hat was originally a 16-acre hobby farm - and surprisingly, out of town the Orange community got behind the idea of creating a botanic garden, particularly for education opportunities. The Friends of the Orange Botanic Gardens (FOBG) was formed in 1985 and with the help of Council and many-a volunteer, it has become what it is today, a central hub for our green thumbs. Susan Sanders was a Pharmacist living in England, before moving to Australia where she then studied to become a Horticulturist. “I wanted to get involved with helping propagation and I thought FOBG would be very interesting in my line of work, so I worked and volunteered my time as well,” said Susan. Time flies when you’re having fun, Susan has now been a ‘Friend’ for over 20 years now and has taken on the role of President. “My Father and Grandfather were green thumbs, I think they may have inspired me to some degree. I can remember when I was a little girl, we had a big garden but that was only for trees and flowers, my Father wanted a vegetable

garden, so he hired a lot across the road from where we lived, I used to go over there with my dolly and pram and pick the rhubarb and the peas and anything I could find,” Susan laughed. “I used to have a Vineyard on Mount Canobolas, with a big garden. Now I’m in town with a small garden. Despite the size, it’s a place of reflection and it keeps me busy. You never know what’s going to pop up as little bulbs appear, it’s lovely to see. It attracts the bees, it attracts the birds. What more could you want?” Susan smiled. "Clematis are my favourite flower, they area climber and they prefer a cool climate, but like the sun at the top. I would have to say Autumn is my favourite season, it’s a more settled period, the colours are beautiful. Spring can be very erratic I find, it can be stormy and cruel." Susan added, “Now that I’m retired, FOBG is a real social outlet for me. We are doing a good job here, we have a sale twice a year (this year we had to cancel) and we raise money for projects in the gardens to enhance the beauty of the gardens. We have a good time, we all get on together, we have delicious morning teas, and excitingly we’ve just extended our shed, which we’ve tried to modernise. "We’ve had to keep the gardens going

throughout COVID-19, the plants need to be watered, so with 15 volunteers at the moment, we created a roster so people come in on different days. We are nearly all retired but we do get the odd person who’s working and comes in on their day off, though anyone is welcome to come along, there are no age restrictions. "A usual day for us can include anything from taking cuttings, sowing seeds, using the ‘hot house’ for propagation and then get them ready for the next sale.

Susan’s Gardening tip: Don’t be too adventurous, grow something you love. Depending on what the winter is like, unless we go through a very, very dry period, hold back on the watering otherwise you will rot the roots.

"The propagating team actually recently donated a large number of native plants to the Central West Landcare group who then distributed them to Farmers in need. Due to the severe drought conditions, many plants had been lost as farmers were unable to keep the water up to the plants.” Having donated a fountain, seats and native plants to the Botanic Gardens in the past, the FOBG look forward to their next donation edition. DRIVER WANTED! Who thinks it would be great if as a community, we could come up with a simple yet beneficial community project that those who choose to, could play a part in? My thoughts go back to the way the community came together to build the Adventure Playground near the Botanic Garden, and likewise with the building of Ronald McDonald House. Despite any setbacks, opposition, controversy, or anything else, these projects and others became a reality that thousands and thousands of people now enjoy and benefit from. Such achievements make us feel good, they make us feel part of something worthwhile and they bring us together as a community. We seem to have lost that. We haven’t lost the willingness to give or support causes, Australians are probably giving more than ever to the myriad of charities, causes and needs that we’re asked to support now, but what I’m talking about are those community projects that leave lasting benefits for a community to enjoy, like the Adventure Playground. In the past, service clubs like Rotary or Lions have often been the driving forces behind such projects and I’m sure that all over Orange there is evidence of this, the disabled swing at the Adventure Playground is one example that comes to mind, the Rotary Park lookout near the top of Dalton Street is another. Service clubs have historically been right at the forefront of many community projects but like so many things, an ageing membership and so much red tape to do anything now, seems to have dulled their willingness and enthusiasm to undertake anything too significant. My guess is it may be a case of the spirit is willing, but the

It wasn’t a Lake Louise experience without jumping in the canoe and paddling as far as we could. As you paddled closer to the snow-capped mountain in the distance, the temperature plummeted considerably so it was safe to say it was a quick ‘sit’ before we paddled back closer to shore admiring the light, calm turquoise water below us. An incredible experience as we were surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery.”

red tape isn’t. I think it’s fair to say that we’ve probably missed out on any number of wonderful projects or initiatives in Orange simply because the times now make it almost impossible to do anything without a hell of a lot of drama, red tape etc. I could go on but I’m sure that would just bore you no end. My questions therefore are - Isn’t it time we changed that? Do we want to? Can we as a community, take charge and do something good, despite how the world operates today? If we were able to start something, would you be willing to help us finish it in a sensible timely manner and well before hell freezes over? I’m certainly up for the challenge but I need help. Ideally, I need a service club or a group of service clubs to drive an idea that I have for the Botanic Garden. It’s a simple and straight-forward idea that will add great value to the Gardens and provide local families and visitors with a good deal of amusement and pleasure in this wonderful but underappreciated facility. I would love to share my idea with representatives from one or more local service clubs, either independently or as a guest speaker at one of their meetings. Any club willing to do that can contact me at the OC Life office 6361 3575 or reception@ oclife.com.au For the record I have had preliminary discussions with the Council about my idea, and they assure me that they have no problems with the idea in principal at this stage. Please, let’s not see another good idea just die through lack of interest or without a reasonable evaluation, we’re better than that, aren’t we?

Have you discovered a newfound love for walking since lockdown? Now that’s the Heart Foundation Walking group are beginning to kick off again, why not walk for a great cause? In a recent Heart Foundation survey of 300 people, around 30 per cent said they had been walking more since COVID-19 restrictions came into effect. Of those, 45 per cent took walks by themselves, 33 per cent with their partner and 22 per cent with their pets. “When gyms and organised sport shut down

due to the pandemic, walking became one of the few options for Australians to stay active,” said Heart Foundation Director of Active Living, Adjunct Professor Trevor Shilton. “Large numbers of us discovered or even rediscovered the joys of walking around the neighbourhood with their family and pets.”

It’s a really simple and pleasant way to get your recommended 30 minutes of brisk physical activity each day.” Locals Brooke Tonkin and Helen Mitchell have become dedicated walkers since the pandemic hit often using their lunchbreaks to enjoy the exercise. Brooke explained, “Because I couldn’t get to the gym I really wanted to get moving again, lunch breaks were the best time to do it, it was great to be getting out of the office and getting some fresh air and clearing your head. FEDERAL MEMBER FOR CALARE PROPOSED EDUCATION REFORMS The Nationals Party Room, being separate from the Liberals, will determine its position on last week's education announcement only after: •

Only then will we make a call on how we will proceed. On another note, with regard to CSU, I am still very keen to see an independent, external audit carried out so everyone in the community knows where the vital country institution stands. I'm a big supporter of CSU and that's why I think an audit would help clear up a lot of concern about it's future.

NEW LAWS ON SEXUAL CRIMES AGAINST CHILDREN No group in our community is more deserving of our protection than our children and for a long time the Australian Government has been working on laws to crack down on child sex offenders. It was good to see Labor finally agreeing to support the Government's new Bill in relation this, in it's entirety last week, although it was disappointing that it took an angry public back lash to get them to reverse their opposition to mandatory minimum sentences.

The new Bill will vastly improve justice outcomes and community safety: •

Mandatory minimum sentences for serious child sex offences and for recidivist offenders

•

A presumption against bail for serious and repeat offenders to keep them off the streets

•

Increased maximum penalties across the spectrum of child sex offences, including up to life imprisonment for the most serious offences

•

Presumptions in favour of cumulative sentences and actual imprisonment

•

Ensuring that all sex offenders, upon release from custody, are adequately supervised and subject to appropriate rehabilitative conditions

•

Preventing courts from discounting sentences on the basis of good character where this is used to facilitate the crime.

$5 MILLION FUND FOR BUSHFIREAFFECTED WINE GROWERS As our communities battle to overcome the effects of drought, bushfires and now COVID-19, new Australian Government initiatives for the forestry industry, apple and wine growers are set to accelerate economic recovery and ultimately deliver more jobs to the region. The initiatives include a $5 million fund for grants up to $10,000, matched by a co-contribution, for wine grape producers who experienced crop loss because of smoke taint from the Black Summer bushfires in wine regions that aren't currently activated for the $75,000 primary producer grants. There is also a $31 million fund for grants of $120,000 per hectare for bushfire impacted apple growers. This program complements the support provided by the NSW Government. Your Country Your Voice BIG WIN FOR SPORTS WOMEN IN BLAYNEY Sports women of Blayney have won big with separate female changerooms to be built (for the first time) at King George Oval, thanks to $750,000 from the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund.

Having new and separate changerooms means netballers from the adjacent courts and many athletes across the sporting codes will benefit from these upgrades to King George Oval, as will visiting teams.

Blokes will also reap the rewards with new men’s changerooms also being funded by this grant.

The project will also bring much-needed work for tradies as the community recovers from drought and the impacts of COVID-19. Well done Blayney!

A TRIBUTE TO BELMO

Last week in Parliament, I paid tribute to Orange's tenpin bowling legend, Jason Belmonte, or Belmo, as his friends call him.

Jason is one of the best ten pin bowlers Australia, and the world, has ever seen. He has shattered records, with a total of 24 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) victories, including 13 major championships and 11 further titles. With stellar performances in 2019, he capped off 2019 with a 5th PBA Player of the Year award. Belmo has a famous, trademark two-handed technique, which evolved from the fact that he was so little when he first started bowling that he needed two hands to do it! This year, Jason is donating $50 for every strike that he throws in televised matches in 2020, and $100 for strikes in championship matches, to the RedCross bushfire relief fund. As he said, "So many people and animals have been effected and they need all the help they can get."

GENEROSITY HAS A GOLDEN IMPACT DURING PANDEMIC The Orange Health Service is grateful to Newcrest Mining Cadia Valley Operations, for the very generous donation of almost $17 000.

Orange Health Service General Manager, Catherine Nowlan, said, “The money has been used to purchase protective equipment. “This equipment will be worn by clinical staff during procedures to enable clinicians to safely preform procedures such as intubation of patients ensuring limited exposure for staff to droplet infection”, Catherine said. When staff are required to work with patients who are COVID-19 positive or COVID- 19 symptomatic the Clinical Excellence Commission (CEC) guidelines prescribe the safe working practices required using of Personal Protective Equipment.

“We would like to thank Cadia for their generous donation enabling us to purchase the equipment and also the donations of meals for our staff working in the respiratory/COVID-19 ward. CENTRAL WEST HERITAGE RAIL

While to coronavirus lockdown has stopped the Lachlan Valley Railway operating their trains, there has been plenty going on behind the scenes and 2020 will mark a new beginning for heritage rail in the central west.

“It has actually been a good time for the Society, I guess. It has given us time to pay attention to the things that usually stay on the backburner,” said Lachlan Valley Railways Director Ross Jackson. Just last week the LVR announced that two of their historic R passenger cars at the Cowra depot have been fully restored. The passenger cars date back to 1890 and 1903 and are now ready to be put into service on the soon-to-be-complete Cowra Tourist Railway. The Cowra depot was cut off from the rail network when the branch line was closed in 2009, but LVR volunteers are working to reopen a 6-kilometre portion of the track, from Cowra to Holmwood, as a tourist attraction. On Monday, volunteers began laying new sleepers on the track to their ‘top shed’ in order to get two more passenger cars out of storage and ready for

service once more. “Since the branch line was originally closed back in 2009 it was always the intention to get Cowra restarted,” said Ross. “Once we get those four cars together, I think we’ll have the branch line set and hopefully by then we will be close to getting ‘Rosie’ — which is our steam train — fixed and back into service. “And then, I’d say we’d run every weekend — that’s the plan, but we’ll test the waters and see how we go… One day we would like to get to Woodstock, which is a further 12 kilometres, but let’s start small and make sure it is viable and push on after that.” Since the Cowra depot closed, LVR has been without a full-time home and their rolling stock is spread across the state. “We’ve been floating around other depots in NSW since then and never really had a full -time home

base. Some of our fleet at the moment is in Orange, some of it is in Sydney and we don’t really have a home, but that will be changing when we get Orange online later this year,” said Ross. Volunteers have also been hard at work laying new sleepers at East Fork. Once complete it will be the new centre of operations for LVR. “The volunteers have been absolutely fantastic through all this and we have had people come out of the woodwork to help us in areas we have never seen people come out and help us before. “And Orange is a great place to be. It is perfect for access to the central west and there is a brilliant corridor I see; you’ve got the new museum at Bathurst, you’ve got Zig Zag Railway at the other end and then Oberon-Tarana Railway as well. Hopefully, one day, we can find a solution to join them all together.”

“I fell into it by chance,” said Tony Healey as to how he came to work at Orange’s 2EL Radio Station. “They were looking for another person and I was looking for a job at the time. I came in and there I was. I got it. That was 17 years ago.” Tony has had more than a few jobs in his time. On leaving school, he also left the Country for England, where he spent five years managing an electrical goods store in between travelling the continent. On his return, he worked for David Jones, a Farmers Cooperative in Wangarata, then moved to Orange to take a job as the administration manager with Grace Brothers.

“Then I left and worked in the Ag Department in personnel and then I had two service stations here in Orange, but they were closing them down and I came in here. I was brought in as a salesperson and then people left and I’ve been manager for 16 years.” Founded in 1935 (originally as 2GZ), today 2EL is part of Bill Caralis’ Broadcast Operations Group. “There’s 47 other stations in the network. Close to us, we’ve got Bathurst, Mudgee, Dubbo, Parkes, and Young, that all belong to the same networks.”

As manager, Tony had to learn his way around the sounds desk, and while he does the odd interview from time to time, he leaves the on-air work to others. Selling, writing and creating advertisements is a big part of Tony’s role, as is pitching it to just the right audience. “You’ve got to do your background work with the customer, because they might say I only listen to X, but their customers don’t,” he said. “So, then you’ve got to find out who they listen to or when. If you are selling sportswear maybe John Laws in the morning is not where

Nancy Says… a special Words of Wisdom edition — MELISE COLEMAN —

The OC Life family is very fond of Nancy Lodge. An avid writer to the magazine. Nancy wrote to us expressing a range of frustrations over people losing their way on certain issues. We thought we would share some of her thoughts, here’s what she had to say:

SORE TIRED PAINFUL FEET?

Where were you born? Sydney. If you could describe your life in one sentence what would it be? I’d say versatile. What are the most important lessons you’ve learned in life? *Points to tongue* To keep my tongue quiet. *laughs* What were your hobbies/interests growing up? Certainly gardening, I grew up in a gardening situation where my Dad had a lot of interest in it. We lived at a property called Tantallon and it had many beautiful gardens on it. What was your naughtiest moment as a child? I said to my Mum one day, ‘Why did you send me to boarding school at such a young age?’ she said, ‘because you were naughty!’ *laughs* We used to have rubber fly swats with metal handles, they used to smack us with those. I used to take them and put them between the tank stand and the cement, in recent years there must have been a nice little lot there... *laughs* What was your first job? Nursing, I was doing my nursing training as the war was happening. If it had lasted a few weeks longer I would have been going. I remember we used to have living quarters for the Nurses and on the second floor there were a lot of American Nurses living there and they all had these beautiful silk stockings... oh we were so jealous. *laughs* When you finished your training you then got thrown into the hospital pond *laughs* I don’t know why, it was just a tradition. I did Nursing for years, my Husband then had a bad injury and I realised I couldn’t work Nursing and work the land. So, I’d grow the plants at home, take them into town once a week and the Western Stores used to sell them for me. My husband had cattle and sheep, a milking cow, when the children came along we realised they were both allergic to cow’s milk so we brought a goat named Penny, it was just as mischievous as I was. *laughs* What is your favourite memory? Oh I have so many... I think perhaps my Mum and Dad. My wedding, my two children, oh all of them *laughs* just family. What are you most proud of? I don’t know about proud, but I’ve spent my life working for the Scleroderma Association. My daughter had Scleroderma and it was undiagnosed for a long time. She worked hard to be involved and fought for others as well as herself. She also had very bad treatment with NDIS.

What will be the first thing you do when restrictions are lifted? I haven’t been out until a couple of days ago. I was taken for a drive by a friend and we went all around the outside of the city, I saw all of the beautiful trees and the water coming over the spillway! It was such a lovely outing. I adore Orange. The ability that we’ve had to grow. How has the world changed from when you were a child? Living out in the country kept us away from a lot of the problems, but then again, there weren’t that many problems back then. When we would bring our horses into town the Police used to come up and say, have you looked after your pony today? Have you fed them and given them a drink? They were just like our parents in a way... It was a different world altogether. My best friend passed last year but during our lives we’ve always been able to talk to one another about our problems and if you had a problem you’d be able to get good, sound advice, and that’s not that easy to get these days.

Nancy says;

- As an oldie, it has not been easy to keep up with a virtually changed world and I don’ t seem to have made much of a job of it. I haven’t caug ht up with Facebook. - I think we should be praying as a nati on. I asked for prayer from our council before East er and I didn’t hear back from anyone. I haven’t know n where to move with it to get someone who is qualified to get up and lead the community into prayer. I just think it is a more complex request that we’ve had in the past. But I can remember the end of Wor ld War II when the stressful times we had in between, we as a nation would go to prayer. - I’m interested in the Ratepayers and Resident’s Association. It stresses me that our com munity is so reluctant in so many areas to ensu re we have a vital Local Government Council. So, if people cannot bother to see the right people reach Council Chambers, then I guess we get what we deserve. - Mount Canobolas, the area has dete riorated in recent years, people love it, they love to visit it, go up there for a number of reasons; a view of the city and it’s fun when it snows, people like to take their meals up there. I think it would be nice if we could see a way of financing those things.

“I am still dodging bullets... a few came impossibly close yesterday you hear the shell coming miles off like the wail of a lost spirit.. such a delightful moaning screech... you can generally tell whether it’s coming close and, acting on your own discretion, you duck, the lower the better. It is truly wonderful how low a man can sink in those circumstances... just a second of uncertainty and the scream falls to a sob and with a rending crash, the shell bursts.

HARD TIMES

IT WAS 1916 AND IN THREE YEARS AN UNSUSPECTING WORLD WOULD BE THROWN INTO THE CHAOS OF THE SPANISH FLU PANDEMIC.

But there was already chaos in Europe where war of horrifying proportions had been waging for two years and young Australians were volunteering in large numbers to help in a conflict on the other side of the globe. Leonard Crockett, Alf Mead and Arnold Caldwell had been schoolmates at East Orange school and were no doubt excited by the idea of overseas travel when they left Australia on the steamship Marathon on 31st October 1916. They had just completed their training with the Fifth Division of Engineers known as Sappers, which was part of the Fifth Division of the AIF and were on their way to join Allied forces fighting in France. Sapper Caldwell wrote letters to his parents, Mr and Mrs A.T. Caldwell of the Public School, Orange East and these were published in the Orange Leader newspaper during the final years of the war. Arnold was a draughtsman in the Orange Lands Office and a keen observer with an ability to express his thoughts and experiences in his numerous letters. On reaching England the Engineers were first camped on the Salisbury Plains in Wiltshire. It was January and ice and snow lay on the ground when he wrote his first letter home. “The eternal cold is a nuisance and makes it hard to get comfortable but, in my opinion, it isn’t as bad as the cold in Orange in winter!” By May he was a few miles behind the lines in France when he wrote again. “We have spent most of the time digging dugouts. We haven’t had any casualties yet, though I think there have been some very close calls. We are right amongst the big guns here. They get going about three in the morning and I’ve never heard anything like it. A night bombardment is like a lovely fireworks display—the flash and the bursting of shells with the red, green orange and white flares going up all the time.” He signed off with a word of comfort for his family: “Don’t worry about me. I reckon a man would be terribly unlucky to get hit.”

By 10th June summer had finally come to the battlefields of France and Arnold wrote again. “We are still having beautiful weather, the trees are bright green and looking across the fields are just wavy stretches of colour—buttercups and dandelions make them look like fields of gold, with poppies, daisies, forget-me-nots and a host of other colours. “But across them all run the long snake-like entanglements, the smashed trenches, the thousand shell holes, and here and there a little wooden cross of some soldier, Allied or German, which speaks silently and eloquently of the struggle which has passed over these selfsame fields of yellow. “And even if one could forget these things and miss out the torn and broken villages and ruined homes, the many crossed cemeteries and the prevailing devastation, there rises always the roar and thunder of the guns and the iron throated reminder that nations are at war.”

Nearly two months later he wrote again. “I am quite happy tonight as I have had quite a deluge of letters from Orange. The cards are beautiful and I’m glad they’re not the usual “gallant Anzac” style. The boys out here hate those things, not so much on account of modesty, but because it’s so hard to find all the glory and splendour that is supposed to be broadcast over the battle area. There is more mud than splendour and the only possibility of “glory” is going there at any moment!

I remember the first night I ever went into the Front Line. It wasn’t quite dark and I was wading knee deep in the mud. Suddenly I stumbled and took two steps on something hard and saw a pair of heels sticking out of the mud... I have become hardened since then.” On Friday May 3rd, 1918, Arnold’s parents received a cable telling them that their son had been gassed. Following his rehabilitation in England, he returned to France for the battles of the Hundred Days Offensive which finally broke the back of the German war effort. On 9th October he was enthusiastic. “I have just received a bosker parcel from the citizens of Orange, containing biscuits, coffee, cocoa, soup tablets, soap, chocolates, cigarettes, salmon and sardines.” Finally, on 11th November 1918 he wrote to his parents from Blangy, a village in Normandy. “About 12o’clock the Post Office put up a wire—the Armistice is signed and the whole village went mad all the afternoon... but our thoughts are with you. I guess there will be excitement there, though you won’t know the news for a few hours yet. It’s good to know at last that it is all over and there will be no new fighting.” The last report in The Leader was on Monday, 5th May 1919. “Sergeant Arnold Caldwell is on his way home to Australia on the Kildonian Castle. On the same ship are also Captain Bean, Australian official war correspondent and Major Banjo Paterson.” Arnold Cassin Caldwell was the second of five children born to Arnold and Mary Caldwell. His father was headmaster of the Public School, Orange East, from 1897 until 1931. After his return from the war he married Lila Oliver, his high school sweetheart, and continued to live in Orange with his young family until 1933. He had a distinguished career in the Public Service and died in 1972. He was my uncle. In August 1919 sixteen pin oak trees were planted in Newman Park by Mr A.T. Caldwell on behalf of the school in memory of the sixteen fallen students. In March that year the Spanish Flu pandemic arrived in Orange. Copyright: Helen McAnulty. June 2020.

TALKING CLASSIC MOVIES with Mal MacDonald:

WESTERNS — JONATHAN ROE —

These days it seems like online streaming service provide us with a near limitless choice of home entertainment, but for unique and hard-to-find movies and memorabilia there’s Mal MacDonald. His business REEL Memories has a catalogue of thousands of titles, many of which you will have trouble finding online or anywhere else. Orange City Life once again sat down with Mal, this time to talk classic westerns. O.K. Let’s saddle up and hit the dusty trails! So first, no one was more synonymous with western movies than the actor John Wayne. He made so many great films — and quite a few bad ones early ones in his career —the list is endless but we’ll cover just a few here. His career really starts off in 1939 with the classic John Ford directed Stagecoach. He’d done many prior to that, but Stagecoach really changed the Western genre and from this period on his whole career changed and he went on to be a major star. John Ford made some of his best films, like the Cavalry trilogy, which a lot of people would remember; Fort Apache being the first one in 1948 and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon 1949, and finally Rio Grande in 1950, but there were so many great Ford films. The Searcher is still a classed as a classic. It was a big colour production from John Ford in 1956 with John Wayne, Jeffrey Hunter Ward Bond, and a young Natalie Wood. It also had Patrick Wayne, John Wayne’s son, who was in a number of his films. In 1953, he made an interesting one for his own new production company called Hondo. It was originally shot in 3D and starred John Wayne and Geraldine Page, who was actually a stage actress, and this was her first screen appearance. It also had Australia’s own Michael Pate, who would go on about a decade later to be in another John Wayne western call McLintock. Wayne’s last film was in 1976 and he went out with a bang in that one because he had a lot of his friends, including actors James Stewart, Richard Boon (from the TV series Have Gun, Will Travel), Hugh O’Brien, who famously played Wyatt Earp, and Lauren Bacall. It also had a very Young Ron Howard and Harry Morgan, who people would remember as Colonel Potter in the series M.A.S.H. We’ll leave Wayne now and let’s fly back to a black and white 1952 film and one of the all-time classics High Noon. A real ‘good against evil’ story with Gary Cooper, Grace Kelly, and Lloyd Bridges, who was in numerous of westerns. In 1957 Burt Lancaster was in the famous Hollywood retelling of the Gunfight at O.K. Corral with Kirk Douglas and playing one of the Earp brothers was an actor DeForest Kelley, better known for playing Bones in the original Star Trek. Some of the things in the movie never actually happened, but it made for a good rollicking western! Now an actress that you wouldn’t normally find in a western, but she was quite good in this particular one was Marilyn

Monroe of all people. She starred in a colour production from 1954 River of No Return with Robert Mitchum and Rory Calhoun, also a well-known western star. Now Winchester 73 with James Stewart and Shelly Winters this was a 1950 gem of a western and it is one of my favourites. Also made in 1950 with James Stewart, Jeff Chandler and Debra Paget was a film called Broken Arrow. And this is notable for being a little more sympathetic towards the native American point of view. Now we get to a truly classic western from 1952 with Alan Ladd and this is Shane. This is a fondly remembered film for a lot of people; Alan Ladd, Jean Arthur, Van Heflin and Jack Palance, who had a long career in westerns and in the spaghetti westerns over in Italy.

Can you tell us more about the spaghetti westerns? Other countries shot westerns, but Italy of course was famous for what were known as Spaghetti Westerns. There were so many American actors who went over to Italy to star in western films and some you wouldn’t think, like William Shatner. The star that most people remember, that really kicked them off, is the Clint Eastwood and his character ‘The man with no name.’ Clint Eastwood was a big star on TV at the time in the series Rawhide and he was asked by director Sergio Leone to come over and do a series of westerns and they went to become famous: Fistful of Dollars, a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. These films brought about a change in Westerns, a bit more violence would creep into films, like in Nevada Smith a 1966 film with Steve McQueen. By the late ‘60s American westerns were losing favour and other big films and action blockbusters were coming along but that all changed in 1969 with Sam Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch, a classic western! Sam Peckinpah also made the western Adventure film Major Dundee with Charlton Cheston, Richard Harris and James Coburn. The Hunting party was released a couple of years after the Wild Bunch had come out and this was another quite violent western with Oliver Reed, Candice Bergen, and Gene Hackman. Again things all started to change after The Wild Bunch. So there is a rough history of Hollywood westerns, and with that we’ve come to the end of the dusty trail.

to Orange City Council for failing to construct footpaths on either side of March Street outside Dudley Private Hospital, with very limited parking on site. The hospital started in 1979! On the hospital side there is a steep slope to the road, on the other rough grass or broken stone. Even in times of limited visiting rights, footpaths to the hospital on March Street are very difficult and dangerous. MASSIVE THUMBS UP to Brodie from Eureka Furniture. So polite, knowledgeable and not pushy. I went back 3 times dealing with this young man who remembered me each time. His personality resulted in me buying a dining package. Fluffy is our beloved 10 year-old Moodle – and her effervescent personality is a lot like the bubbles in this bottle. This vintage has more Pinot Noir (69%) than Chardonnay (31%) which is evident in the light blush colour and the inviting strawberry-like aromas.
