Higher honours

Thinking of Painting,

Painting...

in line for

We’re not happy until you are.

Business Award winners Higher honours await this year’s Orange Business Award winners. Last year’s cancelled ceremony due to COVID-19 gives added meaning to the 2021 event, Orange Business Chamber President Jack Evans also believes.

“People will be happy to get-out and enjoy themselves, I think, so it will be a good event in that regard,” he added.

This year’s restricted black-tie event in August will also offer great opportunities for networking with attendance limited to business owners to ensure social distancing requirements are met.

Higher honours also await winners of this year’s event with reduction and tweaking of categories to align them with regional and State awards.

“We’re looking forward to the re-emergence of this major business event,” Jack explained, adding that the winners this year will have succeeded during some of the toughest trading conditions for small business in living memory. “That is an assumption that we are keeping very much in mind,” he said. “In essence, if you win this year, you’ve done so in what has been a very difficult year,” Jack added. He said that COVID-19 restrictions have also limited numbers attending and the traditional-celebratory nature of the evening. “We’ve had to change it up a little bit. Traditionally it’s a huge crowd… it essentially used to be a huge night out on the town for the businesses with all their staff, we’d often have 400-plus attending,” he explained. “But now we’re going to reduce it all to about a quarter of the numbers. We’re just inviting the finalists, the busines owners, and their partners,” Jack added. “We’re looking at a more formal black-tie event rather than a celebratory night out… We’re looking at about 120–150 people,” he added. With almost all Chamber business awards cancelled last year due to the pandemic (Dubbo held theirs late in 2020); this event will be part of the “coming-out of COVID” year 2021 is shaping up as.

Last year’s cancelled Orange Business Awards due to COVID-19 gives added meaning to the 2021 event, Orange Business Chamber President Jack Evans believes.

“We’ve reduced the number of categories by a couple, there’s now 12 categories… we rejigged them so that just about all are aligned with NSW and regional awards,” Jack explained.

“This will mean that they are not just recognised at the local level but, if you win in Orange, you then go onto the regional awards as well,” he added. Nominations for this year’s awards are open until Friday, May 21 and can be accessed at: orangechamber.com.au/ (follow the link on the website to “Nominate”.) Nominations will then be used to select three finalists per category who will all be announced at a “finalists’ night” in July. The selected finalists will be invited to attend the Orange Business Awards presentation in August. The winner of certain categories will also be eligible to compete in the Business NSW Regional Business awards later in the year. “It looks like the Awards will be at the Grand Ballroom of the Hotel Canobolas on Friday, the 20th of August. “This will be a way of recognising the businesses that have excelled in our local economy in a year that was booming in some ways, but was also very trying for many as well,” Jack concluded. A Soldiers Story

HistoryTALKING with HELEN McANULTY

On 31st October, 1916, three young men from Orange left Australia in the steamship “Marathon” bound for England. They had just completed their training with the Fifth Division of Engineers which was part of the Fifth Division of the AIF, and were on their way to join the Allied forces who were fighting against the German army in France. Arnold Caldwell, Leonard Crockett and Alf Mead had been schoolmates and were no doubt excited at the thought of being on the other side of the world. The Engineers, also known as Sappers, were essential to the running of the war. Without them the other branches of the Allied Forces would have had difficulty crossing the muddy, shell ravaged ground of the Western Front. Sapper Caldwell wrote letters to his parents, Mr and Mrs A. T. Caldwell of the Public School, Orange East and these were published in the Orange “Leader” newspaper during the final years of the war. Arnold was a draughtsman in the Orange Lands Office, having qualified for the position while at Orange High School, and was twenty years old when he enlisted. He was also a keen observer with an ability to express his thoughts and experiences in his numerous letters. On reaching England the Engineers were first camped on the Salisbury Plains in Wiltshire.

It was January and the ice and snow lay on the ground when he wrote his first letter home. “The eternal cold is a nuisance and makes it hard to get comfortable but in my opinion it isn’t as bad as the cold in Orange in the winter!” By May he was at the headquarters for the 14th Field Company, a few miles behind the lines in France from he where wrote to his parents again. “We have spent most of the time digging dugouts. We haven’t had any casualties yet, though I think there have been some very close calls. We are right in among the big guns here. They get going about three in the morning and I’ve never heard anything like it. A night bombardment is like a lovely

fireworks display--the flash of the guns and the bursting shells are pretty themselves and we can see the flares, red, green, orange and white, going up all the time.” He signed off with a word of comfort to his family. “Don’t worry about me. I reckon a man would be terribly unlucky to get hit”.

On 10th June, 1917, summer had finally come to the battlefields of France and Arnold wrote again. “We are still having beautiful weather, the trees are bright green and looking across the fields are just wavy stretches of colour--, buttercups and dandelions make them look like fields of gold, with poppies, daisies, forgetme-nots and a host of other colours. But across them all run the long snake-like entanglements, the smashed trenches, the thousand shell holes, and here and there a little wooden cross of some soldier, Allied or German, which speaks silently and eloquently of the struggle which has passed over these selfsame fields of yellow. And even if one could forget these things and miss out the torn and broken villages and ruined homes, the many crossed cemeteries and the prevailing devastation, there rises always the roar and thunder of the guns and the iron throated reminder that nations are at war.” In the days leading up to 26th September, 1917, the men of the 5th Australian Division prepared for their first major battle in Belgium. They managed to turn an allied defeat into a major victory at the Battle of Polygon Wood, part of the third battle of Ypres.

On 5th October, Arnold was probably camped near Amiens, and wrote again to his parents in Orange. “The weather is beginning to be very cold and wet and I’m doing a bit of a shiver. I don’t suppose our Xmas will be much over here ....., but I dare say we will rake up something for it. We are camped near the most famous town of the war--of course I can’t name it, but you should see it after three years of hammering, there’s not much left of it.....it would have been beautiful once, but now it is just a pile of debris.....a stretch of desolation, broken trees and torn ground. At intervals over it are spurts of flame and

clouds of smoke that mean guns, or big black splashes where shells are bursting. “We had a great sight yesterday when we saw an air fight and two of Fritz’s planes came down within five minutes of each other. In the first plane a chap fell out while he was still about 2000 feet up. One of the planes had a wing cut off by machine gun fire before it fell, and the wing floated quite a distance until the rest of the plane came spinning down.”

It was nearly two months later that he wrote: “I am quite happy tonight as I have had quite a deluge of letters from Orange. The cards are beautiful and I am glad they are not the usual “gallant Anzac style”. The boys out here hate those things, not so much on account of modesty, but because it’s so hard to find all the glory and splendour that is supposed to be broadcast over the battle area. There is more mud than splendour and the only possibility of “ glory” is of going there at any moment! I am still dodging bullets....a few came impossibly close yesterday....you hear the shell coming miles off like the wail of a lost spirit.... such a delightful moaning screech ...you can generally tell whether it is coming close or not and, acting at your own discretion, duck, the lower the better. Indeed it is truly wonderful how low a man can sink in the world in those circumstances....just a second of uncertainty and the scream falls to a sob and with a rending crash the shell bursts. Then, when the pieces have stopped whirling through the air, you get up and feel if you are still all there and thank God that another one missed you.... I remember the first night I ever went into the Front line. It wasn’t quite dark and I was wading knee deep in the mud. Suddenly I stumbled and took two steps on something hard and saw a pair of heels sticking out of the mud....I have hardened since then.” On Friday, May 3rd, 1918, Mr and Mrs Caldwell received a cable telling them that their son had been gassed.

Following his rehabilitation in England, he returned to France for the battles of the Hundred Days Offensive which broke the back of the German war effort .

On 9th October he wrote an enthusiastic letter : “I have just received a bosker parcel from the citizens of Orange, containing biscuits, coffee, cocoa, soup tablets, soap, chocolate, cigarettes, salmon and sardines.”

Finally, on 11th November, 1918, he wrote to his parents from Blangy, a village in Normandy: “About 12o’clock the Post Office put up a wire--the Armistice is signed and the whole village went mad and has been mad all the afternoon....but all our thoughts are with you. I guess there will be excitement there, though you won’t know the news for a few hours yet. It’s good to know that at last it is all over for there will be no more fighting now.”

The last report in the “Leader” was on Monday, 5th May, 1919. “Sergeant Arnold Caldwell is on his way home to Australia on the “Kildonian Castle”. On the same ship are also Captain Bean, Australian official correspondent and Major Banjo Paterson.” Arnold Cassin Caldwell was the second of five children born to Arnold and Mary Caldwell. His father was headmaster of the Public School Orange East, from 1897 until 1931.
