New councillor, Dr Steve likes keeping things in the positive New Orange City Councillor, Steve Peterson, likes keeping things in the positive. Despite a chance accident that four years ago completely changed his life, he sees a series of opportunities rather than impediments, an approach he is taking to his new role as an elected councillor. From this perspective, he believes there is much that can be improved regarding accessibility and transport in the Colour City. “I like to think of things that are positive and in the interests of the community, such as improved roads and footpaths,”

he said. “Accessibility is one of those things that is pretty essential, speed humps, entry to shops, kerbs with no ramps… one of the hardest places to get around, is Robertson Park,” he said. “It would be a small thing to do, but it may be just one of those things that they just haven’t thought about,” he said. To make these changes a reality, rather than just a handy election slogan, he says that money may have to be allocated from

the proposed stadium for south Orange.

“If necessary, we may have to see redistribution of resources to achieve that, to make these things a priority in Orange,” he said. “I’d like to see us at least have a conversation about that.”

With his wide-ranging opinions on a variety of subjects, he thinks that the new Council has a great opportunity to make a fresh start on a number of matters central to the long-term prosperity of the district.

...Diversity isn’t an end in itself, but a means to an end. As it so happens, we have some wonderful new councillors in this current group...

Elected as top of the “Refresh Orange” ticket in last December’s poll, his unique background mix — a medical doctor who spent part of his childhood in Beijing and who is now wheelchair-bound after his car-bicycle collision — offers the “diversity” that so many bemoaned about the previous council. He believes, however, that this should not be the key feature defining who we are and what we achieve.

trained GP explained.

“I hope so, that all of the councillors bring something different in their perspectives. Diversity isn’t an end in itself, but a means to an end. As it so happens, we have some wonderful new councillors in this current group,” he added.

With his working life as a doctor, he recalls little of his accident, reflecting on the tragic irony of his having left a shift at the Orange Hospital, to be struck down by a car as he peddled home, and returning back on the same day as a patient.

Cr Peterson still works as a GP providing invaluable online consultancies to small rural hospitals like Molong and Cobar through the “Virtual Rural Generalist Service" and "Remote GP" Service.

“I was working in the emergency department, and I got hit cycling home, and ended up back there a few hours later, though I don’t remember anything of it,” he said.

“It works surprisingly well; the majority of all but the most serious cases, we can manage remotely, because some of these towns simply can’t get doctors 24/7 and this assists local staff,” the Australian National University-

“I think there will be issues where we should do better than the Council before, such as roads, footpaths, and water resources,” he said. He said that, while two perfect rainfall years may have pushed water security to the back of the pile, the problem will return, sooner or later, with even greater urgency. “The reason is, that in the next drought, we will have thousands more people and the population will have grown. “We should look to store the water when we have the floods. I appreciate the water harvesting scheme to get the most out of our current supplies, but if there’s no storms, there’s no harvesting,” he said. He believes that Council will eventually have to look at a large infrastructure project to increase supply. If this is a new dam or increased capacity for the current dams, that is a bullet that will have to be bitten at some point. “I’m thinking that some sort of increased storage capacity, will have to happen sometime,” he concluded.

LET'S TALKmoney with DANIEL McGREGOR

BECOME A FINANCIAL MASTER CHEF

I

magine you wanted to make the greatest dish you’ll ever serve in your life… what would you need to make sure it was a success? You would need a recipe, high-quality ingredients and time.

will be and the less pressure you will find yourself under. Most Australians wake up at 55 and the alarm bells go off. That’s why most people don’t take financial planning seriously until after they are 55. Our mission is to help as many people as possible use tried and tested recipes for financial success, combined with whatever time and ingredients they have to create a dish worthy of a financial master chef. How long will you wait before you get cracking?

Cooking up a successful financial future needs exactly the same things. RECIPE: Just like the classic dishes we all know and love, there are time-tested and proven ways to manage money that will deliver results for anyone prepared to follow the recipe. When it comes to money, most people are throwing all their ingredients in a bowl and hoping they somehow come together. Are you following a recipe when it comes to managing your money?

The point is that when it comes to cooking, if we want to cook well, we follow the process that works. When it comes to money, common sense often goes out the window whilst fear, ignorance and procrastination stop people getting the results they deserve.

P.S. Have you ever noticed the best recipes are often the simplest? It’s the same with money! HIGH-QUALITY INGREDIENTS: Watch any ‘foodie’ show on TV or go to any nice restaurant in town and you’ll see they often use only a few ingredients, just great quality ones treated with the respect they deserve. You’ve got the starting ingredient when it comes to money – an income. The

next step is to find some savings (even if it’s just a little to get started), then mix in a high-quality super fund, smart and diversified investments, value-for-money mortgage and insurances and all of a sudden you have the best ingredients to start putting together your recipe. How confident are you that your ingredients are worthy of what you’re wanting to serve up later in life for you and

Just as we all have the ability to learn to cook, we all have the ability to learn to manage our money successfully.

your family? TIME: You’ll no doubt have seen how cooking shows on TV use time pressure to make things dramatic, “5, 4, 3, 2, 1!”. If you had one chance to cook for your life, how much time and preparation would you put into it? Your financial future is no different. The sooner you start working on this, the better. The more time you have to prepare and work with, the better your results

Follow the recipes passed down through generation, completely independent and free from the conflicts of financial products, and you will see your net worth rocket upwards over time.

Cheers, Daniel
