Sometimes owning a business can be challenging and a phone call I took last week brought that home to me again. So much so I feel it’s worth making our position clear again. The caller wasn’t happy when we told them that we wouldn’t run a story about their youngster’s recent achievements in Sydney. I appreciate they may have been disappointed but their response after being told was what really ticked me off. I was asked who I was and when told I was the owner words to the effect of, “I’ve heard about you, you’re getting a reputation” followed up with “I’ll take this to Fair Trading”. Although not a common occurrence, from time to time, we are confronted by people like this who, after not getting their own way, have become quite nasty. For that reason and for anyone who may have heard a story about us not giving someone something they wanted, or about my so called ‘reputation’, let me put a few things on the record. First thing to say is; this is my business, and I can choose who and what I want to include in OCL. Any talk of going to Fair Trading just because we chose not to run a story for someone is simply ridiculous. We can’t please everyone I suppose. Next thing to say is sometimes we choose not to run stories or give publicity

to things for personal reasons. For example, we choose to stay away from subjects that we believe do nothing to promote family values. One of the reasons for this is that we know many young kiddies look through our paper from time to time. The last thing to say is that we rely totally on advertising revenue to keep our doors open. For this reason it makes little business sense for us to give free publicity to anyone or anything where making money for anything is involved. Be it a school fete, a charity ball, a club fundraiser or anything else, to expect publicity in our newspaper for absolutely nothing is unreasonable in my view. Sounds hard I know, but in many cases these same groups will happily pay a caterer, entertainers, they’ll pay for a venue, they’ll pay to print posters or flyers to put around town, they’ll pay to hire marquees and equipment but when it comes to paying a few dollars to advertise the event or function, the one thing they need most, the one thing that has the most chance of actually getting people to hear about and come to their event or function, they expect for it free. Why is that? That said, we take great pride helping countless people in many different ways and don’t expect any accolades. Hopefully, any talk of my ‘reputation’ mentions a good side as well.

I’m happy to report that the feedback following our first full gloss edition (above) last week has been far more favourable than not. Only one reader wasn’t keen and asked that we keep OCL the way it was.

Following on from that, you’ll notice that my design team have been busy tweaking a few things as we move more towards a magazine format. Hope you like what they’ve done. Our new Alive and Wise section gained some pleasing reader response this week with four people sending me things of interest. My sincere hope is that this is just the beginning of many more to come. Speaking of reader contributions, one of the pleasing things we’ve done over recent months is our Foto Forum where we invite photographers to send us great photos and then reward one each week with a $50 prize. We continue to receive many photographs for this and even those that perhaps aren’t suitable for Foto Forum, we often include elsewhere in OCL such as In Focus. Don’t stop sending them, please. In the same vein, we’re now going to try something else along the same lines. We’ll call it our Writer’s Forum and as the name suggests, it’s for writers. Check the ad on page 10 if you’re a writer. Banjo celebration with a twist In keeping with the Banjo Paterson Festival theme, Duntyleague Golf Club in partnership with the Rotary Club of North Orange, is hosting a golf day as part of the Festival on Friday the 13th February. With prizes being awarded for best dressed man and woman on the day, all who come along are encouraged to dress in period attire; think Plus Fours and full coverage

dresses reflecting the era. As part of the golf, each person will play three holes as it was played back in 1901 using hickory shaft clubs, with prizes being awarded for long drive, straight drive and nearest the pin in Men’s and Ladies categories. Will be an interesting insight into just how far golf technology has come. Cost is $25 with registration from 11.30am on the day for a 12.30pm shotgun start. Special mention to Lucknow Skin Shop’s Di Gee for donating the prize money for the days’ events.

A BUSH HUT ON A TRUCK WITH FLAGS FLYING FOR THE 2015 BANJO PATERSON AUSTRALIAN POETRY FESTIVAL ADDED THE COLOUR CITY TO THE CAVALCADE THROUGH THE MAIN STREET OF TAMWORTH. bush hut on a truck with flags flying for the 2015 Banjo Paterson Australian Poetry Festival added the Colour City to the Cavalcade through the main street of Tamworth. Rotarian David Williams came up with the idea, John Spanjer from Busy Bees with the building experience, Westruss and Bunnings Orange with donated materials and Dale Harris and Jillian Ferguson from Lindsay Harris House Haulage with the truck that gave Orange some special publicity in Tamworth at their busiest time. As the bush hut moved down Peel Street, it was circled by Mulga Bill on his penny-farthing bicycle and greeted by the enthusiastic crowd, obviously impressed to see Banjo, Orange, and Rotary participating in their Festival. This follows a visit by Banjo to the Parkes Elvis Festival a couple of weeks earlier, where the bush hut occupied a stall space in the streets of Parkes. This big effort by a few people will hopefully draw more visitors to Orange for the Banjo Paterson Australian Poetry Festival coming up this month. fter meeting with the late, great Alan Sisley, Jim Cobb had a feeling that his prized possession of art works would suit the Orange gallery space. “Alan was interested in the whole collection,” Mr Cobb mentioned how he approached various places to accept the donation of his collection. “Some people wanted to do some cherry picking [through Cobb’s collection] and I said ‘I’m sorry this is a collection and I want to have it shown all in one place not broken up into segments.” It ended up here and I think is it’s in very good hands given the way it’s being shown and exhibited.” He said he’s very happy for his million dollar collection to call Orange ‘home’. “It’s as good a space as you’d see in New York,” Mr Cobb said. Now 35 paintings and two sculptures using his paint are on show in the Orange gallery. “My own collection is rather better and more important than I realised now I’ve seen it in this format,” Mr Cobb said.

Orange Central has undergone a further name change, from Orange Central to Orange Central Square. The name change follows a change in management, with Charter Hall now managing the centre and this sets the scene for bigger and better things to still come. Over recent times, the centre has undergone major changes and it’s fair to say, it’s never looked better. Patricia Hoover and Nick Davison from Coles and Orange Central Square Retail Manager Naiomi Murphy invite everyone to come visit the centre as they point everyone to the new name.

The venerable coupe is lining up for its ninth once-around-the-clock enduro, and is expected to add to its tally of 2201 laps or 13,675 kilometres in practice, qualifying and racing. That is a staggering 8,804 miles in imperial measures! Put in perspective, the distance is more than two Sydney-Perth and return trips, and a one-way journey from Sydney to Sao Paulo (Brazil). It surpasses the combined 12,250 kilometres covered by the great Trans-Siberian and the Orient Express railway journeys, and is over half the distance circumnavigating Australia. The GWS Personnel BMW 335i has won the race twice outright

(when it was a production car event) and has backed up with four class victories. In all, the various driving crews have stood on the podium as a place-getter in all eight contested 12 Hours. This year the veteran GWS Personnel BMW 335i, a regular in the production car Australian Manufacturers Championship, again lines up in Class D, up against several entries that are far removed from coming off the showroom floor. With its business based in the Central West of New South Wales, the GWS Personnel team is the one and only local entry in this year’s event. Ric Shaw re-joins the team, having previously raced the car in 2009, so too Matt Chahda who has been racing V8 Touring Cars and was part of the driver line-up that delivered a class second last year.

TIME FOR A LAUGH TAKE A MINUTE As a crowded airliner is about to take off, the peace is shattered by a 5-year-old boy who picks that moment to throw a wild temper tantrum. No matter what his frustrated, embarrassed mother does to try to calm him down, the boy continues to scream furiously and kick the seats around him. The Rotary clubs have joined forces to host a dinner dance at the Orange Ex-Service’s Club on Thursday, February 19...

“There wouldn’t be anyone in our generation who wouldn’t have seen someone wearing callipers or who was carted away and put in an iron lung to keep them breathing,” said Rotary Club of Orange President John Templeman.

Anywhere between $160 and $180 million needs to

be raised by Rotary clubs to ensure this international co-ordinated effort can happen said Mr Templeman; which will be matched “dollar for dollar” by the Bill & Mary Gates Foundation.

The Rotary clubs have joined forces to host a dinner dance at the Orange ExService’s Club on Thursday, February 19 complete with poetry readings and entertainment by singer/songwriter Gabe Middleton. “All proceeds from the evening will go to Rotary’s fight to eradicate polio in the world,” Mr Morgan said.

The ever popular Brass Celebration will be held in Orange again this year over the weekend of March 7 and 8 and will feature some new faces among the performers. Canberra Brass and the Sydney Veterans Band of the Salvation Army will be performing this year for the first time.

City of Orange Brass Band member and publicity officer John Moss tells OC Life there is always keen interest from bands wanting to perform in Orange at the Brass Celebration. “This year’s line-up will also feature the City of Holroyd Brass Band which last performed in

Orange to great acclaim in 2011 and of course our own City of Orange Brass Band” John said. The Brass Celebration will again feature a number of events for the community to enjoy. These will include free recitals in Cook Park, a street march and a concert at Orange Civic Theatre.

you want people to read what you’re writing as what you actually mean; why do we need a little face to shape what the real story of how we’re feeling really is? Writing should just do that,” she said. Lily said the mixed media pieces in her collection is her response to the “over sexualisation” of women in the media. “It’s a bit of a poke at magazines and the way they portray women… it’s an outrage to an outrage,” she

said. “The paintings and sculptural pieces I make are an expression of my random silly-Lily thoughts, most of which are pretty crude, and express forms of social stigmas incorporating the way in which some of us lather ourselves in the internal inter-web of social selfies, hyped up emojis and the [Facebook] likes,” she said. ALIVE & WISE some more dry carb soda. You leave it for 10 minutes and then vacuum the carb soda up. Next you pour undiluted vinegar onto the wet patch and when it starts to foam you soak it up with a sponge. You leave it to dry. I did it according to instructions some times, but on other occasions I quickly mopped up with a towel first then applied the carb soda only once. Sometimes I waited until the carb soda was quite dry before vacuuming- more like an hour or more - before sweeping it up and adding the vinegar. To be certain I sometimes sponged the area with soapy water afterwards, but I don’t think it was necessary. Thanks Kim, I’m sure several readers will appreciate this advice. And a couple more from me.... Those who suffer from sensitive teeth and gum issues might like to try Dentitex Toothpaste for sensitive teeth at Aldi. THE ORANGE HEALTH SERVICE IS GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH.

e have the largest inland health campus in the southern hemisphere. It’s the envy of towns and cities around Australia. And it’s only going to get stronger. With greater use of the hospital and a wider range of services available, the pressure on parking at the hospital is also only going to grow stronger. When you think about it, a growing hospital is not a bad problem to have. However we need to find a long term solution to the parking problem there. The scheduled opening of the Huntley Road entrance to the back of

the hospital will help alleviate the situation in the short term, but the reality is that demand for services is only going to grow so we may as well get it sorted now. It’s not a choice between frontline services and infrastructure. The funding pools are quite separate and distinct, so if we can’t snaffle some infrastructure money, it will simply go to some other part of NSW. It would be great to have all health administrators from here to Dubbo supporting the push.

Last Friday, legendary Aussie paceman Geoff Lawson visited Orange to encourage people get behind the ICC World Cup, which is hosted this year by Australia and New Zealand.

Funding from the NSW Government looked a bit grim for a while, and there was concern that without additional dollars, events would have to be cut. However, Troy Grant the Deputy Premier answered the call to give the iconic festival an important boost. The Festival runs from 12 – 17 February. Our Banjo heritage is unique and we need to embrace it and build on it! There is a packed program and the organising committee is encouraging everyone to participate and enjoy it. Let’s get behind it!

In the lead-up to the tournament, the NSW Government is sponsoring the Destination NSW Home Ground Tour. There was plenty of fun for Orange’s young cricketers with skills training from some excellent young representative players. While I was there, I got a chance to catch up with Geoff (or “Henry” as he’s affectionately known) and get his views on some of cricket’s most controversial issues. One of the questions I asked him was how long he intended to keep calling the Randwick end of the Sydney Cricket Ground the “University of NSW end” in his radio commentary (he being a graduate of that fine institution). He replied

that he intended to keep doing it as long as people kept complaining about it! You heard it here first folks! As part of the afternoon, I played a game of T20 in a team of assorted yet enthusiastic underdogs against an Orange first grade eleven. The last time I played a game of cricket was in the under 14’s. Unfortunately my old hamstring injury from those days flared up again, hampering my abilities to play at full potential (okay, that’s my story anyway!). Orange City Life’s Stedo, with his lethal pace and reverse swing, starred for the underdogs, but it wasn’t enough. While it’s fair to say we didn’t carry the day, we had a lot of fun.

If you don’t have GI insurance, and you go into battle and get killed, the government only has to pay a maximum of $6000.” “Now,” he concluded, “which bunch do you think they are going to send into battle first?”

ur photo this week shows Charles Packham holding two of his newly developed Packham’s Triumph pear trees. Charles Packham was born in Toongabbie in 1842. In 1848, his parents, Henry and Ann Packham and their family moved to the Molong district. Charles married Mary Robards in 1863. They lived in the Garra district on a property named Clifton. Packham started crossbreeding fruit to create a pear of greater commercial value. With the crossing of a Uvedale St Germain (Bell) and a Williams pear, the Packham’s Triumph pear was developed and favourably received. That’s since Troy (second guitarist) joined the club. Are you all long-time music pals, or is it a recent move for you all to play together? We’re all mates from high school - which was like eight or nine years ago - but only Jarred (lead guitarist) and I have been music buds for that long. Beau (bassist) has been rocking with us for a while too. How would you describe your

sound? Whenever we’re asked what our genre is we just say ‘rock metal’ to be as indiscriminate as possible. We don’t really know, but someone said we sounded like Sevendust recently. I’d disagree. What can we expect from GSC as this month’s 4 on the 4loor headliners? We’ve been working hard on making our set more of a performance rather than just a collection of songs played live. Other than that, we’ll place our

best songs as best as we can. Would you rather be on stage playing live or in the recording studio? Well, we’ve spent more time playing shows that we have in the studio, so I guess we’re more comfortable doing that. Being in the studio is always an interesting learning experience though. Finally, are there any special plans for the 4loor crowd? There is, actually! We’re giving away demos on the night. They’re super good, quality recordings

of three of our songs. There is a condition though, you have to find the post on our Facebook page about it and show it to us on the night. Appreciating history As a Christmas present my son got a series of Australian history books (Fair Dinkum Histories) – informative, a little silly and littered with cartoons and bad puns. Although they were for my son, I ending up reading them all (with permission). I found it very interesting to see how life has changed in Australia. Some changes are, in my opinion, great improvements: like not having your vegetables stolen from your garden every night (unlike 1790s Sydney); and proper sewerage systems. The books challenged me at times whether some of the changes are better. For instance, television has

radically changed our society from outside doers (in general) to insider watchers – increasingly disconnected in a physical sense (although more connected in others). Reading history has helped me to think through if I should change my life now. Another history book I have at home is the bible. It spans a huge time frame, although the pivotal story is the last three years of one man’s life – Jesus of Nazareth. The bible like the Australian history books is based on real events and also challenges you to change your life now. I encourage you to read both.

Winter sport is upon us all It’s that time of year where parents are gearing up for early mornings spent freezing around the various sporting venues our fine City has to offer all in the name of love and support. Tim Cahill was the beneficiary of the youth policy, showing the ‘kids’ how to go about their business through his actions rather than words. “I’m really proud of the boss [Postecoglou], someone being Australian and having the passion to believe in the youngsters. To believe in the talent to really take us to a different level,” Cahill said. “We’ve opened doors inside this team that people would never have known about unless this man had shown people. I’m just happy he took me on the journey 14 months ago. This is a reward for Australian soccer.” It’s clearly a massive moment in Australian Soccer and will hopefully have a knock-on effect similar to that of other big-tournament winning national sides. When the Wallabies won the World Cup, junior numbers increased ten-fold. For Soccer, kids will now see that playing in their country and for their country is as much a pinnacle as the Premier League once was. Succeed here and your pathway will open. The One Day World Cup is just around the corner and after watching Australia demolish England (gleefully) on Sunday night, it dawned on me; I miss The Windies. That once mighty cricketing combination of nations that brought flair and fear to the game in equal amounts. To watch them destroy teams’ time and again was annoying; to marvel at the skill on display was amazing. They’re still quite competitive in T20...but no one really cared about that. Watching the Windies celebrate their one and only victory when they managed to beat South Africa by one wicket was a sad advertisement for how far the game has fallen in the West Indies. Can you imagine the invincible combinations of the 1980s leaping about in ecstasy at a narrow consolation victory? Would this have satisfied them? I want my kids, and those of my friends, to know the exhilaration of watching four terrifyingly fast quick bowlers dominate batsman. After dominating with the ball, out strode batsmen with a devastating hunger for punishing the ball. The game these days is so heavily in favour of batsman, but as Mitchell Johnson et al have shown, nothing beats speed. To play them took skill, clearly, but it also took courage. You can hear the sadness when the great Sir Viv speaks of days gone by. It must drive him and of course his teammates from that successful era, crazy with frustration at the apparent apathy that exists in West Indian cricket. Especially with the administration of the game. When Viv sauntered out to the crease, he made it clear in his manner, his gait; his

expression that there was one boss on the field and his authority would be absolute. He never wore a helmet because he wanted people to know that he was out there to hit the ball, not the other way around. His aggression was total. He personified West Indian cricket. As silly as it sounds, T20 is 100% responsible for the demise of the Windies. No longer does one have to earn a living through being the best Test Match cricketer they can be. A very, VERY good living can be made from plying your T20 skills across the globe. And while that’s great purely from an entertainment perspective, it does nothing to enhance your country’s international standing in the game. I suppose the problem with the Windies player pool is financial. The Test’s and ODI’s can’t pay the bills or build the bank balance as quick as the T20’s can. Even the Windies people have lost interest; but that can be put down to lack of performance rather than lack of interest; if things were to turn around, the fire will burn in them also. So who’s at fault? Not the players. Why would you bother playing Tests if you’re not being paid appropriately? In my opinion, the ICC needs to recognise the problem and put steps in place to sort it out. That doesn’t mean just throwing money willy-nilly and hoping it’ll all be ok but rather an actual incentive scheme to challenge those talented players to play Test cricket. Give them a reason to play Test cricket. Give them the freedom to aspire to follow in the footsteps of the former greats of Windies cricket and I believe they will be great once again.

scribe only met him for the first time as we took the field together on Friday night, he seems a nice chap and it is my understanding he can really play AFL. As he positioned himself deep in the outfield, I had high hopes; his athletic appearance and rumoured AFL skills combining to give me false hope of his cricket ability. Alas, Rothnie’s AFL skills do not convert to the cricket field. He dropped not one but two catches in the outfield. One so simple, Member for Orange Andrew Gee threw his hat down in disgusted frustration. His lack of ability probably cost the celebrities the match. How can one so able in a sport played in the air be so bad at taking a catch with both feet firmly planted on terra firma? The game was played as part of the Home Ground World Cup Tour with former Australian Fast bowler Geoff Lawson on hand to open the bowling for the celebrity’s team. It was an awesome afternoon, played in precisely the right spirit and a fun way to celebrate the game. Disclaimer: Only some of the things mentioned above actually happened. I’m not one to let facts get in the way of a story.

Many of you are unaware but last Friday night a cricket match was played at Wade Park. It was a match that never promised to reach great heights and luckily so, as it didn’t. The match, between a loosely termed ‘celebrity’ team and an even more loosely termed team of Orange’s ‘finest’ cricketers, was played as a ‘social’ under the adapted rules of Cricket Australia’s new Twenty20 Blast program; everyone bats and bowls, each pair of batters occupy the crease for two overs and the opposition team receives five runs for each wicket that falls. Runs hit straight into a designated zone are doubled. The ODCA’s ‘finest batted first, with most contributing somewhat to the scoreboard, compiling an underwhelming – nay, pathetic 4-140 from their 12 overs. Unfortunately the ‘celebs’ could only muster 6-131 in reply. Oh so close. What’s so ugly about that I hear you ask? Well, what was ugly was the performance of some ‘cricketers’. Nick McGrath and Steven Sharp in particular need to find different weekend hobbies. It’s hard to believe they pay for the privilege of taking the field each week. The ugliest performance however has to be that of Orange Tigers star AFL player Michael Rothnie. This

Righto, I have to say it... HOW GREAT WERE THE SOCEROOS? We all know I’m not a big fan of Soccer, but that game was pretty bloody exciting, even for me. I moaned in disbelief as much as any other soccer die-hard when the Koreans scored the equaliser, thinking we may have thrown this one away. In the last 15 minutes, Korea had seemingly all the run of play, our lads had hardly ventured into the Korean half of the pitch. I was worried. Then the camera panned over to Coach Ange Postecoglou and I was instantly more confident. His demeanour was one of determined acceptance; he seemed to be saying ‘ok, that just happened. Now get out there and win the game”. There was no hint of panic, although no doubt he was, his outward expression must surely have settled and relaxed his players. That’s the sign of a good coach. His players duly went out and finished the job. To have chosen such a young squad had many questioning Postecoglou’s tenure in the top job, but now those questions have been put to bed. His was surely the smartest way to go. All the other selection options had been tried and failed. Postecoglou picked young, fit players who will be there for the

This weekend see the Mountains and Plains Swimming Region gather in Parkes for their annual Summer Championship meet. 40 swimmers from the Jets club and 25 from the City of Orange club will attend. This meet covers areas from Glenbrook through to Parkes, Forbes and Cowra and gives swimmers a final chance to qualify for the Country Championships at the Homebush Aquatic Centre in a few weeks time. Hi Everyone, 2015 has started great. With Chris Paul Charity Event teaming up with Chris and coming runner up. Japan Cup ( 10th not too great). Then the announcement of Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Player of the Year award for the 2nd consecutive year! Then bowled solid and made the TV Stepladder for PBA Player Championships. Teamed up with mate Billie O’Neill to make the TV finals for the MarkRoth/ Marshall Holman PBA Doubles Championship. Now competing in the USBC Masters which I won back to back 2013 and 2014.
