Amazing Opportunity- Business or Lifetstyle Are you thinking about beginning a new chapter of your life? B and B? Equestrian? Restaurant? Cellar door? Or just want a change? This property is amazing. The main building is the 1883 Shadforth schoolhouse whose cathedral ceilings, exposed beams and wooden floorboards will take your breath away. The solid bluestone sourced from the local area has stood the test of time, while the 4.88 acres provides ample scope for a lifestyle or business as the property has Mitchell Highway frontage along with DA approval for numerous new buildings including sheds and accommodation while the schoolhouse interior is also approved for business or a lovely family home. HANDYMAN JOHN
has heart of gold
John Davies is the handyman with the heart of gold.
John first moved to Orange to help a sick family member out… and has been lending a hand ever since. “I first came to Orange to help my brother-in-law. He was out at Molong and was suffering from kidney failure, so I came-up to help, He had to go into Orange for dialysis and couldn’t really drive so I’d drive him to town and get a bit of work at the vineyards, wineries, that sort of thing,” he said. Running alternately a home maintenance and lawn mowing service, he has, since COVID-19, combined the two to ensure he keeps busy all year. “I’ve done a lot of handyman, lawn maintenance, domestic cleaning, that sort of thing,” he explained.
“I did house-cleaning for years and I lost some of my work due to the lockdowns, so I’ve tried to branch-out… I worked as a lawnmower man for 20 years, so I’ve combined the two, mowing mostly in the warmer months, and cleaning in the colder,” John added. For a number of his older clients, he says that his rates are a small price to pay to keep their places ship-shape and Bristol-fashion. Rather than do the work yourself, and risk injury, it’s better to pay a little-bit and look after yourself, he believes. “I can do a fair bit of stuff around the place, I have a ride-on mower, whipper-snipper, blower vac… I can do any little job that they want, and I offer seniors rates and pensioners rates,” John said.
“A lot of these people can’t afford the price of other contractors, but I’ll almost always cut them a price and look after them,” he said. John said that flexibility is the key to being able to help around your home, no matter how big or small the job. “I can work weekends, whenever I can, I’d rather be doing something than nothing, so give me a call. “I do like keeping busy, when I was young, I was a lazy fella, now I like keeping active, that’s why I love my work” John concluded.

HistoryTALKING with HELEN McANULTY
“ We’ll make the tyrant feel the sting of those that they would throttle And never shall the fault be ours if blood should stain the wattle” Henry Lawson During the 1880s, the Labor movement was growing in Australia. In the latter part of the century, unionism gradually increased in strength. By 1890, Australia’s economic depression was increasing, and the combination of drought, unemployment ,and falling wool prices led to one of the great strikes in the young country’s history. THIS WAS THE SHEARER’S STRIKE. Non -unionists were recruited from Victoria, Tasmania, and New Zealand to work in the sheds which were boycotted by the strikers. ————————————————
“I asked a cove for shearin’ once, along the Marthaguy. “ We shear non-Union here… ‘I call it scab’, says I.” Banjo Paterson ———————————————— Both our poets, Lawson and Paterson, were supporters of the workers as can be seen in their writings. But Paterson, perhaps, had a closer association with one disturbing

THE UNION FOREVER incident which occurred during the shearer’s strike of 1894. At 8 o’clock on the night of the 4th September, 1894,a telegram was received by the Colonial Secretary from Winton, Queensland stating that the Dagworth wool shed on the Upper Diamantina had been burned down by about 15 armed men, and that forty shots had been fired “There is hardly any doubt,” quoted one unnamed source, “that this is the same gang that has been burning all our sheds. “Information has also been received from Winton that a man named Hoffmeish, a prominent unionist, was found dead about two miles from Kyuna. The local impression is that he was one of the attacking mobs at Dagworth station and was wounded there. It was asserted that he had committed suicide near a waterhole.” ————————————————
“And his voice may be heard as it sings in the billabong, ‘Who’ll come a-waltzing Matilda with me? Banjo Paterson ————————————————
Paterson visited Dagworth Station to stay with the owners , the MacPherson brothers, just four months after this episode. The woodshed had been destroyed and , it is claimed, so inspired was he by the story of the suicide of Hoffmeish and the outback slang depicting a wanderer carrying a swag , that he penned the words of “Waltzing Matilda”. Christina, a sister of the MacPhersons , had heard, while attending the Warnambool races in Victoria, a catchy melody, thought to be derived from an Irish air published in 1720. She joined her brothers at Dagworth about the same time as Paterson, and one night after dinner she played the melody on a zither. Paterson was fascinated by the tune, and no doubt by the dramatic fight between the shearers and squatters and the story of the swagman who “waltzed his matilda”and later committed suicide in a billabong. There were some who vehemently declared that this was a battle song for the striking shearers but Paterson himself was inclined to take a more light-hearted approach.
The song proved to be very popular and was sung around many a piano at after dinner gatherings. Some years ago, I spoke to a delightful lady who had another story to add. Her grandfather, William Hegarty, was travelling through the Gulf country buying horses for the Indian Army and the Raj. It was about the time of Banjo’s visit that he made one of his regular stops at Dagworth and remembered after dinner singing the latest popular song around the piano. ———————————————— “AND HIS GHOST CAN BE HEARD AS YOU PASS BY THAT BILLABONG YOU’LL COME A-WALTZING MATILDA WITH ME” ———————————————— This article is not my usual way of reporting on Oral History but the OH group has been in recess in the Lockdown. Nevertheless one can claim that the voices of our poets can be heard over the centuries reminding my friend of her grandfather’s story and the birth of our favourite song.
