“SCHOOL CHILDREN IN ISOLATION!” BETWEEN 80 AND 90 PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN ARE PLACED IN ISOLATION FOR 21 DAYS”. “As the height of the epidemic in parts of Australia is reached, state borders, schools, pools and theatres are closed and travel restrictions and quarantine measures are to be introduced”. “SYDNEY MORNING HERALD”

No, this was not 2021, but during the poliomyelitis epidemics which disrupted our communities in 1938. Throughout history, humans have suffered catastrophic pandemics which have killed millions of people.

“A boy in my class died and the rest of us were horrified”, John B told us. "My cousin lost the use of his legs for quite a while.”

VACCINES catching smallpox. He took the unusual and rather dangerous step of testing his ideas on the young son of a neighbour and, finding it worked, he inoculated his first patient successfully, thus earning the title of “the father of immunisation.” Smallpox was eradicated by 1979 and Jenner was credited with creating the medical science of vaccination. Influenza, which was first recorded in 1850, was responsible for the Spanish Flu pandemic in 1919 that killed between 50 and 100 million people.

With the world now in the grip of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is There is now a seasonal vaccine to enlightening to look at the infectious help control it. diseases which have caused havoc Diphtheria was another infectious in the past - and there were quite disease which caused much a few! suffering, especially amongst Smallpox was one of them. children, until a vaccine was introduced into Australia in 1905 In the 18th Century alone, this with community vaccination horrible, disfiguring disease killed more than 300 million people alone. beginning in 1932. Englishman Edward Jenner is regarded as the first to discover that milkmaids who suffered from cowpox, were somehow immune to the much more lethal smallpox. He concluded that the pus in the blisters that infected the milkmaids seemed to protect them from

Relieved parents rushed to have their families protected against the disease, no doubt breathing a huge sigh of relief at being able to do so. One of the most dreaded diseases which stays in the memories of the older generation was poliomyelitis, previously known as infantile

paralysis because of the horrifying crippling with which sufferers were often afflicted. Miraculously in 1955, a vaccine was developed by Dr Jonas Salk and became known obviously, as “the Salk vaccine”, and which saved millions from the devastating after-effects of the illness. There is a long list of infections which have been effectively controlled by vaccination, including tetanus, whooping cough, measles, mumps, rubella, influenza, hepatitis and pneumococcal infections, tetanus and shingles. Although the Orange Oral History group is in lockdown, I was able to contact them for their reactions to having vaccinations for these diseases. And they were unanimous. They were all so thankful to be protected against the many horrible infections. “I never questioned the need for vaccination” said Leslye. “Especially when I saw a picture of President Roosevelt who’d had polio.” Most of the group had friends or relatives who had caught Polio and remembered the lives they lived when they were disabled from the disease.

Glenna was enthusiastic. “We felt so lucky to have vaccines. We saw so many who had had polio. My cousin had a withered arm as a result of the illness.” Richard agreed: “I saw it first-hand as my older brother had a withered arm too due to catching Polio so I was never worried about being vaccinated against it.” Karrilyn had seen a boy with tetanus which had horrifying symptoms like lockjaw, painful fits, and fever but now a vaccine is given to us routinely. We turned our attention then to measles which was a frightening disease with quite a few side-effects. “I remember being very ill with measles,” said Barbara. “And I was so relieved that my children were able to be vaccinated.” Doreen used to worry about TB and told us : “people feared it so much.” John, who worked with livestock, pointed-out that vaccination had long been used successfully in that field, and they were very used to it. He also thought that, as we were not as well-off as we are today, we were more willing to accept things which would make life better. We concluded that we are so lucky nowadays to have all these improvements in controlling infectious diseases and we should eagerly take advantage of them. Copyright Helen McAnulty 2021

DECLUTTERING YOUR LIFE, WITH

CAMERON PLACE SELF-STORAGE Clutter, as we all know, is one of the constants of our lives. If this applies to you, then Cameron Place Self-Storage could be the answer. Affluence, the abundance of cheap consumer items, nostalgia, and our habit of not wanting to let valuable items go, means that many of us have more stuff in our homes and other premises, than we can conveniently-store. Sick of living or working in an overcrowded and disorderly mess? Then self-storage could be the remedy you are looking for. If you’re in that situation in your personal or business affairs, then give Dave and Chris Gray a call. “We’ve been here eight years next month and we’re locally-owned and operated. You deal directly with us and not a real estate agent. Simply put, if you call, we answer the phone,” Dave said. With 60 secure and security-guard patrolled units

ranging in size from six metres long by 2.7 metres wide to three-by-three metre square units, they have the size for every home or business looking to free-up room on their premises.

access from 6am to eight at night to ensure the highestpossible security for your unit,” Chris said.

“We’re pretty full most of the time here, COVID-19 hasn’t really affected us at all, with about half our units for personal and half for business premises,” Chris explained.

“You can’t store flammable liquids for obvious safety reasons, and car tyres. People used to hire a unit, fill-it full of old car tyres — which are expensive to dispose of at the tip — and then just leave them there,” Chris said.

Dealing directly with the owner, the units offer a hasslefree way to open-up the space in your home or business and at reasonable rates. “You’re simply given a pin number for our keypad entry that operates the gate and then you put your own lock on your unit,” Chris said. “You come-in one gate and go-out the other gate, it’s that simple,” she said. “We have security guards patrolling all the time with

Almost anything can be stored in the versatile units, with two notable exceptions, she added.

“We’re at 23 Cameron Place (in the east Orange industrial estate), we don’t keep waiting lists, because when you people call-back, they’ve invariably found somewhere else in the meantime,” Dave said. So, for hassle-free storage and to get your living and working space back to its best-possible use, give Dave and Chris a call on 0418 869 897.
