The Australian National Field Days get under today and they are celebrating the 70th anniversary of the event. Speaking with the ANFD manager Jayne West in the lead-up to this year’s big weekend, she said it’s going to be a huge one with about 450 exhibitors and close to 1,000 companies represented on the site. Being someone who grew up on a large cropping property I’m always interested in seeing new developments in Ag-Tech and I see this year they have created an ‘Ag-tech Alley’ at the Borenore site where all the latest tech and toys will be on display. And speaking of new technology, this Sunday the Rotary Club of Orange are holding their annual Sustainable Living Expo in the Naylor Pavilion at Orange Showground, where there will be a variety of electric vehicles for people to have a look. I got to take a spin in an EV recently and it was an enjoyable vehicle to drive. With more and more models becoming available in Australia with longer and more reasonably priced I will certainly be considering one in the future. The Expo will also feature a range of exhibitors and information sessions on how we can all live more sustainably and even save a little money. Over the winter months,) I began chasing air leaks and doing a little gap-filling around my own home with the help of a handy thermal imaging camera. I might talk about it for a future issue, but it was very surprising to see just how many unlikely places in the home leak heat (and money!) and how many gaps there were in my roof insulation! There looks to be some interesting information sessions on the Expo program, which can be found at www.rotarycluboforange.org.au

Biggest contribution to a single project: Orange City Council commits $18.5 million for new Conservatorium and Planetarium Work to build a new home for the Orange Regional Conservatorium (ORC) and Planetarium will begin in coming months after Orange City Council agreed to contribute an extra $8.5 million to meet a funding shortfall. The decision (made at last week’s meeting of Council on Tuesday, October 17), sees Orange City Council’s contribution to the now $33.5 million project increase from $10 million up to $18.5 million. The rest of the funding is shared between the Australian Government’s Community Development Grants program ($10 million) and the NSW Government’s Creative Capital Funding program ($5 million). Orange Mayor Jason Hamling said he is proud the council decided to back a project of this scale, which he believes has benefits that will be felt for decades into the future. “This is the biggest contribution that council

has made to a single project,” Cr Hamling said. “That’s a sign of how important this project is to the community of Orange. It really is an intergenerational project that will help shape the culture of Orange into the future.

Council will fund their $18.5 million commitment with the proceeds of selling the current conservatorium site in Hill Street and other property sales, along with a combination of external and internal borrowings.
ORC Management Committee Chair Pam Ryan was thrilled that the final hurdle to building a new home for the conservatorium had been passed.
Orange City Council’s Conservatorium and Planetarium Community Committee chair Cr Kevin Duffy also serves as chair of the Council Finance Committee. He said because it is in “good financial shape” that they are able to commit to major community projects like the conservatorium

“The practical value of factors like that, really come into their own when we have a major project where we have to match government grants dollar-for-dollar,” Cr Duffy said.
“This decision represents an enormous leap forward for the Orange Regional Conservatorium and our vibrant community,” Ms Ryan said. “It will further strengthen our highly successful programs, ensuring that we continue to nurture and inspire the next generation of musicians.” ORC Director Donna Riles also welcomed the news: “This state-of-the-art building is not
just a home for music,” Ms Riles said. “It is a testament to the power of collaboration and the belief in the transformative potential of the arts. We are tremendously excited about the countless possibilities this new facility will unlock.” The new Orange Regional Conservatorium (ORC) and Planetarium will be built in the Orange Civic Northcourt and includes a 275-seat auditorium (with capacity built-in for an additional 48 seats or additional stage); a 65-seat planetarium auditorium; 40 practice studios and rehearsal spaces; front- and back-of-house facilities including main lobby, bar and kitchen; office space; amenities and ancillary spaces. Local construction company Renascent has been awarded the tender to build the new facility. Renascent also built the Orange Regional Gallery extension and is currently building the new Wentworth Golf Club. The first work will involve site preparation on the land north of the Orange Regional Gallery.

If you’ve been thinking about buying an EV or just curious, this Sunday’s Orange Sustainable Living Expo is a chance to see a range of models up close and even have a chat with owners to see what it’s like owning and driving an electric vehicle. The Orange Sustainable Living Expo on Sunday, October 29, kicks off the Rotary Club of Orange’s week-long program of events for Sustainable Living Week. Held in the Naylor Pavilion at Orange Showground, the Expo will feature a range of exhibitors who’ll be providing expert advice, goods and services to anyone looking to live more sustainably. “At the Expo, we’ll have a range of Teslas, so a Model 3 and Model Y and Model Y — they’re privately owned and then
we’ve got good support from a lot of the local dealers,” EV users forum coordinator Granton Smith said. Hyundai, BMW and MG will be all displaying some of their EV models, he said. “And we have the MG dealer bringing a couple of the MG4s… so they are one of the newer entrants into the EV market in Australia and they are one of the cheaper ones as well, so it’s good to have broader options for people,” Granton said The expo is also a chance for people to meet and chat with EV owners, who will be able to answer any questions people have about driving an electric vehicle. “I’ve driven an EV for three years now and I charge mostly at home, which is super convenient because the car is ready to go whenever I need to go somewhere,” Granton said. “And it is also pretty cheap for me because I have rooftop solar, so my fuel costs are nearly nothing.” Recently, Granton even drove his Tesla Model 3 with standard range all the way to

Winton in Central West Queensland. “There were a few overnight stops and overnight charging in caravan parks and then mostly rapid charging on the road… overall the cost of charging was about a third of what it would cost if I was in my petrol car,” he said. “It requires a bit of planning and forethought for the road trip but I think being able to road trip into the middle of Queensland shows that it is possible… maybe not quite as convenient but a third of the cost is hard to beat!” From 10am to 3pm in the Civic Centre Council Car Park on Sunday, November 5, Granton and other local EV owners will be giving community members a chance to experience driving in an EV at a “show and ride” day. “We are meeting at the Civic Centre Car Park and will be taking bookings at the Expo or by email and of course anyone who wants to approach us on the day,” Granton said. “If anyone has a particular interest in a
particular car they can book a timeslot for a bit of a drive and talk with an owner about the ownership experience. “I really find with Electric vehicles it’s going for a ride in one that is the thing that sells most people and they have that “aha” moment… just the quietness, there is no vibration, there is no harshness and the torque is absolutely amazing!” The Orange Sustainable Living Expo takes place in the Naylor Pavilion at Orange Showground, from 9am to 2pm this Sunday, October 29. Other events planned for Orange Sustainable Living Week include: community garden tours; a sustainable cooking competition for high school students; Ploughmans Creek wetlands walk; an inspection of a local off-grid house; and a planting day at the Waratah Wetlands. Helen McAnulty’s lifelong work adding ‘colour and vibrancy’ to the dry facts of history
F
or nearly 50 years, in towns across NSW, Helen McAnulty has diligently recorded stories of the past. Readers of Orange City life will be familiar with her work, which she presents in her long-running ‘History Talking’ column.
Helen first began collecting stories in the 1970s when she and her husband Bill —also a teacher— were posted to a school in Nyngan.
Now a resident of Uniting Wontama, Helen is continuing her quest and has formed a new oral history group in the aged care facility.
“Now Arthur had been in the First World War. And he told me about his life, his family coming out in the 1860s, driving cattle out to places where he was living, which was near Coolabah.”
“Behind every face, there’s a story,” says Helen, which is a phrase that has become something of a slogan for her work over the years. “When I came here I thought, Well, there couldn’t be a better place to do it.” For Helen, a former school teacher, it is the everyday things of the past, rather than politics or sweeping national incidents that attract her interest. It’s about adding colour and vibrancy to the dry facts of history, is how she puts it.
“As we always did, we joined the historical association,” recalls Helen. “And there, at the local history group, I met a most amazing man called Arthur Hall.
But one story Arthur didn’t volunteer was that as a 21-year-old Corporal, he’d rushed a machine gun post, shooting four of the enemy, capturing nine others along with two machine guns. The following day, during a heavy barrage, he carried a wounded comrade to safety. Throughout all this, he is said to have “showed utter disregard [for the enemy] and inspired confidence in all”. Arthur was awarded a Victoria Cross for his actions. “And he didn’t tell me that, until I found out!”

says Helen. “And I thought ‘behind every face, there’s a story’.” It was this encounter with Arthur Hall that saw Helen begin to record people’s stories. At first, she would simply interview people one-on-one, but she soon discovered that getting people talking in a group could be much more interesting. “After we lived in Nyngan, we moved to Gulgong,” says Helen, who of course joined the local historical society. “One day a group of elderly people were gathered at the museum and I asked them about when the water supply had been brought to Gulgong. And, they reminded each other of things… and I thought this is much better than one-toone because the interviewer tends — without realising it sometimes — to put ideas in the person’s head. With a group, you don’t do that as much and the group takes over and it’s fascinating what comes up,” Helen continues.
“And I heard some amazing stories of early Gulgong and the early miners because this was 1980 and these people had been born at the end of the last century.” For more than 20 years, Helen continued to collect these stories through her oral history group in Gulgong and began to compile the stories in articles for the Mudgee Guardian under the title “History Talking”. After moving to Orange around 2008, she formed a new group, who have provided the material for Helen’s many contributions to this magazine. “And when I came to Wantama, I realised that this is the most amazing place for life stories. So I’ve started an oral history group, which the staff is very keen to have.” The new Wontama oral history group have begun meeting fortnightly, with Helen recording and planning to continue writing up the results as she has for many decades. You will find the first “History Talking” from the new group on page 8.

Bushfire! While bushfires near Gulgong have been in the news lately, memories of past fires spring to mind. A few years ago I talked to the people of Gulgong about a devasting blaze in the same area about fifty years ago. On Sunday, 16th December, 1970, a senior police officer was investigating a routine police matter when he noticed a plume of smoke to the north of Gulgong. “Fire sends its own signals”, said Bruce “ and this was a definite message that something big was going on”. The Senior Constable proceeded towards Birrawa to investigate what indeed was happening. At Black Bull Hill he found dozens of men with trucks and pumps , fighting what was proving to be a fruitless battle. Meanwhile, on their property 23 kms north of Gulgong the Croft family had been busy. “When an urgent call to a bushfire comes, its a two way operation for husband and wife,” said Mrs Croft.” “The men rush to top up the water tanks, check the fuel and attend to pumps without wasting a minute. The women fill water coolers, make sandwiches and raid cake tins. We make sure that, as well as long sleeved shirts and trousers, overalls and pullovers are taken. If the men have to stay all night, there’s very little sleep for those at home, waiting and wondering.” This was going to be a long, hard fight. One resident of Dunedoo remembered that Sunday dawning hot and ominously sullen, with smoke from bushfires, already burning on the Blue Mountains hanging heavily in the air.

“A lot of it was a blur,”continued Colin.
There are always wonderful stories of courage and survival to be told in the aftermath of such calamities.
“Everything seemed to go at a million miles an hour and the fire licked whole flats up.
The people in the surrounding properties, villages and towns were unstinting in their generosity and help.
It went through in a small front behind the shearing shed and it was double the height of the shed, although it was only burning grass.
Two stories stay in my mind after speaking with these survivors.
Bill had been born and raised in that area and knew it well. When the wind changed to a hot northerly about 9am, he had a premonition that things were going to deteriorate, and the smell of smoke convinced him. “The first fire started on Black Bull Hill to the south of Birrawa about noon and burned into Black Mountain”, Bill said. “The second fire began on the Dunedoo/ Dubbo road and this was the one that swept to the south of Dunedoo, destroying farming and grazing land and menacing the township of Birrawa.” The scorching wind blew fiercely all that afternoon. “It was only by superhuman effort that the township was saved, bearing in mind that our youngest and fittest men were away in Gulgong,” Bill said. Among the heroes that day were the farm dogs, who obediently and valiantly rounded up sheep, although many were crippled by burned paws which lasted for weeks afterwards. Tragedy was to strike that afternoon. Colin was having lunch when he noticed the smoke. “I drove to meet the fire but although we had 15 small trucks with tanks and pumps, we just couldn’t contain it. We knew that another fire was coming, so I raced back to

his plane and Ken on the two way radio we were able to establish when there was no further threat.”
The people of. Dunedoo and Birrawa were going about their business - some to church, some to the local swimming pool and others just taking it easy on their day off.

The fire came through and took the shearing sheds and yards in a mighty inferno.
The whole place was lit up. We realised then, when the house caught, that nothing could be done, and it was a matter of survival.” During this horror a 13 year old boy was manning the pump on the back of his father’s truck.The vehicle stalled and the boy jumped out to try to run to safety. Tragically his body was found later against the ruins of the house. “The wind was knocked out of us after that”, said Colin. “I also had to take shelter with my hands over my head as the fire swept over. There was nothing else we could do, so my father drove me into town. When we arrived at the house my sister-inlaw let out a scream at the sight of me. It was only then that I realised that the skin was hanging in shreds from my arms and I had no hair. Colin spent ten days in Gulgong hospital with other burns victims. The fires were finally controlled by the valiant efforts of many people. Up until Xmas Day patrols were checking for spot fires. Bill remembered: “ With the help of Vin in
When Colin was recovering in hospital, a nurse came into the ward to enquire if anyone had lost a dog, because one was sitting on Colin’s burnt clothes, which had been discarded outside and nothing would entice her to leave. She was, of course ,Colin’s dog who had somehow found her way to Gulgong and to the hospital to be with her master. The other tale of quick thinking was told to me by Mrs Croft. Her husband and son and four other boys were caught by the sudden change of wind and were forced to jump into the dam. The fire roared over them while they remained, treading water, hats over their heads, with their eyes and noses just peeping out at water level. But Colin told me about one of those small miracles that sometimes occur in the midst of tumult. “We had a pet lamb and a young stud Kelpie dog. The fire went through the house, destroying nearly everything, when suddenly, out of the debris, sauntered the lamb and pup together, quite calmly, as if nothing had happened!” copyright. The three-day event, October 19–21, attracted players from Sydney the ACT and up and down the east coast of NSW. The Orange Croquet Club hosted and officiated the tournament which was played under Advantage Golf Croquet rules. Tournament Director Tik Mills said the visiting players love coming to Orange and keep coming back year after year.

The 2023 Cadia Open Day was a spectacular success that welcomed over 2,000 attendees, while simultaneously commemorating a significant milestone: 25 years of mining in the Cadia district for Newcrest. ORANGE CELEBRATES NAIDOC WEEK PHOTOS BY CEC TILBURG Orange’s annual celebration of Indigenous culture, NAIDOC week, officially got underway on Monday, October 23 with a street march along Summer Street to Robertson Park for the opening ceremony and flag raising, followed by an award presentation to local Indigenous students and a sausage sizzle. The week-long celebration will conclude with the NAIDOC Community Awards Night at the Orange Ex-Services’ Club on Saturday, October 28. Don’t forget to stop by the Orange Regional Museum to see the special NAIDOC Week exhibit celebrating local elders through the eyes of the next generation.

ny weekend is a great weekend to explore the historic heritage-listed Millthorpe Village, but if you are a passionate gardener or just love to explore beautiful spaces and places you won’t want to miss the Millthorpe Garden Ramble on November 4–5. Now in its 19th year, the annual Ramble has seen visitors from far and wide to Millthorpe to explore the many stunning gardens and unique gardens, both large and small, found within the village and on surrounding rural properties. This year, event organisers have once again come up with another ten fabulous gardens, from gardens belonging to historic houses to gardens with sweeping rural vistas. A Night of Grief and Mystery A Night of Grief and Mystery is a “provocation” and an “engagement with a dilemma,” says Canadian author/culture activist, Stephen Jenkinson.

Combining stories and observations drawn from Stephen’s extensive experience working in palliative care, with original songs and sounds from recording musician Gregory Hoskins, A Nights of Grief and Mystery is a theatre experience that transcends genre and language. Over the past eight years, the two artists have toured the show on three continents and have returned to Australia for the first time in over five years.
Formerly the leader of a palliative care counselling team at Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital, Stephen says he came to realise that most people in the Western world are completely unprepared to face their own mortality. He has since set about trying to change the way we die and to help people come to the realisation that death is a fundamental and inevitable part of living.
“My corner of the world is not good with mystery,” explains Stephen. “That is, our education tends to wage war against it and imagine that mystery is some kind of gap in your understanding, some kind of problem to solve, some hole to fill; not as if

“So the Nights of Grief and Mystery is an attempt to reconsider that, but not argumentatively because that tends to be more of the same… You could say it’s a ceremony, where you might ordinarily expect a lecture.”
“As a consequence of working with dying people, It was shocking — I had no idea in the early going — how common a miserable, low-grade, horror-beset, ordinary death actually was in the death trade, but it is exceedingly common,” says Stephen. “And it goes a long way towards explaining

the recourse to antidepressants and sedations of all kinds and now, of course, euthanasia on the one side and the continuing recourse to hallucinogens on the other side. “All of these, to me, suggest too little too late. Panic attack. When all of these things were imminently and utterly foreseeable…. “I’ve heard it a million times: Everybody knows they’re going to die. Honestly, If that was true I would never have had a job to do, because everything would have been a foregone conclusion. A given. Part of the fabric of the way it is and in no sense of the term, a calamity, or a catastrophe, or even a problem to solve.” The Nights of Grief and Mystery is not about giving all the answers, but rather engaging with the question itself, says Stephen. “You can’t fix something, you don’t know is there?” says Stephen, “Without an understanding of what’s missing, every solution will be another iteration of what’s
missing. So we don’t engage in solutions, we engage in a real-time encounter with the real thing. “I should say, it’s not a death-specific show, and it’s called Nights of Grief and Mystery for a reason. It’s to celebrate and entertain the real possibility that there’s deep education of the spirit available when you engage matters that are mysterious and grief-laden. “Grief is not the same thing as sadness; grief is an understanding that picks up where sadness finally falls. Love shows up frequently, increasingly in the show… A celebration of the ordinary everydayness of marriage appears and an enormously concerned regard for the near future of young people is there in spades. “So, it’s a prayerfulness, you could say, that picks up where theatre perhaps ends off.” See Stephen Jenkinson and Gregory Hoskins A Night of Grief and Mystery 7.30pm at Orange Civic Theatre on Tuesday, October 31. Belinda has a project focused on improving health outcomes and social participation for women in our area and to this end, is looking to start a pickle ball club!

Having two classes of disaster assistance in NSW effectively means there are two classes of citizens. It is simply not good enough. Equality in disaster assistance needs to be delivered without delay. The recent announcement that the NSW Government had provided our local councils with some emergency road funding is welcome news, but more is going to be needed and it needs to be delivered on the double. There is still a massive infrastructure backlog right across our region. The cynical way in which our residents have been treated by major parties and governments is one of the reasons I became an independent. I won’t be letting this issue go until our residents are treated with equality and respect by governments.

PRESSURE INJURY
PREVENTION Benefits of staying active and healthy as you age include increased wellbeing and participation, faster recovery, reduced risk of chronic disease, and prevention of falls and pressure injuries. Here are tips to prevent pressure injuries from Western NSW Local Health District:
What is a pressure injury? Damage to the skin caused by unrelieved pressure and/or horizontal forces, also commonly called pressure sores, pressure ulcers or bed sores. If left untreated or undetected they can often cause pain, discomfort or become infected. Signs that show your skin might be damaged include: ● Ongoing, isolated pain not related to a surgical wound.
● Very cold areas of skin, indicating poor circulation.
What can cause a pressure injury? Many things cause pressure injuries, which usually develop around the bony parts of our body. Some of the most common causes include: ● Changes to health, or illness.
● Reduced mobility. ● Poor nutrition and hydration, including weight changes. ● Reduced sensation to pressure on skin, due to diabetes, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis. ● Urinary and faecal incontinence.
● Blistering.
● Use of medical devices, tubing and catheters.
● Warm/cool areas of skin.
● Immobile or unable to reposition yourself.
o Use a PH-balanced soap and consider water-based moisturiser on your skin to help prevent drying and flaking.
● Underweight, eating poorly or have recent weight loss.
● Speak to an Occupational Therapist about adaptive equipment if you have difficulty changing position or relieving pressure from your body, including:
● Overweight. ● Incontinent.
o Cushions
How do I prevent pressure injuries?
● Excess moisture or dryness of skin.
● Dry patches or shiny areas across the damaged site.
● Look after your skin, keeping your skin clean and dry.
● Experiencing reduced sensation/feeling.
● Previous history.
● Red/bruised or dark-looking skin.
● Swelling.
● Older or very young.
Who is at risk? You have an increased risk of developing a pressure injury if you are:
o Mattresses, and beds which support alternating positions.
● Exercise, move and shift position as much as possible. If you can’t move by yourself, ask your carer to help. Even slight changes in position can help.
o Heel offloading boots and wedges
What if I think I, or my loved one has a pressure injury?
o Exercising, even gently, helps keep blood moving around your body, nourishing your skin.
Try to change positions to relieve the pressure from the site immediately and contact your healthcare professional/GP for assessment.
● Maintaining a healthy, well-balanced diet and adequate fluid intake can aid in preventing pressure injuries.
A pressure injury may look minor, such as a small patch of red skin, but they can hide more damage under the surface. If you are ever in doubt, speak to your health professional.
o If you are losing weight or concerned about your diet, be sure to contact your GP or local community health dietitian for advice.

My love for frozen peas
A reader asked me the other day if there are any frozen vegetables worth getting? My answer was clear: Yes there are!
I want to keep sharing with all of you my obsession with spring flavours and the crispy greens that are popping out from our region’s soil. I look at my garden and I see the awesome stone fruit developing in the trees, the busy bees pollinating from flower to flower, the smell of sunny days… However, there are still some chilly days in the Central West. That’s why – despite loving a good salad – I’m going to open my freezer and show you a quick and easy
recipe for a delicious lunch or dinner. I’m talking about the underestimated frozen peas! Not many people talk about how useful this product is but you can make entrees, soups, side dishes, tapas, risottos, etc.
Why are peas so good? Because they are an amazing source of fibre, vitamins C and E, zinc and other antioxidants that will strengthen your immune system. On top of that, they can help you reduce inflammation and lower your risk of chronic conditions, including diabetes, heart disease and arthritis. Finally, from a home
cook common sense point of view, they are very economical, easy to use, and they are delicious! Of course if you have fresh peas in your spring garden, use those. But for the rest of the mortals (like me), I’m going to recommend always hasving a bag of them in the freezer. You won’t regret it. (FYI yep, you can use the frozen pea bag for those little bumps your kids have playing in the backyard, too.)
Catalan chef Ferran Adriá, the chef who changed modern gastronomy with his restaurant El Bulli, taught many homecooks
that it was OK to use frozen peas in your cooking. “In fact, sometimes they are even better,” he used to say. The trick is to cook them fast in order to fully appreciate the quality of these little flavoursome balls. For today’s recipe I’m going to make a classic in Spanish gastronomy: guisantes con jamón. You just need garlic, extra virgin olive oil, smoked pimentón and seasoning. This will be the base for you to add any protein you like on top. I personally prefer jamón serrano and an olive oil-fried egg. But you can obviously use ham, chorizo, etc.
Peas with Jamón Serrano INGREDIENTS: - 3 garlic cloves, chopped small
- Splash of extra virgin olive oil
- 1 cup peas, defrosted.
- 1/2 tsp smoked pimentón
- Seasoning
- 100 gr jamón serrano, thinly sliced
- 1 egg, fried.
- splash of white wine (optional)
METHOD: 1. In a frypan add olive oil and garlic. Turn your stove on and fry it until light golden. 2. Add the smoked pimentón, quickly stir it before it gets burnt and then add the peas. 3. Add the seasoning and a splash of white white or water. Let it reduce till desired consistency. A little bit of sauce will be delicious! 4. Taste and adjust seasoning. 5. Add the jamón now, toss it quickly and serve on a plate with a fried egg.

‘EPIC’ FOLK QUARTET THE HEART COLLECTORS AT ROSNAY CELLAR DOOR, OCTOBER 29 THE GATHERING BELTANE BALL RETURNS The Gathering Beltane Ball, Orange’s own celebration of the Gaelic spring festival, is back for the first time since Covid restrictions. Hosted by Earth Spirit, the Gathering Beltane Ball will take place on Saturday, November 4 at Orange City Bowling Club. The ball is a fancy dress affair with people asked to attend in their best “Medieval” finery. There will be fun activities, a smorgasbord dinner, prizes for the “best dressed” and live music from local band the Shindig Kickers. The night goes from 6.30pm to 11.30pm and promises to be a celebration of life, love and happiness.
Internationally acclaimed ‘epic’ folk quartet The Heart Collectors are teaming up with Canowindra’s most sought-after organic wine producer for a ‘Sounds till Sundown’ event at Rosnay Cellar Door on October 29. Known for their tightly knit harmonies, cosmic ‘Bowie-esque’ themes, folkpop ballads, and sing-along anthems, come along and experience the sound that’s catching the folk music world by storm. The band has a jam-packed schedule in the lead-up to their headlining International Tour and release of their fifth studio album, ‘The Space Between’ (set for global release in February 2024) and are performing for one night only in the region. How are you processing the recent flare-up of war in the Middle East? It has been utterly tragic to see the violence explode yet again as Palestine and Israel find themselves in armed conflict. The humanitarian crisis that has opened up as a result of this latest conflict is going to have significant ramifications for years to come. As we see the violence and loss of life continue to escalate, it makes us wonder: how long is this going to continue? As Israel prepares for a ground invasion, the world is waiting with bated breath to see if this will see surrounding nations enter into the war. While this conflict continues to grow, it is easy to take our minds off the other conflicts in the world, such as the war in Ukraine and other parts of the world. As the news cycle finds itself consumed with this conflict we, too, can become consumed as we await the latest updates about what is happening and how other countries are responding. Humanly speaking there does not seem to be an easy end to this latest conflict. It seems as if the longing for revenge is having the same effect as pouring petrol on a fire. I am not going to go into detail about the religious undertones that are a key factor that is playing into this conflict, and many may say that what is happening here is a direct example of why religion is bad for our world. And to be honest, I do agree with this statement, if by ‘religion’ we mean a dogmatism
that does not see people as deserving of dignity and respect. That sees a quest for power at all costs, as the driving force behind what one does. Or a blind following of laws that demand war rather than peace. That calls for justice rather than mercy. But that is not what Jesus calls his followers to be like. In fact, in so much of Jesus’ teaching, he condemns these acts and ways of thinking. Instead, he brought grace. And one day, there will be an end to all war, violence and suffering. That is going to be a wonderful day. He promised to do so. In Revelation 21:4 it says this about what Jesus is going to do: ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’ And it is this promise that I hold onto as I think about the state of our world and the countless acts of senseless violence that are being committed, whether by nations or by individuals. I grieve what is happening in the Middle East. I am certainly praying for an end to this senseless violence. And maybe that is what you can be doing, too. Praying to God that he would act to bring about peace to this hurting and weary world. This is the very reason why Jesus came.

The annual debate competition is part of the youth program of the Rotary Club of Orange North and is sponsored each year by Dudley Private Hospital, who generously donate the prize money. A large crowd of supporters from both schools as well as Rotarians witnessed a high level of debating from the Year 9 and 10 students.
Other high schools that competed in the preliminary rounds of the debate included Orange Christian School, Orange Anglican Grammar School and Canobolas High School. The Dudley Debating Cup has been contested among local and district high schools since 1992 and was the idea of Orange North Rotarian Geoff Riley who was also a former CEO of Dudley Hospital.

A hard-fought battle over the topic, ‘That school should start later in the day’ resulted in a narrow win to the Kinross Wolaroi School over James Sheahan Catholic High School at the recent final of the Dudley Debating Cup.
Adjudicators Heather Grant and Meredith Healey praised the efforts of the students and assured the debaters that they were ‘all winners’.

It was great to see such a good roll up for our October meeting. We nearly had to put out the “full house” sign. The more the merrier! And it got better. To celebrate Probus Month we enjoyed a Luncheon with the three Orange clubs and Probians from Blayney. It was a most enjoyable occasion with lots of FUN, FELLOWSHIP and FRIENDSHIP for the almost 100 guests attending. Each of the four Presidents shared a short resume of their Club’s various activities. There were some good ideas expressed that may be taken up by other clubs. The Orange Ex-Services’ Club served a most satisfying lunch. Induction: Gary Morgan was inducted to Probus, and will join in the FUN, FRIENDSHIP and FELLOWSHIP of Probus. Gary introduced himself as an Orange “boy” who qualified as a Fitter and Tool
Maker, and spent many years at Email, before setting up his own business. He is enjoying his retirement and keeps his hand in at the Orange Men’s Shed. Welcome Gary. Life Membership Award: Max Ball was presented with this Award in recognition of his long membership, and contribution to Probus. Birthdays: Gerry Sloane was the lone birthday boy in October. Guest Speaker: Vanessa Gaynor is an Exercise Physiologist who manages the Seniors Gymnasium in Orange. She develops exercise programs for seniors to very old age to keep them mobile and healthy and enjoying life. It is necessary to consult a doctor (GP) to assess the scope of exercise to be undertaken. Muscle strength begins to reduce from 30 years

Loss of strength results in loss of balance which can result in falls. Breathing is an important part of exercise. (It is only a rumour that First Aid was on hand, as we were not required to do any exercise on the day). Insurance costs us, but be assured, we have cover for members, guests and visitors.

THUMBS DOWN again to the Orange City Council for the Blue Tree in Woodward Street. As an old woodcarter or anyone with good eyesight could see the large cracks in the tree, it was only a matter of time before it fell over. Luckily no one was hurt, and as far as erecting a steel tree, another waste of ratepayers money. Cut the rest of it down and leave a blue stump if you think it helps someone. THUMBS DOWN too people who have nothing better to do than to complain about tradies loud music. I’m sure all my fellow tradies would agree. to the staff and students of Calare Public School for the All Over the World Show. The amount of effort needed by all to put on a show, which included all the children, was outstanding. WITH LYDIA SMITH In July 2017 my hearty husband of 35 years was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. He’d been unwell for a couple of weeks, so the doctor ordered blood tests “just to rule out anything nasty”. Which which it was. After ten months of gruelling chemotherapy, complications and surgery, we were told nothing more could be done. He passed quietly away at home, surrounded by his family. Coming to terms with life on my own has been a journey. I’ve been so thankful for family, friends, and church. I discovered each day that although I’m “on my own”, I’m not alone. For those who trust in Jesus, he promises: “I am with you always.” Although grief rips through me at times, I am so thankful for the presence of Jesus, calming me, supporting me, helping me lift my bowed head. King David wrote a song about his trials: “Even though I walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death.” In a modern world where loneliness is at an all-time high, look to the goodness of Jesus. Through any trial, those who have placed their hope in Jesus know that he is with them. He can be with you always.
