Tidy Towns Committee Member Wendy Fisher; Orange Mayor, Councillor Reg Kidd; FoodCare chair Anne Hopwood (OAM); and Tidy Towns Committee Chairman, Cr Kevin Duffy.

FoodCare is a “Tidy Towns” winner; for we do not live on bread alone! It’s been a manageable pandemic for local award-winning food-bank, FoodCare, but things are about the heat-up! The local group was recently-recognised for its community spirit in the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Sustainable Communities – Tidy Towns awards. FoodCare chief Anne Hopwood (OAM) thinks though that the end of the special pandemic assistance could see a sudden need for their unique service offering fresh, frozen, packed, and canned grocery items free to about 120 locals a week in Orange. “No it wasn’t too bad, a lot of people got JobKeeper, JobSeeker, but we are pretty sure we’ll see increased numbers; it could be up to 20 per cent more, something like that,” she added. Volunteer Michael Horth said that the first few days after the end of JobKeeper had seen a slight rise in demand. “Today’s been quite busy. We’re a bit worried with the change in the job subsidies and the like; we don’t know what effect that will have,” he added. “Could be we’ll find-out after Easter.” As well as their food service, FoodCare is also providing unique real-world experience for Charles Sturt University medical students, Jaydh Gounden from Orange, and Mikeely Kent from Inverell. “It’s part of our Medicine in Context program” Jaydh explained. “It shows us how medicine works in the community and how health is impacted by people’s diet and eating habits,” he added. “It gives us an overall understanding of health, it’s a really holistic approach.” “This is a way of seeing how health impacts are in the

community, instead of just being in the hospital,” Mikeely explained. “We’re also helping and interacting with people so it’s something that we’re very happy to have the opportunity to do,” she added. FoodCare Orange’s win was in the “Community Spirit and Inclusion Award for populations over 20,000” with Wendy Fisher from Tidy Towns saying, “It’s a great award; Orange always does very well.” “This award is recognition of the work of the 60 volunteers who provide an invaluable service here,” Orange City Council Tidy Towns Committee Chairman, Councillor Kevin Duffy said at the presentation of the award at the March St facility recently, adding that providing a foodbank for low-income individuals and families is only one string to FoodCare’s bow. “It helps those that are struggling a little bit, not just with food, but also with human contact. It also provides a bus service for people to attend the place here,” he said. Volunteer Allan Dive explained that the stacked shelves come from a variety of sources, large markets in Sydney, local contributors, and supermarket chains in Orange. “For instance, a lot of the donations in fruit come from individual people,” he said. Ms Hopwood explained that the 17-year-old service works on a voucher system with charities like St Vincent De Paul issuing coupons which can then be redeemed at FoodCare. “All the agencies either refer people or have our vouchers, but

we only bill them for vouchers that are actually redeemed, not issued,” she explained. “We also value-add to that voucher with two litres of milk, a dozen eggs, and a packet of frozen meat, so it’s actually worth a lot more,” she explained. “All fruit and vegies are also free, but they have to spend $8 here first.” She added that home gardeners are regular suppliers of fresh fruit and vegetables with donations always welcome. “We love donations, if people are clearing-out their pantry, or anybody is moving house and with packet food they don’t want to take with them, bring it here!” she said. Volunteer Sue Patterson returned during the media event with a shopping basket load of fresh, frozen, and packet food donated by one of the local supermarkets (Woolworths) in Orange. “I go down there, and they give me what they can, they’re very helpful,” she said. Client Garry — making the point that man does not live on bread alone — says that sustenance is only one major service that FoodCare provides the community: “I’m on the old-aged pension and it gets me out of the house to see other people, they’re great people here,” he said. Opening hours for FoodCare at 142 March St are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10.30–1pm and also Thursdays from 4.30–6pm.

Sticks and stones…. I have a friend who spent several years behind bars for a crime he didn’t commit, before Police found the real offender. How often have we heard stories of cases like that? Lindy Chamberlain readily comes to mind. Former Attorney General Christian Porter has had his life turned upside down all on the strength of questionable claims that date back 30 years. Look what’s happened since! Nearer to home I too have been the victim of several damaging social media rants by people who have simply embellished or distorted the truth over certain events to suit their own ends. I know others who have faced the same vicious and untrue attacks. Disgraceful incidents like this are all too common and it doesn’t matter what is said, how it is said or who says it, some of the mud always sticks. That’s not the worst part. If you try to correct mistakes, it just fans further damaging publicity. The people who engage in this type of smearing are in my view, people of very low calibre, but sadly there is very little anyone can do about it. Once the damage is done, it’s done. Unless you’re a Christian Porter who can engage high priced legal representation, where there’s no guarantees that justice will be served in any case, innocent people just have to cop it.

We’ve gained a new aspect of society where anyone can say anything about anyone, no matter how untrue, and in all likelihood, get away with it. Of course there are exceptions, if politicians or

celebrities say something as innocent or half joking like “Marise Payne is like the Prime Minister for Women”, it dominates the national news media in about the same way that news of a mass murderer being caught would. We really have lost the plot in many areas of life in these modern times and are now focusing on things that really don’t or shouldn’t matter anywhere near as much as they are. Donald Trump is famous for making the term Fake News so prevalent in today’s world, and he’s ridiculed for it, but why? The world is overrun with Fake News, we hear Fake News stories every day and even when everyone hears about it being Fake, nothing changes. The amount of Fake News that gets out there is scary to say the least, the fact that they can’t reign it in is more concerning. And if listening to Fake News isn’t bad enough, what about having to listen to what is very likely “spin” every time a politician opens their mouth as well. I don’t know what’s worse, Fake News or constant spin. My point in all this is this - I know what it feels like to be a victim of unfair, inaccurate and spiteful media coverage, and my issues don’t involve rape, murder or terrible things like that. I can’t imagine what people like Christian Porter must be going through right now, especially if they are innocent. We all need to be much more responsible and careful about how we report or spread information about other people. Fairness, accuracy and decency need to be uppermost in our minds before we hit the keyboard. The old saying “Sticks and stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me” don’t ring true anymore. Think about it!

“Knight to white square” Year-long victim of the COVID-19 restrictions — Orange’s famous junior chess tournament is back, and it’s looking to be bigger and better than ever! It’s not too late to sign-up for the return event this Saturday that is open to any young players of all standards. The tournament has not been held since January 2020 with its return representing another welcome step back towards normality in our lives. While online games have become popular during the lockdown with the ancient boardgame undergoing a pandemic boom, there’s nothing like a live “across-the-board” game, event organiser Bevan Clouston believes. “A lot of players have been missing ‘over-the-board’ tournaments, that’s definitely true,” he said. “it is a far better experience, for instance, the International Chess Federation only counts ‘over-the-board’ tournaments towards championship points. “There’s just something about the tactile feel of it all, it’s just a nicer environment,” Bevan added. He said that the 12-month-plus lockdown has

players rearing to get back into live tournaments. This — added to the renaissance this ancient board game enjoyed during the lockdown —, has seen a boost in numbers for the game worldwide. “For instance, for the Doeberl Cup in Canberra this weekend, we’ve had the largest number of entries ever, we have 338 entries which is huge,” he added. “It’s certainly gotten a boost coming-out of lockdown, we’re getting so many more numbers through than in the past; we’re expecting 40–50 for this tournament as well,” he added. Co-organiser for the past 15 years of the local tournament each school holidays, Joe Cummins says, like many board games and indoor activities, chess witnessed a boom in interest since the first lockdowns 12-months ago. “We normally have the tournament four times a year in Orange, but we weren’t allowed to play chess ‘over the board’ since the lockdowns,

Many locals would remember the singular sight of Glenn a decade-ago as he piggy-backed his twin sons and his daughter on his electric wheelchair going about his business in Orange. Glenn has recently got back in the saddle, returning to the vocation that first brought him to Orange. He believes that his message of healing and grace is as important now as ever. Glenn found his faith after a freak accident left him a quadriplegic in his teens. “I fell-off a waterfall at 19 in Papua New Guinea, near Lae. When you’re 19, you ignore these things like warnings and the like. One of those things young men do at an age when they think they are going to live forever. “It was only a small ledge that I hit; about thatwide,” he added, recalling a friend in hospital who had broken his spine landing on a sea turtle as he dived out of a boat into the ocean! “I became a Christian soon after I broke my neck and continued my journey after that, in fact, every Christian is called to serve.” Completing his theological studies at the Southern Cross Bible College, he eventually came to Orange as Minister at the Christian Ministry where he served for seven years. Leaving the ministry about five years ago, he has since run a highly-successful outreach program for the young in the Bowen area with

Late last year, he was then asked to fill the vacancy at the Mountain Hope Church when the pastor left for evangelical work with a Christian group North of Newcastle. “I was running a youth group at Bowen which my wife helped with; I actually had no intention of going back to ministry work, but our pastor left to go work with YWAM (Youth With a Mission) at Tahlee near Port Stephens,” he explained. “Because of my previous experience, I was the most obvious candidate, and it was a matter of us keeping-going or closing-down,” Glenn added. He believes that the small independent church group operating in one of Orange’s poorest areas is “a beautiful church” doing important work. “We still do brekkie at Bowen for many kids and provide Outreach for a big area of Orange,” he said. “I love it when I see people’s lives changed. I was involved with a heroin addict who went cold turkey (immediate withdrawal) which wasn’t easy, but he eventually reunited with his family,” he said.

“The Pope is head of the Catholic Church and the Queen is head of the Anglican Church, so there may have been a bit of competition there.

“It’s about telling the good news and seeing people take it on board,” he added.

“The old church buildings represented the Christian nation that we were 70–80 years ago. But the church is never the buildings, it’s the people.

“Christianity is very simple, we all fall short, and we need a saviour. Jesus told us to go and help others in need with the same love we have found in him, by doing this, great things can happen” he added.

“They’re amazing buildings and I love to see them maintained, but the cost of their upkeep must be substantial. I don’t want to see them torn-down, actually, I’d like to see then filled again,” he added.

For the moment, transport is again on Glenn’s mind and he is hoping to be able to really "motor around" Orange in the near future.

Endearing as it was to see, Glenn said that his years towing his twin boys Lachlan and Caleb standing on the back of his electric wheelchair as his daughter Rachel sat on his lap, was simply a practical solution to their situation. “I was in a manual wheelchair for 19 years but my shoulders

The collaboration is part of Newcrest’s $20M Community Support Fund, established to provide financial support to host communities and assist them with the challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

OVER $9 MILLION IN ROAD FUNDING FOR ORANGE AND THE CENTRAL WEST The Central West will benefit from more than $9 million in Australian Government and NSW Government funding to improve local roads, making them smoother, safer and more reliable. We know that if you are a country resident, you are far more likely to be seriously injured or killed in a road accident than you are if you’re from the city. The cold hard truth is that the road toll is higher in the bush than metropolitan areas. The trauma from country road accidents is devastating not only for victims but also for police and emergency services personnel who have to attend the accidents. One of the silver linings of the COVID-19 pandemic has been the turbo-charging of key investments in country roads. Not only will these projects help save lives, but they will give country communities a big economic shot in the arm by making possible roadworks that would have otherwise been sitting on council waiting lists.

√ $18 million for a world-class health research facility

• Near Orange, Beasley Road, Lucknow which links the Mitchell Highway to Spring Hill will be upgraded at a cost of $1.5 million. • Heavy patching will be undertaken on Blayney’s Panuara Road to the cost of $1.9 million. • Borenore Road from Bradleys Road intersection to Akhurst Rd in the Cabonne Council LGA will receive $1.4 million for an upgrade. Borenore Road takes a lot of traffic, particularly during the Australian National Field Days, as it’s the main access to the site. These improvements include widening and straightening, which will make it much safer for locals and visitors alike. Cabonne Council will be doing the work and I know they’re very keen to get it cracking. Round 2 of the Fixing Local Roads Program will fund more than 100 new road upgrades across NSW, creating more than 1000 jobs. All successful projects will be completed within two years to ensure local communities see the benefits as quickly as possible.

Workshops and sale prices as Art Pop-up shuts down with a bang

It was only meant to run for a few weeks, but nearly five months and $20,000 worth of sales later, Orange’s pop-up group art exhibition at the Summer Centre is finally calling it quits. “It is just that I’m tired and need time to rejuvenate!” said local painter and sculptor Hank Spirek, who was the driving force behind the group exhibition.

“I think there’s a future in this sort of approach to things, but I’m finding myself thinking about this place all the time and not about my artwork and I need time to think about my art to move it forward.” It was over a year ago, that Hank put the call out for any landlords willing to let their vacant retail premises to artists. After coverage by Orange City Life and other media, Summer Centre owner Paul Saunders got in touch with

Hank and made the art pop-up a reality. “I want to thank Paul Sanders… really a deep, meaningful thank-you to Paul for the opportunity to do this,” said Hank. “It’s been a great success. We’ve had almost $20,000 worth of sales, and 96 works have sold from across the three artist groups that are here.” More than just the sales, Hank said he considers the successful collaboration between so many different art groups to have a major achievement and one he hopes they can build on in the future.

The art pop-up will run until April 26, but with F.O.O.D. Week just around the corner, there are some special plans in the work.

“It has really been a plus that all the artists have been able to get together and work together, and I think the concept could be developed further, the concept of having these different groups with a range of approaches to art has hit a positive chord with people,” he said.

“We are making special emphasis on the F.O.O.D. Week period, we are going to have art demonstrations most of the days during F.O.O.D. Week here in the gallery… there will be a sale of 10 percent off on selected work, and we are going to extend the days that we are open. So we will be open from the 8th, seven days a week, right through to the end of F.O.O.D. Week.

Fun activities available across the city these school holidays Orange City Council’s events calendar is packed full of fun activities for children to enjoy during the upcoming school holidays. With a wide range of hands-on workshops planned across Orange Regional Museum, Orange Regional Gallery, Orange City Library and Orange Youth Hub, there is sure to be something to keep the kids entertained. Orange Mayor Reg Kidd encouraged parents and children to check-out what’s available and sign-up for the activities, many of which are free.

Occasional care becomes more affordable for many Orange families Eligible families may now claim the Federal Government’s childcare subsidy rebate when using Orange Occasional Care. The Occasional Care Cottage in Kite Street is a community-based, not-for-profit centre within Orange City Council’s Children’s Services network. Occasional Care provides flexible child care in an emergency, short-term or on a temporary basis for children aged between six weeks and five years. Orange Mayor, Cr Reg Kidd welcomed the change and said it would make the service more affordable. “Orange Occasional Care is a one-of-a-kind service in Orange for anyone who needs short-term, flexible care for their children,” Cr Kidd said. “It’s great for parents or carers who do shift work, or casual shifts who need flexible hours instead of being locked into a set weekly bookings as is the case with most long-day care centres. “It’s also perfect for people who have appointments, job interviews or simply for people who want to get the shopping done, have a haircut, or have some respite from having young children in tow.” Orange Occasional Care has been successful in its bid to qualify for the Federal Government’s child care subsidy, which means eligible families will pay less per hour for the service. Orange City Council’s Senior Children’s Services Coordinator, Melissa Stanford said parents and carers need to check with Centrelink about their eligibility for the child care subsidy. “The child-care subsidy is means-tested but, in most cases, families will pay considerably less to send their children to our Occasional Care Service,” Ms Stanford said. “We have also recently extended our opening hours from Monday to Friday 8.30am to 4.30pm. “These two initiatives combined will make Orange Occasional care a very attractive service for a lot more families in the area.” Ms Stanford encourages anyone interested in learning more about Orange Occasional Care, or Orange Family Day care to attend a free twilight playgroup at the Occasional Care cottage at 85 Kite Street on Wednesday between 5pm and 7pm. Foodcare picks up prize at Tidy Towns awards Orange has been recognised for its community spirit in the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Sustainable Communities – Tidy Towns awards.

The bar set high for Orange’s biggest garage sale — MELISE COLEMAN —

The Naylor Pavilion at the Orange Showground came alive and Orange’s Biggest Garage Sale didn’t disappoint raising a whopping $25,000, with the money to be distributed to local men’s health groups.

The garage sale, an initiative of the Rotary Club of Orange Daybreak pulled almost three thousand people through the gates with most of the 3,000 items sold also. “We thought we’d raise maybe $5,000,” said Member of Rotary Club of Orange Daybreak, Stuart Smith. “We are all surprised and very happy that it went off so well. It was great for our club, after COVID to have an event like this and it’s great to kick off our fundraising, which has been severely restricted

because of COVID.” Stuart mentioned the day was a lot of fun for all, with Rotary members dressing up in tune with the sections they were selling, whether that be books, plants or preservatives. “It was interesting to see the vintage items being purchased by younger people, things such as fur coats and Harris Tweed men’s coats. “Our sporting section went well, things including bikes and exercise machines were sold, so that

means there could be a lot of fit people,” laughed Stuart, “And a lot of furniture went also.” “It was a big effort by our club, and we had fantastic support from the public with their donations. It has set the bar very high; we want to thank community volunteers who helped and the public who attended. “We were proud to pull the whole club together and have all members involved. We may well do it again in the future.. but we aren’t rushing, as it was a huge effort.”

OCLife changing face of orange

Orange is not the same town it what is in the 1990s, or even the 2000s. This occasional series from Orange City Life will look-at how the Colour City has changed over recent years with a revealing, enlightening, and, sometimes, light-hearted look at the Orange of today, and tomorrow! What are the odds that; 20 years ago you would find a group of locals undertaking “spiritual drumming” on top of Mount Canobolas during a phase of the full-moon? Yet that’s what local professional massage therapist and hypnotist Jenny Stephens and adherents participated in recently. But for Jenny, this is not some "New-Age" spiritualism, but one of the most ancient forms of therapy practiced for millennia by humans. “Drums are one of the most common of musical instruments in tribal societies, almost all cultures had them,” Jenny said. “This is old, old medicine, it goes back to the very start,” she added. Drums are the most widespread and common of musical instruments in tribal societies, for good reason, she believes. Because drumming does not only soothe the hearer, but the drummer as well, the basis of modern spiritual drumming.

Spiritual drumming taps OLDEST FORM OF THERAPY

“It allows a person to clear their thoughts of everything around them willingly,” she explained. “When you’re drumming, you get into a type of trance that clears your mind. "it’s not quite a form of hypnosis because you’re still quite aware and in control.” The impact is not only percussive but also repetitive; allowing for participants to “lose themselves” in the process. “The rhythmic effects of the drumming, the sound vibration, holds their attention, it’s a focusing exercise,” she said. “It’s about utilising our sense of sight, sound and touch and, as well, we also burn white sage. “With the sage, the idea is to get you into a mood, everything is away from the 'here', same as the prayers used by the Carmelite Nuns,” Jenny explained.

Gallery extension takes Flight with

Olsen gift

Legendary Australian artist John Olsen (AO) is kicking-off Orange Regional Gallery extension later this year with donation of one of his emblematic landscapes.

“When I heard about the conservatorium of music [relocating] as well, I thought, ‘wow, this is going to be such a wonderful thing for the people of the town’,” Mr Olsen said.

Olsen offered the major work after visiting the construction site in late-2020 and hearing about the $5 million project.

Orange Regional Gallery Director Brad Hammond said the new additions had significantly enhanced Orange Regional Gallery’s permanent collection.

The donated painting, Flight to Merinderoo (Minderoo), Pilbara, (2019), was inspired by a visit he made to the remote Pilbara region of Western Australia as a guest of Andrew Forrest. He has also donated a bronze sculpture, Basho’s Frog Dancing (2018), and four exceptional works on paper.

“While the collection already features paintings by many notable artists, it has lacked a major work by John Olsen, one of Australia’s most iconic painters,” he said.

“I think Orange is a wonderful town with beautiful parks and a very urbane culture,” Mr Olsen said. “I was moved by what is about to happen, with a wonderful extension of the gallery. I just thought, I could play a small part in making the pudding plumper.” The artist was also impressed by plans to relocate Orange Regional Conservatorium to the cultural precinct in future. “When I saw the highlysophisticated extension I thought, ‘how exciting that the gallery will now play more of a prominent part in the community’.

“We are looking forward to exhibiting these recent acquisitions in our newly-extended and refurbished Gallery in Spring 2021.” Orange Mayor, Councillor Reg Kidd thanked Mr Olsen for his generous gift and welcomed such a valuable addition to the gallery’s permanent art collection. “I’m pleased the expansion has the support of such a prominent Australian artist who recognises the significance of the project for the gallery and the city of Orange,” Cr Kidd said. During his visit to the gallery, Mr Olsen said he was impressed by the developments and took particular interest in the extension’s natural lighting design, storage facility and lecture theatre.

Garage Sale Mystery

Does the thought of finding hidden treasure amongst dusty heaps of someone else’s unwanted belongings fill you with excited anticipation? You will appreciate then, how a friend of mine felt a few years ago when, at a clearing sale in the Central West, amongst the items for sale were three very disturbing photographs which caught his attention. He contacted me to tell me his story and show me his find. The three large framed images depicted scenes of utter desolation in the aftermath of battle. One shows bodies of soldiers strewn on a denuded field, with some on stretchers being carried by the few men left alive. The picture is one of mud, devastation and horror. On the back is written “The Dawn of Passchendaele --Zonib Zonnebeke, 12th October, 1917." Another is hand-tinted and shows a blasted forest. What was once a place of peace and beauty has been completely stripped, the stark tree stumps reflected in the muddy pools of water in the foreground. It is inscribed “Near Passchesndaele, 1918," and then, in pencil in cursive script, the name ‘Loneragan’. The third photograph is of a more peaceful scene. Three soldiers wearing perhaps New Zealand army hats, stand in silhouette overlooking a river and pointing to church spires and magnificent buildings.

This is obviously before the battle. Could it be Brussels or Ypres? We are not to know, but again, in pencil is written”Lonnegan’—a misspelling of ‘Loneragan perhaps? The battles for Ypres and Passchendaele were horrifying and huge numbers of British, Canadian, New Zealand and Australian soldiers were killed, maimed and wounded. "It rained incessantly and every shell hole and mine crater filled with water and virtually every ditch and stream had been dammed by shell-torn earth. The entire battlefield was a morass," wrote John Laffin in 'Australia at War.' It is here that the mystery of the photos gather momentum. After some research, I made more discoveries. It seems that Father Cecil Loneragan, the youngest child of Brigid and James Loneragan (Founder of the Jas. Loneragan stores in Mudgee), served as a chaplain in The First World War and was twice mentioned in dispatches. He filed a report of his service from September, 1916 until February, 1919. “I cannot find words to describe the patience and endurance of these men, who stuck it out amid muck and rain,

snow and frost, for months, lived in underground burrows with lice and rats, worked like coolies all hours of the day and night, listened to the screech and crump of shells through interminable weeks, saw their own comrades wiped out by their side, bore wind and rain and heat and cold, keeping as cheerful as might be and as clean as they could….”( as reported in the Catholic Weekly, 24|4|05) He also mentioned that, among the battles in which he was involved as a chaplain, was the Zonnebeke-Passchendaele operation on October 12th, 1917-the very date written on the back of the photographs! But here the mystery deepens even further. Was it Father Cecil who took these images of the battlefield? It is known that he had an interest in photography, but would he have had the necessary equipment and time to set up a tripod in such desolation? Yet, if the photos are the work of professionals like Frank Hurley or Charles Bean, both of whom were on the Western Front, would it not be acknowledged somewhere on the picture?

What were these treasures doing at a garage sale, unnoticed and unwanted? With more detective work, an intriguing story emerged. Francis James Loneragan , the brother of Father Cecil, enlisted in the British Army in 1915 and fought many battles along the Western Front. In October, 1917, he was wounded at Passchendaele and, upon his recovery, went on to serve for the rest of the war. However—if he was wounded in October,1917, and even if he had the time and equipment, which seems unlikely, he would certainly not have been able to take that photograph. So was it Father Cecil Loneragan who, as an Australian Army chaplain, was also in Passchendaele on October 12th, 1917? The mystery seemed to be insolvable until my friend took them to the Australian War Memorial. It was the image entitled “Dawn of Passchendaele, October 12th, 1917" that caused the most interest. It was indeed the work of Frank Hurley, a remarkable man, who became the first official photographer to the A.I.F. The photo was a fine example of his craft and was not in the War Museum’s collection. It was decided that Father Cecil had probably purchased the print in memory of his superior, Father Michael Bergin, who was killed at his post at Passchendaele on October 12th, 1917. Later, having no descendants, he gave it to his brother, Frank. The mystery was solved, or as close to the truth as could be found, but, the haunting images of those long-dead heroes stayed with us for a very long time afterwards. Copyright 2021 Helen McAnulty

Trang is certainly not short of ambition and has the work ethic to see her dreams through. From small beginnings selling Vietnamese jerky at local markets, Trang has invested in her own food truck, opened a Summer Street restaurant, and also operates a thriving business in the Orange City Centre Food Court. Not one to sit still, she has rebranded her Summer Street store Trang’s Kitchen (formerly Trang Hue) and expanded the menu offerings and extended trading hours to give Orange a taste of the food from her hometown near the city of Hue. “Everywhere in Vietnam the food is similar, but some like the food sweeter, some like it lighter, but I think Hue and Hoi An do the best food in Vietnam!” said Trang, whose menu is especially suitable for sharing. “In Vietnam we usually sit down and eat

“Chicken lemongrass — a lot of people order that one — lemongrass with beef, lemongrass with pork, grilled pork chop with rice, the steamed pork belly and crispy pork are popular too, and a lot of people love our papaya salad, so we have a lot of options,” said Trang.

Orange Electrical Works quickly expanded to establish a branch in Bathurst in 1925. In that same year Michael Sanifer left the business. In Orange, the business added appliance and auto electrical repairs to their services and later refrigeration and air-conditioning. The outbreak of World War II, saw a number of staff members leave to join the war effort and caused work to dry up, but business boomed in the following decades. They relocated their premises to the corner of Summer and Sale Streets, opening a retail shop front with a workshop out back. The shop remained open until 1972, with the workshop remaining until 1981 when the business relocated to its current address at Barrett Court. OB Green died in the 1962, and the Managing Director role passed to his son John, who was David Boulton’s first boss “I started as an apprentice in 71 and I’m still here 50 years on! I worked with John for nearly 25 years, until he retired in 1995,” said David, who purchased the business off John with his wife Nerralie.

“They actually had them all working,” said David Boulton,

The ceiling, walls and floor of the octagonal room are fully mirrored and edged with blue LED lights, the effect being that the space appears to stretch into infinity in every direction.

John remained interested in the business until he passed away in 2016. He was very well respected in the industry and under his leadership Orange Electrical Works undertook a large amount of technical work around the state, including lift repairs, large air-conditioning systems and cool stores, power generation systems and much more.

The design of the room is based on the principles of sacred geometry, explains Juan-Pierre (JP) Rossouw, who with his partner Jessica Musto is the founder of Genesis Blu Wellness — the first Blu Room therapy treatment centre in Australia.

“We still do larger electrical work, lifts and escalator repairs and maintenance which are things other people don’t want to do, some commercial catering equipment repairs and inhome repairs and those sorts of things,” said David. Small appliance repairs, once a large part of the business, are a thing of the past as it is no longer economical to do so.

“We saw the Blu Room overseas in the U.S and tried it out,” says Jessica.

"Solar installation and air condition are a major part of the business today," said David. And, just as the business has always adapted to changes in the past, Orange Electrical Works is always on the lookout for new business opportunities.

“We both liked our experiences and knew that technologies like these are the future of wellness so we thought wouldn’t it be great to open one in Australia?”

“We’ve just taken on the Solahart agency here in Orange for solar power and solar hot water systems,” he said.

With a license for the US-patented technology, JP and Jessica are now offering Blu Room therapy from their home which is set on tranquil grounds on the wooded slopes of Mount Canobolas.

“We can build on that, as it hasn’t been pushed a great deal in this area before… And air conditioning, we have bit of work in that area, there’s always demand for that and we just keep an eye out for electrical contracts that come out.”

body. So the Blu Room helps you go into a relaxed state called the Theta State, giving your body the ultimate opportunity to heal itself.”

Additionally, with the UVB Narrowband lights, the Blu Room assists with the production of Vitamin D, a commonly deficient vitamin which is well known by research, to be at the core of many ailments.

“It is different for everybody, but straight away there’s a calmness and you feel more relaxed after you come out, and if you can learn to relax and then hardwire that state of mind in your everyday life you will see the benefits.”

“A lot of people report that they feel like they are floating or feel a little more connected or more creative,” says JP.

Altogether the blue atmosphere of the Blu Room, a combination of frequency, music and light therapy, helps you relax and go into a deeper state of mind.

Bordering the Mount Canobolas State Recreation Area, high up on Old Canobolas Road, the location of Genesis Blu Wellness is itself a calming experience.

During each 20-minute session in the Blu Room, you remain fully clothed with eye protection and are exposed to controlled doses of UVB Narrowband light from lamps mounted on the walls. Initially the lights are on for just three minutes, with the exposure gradually increased over repeated visits.

Set in beautiful bushland, it is also the home of JP, Jessica and their daughter Maya and there is a welcoming, family feel to the place. “This place became available and it is just perfect”, says the couple, who has bigger plans for the future of Genesis Blu Wellness. ”We want to incorporate the Blu Room with other wellness modalities.”

The music is chosen for its specific frequency range; in this instance ‘Clair de Lune,’ which seems particularly appropriate given the English translation of ‘Moonlight’ and the soft blue

“And I think vegetarians will find a lot of really good options here and vegans… Everyone who tries our caramelised soy eggplant and pepper need to get the sauce straight away! They beg me for jars for that sauce!”

Founded by Oliver Bolam Green with Michael Sanifer, Orange Electrical Works actually preceded the arrival of electrical power to Orange homes and businesses by two years. In those early days, OB (as he was known) built and repaired batteries which were charged on kerosene generators, he also specialised in magneto repairs — magnetos then being vital for engine ignitions, telephones and early forms of electric lighting. OB also carried out a successful electroplating trade.

“They also had commercial electrical things like pumps and motors and there was a thing called ‘X-Ray lighting — nothing to do with x-rays, but X-Ray lighting was the thing to have in your shop windows. It brought out the true colours, so it said.”

The many ‘labour-saving’ devices electricity afforded were a big selling point at the time and Orange Electrical Works put on a special display at the 1923 Orange Show, demonstrating ‘For the Housewife” the benefits of electric irons, toasters, kettles, vacuum cleaners, dish and clothes washing machines.

“Trang’s special noodle is very nice. You have barbecue pork and chicken skewers and one spring roll with rice noodles and fresh salad — that’s our best seller at the moment, along with my fresh lemon juice! If you have a hangover, you’re tired, have our lemon juice and it will wake you up, it is very refreshing!”

If you do manage to look past the tasting plates, there is plenty to temp you in the rest of Trang’s extensive menu, from Vietnamese Pork Rib, Shaking Cube Beef, Caramelised Pork Belly to Bao Buns and Green Papaya Salad.

But with the arrival of reticulated power in 1923, the workload of Green and Sanifer grew as they busily wired homes and business for light and power — usually a light in (most) rooms and a single power point in the kitchen.

For those who struggle with indecision, Trang has her own recommendations on where people should start on the menu.

“What I wanted was to share my family dinner, get people to sit down and wrap themselves a delicious healthy dinner.”

SIMON AND GARFUNKEL – OR “TOM AND JERRY,” OR “KANE AND GARR.”

It was just five years from the first big hit for Simon and Garfunkel, that they went their separate ways. From their meeting in 1953 to this day, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel have had a rocky relationship marked by personal spats and professional separations. They were apart and feuding for about as much time as they were actually working together! Simon and Garfunkel grafted-away for a lot of years to achieve their worldwide star status, earning them respect from fans and critics alike for their work ethic and talent. Their first song was recorded at a studio near their home borough of Queens in New York where they were spotted by a small-time record label owner, Sid Prosen, who had a label called "Big Records". At the time, the lads were just 15 and went under the name “Tom and Jerry.” Now, apparently Sid wasn’t opposed to a little bit of payola (money to play records), and in 1957 handed a Radio DJ named Alan Freed $200 to play the young lads single “Hey Schoolgirl.” That kick-started a little airplay on AM radio around the US and it made number 49 on the Billboard chart. That same year saw the first flare-up between 32 APRIL 8—14, 2021

the pair though when Paul Simon released a solo single called “True or False.” Garfunkel felt betrayed by the incident and it led to a six year split. In 1963, the pair reunited and became part of the fast-growing folk music movement. At that time, they were performing as “Kane and Garr.” It was at this time they wrote and recorded “The Sounds of Silence”. On the strength of that song, they signed with Columbia Records and their first LP, “Wednesday Morning, 3AM” was quickly released under the Simon and Garfunkel name. The album bombed and promotional performances they did to support the release didn’t go well either. Paul Simon then left the duo and lived in England through 1964 into 1965. After a visit from Garfunkel in late 1964, the pair returned to New York at about the same time and, by coincidence, after some renewed interest from US radio in “The Sounds of Silence” single, Columbia Records decided to take another look at it. Inspired by Bob Dylan’s folk rock hybrid “Like a Rolling Stone,” Columbia’s Tom Wilson decided to have some studio musicians add extra instrumentation.

Despite Paul Simon being horrified by the new version, the remix worked and, by January 1966, it was number one in the US, selling a million copies. It was released that same month in Australia where it peaked at number three on the local charts. The hit-making floodgates then opened! Almost immediately, “Homeward Bound” was rush-recorded and released making the US and Australian Top 10. Then the classic “I Am A Rock” peaked at number three in the US. But the duo felt the recording of “The Sounds of Silence” album was rushed and decided to produce the “Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme” album. But after a period of prolific creativity including writing “Hazy Shade of Winter” - Paul Simon suffered writer’s block. It meant that, in 1967, there was no Simon and Garfunkel album release. However, their next album, “Bookends” was being worked on throughout that year. Along with “Hazy Shade of Winter,” 1968's “Bookends” also featured “Mrs Robinson,” a song that had featured in the movie, “The Graduate.” The song and movie's success propelled them into the superstar category.

Alongside the writing, recording and touring, both also had their own projects through the last part of the 60s. For Art Garfunkel, it was mainly acting that attracted his attention. With their hectic individual lifestyles taking-over, the duo released their final studio LP, “Bridge Over Troubled Water” in early 1970. And what a way to go-out! The title track was an Australian chart number one, while “The Boxer” made the top 10, “Cecelia” peaked at 11 in Australia, and “El Condor Pasa” was yet another number one. There were occasional reunions in the 1970’s, but in 1981 they agreed to play in New York’s Central Park, and half a million people showed up! Tens of millions also saw it on TV. The rise of Simon and Garfunkel to folk rock legend status was complete. I saw them in concert a bunch of years ago and they were brilliant. How good? Well... They played the Sydney Olympic Basketball arena, which is possibly one of the worst concert venues in the world, and STILL they had us from start to finish! Talent wins through in the end, and Simon and Garfunkel were — and are — simply special.

THE ORANGE ART SOCIETY’S FEATURED ARTISTS FOR APRIL 2021 ARE

Wanda Driscoll and Jennifer Lacey. Wanda Driscoll has displayed a talent to capture scenery in watercolour on paper or oils on canvas for several years and continues to travel Australia looking for ideal subjects. Her paintings depict a wide range of subjects from the ever-changing moods of the Australian Outback to the Blue Mountains. “I capture the soft hues of the everpopular rose to the bright abundant wildflowers of springtime in my paintings” said Wanda, “I paint traditional and contemporary artworks in oils, watercolour and mixed media.” Wanda is a regular tutor with the Orange Art Society and many other groups throughout the Central Western Region. Having grown-up in the Central West of NSW, Jennifer Lacey obtained qualifications as a Visual Arts teacher (Bachelor of Education), a Graduate Diploma of Educational Studies, degrees in Science and Law and she is currently working on a PhD in law. Jennifer studied painting, drawing, ceramics, fibre arts, design and photography, holding her

first exhibition of paintings in 1985. Since then, she has taught in the Department of Education and several independent schools. Her students’ works have been selected for the prestigious Art Express exhibition and have been purchased by the Department of Education. Jennifer is interested in exploring the intrinsic aesthetic qualities found in nature as well as those in line, shape, and colour. “My non-objective or non-figurative pieces recognise the inherent beauty of design elements particularly as expressed in their relationship to each other.” said Jennifer, “while it is possible to discern antecedents from nature in my work, I believe that the exercise of creativity is to extract, manipulate and synthesise the parts of interest and to exploit the qualities of a medium to create a new, personal interpretation. I imply the landscape rather than describing it, I take forms from nature; mushrooms, seed pods, insect wings, fossils etc, and work intuitively to create a new and personal response to the subject matter.”

Paintings of the early Renaissance, 17th century Dutch genre, still-life and, most of all, the Australian painter Fred Williams, are Jennifer’s favourites. She is currently exploring found objects in small relief sculptures. Our April Exhibition will open on Saturday, 10 April 2021 at the Orange Art Society Gallery in Sale Street (entry located at the rear of the Woolworth’s carpark near Harris Farm). Everyone is welcome and are encouraged to come along on to view Wanda and Jennifer’s exhibition. If the doors are open and the flag is out, the Gallery is open.
