Once known as Armistice Day, it’s our opportunity to commemorate and remember those who fell in the First World War. It wasn’t until after the Second World War that the Australian Government renamed Armistice Day to Remembrance Day, following the United Kingdom’s proposal in doing so. Today, Remembrance Day commemorates the loss of Australian lives from all wars and conflicts from around the world, paying respects for their ultimate sacrifice given for Country.

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS IN THE COUNCIL JOB:
David Hayward’s dedicated craftsmanship — SAMUEL RODWELL —

range City Life had the privilege of interviewing one of our community’s true heart-of-gold legends, David Hayward, who to many is known for his record-breaking achievements as a tenpin bowler, winning multiple national championships. “I won the Australian Deaf Tenpin Bowling Championships – we all meet in different places around Australia, but the last one was held in Orange. My goal was to win it for the 7th time, and I achieved it. There was a lot of pressure because I had the lowest handicap,” David communicated. Although, it’s his latest accomplishment in celebrating his 40th anniversary at Orange City Council on October 26th which brought us together to converse. For people who may not know David personally, he’s lived the majority of his life from a young age not being able to hear, however, the disability has never stopped him in doing what he loves to do. David’s sister and interpreter, Kathy, who works in education was kind enough to be the communicative bridge during our interview. During his four decades of employment in groundskeeping, David has been responsible for caring and maintaining many, if not all, of Orange’s most beloved public spaces and

helping set up seating for the masses to his expertise work of having the grounds perfectly ready for players to kick off on.
green areas. His working journey began at Cook Park where for three years he looked after the grounds from flower beds, raking fallen leaves, weeding and lawn mowing.
When asked what David has enjoyed the most about his job of 40 years, he responds with, “I love the variety of looking after the different sportsgrounds around Orange. I like that it keeps me active and on the move all day,” David conveys before continuing.
He was known by his colleagues for his precise care when gardening and always ensuring the park appeared immaculate for visitors. Regarded even as a perfectionist by his supervisors who stated, “David always has taken pride in the work.”
“Even through the different seasons and weather, I wear my beanie and gloves as it can be freezing. It’s not as busy in the winter months as its cold and the grass isn’t growing as fast. But in the warmer months, it’s busier as the grass grows faster and needs constant mowing in spring and summer. I’ve enjoyed it all.”
David proceeded onto tractor mowing the grounds at various parks and sporting ovals for just over three decades. “I like working on the sportsgrounds because of the wideopen spaces and getting to visit the different locations around town,” David stated.
An interesting fact about David is his method of transport every day to work has been by bike. Which he proceeded to describe many battles with swooping magpies and unfavourable weather while cycling. Luckily, when the weather is on the extreme side, family and friends shout him a lift.
Throughout this period, David completed other roles in maintenance, such as aerating fields to allow better irrigation for healthy grass growth, to troubleshooting tractor mechanical problems by feeling the vibrations and fixing it accordingly. Another regular task for David is line marking for outdoor sports from cricket, softball to touch football in warmer months and with soccer, rugby, hockey and AFL grounds in the cooler months. He was one of the many organisers in prepping Wade Park for national football games, such as Country verses City matches,

While not at work, David is an active family member and uncle who loves spending time with the family and spectating his niece’s netball games and nephew’s indoor cricket. David looks forward to continuing working for many more years before deciding to kick up his feet and retire to enjoy holidaying.

“Lest we forget”, how we treated our war returned

Remembrance Day, or Armistice Day as it is sometimes referred to, has never quite held the same pull on the Australian imagination as our home-grown ANZAC Day ceremonies. At high school, while we would all faithfully troop down to the memorial forest, where a tree had been planted for every student who had fought in the world wars, to commemorate ANZAC Day with speeches and wreath-laying, November 11 usually just involved a two-minute silence in class before we got back to work. Remembrance Day, of course, commemorates the final silencing of the guns on the Western Front thereby ending the Great War (1914–1918) which later became known as World War I. In many ways, the later edition we now know as World War II – just in case we ever have a third, I suppose – dominates our culture and history to a far greater extent. Yet this first edition was the war where much of the selfmythologising of the Australian character comes. The Gallipoli Landing, after which ANZAC Day was commemorated, occurred in the Dardanelles region of Turkey in April 1915 where the ANZAC legend was born, and later on at the western front, the ideal of the Aussie Digger came into being. Our casualties in the first conflict were also far higher – suffering 61,000 men killed and nearly a quarter of a million injured, captured or invalided out of a population of less than five million citizens. In many ways, it was also where the old Victorian world of Charles Dickens and top hats, horse-drawn
carriages, and ladies with parasols, ended. The war started with cavalry charges and bright blue military tunics and “we’ll be home before Christmas”, and became mustard gas and aerial bombing and tank warfare – so much had technology changed in only four years. The world had changed also with picture theatres and Charlie Chaplin and the roaring twenties, massproduced cars, jazz music, and a radio in every home. But while Australia – so far from the battlefields and international rivalries that instigated the war – suffered almost more than any other country, we also led the way in how we treated our returned soldiers. The Australian National Archive held a travelling exhibition a few years ago where they chronicled how the Australian governments essentially went into hock for decades after World War I, so as to provide adequate medical and health care and pensions for the hundreds of thousands of returned men and women of the Australian defence forces. In countries like Russia and Germany and Italy, the returned soldiers led revolutions that eventually resulted in the twin evils of totalitarian communism and fascism. In the United States, old soldiers starved in tent ghettoes in wealthy cities like New York. In Australia, with the support of groups like Legacy and the RSL (Returned Servicemen’s League) and the government disability pensions, we were able to better provide for our service men and women than almost any other country. And that is something worth remembering.

Celebrating the great re-opening, the town is offering a bumper series of events of fun, community pride, and helping-others, which is the hallmark of this historic community north-west of Orange. First cab-off-the-rank is the Molong Night Markets on Friday, December 3, where the main street will become a festival of colour and activity designed to boost hard-hit local businesses looking to a brighter Christmas. Volunteer groups holding stalls include the St Joseph’s School P&C, Molong Pre-School, the hospital auxiliary, and the Museum. “The more people we can get at Molong, the better, it’s a great little town,” Kathy enthused. OCLife overlooking the town being officially opened by Federal Member, Andrew Gee at 1.30pm. The opening is culmination of a $60,000 Federal funding grant for the work that incorporates representations of native birds including eastern rosellas, blue wrens, and spinebills, and surveyor and explorer Thomas Mitchell and his guide, Yuranigh who explored eastern inland Australia to the Gulf Country of Queensland. Organiser Les and Julie Dean from the Grow Molong group designed the artwork on the theme of Molong as the “Gateway to the Central West” with the project not all smooth-sailing. “We had dickens of a time with the weather and COVID and getting artists out to work on it,” Les laughed. “Our artist is on the hillside now doing the scenes of the local birds,” he added. Later that evening, Les and Julie, who are organisers of the local St Johns Ambulance Cadet Group, have organised a wine-tasting event for the “Save Molong” Community Defibrillator Project which aims to place six defibrillators in the community. While the defibrillators will be presented by Local Member, Phil Donato at the wine-tasting, the money raised for the Molong RSL event running-from 3–6pm will pay the balance of the Office of Sport grant under which they were purchased. Held in the RSL auditorium, music will be by guitarist, Phil
Moran, with the night also including an auction. This will include canvas prints of many of the birds used to inspire the water-tower, Les said. The wine-tasting will feature the local Printhie and Cumulus Wines with tickets $60 per person and dress semi-formal. The busy weekend is also the day that all of NSW residents are to vote in the Local Government elections! “Vote early and come along with family and friends to support our wonderful community,” Les said. Another wonderful event on the same day, is the Garden and Classic Car Day featuring some iconoclastic and wonderful items for auction at 76 Spring Vale Lane from 10–4pm. The charity event will raise money for local group, the Molong Pantry food bank and also the mental health advocate and support group, Beyond Blue, The Molong Pantry is supported by the local Baptist Church which provides the building space, insurance, dayto-day logistics and our volunteers come from the whole Molong community. The gold coin entry event includes live music, stalls, and a sausage sizzle, organiser Wendy McNabb explained.
“We’ve all known friends and family where kids have suicided and this our way of helping people in the country,” Wendy said. She wants to see more mental health support for smaller country areas where services are far sparser than for cities, despite mental health issues that are just as prevalent in the bush as the city. “I tried looking on the net, and all the groups are citybased, the country always misses out… and with COVID, people are really struggling,” she added. Parkes Car Club and Molong vintage tractors, trucks, and cars will feature at the garden event. Items already donated for the event include garden sculptures, a push-bike, a pair of boxing champ Jeff Fenech’s boxing gloves, driving lights, and a toolbox. With a great selection of items to auction, Wendy is still looking for more. “We’re still looking for people willing to donate to the cause and give us items to auction off,” she said. Items for auction are still being sought, and anyone interested can call Wendy on 0458 007 059. Chockful of activities, the weekend shows that, nowhere beats the spirit of our small rural communities to help each other out. “Molong on that weekend is going to be the place to be,” Janice Marriott from the Molong Advancement Group said in summary.

Friendships formed on farm that have lasted a lifetime — DAVID DIXON —
Friendships formed during those first trials and hardships of young adulthood often stay with us the rest of our lives. So it is with a group of graduates from the former Wagga Wagga Agricultural College who recently held their biannual reunion at Millthorpe’s Golden Memories Museum. The Class of ‘65 from the College, now part of Charles Sturt University, have been getting together every two years to relive and remember the camaraderie that comes from living day-in, day-out, with a great group of mates.
days allowed the group to develop close bonds with each other with more than 20 of the original student cohort attending the weekend of events, many with their wives (the class at the time was an all-male group). “We were all students together and we remained friends throughout all these years,” he said. “We remained friends, and our wives remained friends.
“It’s basically a reunion of the class of the 1965 crop of the students from Wagga Agricultural College,” local organiser Joe Cummins explained.
“I think it’s fantastic,” his wife Jenny said. “It’s a testament to their friendships, that they were great mates at Wagga, and are still friends,” she added.
“We go around the State and hold it bi-annually, every two years... We’ve held them at such places as Canberra, Port Macquarie, the Hunter Valley, Hay, and even along the Murray River,” he added.
A long shadow was being cast across the country at the time these friendships were being formed. The first stages of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War saw some of the students called up in the ballot for National Service.
“But this is the first we’ve had since COVID. This, in a sense, is our big coming out,” Joe enthused.
The ballot involved birthdates randomly selected on a lottery basis, with nearly half of Australia’s casualties in our decade-long involvement in the conflict being conscripted National Servicemen.
Their sense of common experience, he believes, springs from the small cohort who completed the course together at the then geographically-isolated college. “We were all on campus together and that helped develop a real camaraderie, it was a three-year course but, in that time, lifetime friendships were made,” Joe said. Bill Sheaffe agreed, saying that those more innocent

have remained close friends is an extraordinary testament to the importance of their shared experiences studying agriculture at the college. “One of the more surprising things is the age of this group, how they’ve remained close,” David said. He said that the relatively small and tight-knit nature of their circumstances explained their long friendship. “It was a fairly small group of people and such an intense experience with most of us straight from school, it was a tough cultural journey, living away from home as we all did. “We only had 28 in the year, 22 are here now and 26 are still alive, which is amazing,” he added. The group made a full weekend of their get-together with their main dinner being held at Duntryleague, and a barbecue also planned at a local winery. The group said that the lockdowns of the past two years looked to have cast a pall over the tradition; but recent relaxing of the travel restrictions happened at just the right moment to allow the event to go ahead. “We came from Newcastle, we didn’t know that this was going to happen, but luckily, it all fell into place,” David concluded.

Friends’ famous plant sale bearing fruit next weekend Nov 20-21 Spring 2021 has been the perfect season for work on new and established gardens with fine and mild weather, reduced water restrictions, and ample, regular rainfall.

It’ll soon be time to head down to the annual Friends of the Orange Botanic Gardens famous plant and shrub sale.
“What we sell are plants or cuttings we have propagated ourselves... to raise money for things such as fountains and seats and beautifying the gardens for the benefit of the public,” she added.
As well as thousands of seedlings, plants and saplings on special, this year’s event will also include edible native plant species specially-propagated for the show. Supporting this unique event also helps the important work that the Friends fund at the increasingly-popular Botanic Gardens in north Orange at the top of Hill Street. “We normally hold two a year and have held them for a number of years,” Friends of the Garden President, Susan Sanders, explained. FEDERAL FUNDING GETS THE ORANGE MILE UP AND RUNNING! Elite middle-distance racers, running enthusiasts, athletic families and energetic kids will stride up Summer Street next year in the city’s newest sporting event: Sprint into Summer The Orange Mile!

HONOURING SERVICE AND SACRIFICE ON REMEMBRANCE DAY Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of guns falling silent on the Western Front in the First World War. Each year, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month our nation stands in silent reflection for one minute to commemorate and honour those Australians who have lost their lives in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. Since the First World War, almost two million men and women have worn with pride the uniforms of the Royal Australian Navy, Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force. We remember the generation of Australians who lost their lives, and pay our special respects to the 7,800 veterans with us today who served during the Second World War. As Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel, I was honoured to represent the Prime Minister of Australia and lay a wreath at this year’s
official Remembrance Day ceremony at the Australia War Memorial in Canberra. It is incredibly important that we continue to pause to remember, respect and honour all those who have served and sacrificed so much for Australia. To help raise awareness of the importance of our national commitment to remember, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs distributed Remembrance Day educational resource packs to schools to expand the knowledge of our future generations and ensure we continue the important tradition of honouring all those who have served our country. Lest we forget.
$1.5 MILLION FOR BEASLEY ROAD IMPROVEMENTS, NOW UNDERWAY Safe, reliable roads are essential for our country communities so I am very pelased to see that improvement work is now underway at Beasley Road, between Lucknow and Spring Hill. The work is the first stage of an upgrade to Beasley Road that will cover almost three kilometres from Blunt Road to the intersection with the Mitchell Highway. The improvements are thanks to a $1.5 million Australian Government grant under Round 2 of the Fixing Local Roads Program. One of the silver linings of the COVID-19 pandemic has been the turbo-charging of key investments in country roads, including Beasley Road. These projects help save lives and give country communities an economic boost by realising roadwork projects that would have otherwise been sitting on local government waiting lists. I think all of our communities would agree that improving our local road networks is stimulus funding well spent!

“We ran it in 2018 and 2019, but we had made the call to not hold it this year because of restrictions and everything, but then we’ve decided to have a popup event with three very special gardens,” spokesperson Sophie Durham explained. “The three gardens chosen out of the dozen or so that we’re initially planned for the event, are all quite extensive ensuring value for money for those supporting this event sponsored by Peter Fisher Real Estate. “it’s going to be a beautiful day and all the gardens are very large, we didn’t go with any in-town gardens. We wanted to maximise everyone’s enjoyment,” Sophie explained. “We’re open this Saturday (November 13) from 9–3pm with the cost only $20 for all three gardens, or $10 for each garden, with kids free.” Sophie added that the decision to hold the event has provided a lift to everyone’s spirits after the last two

interrupted years. “We originally made the call in August to cancel, we just thought it wasn’t going to be feasible and, then we thought three weeks ago, ‘gosh, we can make this happen!’.” The sudden turnaround as restrictions started to ease in NSW had also lifted everyone’s spirits, she added. “We are so excited to be able to to run an event, not just for the garden-owners who put so much effort in getting their places ready, but also for the community that get such enjoyment out of the event. “This is also our biggest fundraiser for Orange Public School for the year, and the whole thing is run by a wonderful team of volunteers with Peter Fisher our sponsors,” she added. The three gardens on show are Bloomfield House at 15 Catto Close (with parking on Leewood Drive); Anfield Gardens, at 21 Moriarty Crescent, and the Shapter Residence at 74 Thomas Kite Lane, Windera. Bloomfield House is described as: “a hidden treasure within the Leewood industrial Estate with garden surrounding the beautifully-restored bluestone cottage built by the Moulder family c 1901”. It also features: “historic
and decorative features through a series of paths weaving between trees with colourful understory plantings.” Anfield Gardens is a more than two-hectare property of: “over 350 trees, mostly made-up of ornamentals such as maples, ash, birch, poplars, willows, pears, conifers, planes and pines,” with “multiple rose gardens with a preference given to David Austin Roses, along with a vegetable garden, fruit orchard, olive grove, citrus, and a kitchen herb garden.” Shapter Residence is spread over two hectares and: “consists predominantly of exotics, with some native species. A spectacular feature of the garden is the area close to the house which showcases the owner’s talent in transforming a blank canvas into a stunning display. The tree-lined driveway is exquisite in spring and autumn.” Locals and visitors can also support the event and the school while getting a bite, buying a plant, or topping-up on merchandise designed for the event, Sophie said. “One of the gardens will have a barbecue, another has got a plant stall, and ‘Spilt Milk’ is going to be at the third. “Oh, and we’re also going to be selling tote-bags, teatowels, and aprons with the event logo designed by artist Freya Blackwood on them,” Sophie concluded.

Orange City Life had the opportunity to sit down and chat with David Waddell about his role as Chief Executive Officer of Orange City Council. How did you end up working in local government? I was a consulting engineer working and living in Sydney on various projects for a company that actually had an office in Orange. We had three little kids, Annie (David’s wife) and I decided to get out of the city for a couple of years. I got a contract to come out to the company’s Orange office and build it up. That was about 15 years ago, and we’ve never left. After about three years of working for the company here, I didn’t want to go back to Sydney and a job came up for Director of Development at Orange City Council. I
decided to go for the job rather than returning to the city and, luckily, I got the role. Ultimately, going on to get the CEO role two-and-half years ago. What does your typical working day look like? A typical day, for instance, today I had a breakfast meeting with one of the Directors, we have four here at Council, catching up on projects. Came in and did about 40 emails, got my day ready and met with various staff. We had a meeting with a developer who’s in town hearing about their interest with Orange – we get a lot of that – and talking about what they would want to do if they come here. Part of my job is to help sell Orange. I went over to the Tiptop building because they’re demolishing it. After that, went to the depot to see some staff members. Came back to the office, had lunch and we’ve been getting the business paper ready for the last council term – which I’ll be reading this afternoon. At
the same time, I’m thinking about the next council that’s coming in February. What do you love most about your job? I always say it’s the variety and the ability to see what you’re achieving. As an example, if you look at our FutureCity program, revamping around the CBD, it’s really satisfying to look out the window and go ‘woah this is what we dreamed about two years ago’. The variety is just fantastic and as an engineer I really enjoy that aspect. What’s your favourite place to go to in Orange? A really good afternoon and night out in Orange is having a couple of quiet beers out at the Gladstone or the Canobolas, having a meal at either Parkview or Union Bank with a little whiskey at Washington’s – that’s a great time. But also, a great day for me in Orange is to go for a bike ride around the mountain, maybe stopping by at the lake, depends on what I’m feeling like at the time.

Who would have thought that two years ago, the concept of working from home on a large scale would have been something we could have pivoted to so quickly? Who would have thought that the idea of returning to your office or work environment after such a long period of time would be such a difficult thing to process? As we have reached this stage in our recovery from the pandemic, many of us have had an opportunity to reflect on the values we place on the spheres of our lives. We have had the chance to reflect on what really defines us. Many people have noticed a shift in the values that we place on our work. There is a greater longing for the simple things in life. A deeper yearning for our value to be placed in things outside of our work.
In a letter that is found in the bible, Paul writes this to a small church in northern Greece as they grapple with who they are. This is what he says in 1 Thessalonians 4:10b-11: “Yet we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more, and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you.” As they figured out who they were and what they did, they were called to live a simple and quiet life. If you think about it, it is not a bad way to live your life. To be honest, quiet and humble in all you do. It is a far cry from where we sadly see situations play out around us, where differing opinions become a reason for relational fallout. Where there is perhaps a culture of privilege and expectancy, rather than a sense of working hard. Which brings me back to my question: who are you? What defines who you are?
What we did used to define who we were. Now, however, it has shifted to who you are defines what you do.
For me, what defines me is my faith. That is at the very core of who I am and this shapes everything I do, the way I think about the world, the way I process all that happens to me and what goes on around me and how about work.
If that is the case, then who are you? That is the sort of question that can keep you awake at night. It is the sort of question that all of us need to ask ourselves. It is the sort of question that can take us on a journey as we seek to

Based at their property near Trunkey for more than two decades, Zanzie and Fred D’Souza had a vision to produce top-quality, traditionally-prepared pork and bacon for the Central Tablelands. “When we started just over 21 years ago, we had pigs ourselves and wanted to make good-quality products for the local market. “We do all the preparation and work at the shopfront in Endsleigh Ave, we ensure quality-control from ‘birth to bacon’, as we say,” Zanzie explained. Pigs are all grown locally without any HGP (hormonal growth promotants) at their own

Like many small, independent retailers, the lockdowns over the past two years affected

Internet under pressure from the “new normal” Don’t despair if you’re experiencing slow and intermittent internet access at home over recent times — you’re not alone.
“People used to use their phone data when they were at home, now they realise they can use their home data, that as well,” he added.
Local National Broadband Network (NBN) repair and installation contractor, Tim Moult said on a recent home visit to fix a damaged cable, that we are all now labouring under a system that was not really built to have everyone at home accessing it for most of the day.
He described the analogy is that of a highway designed for peak-hour traffic that suddenly has every car in a city trying to drive on it at the one time.
The NBN was simply not designed with the lockdowns, quarantines, tick-tock videos, online conference calling, and the working-from-home revolution in mind — innovations which have all taken over our lives since COVID-19 hit in February last year. “It’s people self-isolating, working from home… people Skype-calling and conference-calling… people that have moved from Sydney to the country, it’s all adding-up,” he said.
“We shouldn’t have ever expected to have 100 per cent people online at any one time “In data technology, the bandwidth is not wide enough for everyone to be on 100 per cent of the time. It’s like having a four-lane highway when you need a six-lane highway,” he added. His role as a trouble-shooting contractor for the NBN has seen his work skyrocket since the first lockdowns in March last year. “I’m flat-out, say a 40 per cent increase since lockdown,
that’s about the order of difference,” he said. Studies on internet speeds have shown that many rural areas have experienced issues to do with slow speed and intermittent access since lockdown, especially during peak times such as on late afternoons. Covering an area that encompasses the Central Tablelands from Lithgow and Oberon to Canowindra, he understands the frustration that many people feel at delays to having problems looked-at in-person. Users however shouldn’t be taking these delays out on the front-line staff being assigned to the home and work visits, he added. “People say to me, ‘look, I’ve been waiting two months for this call, where have you been?’ and I have to say, ‘I know that, but I only received this job at about six o-clock yesterday,’ that is how we get our jobs, mostly just for the next day,” Tim concluded.

Climate change protest at Minister Gee’s office With the world-wide climate change conference continuing at Glasgow in Scotland, the Calare Climate Action group has recently held a series of protests outside the office of Federal Member Andrew Gee, demanding faster action from the Government on climate change. The council game is back! Have your say! The “Council Game” gives players who are potential Council candidates in the upcoming election the opportunity to let our readers know more about them, how they think, why they are standing, their aims if elected, and so on. Our “Open Forum” gives everyone else the

There are few people in Orange who don’t have some gripes about the state of our roads. Social media is often filled with comments and memes regarding the potholes all over town. It begs the question: How were the Romans able to build roads that survive until this day, yet we can’t build anything of the sort? Of course, we are not road-builders and we have no intention of trying to undermine the great work done by our committed Council staff. All we want is to explore whether ratepayers are getting value-for-money when it comes to Orange’s roads. From our limited perspective, and from talking to some people with some knowledge in this space, we believe there are questions that need to be asked about the following: • Are road foundations (Sub-Base and Base Courses) being adequately designed for the traffic loads they will carry? • Is enough consideration being given to potential future traffic loads? • Is the appropriate surface wearing course being used? • Is enough attention being paid to provide enough good drainage to prevent water getting into base courses and, particularly, the wearing surface to ensure proper drainage? We would propose engaging independent expert external advisers to review Orange’s road construction and maintenance processes so that ratepayers can either be reassured that current practices are up to standard or, if found not to be the case, that changes can be
implemented moving forward to get best bang for our roadworks buck. If there are things we can learn from the way other councils manage their roads, then let’s take advantage of it! As the old saying goes, “Rome wasn’t built in a day”, and we know from history that the Romans built things to last. Of course, everything is a balancing act between cost and quality, but we believe roads in Orange are worthy of asking the above questions to ensure we are getting that balance right. “Walk of Art” for Botanic Gardens
During my campaign I have mentioned three projects that I would like to pursue if I’m elected Mayor on December 4. I’ve already talked about the Boomerang Park Super Playground idea for the site on the Northern Distributor where the Sports Stadium was meant to go, and I’ve mentioned the Glenroi Practice Park to provide kids with facilities to develop ball and sporting skills including tennis, table tennis, soccer, etc. I want to mention my third project, it’s another one that has been put up previously but like the others, didn’t get any real consideration. This one is a “Walk of Art” at the Botanical Gardens. Our Botanical Gardens are quite beautiful and provide a wonderful experience for a small number of people who have interests in plants and bird life, for example. Sadly, it’s way under-utilised, but has the potential to provide

more people with an enjoyable experience, simply by adding further reasons to visit there. There’s a delightful walking track around the facility and it lends itself perfectly to adding a variety of things to make the walk more interesting. The “Walk of Art” idea was floated a few years back, and since then a story walk has been added that tells the story of bees in a small circular walk off the main track. The Walk of Art idea builds on that, and the concept suggests a series of art works along the walkway, maybe mixed with some large-scale sculptures. There could be a variety of artworks or maybe a particular theme, they could change every couple of years also, if appropriate. I’m sure you get the idea and can imagine what a difference it would make to the Botanic Gardens experience for visitors and locals alike. Orange needs more attractions, particularly ones that give people a reason to come here other than food and wine. The local government elections will be held on Saturday, December 4. Nominations have closed and while there are several familiar names on the list, there are also quite a few first-time nominees as well. We can therefore potentially make some major changes to our Council and hopefully end up with a vibrant, dynamic and innovative team. I am part of the Orange Residents and Ratepayers Association group. This association exists solely to listen
to and advocate for anyone who lives in Orange or owns property here, and everyone is most welcome to come to our monthly meetings. I’m so pleased to be part of this election team. Every one of my fellow team members is a genuine candidate – all smart, savvy and hardworking, and I would really love it if we were ALL elected to Councillor positions. We don’t agree on every issue, but we do work really well together. I’d also like to acknowledge all of those people who have nominated for this election. These are people who have chosen not to just comment from the sidelines (or their lounge rooms), but to step up and try to make a difference. We’ve all survived a particularly-challenging nomination process using a new online system that even the help desk staff didn’t know how to use, and which was especially frustrating when attempting to officially form a group. We don’t have a mayoral candidate for this election, but we have an obvious interest in the nominees for this position and have therefore decided to arrange a forum for the public to meet the mayoral candidates and listen to them speak about their respective visions for Orange, and answer some questions about themselves, their goals and plans. Real change for a stronger Orange
Tuesday, November 2, was the penultimate Council meeting for this current Mayor and Councillors before the long-awaited election on Saturday, December 4. The meeting was held in the newly-restored chambers in the OCTEC building as part of the commemoration of 75 years of Orange Council. Attendance for constituents was by live-stream. My only thoughts following viewing this meeting was to echo a famous political slogan; Its time! Now is the time borrowing from and misquoting other political slogans to: • Put people first. • Plan for a strong, new economy and environment. • Make Real Change: A stronger Orange, a better future. • Move forward. • Stand-up for real action to protect and respect the environment. • Ensure opportunity for all residents. Ease the squeeze on affordable homes. • Protect, secure build a prosperous future for all residents. • Head in the right direction. Keep Orange in safe hands. That’s What I Stand For. These past campaign slogans, are even more relevant as we navigate new terrain and challenges. Despite being an election characterised by delays — including the ballot draw by the Returning Officer to determine poll positions on the voting form — the race is on and; Its finally time! Put thought into your Council vote
It’s great that Orange is an expanding city, bringing many boons as well as challenges for Council to manage. One will be zoning and residential development. I was in North Orange recently and noted the absence of a corner store or café. Orange can make such businesses work. Think of great places like Nile Street Café or Bills Beans, and useful stores such as the Gardner Road corner store or the Greengate shops near Duntryleague. As Orange expands, Council should consider and support similar stores which make life easier for people who live nearby. There are 64 candidates running for Orange Council. It’s reassuring to see a variety of different people who are prepared to put themselves out there and commit their time to serve their city. Choosing between the candidates is a challenge, and one candidates should help with, by providing information about themselves. As part of nomination, candidates must submit a candidate information sheet which is displayed on the electoral commission website. We can include information about ourselves and our platform there; strangely a quick look suggests many candidates have chosen not to do that. Additionally, candidates can provide information through social media and other online sites, newspaper advertisements and opinion pieces such as this column. There has been a real variety amongst the candidates and groups as to whether they provide information about why people should vote for them or not. Obviously, I have a vested interest, but would suggest that, before you vote for someone, see if you can find out any information about them and their priorities. It’s a small commitment of time and resources but, if candidates can’t spare that now, then they might find putting in that time to be an effective counsellor difficult. Time for new broom through our Council
On December 4, there will be 12 vacancies for the new Council. This is despite some reporting that has seemed to imply that the only vacancies will be those where current Councillors have left or are leaving for one reason or another. The fact is, Orange has a wonderful opportunity to put a broom through our Council, if that’s what voters want. Personally, I’d like to see a completely new group elected, because I feel the current group has performed only the very basics, and even with all the experience of several long-serving Councillors, they have made some pretty bad decisions. Also, having watched almost every Council meeting for 12 months or more has only added to my view, that the way that most meetings have been conducted and many

of the issues have been debated, has been very disheartening. I didn’t see a lot of flair or enterprise from councillors, just a lot of rubber-stamping and patting each other on the back. Hardly inspiring! If I was a councillor, I wouldn’t like to be credited with the way the Robertson Park toilet was handled, or the building of the Naylor Pavillion at the showground without a toilet, or for buying a block of land for a sports stadium on the Northern Distributor that was never going to be suitable, or agreeing to spend $500,000 on a feasibility study for the Mountain Bike proposal, or for disregarding some 170 serious and detailed petitions about the sports stadium issue, because Council considered “the silent majority supported the Bloomfield site”. So much for a Council bent on using proper “research” in other instances. It’s early days but the changes to Lords Place may also prove to be a disaster, and if a street full of plain oldfashioned lights that would have been great back in the 1970s or 1980s gets our Council excited, it’s definitely time for new blood! Regarding the up-and-coming Council elections. Last elections, I, as a resident of Cabonne Shire, was deeply disappointed in the lack of interest shown by the local media towards the candidates of councils other than Orange City. With the added restrictions being placed on candidates on polling day due to COVID-19, how are we the voters to gain an understanding of where/what a candidate stands for? I ask in fairness that your newspaper and others print even a brief summary of each candidate for Blaney, Cabonne, and Orange. At least tell us their names, where they live (Orange, Molong, Spring Hill, Mullion Creek), and what they stand for/their aims on Council. At the Orange pre-poll centre last time, there were no “how to vote” cards, or any information for the Blaney and Cabonne candidates. It was blind luck that the electoral staff at least had a copy of the candidate’s nomination forms for voters to look at. Please understand your readers come from more than just Orange City! Wear a funny or silly hat to the Orange Farmers’ Market this coming weekend to show your support for a Rotary Club of Orange Daybreak initiative on mental health. Daybreak Rotary wish to “Lift the Lid” on issues around mental health by donating the gate takings of this weekend markets to this vital area. Lift the Lid is defined as “to reveal the truth about (something) to such that the problem is made clear for all to see”. The campaign, started in 2016 in partnership with Rotary Clubs of Victoria was such a success that now, it has been extended to all Rotary Clubs across Australia. Each year approximately 1-in-5 Australians will experience a mental illness and in order to help future generations of young Australians, we need to look ahead through research and find out how we can prevent this type of illness occurring. The President of Daybreak Rotary, Bruce Smith said today that “the lockdown had been necessary during the pandemic, but only now do we see some consequences of this action”. He added that “the limited social interaction of our youth during lockdown has created new challenges for mental health workers”. So, help us celebrate Hat Day, by wearing your most eye-catching, silly, out there or even provocative hat to the Orange Farmers’ Market on Saturday 13 November.

PROBUS NOTES Firstly, a big apology to any member who turned up for the September meeting that didn’t happen. With the Club open I presumed the function room would be open too; put it down to Covid madness. In spite of lockdown, your Probus executive has been active planning for the short and long term, so we can soon enjoy the fun and fellowship of Probus. We plan to be “first cab off the rank” when OSMC function room opens on first of December. This will be our Christmas luncheon with doors open at 12 noon and be seated by 12.30 pm for the meal. Hopefully, the bar will be open to supply a little “spirit” and the two- course meal will be appetizing. Wives and girl-friends are most welcome, but not both at the same time. Phil will contact you as NUMBERS ARE REQUIRED. From then activities will begin again, depending how much freedom we have from Covid to travel, but the long- standing plans will be reactivated as soon as possible, and there will always be an interesting guest speaker. A tour to Bathurst is planned for March with visit to Railway Museum and the Auto Museum, and a “quick” trip round Mt Panorama and other interesting sites. Your suggestions are always welcome. If time is dragging, why not check out U3A (University of the Third Age). There are programs a.m. and p.m. each day designed to educate and stimulate the senior brain. Last Monday members of the Heritage Rose Group of the Friends of the Orange Botanic Gardens held their Annual General meeting in the Botanic Room at the Botanic Gardens. This meeting followed the monthly working bee which focused on dead heading roses and tidying up debris under rose bushes. The Co-ordinator of the group Sharyn Pussell welcomed members and in her report thanked members for their ongoing support throughout the year. The election of office bearers for 2022 was conducted with Sharyn Pussell continuing as Co-ordinator, Helen Green was voted in as secretary and Christine Kosarek as Treasurer. These guys from the Emmco Rugby League team may have been covered in mud and battle weary but they won the day. They snatched the Western Challenge Cup from Lithgow Workmen’s Club, winning decisively 28-11 in a thrilling match at Wade Park in July 1960. Despite the mud underfoot, the day was fine and a large crowd turned out to watch the game.

He reduced the letter to card size, laminated that, and there were plenty of spares printed on the sheet. He knew exactly what a senior citizen required. Many thanks. THUMBS UP to a fellow Post Office customer who, on Friday, November 5, paused from addressing her own package to help an elderly gentleman address his package. It was a lovely gesture.
THUMBS UP to Ally on the front door at the hospital. She performs a difficult job and deals with very difficult situations and always with a smile on her face. She goes out of her way to help people and does a wonderful job representing the hospital. BIG THUMBS UP to the wonderful staff at Calare Aged Care for putting on a magnificent Melbourne cup. On arrival the ladies received flowers for their hair, and the men a sparkly tie. We had a fashion on the field parade, also there were nibbles and champagne. I would like to thank the great kitchen staff for providing a lovely Melbourne cup lunch and sweets.
