and Economic Development Committee chair, Cr Tony Mileto, said the shopping card campaign had proved successful in the past.
It worked a treat once, Orange City Council claimed, so why not give the Orange Shopping Card promotion another spin round the rodeo? Council recently approved giving away 1000 ‘Think Orange Region’ $50 EFTPOS shopping cards to help boost businesses affected by the pandemic. The $50,000 funding boost builds on the successful ‘Retail Recovery’ program launched in 2020 where thousands of ‘Shop Orange’ cards were distributed locally, according to Council. This program was designed as an emergency response to the unprecedented retail lockdown with a total of 200 winners with more than 100 locally-owned businesses signing up for the promotion designed to pump-prime the local retail sector hit-hard by the continuing coronavirus crisis. The campaign has been rebranded as the ‘Think Orange Region Shopping Card’, working like any other gift card or voucher-based system, that can

is doing what it can to help support businesses now,” Cr Reg Kidd said.
Orange Mayor Reg Kidd said this latest initiative comes on the heels of a string of measures aimed at supporting local retailers stay in business.
“Some of these strategies, like the FutureCity CBD upgrade are about the long term, but that doesn’t mean we can’t also work on some short-term solutions that will be felt in the coming months,” Cr Kidd said.
“Many local businesses are doing it tough at present and while some aspects of that are unavoidable, I’m pleased Council

“We found last time that when someone uses one of these cards at a local store, they added some dollars of their own to buy something worth more than fifty dollars,” Cr Mileto said. “$50,000 is only a fraction of the revenue that’s spent at local stores in a year, but it all helps. It might be the factor that will prompt someone to make their first visit to a local store after the lockdown.” Businesses that have an EFTPOS facility can register their business on the Think Orange website and be able to accept Think Orange Shopping Cards. Council staff will then be in touch to finalise EFTPOS arrangements.

HistoryTALKING with HELEN McANULTY
“DOUBLE, DOUBLE, TOIL AND TROUBLE, FIRE BURN AND CAULDRON BUBBLE.” The three witches may have been stirring up a stew of wicked spells for Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” but their brewing pot bore more than a little resemblance to the boiling copper over which housewives slaved before the advent of the washing machine. The Orange Oral History group had a merry time remembering washing days of their own and those of their childhood. “It actually started for us on Sunday night,” Barbara told us, “when the children had to bring buckets of water from the well to fill the copper ready for Monday morning. “The laundry was a lean-to on the back of the house and on Monday we had to get our own lunch because Mum was so busy.” The group wondered why washing day was always on a Monday and Elma came up with the answer. “You washed on Monday so you would have clean clothes all the week.” Everyone agreed that we didn’t have many clothes in those days and changed from school clothes to old clothes as soon as we came home and wore them for the rest of the week. On washing day the fire under the copper had to be lit with kindling often collected by the children, the clothes boiled and lifted out using a wooden copper stick. They had to be rinsed until all the soap was gone, put through the wringer (if you were lucky enough to have one), put in a blueing rinse and hung on the long line which was held up by forked sticks known as clothes props.
It seems that the men were the inventive ones in those days. And no wonder, as the women were too busy just doing the washing! “My father worked in the garage and his overalls got so dirty that Mum had to get down on her knees to scrub them clean,” said Dick.
WASHING DAY Often there were detachable starched collars and cuffs, tablecloths and doilies. It was a backbreaking job and if it rained it all had to be taken off and dried all over the house. “My mother made soap using mutton fat, caustic soda and lanolin,” said Dot. “She boiled it up, cooled it and cut it into cubes. “We had a wooden box with holes in the bottom on the side of the tub,” Lyn told us. “We used to lift the clothes out of the copper into the box to drain.” Rosemary had the exhausting task of washing sheets in the bathtub while pregnant. “The lady next door even asked me how I got my sheets so white! “I grew up in the bush”, Reg told us. “On washing day we dragged up the water from the well with a horse. “The copper was in the open and Mum scrubbed the clothes on a wooden board. We noticed it was getting splintery so we gave her a new steel one for Mother’s Day.
www.mccarrons.com.au 30 SEPTEMBER 16 — 22, 2021
“After I married my wife Crystal, we were droving. When the babies came she used to do the washing using the water we carried in big drums. She would hang them out on cords from the back of the crate and we had lovely white sheets and napkins billowing out behind us.” Tim also worked in the back country and found a different use for a copper. “Our family always washed on Monday,” he said. “If we killed a pig we used the boiling water in the copper to scald the pig. “When I was working in the bush,” he continued, “the only time we could have a beer was at Christmas time. We mixed up a brew in the copper but the cook decided ginger beer was too tame and asked the station cook to add something to spice it up. We didn’t know he’d done this and put the brew in the fridge overnight. “Next morning to our horror we discovered it had blown the fridge door off! “To save washing,” he went on, “we used to walk into the shower fully clothed – no problems!”
“He welded together two 12-gallon drums, put a lid on them and hooked them up to the lathe. He put a crank on the lathe to make it go backwards and forwards and so saved Mum having to get down on her knees. It was a great success! “The reason I was born in Australia,” said Leslye, “is that my ancestor was transported here for ‘snow dropping’. “People in England would spread their sheets and other clothes on the top of bushes so that the frost would keep them white. My ancestor was crafty enough to steal them and was convicted for snow dropping.” Glenna added to Leslye’s story. “One of my ancestors lived in the Rocks and used to walk to Centennial Park to spread sheets on the bushes there.” It is to be hoped that Leslye’s ancestor was not around to continue his evil. Our conversation had, as always, brought out all sorts of different stories but we all remembered the joy and relief with which we greeted our first washing machine. The first models would be considered primitive today but they saved women a good deal of hard labour. It was possibly the first in a series of steps that enabled the women of today to look outside the home for work. Up until then they were much too busy to consider doing anything else.
