There comes a time in everyone’s life where change is inevitable, and Ben McGarity has decided that the time has come for him to hang the mic up on the music ‘gig’ scene. Most people around town would have come to know Ben over the years, as he has played his fare share of gigs. “I’ve been playing professionally for around 16 years and over that time I’ve done countless weddings, functions, pubs, clubs and the like. It has always been a strong passion of mine since I was a wee

nipper. “I’ve loved being able to be a part of people’s memories; helping to add that extra something to special events. I’ve met a lot of awesome people too,” said Ben. Bledisloe Cup was awesome! In general, just the pleasure of making an income from something I’m passionate about has been the best,” said Ben. Music is something that Ben has always loved but there’s one thing that trumps that, and that is his son. “Over the years I’ve missed numerous friend and family events due to having a full diary devoted to music, but the biggest reason is my 6-year-old boy whom I see fortnightly. I’m retiring to be the best father I can for the little fella. There also comes a time in any career path where the passion is not as strong as it once was, and the heart yearns for a challenge or change,” Ben said. Ben is most looking forward to having free weekends, something he hasn’t had for some time now. Not to worry though as you will still see him around town at pub choir, trivia hosting and the odd day job here and there, not to mention seeing his friendly face here in OC Life as our design extraordinaire. “I plan on enjoying free time on weekends and still looking to enjoy my music on a more personal level. Writing original music is definitely on the cards, but on my own terms, more as a hobby. I would also consider teaching, passing on some of the skills and knowledge I’ve gained.’ “A big thank you to all the peeps who came to listen and the venues who gave me a go,” said Ben. Farewell and good luck Ben, no doubt we will be hearing what mischief you are up to next.

MAY 26: SMITH AND JONES IN MOLONG
A story that should be told… Cowra local Julie Bayl has set out to inspire others through her book ‘Focus on Survival’ and to show people how, even in the face of adversity, people can overcome it. “Focus on Survival is an exciting, yet heartwarming true story about ordinary people’s struggles to survive the ravages of war. Their extraordinary efforts are nothing short of inspiring! Not only soldiers, but civilians too have shown extreme boldness in war ravaged lands. Although unsung heroes, many of them inspire us and show the strength of the human spirit,” said Julie. Julie has always loved literature and language, even writing short stories and poetry, but it wasn’t until she got to know her mother in law more and their story of
L I V E
surviving war that Focus on Survival was born. “Some people create works of art, or play a musical instrument, expressing good things in words to me is a source of self fulfillment. I have always loved books, especially true or historical stories. “When I married my husband Charles, I found his mother’s intriguing stories about the challenges their family faced during World War II heart-warming and amazing! “I realised respectfully, through their distance from actual war zones, they generally had no idea what the average person and family’s experienced. That was when I said repeatedly that someone in the family should write this down, it’s a story that should be told,” said Julie. After 20 years Julie offered to write the story and it took some time and many obstacles to overcome, but now she can’t

wait to share it with others. “It is a heart-warming story of genuine love and devotion. I love the incredible courage and ingenuity that ordinary people were able to muster to save others and their own precious family,” said Julie. Focus on Survival has also received an honourable mention Award in the Eric Hoffer Book Awards 2018. A must read for any history lover.
