us we sat down and talked about how we were going to operate and plan for this next period of time, but one of the things we talked about was who else is suffering? And who else is going to be battling? We talked about people who might lose their jobs and so we decided to embark on this program” said Bob Nash, Chairperson of the Orange Uniting Church Council. The church has long been involved in food outreach programs, although the COVID-19 pandemic has forced them to cease serving their regular Wednesday lunches. Social distancing requirements have also shut down similar programs run by other organisations, which is why Bob said the church decided to step up and do something. “When COVID came, some of the other organisations that have done that sort of thing for a while weren’t able to continue, because it was

congregation and some people outside of the congregation. And in the last month or so we’ve had people give us warm clothing, jackets and jumpers and blankets and people who knit and crochet items to give away,” said Bob.
“So, it is just a little niche that the Orange Uniting Church has filled and it’s growing all the time. We are seeing homeless people, we’re seeing young families who have lost their jobs, we’re seeing elderly people who are struggling to cook, a whole variety of people who have need.” For the past two months, church volunteers have been cooking hot meals which are distributed free of charge from the Anson Street church hall between 5pm and 6pm on Saturdays. The food is distributed in takeaway containers with everyone observing social distancing requirements. “We have a core group of people who will cook up enough food for up to 50 people and then we gather on Saturday afternoon and put it all together and distribute some decent homecooked food,” said Bob. “And we have a good store of frozen meals, so if a family turns up, we might give them four or five hot meals and four or five frozen meals. Along with the free meals, the church also has a small selection of fruit, bread and other grocery items that people can take with them. “There is no cost, it is totally being funded by generous donations by members of our
“And if anybody might be sleeping out and truly suffering, we also have a couple of swags that we make available, something they can use on a short-term basis.”
...We have a core group of people who will cook up enough food for up to 50 people and then we gather on Saturday afternoon and put it all together...
While the program has so far been supported by the volunteers, the church was recently given a generous donation from Newcrest Cadia Valley Operations community partnerships program that will allow them to grow the program. “Cadia have very generously included our community program in their plans and that will be sufficient money for us to be able to not only step up the quality and amount of food that we give, but it means that we can continue to operate right through until Christmas,” said Bob. “It has proven to us that there is a real need in our community for it, so we are now making plan as to how we can do it a little bit better, improve things. We are very pleased that we are able to fill this little gap for however long, to the end of the year and maybe beyond.”

$200,000 TO LIGHT UP TOM CLYBURN OVAL, CANOWINDRA

Visibility and safety at Tom Clyburn Oval is about to get whole lot better with new lighting on its way.

The upgrades will include improved light towers at the oval, located within the sporting and recreation precinct of Canowindra, which incorporates a fitness path, skate park, tennis and netball/basketball courts.
√ $10,000 for the Millthorpe Village Committee to improve the safety of Richard Lane.
Improving lighting across this sporting precinct will be well received by the fifteen clubs that use it regularly, and for those using the walking paths. It will also increase the appeal for visiting teams while lowering operating costs with the increased efficiency of the LED lighting. A big high-five to the sporting community of Canowindra who asked for this upgrade. I’m delighted we’ve been able to deliver!

EMERGENCY ALERT AUSTRALIA — JONATHAN ROE —
IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION, TIME IS VITAL. FIRST RESPONDERS OFTEN HAVE TO MAKE DECISIONS IN A SPLIT SECOND AND HAVING THE BEST INFORMATION AT HAND CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LIFE OR DEATH. Even a simple medical alert bracelet can be lifesaving, making first responders and medical staff aware of chronic conditions like diabetes, mental illness, or food and drug allegories that could result in a misdiagnosis and potentially fatal outcome.
Alert USBs can hold as much information as you want to put on it. On mine I’ve got my medication, my allergies, blood group, next of kin, mobile numbers and a photo, even that I have two dogs at home and what their names are.
But there is only so much information that can fit on medical alert bracelet.
“That is a lot more information than you can possibly get onto an identity bracelet. So, with this you can just have more methods of contact, just so much more information.”
Emergency Alert Australia is a local company that is looking to solve that problem. They offer a range of USB medical keychains, zipper fobs and wallet-cards that can store all the information you need to speak for you in an emergency. “It is much along the same lines of a medical bracelet, but our USBs give much more information,” said company founder Ivy Smith. “A medical bracelet might tell emergency services that you have diabetes, but not what medications you are on. Our Emergency
The team behind Emergency Alert Australia have decades of experience in emergency services and have personally attended countless motor vehicle accidents and other emergency situations. “Car accident were the original reasons we came up with these USBs as people in that situation can’t always talk for themselves,” said Lily. “So the idea is; if you can’t talk, it can talk for you. Everything you would need to say is all
“
...SO THE IDEA IS; IF YOU CAN’T TALK, IT CAN TALK FOR YOU. EVERYTHING YOU WOULD NEED TO SAY IS ALL WRITTEN OUT ON THE EMERGENCY ALERT USB...
written out on the Emergency Alert USB.”, Included with the Emergency Alert USB are two stickers that can be placed in a visible location on the vehicle to tell first responders where to look for the device. “And it is not just for car accidents. It could be for people on mobility scooters, or I’ve given some to my niece and nephews who have sticker on their pushbike helmets and carry the USB sticks on their schoolbags. We have waterproof USBs for bushwalkers or motorcyclists that can go on a jacket zipper. “So they can provide piece of mind for anyone with outdoor hobbies and even for your elderly relatives in nursing homes who might be prone to wander. I firmly believe that this device could — and will! — save someone’s life.” Emergency Alert Australia are a Molongbased company who are proud to donate 10 per cent of all profits made to support mental health charities.

Mount Canobolas Blossoming — MELISE COLEMAN — Last week we had Molong local, Michael Carroll pop into the office with some beautiful pictures of when Mount Canobolas seemed to be thriving, an estimated 20 years ago. “I think I was just sticky-beaking,” said Michael. “I’d just walked up the top and was on my way back down when I was snapping those photos. The phenomenon of Canobolas is just wonderful and I wanted to share these photos so others could appreciate the natural history also.” Thankyou for sharing your stunning pictures with us Michael.

CATCH THE REGION’S BEST LOCAL MUSIC TALENT LIVE FROM
the Dotted Eight Studio — JONATHAN ROE —
W
AS THE IMPACT OF THE CORONAVIRUS STRUCK HOME, LOCAL AUDIO ENGINEER CRAIG HONEYSETT WATCHED AS THE MUSICIANS HE WORKED WITH LOST GIGS AND WERE LEFT WITHOUT AN INCOME. anting to do what he could, Craig turned his Dotted Eight Studio into a live-streaming venue, providing a virtual stage every Friday for some of our region’s best music talent.
“I was working lots with Robbie Mortimer and he, like a lot of musos, had no gigs at the moment. So, I wanted to figure out a way we could get him in front of his audience, then I thought there’s a ton of musos locally who are in the same boat,” said Craig. “So, I just started inviting artists I knew, prominent live musicians… I had the facility and the skillset to be able to do it and it has just been cool to invite them in.” Over the past few months ‘Live from the Dotted Eight Studio’ has featured the likes of Clancy Pye, Robbie Mortimer, Lueth Ajak and Austin Logan — each playing live, intimate and interactive sets via Facebook Live.
“People have loved it, and every artist that I’ve had in here has just been stoked, super thankful for the opportunity to get in front of an audience again,” said Craig.
streams and making sure it is sounding good. People are listening with headphones and saying it is like they’re right there,” he said.
“It is just an opportunity for people to connect with their fans and because they are streaming through my system, they can have their phones or iPad with them and in between songs say hi, talk to the people watching and get that sort of ‘face to face’ interaction.
Craig plans to continue the weekly live streams until at least the end of August and has local favourites Smith & Jones performing in the studio at 7pm this Friday.
“And it has meant I’ve met a few people for the first time… people like Clancy Pye and Smith & Jones I just love their music and listen to it so this has been a great opportunity to invite them in and meet them.” As an audio engineer, a simple video feed was not enough for Craig, who has made sure the audio quality is top notch.
“At the moment, while I can help artists — and it’s been good to get the studio name out — that’s enough for me. If the industry is strong, then I still have a job, if it’s not then I don’t. So I’m just happy to be helping and making sure that people have an audience and that the audience has someone to be entertained by.”
“I wanted to get the sound even better than a live scenario, because you have the studio quality… we spend a good amount of time at the start sound checking and doing test

COUNCIL AT WORK ‘Retail Recovery’ campaign to boost Orange’s business community s Orange produces around 42 tonnes of recyclables per day. Let’s work together to try to use less single use plastic items.
Orange City Council invites local community to join the war on waste this Plastic Free July As Plastic Free July launches its 10th year of fighting the war against single-use plastics, residents in Orange can learn more about how to take part in the month-long challenge, or take inspiration from local waste champions. Orange City Council is taking an active interest in Plastic Free July, by showcasing the efforts of local stores and waste champions to discover if they can live without plastic for a month. Council will also be highlighting the journey of waste in Orange, from the moment it is placed in the bin, and beyond. Videos posted on Council’s Facebook page/website each week during July will detail these processes and encourage local residents to make simple switches to cut down on single-use plastics. Council’s Facebook page will also feature a range of Plastic Free July-related resources throughout the month, from documentary recommendations and waste-free recipes, to Plastic Free July success stories and an at-home waste audit tool. Orange Mayor Reg Kidd has welcomed the annual campaign. “Plastic Free July is a great way to get residents talking about how we can reduce our waste, and there are so many people in our community already doing great things in this regard,” Cr Kidd said. Orange City Council’s Environmental Sustainability Committee chair Cr Mario Previtera said he looks forward to seeing members of the community make the most of the month long challenge. “I encourage the local community to get involved by either taking up the Plastic Free July challenge, or keeping an ear to the ground during this time to see what our local waste heroes are doing, and consider what steps your household can take towards promoting a more sustainable future.” Started in Perth in 2010, Plastic Free July is a globally popular sustainability-focused initiative, encouraging people around the world to think about their attitude towards plastic use, particularly single-use plastics, and find sustainable alternatives. For more information head to the Plastic Free July website - https://www. plasticfreejuly.org/
Orange City Council has launched a plan to kick-start the retail sector of the local business community by giving away one thousand $50 gift cards to local residents. Launching the ‘Orange City Council Retail Recovery’ campaign, Mayor Reg Kidd said local residents can go in the draw to win gift cards by entering a coupon from a local newspaper or by entering online. “We know our local retailers have been doing it tough during the pandemic,” Cr Reg Kidd said. “Local residents are very loyal to the Orange business community, so this campaign will make it easier for them to spend in a local store.” “Now’s the time for residents to get their entries in. For the next five weeks, we’ll be doing a draw every week. Each week will be giving two hundred winners a $50 Shop Orange gift card to spend at a local participating business.” “We want this money to be spent before the end of September, so these dollars can get circulating in the economy as soon as possible.” Orange City Council Employment and Economic Development Committee chair, Cr Tony Mileto believes the ‘Retail Recovery’ campaign will be a great way to help local businesses. “When someone uses one of these cards at a local store, it’s very likely they’ll be topping it up to buy something that’s worth more than fifty dollars,” Cr Tony Mileto said. “That’s going to increase the value of the Council’s spending.” “$50,000 is only a fraction of the revenue that’s spent at local stores in a year, but it all helps. It could tip the balance that will let someone make perhaps their first visit to a local store since the pandemic close-down.” Full terms & conditions for the campaign can be found on the YourSay site. https://yoursay.orange.nsw.gov.au/retail-recovery

There are effectively two separate competitions, one using printed entry forms and one using online entries. The entry forms can be found in the Wednesday and Thursday editions of the Central Western Daily, as well as in each edition of Orange City LIFE and Newswatch. As well as local newspapers, the printed entry forms can be found at the Civic Centre and the Orange Visitors Centre. After the weekly draw, the printed forms from the previous week will be discarded, so residents can enter again with a new form for a draw in the following week. Online entries can be made by visiting the YourSay Orange website. To make it as fair as we can, someone will need to register with an active email address to enter the online draw. The draw of the online entries each week will include entries in previous weeks.
Tourism boost as visitors flock to Orange in the midst of COVID-19 restrictions Orange has experienced a surge in visitors in recent weeks as Sydneysiders explore new destinations amid COVID-19 travel restrictions, and the trend is set to continue as NSW heads into the school holidays. The influx comes on the back of a flood of coverage about Orange in metropolitan media, from lifestyle and travel magazines to current affairs programs, websites, blogs and podcasts, including Country Style and Luxury Travel magazines, and television programs, Weekend Today and ABC Backroads. The Orange Visitor Information Centre recorded a 75 per cent increase in patronage on Saturday, June 27, compared to 2019, with 510 people coming through the doors, which contributed to a 49 per cent increase overall for the weekend compared to last year. International travel bans and the closure of state borders means travellers are looking to visit places closer to home and Orange Mayor, Reg Kidd, says the city is on many people’s bucket lists. “We’ve had a lot of first-time visitors. People who may have been thinking of coming for a while have finally taken the opportunity to see what Orange has to offer,” Cr Reg Kidd said. Traffic on the Orange360 website has steadily increased since the Covid-19 lockdown began, from a weekly average

Orange360 general manager Caddie Marshall said it paid off, with many local accommodation providers booked out until September and October. “From the long weekend, the first weekend people were able to travel, we had 100 per cent occupancy across Orange and many of the surrounding villages. There were strong numbers and strong forward bookings,” she said. The live chat is managed by Orange Visitor Information Centre staff and operates during business hours.

GRAB YOUR POPCORN AND GET SEATED FOR A NIGHT AT THE MOVIES! It’s been a long time between sessions for lovers of the silver screen, but the good news is Orange’s Odeon 5 Cinema is set to reopen for business next week.
“It has been quite difficult,” said Odeon 5 Manager Helen McBurnie of the forced shutdown of the past four months. The government mandated closure of cinemas was officially lifted last week on July 1, but the real challenge, said Helen, has been confirming just what they would be showing once they reopened. “The distributors have been holding or moving content every day, so that has been the difficulty,” she said. With most international markets still affected by limitations on public gatherings, it has forced distributors to postpone the release of some movies until they can guarantee a better financial return. “And that is why cinemas haven’t or aren’t opening until later. Even for when we open on July 16th we had things lined up that have now moved to the 30th and
beyond,” said Helen. “A lot of the big blockbusters are being held over, because they’re the ones that bring the big return. When you are effectively losing the American, Chinese and Korean markets, which are huge, they are really hard decisions for them to make. “But there is still content coming through, and we will be running all new product, not bring back old stuff. But when the Odeon 5 reopens next Thursday, things will run a little differently. “We’ll only be open Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and we’ll be doing limited session per day — a maximum of four at the moment in each cinema,” said Helen. “We have new social distancing procedures, all staff have done infection control training, we will be doing

numbered seating, bubble seating they’re calling it, to allow gaps between people.” Between sessions, extra time has been allowed to use a fogging disinfectant to clean the cinema. And similar procedures are in place to clean and disinfect the foyer and toilets on a regular basis. The new seating arrangements will limit the cinemas to approximately 25 per cent of their full capacity. “We would definitely encourage online bookings, it is definitely going to be the way of the future. That’s not to say we still won’t take bookings over the counter, we will, but with the limited amount of seating available, people are going to want to book,” said Helen. Upcoming movies and session times can be found on the Odeon 5 website (www.odeon5.com.au) and regular updates are provided on their Facebook page.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT CADIA OCLife
Refurbished tablets and laptops support Designing Futures Program
Wayne Sunderland, Central NSW Business HQ, Alison Farrar, Newcrest Mining and David Stojanov, owner of the Freemason’s Hotel.
Newcrest’s Business Beyond the Curve Program Nile Street Café and Freemason’s Hotel have been successful in receiving restart grants through Newcrest’s Business Beyond the Curve Program, which aims to support local businesses that have been impacted by COVID-19. • Nile Street Café was closed from 22 March to 3 June due to COVID-19 restrictions and was not able to offer takeaway services during this time. The Café lost stock due to the sudden shutdown, as well as facing ongoing bills while they were not earning any income.
Cadia has donated four refurbished laptops and 21 Samsung tablets to support the Orange Local Aboriginal Land Council’s Designing Futures program. The Designing Futures program works with young Indigenous people to keep them engaged in school and assist in their plans for future employment. The laptops and tablets will be used towards supporting homework and study through this program.
While Nile Street Café is glad to see business picking up, the grant will go towards bills and the restock of food. • The Freemason’s Hotel in Molong was required to shut on 24 March due to COVID-19 restrictions, which was devastating as they had just restructured their business due to impacts from the drought. The hotel continued to operate a takeaway window to keep the business going until it reopened on 15 June. The grant will be used towards paying essential bills.

Cadia donates big for Salvos Digital Door Knock
s Tim Thornhill, representing Cadia Valley Operations, with local Salvation Officer Kate Cathcart.
— JONATHAN ROE —
Cadia Valley Operations dug a little deeper this year, donating an extra $5,000 towards the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal.
Like so many other events this year, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the Salvos to cancel their annual door knock fundraiser, moving the Red Shield Appeal online. But without the army of volunteers going door to door, the Salvos were expecting a shortfall in funds, particularly tragic since the pandemic has only increased the hardship of Australians who were already experiencing homelessness, unemployment, and domestic violence. Given the situation, Cadia decided to more than triple their usual donation to the Salvos this year. “We have been a longstanding supporter of the Salvation Army, typically donating $2,000 each year towards the Red Shield Appeal,
as well as supporting the Christmas Toy Drive,” said Cadia Acting General Manager, Aaron Brannigan. “Due to the impact of COVID-19 on this year’s doorknock campaign, we decided to provide an additional $5,000 to support the vital work of the Salvation Army in our local community.” The donation of $7,000 towards the 2020 Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal came from Cadia’s COVID-19 Community Support Fund. The appeal may have ended but you can still donate to the Salvos and help Australian in need. Visit digitaldoorknock.salvationarmy.org.au/donate

HistoryTALKING
with HELEN McANULTY
I HAD WRITTEN HIM A LETTER WHICH I HAD, FOR WANT OF BETTER KNOWLEDGE, SENT TO WHERE I KNEW HIM, ON THE LACHLAN YEARS AGO. HE WAS SHEARING WHEN I KNEW HIM, AND I SENT THE LETTER TO HIM, JUST ON SPEC, ADDRESSED AS FOLLOWS: ‘CLANCY OF THE OVERFLOW.’ Clancy didn’t get that letter because he was “droving down the Cooper” but at least it reached his shearing mate who was able to write back “with a thumbnail dipped in tar.” These days, in our world of phone and internet, we can be constantly in touch with almost everyone no matter how near or far they may be. In our present Covid isolation it has enabled people to work at home and to keep closely in touch with others who have been social-distancing. Before the invention of the telephone it was quite a different matter. Mailmen and their city counterparts, postmen, often went to unbelievable trouble to track down the recipient of the letters they were employed to deliver. When the First Fleet sailed into Sydney Harbour those on board knew that there was only one way they would be able to make contact with England and this was to send messages by ship. It took many months for a letter to reach its destination and, of course, a reply would take as long. Instructions sent by the British government to Governor Phillip would sometimes arrive a couple of years after the event, which must have been frustrating for all those concerned. Before 1810 there was no regular postal service in the colony. But on 1st September of that year Governor Macquarie issued an order designating the house of one Isaac Nicholls as the first regular post office. Sixty four years later the General Post Office was opened in Martin Place and provisions for the regulation of postal services, including the rates for postage, were made. In those far off days the cost of postage was an enviable one penny. The stamp was locally produced and depicted scenes of Sydney Harbour.
Before we could communicate by letter though, we had to learn to write. In those far-off unenlightened days of our youth, children were all made to write with their right hand, the theory being that life would be easier for them in a predominantly right handed world. This was obviously no problem for Dick who became ambidextrous. “We learned to write properly using a slope card which was alright except that I couldn’t spell,” he said. Writing lessons were very structured with drill in the way to sit and to hold a pen. Most of us learned to write using a pen with a nib dipped in ink. The ink, by the way, was a great source of pleasure to many children with a mischievous bent. It was contained in a little pot at the top of a shared desk and was handy for those sitting in the desk directly behind the girl with the long plaits. She often found to her distress that the ends of her hair had turned blue. “The ink could be messy,” said Pat. “But I think the nib made it easier to write properly.” Of course, with all the care and time we were able to spend on our writing, most of us found that by the time we started work or reached tertiary education and were forced to take notes, our writing often became an indecipherable scribble. If we wanted to send letters it was also necessary to know the correct way to express ourselves. “Letter writing forced me to learn spelling and grammar, “Leslye told us. And I found out early that if I wanted to get letters I had to write them.” Some of our group had pen pals from all over the world which, in the days before mobile phones, FaceTime, Facebook and texting, enabled some of us to get acquainted with people from other countries and cultures. These friendships were often fostered by papers and magazines. John, who came to Australia with his family from England in the 1960s, wrote air letters back to his mother for quite a few years, telling her all about the new country. “I’ve regretted ever since that I gave my brother permission to throw them out after my mother died, as it was a great source of information of how we felt and what we did at that time.” “My father-law wrote letters and kept a diary while

he was on the Western Front in the First World War and it was in the most beautiful copper plate writing,” Joan told us. We all agreed that, without the letters written by our early settlers and our servicemen from the World Wars, history would be the poorer. In fact, we wondered, how much history will be recorded for posterity in emails and texts. But when it came down to sheer heroism and determination to see that the mail got through, we had to hand it to a recent member of our group. His wife, told the story: “We were living on a property in Queensland in a very wet year during which we had ninety inches of rain. I had written all my letters and cards to absent friends just before Christmas and they were ready to be put in the mailbox for collection the next day. That night we had another twelve inches and woke to find we were marooned in an ocean of flood water. “I was heavily pregnant and became quite hysterical at the thought of my mail not getting through. Desperate to calm me down, my husband who was a strong swimmer, offered to swim out across the water to put them in the box. We wrapped the letters carefully in plastic and tied the package firmly at the top. He took it in his teeth to keep it from getting wet and plunged into the muddy brown water to swim the three kilometres to the mailbox. “Because of the very strong current he decided to go from tree to tree but, to his horror found that each one was full snakes seeking shelter, so he was forced to go back to the safety of the house. “The neighbours came to the rescue with a boat when the water had receded a little the next day. All the letters were delivered but our friends told us later that they wondered why there were distinct toothmarks on the envelopes.” Copyright: Helen McAnulty. June 2020

Helping Orange seniors stay connected during isolation — MELISE COLEMAN —
Do you know a senior resident in the community who has been feeling the effects of isolation?
Orange City Council are encouraging Orange seniors to put their hand up for a free, monthly, home delivered program designed to battle the social challenges posed by COVID-19. Connect-a-Kit is the latest tool launched by Council to help seniors stay in touch with each other, keep fit and to challenge the mind. Orange Mayor Reg Kidd said the Connect-a-Kit program, funded by the NSW Government, was a great way for older residents to battle the blues during this difficult time. “Orange seniors may be more vulnerable to illness, and so it’s important we all take the necessary precautions to keep our most vulnerable
people safe,” Cr Kidd said. “In many cases this means limiting the amount of social contact older residents have with others. Connect-a-Kit is a program, delivered monthly, directly to the doors of Orange seniors who register for the program. Numbers of the kits are limited, so interested residents are encouraged to apply promptly. Orange City Council’s Services Committee Chair Scott Munro said the program included a range of activities such as letter writing, model building, interactive exercises and sharing oral history. “The program is different every month and

includes links to online video groups, arts and crafts, and opportunities to interact with others,” Cr Munro said. “These broad activities ensure that the kit caters to seniors with a range of interests, both with and without internet access. “Orange residents who are aged 65 and over, or 55 if Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, can participate in the Connect-a-Kit program. All instructions will be provided, and you can contact the project team if you need support with the kit.” Contact Council on 6393 8600 or email jproctor@ orange.nsw.gov.au to register.

THUMBS DOWN to the local hotel that refused to take dinner bookings. First in first served is a ridiculous way to manage numbers during COVID. We ended up spending our money out of town and the hospitality was wonderful. THUMBS UP to Springhill Hotel. Great meals and wonderful hosts. We’ll eat there more often. A HUGE THUMBS UP to Dr Lauren Auteri for her very professional and caring approach to my health needs. Given the stressful times we are in at the moment, such care is truly appreciated and I believe she is a great credit to Prince Street Medical. BIG THUMBS UP to the Wangarang lawn mowing team. Our lawns at Inala units in Millthorpe have never looked better. Thanks fellas, great job.
A BIG THUMBS DOWN to the people who have left their litter – dog droppings, take away cups, lolly raps and used tissues in and around the Botanical Gardens. We all KNOW better, we all now need to continue to DO better!!! THUMBS DOWN to Orange City Council for tarring both access points to the Botanic Gardens on Monday. After taking my grandson to the playground I was stopped (along with lots of other cars) for some time while the exit and entrance were finished. Surely, they could have done one side at a time and completely finished it before starting on the other side. Great look for the tourists who were also stopped from getting in and out. THUMBS UP to the lovely man who stopped to help the galah that flew in front of my car in Bowen on Sunday afternoon. Despite my offers to take the poor creature to the vet or WIRES, he insisted on taking the bird himself, having been a carer for injured animals himself for years. I felt guilty but grateful to leave the poor thing in such capable hands. THUMBS UP to the person who returned a bag of groceries that we recently left hanging on a trolley in Woolworths carpark. Thank you! A BIG THUMBS UP to the team at LA Wardrobes for their expert advice, quote, and the fabulous finished product. We are the happy recipients of two fabulous new wardrobes. THUMBS UP to Tilstons Electricians for their continual great service. Their work is excellent, and they always arrive on time and get everything done with smiles on their faces.
THUMBS UP and thankyou to young tiler Tarren who did a great job tiling our new kitchen backsplash, it looks amazing and nothing was too much trouble. TWO THUMBS UP to Orange Hospital. I recently had day surgery and from the admission office lady to every nurse, Doctor Tang’s team to the nurse that walked me out of recovery, thank every one of you wonderful and caring people. THUMBS UP to the fantastic team at Orange Hospital Paediatric Clinic. We know how busy they are seeing kids from such a large area and smaller outlying towns, but they do so well managing those that really need to be seen. Thanks for being such a great team, not only clinical staff but admin as well. THUMBS UP to Orange City Council staff and contractor for the great footpath along Forest Road to the hospital. THUMBS DOWN to the two blokes riding their horses on the new footpath on Forest Road who left manure everywhere. THUMBS UP to the council and the volunteers of the Botanical Gardens. We paid a visit there on the weekend and it was such a pleasure to be in the gardens that are so well taken care of. All the hard work does not go unnoticed. THUMBS DOWN to OCL for not putting the number of letters next to the crossword hints. (The crosswords come packaged from a third party, we don’t make them up here – Ed.)
