Meet Don Bell, a Blayney local who has lived here all his life. Don is certainly a local character who gave us the run down of life in Blayney over the years as well as a few laughs. “I have been in Blayney for 79 years and soon to be 80 at the end of the year. “It was pretty good growing up here. There wasn’t as many trucks and things, there is a lot more traffic now than there ever was. “I worked at a garage. My dad started it in 1924 and I started in 1952 with him. I was there until 1970 until I built a new place at the top end of town. I was a mechanic for 51 years, it was a long time in the motor game. “I have also been driving school busses since 1964. You’ve got to talk to kids like we are talking, don’t talk down to them. Talk to them normal, they might still try you but for the majority of the time they will respect you. “I am retired now, and I do a bit of work here at the Information Centre,” said Don. Blayney is often known for its chilly

weather, but Don thinks even that has changed over the years. “I notice now that there is not near as much snow as we use to get when I was going to school. Even about 15 year ago we had a guy skiing up the main street. We had snow the other day, but it was just a light coating and was gone within a few hours,” Don said. When asking Don what he loved about Blayney it was quite a simple answer, and one that has kept him here all these years. “I like the people here. It is like when I left the garage people said to me do you miss the garage and I would say no but I miss the people. So that’s why I decided to come down and get involved in the Information Centre. “I find the people here are really friendly and it’s so close to everywhere. I just like the area,” Don said. Living here all your life, one might think you would get bored of the place, but not Don. “I always have plenty of things to do here.

It’s only 3hrs to Sydney and 3hrs to Canberra. “I play bowls on Wednesday evenings and often catch up with people for a cuppa. That’s the thing about smaller places. “My wife always says how long will you be down at IGA and I will say oh I don’t know. She says I will expect you when I see you because I usually meet someone I know,” laughed Don. Don assures us he will be living to 100 because of the fresh air and good water in Blayney. He also puts it down to a few other things. “I gave up smoking and drinking when I was 14, I had no future in that. You go into the bar or club and they buy me a beer and I say sorry I don’t drink. They say come on it won’t hurt you, and I say it won’t hurt me because I won’t be drinking it,” Don said. If you find yourself in Blayney be sure to call into the Information Centre and have a chat with Don. You will often find him enjoying a milk shake and spinning a yarn to someone.

LET’STALKFINANCE

WITH DANIEL MCGREGOR

YOUR MOST IMPORTANT ASSET What is your most important financial asset? Is it your home? Your superannuation fund? Your investment portfolio? Your sports car (probably not!)?

A

ctually, it’s you. That’s right, you are your own most important financial asset. Think about it. The average Australian working full-time earns around $75,000 a year. If the average working career is 40 years, then the average Australian will have $3 million worth of wages or salary pass through their hands. In addition, their employers will need to contribute at least $285,000 into superannuation on their

behalf. So, you’re working life is worth almost $3.3 million – and that’s just if you’re average. What’s more, you will use at least some of this $3.3 million to buy wealth-creating assets such as a family home, investments and assets in your superannuation fund. Without an income, none of these things are possible. Even more importantly, you will use much of this $3.3 million to support the people you most care about – your partner, your kids,

your parents – maybe even your favourite football team! Most of us do not think twice about insuring less important assets such as our car or our house. Some people even insure their holidays. But too few people realise that the most important asset to insure is themselves. In particular, their ability to earn an income. That’s why we recommend that people treat themselves like a house or a car. Every year you need to pay some money to

make sure that your asset remains in good working order. That it keeps doing the job you needed to do – putting a roof over your kids head in the case of your house, getting you from A to B in the case of your car. And bringing in that monthly income, in the case of your good health. Cheers,

Daniel

Orange Christian School fills theatre with the Sound of Music Photo by Leanne Schenkel

A cold and wet Saturday night in June and the Orange Christian School have managed to get 400 people into seats for their second performance of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s beloved classic, the Sound of Music. The stage sets have been well crafted providing the feel of being in an Abbey with the scale you’d expect of arches and columns interspersed with stained glass windows. The five nuns work well within this space delivering the songs with their voices working harmoniously together including some strong vocal and dramatic performances from Mira Praveen, Tahlia Morrow and Hannah Pierce. Playing the lead of Maria was Jordan Berry who put in a very confident and engaging performance, driving all the songs home that would have delighted any fan of the Julie Andrews or Mary Martin versions. The scenes in the Von Trapp villa set saw some delightful numbers performed by all the Von Trapp Children, with a standout from Jessica Grant as Liesel on ‘Sixteen

The Honeydrippin Mudskippers looked a million dollars, especially Miss Tootsie Von Teetie in her vintage green velvet dress. As always, the infectious rhythms of their Americana showcase had the punters up and out of the seats and ‘shaking their thangs’ on any available space in front of the band. Another space being used at the back of the Museum gallery where two acoustic artists performed. Natalie McIver got things underway and pulled off a nice version of Tom Petty’s Free Falling. The other set was given by James Rutten who filled the room with people getting into his confident delivery of mainly original material that

R E V I E W going on Seventeen’. Whilst Matilda Pyle melted the audience with her cute inducing performance as Gretel, the youngest Von Trapp. The ballroom scene was well choreographed with the cast waltzing in an array of colourful gowns. There were many strong acting performances including that of Adison Toms as Captain Von Trapp providing the right mix of cold sternness that softens as he warms to the charms of Maria. There was no glossing over themes about the uprising and invasion of Austria by the Third Reich and with Eric Cortes, Geordi Errington, and Caleb Cairns putting in convincing performances as ‘Nasties’. These dramatic performances dealing with the uncertainties of living in an occupied land and how it effects everything, even young love, were lightened here and there with the musical numbers that ended with the nuns and cast performing climb every mountain as the curtains came down. The cast and crew came out to the audience clapping along to the musical reprises performed by the orchestra in the pit, who provided magnificent music all night, which also included 3 students from the schools musical program. An enchanting evening had been had by all, with some promising young stars to watch out for. If you enjoy a bit of musical theatre, why not support the up and coming talent. evoked stylings of troubadours of another era then easily shifting to bright pop tunes extolling the joys of being in love. A very promising performer that venue owners should check out. Ending the evening was a trimmed down trio version of November Shorn who got their set underway with a Scottish jig. However it was an Italian Jig Tarantella that got the audience up and out of their seats as the band played and instructed them through the steps. Another fantastic night up late at the museum, make sure you keep your eye out for the next one which is due in September. PC
