Sometimes we feel we’re badly done by living in the bush but last weekend I realised that’s not always the case. I travelled to Newcastle on Friday but before leaving I filled the car at a local servo, we use the premium fuel and paid 158.9 per litre. When we arrived at Wallsend, there are two Shell servos on opposite sides of the road, both had signs saying 193.9 per litre for V-Power. That’s 35 cents per litre dearer! Love living in Orange!

Despite a lot of fear and concerns surrounding the drought, water, the economy and so on, Orange certainly seems to be enjoying a bit of a high at the moment with a lot of positive activity happening. The City Centre revamp and the news from Cadia have both provided reasons for added activity and excitement and both point to significant economic gains for Orange ahead. With these two happenings to springboard off, other lesser activities are even sounding better than they may otherwise. I think it’s fair to say the mood in Orange right now is more positive than in other places and that can only be a good thing. The recent hype and activity and set to continue this weekend with Santa’s arrival at the City Centre on Saturday morning and other local businesses tapping into the celebrations. We too are supporting the opportunity by teaming up with Put Orange First to add to the fun. You can read more about what we’re doing in this issue. Let me also remind readers of the visit by Cricketing legend Jim Maxwell coming up very soon. Jim’s legendary status doesn’t come from exploits on the field but from his time behind the mike in a commentary box for what seems to have been a lifetime. Few cricket fans would not have enjoyed Jim Maxwell’s take on cricket at some time during their life and for many, cricket probably isn’t cricket unless you’re listening to Jim call it. If you’d like to hear and meet Jim when he’s in Orange, check the ad on page 24. It’s a bigger issue of OC Life this week and I hope you enjoy the extra reading. A familiar name and for many a familiar face in our Region, and rightly so... Bernie Huxtable is a remarkable man who has done many remarkable things, at 90 years old, he sat down and shared some of his experiences with me describing his life as ‘constantly exciting.’

orn in Woollahra Sydney, in 1929 Bernie, like many his age was affected by World War II. “My Father went off to the war at very short notice in 1940, he was captured in Singapore and survived four years of captivity, and another six months of ill health before he returned. He was away from us for about five years. It was a huge change in everyone’s lives. I grew up in the depression and was the eldest of four children, money was very tight. There was a lot of bare footed kids wearing cutdown old trousers from their older brother, their lunch might have been a bread and tomato sauce sandwich, which I didn’t mind the look of, but my mother wouldn’t give me that, I’d get a nourishing vegemite sandwich.” “I didn’t get an allowance until I went to boarding school, I think I got a shilling a week, we would go downtown on a Saturday, you could buy a tin of sweetened condensed milk for elevenpence which was nearly a shilling, or you could save up your money and every second week you could have a thing called an American chocolate... I could hardly bear to save up for two weeks in a row,” Bernie laughed. “Quite often people wouldn’t pay Dad for his work or they would pay in-kind, I came home one day and saw two live crabs tied up to our tree in our garden... a fisherman had brought them in to pay the Dr (my Father). It was a completely different world.” Growing up Bernie mentioned there was family pressure that he should study medicine, “There was a lot of Huxtable Doctors, they would say, ‘It’s your duty to be a Doctor’. I think I did want to be a Doctor. I wasn’t terribly ambitious; I didn’t get interested in medicine until I had just about got through the course. Once we got into hospitals and started treating people, I found medicine very interesting. It was also very challenging, and I had to work terribly hard for

a long time in my life, long hours and not many holidays, but it was always very interesting.” At Sydney’s Prince Alfred Hospital, there I was inspired to do my higher degree in Medicine. Later on in my life I was the first consultant physician here in Orange. A lot of my time was spent doing Cardiology, the idea of operating on the heart was strange, people thought it wasn’t possible. They eventually developed heart and lung machines, that was a great advancement, that happened around the time I was still training. I put in the first pacemakers here a long time ago, I started Coronary Care here in 1966, so that’s been going for 53 years. We had no idea just how advanced it would all become.” Bernie couldn’t single out a certain memory from his Medicine days, though he did say, “If you can manage to pull somebody back or make some great diagnosis that changes their life, well then you come home to your wife and you say, ‘well I’ve had a nice day today.’ There’s lots of times when you can’t do very much for the patients except do the best you can to make them feel comfortable. There’s always something you can do for a patient, no matter how sick they are. That’s one of the arts of Medicine actually.” Bernie retired in 1994, after 40 years in medicine. There’s not much in our community that Bernie hasn’t put his hand to, he and his wife, Colina are very keen bird watchers, he played a vital role in ‘Friends of the Botanic Gardens’ bird walks, he has been involved with Rotary for 56 years and when I asked what he was most proud of he took a moment to reflect. “I’m proud of anything I did to help the development of our hospital. We did our best to encourage students and residents, to want to come to Orange. So, we gave them a good time when they came here, we taught the best way we could, we took them out and about. We enthused them so we got a lot of good people on staff. “The second thing is being able to help and start a sheltered workshop here, now known

When we started that I was the foundation Vice President, then I became the President, and when I was President, we built Wangarang, it’s a beautiful building. “We had no government money, I collected about a dozen people to start the sheltered workshop, it was in a room that we hired on Franklin Road. Email Factory were very good to us, they gave us a cheque for $100 which was a lot of money in those days, they would pay us for the work that we did, so we morally decided we should be giving it to the people working there, which pleased them very much. We pretty soon outgrew that room, so we got the use of the old drill hall, the numbers grew, we got more work, more trainees, we gradually accumulated some money. Toward the end of the 60s we were given a two for one building subsidy, so we started a campaign to raise more money and we designed and built Wangarang. I am a life member of the organisation.” When I asked Bernie what his favourite Rotary memory was he didn’t hesitate to choose, “On Thursday night this week when they turned on a surprise dinner for me,” Bernie laughed, “They gave me a presentation, the Male Voice Choir sang some songs which was lovely and they sang happy birthday to me so that was nice. It was a lovely night. Rotary has given me so much more than I have given Rotary. If you feel in your life that you need to do something for your community, it gets a lot of different people to work together.” After not long meeting Bernie it become very apparent that he is a very humble and kind man, and if this story doesn’t prove it, this last quote will. Thankyou Bernie for sharing your life stories with us! “I don’t wish to live in a palace, I don’t wish to earn a million dollars a year and I don’t wish to fly on a private jet somewhere... I am very content with my life, proud of my family and what I have given to the community.”

DRIVERS STILL DON’T GET IT! My wife and I spent last weekend in Newcastle doing the granny thing for our kids, and while driving home I made an interesting observation, one that I felt warranted one of my comments in OC Life.

speed limit. My wife was with me and just having her in the car is like having a traffic cop, speed camera and GPS system all keeping an eye on you at the same time.

The result was I sat right on the speed limit on all the highway and freeway sections. On the Hunter Expressway I sat on 110ks where appropriate and on the Golden Highway and road through Ulan, Gulgong etc. I sat on the limit of 100ks where it was safe and We’re also aware of the constant responsible to do so. beer) made it an experience like no other. A close second was ferrying at sunset from an island off Cancun, Mexico back to the mainland (that was on a different trip). There was an extremely talented local playing the guitar and singing Spanish music in the open air top deck of the boat, it was pristine and still probably the best end to a day I’ve had. I’d have to say some of my

favourite childhood memories would be our camping trips to Coolabah, spending the holidays out there with family and friends we would always have a great time. I’m super proud of my family and the friends I’ve met through my life and travels and those relationships I’ve built that have made everything more exciting.”

If this was official research, the experts would have a field day with headlines something like “40 out of 41 drivers speed or drive too fast!” Not sure about you, but I think that’s something for us all to think about, especially with the Christmas holidays coming up soon. Tech tools helping farmers adapt to our changing climate

he Climate-Smart Pilots project, which is part of the NSW Primary Industries Climate Change Research Strategy, involves establishing a freely accessible wireless sensor network across the region. Network gateways installed around Orange, Bathurst and Molong are allowing local farmers to a connect a range of battery powered sensors to monitor everything from rainfall, temperature and light conditions to water levels in individual dams and troughs. “It is looking at ways in which we can utilise technology to provide farmers with the tools to better deal with climate variability and in the future provide better information for management of that variability under current and future climates,” said Dr Allen Benter, who is leading the project. “We’ve already got a number of farmers connected with tank monitors so that they can see remotely where the water level is in their tank wherever they are. We are setting up some light meters for an apple and cherry orchard, so that they can see the impacts of their shading experiments, whether it be through greater canopy growth on their plants, or using netting to protect their orchard from the summer heat” In another example at Bateman’s Bay, sensors in the water give real time data to oyster farmers on temperature and salinity. “The way most farmers are going to experience climate change is through an increase in variability” said Dr Benter. “By being able to respond to extreme events in the short term, gives farmers a chance to

run off a small battery for quite some years before having to have that battery replaced. “And the data is encrypted so even though it comes across a public network, nobody can access the data without all the relevant security keys.” And it is not just farmers, local councils are also very interested in the technology, said Dr Benter. Proposed uses include parking monitors, water meters, and rubbish bin sensors. “So instead of having to send out trucks to empty all rubbish bins whether they are full or empty, this way they are only directed to empty those that are actually full,” said Dr Benter. “So councils become much more efficient using the resources that they’ve got.” Information on the project is available at www.farmdecisiontech.net.au and starting early next year Dr Benter said they will be running workshops in an around Orange and Bathurst to demonstrate the technology to farmers and the community. “Next year it should really kick off and be a lot more visible for farmers,” said Dr Benter. “Through those workshops we’ll show them how they can participate and trial this on their own properties. With major influences being Kasey Chambers, The Dixie Chicks, Cold Chisel and Shania Twain, Clancy developed a love for music, performing and song writing. By 12, she was playing solo and with bands in Central Western venues. Clancy has travelled widely and performed on Australian country’s biggest stages including CMC Rocks, the Gympie Muster, Tamworth Country Music Festival, Sydney Country Music Festival and Caboolture’s Urban Country Music Festival. Are you impressed yet? She has also won the 2015 Aristocrat Country Entertainer of the Year and was a grand finalist at the 2016 Gympie Muster Maton Talent Search. Her debut EP is self-written. That’s right, Old Saint Nick will be arriving in Orange this Saturday! — JONATHAN ROE —

Summer Street will be closed for traffic between 9.45 and 10.15 to make way for Santa’s arrival. And with Mrs Claus by his side, Santa’s reindeer sleigh (pulled by real live reindeer!) will make its way from Lords Place to the front entrance of the newly renovated Orange City Centre. The procession will be led by the Canobolas Pipe band, with Santa and cohort making a lap of the Orange City Centre before settling into Santa’s grotto in the new food hall. “Everything is just a bit bigger than last year, which is pretty exciting!” said Orange City Centre Marketing Manager, Hannah Bor. “So the whole of Summer Street, from Lords Place to Anson Street, is going to be closed for the parade. We’ll have Santa and Mrs Claus, Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer, we’ve

got Central West Performing Arts, Central West Gymnastics, and the Canobolas Pipe Band are going to lead the parade with a larger band this year!” Following the parade, and for the next three weeks, Santa will be available for photographs ($35) in the food hall. “And this year we are actually providing photos digitally on USB, so it is a lot easier for people. You’ll get the USB to take home straight away, there is no waiting and you can print as many photos as you like,” said Hannah. Santa will be available for photos seven days a week from 10am-12pm, then 1-3pm each day, and from 5-7pm on Thursday nights In the final week before Christmas those hours will be extended to 9-12noon and 1-4pm

“We also have something extra special this year,” said Hannah. “Every Saturday morning, Mrs Claus will also be available for photos. We haven’t done that before, but she was very popular last year, so we brought her back!” On Saturday 7 December, 50 lucky Kids’ Club members will join Santa in the Orange City Centres for a VIP breakfast, thanks the Snack Shack. “The children get to meet and greet Santa while they have breakfast. They also get story time in Santa’s Grotto with Mrs Claus as well and they get an early line up for Santa photos,” said Hannah. “That’s all booked out this year, but make sure you go to our website and become an Ollie’s Kids Club member to receive your invite next Christmas!”

We caught up with the volunteers of the Hospital Auxiliary last week, as they hosted their annual Christmas Stall and Raffle.

verything from delicious cupcakes, slices, Christmas cakes to dolls and baby blankets/ wraps were for sale on the day. The stall seemed a crowd favourite as many swarmed to get the goods! Vice President of the Orange Hospital Auxiliary, Jenny Thornton emphasised this was the most popular raffle that they hold each year. “We also try and do a stall for Easter and Mothers/Father’s Day.” “We appreciate the fact that the community come and support us, it’s very popular with both of the staff and patients alike, they seem to really look forward to it. Jenny continued, “It’s also a day that our volunteers enjoy, when they can’t do the physical stuff, they love to

be able to contribute by selling the raffles and whatever comes with it.” Open every day, the Hospital Auxiliary is made up of both dedicated men and women (roughly 50 volunteers), some who have been involved for over 40 years, while some only months, though each individual has contributed to making a difference not only to the Hospital but the community. Everything raised goes back into the hospital in ways of purchasing equipment, patient comfort, gardens etc. The raffle will be drawn on December, 18 and they will be on sale up until this date. To grab some tickets be sure to ask the volunteers at the Auxiliary, they will be too happy to assist you!

$4 MILLION IN ADDITIONAL FEDERAL FUNDING FOR DIXONS LONG POINT

AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT COMMITMENT NOW AT $20 MILLION The Dixons Long Point crossing project has received additional funding of $4 million from the Australian Government as part of the latest national infrastructure package to tackle congestion and make regional roads safer. The project includes construction of a bridge over the Macquarie River at Dixons Long Point, and the upgrade and paving of the road on either side of the river. It will be a more direct link between Orange and Mudgee. Mid-Western Regional Council is overseeing the tender and construction process, in conjunction with Cabonne Shire Council. I’m delighted with this additional funding, as it takes the total project investment by the Australian Government to $20 million. It’s all federal money. Stage One: Tender This Week Work on the project is underway with engineers from Mid-Western Regional

Council having already scoped possible locations for the crossing in preparation for the calling of tenders for stage one of the work this week. $2 million has been made available for stage one which is the design, bridge location and survey work. It includes a safety audit to identify priority sections, geotechnical work, environmental impact reports on flora and fauna and also an Indigenous participation plan and artefact study. The initial costing for the project was $20 million, so this extra $4 million on top of the $16 million announced in this year’s budget is an early and welcome Christmas present for us. Good Value: Option Not the Cheapest or Most Expensive Although I’ve heard one or two people question the costings, those folks haven’t actually seen the feasibility studies that were completed by a reputable national firm with a great local office, or the range

of different options available - from the very cheap to super-expensive 100 km per hour expressway. All of the different costing options came with benefit costs ratio analysis. We could have gone for a much cheaper culvert crossing but I think we should do this properly with a bridge. The sky’s the limit on how much you could spend if you wanted to. And while the option we’ve settled on is not the cheapest or anywhere near the most expensive, it delivers a safe road and crossing that represents good value for money. Take it From Elvis: It’s Now or Never One idea that has been suggested is a dam at the site with a road on top of the wall. While I think this may have a lot of merit, the reality is that the NSW Government, which is responsible for dams, has not put the site forward as a priority and even if they did it would take years for a feasibility

study to be completed (look how long the Needles and Cranky Rock proposals took). Even then it may not stack up. By that time the government could have changed and our $20 million lost forever. People have been trying to get this road built for 160 years. Until now, nobody has been able to get funding for it. So while we have the $20 million and while we’re in government, I think we need to get cracking and get it done. If we put it off any longer, I don’t think it will ever happen. In the immortal words of Elvis: It’s now or never! The size of the funding commitment from the Australian Government should leave no-one in doubt that this is finally happening and if I have to go back for even more dollars during this term of government then I will. So it’s all systems go - I’m all shook up over Dixons Long Point!

PUTTING LOCAL WATER SECURITY PROJECTS FRONT AND CENTRE I recently met recently with the Deputy Prime Minister, Michael McCormack, and Central Tablelands Water staff (CTW) at the Parliament of Australia, to progress proposed water security projects for the Central West region. Also present were CTW stakeholders: Chair - Cr David Somervaille, General Manager – Gavin Rhodes, and Cr Kevin Walker - Deputy Chairman of CTW and Councillor at Cabonne Council. CTW has three water security proposals: raising the Lake Rowlands Dam wall to increase the capacity by four gigalitres; construction of a pipeline between Carcoar Dam and Lake Rowlands; and a new dam wall at Lake Rowlands approximately 2.5 kilometres

downstream which would increase its dam capacity many times over. The big projects like raising the wall at Wyangala tend to get all the headlines but there are a lot of smaller projects which have been worked on that can make a real difference to local water security. We need to be supporting them. Water is typically the responsibility of the NSW Government, and water security projects usually need to have an agricultural element in order for the Federal Government to get involved, which I think we can find with these projects. The next step is for the NSW Government to submit a funding proposal to the Federal Government

through the new national agency, The National Water Grid and I know Central Tablelands Water will be talking to the NSW Government about that. I’m therefore inviting interest from the NSW Government to see if together we can get these projects cracking. I’ll continue to do whatever it takes to achieve an adequate and sustainable water supply for our country communities There is a real appetite for water projects at the moment, and there’s also some serious funding on the table for them so I’m very keen to make sure our region is front and centre when these discussions are taking place and the money is handed out.

We need rain. And lots of it. There is no way around that fact. The drought is certainly being felt by farmers and other local businesses at the moment and there is little remedy without good general rain. But there has been one bright spot in the local economy, despite the big dry. In 2018, visitor numbers to the Orange region were up 18 per cent on the previous year, with close to 1.8 million people making day and overnight trips to the Colour City and surrounding towns and village. And for the first time, 2018 saw more than 500,000

Orange360 recently won Gold at the NSW Tourism Awards for their Extend the Weekend marketing

campaign, which was aimed at getting under 35s out of the city and into the Orange region. More than the industry accolades, Caddie said it is the results of that campaign that she finds more rewarding. “I mean the data was pretty extraordinary— 13 million views to that specific campaign landing page! And then you had a flow-on effect of 50,000 of those went on and clicked through to look at individual businesses within our region, that is pretty extraordinary,” said Caddie. “And that’s the bigger prize to me. On the night it was a huge surprise and delight for us, but it was just the cherry on the top. It was the actual results, seeing people change their intent to want to come to Orange after that campaign.

“We’re hearing more and more people saying they’re seeing a lot more of Orange than ever before on their social media feeds. People are talking about Orange; there just seems to be a buzz! That was the whole intent of the campaign.” Local winery Heifer Station also won gold in their category at the NSW Tourism Awards and are set for even bigger things in 2020 with the inaugural Day on the Green set to draw a crowd of 10,000 music lovers to Orange. “It is a bit of that whole rising tide brings everyone up,” said Caddie. “People will want to get to Heifer Station and then they’ll want to explore and do more… “They’ll come into the region for a Day on the Green and they’ll go, ‘I had no idea how beautiful it was, I had no idea how many cellar doors there are, I have to come back!’”

It’s simple, at 1pm, through the power of social media, NSW schools have been invited to take a break from the classroom and share in a Raindance to get those clouds to open up and send down the good stuff! Speaking with St Joseph’s CPS Blayney School Captains Kade and Zara, they said, “We will play music and live stream us dancing and it

will be posted on Facebook, we are hoping we can get rain and get rid of all the dust and get us out of the drought.” With a whole school effort led by the Year Six student initiative, they’ve chosen their song and are in the midst of creating their routine. Zara continued, “We called the teacher organising the event and spoke to the school captains, we

STANDING UP AGAINST VIOLENCE

— MELISE COLEMAN — On Monday 25, coinciding with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women 2019. The Orange community were invited to march down Summer Street to recognise and remember the 63 Australian women and 21 children who have lost their lives to violence in 2019. Both men and women were encouraged to join in the march, with volunteers holding a card that had the name of an Australian women who lost her life to violence in 2019. The march took place along Summer Street, across Robertson Park, and they gathered on the roof of the Orange Regional Museum to remember those who have lost their lives to violence. Housing Plus, Head of Community Services, Penny Dordoy said, “It is so important that we come together as a community to remember the women and children who have died this year as a result of domestic violence. It reminds us to look out for each other, and to reach out if we think someone needs us.” Well done to all who took the time to get involved and march, what an incredible turn out.

EUGOWRA PAVILION FACELIFT

RECOGNISING CWA It was great to see Sean Haynes and his Eugowra Show Society committee receive much needed funding towards upgrading their ageing showground pavilion. $172,510 will go towards new roof, walls, doors, windows, insulation and wiring. I’ve been lobbying for funding of infrastructure at the Eugowra Showground which will benefit the community immensely, so I’m very pleased with this result.

CENTRAL WEST GROUP It was a pleasure to present Betty Jenkins, President of the Canowindra branch of Country Women’s Association of NSW, a certificate on which is printed the statement I made in Parliament last month, recognising the CWA Central West Group on their 94 years of service to community. the ‘Worlds’ at the Gold Coast. You buy what they call a superpass for unlimited access and you’re on an adrenaline mission for a whole week. There’s a ride at Dreamworld called ‘The Tower of Terror’ which not only punches huge g-forces through you, but gets to over 100 mph (160k’s) as the little tram car hurtles down the track. Our youngest (who will feature in the next paragraph) had been ‘doing the math’ while we stood in the line and excitedly announced “we gonna be in the front row of the carriage!” Much excitement from father, child 2 and child 3, but no joy for child 1, who it appears didn’t get as much of the adrenaline gene as the other two (wife is watching from sidelines with almost all of these activities, by the way).

Are you a fan of ‘the buzz’? There’s nothing like it, in my book. Back in 1982 I remember sitting on the arm of the lounge (too tense to sit on the cushion part) as Allan Border and Jeff Thomson edged closer and closer to the target in the Boxing Day test against the Poms. They couldn’t get there? Could they? Could they? They were whittling it down, run by run, putting on a massive 70 partnership and needing just 4 more to win. I couldn’t breathe watching it. I was only 16 at that time and had never even heard of an adrenaline rush, but that’s what was going on inside my body as I tried to ‘will’ them home to unlikely victory. Then, Thommo got out, and we lost. Not only did my heart sink, but that strange feeling I’d had inside me disappeared as the fast as the catch was swallowed in the slips.

Local community radio station FM107.5 is celebrating new format and rebranding this weekend with live outside broadcasts from Summer Street Santa parade and Cudal’s Twilight Christmas markets. From 8am to midday, this Saturday you’ll find FM107.5 broadcasting live from the Orange Central Square. “We’ll be there next to the Coffee Club and there will be balloons, stickers, t-shirts, we’ll be giving away stuff and we’ll launch on air about 8am,” said station manager Farren Hotham. “We’ll also broadcast the Santa Parade live! We’ve got two of our guys who will be following Santa up the street and interviewing families and kids and all that stuff.” The relaunch celebrations are to mark new station format and rebranding, which includes a new logo, new jingles and more consistent daytime music selection to appeal to a

wider audience. “It’s a historic change for the radio station,” said Farren. “Formerly was a situation where presenters would bring their own music and play it, but what we did was surveys and community consultation with a lot of people about the kind of music they would like to hear… what we’ve done is turn the radio station into a more modern station which reflects the community. “The format changes represent a cross of popular music, classic hits and memories and country interspersed with community information from the on-air announcers.” More community news and involvement has been a priority for Farren, since he took over

PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF COUNCILLORS At the Orange City Council meeting on Tuesday 19th November the issue of Councillor attendance was discussed. Councillor Joanne McRae had asked, among other things, for statistics about Councillor attendance at Council meetings, community Committee meetings and training to be reported so that people considering standing for election as Councillors in the September 2020 local government elections understand the potential workload. In the same vein this column looks at the personal responsibilities of Councillors. Much of this column is quoted directly from the NSW Office of Local Government 2017 Councillor Handbook.

Personal responsibilities of councillors » Work Health and Safety Act 2011 It is important that councillors ensure that they are familiar with the key provisions of the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (the WHS Act). For more information about the WHS Act visit the SafeWork NSW Website. https://www.safework.nsw.gov.au/ » Social justice As leaders of the community it is essential that councillors promote the social justice principles of equity, access, participation and rights for all people. This is consistent with the requirement in the Local Government Act 1993 for councils’ Community Strategic Plans and Community Engagement Strategies to be based on social justice principles. Social justice for local government means a commitment to ensuring: • EQUITY - there is fairness in the distribution of resources • RIGHTS - rights are recognised and promoted • ACCESS - people have fairer access to the economic resources and services essential to meet their basic needs and to improve their quality of life

• PARTICIPATION - people have better opportunities for genuine participation and consultation about decisions affecting their lives. The Important Word When it Comes to

Investing There are lots of words associated with investing… diversification, time, growth, income, risk, etc. However, there’s one word that is the standout when it comes to getting results - FEES. The best way for most investors to maximise their returns over the long term lies in minimising fees. The fact is, the less you pay in fees, the more of the money you earn will stay in your pocket, where it belongs. This is all about controlling what we can control, just as I showed an audience last Monday night, as we

looked at just how much difference occurs between paying fees of 0.5% vs 1.5% on long term investment results... we’re talking hundreds of thousands of dollars! One question... do you know what fees you pay on your superannuation and investments? Most people who come to see me don’t know what fees they are

paying… it’s often not easy to work out what all the fees and costs are in total. Dare I say, it’s made deliberately hard to work out… just try reading through a Product Disclosure Statement or finding what fees you’re paying on your super fund’s website. Your financial future is too important to risk being wasted by giving your money away in fees which you could avoid. It seems counterintuitive, but when it comes to investing, the reality is the opposite of the age-old marketing slogan – “you get what you pay for”. Let’s look at how fees and percentages coincide in the real world… We all have superannuation and we are all paying fees on that money. Vanguard has found that the median fee being paid by people in Australia is 1.17%. This means a lot of Australians are paying more than that… and in some cases, much more. You can reasonably expect the average super fund to be achieving 7% - 8% returns a year, so let’s work on 8% before fees. If the fee is 1.17%, that actually eats

away about 15% of the 8% return. This 15% looks very different to the 1.17% people feel they’re paying! This is precisely why fees are so significant. Getting a return of more than 7% - 8% a year is a separate conversation for another time. Vanguard also found those fund managers whose fees were in the lowest 10%, charge below 0.45% in management fees. So, if you’re not confident about what your fees are then now is the best time to do something about it because as one of my heroes, Jack Bogle, famously said, “The miracle of compounding returns is overwhelmed by the tyranny of compounding costs.” As Alan Kohler recently said, “most people don’t know what a percentage means”. Banks and super funds certainly do. As I am often telling my clients, it’s important to understand how the system works so you can make the system work best for you. Fees take a toll on a portfolio. The sooner you can reduce that toll, the better your results will be. It’s been shown that a 1% difference in fees could cost you around a quarter

to a third of your capital over your working life! Everyone has different goals and different degrees of risk they can tolerate, so different people will be invested in different ways… but the science doesn’t lie. On a like-for-like basis, when we compare apples with apples, fees are the key. There has now been countless research conducted in this area and it’s been demonstrated repeatedly that an investment fund’s fees are the most reliable predictor of its future performance, with low-cost funds delivering above-average performance relative to similar funds … over EVERY time period examined. Fees are one of the few things we can have direct control over and showing my clients the long-term benefits of getting their money in to low cost, diversified investments, both inside and outside super, is one of the most satisfying parts of my job. The University of the 3rd Age (U3A) launched their most recent their 28th edition of “The Moving Finger” with a lunch at the Robin Hood on Thursday November 21st. The first edition was launched in 1992. The book contains a variety of writing styles and items from the Orange U3A creative writing class, was edited by Ann Cummings and Rochelle Monaghan. Approximately 20 people were in attendance when Barry Devlin launched the book.

CELEBRATE THE START OF SUMMER WITH STEEL CITY SUE AND WHOA MULE AT THE CON The JAM Orange Spring/Summer concert series wraps up this Sunday with Steel City Sue and Whoa Mule. Steel City Sue is Newcastle singer, fiddle player and songwriter Su Morley. Morley’s fiddle playing has evolved from playing Australian bush music into a sound built from her explorations of the southern-US traditions of Old Time and Cajun music. Her many visits to Louisiana and the Appalachian mountain states have honed her old time, bluesy and melodic style. Her album Boomtown, released in 2018, was recorded with US touring act Truckstop Honeymoon at their Ninth Ward Pickin’ Parlour in Lawrence Kansas USA. It is a collection of songs written in and about the coal country of Newcastle and the Hunter Valley and range from rootsy fiddle-driven ones, and the songwriterfolk tracks through to the more electric arrangements. All songs are whimsical, heartfelt, cynical and at times political —a window into a life deeply involved in a real place in time. Ben Pollet s How I Get My Kick

Gichin Funakoshi, known as the “father of modern karate” taught that the ultimate aim for the marital artist was not victory or defeat, but rather the perfection of the character of its participants.

or Pollet’s Martial Arts instructor Kyoshi Ben Pollett it is a philosophy he has come to appreciate more the longer he trains. “After 38 years non-stop training in martial arts, I still think of myself as a beginner. Even after 38 years of experience, I’m still learning,” says Ben. “Do I remember any of these trophies?” he says, indicating the shelves packed with trophies on the wall of his Orange dojo. “Ultimately, all those tournaments, it was just building character. Teaching me to overcome fear and overcome adversity. Teaching me to stay focused and work for something that I want. And teaching me not to give up; that is ultimately what it is about.” Ben’s father Ian Pollet is also a life-long martial artist. Originally from South Africa, Ian Pollet began training wrestling and boxing before finding karate. He was inducted into the Australasian Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 1997 and today is an 8th Dan Black Belt operating a successful chain of highly regarded martial arts schools. “I never thought at any stage that I was not going

to do martial arts,” says Ben. “Growing up, I was always the little guy under all the older fighters. My father was a fighter himself at that stage and his team was going around fighting all over the place and I was following them everywhere and wanting to be like them and now I’ve done it my whole life.” In fact, Ben remembers, at a young age, telling a teacher he would be a “professional karate guy” with his own dojo, a dream he is happy to be living today. “When you believe in your dream and stick to your guns and don’t lose focus it will happen. As long as you are passionate and give it all you’ve got,” he says. Ben had his first fight in competition at just five years old and said he loved testing his skill against an opponent. But today he is more interested in putting into practice the philosophical lessons learned from his art. “I’ve fought all over the world in all different places and now I’m not competing so much anymore, I’m more competing with myself, a daily competition to be the best that I can,” he says. “I use it now to keep me balanced, keep me healthy,

This was an era before power tools were used and the two men worked with traditional saws and hammers.

It makes you a better man and able to teach people from your experience.” These days Ben spends most of his time in the Orange Dojo, sometimes up to 10 hours a day, sharing his knowledge with the next generation of young martial artists. “I’ve enjoyed my day in the sun, now it is the new guys, it is their time you know — they can go out and win things and learn things about themselves like I did,” he says. Ben recently was awarded the rank of 7th Dan Black Belt, a grading that was nine years in the making. For him, the rank itself is less important than what it represents about his own character growth. “I don’t train for these grades; I could have a rag on my hip and it wouldn’t matter. I train every day and I do my martial arts to build character,” says Ben. “I’m happy with the progress for myself — I’ve got plenty of errors left, so much — but I know bit by bit I can eventually, if God allows me, to get it all together before I die and that’s good.”

THUMBS UP to the two men who were from Hort Engineering, as well as Chris from Magical Clean for stopping when they noticed a small house fire at my house, if they hadn’t stopped I would have lost my house!

TRIPLE THUMBS UP to the very impressive nursing and kitchen staff of Dudley Private Hospital, Orange. Nothing was too much trouble and everyone was very kind, helpful and efficient. The best hospital stay I have ever experienced.

THUMBS DOWN to the driver who gave the early morning runners a thumbs down. We run on the right side of the road so we can see people like you who try to run us down. Just as cyclists, we actually have respect for other road users. FYI the road is actually available to all of us, if some drivers were considerate and actually slowed down and had a bit of patience there wouldn’t be accidents.

THUMBS DOWN to the Energy & Water Ombudsman NSW advertised that they would hold an Information Day about billing on Thursday 14th November at the CWA Hall in Robertson park from 10am till 3pm. I arrived about 10am to find the hall closed with no signs of any activity although signs were exhibited in the windows of the hall about it. One other person waiting rang the Ombudsman’s Office in Sydney to find out what was going on, only to be told the day had been cancelled and would be held next year. This was a very poor effort, why didn’t they get in touch with the NSW Government Centre in Kite Street and send somebody down to say the day had been cancelled or put up a notice to say so?

You could have condensed the equipment so there was some parks available for the public. Editor: Again, let’s not be so tough on our Council over trivialities. Molong can grow as a town as long as it realises that Molong isn’t a retirement village, there are a lot of young families in and

around Molong who are under 40 and would like better services for toddlers, children and teenagers in the town. Editor: Criticism over one issue like this hardly gives a balanced view and does little to encourage those who are at least having a go.

THUMBS UP to the recycling garbage men who stopped and picked up a neighbour’s recycling bin that had been blown over with the strong winds - there was recycling rubbish everywhere and they stopped and spent a good few minutes picking it all up and setting the bin upright. Sydney garbos would never have done that. Well done and appreciated! THUMBS UP to Nicole at the cash register at North Orange Woolworths who has put through our groceries several times on busy Thursday mornings and is always smiling and friendly and a pleasure to deal with! You are a huge credit to your Company with your efficient and professional manner and your
