HistoryTALKING with HELEN McANULTY

“It roars for days in the hopeless scrubs and across where the ground seems bare, With a cackle and hiss, like hissing snakes, the fire is travelling there, Till at last, exhausted by sleeplessness and the terrible toll and heat, The squatter is crying,”My God, the wool, and the farmer, My God, the wheat!” From “The Bushfire” by Henry Lawson Both Paterson and Lawson wrote emotively about fire and the destruction it caused, especially in the Australian bush. One of the worst fires in the Orange area occurred in January, 1985, in the Canobolas State Forest. It was reported in the Central Western Daily on Tuesday, 29th January, that it was burning out of control on a 3km front and “has destroyed farm cottages, farm buildings, hay sheds, stock and fences when it raced through more than 6000 hectares of bush and grazing land.” The fire had apparently started on the Checkers property near Cargo the previous day, and had swept through rough , timbered country east of the property in “100 F degree heat, fanned by hot winds.” The paper went on to say that “more than 150 firefighters from all available brigades as well as the Forestry Commission fought the blaze last night, with agricultural planes, operating from Orange airport, dumping water on the fire.”

Fire there would be a problem. I was asked what I thought would be best --water or grader and I said that either would do.” But nothing was done. Meanwhile, Ruth Christopherson was alone with her four small children when she had a phone call from Grahame Brown, telling her of the fire. “My husband, Tim, was away at an Australia Day function, so I spent time trying to get hold of him to come home. Grahame arrived, looked at my garden and said ‘You’re going to have fried tomatoes!’ At this stage the fire was coming over the hill towards us.” “It would have been so simple to stop it then,” added Max. But no orders were given. “ At about 3 o’clock the next afternoon the wind blew up”, continued Max, “ and I was asked to get all the aircraft I possibly could into the air. None of the boys were there, but I luckily ran into Gerald Ingham at Orange airport”.

A few years ago I was able to talk to several people who were closely-involved in that dreadful time.

The fire was now coming over the top of the mountain and towards the Forestry Commission.

On that hot, still morning nearly thirty years ago, Max Hazelton was already awake.

At this stage, Bill Speers was ready and standing by for instructions about where to go.

“At about 6am on Sunday, 27th January, Boree Shire asked me to find out where the smoke they could see was coming from,” said Max. “I took off in a cropping aircraft, had a look around, and discovered it was burning in a very small island of grassland, completely isolated, but I knew that if a wind came-up

O S 28 JULY 22—28, 2021

said Leonard, “I went over to my parents’ house and tried to put in a firebreak but it was pretty hopeless as it was so rocky.

Leonard Hughes was on his property, “Bundella” at Four Mile creek, drenching sheep when his mother came down to tell him there was a fire at Checkers. “We finished drenching and I was told to stand by with a tank of water on my truck.” Jeff Morrow was there at the start.

"Then I went to my brother’s place at 'Barton Park' and Lloyd Baker was there doing firebreaks but, by the time the fire reached there, it was so quick that he didn’t have time to drive away--just jumped off the tractor and ran. "He managed to jump into someone’s ute driving by and got away!” “The Forestry was on two sides--the pines on the western side of Canobolas and the eucalypts on the other, said Max. “It had been in the Cabonne area to the west and it came over the creek but, when we were called, it was too late to do anything effective and it took off up the hill, burning very quickly. If we’d had the fire units there at that time, we could have stopped it.

“ We tried to stop the fire getting into the western side, but it went right into the mountain. We helped people on the ground wherever they wanted water dropped, but it went over towards Blayney. "Canobolas has a lot of valleys and grassland which made it very difficult to control.

We looked like being trapped but found an area about 15 yards across, mostly rock, and with the use of the hose we managed to stay upright and just watched the fire take off.”

When it finally reached the open country, it was much easier to control.”

“At that stage most of the men were out mustering,” added Ruth, “which was very dangerous work.

“We thought it looked like a volcano with lava running down the sides!” they said.

Once the fire came over the ridge, it was very tough.” Now the fire had a life of its own, fanned by a hot westerly wind. “It did jump a lot,” said Leonard. “When it came over the Blackrock Range, it probably jumped 200 metres and it was going everywhere--scary! We had to get around it, and drive as fast as we could with a load of water. The fire was still in the farmland but it got to the forest later.” “Late in the afternoon I was told that if I wanted to get out, now was the time,” Ruth told us. “The fire was coming down at us and nobody knew what would happen. By that time, it was in the forest and we were just ahead of it. I took the children into town to their grandparents and spent the night with a neighbour, but we were all still in the line of fire.” “After I got back from Blackrock Range,”

Fran and Kate Sullivan were teenagers and watched it from their father’s property.

“When I drove back from town, it was like a moonscape, said Ruth, all black and smouldering. On Wednesday it came back down south, so no-one really missed it, but thankfully no houses or lives were lost.” Dr Bernie Huxtable was asked to go with a party of firefighters to inspect the area about a week later. “We drove through the blackened, devastated bush and there, up on the hillside, was what looked like a blacksmith’s furnace, roaring away in the roots of a huge hollow tree. A spark could have started the whole thing all over again!” Methods of fire-fighting have changed quite a lot since then but the courage and tenacity of those involved remains the same. RULES FOR REALTORS, TENANTS, AND BUYERS DURING LOCKDOWN With COVID-19 still impacting much of our daily lives, it’s vital to know what you can and can’t do regarding restrictions in our booming real estate market. Q. D o people need to wear a mask while in a real estate agents office? A. Yes, everyone and at all times, unless an exemption applies, for example – medical reasons or a person is working alone in their office without anyone in the room.

Q. A re outgoing inspections for rental properties, still permitted with the tenant present? A. Yes

Q. C an a tenant in a rental property, currently refuse to allow a periodic inspection by the realtor? A. Strictly no, but it might be easier and safer for realtors to defer inspections if the tenant refuses, at least until after the most recent lockdowns. If the tenant claims to be fearful that the inspection will expose them to a risk of contracting COVID-19, then it is difficult to see the licensing body siding with the landlord.

Q. Can agents conduct open or onsite auctions? A. Yes, open inspections as well as auctions can still be conducted, provided that COVID-19 Safety Plans are in place and social distancing requirements are complied with (such as, the four-square metre rule).

Q. I am a buyer/tenant, can I go to an open or onsite auction outside Greater Sydney? A. Yes.

Q. I am an agent and live outside of the Greater Sydney area, can I go into Greater Sydney to do an open or onsite auction?

Sydney area, can I go into Greater Sydney to attend an open or onsite auction? A. No, auctions and opens cannot occur in Greater Sydney. Although private inspections may take place in Greater Sydney via appointment; it is recommended not to do this because you will become an “affected person” under the public health order and will need to comply with the stay at home restrictions in that order for 14 days once you leave Greater Sydney.

Q. C an I move to a new place of residence, including a business moving to new premises, or between different places of residence? A. Yes, you can move to a new place of residence or business.

Q. W hat happens locally to Strata and body corporate meetings? A. If possible, these meetings should be postponed. If not, then provided the owners corporation permits it, make arrangements to hold the meeting online.

Q. C an an employer insist on a team member having a COVID-19 test when they appear to have symptoms consistent with COVID-19? A. An employer has a duty to provide a safe workplace for their employees. However, rather than insisting on the employee getting a COVID-19 test, ask them to go to their doctor and get a medical certificate stating that they are fit for work.

A. No, auctions and opens cannot occur in Greater Sydney.

Q. I f you have a tenant or a purchaser that wants to move into their property, are they allowed to move to a new house?

Q. I am a tenant/buyer and live outside of the Greater

A. Yes.

Q. I s it okay to go to somebody’s home and do a market appraisal? A. Yes.

Q. C an realtors refuse entry to a client to go into a property or into our office if they do not have a mask and are refusing to wear one? A. The obligation to wear a mask is a personal one. You are not the policeman for the rules. However, as an employer you have a duty to provide a safe workplace, so someone not wearing a mask exposes your team to a risk so they should be prohibited from entry.

Q. D o we need to wear masks when completing open for inspections in regional NSW? A. Yes, face masks are mandatory.

Q. Can an agent do letterbox drops? A. Yes, as this is a task that cannot be performed from home.

Q. I s door-knocking allowed for sales prospecting by realtors? A. Whilst you may be doing your job, you need to think about the reaction you may get from people under the current circumstances. Practically, it may not give you good publicity in your community and we suggest you steer clear of it at the present time.

Q. W ill landlords be required to give commercial tenants relief for the two weeks of lockdown? A. No. To date, the NSW Government has not enacted any legislation that requires landlords to provide their commercial tenants with rent relief during the lockdown period.

TRADES AND SERVICE BUSINESS PROFILE

WORKPLACE SAFETY A FOCUS AT INTEGRAL SKILLS Workplace safety is the first priority of the mining and construction industries.

Getting home from a day’s work in one piece is the most important thing we think about when we send our loved one’s off to work each day. Ensuring that everyone in our construction and mining industries have the training to achieve this, is the role of one of Orange’s leading training provider, Integral Skills. “We specialise in training for a range of industries; providing high-risk work licence training and assessments,” Lyndal Molloy, who runs the business with her husband, Matt, said.

training to the specific needs of construction and mining in the central west. “Now that we are our own RTO (registered training organisation); all our packages are designed for local industries, so our training is specifically aimed at workers in the region,”. Courses they run range from basic Yellow and White cards, CPR, working at heights, confined spaces, and entry and supervisor’s courses.
