You can feel the build up to Christmas around Orange at the moment with a lot more people down town and looking for a parking space becoming quite difficult. I’m certainly not knocking it, it’s great for business and it’s great for the Orange economy and the more the merrier I say.

I personally slipped up with one of our Thumbs Down last week and you can read how I went wrong in our Thumbs section this week. Being fair with Thumbs down comments is always challenging but on this occasion, I let the team down and I’m sorry.

Disney fun at OPS...

On a brighter note, we drew the winner of our 2 night package staying at the Citadines Connect in Sydney last Monday morning at Collins Booksellers. The lucky winner was Ann Murray, congratulations! And more brighter news, we’ll be drawing the winners in our Find Santa competition in a week or so and twenty people are going to win a fabulous ham for Christmas from Ashcroft’s Supa IGA. We love giving stuff away! Those following my columns about the man who thinks he may have a solution for some of our water woes should read my comment in this issue. There’s been progress and hopefully something good will come out of what we’ve tried to do. I also attended the re-launch of our local radio station 107.5FM at Orange Central Square last Saturday morning and I’d have to say I’m pretty impressed with the new direction the team there are taking. Having a radio station in a community like Orange is both a privilege and a responsibility, done right so much good can be achieved and it appears the team at 107.5FM have recognised that and now have a mind to be the “Heart of our Community” in radio land. Nice thought eh? It’s early notice but just be aware Orange City Life will take our usual Christmas break for 3 weeks again this year. Our last issue for 2019 will come out on December 19 and our first issue for 2020 will come out January 16. Happy reading everyone and go well!

Spread the Christmas Cheer — MELISE COLEMAN —

Residents at Uniting Wontama were given the gift of festive cheer early, as house captains from Kinross Wolaroi School delivered each resident a personalised Christmas present last week.

e were told it’s a favourite amongst many residents as they wait intently for the day and speak highly of it throughout the year. The annual affair was an initiative which began four years ago, Uniting Wontama Leisure & Wellness Coordinator Sandra Brown explained, “It was Kinross who approached us and told us what they wanted to do and Uniting was right on board with it. Each year we prepare brief descriptions of each resident’s interests which is then shared with the school. Kinross seniors then conduct a fundraising effort which results in finding the perfect gift for each Uniting Wontama resident as well as a personalised card.” Each year the gifts and cards are shared with the residents who then also share stories and make connections with the students. Doing so

helps promote intergenerational connection which can give aged care residents a sense of belonging and purpose and students a renewed outlook. Sandra continued, “The residents really enjoy their company and there are some beautiful conversations that emerge about their own grandparents and the joy in doing things for others, It’s just beautiful to see. I don’t know if the kids really know what they do for the residents, it really brightens their day, students come in and they see their reactions when they get their presents, but then these residents will talk about that moment for the next couple of weeks.” For some residents, this is the only time of year they are given a gift, as they have no family. Ted is one of those residents, “It’s hard because I’ve lost my family, I just have myself and my three brothers. I do appreciate the kids very much, we are very lucky here, we get well looked after, these kids and their teachers go out of their way to help us.”

...The residents really enjoy their company and there are some beautiful conversations that emerge...

Kinross student Sarah Shepherd said, “It’s all about giving back. Kinross and especially our cohort look to give back to the community and we really enjoy doing this sort of thing. It’s also a really positive thing for us, it’s a shared thing amongst the captains that because we are all going through the drought, we are able to give back to people who have given to us.” Talking about the reactions of residents when opening their presents, Sarah added, “Honestly, I’ve just got so much joy for them. I think it’s so cool, like Phil had mentioned to us, they don’t get many presents, and for us to give them that, it’s just such a rewarding experience.” Wontama Uniting Resident, Laurelle Sutton smiled, “It’s very special to us, the children are all very, very lovely, they are so grown up. Phil was spoilt with a book and some chocolates, and a meercat card which he is very proud of, he loves meercats. I was gifted a beautiful frame and some choccies.” It was truly heart-warming to see well done Kinross, what a fantastic initiative.

IAIN “Prior to living in Orange I lived in Cairns for 12 months and prior to that I was in Alice Springs for seven years. The Pool Manager position brought me to Orange, it was a dream job that I had been looking at for the last couple of years. I love Aquatics and have always loved Aquatics; I’ve been doing it close to 40 years. I was what you’d call a ‘Clubby’ I was very much Surf Club based. I worked at Bronte Beach, working alongside ‘Hopper’ from Bondi Rescue, I worked for WESTPAC Life Saver Rescue

Helicopter in Lismore for seven years. I loved the comradery and the team building, we worked in small teams and when you’re dangling on a wire 150m above the water it can be a bit of a thrill. Swimming has been very good to me, I went to Barcelona in ‘92 as a Paralympic Coach. I’ve worked with world champion triathletes. I’m a silver level swim coach, I’m a high-performance triathlon coach, I’m a CrossFit, strength and conditioning coach as well as a PT. For me, Aquatics is about giving

back, giving back to the community and sharing the knowledge. Believe it or not, I also love to read, my favourite Author is James Patterson. I’m very proud of my three children, who are all grown up now, and my new extended family, they are awesome. I’ve got a great bunch of staff and great clients, it’s a win-win situation across the board for me. My mentor said to me when I was just starting out, ‘Its not what you know, but how much you care’ and that’s one thing I have stuck to my entire life.”

For those following my columns regarding the chap who believes he has something worthwhile to offer Orange to help with our water issues, let me provide this final update. Since writing the first column I have received numerous emails, phone calls and visits from people with something to contribute to the discussion. Sadly, no one from Council or any Councillor contacted me about what I had written. Readers can make their own assessment of what that says but speaking for myself, I thought at least one Councillor may have come to me to ask what it was all about. I finally decided that the issue was important enough for me to show greater initiative and contact someone at Council myself. I did that last week and was able to arrange a meaningful meeting with a Senior Council official. The outcome of that meeting opened the way for the chap I have been talking about to sit down with Council and hopefully, have a fruitful discussion. That was what I set out to do in the first place and although I got there through a different door than I’d hoped for, I am satisfied that I have done what I said I’d do. Time will tell if it has all been worthwhile. Overall, it was an interesting experience and along the way I got to meet and talk to some really interesting people who know a lot more about Orange’s water history than I do. Apart from one person who I disregarded because of their manner and disrespectful overtones, the rest of the people

I spoke to clearly have hearts for seeing Orange progress and particularly in solving our water issues into the future. What struck me most was the variety of information, different opinions, ideas and experiences people spoke of over so many years. It was clear to me that there are quite a number of different solutions that people want to talk about and I couldn’t help wonder what would be the outcome if someone sat all these people in a room, listened to what they had to say and then gave each a full evaluation by a panel of experts. Of course, that’s never going to happen, Councils are not known for doing sensible things like that, and if they do, it often appears they are not serious, but rather just trying to meet community expectations. There’s a lot to be said for ‘really’ listening to people who might know what they are talking about, and something I think a lot of organisations would benefit from if they did it more often and with more genuine intent. There’s a lot of wise heads and experience out there with a lot to contribute in their various fields of expertise, if only more decision makers were prepared to tap into them more often, we’d all be better off for sure. I wish! Water is a red hot topic at the moment and I’m sure there’ll be a lot more said about it before it finally rains. We need to talk and plan now while we’re feeling the pain, because once we get significant rain, it’ll be pushed to the backburner until the next serious drought brings it to top of mind again.

For the past eight weeks the entire school community have been busily preparing for the show. A massive 704 kids were involved in the Production, a big team effort led by their Writer/Director extraordinaire, Lindy Powell. Thank you, Mr Disney is a compilation of Disney songs with the 13 main Disney cast characters. Deputy Principal, Rebecca Hilton Brown said, “We work as a team, all of the teachers help out with the dances and anything they can to make sure the kids gets the best out of the show. They love coming to the theatre, they get very excited for their costumes.” A matinee performance will be performed today (Thursday 5) as well as tonight. Each year CWA Central Western Group provide an award to the most deserving fourth year apprentice that’s employed through Skillset, covering all industries. This year’s recipient is Alex Thomas, Alex works as a Carpenter with the

CWA Group Publicity Officer, Christine McIlvain said she was pleased to announce Alex as this year’s recipient and says the scholarship is a great help for apprentices. “The CWA of the Central West Group have had this award going since 1997. To really enjoy the great outdoors, you must make sure your pet is fully vaccinated. Orange is a “hotspot” for the deadly doggy disease Parvovirus. Plus your dog needs protection from Heartworm. This is a parasite, transmitted by the bite of a mosquito, which used to be restricted to the warmer parts of the country. But new research has shown that Heartworm is present in all States and in the Central West too. Your dog can be protected from Heartworm with a convenient annual injection or with monthly tablets or chews. However, its dangerous to start your dog on Heartworm prevention without having them tested for the parasite first. This month, your dog’s Heartworm test will be FREE when he or she starts on an annual Heartworm protection injection. CMY

It’s such fun to get outdoors with your pets. Well behaved dogs on a lead are now welcome at more cafes and venues around town. There is a helpful section on the Orange City Council website www.orange.nsw.gov.au with lots of advice for pet owners. The website also shows areas in Orange where your dog can enjoy playing off their lead. Remember, on lead or off lead, your dog always has to be under control. Most dogs love to walk with their owners and the exercise and the sniffing help to keep your dog’s brain and body active, and keep him or her at a healthy weight. Overweight pets have an increased risk of heart and respiratory disease, liver and kidney problems, arthritis and diabetes – plus their quality of life is reduced. Orange Retired Railway Personnel and Associates gathered for their 2019 Christmas Luncheon last week. John Bastick explained that with just over 80 members he was ‘stoked’ with the turn out on the day. “Most of us here are retired railway people, I’ve been retired 22 years and have always enjoyed the comradeship this group has brought. They are a good bunch, a lot of these people here are friends. We do trips away, we’ve covered some ground, in the past we have travelled to New Zealand, Kangaroo Island, Queensland, Victoria, Norfolk Island, with declining memberships we are doing more day tours to local areas, including Millthorpe, Manildra and Forbes. We have a monthly meeting on the last Friday of the moth at 2pm at Orange City Bowling Club, where we have a guest speakers, get through general business, make representations on behalf of the club, and have a few beers,” John smiled.

Trojan Trays has teamed up with the Salvation Army to see just how the Orange business community can help the Salvos this Christmas.

“We’ve just gone to the Salvos to asked how we can help with what they do every year anyway,” said Trojan Tray managing director Steven Turnbull. “All we are doing is a little bit of the legwork. We have a pretty big network of people that the Salvos may not have connection with, so we have a few businesses around town lined up to go purchase some gifts, bring them back here and then we are going to donate

them on the 18th of December. The Salvos do a very good job, so if we can help by getting them a few bits and bods together then that’s what we’ll do. But they can always do with more, said Steven, who asks any businesses out there interested in helping out the Salvos to get in touch. “There are are a lot of businesses that do stuff already and we are trying to build our little army of businesses who

can band together for this now - and we want to do other things in the future,” he said. “They can contact us directly on 63610039, and either get what they think is needed or they can call here and we can have a chat about what we’ve got already and what else we think we need. “Then we’ll bring it around here and on the 18th we go down to the Salvos and drop it all off.”

— MELISE COLEMAN — Last week the Ladies Probus Club of Orange held their 2019 Christmas Lunch at 174 Bar and Restaurant. President Felicity Cosgrove has been with the club for eight years and mentioned her favourite aspect is the friendships that have been formed. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for people who are retired to meet new people, we have had a lot of fun.” Meetings are held monthly, on the fourth Wednesday of the month, followed by a morning tea and then a guest speaker. The club enjoys social outings and small trips around the region. The small family operation has occupied hundreds of hours with very little reward to show for it until now. “We’ve been laying down our whiskey over the last couple of years. Legally it has to age a minimum of two years before you can sell it, but it can take a lot longer depending on the barrel size,” said Kylie Smith. “So that has been our primary focus but leading up to this summer we’ve really

been testing and trialling gin recipes and finally we’ve got it right and we are ready to take the gin to the commercial market!” With the release of their limited-edition Epoch Signature Dry and Navy Strength Gin, Jones and Smith have decided to auction off their very first number one bottles to give a little to those affected by this devastating bushfire season. “We’ve all been watching the bushfires, which has been a terrible thing and your heart goes out to anyone who has been affected by them,” said Kylie. “We wanted to do something unique and I suppose beneficial with our release. I know some other distilleries like to keep that number one on their shelf and it

was hard to part with, because there is a lot of years of blood, sweat and tears that got us to this point. Orange Ex-Services’ Club honours outstanding local portspeople

Orange Ex-Services’ Club had a record number of nominations for their annual Sports Awards, with many worthy entries vying to be recognised for outstanding achievements in their chosen field.

The Sports Awards were held at the Country Club this year, with all the sporting and social clubs represented. As well as their own golf, bowls and tennis facilities — other sporting and social associations under the Orange Ex-Services’ Club include hockey, soccer, swimming, Card and Glee clubs The following people were acknowledged for the dedication and achievements in their clubs: Harrison Puxty (soccer), Phoebe Johnston (tennis), Reiss Robinson (bowls), Lee Picket (ladies golf), Lee Stinson (bowls), Leanne Kennewell (hockey), Harold (Jim) Finn (bowls), Yvonne Johnston (Glee), Dale Lee (soccer), Elizabeth Stair (ladies golf), Chrissie Kjoller (tennis) and Matthew Kennedy (swimming). But amongst all the worthy nominees this year, the three major awards went to truly outstanding sportspeople in their categories. Junior Sportsperson of the Year — Olsen Kennedy of the Polar Bears Swimming Club

Olsen has been a member of the Polar Bears for the past four years and has participated in swima-thons, swimming over 200 laps to raise funds for various charities. His huge achievements in 2019 include: Senior Boys Champion in 100m freestyle, 200m individual medley, 50m freestyle breaststroke and butterfly and second in 50m backstroke. Olsen qualified for the Western Area Schools swimming carnival, achieving 2nd in Butterfly, 3rd in 50m and 100m freestyle. He also participated in the Head of Independent Co-Educational Schools championships at Homebush, coming 1st in 50m Butterfly, whilst achieving a 10 second personal best time and he also came 2nd in 50M freestyle (missing out on 1st by .21 of a second!); 2nd in 50M breaststroke; 3rd in 100M freestyle and 50M backstroke and also participated in the Senior Relay team which came 4th. At this meet, Olson gained personal bests in every race.

Senior Sportsperson of the Year — Roy Roweth of the OESC Tennis Club Roy has been a member of the Orange Ex-Services’ Tennis Club since 1972 and a committee member since 1976. He was elected Vice President in 1986, a position he held until 2012. Roy has worked tirelessly on the committee, maintaining the Tennis Club’s 10 clay courts, bagging, rolling and marking each court for many years, right up until the time they were converted to a synthetic surface. Awarded a Life Membership of the tennis club, he was recently recognised by having a court named after he and his wife Thelma. For many years, Roy has represented the Orange Ex-Services’ Tennis Club at Country Week, which is a state-wide competition, held at White City in Sydney. He has played in the Mid-State Television

Tournaments, which were televised from the Orange Ex-Services’ Tennis complex. Roy has also represented the Tennis Club in many inter-town matches, thoroughly enjoying every one of them. He never misses playing in the annual Club Championships, entering the Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. He came Runners-up with his grandson in the Consolation Men’s Doubles and Runners-up with his granddaughter in the Consolation Mixed Doubles. At 80 years young, he entered the Seniors Over 35’s Tournament in September this year, playing in the A Grade Men’s Doubles with his son and the B Grade Mixed Doubles with his daughter. Roy says, “It’s the love of the sport and the love of his Club that keeps him going and staying active over all these years.”

Daryl has worked tirelessly to recruit new and old members to the Hockey Club. He could be sighted at the Orange Hockey Complex throughout each week, supporting the Club’s teams and continuing to encourage and support players throughout the season. Daryl supported the Hockey Club’s Executives and was at the forefront of fundraising and building the club’s sponsorships. As a valued player with the Club, he consistently played both Division 1 Men’s as well as being provided an exemption to play each week in the Division 2 Men’s Competition. He could also be found at the hockey fields with a whistle in his mouth, some weeks umpiring

three matches back-to-back before running on the turf in a men’s game. Daryl’s love of sport is not only obvious in the amount of time and energy he has put into leading OESC Hockey, but he has also held the position of Vice President of Orange Hockey Incorporated along with having to delegate umpires to all matches both men’s and women’s throughout the season. During 2019 Daryl has shown great leadership and guidance to all who have come in contact or had questions about hockey. He has always been willing to give a hand or help out where needed. Congratulation to all the worthy winners!

Club Person of the Year Award — Daryl Kennewell The coveted Club Person of the Year Award awardee was Daryl Kennewell of the OESC Hockey Club. Not only has Daryl cared and supported his young family throughout 2019, but he stepped up and took on the role of OESC Hockey Club President after it was brought to his attention that the Club was having difficulties with numbers and was in jeopardy of folding.

It has been big year for Orange’s Small Acres Cyder. Our local cider producer has scored another huge haul of awards at two of Australia’s key cider shows, including being named Australia’s Most Successful Small Producer for the third year in a row.

“To take out best small producer in Australia at the Australian Cider Awards is an awesome award — especially winning it three years in a row, because that award it all about choosing the most consistently high-quality cider cider producer in Australia,” said James Kendall, who along with his wife Gail, founded Small Acres some 12 years ago. Small Acres has picked up over 130 industry awards since they first started producing in 2007. But given the passion James puts into his products, the recognition is still welcome. “I suppose I’m most proud of the fact we took out Champion Cider for our Cat’s Pyjamas at the Sydney Royal Beer and Cider Show this year. Now we’ve always got medals, but this year we took out Champion for the Methode Champenois class with the Cat’s Pyjamas — that is certainly a high point for me.” Small Acres 2017 Sparkling Perry was also named Best Perry in Australia at the Australian Cider Awards, another proud moment for James. “It was a pretty good set of show winnings so that was great,” he said. “And this year it was the highest number of entries in the Australian Cider Awards with nearly 300 entries.” Small Acres success is the result of twelve years’ hard work and the vision of founders

James and Gail Kendall. At the time they first began to discuss the concept back in 2003, James and Gail were both working corporate roles in Sydney but looking to make a tree change and find a better work/ life balance. Introducing Australia to the cider styles they knew and loved from their time in Europe seemed to be opportunity they were looking for. “My wife Gail grew up in Bristol, so Somerset, southwest UK, which is cider capital of the UK… I had been working in the UK for six or seven years. I was in the beer industry, but obviously in the UK you get exposed to cider,” said James. “And travelling through places like Germany, France and Spain and seeing all the different style of cider that they produce and the culture surrounding it; when we came back to Australia there was none of that here. There was none of these champagne styles that we do, or the apple wine styles that you see in Germany, and we just thought there was an opportunity.” After doing a bit of market research and assuring themselves there was place for a premium cider range in Australia, they took the plunge. “And that’s what we’ve been doing ever since,” said James, who has been pleased to see a growing appreciation for the tradition cider styles that they focus on.

“Our main focus is on doing the large bottle format Methode Champenois style ciders and the apple wines, which are created much more along the lines of how a winemaker would create a grape wine, exactly the same processes and equipment, we are just using a different fruit,” he said. “These sorts of styles, to me in any case, have more of a place at different occasions like matching with food or celebrations and they are just more complex, more depth of flavour and more interesting styles of cider rather than your average, everyday mainstream cider.” When Small Acres began there were just a handful of craft cider makers in Australia, but that number is now well over 100 and growing each year — as is the appreciation for cider in Australia. “We are still educating the market, but certainly when we started there was one other product on the shelf and we were coming in with styles of cider that the bottle shop manager and the restaurant sommelier had probably never seen before,” said James. “Since we started the industry has grown tenfold and it is now part of just about every Australian’s regular repertoire. And we get a lot of cider enthusiasts these days who specifically come and see us, that’s the who reason they come to Orange.”

Farmers and Fruit Bats Rejoice! Orchardists in the Central West battling drought will soon be able to access funding to install new netting for their fruit trees under a new Federal Government netting subsidy trial. $2 million has been set aside for the local trial which has been very warmly received by local orchardists. It is the only netting trial site in NSW. This is something our local orchardists and I have been

fighting for over a long period of time. Studies have shown that water savings of up to 20% are achievable when orchardists use netting to cover their trees. Besides water savings, netting protects fruit from both sunburn and hail. It also the most effective means of protecting crops from flying foxes. Without netting, orchardists are left with no choice but to get permits to

The scheme will commence in 2020 and operate until 31 December 2021 or until funds are fully committed. Delivery arrangements are being finalised and further details will be available on the Federal Department of Agriculture’s website shortly. MILLTHORPE MARKET ANOTHER SUCCESS Twice a year, Millthorpe comes alive with the Millthorpe Markets. I dropped into the markets on Sunday morning to catch up with Nick Anagnostaras who is the President of the Millthorpe Village Committee. Whilst the markets are a very successful fund-raiser for the Millthorpe Public School, the Millthorpe Village Committee received a Federal Government Tackling Tough Times Together grant of $12,286 earlier this year to assist with events such as this. The grant has provided event signage, sun shades and storage and equipment for the many volunteers who run community events in Millthorpe. It is designed to provide more secure storage, whilst also helping to reduce fatigue. The next markets are on in Millthorpe in early April and I suggest you get there for a look. DEFIBRILLATORS SAVE LIVES. IT IS AS SIMPLE AS THAT.

Every year 30,000 people die of cardiac arrests, but thousands of these deaths could be avoided if a defibrillator was at hand. Without a defibrillator you have a 6 per cent chance of surviving a cardiac arrest, with one it can be as high as 90 per cent. Since the tragic death of a close friend, former Australian Iron Man Guy Leech has made it his mission in life to get defibrillators within 180 seconds of every Australian. And it was his campaign that sparked a local business to help extend that mantle of safety here in Orange. “I saw the ad on TV with Guy Leech saying what

had happened to his friend,” said Belinda King, from Central West Brakes and Clutch Service on Peisley Street. “And I’ve known of a few people who have passed away due to heart attacks — not necessarily in that situation — but I just discussed it with Rod and said I think it is something that could be well worth putting into the business.” Belinda approached their first aid kit supplier and they recommended and installed a suitable defibrillator for the business. She contacted Orange City Life just to make people aware that they have the defibrillator

available and to encourage other local businesses to invest in this life saving equipment. “I feel it is a good thing to have. We want to let them know that small businesses can be a part of the solution, it doesn’t have to be the big businesses in town. Small business outside of the CBB and off the main drag can get involved in providing coverage,” she said. “We have a lot of people walking past and a lot of customers in and out so now this is here if required. The Roundabout ‘Tis the season to be Jolly, but keep your brain on, eh? It would appear that the populationat-large has jumped on board with my intolerance for behind the wheel mobile phone users, acceptance of this illegal activity nowadays is very low. Every Thursday as I open this fine magazine, one of my first missions is to go to the back and read the Thumbs section. More often than not, there are at least two ‘thumbs down’ entries where people are highlighting dangerous, careless or reckless driving behaviour around the region. The offences mentioned range from speeding, rolling through pedestrian crossings, crazy stunts and impatience. The difference between a near miss and something very serious is the tiniest of margins, and in the main we can thank our lucky stars that the most of the issues highlighted are just near misses. Touch wood, touch wood. There’s a lot of roundabouts in the Orange district. A lot. I like to lean on stats when making statements, and I don’t have any as I type, but my travel experience tells me that our fabulous town has an amount of roundabout that would be above the average number. Maybe even a standard deviation or two above the mean, if you love your maths. Roundabouts keep the traffic flowing, allow a more fair and even flow of vehicular activity from all entries and exits, and are less obtrusive or conspicuous in my opinion that a set of traffic lights. So, you’d think that with all those roundabouts at our disposal, we’d be super proficient and skilful at using them, wouldn’t you? The NRMA website has roundabout etiquette at #1 on their list of ‘the top ten most misunderstood road rules’.

Go figure. Maybe we need some signs and education about the use of these fabulous traffic assisters. There’s a town out here a little further west that actually has signs on some of its roundabouts that say something like ‘signal off the roundabout’, which means use your blinker when you are leaving the thing. You don’t have to signal when coming on to the roundabout, just signal off. There’s a little exception that says ‘when it’s impractical to do so’, but that wouldn’t really count on the large roundabouts we have in our Colour City. Our biggest prob is that many/most of the roundabouts are dual-laned, and plenty a motorist is very liberal about the way they enter from one lane, travel through and then exit from a random lane. It’s not even a long story … you CANNOT change lanes in a roundabout. Turning left? Then be in the left lane. Going straight? Either lane is OK, and other traffic needs to be aware of this key rule. Going right? Then you MUST do that from the inside lane. Easy. Now, the biggie. If you start from the inside lane (closest to the middle of the road, then you have to stay there, you can’t just weave across the roundabout mid-journey because that’s where the supermarket entrance, the car wash or the petrol station is. Suggestion: make a plan about 5 seconds before you get to the actual roundabout – then, commit to the plan, no changing your mind halfway through. I’m just speculating here, but I reckon much of the problem on the 2-lane roundabouts comes from lazy or casual one-handon-the-wheel drivers, who turn it into a ‘straightabout’ by starting on the inside lane, then weaving across to the outside lane as they exit so as not to have to turn at all. Sorry, I turned this weekly entry into a 600 word ‘thumbs down’ for roundabout use. I promise to be jolly next week and tell you how much I love the Christmas season.

“I love making these products, it is a family tradition,” says Cured’s Stefan Birmili, a third-generation German butcher with a passion for hand-crafted artisan meats.

“I’ve been pretty well brought up making these sorts of products and everything to do with it. Even in our house in Germany we had a full sausage production facility in the basement.’ Stefan was just ten-year-old when his family left Stuttgart for Sydney and it wasn’t long before his father Rudi set up his shop to make smallgoods to his own traditional recipes. Since Rudi retired 25 years ago, Stefan has continued to operate the shop his father founded — Rudi’s Continental Meats in Kirrawee, which is now one of the oldest German butchers in Sydney. After relocating to Orange several years ago, Stefan realised there was a gap in the market for the products he makes. “We found this little space and it has gone really well,” said Stefan. “Orange is a foodie region and it sort of hit the spot with a lot of different nationalities here… Our twiggys are very popular, the pâté and the salamis are extremely popular, the smoked sausages too and we’ve found the Biltong — the South African style jerky — is a big hit! “We can slice the bacon we make to size for people who want it thicker… and black pudding has been really popular too, I didn’t expect to sell as much as we do.” Most of Stefan’s products are gluten, preservative, egg and dairy free and his meat is sourced only from select Central West and Riverina producers. “It is just meat and spices that we put into our products, so it hits the spot with all the dietary

needs,” said Stefan, who has found people are increasingly wanting to know where their food has come from. “It is coming back to where artisanal production is going to come to the fore, that trend to get local, where the traceability of ingredients is just as important as anything else.” “And it is that artisanal side of it that I love; we can work seasonally, we can make small batches, we can work with whatever the demand is and make changes and because it is all made by us.” Stefan and his team are currently focusing on producing hams in time for Christmas. “We do as many as we can in the month before Christmas. We only make them fresh, so they are not pre-packaged or anything like that, they are less processed, and you can tell it is a handmade product,” said Stefan Half of Stefan’s have already been pre-sold, so if you want a real traditional smoked ham get in quick! Owner Jane Hyde is getting into the Christmas spirit by drawing up a floral Christmas menu and running weekly giveaways on her Facebook page. She says that now is the time to order ahead in time for Christmas. “We’re busy creating festive designs for our top-ofthe-range Christmas wreaths and spectacular table arrangements – these are always really popular so preordering will secure you get what you want.” It’s a busy time of year with work dos, farewells, secret Santa’s and general all-round celebrations, says Jane. “If you need to grab a quick ‘thank you’ or add something to complement a gift, our $25 floral wheelbarrow specials are available daily at the door.” The Christmas and New Year offerings in store don’t stop at flowers. “We’ve got beautiful candles, hand creams and soaps and we’re busy planning our feature-packed Christmas gift hampers. Chaos and Karma In May this year that Jordie Garlick and her mother Helen McBurnie got to fulfil their dream of turning what was their hobby into a full-time business.

“We had been doing the markets for about four years, selling all our own original artwork, sculptures, handmade items and earrings,” said Jordie. “But it was always a goal to have our own business. We searched for a while for a shop and when this one came up we jumped on it and we were here in three weeks!” Jordie and Helen are both keen artists and at Chaos and Karma you will find an extensive collection of their original work, framed and unframed in various sizes and cards, as well as a large range of handcrafted earrings. “I do a lot in here in the shop on quiet days otherwise it is a lot of late nights,” said Jordie. “I know I can hear mum on the sewing machine going at midnight sometimes.” As well as their own work, Chaos and Karma stock an eclectic mix of products from women’s fashion and children’s clothes to handcrafted accessories, giftware, soaps, decor and confectionary. “We have ladies’ clothes from size 6 to size 16, we have kid’s clothes 0 to 8, we have baby gifts — cowhide fashion accessories are a big seller,” said Jordie. “The Avarcas are very popular, we sell a lot of those shoes — they are all handmade, comfortable and long

wearing. Our liquorice and chocolate are from Junee, so it’s Australian and most of our cowhide comes from Melbourne, we try to stock Australian made. Chaos and Karma particularly like to source artisan, hand-made products where they can. “We sell two different types of soap, but they are both made in Australia, just ladies doing the same thing we are, trying to make and sell something,” said Jordie “We sell lots of little bits and pieces; we try and be different and try to keep it not so commercial. “People don’t realise just how much variety we have here — we aren’t just clothes, we aren’t just kids, we aren’t just art. There’s a lot in our little shop!” And there’s a lot Chaos and Karma try to do for Orange too; proud advocates of loving local they have become a pick up point for the Ladies of the Land intuitive sending over 200 boxes on to women affected by drought, and in response to the bush fire crisis have teamed up with The Rescue Collective sending on 30kg of supplies to help burnt and injured wildlife. And it was for that reason that Kelly Ward and her son Riley bought the business three years ago “It’s a part of our history, it has been around a long time and I didn’t want to lose it out of Orange,” said Kelly. “Grandfathers, fathers and grandsons have all sat at this very milk bar. I thought someone has to save it; it was just missing some love.” Kelly certainly puts plenty of love into her work and the Coronet has become a home away from home for many children. “Kids feel comfortable here, they’re at home and they yabba yabba, they come tell you stories, you get cuddles and I’ve got homemade crafts that kids bring me,” said Kelly, who is always careful to make sure she caters to everyone. “We have 18 flavours of Norgen Vaaz ice cream— it is beautiful ice cream! And we have three flavours of sorbet, plus a selection of Streets packaged ice creams, so that way no child misses out. If they’ve got allergies, or are dairy free, I have something for them.” In fact, Kelly also keeps a folder behind the counter with dietary information about their products and she is pretty sure she has something for everyone is her extensive lolly range. “When we took over, I think we had 30 individual lollies, but now we’ve got well over the hundreds!” she said. “And I don’t buy anything unless it is quality, I

don’t buy a cheaper version of anything because that is not what we are. We’re are a specialty lolly shop and we make sure we have the originals.” The Coronet still has the original 1940’s counter, one of the original milkshake machines and still makes the chocolate syrup to the original recipe. “We make all the chocolate frogs ourselves now — plain dairy milk, white chocolate, we have a caramel frog, the ruby chocolate frog, and then we have two that were designed by five-year-olds —a reverse freckle, with the hundreds and thousands in the middle and a Milo frog. The kids love the Milo frog!” said Kelly. “We also make giant freckles, we do the ‘lolly pizza’, and then my Christmas-inspired giant freckles.” With Christmas not far away, Kelly has also been busy making up gift baskets and customised Christmas stockings. “You can bring a stocking to me, or you can pick from the stockings I have here. We also have gift vouchers and we do lolly bags for birthday parties, or weddings or whatever you require!” Kelly can also make ice-cream cakes to order (pick your own flavours!) and look out over summer for her jelly and ice cream! “Sprinkles are for free for kids, if they use their manners,” said Kelly. “There is a catch! I’m still a Nanna and a Mum at the end of the day!” Coronet Milk Bar is open seven days a week.

How to get the BEST out of OUR COUNCILS with AMANDA SPALDING

SHOULD THE COMMUNITY DO A PERFORMANCE REVIEW OF THE COUNCIL? A couple of weeks ago I wrote about What is Good Governance? I advise on good governance in my business and it has become good practice to evaluate the performance of a Board at least every two years. Different private sector boards use different methods to undertake the evaluation and different criteria. Some undertake a review by confidential surveys of directors and management and the review can include: • the structure and operation of the board • the skills and characteristics required to maximise its effectiveness • the appropriateness of the board’s practices and procedures to meet the present and future needs of the company • the delivery of strategic plan Key Performance Indicators • opportunities for improvement.

What else should be included in performance evaluation? In NSW Councillors comprise the governing body of a council in the same way that a Board of Directors is the governing body of a corporation, so should there be a performance review of the governing body of Council? A councillor is accountable to the local community for the performance of the council. I shall consider the performance of the Council in comparison to its strategic plans once the Annual Report for 2018/19 is available. Recently Orange City Council reported on Councillor attendance, training and compliance during the current term of Council that started in September 2017 and ends in September 2020. There was some debate about whether attendance at meetings constitutes performance. Diversity is important and that includes diversity of personal circumstances including people employed full-time or part-time in different occupations; unemployed, students or retired people; people who are self-employed running their own business; parents and carers. Councils generally try hard to facilitate the ability of Councillors to attend meetings and that includes providing funding for childcare and carers during meetings and conferences. I thought it would be helpful to look at the statistics provided in the report graphically.

It could be asked which meetings are most important, and is there a minimum expectation of Councillors’ attendance at meetings? Clearly attendance at Council and Policy Committee meetings are very important. Having spent over 25 years in senior management in local government I would argue that briefings are equally important as they tend to show a Councillor’s willingness to listen to staff and to learn. With regard to Community Committees the number of committees each Councillor is involved in is not included in the graph. It shows the proportion of Community Committee meetings that a Councillor attended of those they were committed to attend. Part of any evaluation of the effectiveness of Community Committees could include a confidential survey of community representatives on the effectiveness of each Councillor and community member and what each Committee achieved measured against the strategic plan of what it set out to achieve. The Council report also looks at training undertaken by Councillors. The 2016 Reforms to the Local Government Act added to the role of individual Councillors - to make all reasonable efforts to acquire and maintain the skills necessary to perform the role of a councillor. Councils are now required to develop a Professional Development Program in consultation with all councillors and delivered over the term of the council to build the skills, knowledge and personal attributes necessary to be an effective mayor or councillor. It appears that effectiveness is yet to be defined, so it is currently difficult to evaluate the performance of Councillors with regard to the training they have undertaken as described in the report. The number of training courses undertaken by each Councillor is shown in the table above. The Office of Local Government recommends that all Councillors attend the ‘Hit the Ground Running Workshops,’ regardless of whether they are new or returning Councillors and record who does attend. The new requirements concerning induction and professional development of Councillors came into force in December 2018. From the 2019/20 Annual Report onwards Councils will be required to report information in their annual reports on the induction and ongoing professional development activities offered to the mayor and each councillor.

NSW Junior Triathlon Championships Photos by EdithMay Gowing The NSW Junior Triathlon Championships were held at Gosling Creek on Saturday November 30th. The event was held as several timed short course heat races with times combined to for placing in either the A or B finals. Competitors travelled from around the state including, Sydney, Hunter region and Central Coast as well as closer including Bathurst and Dubbo. There were also 5 International competitors with 2 from Spain, 2 from Chile and 1 from Germany. A number of Emerging Talent and Talent ID squads were also involved.

Robbie Mortimer has brought joy and happiness to many a special occasion across the Central West as the interpreter of other people’s songs, now he invites you to join him celebrate the launch of his debut album of original music. NEW EXHIBITIONS BY LOCAL ARTISTS AT ORANGE REGIONAL GALLERY Orange Regional Gallery will see out 2019 with two new exhibitions by local artist Ros Auld and Bill Moseley. Ros Auld is inspired by the natural world. Based in her studio at Borenore, where she has been for forty years, Ros makes work that responds to the landscape around her. Her exhibition Adventures in Ceramics includes cast bronzes, vessels, wall pieces, sculptures and collaborations from the 1970s to today, including a new series of small works created over the last few months in response to Ian Fairweather’s ‘Woman at Window’ (1955), a painting from the Mary Turner Collection at Orange Regional Gallery. This is the first time a survey exhibition of this scope has been presented of Ros Auld’s works, introducing unseen works alongside familiar pieces in a new context that will take the viewer on their very own adventure through Ros’ ever-changing practice. Hill End artist Bill Moseley’s exhibition A Lake, a Forest and the Dark Voice of the Sea presents a series of ambrotypes – an early photographic technique from the 1850s where photographs are printed onto glass – along with digital video that focuses on nature at its most grand. In February 2019, Moseley undertook a ten-day voyage, sailing from Hobart to Sydney on a historic ship. During this voyage, he captured footage of the shores of Tasmania and Bass Strait, producing a series of ambrotypes and digital video work. Impressive in scale, the floor to ceiling video projection, accompanied by audio of crashing waves and howling sea winds, offers the viewer an immersive experience of the sublime power of the sea. The exhibition will be opened at 6pm Friday, 13 December, by Kon Gouriotis OAM, Editor of Artist Profile Magazine Ros Auld and fellow artist and collaborator, Tim Winters will present an artist talk at 5:30pm prior to the opening. A guide to surviving Christmas! — Contributed by Emily Thompson —

It starts slowly enough. The shops pack away their Halloween decorations and the shelves remain empty for a good three hours until the night packers unload the first glimpses of yuletide cheer. Some red and green baubles, boxes of fairy lights and jars of chocolate coated almonds. Then the invitations start arriving. A work Christmas party one day, an end of year dance concert the next and suddenly you’re drawing up lists, your calendar is full until January, the entire Central West sparkles with tinsel and if your credit card could text it would send you a barrage of abuse followed by sincere suggestions that you seek professional help. Sound familiar? Never fear, follow these helpful suggestions to avoid the impending complete nervous breakdown. 1) Announce via social media that you have found spiritual enlightenment and no longer believe in materialistic, consumer-driven, global commercialism and are embracing the concepts of kindness, physical love and emotional warmth. These are the only gifts you intend to give and receive. 2) Actually find spiritual enlightenment and do this. 3) Become the annoying person in your social circle whom everyone secretly despises that says in midOctober “I’m all prepared for Christmas”. 4) For the love of god, please teach us all how to become this person. 5) Make concise, well-structured word document about who to buy for, where to buy it from, what the budget is and where you have hidden it. Don’t forget the last step or you will never find it again. Special shout out to the Frozen dolls that have been *somewhere* in my linen closet since 2013. 6) Show your more computer literate partner wellstructured word document proudly. Be criticised for not using excel. Raise voice slightly and emphasise excellent use of columns. Make excel document tabulating why you are always right, and email it to your partner who is no longer speaking to you.

7) Take children to see Christmas lights, as a lovely family activity. Listen to your eldest complain that you have lights at home. Listen to your youngest snore because it’s 9pm before its dark enough to see anything. Get home and put her to bed, cue massive meltdown because she didn’t see the lights. Get eldest child to show her the lights you already had at home. Reflect upon the 2.5 hours you just wasted. 8) Agree to organise charity event, cater for street party, decorate for work Christmas party, co-ordinate office secret Santa and bring potato salad to family Christmas lunch. Cry. Feel the pain. Remember the pain. Draw on it next year when you contemplate any Christmas participation. 9) Bake gingerbread men for your child’s school Christmas party, staying up until 4am to decorate them all perfectly. The next day painfully watch the smartie-buttons all slide off as the icing melts in the 38 degree heat. Wonder why we bake bizarre things like shortbread and roast turkey in the middle of summer. Spend the entire day helping your child’s teacher in the classroom dealing with overstimulated, overtired, sugar-laden children. Go home and throw handmade present in the bin, and instead buy the teacher 26 year

Dreaming of a Green Christmas Station Manager Farren Hotham at 107.5FM writes: The Dreaming of a Green Christmas CD is supporting farmers and promoted by Lifeline. FM 107.5 is helping out the community by being a sales outlet for the community. Copies are available from our station office at 77 Kite Street. Central West Music stars Smith and Jones, Andy Nelson and Orange superstar Amy Viola star on the CD and have contributed their voices and hearts to this project, targetted at helping our farmers. Lifeline’s Stephanie Robinson has been a powerhouse in working with the artists and her efforts have been noticed by many in the community people as well as the artists involved.

AID WEEK AT PH’S MANILDRA We have had a te am of volunteer workers at our sc hool who have wo rked tirelessly all week to complete som e amazing projects around the school . They have worked through wind, smoke and heat wa ve conditions, all the while smiling as they work. The students enjoyed morning tea with the volunteers durin g their visit. On Friday the stu dents thanked th e volunteers and pr esented them wi th a special gift and handmade cards. The students also sang a song abou t our visitors and Ma nildra. This was an extraordinary mom ent in 2019 for ou r school and it will be remembered fo ra long time to com e. Thank you to all involved in Rural Aid and for what you have done fo r St Joseph’s Mani ldra and the wide r Manildra commun ity. YOU ARE AMAZING!!!!!!!!! I would to like to comment on your article, November 20 Chris Colvin Vice President RSL. I believe there are some inaccuracies in this article and is historically incorrect. Mr Colvin says he didn’t go to Vietnam due to a change of Government. There was no change of government until Gough Whitlam came to power twelve months after the Australian Task Force left the Nui Dat Base. We went into Vietnam under a Liberal Government and we came out under a Liberal Government. I served at the Nui Dat Base with the Ist Australian Task Force (1 ATF) Phuoc Tuy Province for most of 1971. This had been the centre of Australia’s efforts since 1966. In 1971 Nui Dat consisted of two infantry Battalions, centurion tanks, armoured personal carriers, three gun batteries, engineers the SAS and some American artillery and various smaller units. New Zealand were incorporated into the 1 ATF also. Thirty kilometres to the south on the coast was Vung Tau a small city where ALSG (Australia Logistic Group) was situated. It was here we had support troops, a hospital, workshops etc, RAAF helicopters and transport planes. Vung Tau had a port for our navy especially HMAS Sydney. On the 18th August 1971 we listened to the radio to hear Liberal Prime Minister Billy McMahon describing our final withdrawal from Vietnam and him saying that combat troops (Nui Dat troops) would be home by Christmas 1971. It was general knowledge before that we would not be there much longer. Operations from Nui Dat continued and sadly we still took casualties. Our tanks came home and Nui Dat started to draw down. On the 6th of October 3 RAR infantry left Vung Tau aboard HMAS Sydney for Australia. About one month later 4 RAR boarded HMAS Sydney for home. A small group consisting of a company of infantry of 4 RAR, 104 gun Battery which I had served with until a few weeks before, and armoured personnel carriers stayed at Nui Dat to finish up and drove out the gates of Nui Dat early November 1971 and moved to Vung Tau, thus ending our operational commitment in Vietnam. The Army of The Republic of Vietnam took over the Base. This was dangerous for this small group of Aussies as two North Vietnamese regiments were still in the province. This happened a year before any change of Government by Gough Whitlam in November 1972 and counters your article. By March 1972 the remaining troops at Vung Tau had come home. The Navy and RAAF units finished up too. The only troops left were advisors and embassy guards. I believe your article perpetuates the myth that Gough brought us home from Vietnam. True, he brought the advisors home and ceased National Service, but that’s it. Mr Colvin says, “history is important.” I agree, but let’s get it right. I agree that whether anyone went to Vietnam or not, we all did our bit. But we do owe it to our Vets who never came home to get the details correct. After fifty years there are plenty of vets with problems. Articles like this do little to help their cause. Last year I returned to Vietnam on a Vets tour. I placed tokens at the Long Tan Cross at the battle site for a family whose brother was killed there. I also visited the beach near where Orange man Tim Cutcliffe was killed, holding a small service on behalf of his family. I also learnt that the Vietnamese government only allow two memorials on their soil to foreign troops, one is for the French at Dien Bien Phu 1954, which I visited. The other is for the Aussies and Kiwis at Long Tan 1966. We should be proud of that fact considering we were only a small force.

I cringed this year as I pulled the name out of a hat for my secret Santa recipient. Not because they are that annoying family member we all wish we weren’t related to. But because the name I drew belonged to a very unwell man, as he is losing his fight with cancer and has been told he won’t see the end of summer. What do you buy for someone in that situation? Socks? Books? DVDs? It seems so meaningless… and I can’t even wrap up a cure, as there isn’t one. And then there is making the card, what can I write? The truth is, I have absolutely no idea what I will place under the tree. As our family goes through this sadness I cling to these words, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). Sadly, he is facing death (as we all will one day) but death is not the end. No death is only the beginning. Surely, that hope is the only gift we all need.

Last week Orange City Life carried a Thumbs down to Orange Council for not releasing water out of Gosling Creek and Suma Park so Kinross could utilise the area for their rowing. That Thumbs down was totally unwarranted and completely wrong. I, as Editor, take full responsibility for this Thumbs appearing, when I read it, I obviously wasn’t concentrating enough, and I read it to mean something else. We take great care to filter out anything that we feel may be subject to another side of the story or that may unfairly offend someone. On this occasion I failed to do that.
