Name: Mary Agnes Nash Age: 88 Where and when were you born? Orange in 1929, I think that’s right? What are the most important lessons you’ve learned in life? Well, to be a good farmers wife I think. I used to help my dad on the farm, then I married a farmer, Bruce, we’ve been married for 63 years. He visits me each day. The farm is Red Bank - near Toogong it’s around a 60km trip one way. I used to cook for shearers, I cooked them meals for 50 years. I used to give them something different every day, could be a meat pie, a baked leg, something different for the five days. I used to help Bruce draught sheep. In the early days of irrigation, we used to lift the pipes, he would lift one side, I would life the other, we’d change the pipes that way. It was hard work, especially in one particular paddock, all we were doing was boggin. *laughs* Our son has taken the farm over.

What big events were the most memorable while you were growing up? Having to go away for school, I went to a boarding school in Bathurst, I didn’t actually mind it, when I was home I found I had to help my mother do a lot of work, she had

What life advice would you pass along to your grandchildren? I would love to pass my good habits onto them *laughs* they have all been successful. What did you want to be when you grew up? Just a good woman I think, see in those days farmers daughters never went to work because we didn’t have cars, we stayed at home and helped our mothers and fathers if we could. We never looked to go to work, I used to do a lot of knitting, so I would take knitting orders, I did a heck of a lot of knitting. Dad’s youngest sister taught me to knit, Mums youngest sister taught me to crochet. What was your favourite job? I was a dress maker in the early days, my kids never had bought clothes until they got into high school, when they got to high school, I said bugger it. I remember making Marg our eldest a lovely little red dress in a pretty satin, she said, ‘Mum whenever I wore that dress I felt like a princess.’ What are you most proud of? I think the success of my children, they are all wonderful. Who is the person who influenced your life the most? Why? I don’t know, I sort of never looked for anything like that, I was content in life and once I married a farmer Dad said, ‘She’ll be right’. What is your favourite thing to do for fun? I enjoy my knitting still, I still sell them. It takes me six weeks to make a rug.

Five Decisions 1. How Much You Save Being able to save some of your income is the NUMBER ONE determining factor in how financially successful you will be! The only way you can get ahead financially is to save. What you can turn those savings into then depends on what you do with the money, but if you’re not saving anything you have nothing with which to build wealth. What strategies do you currently have in place to save money? 2. How Much You Borrow Debt can be a financial noose around your neck. That’s because there is so much money being borrowed to purchase things that are only going to go down in value. Borrowing can be a good thing if it’s used for investment, however most people get bogged down with a huge mortgage

which then prevents them being able to save and invest, let alone borrow and invest. Therefore, one of the key decisions that will impact on your financial future is how much money you have to repay. If it’s not too late, then be mindful of how much you’re willing to borrow to buy a home as the higher your mortgage, the harder it is to create wealth outside of the home. If you already have a home and mortgage then the trick is to get the mortgage paid off ASAP! Leading to… 3. How Quickly You Pay Off Debt Many people don’t take debt seriously enough because they don’t understand the long term implications of borrowing money and having to pay it back with interest… the banks do though! • Pay down credit cards. Generally, credit

card debt has the highest interest rate (for this reason, avoid credit card debt wherever possible). • Pay down other non-deductible loans. A car loan would be an example of a nondeductible loan. Your mortgage is also a non-deductible loan. • Pay down deductible loans. 4. How Seriously You Take Insurance Far too many people ignore the importance of insurance because they believe it’s a waste of money and/or don’t think bad things will happen to them. You only have to turn the news on every night or read the newspaper each day to see the reasons why insurance is so important. And when it comes to insurance the realisation you must have is that you’re ability to earn an income is your most valuable asset.

That why if you have a family who depends on you that you have to have adequate life insurance. And whether or not you have a family, income protection insurance is a must. Failure to have these means financial ruin if anything serious happens. Corrugated Iron Unleash Rock of the Ages In less than 12 months Corrugated Iron have recorded two albums in Orange at Dotted Eight Studios. Their debut Magical Land was released in December and on Saturday 4th August they will be launching their second long-player Rock Of the Ages. The band is headed up by keyboard veteran Ray Vanderby who has sat behind the keys for Blackfeather, the Doug Parkinson Band, Stevie Wright and Jon English. Ray writes the tunes for Corrugated Iron that he builds on big grooves from his Hammond keyboard, which are driven along by a pounding rhythm section consisting of Mark Welch on Drums and Shane Dickerson on bass, whilst Ado

cuts through the tunes with his driving guitar and fluid soloing Their sound is one that is cooked up in a melting pot of influences harking back to the classic rock of 60’s and 70’s, paying homage to keyboard giants Jon Lord of Deep Purple and Ray Manzarek of the Doors. Whilst it is all solid rocking they like to take little side diversions into catchy pop here and there to mix it up as well. Their live appearances aren’t a common occurrence, but whenever they do play audiences fill the floor and by the end of the set are always wanting more. Unbelievable acrobatics to highlight Circus Oz Circus Oz is coming to Orange on September 15 at 7.30pm at Orange Civic Theatre and it’s a show that’s sure to entertain! “You can expect a spectacular evening of Aussie wit interwoven with unbelievable acrobatics and aerial acts, which explore what it really means to be a Model Citizen in Australia. On stage, the striking Yves Klein blue props provide a landscape for the ensemble to play with recognisable everyday objects such as giant scissors, a safety pin, cotton reel and clothes peg. The audience can also look forward to hilarious parody of Waltzing Matilda (Worship My Webber) and a wonderfully ironic Intolerance song,” said Karen Leskiw organiser of the event. Circus Oz has a cast of 11 people with the Ania Reynolds as Musical Director and this year they have a new member of the team, 18-year-old Shani Stephens. This will be her first professional circus performance. Some highlights of the show include a seamlessly choreographed group acrobatics, foot juggling, balance acts and live music. Fire Festival at the Greenhouse

As part of the special Winter Fire Festival event held in Orange the Greenhouse will be hosting a Drum Beat performance on Sunday August 5th from 12pm. The Drum Beats are an Australia African drummers and dancers from Sydney who will be doing a special performance, one that will dazzle you with colourful spectacle. Drum Beats have a mission to bring people together through rhythm and drumming. They have an explosive energy which will leave you feeling happy and

excited. On the day you can also find a street food menu at the Greenhouse which will include smoked ribs, Dan’s lamb shoulder, chorizo, and pork belly all from the spit; served with corn, jacket potato and greens.
