“I'm here to serve”: Reality of a career as a pharmacist — BY STEPH ALLEN —
As the world looked towards preventative measures to tackle the pandemic, pharmacists were inundated with demand for masks, RATs, and vaccination appointments.
The choice to pursue a career as a pharmacist is one not only about developing trust with customers but also helping them find relief. Blooms The Chemist Orange owner, Melanie Moses has been a pharmacist for 11 years and an owner for more than nine. “I love that pharmacy enables me to help people every day, and I find learning about health and finding solutions really fascinating,” she said. To become a pharmacist, one must graduate with a Year 12 HSC certificate, complete a four-year Bachelor of Pharmacy, and a one-year internship upon graduation, before undertaking registration exams to become fully registered. As a career heavily involved in working with people, “empathy and compassion” are a must.
“Particularly as many people who come to see us may be feeling vulnerable or confused,” Melanie said. “Being highly ‘detail-orientated’ is also an essential quality, to ensure you’re delivering to the highest professional industry standard. “A love for problem-solving and great communication skills, will also ensure you’re successful as a pharmacist.” As a community pharmacist, Melanie has developed trust with her customers after making connections with generations of families. “It’s the best feeling, when you’re able to use your expertise to recommend a solution to someone and improve their situation,” she said. “It’s so rewarding, when people come back to let you know it’s made a positive difference for them or that it meant a lot to them that you were available, even just

to listen and be there for them. “I also really love running a business and all that that entails, building the right team, developing our team culture, seeing their successes and accomplishments. “We’ve also recently been announced as a ‘2022 Pharmacy of the Year’ Finalist; it’s really gratifying to be recognised in this way.” However, the rewarding career is not without its challenges. “At times it can be a very stressful profession. Pharmacists often put a lot of pressure on ourselves to ensure we’re meeting multiple priorities and strict professional regulations,” Melanie said. “Because we do care about people and their outcomes, it can take a lot of emotional energy. “You have to show up every day with a real ‘I’m here to serve’ mentality.”
“The initial surge in demand for certain products and being the first point-ofcontact for a lot of people when they’re sick, when they need advice; it put a lot of pressure on pharmacy teams over the past two years,” Melanie said. “But being asked to support the national COVID-19 vaccination program, really made it clear that pharmacists are one of the most accessible healthcare professionals, and are essential to the delivery of healthcare for individuals and the community. “Pharmacy is such an incredibly rewarding career; it’s given me endless opportunities to combine my passions and really make a difference. I can’t imagine being anything other than a pharmacist,” Melanie concluded.

Hook wants to change the way we do politics — BY STEPH ALLEN —
❚ Kate Hook is running as an independent candidate for the seat of Calare.
Independent candidate for Calare, Kate Hook looked at what the future held for her children, and was worried.
“After raising four children, I’m concerned about the future they are facing, and that the state of politics in Australia currently is not fit for purpose to deal with our biggest challenges and to make the most of our great opportunities,” she said. “I can no longer stand on the sideline and watch yet another electoral cycle of inaction. “As an independent, I am free to put communities and truth first, without the

The Borenore local has joined the campaign trail against sitting MP, Andrew Gee, with her main focus ensuring Calare is no longer “taken for granted as a ‘safe seat’”.
Some of the issues Ms Hook has become aware of include strong regional economies, regional health care access, climate management and planning that looks after farmers, rivers, and funded and equitable education opportunities.
“I want to see trust restored in our political leaders after years of poor leadership, and poor performance by the government in many areas of critical importance for our health, well-being, economy and environment,” Ms Hook said. “I would ensure that party politics, unduly influenced by big donors, does not get in the way of good, evidence-based policy.” Looking towards nationwide changes in politics, Ms Hook cited the project “Voices for Calare” which provides citizens with a platform to voice concerns via: “kitchen table conversations”. “For many, this was the first time they had the opportunity to talk about politics or about issues that matter to them,” she said. “I've continued this in my campaign, travelling to different towns and villages and listening to the people who live there.
...What needs to change in politics is truth, evidence and community needs coming first, before a politician’s own career, party factions and the need to follow a party line... “If we can have more independents in parliament, who are there to truly represent their communities, respect and consider their opinions, who can judge each issue on its merits and constantly communicate their position back to their voters, people will feel more connected to their representative and have more certainty about the political environment as
BRIEF Fashion show on for Ionian Club’s birthday
What makes Ms Hook the right fit for the job? According to her, her track record of caring for the community, bringing people together and understanding community issues speaks for itself.
Want to help Orange Ionian Club celebrate their birthday bash? This year the group — designed to make newcomers welcome to the Colour City — will celebrate their 48th Birthday on Thursday April 7, with a lunch and fashion parade, organised by the “Two Fat Ladies” boutique at Duntryleague Golf Club.
“What needs to change in politics is truth, evidence and community needs coming first, before a politician’s own career, party factions and the need to follow a party line,” she said. “I have not been a typical ‘career politician’... but bring real-life experience to the role. “As a female candidate, I want to inspire younger women and girls to consider representing their communities.
The Club meets at Duntryleague Golf Club at 11am on the second Thursday of the month.
“We need to bring more gender equity to the parliament, so more female candidates being elected as representatives will be a great start.”

HISTORYTALKING
with Helen McNulty
s y a d i l o h r e Summ
“When the merry bells keep ringing, May your every wish come true. May the calendar keep bringing Happy holidays to you.”
Our summer holidays have been a bit different for many people this year with the threat of the virus hanging over us and travel restrictions stopping many of us from going very far afield. But it’s fun to look back at the carefree days of our youth when holidays were much simpler. When Irving Berlin wrote the above lyrics, he was probably thinking of snowy Christmas holidays with sleigh bells and roaring log fires and hot drinks to keep out the cold. But that is in the northern hemisphere where Christmas holidays are in the depths of winter; when the sun sets in the early a ernoon, the mornings are dark and freezing, and the countryside is bunkered-down for a long, cold, miserable wait for spring. On the other side of the world, when we finally say goodbye to Santa and all the Christmas trimmings, we have the whole of summer in front of us and can look forward to months of long, hot days, mostly clear blue skies, and the wonderful ear-piercing sound of the cicadas. Of course, we do have a few hazards like bushfires and drought and flooding rains, but very li le can spoil the enthusiasm we feel for long, lazy days on the beach, listening to the cricket, surfing, and swimming and just enjoying doing nothing.
“We stayed at Mosman and the magic city lights — the lights on the streets and on the ferries, the moving traffic and the picture theatres held us spellbound.
was the thought expressed by Joan, who grew up with the beach on her doorstep and remembers wonderful summers of swimming, sun-baking, and fishing.
“We loved stopping to listen to people singing or playing the mouth organ at Circular Quay. My mother was shocked when she discovered that my brother and his friend decided to do the same thing at Mosman — singing while I went from door-to-door collecting coppers to buy buns with icing on top.
Guesthouses were popular with those who wanted and could afford a more luxurious holiday and the Blue Mountains was o en the preferred destination. The pre y railway stations with colourful gardens (which we see today on the trip down the mountains) were there to a ract the tourists who in the 1920s, 30s, and 40s flocked in their thousands to enjoy the healthy, invigorating climate, and the entertaining social life offered by the guest houses.
“We were fascinated by the trams, going to the Zoo, or on a ferry to the Quay for tuppence. The hot bubbling tar on the footpath just asking us to burst them, the tall buildings and the escalators and the li s which we used to think were moving rooms!” Many country families took the opportunity to escape the heat in the long school holidays by visiting the coast. Travelling by car in those unrestricted days was quite an adventure. I well remember packing four boys and a dog, together with our holiday equipment, into a fairly ancient station wagon for the long journey to the beach. Seatbelts were non-existent of course, so there was no restraining the activity in the back seat. But when we began the long climb up Victoria Pass, the old car began to boil, so the boys and the dog were forced to walk up the mountain to lighten the load. Needless to say, we all breathed a sigh of relief when the interminable journey was over! Families camped in conditions that might be considered primitive by today's standards.
But was it always like this? Margaret grew up in the dusty western township of Gulargambone in the 1920s. Her father kept the general store and the bright lights were very far away. However, once a year her mother would have to spend time in Sydney visiting warehouses for the business and this gave her children a wonderful opportunity to see the amazing sights of the city. “Going down to the big smoke and travelling in the train was an adventure in itself,” Margaret told us.
Others rented beach co ages, most of which were by no means luxurious. Many were li le more than shacks but, as children, we revelled in the bare wooden floors which became more sandy as the holiday progressed and we slept soundly on the iron bedsteads with threadbare ma resses, o en on the open verandah, where the mosquitoes could feast on us all night. We could run down to the beach and spend all day in the sea. And, when we tired of that, we hopped over the burning sand and stretched out on it, our bare skin protected by nothing except perhaps a li le coconut oil.
Of course, not everyone went away during those long school holidays. Russel, who grew up on a property near Warialda, went to boarding school, but during the vacation, he was given freedom which is probably not enjoyed by children today. When he was about nine, he and his brothers would camp on a hill on the property about two miles from the house and stay there for two or three days. As long as they lit a fire at night, which fortunately could be seen from the house, his mother knew they were safe. Russel assured the rather horrified group that being bush kids, they were thoroughly drilled in the dangers of fire and how to control it. Monica, who also lived in the bush near Eugowra, told us about the games she and her siblings played a er the chores were done. “We had a li le school on our property, but when it shut for the holidays, one of the games we played was, would you believe it: “Schools!” Those long lazy days could be filled with reading, treeclimbing, bike-riding, swimming in the waterhole or creek, or even lying on your back on the ground and gazing at the changing pictures the clouds made. In fact — just doing nothing! Have we lost that art in the frenzied world we live in today? Let's hope not. Copyright Helen McAnulty 2022
