What big world events were the most memorable while you were growing up? I spose the World War, I enlisted, and I served for four and a half years —I was a voluntary aid Nurse. During that time I worked on a Dutch hospital ship in the Middle East. We took patients from the Middle East down to Durban hospital, eventually I came back to Australia and went up to the Northern Territory, we had the patients coming in from the battles that were raging there. What is your favourite childhood memory? I suppose the dogs we had, my mother imported the first Alsatian into Australia from Germany, and at the time Rin Tin Tin (male German Shepherd that was an international star in motion pictures) was on the films, we

went to all the shows and she had ribbons, it was a very special time with the dogs. The crowds of people would come three deep to come around and look at the dogs, we spent a lot of time around the kennels. What life advice would you pass along to your grandchildren? I have four grandchildren, I would say, listen to others, you’ll learn a lot by listening. What did you want to be when you grew up? That’s a hard one, a good Christian. I just worked at the family firm and hoped that my efforts were enough. What was your first job? My father had a business and of course I went into that. He was the first to start making theatre equipment like the big curtains and the screens that movies were shown on. He imported a lot of equipment from America. I only became a nurse because of the War. I went to Concord Military Hospital when it was opened, as a Red Cross worker, the need was there for people to be trained and become nurses, so I did my training there and from there I went onto the hospital ship. What are you most proud of? My two Sons, I’m very proud of them, they’ve done well in life.

Who is the person who influenced your life the most? Why? I’d have to say my Father because my Mother died when I was 11, my Father brought us up and he insisted on conditions that we abided by and he was a good man. What was your favourite thing to do for fun? I’ve always been a walker, sitting in your room won’t get you anywhere, you’ll just age quicker, I’ve already been this morning, I walked four blocks and back four blocks, start the day walking and you’ll keep healthy. I’m also a needle work teacher originally—I love my craft, at one time I was president of the hand weavers and spinners, I had a loom and I used to like to weave. How is the world today different from what it was like when you were a child? It was very simple when I was a child, there is much more for people to do and be employed now, young people are very fortunate with the opportunities open to them now days. They can get to University, something that we never dreamed of being able to accomplish. I just wanted to add, the accommodation here is excellent and so is the service. I’m quite happy to be here.

Songwriters Closing the Generation Gap

Music over the years has been the cause for widening the generation gap, however at the same time it has also been a bridge to bring the generations together. The latter is exactly what is at the centre of a new musical adventure for the Orange live music scene. The ‘Generations’ concept is the brainchild of local guitar teacher and go to guitar singer/songwriter Matt Arthur who said, “The premise of the night is to introduce original singer/songwriters to the Orange live music loving audience. It’s also a night where we can break down the barriers of the different music generations”. The evenings will see each artist perform a solo 25-minute set of their original compositions, then straight after the third act they will all perform a song together that they have all collaborated on.

Meditation Workshop Central West Meditation are a not for profit organisation who will be hosting a number of different workshops in Orange over the coming months to explain how you can incorporate meditation into your daily life. The next workshop to be held will be 5 Habits for a Happy Life which will be held on Friday September 14 from 7-8.30pm at the Senior Citizens Centre on Kite Street. Gen Kelsang Dawa is a Kadampa Buddhist monk who has been practicing Buddhism for over 17 years and he will be leading these workshops. Dawa is an inspiring teacher who aims to help cultivate

positive states of mind. The methods taught work for anyone, at any age and in any country and will focus on overcoming negative states of mind such as anger, jealousy, and ignorance to developing a positive state of mind being love, compassion and wisdom.
