The countdown to Christmas is now under 5 weeks so get your skates on if your holiday planning isn’t well under way, that 5 weeks will pass in no time flat. Well, what do you think of the new look Orange City Centre? It appears the general feeling is along the lines of “Wow! It’s great!” I can’t argue with that, it certainly is different to anything else in Orange at this time and can only enhance the local Orange shopping experience. Best wishes to all the new tenants, hope business booms for you, and especially in the lead-up to Christmas.

Speaking of new looks, the new lighting that’s happening along Summer Street should also add something special to our main street and save our city considerable money in energy costs. Our Find Santa Competition is ticking along nicely but if you haven’t entered yet, you only have another week to ten days to enter. Check how to win in this issue. There continues to be quite a deal of interest in my ‘waterman’ from the public, but to date, no interest from anyone at Council or any Councillors. I’m not sure what to make of that but for now we’ll keep watching and waiting to see if anyone from Council picks up on it. If you’re wondering why we or he just doesn’t go along to Council and raise it, the reasons are numerous but not important enough to go into here. The method we’ve chosen is to let them come to us, we believe a better hearing and outcome may result from us taking this path.

...These little guys came into care four weeks ago at 33 grams...

“It’s a lot of late nights and a lot of washing!” said Jane Passer, when asked about what it takes to be a volunteer with WIRES.

ane, who is originally from New Zealand, has now been a wildlife carer for the past 19 years. She has had countless rescued animals of all description pass through her home — not even she knows how many animals have been in her care. “Too many to answer!” said Jane. “Echidnas, baby birds, adult birds, lizards, snakes — I won’t handle venomous snakes, but I will handle pythons and things like that — joeys of course. So a full range of animals, but mainly wombats… I’ve done wombats for the last ten years and I just love them.” On any given day, Jane could have up to five wombats in her care, and her yard includes a specially built secure wombat enclosure, where they can burrow in safety. “I have quite a big setup, which has Colorbond dug into the ground about 1.5 meters, so we have two burrows in the ground, where they live until they are ready

to go out to wherever they’re going,” she said. But when Orange City Life paid Jane a visit, she happened to have some very special guests in her care — a pair of baby sugar gliders. “These little guys came into care four weeks ago at 33 grams. So, very tiny; they are brothers, about 80 days old, but they’ve been feeding very well.” Sugar gliders don’t often find their way in to care, said Jane, as they are normally well looked after by their parents and being nocturnal tree-dwellers, they have few predators. “These little guys eat predominantly wattle; they eat the sap and the bugs that come with the wattle, but they live high in the eucalypts,” she said. “They are not endangered; we just don’t see them.” Caring for the young sugar gliders involves bottle feeding four times a day. “It is quite a big ask, they are on special formula a sweetened lactose-free, nectar

rich formula that is specially made for gliders,” she said. “We then have to also supply them with all their boughs and everything else so that’s a daily thing as well collecting fresh boughs and scraping sap off trees and doing weird things like that, but they are just so incredibly special!” Returning them to the wild is not as straight forward as you’d think, as Jane has to find a way to securely release them high up in trees. Being a WIRES volunteers is not something everyone is suited for, but seeing her animals return to the wild is why Jane does it. “It is a responsibility and it is not something everybody can do, because you take them on knowing you have to let them go,” she said. “They are not pets, you can’t play with them like pets, or treat them like pets. It is just keep them dark, keep them quiet and keep them happy, watch them grow up and let them go… It is what I do it for; to see them go, to get them back to the wild.”

COUNTING OUR BLESSINGS I think it’s fair to say that our world is riddled with problems, some big, some not so big, and it seems that wherever we look there’s problems, issues, conflict or something else for us to fear or worry about. Even here in our own hometown, much of what we hear and talk about is either over one problem or another, it seems we can’t get enough to complain or worry about. Is that helpful? I don’t think so.

The reason I’m raising this comes as the result of several conversations I’ve had with people over the last couple of weeks. One was with my wife last weekend, when we were discussing the mood of many small business owners at this time, and she said there’s no fun in running a small business anymore. I think that’s true. That said, here’s not the place to go into the reasons for that in too much detail, for this exercise I want to touch on a more general issue.

SOPEE I’m from Thailand, Bangkok. I first came to Australia to study English when I was about 25. I was still a student studying Human Resources and I came for a summer course in the Manly area. A friend in Sydney who had Thai Restaurants asked if I was interested in coming and doing study, I could work with him and I did a Diploma in Business through Bridge Business College. My friend from Thailand wanted

to come and study English as well and so she asked me to find her somewhere to stay. I went to the real estate agent in Newtown and that’s when I met my husband Rodney. We moved to Orange in about 2000, because Rodney’s dad wanted us to run Andy’s Coffee Lounge. We opened the Cheeky Barista Cafe probably 8 years ago. I love painting. When I was little I liked drawing and sketching

and when I came to Orange my neighbour taught me how to use oil paints and from that time I taught myself and just started painting a lot. You have inspiration and you want to get it out from your head and you have to start putting it on the canvas. If I go away somewhere, I always take a lot of photos to reference for painting. Doing art makes you feel relaxed and are focused on what you are doing. It makes me feel happy.

My belief is that if people feel good or satisfied with things generally, better outcomes happen everywhere. Happy people do more, spend more, enjoy more and the result of this is a happier, supportive and more prosperous community all round.

I can’t tell people what to think about anything, but what I can say is that if we all decided to look at every issue we face with a more balanced and considered attitude, a lot of what seems really bad wouldn’t look as bad as it may have at first glance. In my view also, today’s media is one entity that needs to take a good hard look at itself. I believe they should shoulder a lot of the blame or responsibility for the way people feel about or view the various issues today. It seems they are hellbent on presenting the half glass empty side of issues with a real passion, without any regard for how that might impact on people’s wellbeing, overall demeanour, even their health etc.

On the other hand, I’m also I feel so much better when I take convinced that if people feel bad time to count my blessings, I’m sure about things generally, overall you will too so give it a try!

Huntley

Next Generation, Poppy and Harry Grinter helped Alex plant the trees

Alex Rezko is the longest living resident in Huntley, she was just six years old when her family moved from Eastern Europe. It was on 11th of the November in 1949, 70 years ago, Alex explains, “On that day, we got peace and freedom.”

“My Father was in the Polish Army and he had become a prisoner of War, he ended up in Germany. He met my Mum there, and I was born there. We lived in camp for a while, before the Australian Government were looking for workers, we applied, and they accepted us. “I still remember entering Sydney Harbour. The Harbour Bridge was there but the Opera House wasn’t, that was my first memory.” Alex recalls their nervousness in moving to a new country, “We didn’t know the first thing about Australia. We couldn’t speak a word of English, which made it even harder. We actually stayed in Parkes, which was the furthest inland camp with accommodation, I had my first Australian Christmas there.” My father was not long after employed as a railway fettler in Huntley, he came across this shop which consisted of two rooms which became our house and still is my house to this day, the house is pretty shabby, but I want to do it up and restore it to what it was. That was my first Australian home, I called it Fettlers House. “I remember the day that we came to Huntley, we were the first non-English speaking in the village, it was a freezing, snowy day, our

neighbours gave us some warmth and we were very welcomed. There was a wonderful community here. “We didn’t have electricity or running water, we just didn’t have money in those days and we never complained about anything. My parents were grateful for what they had, I remember my father saying, ‘this may be a shack, but we will make it our home.’ In Huntley we were surrounded by orchards and a dairy, it was absolutely beautiful. The railway became the most important thing in Huntley when it came through, people wanted to be close by, it carried the goods to Sydney, everything from potatoes and peas, to milk. I always honour the railway because they gave my Father a job. We lived a slower pace of life back then which is expected. My Mum died in 1971, she had the tough life, she had four children, she lived in shocking conditions from a war zone, and living with mental illness. I’d suppose you’d say it’s a story of tragedy, and a story of hardship, but as I am the last survivor, I want Huntley’s history to be told, the heritage is so important.” “Huntley reminded my Dad of his homeland, the agriculture, the animals, the peacefulness-

he was not materialistic. I was a teacher in Orange for 40 years, I retired early as my father was aging and I was to look after him. Whilst I was looking after him, we planted many trees in the village, he really valued them and he instilled that value in me.” As Alex showed me throughout the property, she continued to emphasise, “I want to try and protect this, it is a part of history, people walked along here. My parents planted many trees around here, which still stand today. “I love trees, and the natural beauty of trees. They have become a creative passion of mine. “In 16 years, despite the drought and everything else I’ve planted many and they have thrived, I’ve had the councils help for a few of them too.” Alex estimates she has planted close to 200 trees in the village. Her favourites are either pistachios or liquid ambers. “Every place has a story, I’ve been through thick and thin in this village, and I want to leave behind, the beauty and history in these trees for the next generation in Huntley. “70 years on, I wake up each day and I am grateful.”

Building a creative community — JONATHAN ROE —

A new Facebook group ‘Artisans of Orange’ is looking to link up local creatives and craftspeople

f there’s one thing that has been clear in my time here at Orange City Life, it’s that we live in a community full of talented creative people, but often these creative pursuits are done in isolation and there is little in the way of interaction. For local rosin makers Andrew and Emma Baker and sculptors Eden and Carl Plaisted the advantages of sharing ideas and knowledge became immediately apparent when they began working together and they are now hoping build a local community of like-minded artists, tinkerers, hobbyist and professionals. “We started talking about it in the shed the other day,” said Andrew, “A Facebook group for people in Orange who use their hands to create stuff, because there is a lot that goes on in Orange and a lot of it is behind the scenes and hidden. So this about sharing craft, sharing ideas, because we’ve found there is a lot of benefit in it.”

Orange City Life has previously written about brother Eden and Carl Plaisted, who relocated from Sydney in February to start their sculpture and design business. And we recently spoke with Andrew and Emma Baker, whose Leatherwood Rosin is prized by string players the world over. But with Andrew and Emma’s rosin business growing, they recently began employing Eden parttime and found they had much to share and help each other. “When I started working with these two, we were talking about solving a problem and I’d give them a different perspective on how to do that, which is what Carl and I do; if I can’t troubleshoot it, I give it to him and he trouble shoots it,” said Eden. “You could spend years doing something one way and not even knowing that it can be done easier, quicker, better,” said Andrew. “But you see someone doing something similar and you just suddenly realise there is a technique you can use for your own thing. So we though

sharing ideas behind the scenes, working on creating something in a Facebook group would be a fun thing for a lot of people.” There are no limits on who can join up the Artisans of Orange Facebook, but if you like to work with your hands, this could be the group for you. “Anyone that loves working with their hands or making bespoke stuff or crafty stuff or niche market products,” said Eden. “Even winemakers and foodie types,” said Andrew. “Sculptor, potters, painters, drawers… anyone who takes something and turns it into something that has a use or a function or an artistic beauty.” If the group gets going, Eden said they might even look at informal meet-ups and possibly more in the future. “We are not really sure where this will head, but two years down the tack maybe there is enough momentum that we can do a seasonal market for everyone to trot up with their wares … who knows?”

Inside each box a child will find something to wear, something to love, something special, something for school, something to play with and something for personal hygiene. Volunteer of 20 years, Robyn mentioned she has been a part of a ‘Distribution Trip’

which meant she got to witness first-hand the children’s reactions. “You can see that they get so excited, the children are sitting in their rows of their classes at school, the boxes are handed to them, they are explained that they have to sit and wait, once everyone has their boxes, they count down in their local language 3,2,1 and then they open their boxes, there are screams of delight, great big smiles, the kids are trying on their hats, their scarves, cuddling toys, blowing whistles, holding up clothes, just talking about it I get tingles down my spine,” Robyn smiled. “It’s a very

exciting time, you ever see the parents who are on the outside getting excited.” 20 volunteers have been giving their time alongside the help of the 2nd Orange Scouts and Cubs, giving their time to pack boxes. “We are very grateful for all of the help from Orange and surrounding districts, we wouldn’t be able to do it if we didn’t have volunteers and people donating items.” Donations are happily accepted year-round, if you would like to donate please contact Robyn on 0427 653 431. Central West Animal Rescue Orange Branch (CWAR) need our help during their busiest time of year, the Christmas period. With 62 animals already in foster care, President of the CWAR Orange Branch, Jasmine Smart explained, “We owe $5,000 in vet bills, and are looking at another $16,000 on top of that with the foster kids [animals] that we already have.” In the hope to ease the financial burden, CWAR have five different fundraising activities kicking off from this weekend, in the lead up to Christmas. From each event, all proceeds will go towards the CWAR foster animals vet work and overheads including food, bedding, flea/ worming etc. “We are as strong as the community that holds us up. We make no money in rescue; we rely on community donations. When the community get behind us it gives us some breathing space, and we can focus on the animals, rescue is constantly reactive, you

are living day by day. “It’s also becoming popular for people buy a puppy for Christmas, we encourage them to really understand that it is a life commitment, don’t just buy one because they are cute, seriously think about purchasing a puppy for life. Bloomfield Medical opens for business On Monday, the GPs at the Bloomfield Medical Centre will see their very first patients, with the private practice opening its doors fifteen months after construction of the centre got underway.

he brand-new private practice, located on the second floor of the Bloomfield Medical Centre, will open for business although construction work is ongoing in other parts of the building. Once complete, the practice will have rooms for 20 GPs, along with practice nurses and administration staff. Dr Sue Boyer, Dr Gabrielle Staniforth, Dr Deborah Heron will commence work on Monday, with more GPs scheduled to start after Christmas. Originally from Dubbo, Dr Sue Boyer trained

and practiced medicine in South Australia before relocating to Orange two years ago. Dr Gabrielle Staniforth did her internship and residency at Orange Hospital and spent five years there working in emergency and obstetrics, before training in general practice. Dr Deborah Herron first came to Orange in 1997 where she completed her training and worked as a GP in a number of local practices. “We’re very excited to be part of this brandnew fresh innovative modern facility,” said Dr Staniforth. “It is beautiful and there is nothing like it in Orange.” Along with the medical practice, the

completed Bloomfield Medical Centre will host specialist rooms, a private hospital, allied health service, pharmacy, imaging services and coffee shop. “The convenience of having everything in the building, having a coffee shop on site is an advantage and parking… Everything is brand new, open and light — aesthetically, it is very pleasing to not only work here, but be here as a patient,” said Dr Staniforth. “Even with a month to go before the event we’ve got about 40 people who have pre-registered. We have people coming from Canberra, Sydney, Newcastle — people travel a long way for these events!” The tournament is being held at the Orange ExServices Club and will have the capacity for 80 players to participate, making it one of the biggest qualifiers in the state, said Nic. “People wouldn’t think that a trading card game can attract people from all over but if you win the Oceanic Championships, you get a paid trip overseas to represent the country,” said Nic. “Plus, it’s a great way for people to interact as well. We are a little excited for the warmer weather so, we wanted to inspire you to get out of the house and explore what our wonderful region has to offer. The Answers have been compiled, the results are in, here’s what our locals have to say;

Can you nail down the single greatest moment in your life? Maybe you’ve never truly thought about it. Hi, for those who don’t know me, my name is Paul, and today signals the publication of my 500th column in this mighty fine weekly mag. Regular readers know I’m not in danger of ever winning the Walkley award for journalism, but Bob (the fab owner of the mag) has kept me on for over ten years, so I’m guessing maybe I fit in somewhere between the New York Times and the NT News ( ).

I’ve been mulling it over for a while as to what the content of the 500th column would be, but the answer was pretty easy when it came down to it. Over the years, I’ve written about Turkish Delight chocolates, my extreme dislike of people who use their phones whilst driving, how much fun Christmas is, working in a school (in a heap of different jobs), my love of music and doing a Community radio show, getting electrocuted during the Tough Mudder challenge, and a heap of other random things. But on the big occasion of my 500th, rather than hit another random topic and try to be witty or clever again, I thought I’d retell the best 45 mins of my entire life. I spent it in total silence. I’ll elaborate. Back in ’96, our first born was a ‘vacuum extraction’ birth. Hectic. Heart rate dropped at the crucial time (it was 3am, too) and Dr grabbed the plunger from the wall, attached it to the little blokes head and yanked him out. Stress. Noise. Frantic. All good in the end except for the big purple bruise on his forehead. Jump to number three, he was induced. Mrs waltzed into the hospital 9 days overdue and announced she wasn’t leaving until he was out. Nobody argued. An induction is pretty intense, with things going from zero to 100 in the blink of an eye once the chemicals takes effect. Again, noisy, extreme, but very exciting. Back to baby number 2. The hyperactive one. The third trimester check-up revealed she was wrong way

round, so they edged her back the right way by pushing on my wife’s tummy … only to have the little bugger wriggle her way back to a wrong-way position over the course of the next 12 hours. Hmmm – ‘elective’ Caesarean time. A Caesar like that was done in Dudley back in those days, and what a surreal experience it was. You just arrive at the desk and say “Hi, were having a baby today”, and they take you through like it’s the same as having your blood pressure taken. Total silence in the theatre, apart from the orchestral music playing. The husband scrubs up, puts on a gown and gets to be present while they operate. They kept me up the ‘good’ end, whilst they were working down at the business end. After what seemed like an eternity, Doc says “You’re about to have a baby if you want to come and watch”. And with that he grabbed onto her feet and she slid out. The fizzzzz of the umbilical cord is still clear in my ears. All good. Big first breath, then a wail. No mushed up face from a conventional birth, just beautiful baby skin and a little puff of red hair on top. Then, they took her over to the heat lamp for a couple of minutes, wrapped her up and basically gave her to me. Mrs needed to be stitched up. So … they sent me and this perfect ball of newness to a ward. By ourselves. No-one else there. Just us. Her sound asleep. Me holding her in my arms gently, just looking, for the greatest 45 minutes of ‘alone time’ of my life. At about the 20 minute mark, curiosity got the better of me and I poked her a little bit. She looked at me for just a second then went back to sleep. Not exactly a sign of things to come though – because for the next 21 years she hasn’t been able to sit still for more than 5 minutes! Nobody can ever take that most special 45 minutes away from me. I can’t believe it’s taken me 500 columns to tell that story.

“I think our mission statement says it quite well,” says Executive Director of Arts Out West Tracey Callinan. “Our mission statement is to promote, facilitate, educate and advocate for arts and cultural development for the communities of the Central West.”

rts Out West is one of the 14 regional arts development organisations across NSW. Each is an independent organisation with a governing board, but all are coordinated with Regional Arts NSW. Based out of Bathurst, the organisation covers 11 local government areas and more than 500 artists in the Central West. Tracey took over the Executive Director role 10 years ago on her return from working overseas. “I had just done a stint of work in England working on a big education program there about embedding creativity into education, which I loved, but it was time to come home,” said Tracey, who was born in Cootamundra and spent her early childhood in Canowindra. Tracey grew up playing piano and went on to study at the Sydney Conservatorium of

Music, where she fell in love with another instrument. “I kind of accidentally fell into playing harpsichord, particular continuo playing, which is a very particular type of accompanying,” said Tracey who has worked as a professional musician in a number of countries around the world. Her role at Arts Out West is a varied one and often keeps Tracey on the road. “Sometimes I’ll have a whole week where I’m sitting in my office in Bathurst, but they are pretty rare, most weeks I’m out and about somewhere,” said Tracey, who had spent the day in Condobolin and Parkes, before stopping by the Orange City Life office for our interview. “The first part of the work we do is providing assistance; so whether it be somebody working at professional level in the arts or creative industries or somebody who is a hobbyist, we can help them find funding or it could be giving advice on how to incorporate,

Whether it’s the chance to own your own home, the freedom to relocate on a whim, or to reduce your ecological footprint — the tiny house movement continue to attract attention.

ust this past week, more than a dozen people travelled to Manildra for a week-long workshop on building their own tiny house on wheels. There is no hard and fast definition of just what a tiny house is, but as the name suggests, they are small, usually less than 40 square metres. So, what is it that makes people consider living in such a small space? Affordability for one, says Annette Mayne, who coordinated the workshop in Manildra and has spent the last 15 years working on recycling and upcycling campaigns for councils, businesses and charities. With tiny houses costing just a fraction of traditional real estate, Annette said there are many people turning to tiny houses as a way to escape the rental trap and own

their own home. “The idea behind them is to find an affordable living option for people, young couples, particularly in city areas where they are not able to afford housing,” said Annette. Living in a tiny house is cheaper too, she said, with heating and cooling costs negligible. “The other advantage is that it forces people to consume less stuff, have less belongings and learn how to be more mindful of their consumerism and consumption habits,” said Annette. And a lot of people are attracted to the minimalist lifestyle that comes with tiny house living. “It’s a comfortable and affordable living environment with a smaller ecological footprint because you are using less resources and taking up less space,” said Annette.

“People that live in tiny houses tend to be more involved with libraries, tool libraries where people share equipment. They are more likely to be involved in community garden setups, so it encourages less individual hoarding of stuff and more collaborative community-based living.” Tiny Houses are also an attractive option for people looking to add a studio or second dwelling to their property. “People that might have older parents wanting to move in with them but need their own space… It is a good option for them, because it is built like a house not a caravan. It has a bigger ceiling height and the insulation is the same as you would have in a normal house, you can have a shower and bathroom facilities and kitchen,” said Annette. “And, if it is on wheels and it is transportable, it often skirts around legislation about having a secondary

dwelling on a property, because it is relocatable, so it is classified differently.” Regulations around tiny houses vary from council to council, but if they are transportable, they are generally considered to be the same as caravans. Living in a tiny house is not going to suit everyone, as for most people it requires a significant change in lifestyle. “They need to shift their thinking in terms of their overall lifestyle overall. So, the idea is to not have a tiny house and then have a shed full of loads of stuff. WHAT IS GOOD GOVERNANCE?

What is “governance”? = The PROCESS of DECISION-MAKING, and = The PROCESS by which DECISIONS are IMPLEMENTED or NOT IMPLEMENTED.

Good governance is an IDEAL. Good governance, in local government, occurs when a local council governs for and on behalf of its local community and the wider public as assessed according to certain KEY CRITERIA. Good governance is a special responsibility and duty of the “governing body” of the council, that is, the elected Councillors, who are elected to exercise good civic leadership on behalf of the whole community and otherwise in the public interest.

• Good governance is: – lawful, equitable and ethical – transparent, accountable and responsive – democratic and concensus oriented – participatory and inclusive – effective and efficient.

• Good governance is: LAWFUL, EQUITABLE AND ETHICAL • Decisions and decision-making processes are: – lawful … i.e. legal and fair – ethical … objectively assessed in terms of their consequences – equitable … in terms of balancing the disparate and often competing needs of different groups in the community, including minorities and the marginalised

• Good governance is: TRANSPARENT, ACCOUNTABLE AND RESPONSIVE • decisions and decision making processes are open to public scrutiny • information is made freely available and directly accessible • directly accountable to the local community and the wider public (especially those affected by decisions and actions) • service within a reasonable time frame • ability to adapt to changing circumstances

• Good governance is: DEMOCRATIC AND CONSENSUS ORIENTED • effective representation at the local level • mechanisms for managing and mediating divergent and conflicting community interests … what is in the “best” interest of the whole community • consensus oriented decision making (i.e. managing conflict, actually and potentiality involving all the key players/stakeholders)

• Good governance is: PARTICIPATORY AND INCLUSIVE •p articipation by people regardless of sex, race or any other discriminatory characteristic • freedom of association and expression • ensuring that all groups, especially the marginalised and most vulnerable, are adequately represented with their particular interests being duly considered.

• Good governance is: EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT • Effectiveness = doing the right things • Efficiency = doing things right … - Peter Drucker. • The challenge is … HOW DO WE MAKE THE BEST USE OF THE LIMITED RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO PRODUCE THE RIGHT RESULTS IN AN EFFICIENT MANNER? A couple of weeks ago I wrote about what are and are not matters that decision makers can take into account in making planning decisions. Essentially the difference is between what is in the public interest, and what is a private interest, and that is what governance is about. So, how do councils govern in the public interest so that different, and often competing, interests are recognised, addressed and properly managed?

The public interest is: • the common good or the good of society at large • the “common well-being” or “general welfare” • central to policy debates, politics, democracy … and local government.

In making land use decisions: •T he public interest includes (with different weight and relevance in individual cases): – Layout – Density – Privacy – Daylight/sunlight – Access/traffic – Local economy/employment – Design/appearance – Noise/smells – Previous similar decisions • What considerations should NOT be taken into

account in the determination of an application? Private interests: – History/character of applicant – Loss of view – Commercial competition (e.g. Coles v Woolworths BUT out of town v in town (i.e. vitality and viability of town centre) MAY be material) – Impact upon property value – Restrictive covenants

ONE OF THE KEY CRITERIA FOR GOOD GOVERNANCE IS BEING:

transparent, accountable and responsive including decisions and decision making processes are open to public scrutiny. Over recent times I have noticed that scrutiny is not welcomed by some people in public life, and those of us who ask questions and raise issues are often shunned for being negative or critical and can be treated as pariahs. In writing these columns I try very hard to be objective and factual. It is an important part of a democratic society to have scrutiny and for our public bodies to be accountable. I have seen many public sector organisations that suffer from ‘group think’ and their senior decision makers can get into a siege mentality instead of seeking different points of view, being responsive and thinking outside the square. People in public life need to wear Teflon overcoats and not feel personally criticised. The media is an important part of scrutiny and I hope that my columns help us to get the best out of our councils by engaging with them and helping them to be accountable.

As we get late into the year, we know Santa’s been busy in his workshop for months preparing for Christmas Eve. To do his job well he needs to be super organised! Perhaps we should all be a bit more like Santa when it comes to Christmas. For most of us mere mortals, Christmas is something we usually only start preparing for a few weeks out. That can make things rushed and when we’re rushed (possibly tired and perhaps stressed) we can often start making decisions we’d perhaps make differently if given our time over. I’m married with three young kids, I’m self-employed and just like you, I know just how few hours there are in the day! So, in order to help deal with some of the pressure of Christmas and the risks of overspending, here are a few tips… Set a budget! Set a budget! Set a budget! … this is the easiest part! Pick a number that’s an affordable amount for you to spend on Christmas. Unfortunately, CommSec research in 2017 found 43% of Australians won’t set a budget on their Christmas spending. Once you’ve set your budget, you need to set a plan and monitor your spending. Here are a few ideas that might help over the next few weeks: • Set a time for shopping – Give yourself a set period to get out and get the job done. The big retailers spend a fortune marketing to us to get us to just keep spending more and more in the lead up to Christmas. You need to be smarter than them.

And blokes… c’mon! CommSec’s research also highlighted that 76% of women start shopping at least a month before Christmas compared to 53% of men, BUT 23% of men will leave shopping to the last minute. This is the recipe for budget blowouts! When it comes to preparing for Christmas, Santa runs a welloiled machine. Amelia to Shine AT SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE — MELISE COLEMAN —

Orange Regional Conservatorium student Amelia Bland has recently been selected for the Opera Australia 2019 Regional Vocal Scholarship program, incredibly, one of only four high school students in regional Australia. “I was a bit in disbelief, I hadn’t really thought about it that much, my mindset was mostly on HSC, so it was a bit of a surprise. Now that the HSC is over, I don’t really know what to do with myself,” Amelia laughed. My Grandma was a music teacher, it was kind of presumed that when I was a child I would go to ‘the con’ and learn piano, that didn’t stick,” Amelia laughed, “so when I was in Year 7 I moved to voice/singing. It’s a great way to express yourself creatively.” While in Sydney, the week long program will ensure Amelia receives world-class professional training from artistic, music, drama and language coaches, and spend time backstage at the Sydney Opera

House before performing in front of Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini. “I’d like to thank everyone at the Orange Regional Conservatorium, Director, Donna Riles and my teacher Samantha Bartholomeusz, they’ve really been instrumental- pun not intended,” Amelia laughed, “in guiding me towards this, and through my HSC, and through High School really, I wouldn’t have been able to do it without their support.” “I’d also like to thank Opera Australia for the opportunity, I think it’s very important for these opportunities to be offered to rural and regional students, often we don’t get the same chances as those in the city, so this is great! It’s finally sunk in and I’m really excited.”

On Saturday 30, November the Cabonne Food, Wine and Cultural Centre will become a Christmas shopping hub, with scores of sellers offering a range of hand-made local gifts and produce to put under your tree or fill your Christmas table. The park neighbouring the old C.W. Corden Store will be filled with about 20 stallholders selling tasty food and takehome items. There will be pizza, ice cream, and Asian cuisine, while the Cudal P&C will have Christmas themed desserts and take-home gifts available, said organising committee member, Verity Middleton. And the Cudal Lions Club will be offering pulled pork, sausages and steak sandwiches. “We’ve got full bar service from Pioneer Brewing and we’ve got mocktails as well

From the park, you can make your way into the Cabonne Food, Wine and Cultural Centre, where the old department store windows will be filled with moving Christmas displays. “We hope to be a bit David Jones inspired... There’ll be moving object and interesting things in the window to see before you enter the shop and you get that old department store feeling with all goods handmade in the Central West,” said Verity “The aim is that you can do all your Christmas shopping in one night! And it dovetails into the ‘Buy from the Bush campaign — the furthest retailer is from the Blue Mountains but apart from that they are all Central West retailers, the majority of it all hand-made, so you will literally being buying from the bush. “You can not only come and do your Christmas shopping, but also feel good about doing your bit and buying from the bush!”

The markets will kick off at 5pm, with Santa and Mrs Claus arriving by horsedrawn carriage at 5.15pm. “We will have a hay bale throne for Santa and Mrs Claus and kids can interact with them and have some tea with Santa and Mrs Claus and write a letter to Santa,” said Verity. “We will also have face painting and a jumping Castle, a three-piece band doing Christmas Carols and our giant village Christmas Tree will be ceremoniously lit at 8.30pm, so there is a lot going on!” The markets will be held 30 November, 5pm-9.30pm at the Cabonne Food, Wine and Cultural Centre.

Words of Wisdom with Melise Coleman This week I caught up with the beautiful Dorothy Sloan. “I can’t talk about anything but farm life, because that’s all I knew, I loved it.”

Where and when were you born? On the NSW and Victorian boarder, in Tocumwal in 1926.

What did you want to be when you grew up? I didn’t have any ambitions to be quite truthful.

What are the most important lessons you’ve learned in life? I think the most important thing is to always be kind to people and help those in need.

What was your first job? When I left school, I worked in a ladies’ department store. That one would have to have been my favourite, seeing all of those pretty clothes. *laughs*

What is your favourite childhood memory? Growing up on the farm and having a lovely carefree life. I had marvellous parents, they owned a farm, we used to all buck in and help when it was busy, hay carting and harvest time in particular. I wasn’t particularly clever, especially in arithmetic, but all other subjects I was very good at, I really enjoyed school. What took you a long time to learn? I think to be patient... I was such a get up and go person, I want everything done yesterday *laughs*

Describe yourself in three words. Easy going, and happy go lucky What life advice would you pass along to your grandchildren? To do their best in life, and always consider other people to a certain point, and don’t be selfish.

What are you most proud of? My family, they are all so great and caring. What is something you are proud of achieving? I was always an amateur writer, I had some of my stories and poems published in the Weekly Timeswhich was a Victorian paper. I loved writing stories and poetry, I was always good at that, I had a vivid imagination, a bit like Danielle Steel. *smiles* What did you get up to when you were young? I was the eldest of six children, I used to kick the football with my brothers, play hide and seek, all of that. Who is the person who influenced your life the most? Why? My parents, they always put me on the right track, the right path in life… taught me to do the right things. What is your favourite thing to do for fun now? I love knitting and crocheting, I absolutely loved cleaning my home and looking after my family which was very important.

A NOTE FROM WANGARANG INDUSTRIES In the near future, the Wangarang site at 1635 Forest Rd Orange, will be locked, meaning there will no longer be public access to the Wangarang site after hours and on weekends. Traditionally Wangarang has operated Monday to Friday with very little need for weekend access. Since the inception of the NDIS, the services and supports that we are now providing extend to 7 days per week requiring access to the site at all times. There have been many occasions, particularly of a Saturday where there have been such a large number of vehicles parked on our site that access to company vehicles for staff, would have been prevented by cars parking in front of access gates and blocking driveways. In addition to this, we have had a number of issues over recent years where the site has been used as a quasipublic car park. On one occasion, the electricity box in the front area was damaged which needed replacement and potentially creating a lethal situation with exposure of the electrical supply. Garden bed surrounds have been damaged and requiring repair and a number of other incidents related to property damage have occurred. We wanted to let the community of Orange know, so they can get used to parking elsewhere for events at Sir Jack Brabham Park, before we lock up the site. Orange City Council have increased the number of parking places at Sir Jack Brabham Park in an attempt to accommodate public parking requirements.

M O R F T S A BL THE PAST — MELISE COLEMAN — “It’s a Treat to Eat Good Meat’... do you remember this slogan? It used to travel around these parts quite often. Last week we had Laurie Mackenzie pop into the office with this image he thought many community members would find familiar. The Austin truck used for carting beef from Pinnacle Road Abattoirs would be sure to turn heads now-a-days. The truck’s signage was all handwritten! We were told it was the largest small goods and bacon business outside of Sydney. The business was in Laurie’s family for at least three generations, Laurie’s father owned the company, before retiring around the age of 70, Laurie’s father sold the truck for something smaller. Laurie mentioned working within the business for many years though when his Father closed the business, he was happy, as he needed the change.

As Christmas approaches family re-unions are anticipated and there is pressure that this season should be one of joy and overwhelming happiness. “Happy Christmas” is a familiar greeting. While for most people this may be true, there is much evidence to suggest that this time of year can be the most difficult for many others. There is loneliness, depression and even an increase in the number of suicide attempts. One cause for this is grief. The family will be together but this year there will be an empty chair at the table. The person’s absence will be obvious and deeply felt. How can we enjoy ourselves and not feel guilty? Some churches and funeral homes have begun memorial services in recent years. These have proved to be helpful. They offer some timeout and a place where we can be with others without putting on a false face of celebration. Time is quietly taken to remember the life of the loved one who has died. Having done that people feel much freer to move on and celebrate with family and friends. Orange Uniting Church refers to their service as a “Service of Solace.” The word solace has to do with providing comfort in a time of sorrow or trouble. Those attending this service are invited to list at the door the name of the person or persons remembered. This name will be included in a time of prayer. There is opportunity to light a candle. Those attending are also invited to bring a decoration or photograph which symbolises in some way the person remembered. This will be placed on an unadorned Christmas tree which will remain in the church until Christmas is over. This service will commence at 6.30 pm Monday 16th December. Millthorpe Public School’s bi-annual fundraising event, the Millthorpe Markets, will make its return to the newly refurbished Redmond Oval, on Sunday 1st of December, from 8:30am to 3pm.

With the sun truly shining and Christmas getting closer, the Millthorpe Markets will feature local produce, gourmet food, homewares, arts and craft and fashion stalls across both the Millthorpe Public School grounds and Redmond Oval sites.

The teachers, parents and students of Millthorpe Public School have collaborated to produce a market that has a wide range of quality stalls and delicious food and drink to enjoy amongst the colour and music of a village Summer.

Entry to the markets is by gold coin donation, with money raised at the event acquiring educational resources for the students of the school.

Free car park facilities are available a short walk from Millthorpe Public School, in the grounds of St Canices’ Roman Catholic Churc h, Park Street, Millthorpe. Vine Venture Tours shuttle bus will be ferrying visitors back and forth from the Church carpark to the bus stop in front of the School gate from 9am-12 noon.

I "nag" because you matter Recently I sat with a friend who grieved the loss of a friendship. This friendship ended due to a change in their respective walks. Now, when Christians say “walk” they aren’t talking about a step count but “their walk with Jesus.” My friend continued her walk with Jesus but her friend didn’t. Every conversation she had to help her friend back on her walk was shut down and eventually this lady cut my friend completely out of her life. You maybe rolling your eyes and thinking “why didn’t my friend just leave it alone?” Or “why didn’t she just accept her friend’s choice and move on?” Well, because for Christians this rejection of a “walk with Jesus” is a really BIG DEAL. We “nag” and bang on about Jesus because: firstly the Bible commands us to encourage each other to keep going, and secondly because you mean a great deal to us. We believe in very real consequences for not “walking with Jesus.” So next time you tell a Christian to stop talking about “that God stuff” know you are ultimately telling them to ignore two very important relationships: the one we have with God and the one we have with you.
