Your Wheels has now become a regular feature in Orange City Life and part of the appeal has been the great vehicles we’ve featured on this cover page each week. TAKE A PLEASANT
DRIVE
The Central West has some of the best hidden gems and they are all a short drive from Orange. We recently explored Blayney and there is certainly a lot to offer in the village including a new shop that has started up in town. After exploring Vintage 42 we also came across CJ Scammell Ceramics which are handmade by a lady from Cowra. Although there is certainly much more to explore, for now enjoy the stories of these two women who have turned their passion into a work of art.
Vintage 42 reflects who I am In the centre of Blayney’s Main street you will find a new shop, Vintage 42, designed to inspire and bring you a timeless classic look. Vintage 42 stocks unique and interesting homewares, both old and new, that have been carefully selected by owner Donna Broekhuizen. Vintage 42 is more than just a shop to Donna, it’s a dream and a creative outlet where she can put on display her talents and a part of herself. “I have been wanting to do this for a very long time, maybe 21 years. It was just timing, the kids are older and can manage for themselves now. I live around the corner and I can pick my hours. “It wasn’t really planned. We went
for a drive and just got some old wares and my husband said oh well let’s open a shop then. “This is me and this is what I love. I thought I would do that bit different and not do what everybody else does. I just buy what I like, and I hope for the best. You are putting out your soul and what you love, and I find if you don’t love it, you can’t sell it,” said Donna. Donna is very particular with what she picks as she has a certain eye for detail. “When I go buying the stuff my husband and I go travelling around
Australia and I will hand pick it. It is very selective and it makes me that little bit different. “I am competing with a lot of homeware stores and I can’t do that. I have to stand out and be that bit different. “It is interesting finding out what people are going to use different things for and sometimes I didn’t think of it that way. If I can inspire people that’s what it’s all about,” said Donna. Donna says her love for design started from a young age as she watched her mum re-decorate the house and she soon followed in her mum’s footsteps. “We have an old Californian bungalow and I am always changing it around and styling it. It is what I have always done and what my mum use to do. We would go home, and the house would be changed around, it’s just something that we do. “Before the shop I use to just select certain pieces that were a bit quirky or different. Your home has to reflect who you are and then I hope that this shop reflects who I am,” said Donna. Donna hands selects everything so there was no surprise when the name of her shop had more meaning to it.
“So the 42 is a part of my husband. It has always been his thing, it is like the meaning of life, hitch hikers guide to the galaxy. He has always used it ever since I have met him. So, I thought what could we have that incorporates the both of us. “Vintage is what I like so I thought I would bring in the 42 and it’s something that people can remember,” said Donna. As well as travelling across the countryside to find things that are a bit different, Donna also stocks items from local people, including Cassie Scammell’s Ceramics from Cowra. “I do try to find different things like Cassie’s ceramics. It was funny how that started, I had a friend come in looking for pottery and I said that it was so hard to find anything that was good quality anymore. “It is a small world. I had a friend who knew Cassie and I just love her ceramics, they are all so unique and different,” said Donna. Vintage 42 has now been in Blayney for 4 months and Donna says she will even hunt certain things down that people have requested. Why not pop in and say hello, you never know what you might find. TT

We first came across Cassie’s beautiful handmade ceramics at Vintage 42 in Blayney and we couldn’t wait to meet the woman behind these handmade treasures.

assie lives on a property near Cowra, she’s a wife, a mother, a business partner, a farmer, and a ceramic artist. “For me my ceramics has become more than a hobby. It has morphed and progressed into full time work. I love that it connects me to other food producers and makers in the Central West. I also love how my work compliments other people’s work or businesses. I think as a region we have a lot to offer and I love to help promote our producers and artisans. “I met my friend, teacher and guru,

Rebecca Dowling at a mutual friend’s play group in 2014. Rebecca asked me to come to her ceramic studio and have a go at making a bowl. After that I was hooked. I started lessons with Rebecca and I helped her in the studio,” said Cassie. Cassie is a busy woman, but she takes it all in her stride and draws her creativity from her everyday life. “I draw my inspiration from lots of things, my teacher Rebecca Dowling, our farm, rustic pieces of furniture, machinery and food. I look at different recipes and imagine the
finished product in my bowl or plate and how I can make a bowl or plate to suit a recipe. “To make a cup or a bowl is a long process. First it is having a shape and style you want to make. Making the cup or bowl on the wheel and letting it dry to the leather hard stage. Shaping and turning the cup or bowl to a desired shape, then letting them dry for up to two weeks. You then use a technique called bisque firing which is turning the clay to stoneware, you put the cup or bowl in the kiln which is at 1000 degrees.
Then we start to glaze and re-pack the kiln to fire the cup or bowls again at 1250 to 1300 degrees. “I enjoy the whole process. I am constantly learning and developing my style. Although I think the best satisfaction is seeing my piece of art that I have made, being loved, and used,” said Cassie. Cassie says that art has always been in her blood but it’s her love for the land and entertaining that drives her artworks. “I have always loved art. My mother is an artist and an inspiration. Cowra
has an amazing art community as well as a progressive agricultural community. “I love cooking, entertaining and spending time with family and friends. I love living on the land, with all its ups and downs. It strengthens me,” said Cassie. You can find Cassie’s ceramics at Apiary Art and Design in Cowra as well as Vintage 42 in Blayney.
