5 WAYS TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR TAX REFUND
In the coming weeks you’ll likely be doing your tax return with the prospect of getting back a nice little return to do something with. CafeSmart is a major national campaign of StreetSmart Australia, and is all about promoting community responses to homelessness. This year they aim to put $300,000 in new funding, back into the sector. Village Bakehouse’ Nikki Alexander, Hollie Harris and Dani Alexander
Buy a “special” coffee on August 3 Homelessness affects all communities, it is one of the most pressing social issues we face today and on August 3, small businesses all over Australia, with their customers, will team up to raise funds to help address the issue. Several of our local coffee shops are getting involved to make that difference. Village Bakehouse, The Blind Pig, Merv’s Eatery, Good Eddy and Racine Bakery will all be taking part in CafeSmart, an event organised by nation-wide charity StreetSmart.
CafeSmart is a major national campaign built on the energy and commitment of the coffee industry around Australia. It unites the community over our favourite brew to help fund local homeless services through the donation of $1 from every coffee sold at participating cafés. CEO, StreetSmart Australia, Adam Robinson said, “We know that on any given night 115,000 people are victims of homelessness, and that number is likely to be much higher.
The Australian Institute of Social Welfare research tells us as many as 261 people are turned away every day because homeless services just cannot cope. The current crisis is the outcome of poor decisions on housing, social security, mental health, and the basic protections of the social safety net, and it will take serious work to recover. CafeSmart is really a reflection of a very concerned Australian community wanting to do something, and to put funding back into the sector.
StreetSmart was founded in 2003 to support and strengthen smaller, grassroots community organisations helping the homeless. These smaller organisations are critical in helping many people in crisis. StreetSmart has raised and distributed $5.1million to support 569 organisations.
Locally raised donations will be pooled and directed back into local services that are delivering frontline services, many of which have little public funding to sustain their work. These are services that are serving up hot meals, putting roofs over people’s heads, and working hard towards long term solutions to the crisis. Village Bakehouse Store Manager, Dani Alexander said, “Village Bakehouse has supported Café Smart since the beginning, it’s a
great thing to see that section of the local population that needs it getting an extra hand, especially now at a hard time of year. It would be great to see them get their lives back together with the Orange community’s support. It’s also nice to know this goes directly back into our community, that helps immensely.” Orange City Life applauds this initiative and encourages coffee lovers everywhere to think about supporting those cafes who are participating in CafeSmart!

In 1975 Renee Geyer nailed down a certified 9 track groove funk’n’soul fest entitled Ready to Deal. It was a giant leap for her, handpicking the cream of the crop on the Australian music scene to play on the album. She also co-wrote some the songs and co-produced the album, kicking down the door and shattering the glass ceiling for women in the Australian Music Industry. hit and the album launched her overseas. Music lovers of Orange will have an opportunity to hear this album brought to life by a bunch of local virtuosos. Cecelia Rochelle will be handling the singing duties, whilst the funk soul rhythm brothers of Andrew Ferguson on Bass and Rocky Rochelle will lay down the funky rhythms. Driving the grooves along with the help of 88 Keys will be Kyle Manning, whilst Matt
Arthur will provide some funk flair on guitar. Mickey Young will channel the inner grooves using his sax to take the room to a higher plane. Winter Fire Festival to Ignite in Millthorpe The inaugural Winter Fire Festival will be happening around the Orange region across the weekend of August 3 – 5. The three day festival will showcase the best of an authentic country winter through a series of bonfire events inspired by the Australian cracker night bonfire tradition. There will be a bit of something for everyone ranging from char grilled feasts, rich red wines under our region’s expansive starry night skies while bonfires blaze or you can huddle up next to a fireplace in one of our country pubs, cafes or restaurants. There will also be some great musical entertainment happening across the weekend Kicking off the Festival on Friday 3rd August will be a winter night market along Pym Street in historic Millthorpe Village. Musical duo Smith and Jones will be filling the air with their sweet voices and some delightful tunes from their Dark Gives Way album. They will also be showcasing some new tunes from the prolific pen of Abby Smith as they gear up towards long player No.2. Abby Smith and Sophie Jones have also been touring back and forth across the east coast with Michael Carpenter performing a sensational tribute show to the

Late Tom Petty. The response to these shows has been so positive, that an album has been recorded and released as a musical tribute to Tom Petty. The album has been receiving some good reviews and the single Listen To Her Heart, went to the number one spot on the Australian Country radio chart in the last week of May. A Very Charming Acoustic Sunday with Mel Molong Players Show The Molong Players have been busy rehearsing for their 40th Show on the 4th, 10th and 17th of August. The Molong players began 40 years ago to raise funds for community groups. In that time that have raised thousands of dollars for schools, community organisations, along with community projects. The event has proved to be one of Molong’s major fundraising events for the town and this year they want to make it the best year yet.
The show is written by the players themselves and incorporates some local context and well-known TV and film stars. Come watch as the whole community of Molong come together for their 40th show to bring you a night full of laughs and entertainment. A very packed room at Club Millthorpe, was charmed well and truly by visiting songstress from Candelo Mel Horsnell. She came equipped with only one guitar her trusty old nylon string that used to belong to her uncle, with a few subtle modifications to accommodate some amplification. What she had in her arsenal was a collection of melodic tunes that she laid out across the afternoon. The performance covered all aspects of her career including songs such as Sometimes from her first album right through to Princes Park Motel from her new album with Steve Appel (King Curly) The World has a Gentle Soul. Every song connected with the audience throughout the two sets. As a gold sunset
rose over the village greens at Club Millthorpe the audience swooned as Mel brought the afternoon to an end with la vie en rose. In an age where a musicians worth is measured by how many streams they’re getting, a more realistic measure is the audience response in a room to an artist’s performance. A testament to how good Mel’s performance was that the little suitcase holding her various CD’s was empty at end with many punters purchasing a musical memories to rekindle this charming afternoon. The next Acoustic Sunday Session to be held on 19th August will be a very special event Songwriter Circle featuring Montgomery Church (Cielle Montgomery & James Church), Genni Kane and Jon Wilby.
