Given the events of the last week or two, it’s hard to know what to say. Like so many, I too am trying to make sense of what’s happening and plan my way forward, but in many respects, I feel quite helpless and resigned to just having to ride out whatever is ahead. Good sense says to me that the best way forward for those who are not directly affected by uncontrollable circumstances, is to go about our lives in a normal manner. My biggest fear is that panic buying etc. will simply compound the situation, and that will make it that much harder for others to go about their lives in a more normal fashion. To my mind, there is absolutely no need for panic buying. If there was nothing being produced, that may be different, but that’s not the case. People are buying up and storing up, in an effort to solve a shortage problem that simply shouldn’t exist. The people trying to solve this perceived problem are actually the ones creating the current shortage problem. If I’m right, a lot of the panic buying will settle down over coming days, supermarket shelves will be re-stocked and then we’ll be hearing how supermarket turnover is down because a lot of people have cupboards full of groceries, and not shopping as normal. Without trying to make light of the health issues, the way people are responding with panic buying is quite silly and an over-reaction in many respects, and the silliness gets other people caught up in the frenzy and so it goes on. I’m hoping in time, that we’ll all look back and realise how unnecessary the panic buying that has occurred was. Enough doom and gloom for now, have a great week and enjoy this latest issue of OC Life. Go well everyone!

Due to perform ‘The A Team’ tour at the Orange Civic Theatre, we were lucky enough to catch up with Taylor Henderson, where we quizzed him on everything from his favourite memories within the industry to his pre-tour rituals. M: What first got you into music? T: My Dad, my Dad is an amazing singer

songwriter and I grew up just listening to him, even though music was all around the house I never thought it could be something I could actually take on as a career, it was kind of like this imaginary you only see people doing this on tv, it’s not going to happen to me, now seven years later I’ve been touring around the country, with a few no.1 singles.

M: If you could open a show for any Artist who would it be? T: “I’d love to open for Ed Sheeran to be

M. What’s your favourite Ed song?

T. Oh jeez, it changes every week, it really does, I’d say right now it would be ‘Thinking Out Loud.’ M. What are some of your pre-tour rituals? T: Okay so whenever I get to a hotel for a show, I do this whole jumping on the bed slow mo video, that’s one, the other is that I always, always have a freezing cold shower. Just to hype me up. This is like 15 minutes before the show, it’s kind of like an electric shock, it’s only cold and I’m under there for like a minute.

M: What’s the best advice you’ve been given? T: “I’ve been told, as soon as you give with expectation in return, you lose. Game over. When you give to someone, whether that’s through music or any aspect of my life, give because you want to. As soon as you want something from it, you’re going to be unsatisfied. Its shifted my life, I used to be a stubborn kid back in the day, I was a bit difficult to work with, I was 20 years old when I was thrown into all of this... I didn’t know what I was in for and I didn’t have a lot of stability throughout my life early on. I learnt that the hard way, you’ve got to be grateful and just enjoy your life and have fun with it.”

M: What do you love most about your career? T: I’d have to say the travel, I get to see

so many awesome and quirky places, and Orange is one of them!

Teaching the beauty of hand tools “There is a worldwide trend to dump the machinery, they take up too much space,” he says. “Machines are just totally invasive and the atmosphere is charged with both dust and noise, both of which don’t always go away when you switch off the machine. “But with hand tool work you don’t have the dust, you don’t need the mask like you do with machine or the eye protection. It’s not all noisy and upsetting the neighbours. This hand tool work you can do it from home and have satisfied neighbours.” Roger spent 50 years working as an architect. His long career included designing vinyl tile patterns on elevator floors in the 60s, through to ecclesiastical furniture, fixtures for abattoirs and dairy factories, the Queensland Parliament Cabinet table, designing and building multi-story buildings and serving as an expert witness in building disputes and coronial inquests. But since retiring nine years ago, he has taken up his long-held interest in woodworking with vigour and is keen to share his love of woodworking with hand tools.

“Ultimately, one can make anything that a machine could make,” says Roger Karrasch, treasurer of the Orange Woodworker’s Association and a passionate advocate for learning the use of hand tools. “There are so many benefits of woodworking,” says Roger, “It has been shown that sufferers of post-traumatic stress disorders, within minutes, seemed more apt to recover themselves. People who have various stress problems, say from military service, it is quite common for them to forget about their issues if they start doing physical hand tool work.” Each week, Roger teaches small groups of adults and children the basics of working

with hand tools. With just a small collection of tools and a little knowledge you can make anything, he says. “They learn how to hold the tools and the techniques and the skills, and how to make three basic joints — the mortice and tenon, the dovetail joint and the dado joint — you can do anything with those and if you want to make something round you have the spokeshave to do it,” he says. “With just ten tools, you can do anything —

anything a machine can do and that’s what we’re teaching.” Of course, not all members of the Orange Woodworkers Association limit themselves to working by hand. Their workshop in the old coach house of the historic “Ammerdown” homestead has an extensive range of wood machining equipment from milling through to fabrication and finishes. There is a solar kiln for curing timber. A large mill, multiple table saws, bandsaws, sanders and lathes of various sizes. “You want one of them, you’ll find it. We have a pretty good range of stuff,” says Roger. The Orange Woodworkers Association members are free to use the facilities for their own projects with just a small donation. “And a fee, which covers the insurance and that’s $40 a year and that gives you the opportunity to have a cup of tea — and tell a few lies as well!” Members meet from 9am to 3pm each Wednesday and from 9am to 12pm on the second and fourth Sundays of each month. Words of Wisdom with Melise Coleman This week I caught up with the lovely Nora Mclean. “I try to be kind to everybody; I like to share and I would rather give than receive.” Where were you born? Orange

If you could describe your life in one sentence what would it be? It was wonderful when I was young as I come off a Dairy Farm. What do you miss about the good-old days? My father was a Dairy Farmer and I loved it. I worked on it from the time I was five years old to 18 years old when I got married. I love being outdoors, I didn’t like housework and funnily enough I finished up being a house cleaner. *laughs* We never went out too much we just stayed on the farm, hand milking 30 cows. What was your naughtiest moment as a child? Getting up on the roof with my sister, we’d sit up there and wouldn’t get down, our eldest sister would try and get us down, but we didn’t! What took you a long time to learn? I still haven’t learnt it, it’s to spell! *laughs* I was ideal at arithmetic but spelling - forget about it! I didn’t like school. I went when I was 8 and finished when I was 14. I couldn’t learn and my father had no one to help him on the farm so I used to be his right-hand man! What is your favourite childhood

memory? Being on that roof with my sister, sitting up there like Jackie we were *laughs*, every time my Mother and Father went to town to get groceries. What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a mother and a wife. What was your first job? Other than the dairy I worked at Email for three years, then I finished up doing babysitting and house-cleaning. What did you get up to when you were young? We used to get a poddy calf and put a harness on it and put a go-kart behind it *laughs* how we didn’t get killed I’ll never know, we had to make our own fun… so that’s what we did. Who is the person who influenced your life the most? Why? A bloke I used to know, Cec Fitzgerald, he was the most wonderful man in the world. He was such a lovely man, he was kind and gentle. What is your favourite thing to do for fun now? Bingo... I love me bingo darling! I don’t care whether I win or whether I don’t, just to go down there and concentrate on the numbers, I love it so much…

Last week at Towac Park, more than 600 young local school students were given lessens that could truly be life-saving.

RYDA (Rotary Young Driver Awareness) is a nation-wide program targeting Year 11 students that looks to equip them with the tools and understanding they need to stay safe on our roads. “We touch on subject areas that they don’t cover when they are learning to drive, said Peter Byrne, local Rotarian and Day Manager for the RYDA Program. Students were split into groups for the one-day program, which was delivered in partnership with the not-for-profit Road Safety Education Limited. Sessions were run by Rotarian volunteers as well as police and other expert presenters.

“Two of the sessions today are run by police, another by a paramedic and another session is run by an crash victim who talks about the consequences of having an accident as a young person how it has impacted on their life,” said Peter. “It is full on for the day and it gets them to think about what their responsibilities are on the road and what to be aware of — things of that nature.” In a lesson valuable for drivers of any age, the students got to see firsthand how just a small increase in speed can have a great impact on stopping distance.

“We demonstrate a car coming at different speeds and just how long it takes to stop a vehicle at 80 kilometres per hour or 60 kilometres per hour and most of them are very surprised at how long the reaction time to stop at certain speeds is,” said Peter. “And it is particularly very relevant here on county roads, because the speed limit is much higher than in metropolitan areas and so it takes that much longer. “In NSW the highest number of road deaths and serious accidents involve people aged 17 to 24 and so we are just trying to keep that under control.”

— JONATHAN ROE — Seven-year-old martial artist Benjamin Howe has dominated his division at the Australian Martial Arts Championship held in Sydney earlier this month. Benji, who trains with Rolly Tandang’s Kamao Martial Arts at the East Orange Public School hall, travelled to Sydney for the competition on 8 March with teammates Sonny, Manny, and Tomi. The team brought home a number

of well-deserved trophies and medals, but it was Benji in particular who dominated in the 7 years and Under age bracket. Benji took out 1st place in Traditional Forms, 2nd in Sparring Points, 1st in Sparring Freestyle, 2nd in Sumo, and 1st in Sword Combat. Congratulations Benji and the Kamao Martial Arts team!

Your Country MP Your Voice FEDERAL MEMBER FOR CALARE CORONAVIRUS – ECONOMIC STIMULUS PACKAGE Last week, the Australian Government announced a $17.62 billion stimulus package which is focussed on minimising worker lay-offs and keeping local people in jobs by helping businesses stay afloat. There's been a need to find the balance between giving the economy a boost without sending us into a debt sprial. More support will be needed before we are through this. Below is a brief summary on how the package might help you. FOR SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZED BUSINESSES Instant asset write off: • The instant asset write off for businesses will be increased from $30,000 to $150,000. This allows assets to be written-off for taxation purposes in the year they are purchased instead of over several years, providing an immediate tax benefit. •

An additional 50% depreciation acceleration for businesses with a turnover of less than $500 million. CASH PAYMENTS •

One-off tax-free payments of $750 will be made for aged pensioners and social security recipients.

•

Payments will be made into existing accounts from 31st March, 2020.

LOCAL NEWS - FAIRBRIDGE CHILDRENS PARK OPENS The Fairbridge Children’s Park officially opened on Sunday on the Mitchell Highway near Molong. The park recognises all the children that passed through the Fairbridge Farm over the years. The children came to Australia as child migrants from Britain. Some knew the families they were leaving behind, some weren’t aware of them. The story of child migration to Australia is a story of good intentions that all too often had devastating consequences. It’s a story close to the heart of my family. My grandmother was one of the “Lost Children of the Empire” – sent from England as a young girl through the Barnardos organisation after her mother passed away after giving birth. Until the records were opened up in the 1980’s my grandmother had no idea of the large family she had back in England. She got to visit them before she passed away. Except to her small circle of “Barnardo Girls”, she never spoke of her experiences. I asked my Mum about this once. She said it wasn’t spoken about because my grandmother felt that there was a stigma. That somehow being sent away as a child migrant or her family’s past meant that there was something wrong with her. That she wasn’t good enough.

My grandmother was an amazing woman and we are of course immensely proud of the odds she overcame and all that she achieved in her long and productive life. But it highlights the deep impact child migration had on kids and the lies they were often told about their families. The Fairbridge children should be proud of all they have achieved and their contribution to our country. This park recognises their journey, their experiences (some positive, some shocking) and this significant contribution. The Federal Government is putting in $150,000 for the associated war memorial that commemorates the 90 Fairbridigians who served their county in the armed services.

y CORONAVIRUS - TRANSPARENCY NEEDED ON LOCAL CASES The coronavirus outbreak is obviously very concerning, but Australians have always been very resilient, and getting through tough times is something we’re used to doing. We’ll get through this as well, I can promise you that. The key is not to panic and calmly work through the local issues as they arise. Our health authorities can assist in keeping everyone calm by being open and transparent on local coronavirus cases. The three cases that came to light in Orange last week were confirmed on Tuesday, but the health authorities didn’t make this known until Friday after my office (and probably others as well) started seeking confirmation of rumours sweeping the city. I should point out that last week’s cases did not go through the Orange Health Service (hospital) and it was not up to the hospital to make a public statement on it. It was up to the NSW Government. Our health authorities are going to be greatly tested over the coming weeks and months and we need to support their efforts. I certainly do. Everyone’s doing their best but my friendly and constructive request of the NSW health authorities is that they help stop rumours and panic by providing open, transparent and timely information on local coronavirus cases. Please just give us the facts. We can handle it!

RFF We captured stage two as they participated in RFF ‘Release from Face to Face,’ students enjoyed some dancing, robot coding in particular, while others were in the library learning science activities including investigating shadows.

SOLA Stage three students were busy learning in their new, flexible Senior Outdoor Learning Area (SOLA). This area provides students the opportunity to work independently It is designed to have mainstream and support students integrated so they can access different learning skills.

GLENROI HEIGHTS PUBLIC SCHOOL Taking pride in delivering excellent educational outcomes in a warm and nurturing environment. Glenroi Public School is home to 236 students who each strive to reach their full potential. With mainstream and support classes from K- year 6. They have flexible learning across the school. Glenroi Public has recently offered a whole school sporting program and an opportunity for year six students to get involved and become leaders. Year six leadership teams are responsible for different aspects of the school eg. communication, school beautification and environmental team.

DANCE GROUP The Glenroi Heights Dance Group is called Garru (magpie) Gugaa (goanna). It is an inclusive program for Stage 2 and 3. The dance celebrates many language groups coming together and honours the elders. By popular demand this year Glenroi will have three dance groups. Junior groups are mentored by the senior group and will eventually perform in the community like the Garru Gugaa dance group.

A new playground has been recently installed, and a multipurpose court is on the way which will be ready for term two.

PaulTIERNEY UND JETZT IST ES STILL Yep, it’s been “Oh So Quiet” at the big sporting events this week, which made me think of a question I was asked recently. If your German is a bit rusty, the title of the column this week translates (generally) to “It’s Oh So Quiet”, which is a song originally released way back in 1948 by German singer Horst Winter. It was covered in French in 1949, and by an American lady in 1951. However most of us are familiar with the tune after Icelandic music legend Bjork did her awesome version back in 1995. Whilst plenty of big sporting events around the world have been cancelled or at least postponed over the past week, it was really creepy to watch International cricket, and major footy matches being played in totally empty stadiums. In the cricket match, it was both hilarious and sad at the same time to see one of the batsmen reach his well-deserved half-century, and he didn’t even know it. It took those in the changeroom a minute or two to realise, and then they gave him a clap. It was that silent, they didn’t even need the stump microphones to hear what was going on out in the middle, the TV viewers could hear every word spoken by the batsmen, the bowler, the fielders and the umpires. It was eerie. When they’re being interviewed after a match, it’s quite often that we’ll hear a rugby league player forget to mind his p’s and q’s on live TV and let an f-bomb slip out in the heat of the moment. This week, I think an extra word was needed in the ears of the players, letting them know that, as heroes to the 6 year olds out there, they needed to be on their extra best verbal behaviour whilst on the field, as the little kids watching at

home could hear everything, for every minute of the game, with nothing being drowned out by the noise of a rowdy crowd with a few beers under their belt. As chats over the holiday break became more and more random and tangential, my youngest asked me why the crowds at the tennis have to be quiet when someone is serving, and why the galleries at the golf are required to be silent as the golfer takes his swing or is putting. Never thought about it really, it’s just tradition I said. But then I got to thinking, imagine if the crowds could yell during the service action of the player they weren’t barracking for? Or if those in the gallery following from hole to hole were allowed to scream out just as a player were taking a putt? It would add a whole extra dimension to those games if you could sing out “lolly legs” just as the other guy was about to make his putt for a birdie. If you were a Rafa fan, would it be OK to yell and scream whilst Roger was serving, to try and put him off? Think back to 2015 when Johnathon Thurston was trying to kick that goal to steal the grand final from the Broncos … the opposition fans made more noise than a nuke as he was taking the shot. Fair game in that sport. It’s pretty weird watching cricket and footy with total silence as the accompaniment. But I guess that’s the way of the world for a little while longer. I wonder if the players think it’s better without the harassment of the opposition crowd? I’m betting they miss the aggravation; that it spurs them on. Imagine what Jason Day or Ash Barty would think if the noise was deafening as they served? They’d probably just get on with it as Aussies do, just like we are with everything at the moment.

Let’s Talk Money with Daniel McGregor

ALL ABOARD MY TIME MACHINE… Could you benefit from a $4,000 annual bonus? More about that later. Coronavirus is reaping havoc around the world! It’s a scary time to be alive, but this will pass and things will go back to normal. How long that takes, I can’t tell you. But things will go back to normal. We’ve seen crises time and time and again. When they arise, everyone panics in the short term, there are stockmarket crashes, everyone stops spending, property stops selling, things kind of grind to a halt because confidence is shot. Eventually things bottom out and confidence starts coming back. The crisis of the time has a name people remember but just how bad things were at the time is long forgotten and everything starts hitting record highs again. If you can overcome present-bias, you will be able to make the kinds of decisions that will lead to you waking up years from now reaping the rewards of the sensible decisions you make RIGHT NOW. Present-bias is the tendency to focus on the here and now at the expense of the longer term. It’s a classic miscalculation by many people when it comes to financial planning… put simply, they don’t have a plan for the future and are solely focussing on now. That can lead to disastrous decisions being made. For example, some Australians will be moving all their super to the ‘safety’ of cash based solely on the news headlines they are seeing at the moment, with no serious thought as to firstly, whether it’s sensible and secondly, what the long term consequences will be. When it comes to our money, it’s vital to stay the course, ignore the short-term noise, focus on the

things that you can control. We would benefit by not looking at our super balances and instead focusing on things we can control in our life like: • Having a system to manage spending and saving; • Smashing debt; • Investing in high quality investments for the long term; • Making the most of superannuation; • Reducing tax; • Managing exposure to risk; • Spending time doing the things we enjoy with the peace of mind that we have a plan in place I want you to escape the present just for a moment and hop aboard my time machine. We’re ditching 2020 for a few minutes and jumping ahead to 2030. Just for a moment, imagine the benefits in 2030 of having the above ducks lined up! But what if you don’t have a plan? Perhaps this is the time to make one. I’m fortunate that I can conduct my business either in person, or via video link. If you’re going to find yourself with a bit of down time over the next few weeks, perhaps we should be talking to formulate your strategy going forward. Just last week I helped a couple reduce the fees on their super by almost $4,000 a year ($3,974 to be exact) while at the same time, increasing their diversification (the ultimate risk management tool). So, jump aboard that time machine again and imagine the kind of difference an extra $4,000 a year could make over the next 10 years. This is a perfect example of taking control of the things we

can control. I completely understand that no matter how many times you hear these things I’m saying, it won’t make it any easier when going through times like these. But if you can spend a few moments in my time machine before you make any decisions, you’ll likely have a different perspective! If you can put the right money in the right investments for the right timeframes, you will be on the right path. Sounds basic, but it works. It means that at times like this, while still troubling to experience, only long-term money is in things like shares and property. If we fast forward to 2030, that strategy is the kind that will look very sensible even though it can feel scary right now. It can sound impossible to believe, in the face of current news headlines, but the biggest investment risk you face is not investing. That’s because the biggest long-term financial risk you face is inflation… that is, the ever-increasing cost of living. Having all your money just sitting in the bank (or under the bed!) will ensure your money goes backwards in its purchasing power over time. We’re all sitting back in amazement at the toilet paper panic buying and there will be some red faces in years to come. The same thing applies to money and investments. Those who lose their heads and panic are going to have some regrets down the track.

Do you have some spare time you can dedicate to creativity or just sharing a cuppa with those in a similar situation to you?

anowindra Creative Centre (CCC) at Orana House [Canowindra] does just that by providing a space for the community who are looking to make new friends, learn new skills and quite simply just having someone to talk to and be an open ear over a cuppa. Founded in 2015, it began with four locals who saw a need within the community. Founder, Deb Rutter explained, “Canowindra has some fantastic groups, there were just some needs that weren’t being met, and that’s where the craft, which started out as a wool or crochet group and has developed into whatever you want it to be. "What I found initially was people who have retired, who have been unwell or have been caring for someone. They just don’t know where to go, they need someone to talk to and mix with and just relax. Money is not what we are about.” Make no mistake this group is not only open to Canowindra locals, they already have members from Cudal, Blayney and Orange. Natika Millar has been with the group for two years now, “My daughter had just gone off to school and I was casually employed at the time,

after spending five years basically at home with my daughter I had little to no friends so I thought I would give this a go and I am so glad that I did. “I just love that you can come in, you might be feeling down, but by the time you leave you’re laughing and smiling, I look at a lot of the ladies like they are my grandparents as I’m the youngest in the group.” *laughs* The mission statement of the not for profit community group is to provide a safe, friendly environment where people are welcome to share in creative ideas and activities. Each Monday the group will work on craft that takes their interest and on Tuesday they gather for mosaic projects. Deb continued, “The activities are a good excuse to get out of home, we are all very conscious of mental health which is essential to everyone. Everybody helps each other, if they are struggling someone will help them and support them, you can’t ever get it wrong and if you do, there’s no worry our facilitators are on hand.” Other activities the group get involved with include; blacksmith projects, writers’ group and woodworking. The community-based facility is also trialling a

shop space at 44 Gaskill Street, Canowindra for three months with the hope to continue into the future. The shop's items are products made by CCC financial members with some special product lines thrown in as well. Open weekends and public holidays, along with special events. Deb explained, “The shop was only made possible thanks to Newcrest Mining and it represents a few things for us, it’s about an individual making things whether here or at home, it’s a way of having an outlet and it also boosts the persons’ morale to have those items there, it supports the community and we are always very inclusive. KEEP CALM AND WASH YOUR HANDS, ADVISE LOCAL LEADERS With the news that the first cases of COVID-19 (coronavirus) have been confirmed in the Central West, local leader say it is important that we stay calm and don’t panic “It was inevitable that this virus was going to reach our area at some point, and now that it has, we need to deal with it calmly and methodically,” said Member for Calare, Andrew Gee. “We need to be particularly conscious of those Australians in the high-risk groups being older Australians and those with immune system deficiencies, and the need to take extra care around our aged care facilities and hospitals.

“We can all help by washing and sanitising hands, not coughing into hands and practising good hygiene.” Orange City Council CEO David Waddell also repeated the message to stay calm, listen to expert advice, wash your hands regularly and practice good cough etiquette. “Orange is not Robinson Crusoe and like many other regional centres, we’re part of a global community. Orange is a close-knit, sensible community and I’m confident we’ll be able to work with each other to get through this crisis together,” Mr Waddell said. “Orange City Council will work in line with NSW Health and other national health agencies

to implement the evidence-based guidance these bodies are providing. These are the bodies with expertise in managing a situation like this and Council will take advice and follow directives from government agencies and health authorities. “It’s clear we’re going to be living with this situation for a while, and for that reason it’s important we manage these decisions thoughtfully and responsibly.” He said Orange City Council has introduced measures to make sure these hand washing and cough etiquette are being actively encouraged at facilities such as the Aquatic Centre and council childcare centres.

“The Council provides a range of essential services and we have plans to manage the process of continuing to provide those services in the months to come. In a situation like this, it can’t be business as usual, but we’ll be doing our level best to provide those services, and we’ll continue to monitor the situation.” While all council facilities are continuing to operate, if authorities respond to new evidence with new recommendations, Mr Waddell said they will respond promptly. “We’ve established clear lines of communication with regional health authorities so that all sides can stay in the loop in the coming months.”

How to get the BEST out of OUR COUNCILS

HOW MANY COUNCILLORS SHOULD EACH COUNCIL HAVE? Councils in NSW can have a minimum of 5 Councillors and a maximum of 15. This is in contrast to Councils in England and Wales that have many more Councillors. For example, the last council I worked at in England, North Lincolnshire, had a population of some 150,000 and had 62 Councillors, so around 2,400 people per Councillor. It now has 43 Councillors, so some 3,500 people per Councillor.

Local Government in England and Wales now operates with an Executive or Cabinet of Councillors who work with the senior management of the Council and make decisions that are then scrutinised by the remaining Councillors, representing the community, at Council meetings. In North Lincolnshire the cabinet consists of nine councillors from the biggest political group on the council. The leader of the council chairs it and appoints cabinet members. The public are welcome to attend cabinet meetings that take place throughout the year at 4pm. So, between them the 43 Councillors perform the functions of both being like a board of directors (cabinet) and representing the community (scrutiny members or backbenchers), whereas in NSW, Councillors are required to act as a board of directors, which is somewhat incompatible with them also representing the community. In NSW, not less than 12 months before the next ordinary election, the council must determine the number of its councillors for the following term of office. If the council proposes to change the number of councillors, it must, before determining the number, obtain approval for the change at a constitutional referendum. I assume that Orange City Council has decided to continue to have 12 councillors and therefore is not going to have a constitutional referendum at the next local government elections on 12th September 2020. So, if Council decides to reduce the number of Councillors in 2023, that will go to a referendum at

the 2024 local government elections and then will finally come to fruition in the 2028 elections. When I was Deputy General Manager at Manly, I made the case for the reduction of the number of Councillors (including the Mayor) from 12 to 9. This was voted on at a referendum at the 2008 elections, so the number of Councillors was reduced to 9 for the 2012 elections. At that time, I compared Manly with some 40,000 residents (3,333 people per Councillor) with the largest NSW Council, Blacktown with a population of 350,000 and 15 Councillors or 23,333 people per Councillor. The NSW Council with the largest population now is Canterbury-Bankstown with a population of 368,040 or 24,356 people per Councillor. It is now much easier to make comparisons between councils because of the new website: https://yourcouncil.nsw.gov.au/ Orange City Council has 12 Councillors, including the popularly elected Mayor, and a population of 41,468 or 3,456 people per Councillor. Orange is categorised by the Office of Local Government in Group 4 Regional Town/City which has 28 Councils for which the average population per Councillor is 3,965. The Local Government Remuneration Tribunal categorises Orange as Regional-Rural and there are 37 Councils in this category. I understand that an issue of concern during the debate on amalgamations was the population per Councillor. This does not take into consideration the size of the area a Council serves.

Capturing Nature (Opening March 27) Join the Orange Regional Gallery for the opening of ‘Capturing Nature: Early photography at the Australian Museum 18571893’. In Capturing Nature, we travel back to a time when photography was revolutionising science, art and society. These never-beforeseen images dating from 1857 to 1893 have been printed from the Australian Museum’s collection of glass plate negatives and are some of Australia’s earliest natural history photographs. A touring exhibition created by the Australian Museum. Exhibition runs until 19 July.

DRUNK AND FOLLOWING JESUS! It was a hot day and not far from home was a music festival. I was excited! I was on my way to my first concert in about 10 years. What was meant to be a fun filled, relaxing night of music ended with me consuming too much wine and hanging my head out of the car window vomiting the whole way home. In the morning the first thing I did was pray. I thanked God for all that he had done on the cross for me. I thanked God for his love and forgiveness, and I asked that he would change me to be wiser with my future decisions. Now the guilt I was feeling meant that I could have avoided church that day because of what people might think of me if they found out? I needed to hide my shame and failings, right? WRONG! I made a mistake but my identity is in the work of Christ on the cross and so off to church I went with my failures and all.

THUMBS UP from a Dubbo visitor. I had day surgery in Orange last Thursday, and really appreciated how the staff in theatres took care of me, especially the new grad RN Rosie, and Meg, who was working with in recovery. I am usually a shocker with names but being able to remember theirs is an indication of how well they looked after me. Thanks.

BIG THUMBS UP to Ben and his committee for organising the Mumbil Music Festival. The music was lovely, it was so well organised and there was great behaviour from the people. A great family outing. It was the first concert you’ve organised – let’s hope it’s not the last!

THUMBS UP to the Orange City Council Workers who painstakingly repaired two broken pipes in Margaret Street on Wednesday evening (4 Aug) after the water burst through the road. They stayed on site until approx. 12.00 midnight working in the wind and rain. Continuing in the early hours of the following morning with repair of the pipes. Good work! Well done! Much appreciated! THUMBS UP to the young fellow at the Top of the Town Car Wash. The machine broke down midway through my car wash and he got me to park on the side and gave a full chamois wipe over - about three or four different things went wrong whilst I was there and he quickly met the customer’s needs with a smile and professionalism. When he had finished cleaning my car I also got some bonus car goodies

as an apology for the delay and inconvenience. I don’t know his name but he was wearing a Bunnings sloppy joe. Great service which was appreciated.

THUMBS UP to James at Harvey Norman for all his help getting my new phone plan set up before close of business. He went above and beyond and stayed back to make sure everything was done that day so that I could take advantage of a special deal. Thanks again. THUMBS UP to the two gentlemen who helped me on Tuesday evening during the storm. Picking me up out of the gutter outside the Ex-Services Club. A gigantic thumbs up. It does not pay to be a pig-headed stubborn and independent old woman. Again, a huge thank you to you both.

THUMBS DOWN to a developing situation. Since the opening of the North Orange Shopping Centre and the massive influx of home developments and increase in residents, Hill Street/Lister Drive intersection has become very dangerous to cross. The speed limit is 50kms per/hr, but everyone does mainly 70kms. This is extremely unsafe as school children are picked up and dropped off on the intersection every school day. When will they fix this issue, when a child or adult is hit and killed? It is well overdue. Do we have to wait for an elderly resident or child to be hit and killed before action is taken? THUMBS UP to the dedicated and caring staff that work in the paediatric outpatient clinic at the hospital. The Doctors are all wonderful and knowledgeable. We have our own paediatrician we see but would be happy to see any of them if an emergency occurred. The girls in the office are all such an asset to the service as well.

THUMBS UP to the Orange Taxi Service for returning our umbrellas to our doorstep after we left them in the taxi last week. THUMBS DOWN to the people in Orange who have gone crazy stockpiling grocery items. As a single Mum it is a big enough struggle to manage, put on top of that food allergies and financial struggles, and you can only get what you need when you need it. But now, there is nothing. Be thoughtful to the rest of us who have to struggle and be sensible please!! THUMBS UP to the minute mart in the Summer Centre for kindly fixing my walking boot on the spot and not charging when I realised I had forgotten my wallet. Your kindness to an elderly person was very much appreciated. THUMBS UP to Orange City Council for at last putting crossing supervisors on the Coronation Drive crossing at Orange High School. Now it’s time to make it a 40k zone.
