HistoryTALKING

with HELEN McANULTY

Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water, Jack fell down and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling after. Up Jack got and home he trot as fast as he could caper, He went to bed to mend his head with vinegar and brown paper.

Most of us remember the old nursery rhyme, but have you ever thought of the strange treatment Jack was given to cure his poor sore head? Like many of these popular poems, the origin of the content and references are obscure and disputed. Whilst vinegar and brown paper, indeed, were used as treatments for inflammation and swelling in the past, Jack may well have suffered from something more embarrassing! In the 18th and 19th centuries, the brown paper was made of old rope and canvas which was particularly useful as a poultice for a wound and cider vinegar has been used in medicine as an astringent for hundreds of years. There were many more toxic chemicals like arsenic compounds and mercury used, but their efficacy was countered somewhat by their toxicity. In fact, it is thought by some that it was treatment with mercury for syphilis that killed the great composer Franz Schubert (the affliction that may have also afflicted our friend Jack) rather than typhoid fever, the official diagnosis. Much has changed since the discovery of penicillin by Alexander Fleming in 1928 which in turn, opened the door to a

Home Remedies

variety of wonder drugs that saved the lives of millions.

Until its widespread use, which began in the 1940s, the only treatments available for bacterial infections were arsenic and sulpha drugs, which could be quite toxic. Penicillin was used to treat infections of wounded and ill men fighting in the Second World War and prevented thousands of wartime deaths from meningitis, pneumonia and other diseases, including syphilis and gonorrhoea. In the days before vaccination was available, there were epidemics of measles, mumps, whooping cough and chicken pox, diphtheria, scarlet fever and poliomyelitis. Those were the days when country general practitioners performed complicated operations in small hospitals without the help of specialist anaesthetists and modern equipment, perhaps not always successfully, but with little complaint from their patients. Tonsillectomies were often done at home on the kitchen table, as were other minor surgical procedures. A visit from a doctor was a bit like entertaining royalty and it was only undertaken as a last resort. In fact, the faith patients placed in the doctors’ abilities was enormous and possibly went a long way to hasten

their recovery.

In those days, mothers often had a wealth of ammunition in their kitchen cupboards with which to fight any illness which attacked their family. With this knowledge on board, the Orange Oral History Group felt empowered to remember the home remedies of their youth. Castor oil featured largely in our lives, often followed by orange juice to take the taste away but possibly turned many people off oranges for life. It was supposedly a cure all for almost anything. Quite often, if given the choice of castor oil or going to school, a child could suddenly recover and choose school instead. Rum with milk and honey was a favourite cure for a cough in Elma’s childhood while Lyn’s mother preferred to administer a small amount of red wine in milk. In fact, wine, rum and brandy featured quite often in home remedies and it may have also had a calming effect on those caring for the patient.

many in the group. Today we would worry about the side-effects of this cure but, apparently, our mothers gave it to us with confidence, especially for a sore throat. Not a cure that could possibly be recommended now! Epsom Salts for aching muscles and calamine lotion were valuable additions to the medicine cabinet and Dick remembered sniffing up salt and water for a stuffy nose. The cures for the common cold were many and varied and some of the group remembered mothers cutting up raw onions and placing them on the windowsills to ward off germs. Whether germs or people were kept at bay by the constant aroma is anyone’s guess! There were also home remedies that sound a little alarming and were certainly uncomfortable. For a cold in the chest: “Apply mustard mixed with olive oil and rub the chest and the back around the ribs. If done properly it will not blister.” And “put brandy in a saucer and set it alight. When the flame dies, drink it.” We could suppose that if you drank enough, you would forget all about your complaint! Some of these remedies seem to be not only difficult to maintain, but downright dangerous, as in the cure for violent pains in the head: “Mix mustard, flour and oil in a bag and wear it on the nape of the neck for as long as possible.”

Blue bags were handy for bee stings, kerosine was used to get rid of nits and was also a trusted cure for a variety of other ailments.

Or for neuritis, you could “mix French iodine with potash of iodine, water and sarsaparilla and take a dessert spoon three times a day.”

Kerosine, especially with a spoonful of sugar, was useful to cure all manner of things in those days according to

They were made of sterner stuff in those days! Copyright Helen McAnulty 2021

TIMEWARP Telegraph at Orange race meeting

A vital part of the organisation of Orange race meetings in the 1950s was the telegraph office. The Morse line was primarily for the use of bookmakers on the course. Telegrams lodged in Sydney or Melbourne addressed to bookmakers at the racecourse were delivered three minutes after the time of lodgement. Pictured are telegraphist Mr A McPherson (foreground) and telegraph messenger B Dunn.
