COVID-19 HAPPENINGS Like everyone else, it’s hard not to be caught up in everything that’s going on with pandemic. In some respects, I’d like to just distance myself from the constant news bombardment, but of course, that’s just not possible. I often try to focus on the positives, but most news reports don’t help too much there either, particularly if one is looking for some balance. I’d also like to be able to stop thinking about just how bad things probably are, the real situation behind the scenes as it were. I suspect it’s a lot worse than we’re led to believe, or at least, it’s going to be.

Koh Samui, Thailand “Walking the streets of Koh Samui during their Songkran festival can be a bit of an ‘enter at your own risk’ experience, especially for tourists just wanting to do the touristy things. Ie. Not get saturated by water, though it is super fun. Amidst the clean up after the celebrations (days later), the streets become quieter, and locals are getting ready to open up their stores again. After exploring some back roads, I managed to snap this innocent picture of a local man on his bicycle, crutches in tow as he finishes his duties for the day.”

That said, I did see an ABC 7.30 Report last week, which among other things, mentioned how some of our farmers are benefitting from the pandemic. Apparently, there’s a big surge in demand for Australian grown food, with one farmer they interviewed saying that some farmers are feeling like Rock Stars. Not sure about you but that does my heart good, I’m one of those people who could never understand why we’d import so much food from overseas and then hear that our farmers had to burn or destroy similar locally grown products. Our farmers are considered among the best in the world and we have the capabilities of growing outstanding products here, and more than we need I believe, how this all works with overseas treaties etc. at the expense of our farmers' wellbeing and skill is beyond my little brain. Kindness is another word I’m hearing a lot lately, this too does my heart good. It appears that many people are showing increased kindness to others who are not doing as well as they are. Australians by their nature, have always been great givers to causes when the need arises and

personally, I’d like to see more organized and credible opportunities established so that people who want to do or give something, have opportunity to do so. Given some of the stories we’ve heard recently where donated money hasn’t gone to where it was intended, many people may be a bit wary so it would probably be best if any such opportunity was set up by Government. Of course, showing kindness or being generous doesn’t necessarily need a formal reason, you can demonstrate such qualities spontaneously at any time. Just last week, I heard of a lady caught at a supermarket checkout with a pile of groceries but for some reason her card wouldn’t work. Embarrassed, she said to the checkout operator that she’d have to leave the items. Just then a chap behind her said, here, let me pay for your groceries which he did promptly with no fuss. When she thanked him, he simply said no problems at all, maybe you can do something similar for someone one day. How great is that? Kindness can be shown in so many ways and it doesn’t always have to involve money. We’ve all heard how something as simple as a phone call, a kind word or a thoughtful gesture can lift someone’s spirits, or even save someone’s life. Christians know that the Bible declares the two most important commands in the world, both come from God. One says, “love God,” the other “love you neighbour.” Imagine if we all loved our neighbour more, and as a priority of life. Kindness (and love) would be everywhere and one can only imagine what that might look and feel like. Wow!

Daniel’s Focus — MELISE COLEMAN —

We couldn’t get enough when we came across Daniel Cooke’s photographs uploaded to his Instagram page. Incredibly breathtaking to say the least, last week we were able to chat with Daniel regarding his life for the past year and a half, when his family packed up their home in Orange, and moved to Sulphur Bay, Vanuatu.

aniel explains, “It was challenging at first but we have grown accustomed to the food and climate and lifestyle. We live in what in Australia would be called a tin shed but in this context it’s pretty flash (though a bit hot in summer). We are situated in the slopes of Mt Yasur Volcano. It has been erupting continuously. The sky glows an ethereal red at night behind our house. The shock waves from the explosions cause our tin house to rattle and the curtains to blow in. It is a curious sensation sitting on our pit toilet when the shock wave causes a puff of air to come up out of the hole! As a botanical watercolour Artist, I am fascinated (and daunted) by the caleidoscopic array of colourful plants

here. Whilst I do still crack open the paints every now and then and am itching to paint, I’ve found the camera to be a great creative outlet. I particularly like to capture natural portraits in black and white as well as aspects of the traditional culture. Most of the photos are taken on my phones Pixel two and three. I also have a Moment tele lens that I use sporadically. The volcanic ash and salt air make for a very harsh environment on camera gear, so I opted to leave my SLR and lenses at home. It’s also a lot less conspicuous. As they say, ‘the best camera is the one you have got with you’! Our main role has been to help and encourage the local Presbyterian church in Sulphur Bay. It has been challenging and energizing to learn two new languages

and to try to communicate the message of God’s love for people from every tribe and language into a different culture and worldview than my own. Sulphur Bay is famous for being the birth place of the John Frum cargo cult. Their belief centres around the enigmatic ‘John Frum’ who will one day return and bring with him all the trappings of Western civilization including education, trucks and iceboxes (refrigerators). The main overarching framework for all of life here, though, is kastom. This encompasses every aspect of life from making rain come or go away, to who can officially harvest the first yam of the season, to who can dig a grave. Needless to say, our involvement in Sulphur Bay is a tremendous privilege

OCLife and we are gently and respectfully endeavouring to do more good than harm! Jen has been teaching our kids at home but they also go to the local school with their many friends. Jen has had the opportunity to train the local teachers as well. Life in the village is a very communal affair, which means there are lots of celebrations and community events. It also means that your business is everyone’s business. In the last month or so we have participated in a couple of circumcision ceremonies, a first sick moon (period) for the chief’s daughter, two deds (funerals) and a kastom marriage. These all involve the exchange of copious amounts of woven mats, yams, kava and several unfortunate pigs. This is followed by a feast of laplap made of mashed root vegetables wrapped in leaves and cooked under hot rocks with the aforementioned pigs. The men then go to the nakamal (meeting place) and drink kava which they have chewed, spat, and squeezed into shared coconut shells. Vanuatu is one of just twelve countries

to have avoided Covid19. In the early days I spent a lot of time raising awareness about practicing good hygiene and informing people of the latest developments. Being such a communal society and not having the luxury of social distancing, viruses can spread rapidly. Sharing kava, and spit, a case in point! At times it can be quite confronting with death, sickness and conflict being regular parts of life. It can also be confusing due to miscommunication and conflicting expectations when our differing worldviews collide. For example, it’s easier for our friends to say ‘yes’ when they really mean ‘no’ so as not to cause offence. This can be problematic if we are depending on someone to pick us up or when planning any activities. FEDERAL MEMBER FOR CALARE ROUND 4 OF THE BUILDING BETTER REGIONS FUNDS ANNOUNCED Round 4 of the Building Better Regions Fund has been announced with $839,491 being invested into Cabonne communities. Seven different projects have received grants, with the funding going towards a variety of community development initiatives. The benefits are far-reaching for many community folk, ranging from showground and sporting facility upgrades, to preschool centre refurbishments, and community and medical centre upgrades. With projects being spread across five towns in Cabonne it’s a terrific result for these communities who can share in the funding allocated.

Your Country Your Voice $2,137,500 TO BOOST ROAD SAFETY & JOBS IN ORANGE The Australian and NSW Governments have announced that they will join forces to turbocharge a program which will improve roads in and around Orange, while also creating local jobs. The latest funding injection of $2,137,500 is comprised of a 50/50 contribution between the Australian Government and NSW Government. The funding will ensure that essential, shovel-ready projects can get moving as soon as possible, while increasing job opportunities for local tradies. Projects will need to be delivered within two years of receiving funding, to ensure that local communities are benefiting sooner.

THERE’S NO TELLING WHAT YOU’LL DISCOVER — JONATHAN ROE —

The National Library of Australia’s online archive Trove has unveiled a new-look interface and there is no better time to get acquainted with this truly amazing portal to the past. A love of history kind of runs in my family. My father is a historian and teacher and from a young age he used to read us short stories of Henry Lawson and other titbits of Australia’s colonial history.

My brothers and I lapped up Greek mythology, stories of Alexander the Great, the Roman Empire, and Medieval Europe. We knew inside-and-out my grandfather’s tales of his time in the Royal Navy – fighting the Vichy French fleet at Mers-el-Kebir, air raids at Alexandria, bombing Sabang

Harbour, and being on one of the first Allied ships in Tokyo Bay. Following school, I went on to formally study history and what I wouldn’t have given then to have had a resource like Trove. For those who are unaware, Trove is Australia’s truly amazing online culture and research portal. It brings together content from the National Library of Australia, State and Territory libraries, and hundreds of other libraries, cultural and research institutions around the country.

OCLife Trove gives access to an estimated 6.5 billion records — and it’s free! I first began using Trove about ten years ago, shortly after it was launched by the National Library, and I have been hooked ever since. It was while working for a local newspaper out west that I started to dig into Trove. A grant to the local library allowed them to digitise 70 years of the local paper starting from 1887 all of which was available through Trove. Over the next few years I would use Trove’s newspaper archive to dig up stories of local interest, like the history of local clubs, major events like floods and fires, bushrangers and bandits and some truly wild stories like battles in the street between communists and nationalistic locals. I have a bit of an interest in the bush poets of the west and have dug into the history of Henry Lawson’s time in Bourke and the back country. Did you know there are several poems he wrote for the local paper under a pseudonym? I even discovered one, most likely written by Lawson, that had not seen the light of day since it was published in 1893. Given that Orange has more of an affinity for the Banjo, did you know that on Trove you will also find digital copies of the original manuscript of the song Waltzing Matilda?

And for the real bush poetry buffs you can go back and read some classic poems as they were originally printed as Trove includes scanned copied of The Bulletin magazine.

My own niche interests tend towards historical military arts and I was amazed to discover newspaper accounts of swordsmen and swordswomen, fighting it out on horseback on Bondi Beach for the title of Champion of the World!

Once you’re done with that, Trove has a further 1,500 digitised newspaper titles to explore — all fully searchable and as easy as typing something

But for the family historian Trove is truly priceless. While official records like births, death and marriages can give you dates and family

connections, the newspaper archive of Trove is where you will find a little colour. Knowing that my great grandfather worked as a private inquiry agent in Sydney in the interwar period, I decided to see if he appeared in any newspaper accounts. Boy, was I surprised! I found hundreds of stories and photographs! As a professional witness in mostly divorce cases it seems he was rarely out of the news as the tabloids of the day lapped up the salacious (although by our standards, often quite tame) details.

Clues found researching Trove also led me to discover the identity of my late-grandmother’s birth mother. She had only discovered she was adopted in her 60s when any family who knew the story had passed on. And I am now Facebook friends with the grandson of my grandmother’s stepmother, who ran off to Africa in 1930 — a wild story, the details of which you can also find on Trove. Orange Art Society moves forward — JONATHAN ROE —

For more than 40 years the Orange Art Society Inc. has played an important role in the art community here in Orange.

It gives those with an interest in making art a platform for displaying and sale of their artworks, participating in workshops and group gatherings to paint in a variety of mediums. These groups are held at various times, during the day, some evenings and weekends in order to suit most schedules. The Orange Art Society has over 100 members and new members are always welcome. During our enforced hibernation, we have formed a think tank to come up with suggestions of how we are to move forward. And so, we have been talking with some wellknown Australian artists and our own members about conducting workshops and demonstrations

here in Orange. These will be open to the public, with first preference to active members.

The current exhibition will continue until 8th August and the works of guest artist Hank Spirek will continue until 11th July. Or next guest artist is Mirian Dawes, who will be exhibiting from 12th July, followed by guest artists Anne Ind and Colleen Benton, commencing 9th August. Amidst the middle of the Covid pandemic, PCYC Orange welcomed their new Club Manager, Jaime Wenban. With a passion to help others in life and fitness, Jaime admits PCYC has always been on her radar. “I love what they do as a not for profit. When the job come up I just went for it. I love how much PCYC can help youth and I didn’t realise the extent of the programs that we do run until now. Whilst we may never make their lives 100% better, we can make a difference in the short time we’ve got them here, which is really quite rewarding. As Manager, I really just want to extend on what we are already doing here. I’m excited that fitness classes will be expanding, with a vision to grow it quite significantly in the future, and to find new ways to support the vulnerable youth, finding ways to help them see a clearer path and help generational change to help these kids towards a brighter future.” Thanks to a grant from Newcrest Mining’s Cadia Valley Operations support, PCYC Orange will be able to run their Fit for Life program for the rest of the year, without having to worry about how they will pay for

the breakfasts each morning. The support from Newcrest is a massive help we are very grateful. This is a program to get kids active, to strengthen the partnership with police and to show that we are a safe environment for them to come to. Through physical fitness, nutrition and social engagement, ‘Fit For Life’ aims to improve their overall wellbeing.” Jaime added, “It’s good fun, I love it.” As the club now returns to ‘semi-normal’ Jaime admits it’s been a challenge. “We’ve been running limited gymnastics classes and fitness is back open. Recently we’ve been preparing for basketball and netball to begin their shortened seasons, with the comps starting from the 18-20th July. We are getting our courts ready and making sure our social distancing requirements will be followed.” The PCYC Orange team are now enjoying their school holiday program which includes PJ parties and mini Olympics!

You may remember John Payne from our magazine two years ago when he selfpublished his first book; Their Last Ride: The Fallen Jockeys of Australia. Rightfully so, ‘Their Last Ride’ has recently won the Bill Whittaker Book Award for 2020. This award is given biennially for the best new book on Australian horse racing. There were a total of 33 books published on horse racing in Australia/New Zealand in the two years of 2018 and 2019, with the criteria for the winning book is that it adds to the knowledge of the Australian racing history, it is well written and it is well produced. Bob Charley OA, former AJC Chairman and former Chairman Australia’s Racing Hall of Fame said, “Their Last Ride is splendidly researched. One of the most important featured of John’s prodigious research is that he was able to add so many fallen jockeys to the hitherto established list. John deserves the congratulations from both myself and the judging panel.” Their Last Ride is a monumental book of 630 pages that tells the story of every jockey that has

lost their life riding in a race, riding in barrier trials or riding track work in Australia. John has written a piece on each individual jockey, a true honour to their memory. There are 938 jockeys recorded in this book covering 1847 to 2017. John, an incredibly humble man, is a prolific researcher of horse racing and spent the last eight years compiling this book. “I spent a lot of time, nearly all day every day at the State and National libraries, they were like my second home. As an old geezer who has written his only book, I’m more than happy to see these jockeys in this book finally honoured and respected for what they did. This has never been done before and that amazes me. The purpose of the book is not to reflect grief or sorrow on the part of those who have given their lives to riding race-horses, but rather reflect on them as individuals and to honour them for their sacrifice. There are very few occupations

where an ambulance follows you about whilst you are working, highlighting the dangers of the profession.” The book has sparked the interest of many with Condobolin taking the reins in erecting a monument in honour. “This monument will have all of the fallen jockeys from my book (ones that fell in races) and they have asked me to come and be there for the opening,” said John. Following his President’s report, Terry Hinchcliff introduced the new incoming President Ian Davison who in turn introduced his Board for the

2020-21 Rotary year. One of the original charter members, Dr Bernie Huxtable spoke briefly about the 50 year history of the club and its achievements over that time. Athol Warman, who has only been part of the club for the last 17 months following his move from Mudgee was announced as the ‘Rotarian of the Year’ for his contribution as Foundation Director and his many hours of volunteer service. Twisted Sisters Toni Morrison from Gulgong and Cecily Walters from Parkes have returned to May Raechelle Art Gallery in Millthorpe to exhibit their fantastic felt wares from Thursday 2 July 2020. Not only scarves and hats, although there will be some gorgeous examples of those, but a fascinating display of vases, wall hangings and sculpture… all in felt! “We discovered working with wool fibre around 2009 after participating in a felting workshop which demonstrated the basic procedures.” “We incorporate other natural fibres with wool fibre, for example cotton, silk in various types, bamboo, mohair, alpaca and angora. We use natural as well as chemical dyes and dye our fibres to accommodate our creation at hand.” Truly deserving of the accolades they have received, Toni and Cecily are both award winning artists having a number of awards from Sydney and Canberra Royal Shows between them. They now exhibit in many galleries not just in the

Central West of NSW but throughout the country and their wares are very highly sought after. “We have loved textiles and other crafts for many years,” they say, “We started sewing our children’s clothes and our love of creativity grew so, we began to produce patchwork quilts then, we turned to mosaic. Still not satisfied we ventured into the world of wool felting, an ancient craft.” “We both have very different ideas which is a great asset to ourselves and our craft.” It’s obvious these gals love their feltwork, you can easily see it in the works they create. Colour, flare, design, they share a little of themselves in every piece they make. GET CREATIVE WITH TAKE HOME ACTIVITY PACKS FROM CENTRAL WEST LIBRARIES Looking to keep the kids active and creative this school holiday? Central West Libraries has got you covered with their take home Rock, Paper, City Craft and Activity Packs, which will get your kids building while dipping into history and heritage. The Rock, Paper, City - cardboard City Project, will see children don their architect’s hats and design either their own house, or other buildings, vehicles and neighboured adornments for a cardboard version of Orange that will be put on display in Orange branch, and grow as the entries come in. There will be several levels of difficulty involved in the

construction of these buildings and structural pieces, so the activity will be suitable to a wide range of ages. The hope is to talk about the concept of a child’s identity within their community, and how we all have a special place in our town. It is also about encouraging kids to get creative, and let their imaginations run wild, with possible town improvements such as “make a unicorn stable, a slip n slide, or a giant jumping castle.” Some crafty goodness is included in the pack for building embellishments and decorations. Then there’s the Lego Challenge: Central West Iconic

Buildings. Wherever you live in the Central West, you will find iconic buildings both historic and modern. This challenge asks you to recreate a Central West iconic buildings in Lego. We’ve just put out the 6th edition of our new free local newspaper NEWSWATCH. Have you seen a copy yet? If so, what do you think? We’d honestly value your feedback to either david@oclife.com.au or bob @oclife.com.au For those who haven’t seen a copy yet, let me tell you a bit about NEWSWATCH, where we’re up to at this early stage, where we’re heading, and then encourage you to become a regular reader. If you’re already a regular reader, you too will find this information interesting. We started NEWSWATCH because the newspaper scene in regional areas like Orange was falling apart, and in our view, for all the wrong reasons. We passionately believe that newspapers still have a vital role to play in communities like Orange. We also believe that a respected local newspaper can play a vital role in building or progressing communities like Orange. We also believe that a local newspaper should always be in the hands of a ‘local’ who lives in and who’s heart is in the local area. We further believe that a local newspaper can and should always be available at no cost to locals and funded by advertising only.

So, NEWSWATCH launched in Orange 6 weeks ago, at a time when some of the major players were announcing they were pulling out of many regional areas across the Nation, Orange was not among them. Despite this, we felt it was a good time to launch. We believe the only way regional papers can possibly survive, is to find a way to provide their products at no charge to readers and to fund them through advertising, as we are doing. In our view, this is very doable if your product delivers what readers want. If you have the readers, you’ll get the advertisers and so the wheel will turn. We’ve taken the first step, we’ve launched, and although it’s a case of one step at a time, the signs are encouraging. We’ve already had to increase our print run from 5,000 to 5,500 and we’ve also increased our page numbers from 16 to 20 each issue. The next step is to win the respect and trust of readers so that they’ll want to keep picking

up a copy each week. We’ll do this as we get feedback and develop our content to meet or exceed reader expectation, again that is normal practice for building a successful business.
