Just 13 days until the Jolly fellow in the red suit does his thing. How goes the Christmas battle at your place? We’re hosting our family this year and it’s reminded me again of just how complicated Christmas can become if you let it. It’s meant to be a wonderful time for families, so we’ll be doing our best to keep the true spirit of Christmas alive and in perspective. Despite any modern challenges, I’m looking forward to it and I hope you are too.

Speaking of Christmas, we drew our Find Santa winners this week and 20 people will receive a delicious IGA ham for Christmas. Just another quick reminder that next week’s issue (19th) is our last for the year and our first for 2020 will come out on January 16th. Our office will close for a couple weeks during this time as well. Also, due to the holidays we won’t have a Competition page next week, so this issue is your last chance this year to get amongst the prizes. Good luck! For most of the year Orange is a pretty relaxed and cruisy place but during those last couple of weeks before Christmas, things can get pretty hectic and sometimes, it can bring out the worst in people. It’s a time where our tolerance and patience can get tested and if we’re not in control, we often take our frustration out on people who don’t deserve it. Let me encourage everyone to be mindful of the season and to make every effort to be kind and courteous to those around us, be they other drivers, shop assistants, work colleagues or loved ones. Let’s truly, all have a happy Christmas - before, during and after.

Tahlia Williams was 28, a single-mother to a four-year-old daughter and hating her job. After spending more than a decade in hospitality, she said it had begun to feel fake and Tahlia knew it wasn’t something she wanted to do anymore. other tradies see every day — a girl walking onto the jobsite.” But that is something Tahlia is keen to see change. “I want to see more women in trades,” says Tahlia Williams. “I’d really like to encourage other girls to take on a trade and not just think they have to go to uni or get a traineeship. If you think you can do it, just give it a go and don’t take no for an answer!” Tradework is still overwhelmingly a male dominated industry, but Tahlia believes a trade could be a great career option for many women. Unlike a degree, you get paid while you train, the hours are much better than hospitality (free weekends!) and you get skills that will give you a job for life. “Why not jump into a trade; at the end of four years you can even start your own business and earn good money and no HECS debt!” said Tahlia. “And not just girls, I’d encourage anybody into trade really, especially out here in the country; trades are

But the more girls that jump into it now, the more that will into the future!” Tahlia set up an Instagram account — @tahls¬_the_painter — to document her career change. Her story caught the attention of the UK-based Women in Trades magazine, who are featuring her in an upcoming issue. “I put a post up, which featured me and my daughter and it pretty much explained why I got into the trade. They said they were really inspired by my story about being older when I decided to change careers and they wanted to feature me in their magazine,” said Tahlia, who figured she should also try encourage future tradeswomen a little closer to home. “Especially now that it is the end of the year and kids are graduating high school… if it is something that you are passionate about and you really want to give it a go, just do it! If I can do it, you can too.”

So, taking a punt, she decided to picked up the phone and ask for her dream job. “I was in hospitality for 14 years. My Stepdad was a chef and my Mum was a restaurant manager and so I just figured hospitality was going to be my path in life, but it was not what I loved,” said Tahlia. “I love painting! I’m a creative, I couldn’t do the coffee thing forever and that’s why, at 28, I decided to go out a be a painter.” Tahlia was turned down five times before a local painter gave her a chance and took her on as a labourer. But this year, she was picked up by Robbo’s Painting and Decorating and officially started her apprenticeship. “I’m two years in now, but the first few months were hard because I had never been on a jobsite before. I didn’t even know how to use a gap gun or anything,” said Tahlia. “And being the only girl on the jobsite all the time has its challenges, I guess because it is such a rare thing it is not something

A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION Something really good is happening in Orange right now, but it will take time before most of our community realise it. It concerns Orange’s Community Radio Station FM 107.5. For many a long year this local radio station has been going along quietly, doing what it was set up to do, serve the community while being run by an enthusiastic team of volunteers, many being actual presenters on the station. Sadly, operating in the way it has for so long has meant that the station’s audience has always been very small and in many respects, a lot of locals have little knowledge of it or aren’t even aware of it. For me personally, I’ve hardly ever given it a thought and never listened to it.

HANK “I was born in Chicago 72 years ago and moved to Australia 33 or 34 years ago. I’ve, off and on, been a professional artist for the last 52 years — whenever I could afford to be a professional artist. I’ve lived in five different countries and exhibited in five different countries. There always seemed to be a good reason to move and never enough to stay in one place, but I think I’ll stay here. I enjoy Orange, I like the atmosphere of the place, it is more-or-less easy

to get around and the people have been friendly. I moved here to Orange about a year and a half ago, because I heard that Orange had a good art society and they were sympathetic to artists. Now that I’m retired, the goal is to just make enough money to buy my supplies and keep on producing work and exhibiting work. That’s one of the reasons why the prices of my artworks tend to be low, I don’t want to make piles of money

On a much brighter note, I’m now delighted to say that I listen to 107.5FM quite a lot and I find it rather refreshing, given my fussiness when it comes to listening to radio or watching tv.

SPIREK off it; that’s not my goal. My goal is for as many people as possible to own my work. I have a long history of doing birdrelated paintings and figurativerelated paintings — they are two things I tend to do the most, but I’m probably a better sculptor than I am a painter in many ways. It is a little bit hard to do when you’re moving all the time, but I am going back to sculpture now that I’m kind of settled.”

The reason for my change of heart is because the people who run the station decided a little while back that they had in their hands a resource with far more potential than they’d taken advantage of, and now wanted to raise the bar, so to speak. They appointed an experienced station manager to bring the station up to a standard where its listener base would increase significantly, and the station would become a far more valuable resource in and for the communities it serves. That’s all been happening over the last few months and a week or so back, the station officially relaunched itself with new branding, a new logo, a new format and a new

direction. The ultimate aim is to become a much loved and listened to voice within the communities that 107.5FM is heard in. When I heard this was happening, I got excited. Being a media person myself, I know only too well the opportunity that having a community radio license gives a community, I also know that many communities with such licenses don’t use them to their full advantage. The fact is, they are full radio licenses, albeit with some restrictions that govern the amount of advertising/sponsorship they can broadcast but nothing that prevents them from becoming a serious radio force if they have a mind to do so. It appears that 107.5FM is now on that track and for that reason Orange City Life is going to help them and back them as much as we can. Together, we have the chance to become the most favoured print and radio options for readers and listeners in the area. We have a great starting point with both being genuine locals and both having a genuine heart for growing and prospering our community. I’m looking very much forward to the association and to see what we can do together to make our audiences appreciate what we do, encourage people to love and support each other and our community more, and to feel good about more things generally. The process has started and I trust you’ll soon be far more aware of 107.5FM and what we’re both trying to do very soon. In the meantime, tune in to FM 107.5 and have a listen, it sounds good now but is getting even better on a variety of fronts as each week goes by.

RANDOM ROCKS OF

s es n kind It doesn’t take much to brighten someone’s day; it could be a kind word, a smile, or even a small rock.

Painted rock groups have sprung up all over the world and over the past year, Orange locals have been eagerly getting involved in craze of painting and hiding rocks for others to find. “I love random acts of kindness,” said Bec Jefferis, the woman behind the popular local Facebook group Orange Rocks. It was on a trip home to the UK in 2017 that Bec was introduced the painting rocks, joining her nephews and niece at a local workshop. “I had such fun painting the rocks with them, I thought I’d love to do this when I get home,” said Bec. “But I came home and had a little look and see if Orange had rock page and they didn’t. So, I thought how cool would it be if I started a rocks page and started putting rocks around Orange for people to find?” Over the 14 months Orange Rocks has been active, Bec has lost count of the number of

I take them out into the Botanical Gardens and all the parks… I even hide some at the Adventure playground early in the morning before the kids are in their playing,” said Bec. “A lot of mine disappear so I imagine that they’ve been kept, especially when they are pretty and the kids find them… Whether it’s adults or children that find them I hope it brings a smile to their face.” On the back of her rocks, Bec often directs people to post a photo of their find on the Orange Rocks Facebook page and then keep the rock or hide it for someone else to find. Finding a rock often leads to families getting involved in painting and hiding rocks of their own. It is a great family activity said Bec, who also finds painting rocks a mindful activity that helps her own mental health and sense

of wellbeing. “I really enjoy seeing them find my rocks and get involved because they think it is a good activity to get involved in, she said. This weekend Bec is encouraging people to take part in the state-wide NSW Rocks Christmas Rock Drop and will be painting rocks at Bissy’s Café. To take part, Bec only asks for a gold coin donation to cover the cost the rocks and paint. “NSW Rocks are encouraging everyone to do a massive rock drop on this one weekend and hopefully lots and lots of people find them and get involved,” said Bec. “I’m going to be at Bissy’s Cafe on Saturday morning from 9am until midday I will be painting my own rocks there and anyone can come along and join me, because I will have loads of prepared rocks so they can join in.” You can find the Orange Rocks group on Facebook.

SPINAL PATIENTS CAN HOPE FOR A

better future

The past few decades have seen some amazing advancement in medicine, allowing us to live longer and greatly improving the quality of life for many, many people.

eading Australian neuroscientist Professor Bryce Vissel believes we are on the verge of seeing similarly life-changing improvements for people with spinal injuries as well as degenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Professor Vissel, who heads the UTS Centre for Neuroscience & Regenerative Medicine, visited Orange last week at the invitation of local doctor Steve Peterson, who was left in a wheelchair after being struck by a car on his way to work at Orange Hospital. He met Professor Vissel while recovering in Sydney and has become an advocate for the potentially life-changing and life-saving research being pursued at the Centre. “We want to cure spinal cord injury and other related diseases,” said Professor Vissel. “The goal of what we do is to deliver a cure and through that create history. I’m not saying we will achieve it, but if you don’t aim for it, you’ll never achieve it and we’re unashamedly working towards that goal.”

Professor Vissel’s research is built on the work of UCLA Professor Reggie Edgerton, who has demonstrated some recovery in patients with spinal cord injury by using epidural stimulation. “We’re interested in what’s called neuroplasticity; the idea that the nervous system can modify itself in response to experience or injury or damage,” said Professor Vissel. “We know after a stroke people start to show some recovery because the brain is able to reorganize itself, create new circuits, new connections and other parts of the brain can take over parts that have been lost. We believe, in the case of spinal injury we can also harness that same capacity to bring about some recovery.” The process works by applying electrical impulses to the spinal cord below the injury. “Once you apply the neuromodulation, it elevates the spinal cords capacity to hear the very faint signals from the brain and then the brain can initiate movement and

the spinal cord will do what it needs to do,” said Professor Vissel, who is careful to stress that there is still much to learn about the treatment. “We don’t know who it is going to work in and to what extent, exactly where we need to apply the stimulator to get the best effects on different functions, we don’t know the best the best stimulation protocol we need to use and so on. So there is a lot of science to be done,” he said. Some of Professor Edgerton’s patients were able to regain the ability to use their hands, which can greatly improve a person’s independence “For people like Steve, it would be amazing to get some hand function back!” said Professor Vissel. “They are getting people who couldn’t previously lift up a glass, take a glass and give themselves a drink. Some people can get a credit card out of a wallet —these are the sort of things that are life changing! Some recovery like that can be amazing and

we don’t know yet how much we can do with rehabilitation on top of that and how we can develop the technology.” Professor Vissel is also passionate about the treatment’s potential to improve things like chest function, bladder and bowel control and temperature regulation. “I’ve seen people get a cold and die because they can’t cough and they end up literally drowning in their phlegm,” he said. “For me it is an absolute urgency that we achieve what we are aiming to achieve, and we get this done.” Professor Vissel believes that a similar approach could also see improvement in people with Parkinson’s, Alzheimers and dementia. “It is not going to be easy, and it is not a case of a miraculous cure tomorrow. It is a lot of work to do, but we do know where the technology is today and it is no longer about ‘if’, there is enough evidence there now to know that this is real, there is real promise of some benefit.”

It’s time to put pen to paper in preparation for the 2020 Banjo Paterson Australia Poetry Competition.

The 2020 Banjo Paterson Australia Poetry Festival runs from 16-23 February 2020, but entries for the poetry competition must be in by Wednesday 12 February. Festival committee member and poetry competition organiser Len Banks said now is the time to get your entries ready. “What I’d really like to do is get people over the Christmas break to put their thinking caps on and start write some poems,” said Len. “We already have a few entries starting to come in now, but I’d really like to encourage locals to do it — especially the school categories. I want get people to start thinking about writing something.” The Banjo Paterson Australia Poetry Competition is a recital competition. All entries must original works and should generally be

rhyming verse. The poems are to be performed in person at the competition on Saturday 22 February. “It might be traditional bush verse in terms of its rhyme and rhythm, but not as much in content,” said Len. “It could be very modern… Banjo Patterson wrote about his life and times and what he experienced around the traps and that’s what we’d like people to do now is to write about their own experiences.” There are various categories from Open to Novices, high school and primary school student. “We also have this year a school principals’ section. The last few years we’ve had a mayoral Challenge, this year we’ve decided to go with school principals, so it will be interesting to see what sort of response we get.” The week-long festival program kicks off on

16 February with a poet’s brunch at Yeoval’s ‘Banjo Paterson… more than poet’ museum and ends with a family market day at the Emmaville Cottage. Other highlights include the Night Market, Banjo Poetry Brawl, and Festival Dinner in Molong. “Our feature poet this year is Carol Heuchan from the Hunter Valley. She’ll be here for the duration of the festival and she’ll perform at all the public events and be one of the judges for the poetry competition,” said Len. “We also have Greg North coming from the Blue Mountains; he’s a well-known poet as well. reaches milestone with $25,000 grant to

ORANGE’S RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE

ewcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation is celebrating having provided a total of $20.6 million to enable 472 community projects for disadvantaged marginalised and isolated communities in regional New South Wales. The $20 plus million milestone was reached last week with the announcement of 12 new grants, totalling more than $700,000. Among the recipients was Ronald McDonald’s House in Orange, who were given $25,000 to purchase a vehicle to provide transport for families staying at the House while they have a child in hospital. Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation Chair, Phil Neat said this latest round of grants recognised charitable partners which are

The Lockwood family have been part of the Orange Farmers Market, and the local agricultural industry for a long time after Grant and Vicki Lockwood purchased what is now the Beekeepers Inn building in 2003.

“The most incredible salamis!! Yesterday at Orange Farmers Markets we tried (and bought two) of the duck salami - it’s amazing!! I know ...duck! who’d have thought! Shaun’s wild boar is a fave as well.

Now, Vicki and her son Mark (both pictured), along with the rest of the Lockwood family continue Grant’s hard work with honey, beer, and hospitality all part of the offering.

“I learned something new yesterday - that the salamis can last six months once opened if stored in fridge in a paper bag - it will continue to age and mature in flavour. Not that I think it will last six months, but that was interesting to learn!

In 2012 a modern factory was built to extract and bottle honey, some of which makes it to the Orange Farmers Market each month. The addition of 1859 Brewery was Mark’s passion. “At 1859 Brewing Co our core focus is to brew the best handcrafted beers,” Mark says. “By working on smaller batches we are able to care for each beer from the grain, all the way through, to bottling. All of the beer is brewed on site at the Beekeepers Inn.”

METHOD...

12 x cooked prawns (already shelled & deveined)

Cook the noodles in boiling water for 5 minutes then drain and rinse with cold water

200g dried vermicelli noodles

Place cooked prawns in a bowl or pot, cover with boiling water for 2 minutes then drain, cut in half.

Fill larger bowl with cold water, dip the rice paper wrappers into the water for 1 second then take out

How do you explain Australian ‘traditions’? I’ve got my work cut out, I think. Less than two weeks to go until my fave day of the year hits again. I’m pumped. Paul Kelly and Australian Crawl are already on high rotation as the Christmas playlist gets a workout. Far too many pre-Christmas celebrations have already occurred, through work functions, farewells, summer festivities and a couple of extra ‘why not?’ nights. Ugh. Too hard, too early – how will we keep this pace up? In our minds, the frantic thoughts have well and truly turned to the planning for the four days of Christmas. This year, our extended families are sharing quality time with all the Rellies plus a few ring-ins. Numbers will nudge 30 – never a dull moment. All hands on deck, on of the biggest Chrissie celebrations ever… this festive experience will be one to remember, I’m sure. Christmas morning is sure to see the regular breakout of champagne with ham and cheese croissants, with Uncle Dave always cracking a beer at that early hour, too. The Christmas ‘humour’ is on from daybreak, so make sure you’ve got your thick skin on as nobody will be safe. I wonder if anyone will bother to get dressed for present opening? Or if they’ll just go thongs and PJ’s again amongst family. The late morning nibblies will feature a healthy dose of prawns, which is the highlight of the day for Poppy. We’ll also do the sizzling kangaroo chunks with caramelised onion and the chorizo’s with Jarlsberg – the little kids are addicted to all that. I’m sure most of the crowd will be checking their watch every few minutes to see if 11 o’clock is close enough to ‘beer O’clock.’ Maybe earlier. Don’t peak too early, it’s a long day ahead. It won’t matter that it’s gonna be hot, total fire ban, barely a drop of water around and not a green blade of grass

to be seen – there’ll still be a roast for lunch. Getting things right in the oven with a champagne glass in hand is always a challenge, but everyone’s quite forgiving on Dec 25th if things go awry. I’m a veges man rather than a salad man myself, and the recent addition of (burnt) Brussel sprouts with bacon and pine nuts as a side dish to our roasts just takes things to another level. Hope the Rellies like it. All the trestle tables get joined together, there’s no such thing as a ‘kids table’ for us. And if you don’t put your paper hat on from the cracker, you’ll deservedly get ridiculed all through lunch. The dishwasher doesn’t cope when there’s 30 people eating, so again it’ll be all hands on deck for the cleanup. Whilst the kids will be begging for Christmas cricket, our big tradition has always been whacking a golf ball. Past the shed, around the back post, between the silver birches, over the tank and hit the bird bath. Par 6. Lose a shot if you need a drop. The pav, trifle and cheesecake can’t be consumed until a golfing winner is declared, but seconds and thirds are allowed, because dessert goes in a separate stomach on Christmas. Baby number 2 (now 21) is flying in from The States, and bringing a beau. What a baptism of fire for him. I wonder what he’ll think of all the carcasses of our national symbol on the edges of the highway, let alone our crazy Aussie ways? I guess we’ll have to explain that if people bother to take the time to take the mickey out of him, then that means he’s been accepted. As Steve Irwin would say, "Crikey, Aussie Christmas, what a ripper."

Over the past couple of weeks, students from Catherine McAuley Catholic Primary School have been gathering items for their annual St Vincent De Paul’s Christmas hamper appeal.

This cause has been well-supported by the school community with hundreds of non-perishable items being donated. Mini Vinnies leader at Catherine McAuley, 12-yearold Freya Bryant described ‘Mini Vinnies’ as a small fundraising group represented by Year 6 leaders. “We organise fundraisers. We’ve had a couple this year, such as a movie event, and others like cake and pancakes stalls to raise money, and also paying visits to our local St Francis Aged Care, where we put on talent shows for the elderly, it is really quite enjoyable. I like helping people, it makes me feel really good when I do.” The hampers will be distributed to our less fortunate

in the Orange community, with this year’s hampers also including cinema tickets, which we think is a great little addition! “We managed to get a lot of hampers this year which we are very proud of. This year hampers will also be distributed to people who have been affected by the drought, so they can have a nice Christmas feast with their family,” said Freya. “We want those who are struggling to just keep hope, know there are people thinking of them and trying to help out where they can.” Well done Catherine McAuley, hopefully there will be many more people who experience a Merry Christmas because of your selfless-ness.

Mini Vinnies empowers our primary school students to become advocates within their school and local community by putting their values into action. It is about doing good in the community that benefit people facing social injustice. It is also about young people meeting to talk, share ideas and concerns, to have fun and support each other.

Considered a prestigious award amongst schools. Year six St Marys Primary student, Millie Banks has recently taken home a share in the ‘Archbishop’s Choice Award for 2019’ after entering in ‘The Christmas Story Art Exhibition and Competition.’

Millie explained, “In June, everyone came up with their own idea to draw artwork based on a select Bible passage, only a few people got picked to continue their artwork with Mr Quick and I was one of them. My artwork went through several rounds of competition in the Region and eventually made it through to Sydney which I was quite proud of.”

“When it got to Sydney, I was notified that I would be getting an award, though I was very surprised, I wasn’t expecting such a big one. It was the best one of all, my family on my Dad’s side is quite artistic, so I think I got that talent from them,” Millie smiled. This year, the judges specifically looked for artwork that included authentic imagery, they just couldn’t separate Millie’s artwork with another students, with them both sharing the award and taking home the title. Millie continued, “My artwork was inspired by ‘The Journey to Bethlehem’. This specific journey reminded me of my Pop who became very ill earlier in the year. My Pop had an extremely tough time trying to fight cancer until

he went to join God in heaven. This art helps me to reflect on my life as no matter what life throws at you, you must persist and keep believing. “I’d like to thank Mr Quick for his help and my parents for supporting me, as well as Mr Corbin and my Teachers. I’m proud that I actually got an award and how far I went with it. It now stays as its apart of the exhibition for a few weeks. Along with Millie’s one of a kind trophy, she won herself some art supplies including paint brushes, paint, stationary and a book, to which she has assured me she has already started using. Congratulations Millie!

Kingfisher School Gear Celebrates 25 years — JONATHAN ROE —

It has been 25 years since Kingfisher School Gear first began outfitting local school children, but one thing has not changed and that’s their commitment to quality. “Our main aim has always been to produce high quality, Australian-made products that look and feel good on the kids,” said Laurelle Honeysett, who runs Kingfisher School Gear alongside her husband Stephen. Laurelle has always loved sewing. She began making her own clothes at age 12 and even made her own wedding dress. She first began making school uniforms to help out a friend, but it quickly grew into a full-time business. “Other schools started to ask if we could do theirs and it just progressed,” said Laurelle. “We realised pretty quickly it was going to be a much bigger opportunity than I could do at home, so we rented a premises.” Ever since, Laurelle has overseen the local manufacturing of uniforms in the factory at the rear of their retail business. “It is a lot of work and it keeps us very busy,” said Laurelle. “We’ve taken on various different forms over the years; we used to outsource so people would pick up the work and take it back home, then we started employing staff on the premises, putting people through

traineeships and that sort of thing. Now we are down to a couple of part-time staff and we work really hard!” The uniform patterns are all Laurelle’s own designs and she is conscious of making well-fitting clothes with fabric that lasts. “Some uniforms are pretty ordinary fit-wise. We have tailored them over the years and ours are a little bit slimmer and are a little bit more fitted. If I see something that’s wrong, I just adjust it as we go,” said Laurelle. “School uniforms are worn for a very long time. They have to be strong and durable. They need to be good quality and the stitching needs to be good — so that’s why we continue to make them here. It’s hard work competing with what’s made overseas, but that was our vision when we started and I’ve stuck with it.” Uniforms from Kingfisher School Gear are competitively priced and, with the exception of shoes, you will find everything you need to equip your child for the school year in store. “We try to maintain good, competitive prices. ORANGE ROADS RECEIVE MORE FUNDING

Local road maintenance in the Orange City Council area will receive a $449,800 boost thanks to funding under the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery Program. The funding was part of the latest round announced last week, which will deliver over $139.6 million to 310 local government authorities nationwide for safer and better-maintained roads. The Roads to Recovery funding in Orange will allow council to progress two of high-priority projects, using local knowledge to deliver the best local roads. Roads to Recovery projects which have been identified under the latest round of funding include the following: FOREST ROAD, ORANGE A 1.06km stretch towards Huntley Road EDWARD STREET From Churchill Avenue to McNeilly Avenue We are committed to getting Australians home sooner and safer, no matter where they live. The Roads to Recovery Program will deliver safer roads in local government areas throughout the country, through the latest round of this vital infrastructure program.

SUPPORTING OUR LOCAL COMMUNITIES The current drought, and its impact on farmers and local communities, continues to be the government’s number one priority. As I have told the parliament many times, as the drought steps up, so too does the need for Government’s response. The focus on current drought support programs is to provide immediate help directly to people experiencing hardship. The government is also committed to funding local solutions to community needs through initiatives like the Drought Communities Program. Importantly, drought measures are also being rolled out which invest in long-term resilience measures and infrastructure development like Wyangala Dam. The latest announcement includes another $709 million in support, bringing the Australian Government’s total commitment to over $8 billion. This is a breakdown of how the Federal Government and the States are supporting our drought-affected farmers: The Federal Government is providing up to $224,000 a year in support per farmer a year NSW gives more than any other state at the moment with up to $69,175 per farmer a year

LOCAL CEREMONIAL CADET PARADE

On the other hand WA provides no direct drought support In Queensland a farmer can access $39,129 in direct support, in Victoria $25,235. South Australia is reviewing its level of support but currently provides no direct drought support From a federal perspective, this funding in included in the following programs: $128m to extend the Drought Communities Program to drought-affected councils $10m to keep kids in school and $5m for childcare Drought loans up to $2m with no repayments or interest for the first two years A new no-interest Small Business Drought Loan up to $500,000 with the same conditions Farm House Allowance of over $1000/fortnight for couples for four years in every 10 $200 million extra for the Building Better Regions Fund

This week Put Orange First member businesses met with the NSW Legislative Assembly Committee investigating drought affected communities, and will make a submission to the investigation. ‘Other projects in the Put Orange First strategic plan include having a CBD Place Manager to work with businesses and Council to encourage events to bring more customers here, and CBD improvements that contribute to a thriving CBD. Put Orange First also aims to bring all the stakeholders in Orange together to have transparency over the costs of doing business here and to ensure we’re going in the same direction. We will be making a submission for next year’s Council budget as we did for 2019/20.

Richard also spoke, thanking Jim Maxwell and Gus Worland for making the Long Lunch such a great event. He also thanked Edwena Mitchell for catering and Angullong for providing wine. Gus Worland is one of the hosts of the Triple M Sydney breakfast radio show The Grill Team and a well known reality TV series host. Gus talked about the charity Gotcha 4 Life including telling a personal story of a friend who seemed to have a very successful life and committed suicide. Stephen Smith accompanied Gus on many visits to school during his recent suspension from playing cricket to talk about how to be a ‘tomorrow man’ or ‘tomorrow woman’. Jim Maxwell regaled the audience with funny stories from his early days as a cricket commentator for ABC radio through to more recent times. He then answered many questions from the audience and said that it is a privilege to be a broadcaster. for a map of businesses/premises subject to special business rates. The Local Government Act requires that during the period of public exhibition of the annual operational plan, the council must have for inspection at its office (and at such other places as it may determine) a map that shows those parts of its area to which each category and sub-category of the ordinary rate and each special rate included in the draft operational plan applies. It would also be helpful if those maps were easily accessible on the Council’s website permanently. The comparisons of Senior Staff remuneration are interesting. I see that Orange City Council has advertised the position of Director of Development, but not Director Corporate and Commercial. I would have expected the Council and the new Chief Executive Officer to review the organisational structure when there are two Director positions vacant. The senior staff remuneration costs are published in the annual reports. The reason I have used Fairfield City Council in Western Sydney for comparison is that I know it well as I was one of the 2 Directors and know how it works. I recall that one of the big issues in discussions about the proposed amalgamations in the Central West was the expected reduction in the cost of senior staff. Clearly, reducing from 2 or 3 General Managers to one is a cost saving. All works are for sale at reasonable prices and would make the perfect gift that special someone. Located in the Woolworths car park, everyone is welcome to come in and have a look. If the door is open and the flag is out, the gallery will be open. The Orange Art Society is also home to many different groups of artists, who will be at work on most days of the week.

Thinking about getting into art? Or wanting to hone your skills? The Art Society has four tutors who conduct regular workshops. Details of how to take part can be obtained by visiting the art rooms. There is no cost to be a member of the Art Society. And members regularly meet up to paint for pleasure or to support and learn from each other. There is also the opportunity to join in weekend workshops with well-known guest artists. The current exhibiiont will run for two month and be followed by an exhibition of paintings by Hank Spirek.

The historic village of Millthorpe’s comes alive this Saturday for the annual end-of-year street festival — Millfest! Held in the village centre from 2pm to 7.30pm, Millfest brings you a mix of live music, shopping, kid’s entertainment and plenty of local wine, beer and food. This year’s entertainment line-up includes: Gabbi Bolt, Smith and Jones, Amy Viola, the Hip Replacements, The Amazing Woolloomooloosers, Millthorpe Public School, and Millthorpe Dance. There will also be over 58 gift, food and drink stalls for you to peruse, plus all the stores on Pym Street will be open for that last minute Christmas shopping. And, of course, Santa will drop by to hand out lollies to the kids. Entry to Millfest this year will be by ticket: Adult $5, but children under 18 years free. Where and when were you born? I was born at Bigga, in 1940. What are the most important lessons you’ve learned in life? Just to be fair to people, treat everyone with love and kindness.

What took you a long time to learn? My Grandfather died when I was 11 and I had to learn to milk cows, that took me a while. It was a small dairy that provided the village with milk. I was there until I was 23 years old. What is your favourite childhood memory? I think it would be my Grandfather waiting for my Grandmother to go to the cows for the evening to milk. He would say to me ‘Quick Grandma’s gone, I’ll set up the sewing machine for you.’ *laughs* So he would set it up for me, she didn’t want me to touch the machine to change the tension on it, so he put it up and he would watch out the window for her to be coming back, then he would say, ‘Quick pack it back up Grandmas coming!’ *laughs* She never caught us, we were too good for her.

What was your first job? I never really had a first job, I worked on the property and I would teach a needlework class at school for a few years. What are you most proud of? My family, they all want to get ahead and do well in life. What did you get up to when you were young? I loved and played a lot of tennis, I was most successful exhibitor for eight years at the Flower Show in Bigga, the church held it every year. I always enjoyed sewing and cooking, I loved making sponge cakes for all of the kid’s birthdays. Who is the person who influenced your life the most? Why? I think my Father, he was an honest and trustworthy man and I really looked up to him. What is your favourite thing to do for fun now? I like to listen to music, and I enjoy watching live music, I also love to read.

What life advice would you pass along to your grandchildren? To be truthful and treat people fairly.

YABBYING A favourite leisure activity of children in Orange in the 1950s was yabbying. These youngsters – Yvonne Ridley and her neighbour Bruce Crowhurst and visitor from Kyogle Terry Scanlon – tried their luck at the creek at National Park during the school holidays in January 1956. The method – attaching a piece of meat to a line and waiting for a bite – was simplicity itself, and the reward was a very tasty meal. Because contained within is a gold mine of practical advice that despite being several thousand years old is just as true today as it was when it was written. It’s more than just a collection of random snippets of good advice though as many recurrent themes can be found throughout it. One such theme the writer of Proverbs urges us to find is wisdom. It says wisdom is the most valuable thing we can aspire to find: “Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.” Great so how do we do that? Do we read some books? Enrol in an online course maybe? Luckily Proverbs also tells us where to start: “The fear of the Lord, is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Proverbs tells us that knowing God and having a right attitude toward Him is the beginning of real wisdom. Handily Proverbs, just like the rest of the bible, is a great place to look to learn who God is and what He is like.

A BIG THUMBS DOWN to a young woman driving a Corolla Ascent on Thursday the 28th at the Big W carpark at 2.45 pm, she is trying to run into the parking space near the escalator entrance and nearly run me over on my mobility scooter, slamming her car door nearly into my car and just taking off without even turning around. Shame on you to be so inconsiderate and just caring about yourself. In the future look around where you are going, or you surely will cause a major accident.

THUMBS DOWN to visitors of the Blayney Community Centre on Friday 29th November, whose ability to street-park is the worst I’ve ever seen; some even parking in front of driveways. THUMBS UP to the wonderful catering and bar staff at Waratah’s Sports Club on the occasion of my daughter’s birthday party recently. A special thank you to Matt who saw it that we were looked after extremely well. The city of Orange are very fortunate to have this wonderful facility on their doorstep. THUMBS DOWN to the Coles trolley bays in the carparks. Early morning shoppers cannot take their trolleys back to the carpark bays and receive their coin instead of having to take trolleys back to the store. Please consider less mobile people. THUMBS UP to Cincotta Chemist. The staff there are just wonderful. They are always so kind and helpful. They are truly and asset to the town of Orange.

Surely, we as a prosperous city and soon to hold A Day on the Green on that stretch of road can have a better sign. The top section of it has fallen off! Update and refresh! THUMBS UP to The Ophir Hotel, its Publican and Licensee. We had an 80th birthday party there and they were very professional and courteous and very well organised, the food was also delicious!

THUMBS UP to the young lady at the Ex-services club ham raffles Thursday night. Picking up the money the gentleman dropped on his way to the bathroom and returning it to him when he came back. He had no idea he’d dropped it. Well done.

EDITOR: We also received a couple of Thumbs down about Council’s $4m Arts grant and one about parking issues at the Millthorpe Markets. We didn’t publish these as there are clearly valid reasons for the Council’s action on the grant and we’re sure the folk who run Millthorpe Markets are constantly looking at ways of improving things.
