Speaking of wives, I met a visitor at our Church last week who introduced himself and his wife a bit differently to what I’m used to. He said my name’s Hugo, and this is my first wife Jeanette. They were an older couple and he obviously took pride in stating it that way. I liked it and he certainly got my attention.

My wife and I saw the movie Last Christmas at Odeon Cinemas last weekend. It was not a blockbuster, but it was a bit unusual and a bit of fun, one with a twist. We enjoyed it.

Over the past few months, Orange City Life has noticed an emerging theme on our local MLAs social media and we decided it was time to confront him about it.

So, given the travelling Phil undertakes as our state representative I couldn’t help but grill him as to where he felt the best burgers were in the wider electorate. But he was hard to pin down. “Out at Trundle, the Butcher’s Brew Cafe, their hamburger was quite good. Bella’s Bistro at Spring Hill — they’ve actually won a Triple M Central West award for best burger! I’ve tried a few on the list and their burgers are quite nice; I know they have a special seasoning mix for their mince patties, and they make good beef jerky too!

“At Parkes there’s Burger Hub. And at Forbes, there’s Isabella’s, we went there last week and that was quite a good burger! Stan’s in Orange, their burger is quite good! We are very spoilt for choice actually…” Yes, we are, but where’s the best burger Phil? “Oh, and the pub at Tullamore has a good burger, quite hearty! And Molong, at the Freemason’s Hotel, I’ve had a burger there and at the Telegraph hotel as well! Manildra; I’ve had a burger at the cafe in the main street too,” said Phil. “They are all pretty good! In fact, I don’t think I’ve come across a bad one yet… I can honestly say I haven’t had a bad burger anywhere!” So, what is it that wins the vote of our local member when it comes to a great burger?

“Good premium lean mince, I don’t like it too fatty, obviously some seasoning, fresh tomato, lettuce, a good bun! I find some of the big burger chains, their bread is sweet, which I’m not overly fond of; I like quite a savoury bread, even a damper bun,” said Phil. “And beetroot, I don’t mind beetroot on a burger, and good caramelised onion, but a lot of it comes down to the meat, good quality meat is the key.” Given his love of the hamburger, we had to ask Phil if his appetite ever strayed to other items on the menu? “I’m not much into the deep fried sort

of stuff, but I don’t mind a schnitzel, a parmigiana, or a steak sandwich as well. Chips, I don’t often eat a burger and chips, usually just get a burger, but if I do get chips, they’ve got to have chicken salt on them and they got to be crunchy! “Oh, I do like vinegar on chips, some white vinegar and lemon juice! A couple segments of lemon and freshly squeeze it on… this is making me hungry!” Us too Phil! Hailing from Orange, Alexandra Wallace, will soon take Poland by storm having been recently elected as Miss Supranational Australia 2019. ler, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Geoffrey Rush. “My mum has been and is still my biggest inspiration throughout it all. Her love and support and hard work to raise, shelter, educate, push and nurture my brother and myself as a single parent is amazing and I know that I am lucky to have her.” Alex was researching pageants when she came across Miss Supranational. “I’d heard of it before and a lot of girls I knew had also previously competed and said it was amazing. When I looked a little further into it, I knew it was a pageant I wanted to be a part of. So, I sent an application in and was lucky enough to be selected. When I found out the owner had got it down to myself and another girl, I couldn’t believe it! After final interviews, I got the call saying they had selected me, and the rest is history.”

The duties of Miss Supranational are to work for charitable causes as well as travelling the world promoting tourism, goodwill among all nations and a healthy image. Along with Modelling, Alex found her true passion whilst studying, working with animals. “I’m currently studying a certificate four in Veterinary Nursing and an executive Diploma in Zoology. I would love to use all of these to go into working with our native wildlife and work within captive breeding programs.” Alex flies out to Poland on Sunday to start the contest which happens on December 6, “I can’t wait to meet my sisters of the sash and the hard-working Miss Supranational team, but mostly I can’t wait to see what great things we will all accomplish together. When a group of driven, likeminded, compassionate people get together, magic can certainly happen.

Growing up on a property just out of town, Alex studied at Kinross Wolaroi before leaving to study Biodiversity and Conservation at Macquarie University in Sydney. — MELISE COLEMAN — The Commemorative Service for Remembrance Day, hosted by the City of Orange RSL Sub Branch at the Robertson Park Cenotaph, saw many community members, local dignitaries, and school representatives gather to pause, remember and give thanks. It was at 11am on November 11, 1918 the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years continuous warfare. We shall be forever grateful to the thousands of men and women who gave their lives. We will remember them.

Knitting Up Good Deeds — JONATHAN ROE —

Local knitters are putting their needles to work for a worthy cause; making scores of tiny hats and jumpers for babies born in poverty-stricken areas of Uganda. Hobbysew Orange’s Patricia Cole said it all began one night when she saw a member of her knitting groups making one. “I asked her for the pattern, so I could knit one and now people have seen me knitting one and have contributed too,” said Patricia. “One lady has knitted 23, I’ve knitted about 20 and another lady has done 13 — so they just bring them in!” Patricia has already sent off 58 jumper and hat sets and now has an even larger pile ready for shipping. “I haven’t counted them of late, but there are heaps more there than last time,” she said. “I knit them going to and from work, I knit them

in the car, I think I could knit them in the dark if I had too!” Patricia said about ten members of her group have been busy knitting the jumpers, with other donating wool to help them. “It is just a basic little pattern… it is just something you can do and it gives you a bit of satisfaction to think you can help somebody out, especially when they are so poor, some of these mums go to the hospital with nothing,” she said. “They always need them; there will always be more babies than what we can ever knit for, so we just keep going.” And it is not the only good cause Patricia and

her knitting group have turned their attention to. “I’ve knitted preemie baby hats, I’ve knitted trauma teddies, we’ve done quilts for Ronald McDonald House so we’ve done a pile of things,” she said. “I have another lady here who knits beanies for the homeless in Orange, she knitted a great big garbage bag of beanies last winter… and I’ve got another lady knitting little tops for penguins, the ones that get covered in oil.” If anyone out there wants to help, Patricia is more than happy to share pattern and get them started. “Come get a pattern or they can donate wool and the ladies here will knit it up.”

OC Life were fortunate enough to attend a very special annual Melbourne Cup celebration at the Riding for Disabled Campus. Set amongst the beautiful countryside that is Clifton Grove, the jockeys sat astride their patient and gentle steeds, eager to get started. Horses and jockeys were paraded around the ring, the applause was constant, and the tension was rising. Finally, they lined up; the race was ran. Trophies were awarded to the day’s winners, with each student getting a

ribbon. Five different races were held on the day between Anson Street and Glenroi Schools, both groups clearly enjoy the experience. We captured Sylvia winning the righteous RDA Melbourne Cup for her winning ride on noble steed, Twinkle. Let’s not forget the fantastic and humble volunteers that the RDA have! Your hard work and efforts brings so many smiles and enriches these children’s lives more than you know and it is a pleasure for OCL to be invited to be a part of it.

Talking the truth of

Despite the overwhelming consensus amongst climate scientists about the effect humans are having on global climate, all too many of our political leaders and the wider community are unwilling to face the evidence and take action to mitigate the worst impacts of our warming planet.

ith so much misinformation on the issue in the public conversation, community organisation Futuring Orange have recruited local experts for a series of talks to present the facts around climate change. Climate Behind the Headlines has featured speakers from Charles Sturt University and the Department of Primary industries’ Climate Branch. “The reason we came up with that title was that on the subject of climate change, often the headlines or the newspapers are the worst source of information and quite often misleading,” said Kate Hook, who has been coordinating the sessions. “We at Futuring Orange Feel quite lucky that we have experts right here in our community at Charles Sturt University and from the DPI, so we wanted to create opportunities for the public to get straight up facts about climate change directly from the experts.”

The first in the series of three talks focused on the basic facts of climate change; what it is and why we know it’s happening. The second, held last Wednesday, looked at the future impacts of climate change. Associate Professor at Charles Sturt University, Dr Andrew Rawson, has spent the past 25 years working in the area of climate change. He teaches a masters program on the topic covering the basic science of climate change right through to policy implications “What we are trying to do here is cut through all of the — excuse the phrase — all the BS that gets put out there in the papers and by politicians and shock jocks and the like. We want to cut through all of that and get the truth out to the general populous,” said Dr Rawson. “This particular series is really aimed at trying to tell people about the scale of change, tell people about the processes involved, that they are real… there is a massive scientific consensus on these issues; we’ve been watching it monitoring

it now for decades and it is panning out exactly as we said it would and projections into the future are pretty dire.” Despite the science, Dr Rawson said there is a lack of political will to face the problem. Solutions are within our grasp, he said, although it requires significant economic change. “To be able to deal with the problem we need to modify quite a significant component of our economy… it is quite doable of course and doable with a very small amount of implication for most people, it just needs the political will to do it,” he said. “The technology is there to make the changes; we just need the will. We have to get the message out there.” The third and final in the Climate Behind the Headlines series will be held at the Parkview Hotel at 5.30pm, 4 December and will look at just what we can we do about climate change to mitigate the worst of its impacts on the global environment. Last week we visited Catherine McAuley Primary School during their Kindergarten Orientation Day to meet some of their new kids on the block. The future kindergarten students seemed to fit right in though teachers were reminded by many of the kiddies, ‘We aren’t coming here for good, it’s just for the day.’ Edie Short was one student who told Mrs Sutton she had been a little nervous in the lead up, “I was a bit excited too, I was excited to see my sister Lola, she’s seven and she’s in year two! Lovin Local SUMMER COUNTDOWN

Summer is just around the corner and that means a lot of ‘this time of year activities’ will be on the agenda for most people. Some will be planning home improvements, others will have Christmas celebrations, while others will be thinking about how they’ll spend the Christmas holidays etc. That gives me a chance to give a couple of plugs to local businesses for help they’ve given me and my wife as we plan similar things. First up, we had a great experience at Inspirations Paint last week when we sought help and advice on a big painting job at our home. Not sure who we spoke to there but whoever he was he was a wealth of knowledge, gave very practical advice and the whole experience was most satisfying. We went there to support a local business and were very happy we did. Next, need to give Michael Borg another mention. Michael’s business is M & J Butchery in Moulder Street and I’ve mentioned what a great person he is before. He showed this again a week or two back and although I can’t say how he did that, I will say that it showed again what a genuine bloke he is. When you’re planning your Christmas meat supplies or if you’re just looking for a quality butcher, you could do a lot worse than give Michael a go.

DROUGHT SUPPORT Andrew Gee MP Federal Member for Calare

So far the Australian Government has committed more than $8 billion in measures to help farmers and communities get through this devastating drought. It’s the biggest drought relief effort in Australia’s history. As I’ve said to the Australian Parliament many times, it will need to be continually ramped up as conditions worsen. Under Australia’s National Drought Agreement, the states look after animal welfare/livestock while the Federal Government looks after farmer welfare.

SOME OF THE MEASURES TO HELP OUR LOCAL FARMERS Farm Household Allowance The Government is making changes to the Farm Household Allowance to help more farmers.

The allowance is a regular cash payment designed to help put food on the table and diesel in the ute in the face of plummeting farm incomes.

Key points for farmers • FHA program extended to four years in every 10 instead of four years in a lifetime • Relaxation of the off-farm income offset and increase of the cap to $100,000 • Lump Sum payments of $7500 for singles and $13,000 for farming families for FHA recipients who have exhausted their first four years of FHA payments, and are therefore coming off the FHA • There will be less effort up front when a person applies. Couples will only have to tell their story once • The FHA has paid out more than $365 million since it began in 2014 Please do not self-assess your eligibility for any program - seek advice from an expert responsible for receiving and assessing FHA applications through the Department of Human Services (DHS) on 13 23 16 or reach out to your local Rural Financial Counsellors.

Drought Communities Support Initiative The Drought Community Support Initiative was announced by the Australian Government at the National Drought Summit on 26 October 2018 and extended at the end of September 2019. The objectives of the Drought Community Support Initiative are to provide immediate assistance to farmers, farm workers and farm suppliers/contractors who are facing hardship arising from the impact of drought in eligible Local Government Areas. The funds are available through: • Country Women’s Association of Australia (CWA) • Rotary Australia World Community Services • St Vincent de Paul Society • The Salvation Army

Key points for farmers • $3,000 per eligible household using a combination of up to $2,000 in cash and up to $1,000 in vouchers. • Help with immediate assistance for farmers, farm workers and farm

suppliers/contractors who are facing hardship arising from the impact of drought • $63.4 million total investment in the program

LARGE CROWD FOR REMEMBRANCE DAY More than 300 people, including a huge contingent of local school students, descended on Robertson Park on Monday for the annual Remembrance Day ceremony. Organisers were thrilled with the turn out and it was a special event to be a part of. Congratulations to the students from Orange Anglican Christian College who not only provided cadets for the ceremony, but a choral group and students who delivered a wonderful speech and duo of poems. This year, we celebrated the 101st anniversary of the end of World War One. We also take the time to remember the more than 60,000 who gave their lives during WWI, and the many thousands of Australians who have perished in subsequent conflicts on behalf of our country.

KIDS ENJOY DREAM CRICKET Close to 100 local primary school students, ably assisted by helpers from James Sheehan and Orange High Schools, enjoyed a day on Wade Park for the annual Dream Cricket tournament last Thursday.

The chilly weather didn’t stop the crowds from enjoying the Neville Show on Saturday. A highlight was the new ring fencing made possible by a federal government Drought Communities grant, which helps stimulate economic activity by spending funds locally, as well providing valuable infrastructure and lifting spirits. The Neville Show received $64,384 for its ring and perimeter fencing under the Drought Communities funding, and also a volunteer grant for new gazebos and a marquee totalling $4168.

Nine years ago, the show was revived after closing before WWII. It’s going extremely well thanks to Show President Kim Wong and the hard working committee of volunteers. Thank you to all the committee members and volunteers for a great day!

In its 7th year, it was fun and games all day, with a steak sandwich and cold ice block and some awards wrapping up the event. I was able to hand out certificates and medals to the enthusiastic participants.

For the greater good I didn’t exactly barrack for the opposition, but I wasn’t disappointed when the underdogs won either. I wrote a recent column about how totally awesome women’s sport is currently. Of special note is tennis and cricket, where our ladies are absolutely ruling the world. Not only are they at the top of the world rankings, but also tops when it comes to humility, pride, inclusiveness, an appreciation of their position and the responsibility that goes with it. Shout out to our world number one tennis player Ash Barty. What a champion, and I don’t just mean because she’s winning. Sure, she just won the season ending tournament in China, and 6 million bucks to boot. But rather than it being ‘all about her’, the first thing out of her mouth was to thank and praise her opponent. She told the adoring crowd how thrilled she was to have been playing her opponent, and how much she respected her. She congratulated the other lady on her achievements and said how much she was looking forward to playing her in the future. What a legend. She’s only 23 and she’s really got it going on. Now, in a real turn up for the books, she’s the one to catch. If she continues her giant killing ways and stays at number one for a year or so, will the media and the public start to shoot down the tall poppy as so often happens in our country? Let’s hope not. Jump to our world beating women’s cricketers. Not only are they the best in the world (by a country mile), but the sheer excitement and happiness they show when they’re being interviewed is an absolute joy, it’s worth tuning in just for that. After the matches they hanging around with fans, grabbing

the microphone and interviewing each other (often chatting to opposition players) and showing their genuine appreciation for the privileged position they’re in. You all know we have a lovely young lady from Orange in the big leagues – Phoebe has demonstrated her cricketing brilliance and sublime touch, breaking a few records already. But more importantly, she’s hanging around with the right kind of people. She’s very grounded, and certainly not going to get a big head, and she has shown herself to be adept and most humble in front of the camera too. I’m sure you all saw the Kangaroos rugby league team last week. They were playing Tonga. The ‘Roos have never lost to them. Ever. Walk in the park. Training run. Bigger fish to fry. Yep, we all know what happened then. The passion that had been building amongst the players from the island nation, many of whom play in our NRL comp, simply boiled over. From the time they took the lead in the second half, they were never going to be headed. They held on for one of the greatest against the odds victories of modern times. Now, I’m as true blue as the next person, but a part of me was a little thrilled to see the Tongans get up. They lurch from one scandal to the next in that sport, safe in the knowledge that we’re the best in the world and the folks will always tune in. A few more losses and they simply won’t tune in. Fickle like that, we are. I hope the ‘enquiry’ into the loss goes a lot deeper and wider than just the 80 minutes of the Tonga game. I hope it looks into toning down the boozing, the Mad Monday’s, the ridiculous breaking of contracts and the associated demands, the domestic violence cases, the silly late-night episodes. Lookout League, maybe we’ll all just start tuning in to those who don’t take their place in elite sport for granted.

The Moopoo Gals — MELISE COLEMAN — As part of their Business Studies course, Year 11 Molong Central School students, Katelan Philpott, Mercedes Oste and Henrietta Pottie participated in the $20 Boss program developed by The Foundation for Young Australians (FYA) and started, their own business called ‘Moo Poo’ selling both 13kg bags of cow and horse manure (fertilizer) whilst donating 50 per cent of their profits to the Buy a Bale campaign. These girls have exceeded expectations and are now finalists for the 2019 Unleashed Awards held at Melbourne Town Hall, on November 14. “To be a National finalist and to be flown to Melbourne to attend the awards is beyond our wildest expectations,” said Katelan Philpott. “We are extremely proud and excited, when we developed our business idea and started selling our product to the local community, it was with the aim of beautifying our local town and helping drought affected farmers.”

Business Studies Teacher at Molong Central School, Mrs Chisholm, “The community and school really got behind the girls’ business initiative, and it’s wonderful to see these young people developing a hands-on understanding of the practicalities of operating a business, while doing so with a social conscience.” Moo Poo is competing in the Local Legend Award category which is open to social initiatives, social enterprises and businesses with a social purpose, that are led by young legends aged 12-25 from rural or regional areas with a prize of $1000. The $20 Boss program is the largest entrepreneurship program in Australia with 50,000 students from 700 schools across Australia having participated in the program since 2015. Goodluck girls! The Schoolyard Blitz at Glenroi Public

Students at Glenroi Heights Public School have an exciting new nature play area, thanks to a Schoolyard Blitz hosted by Newcrest’s Cadia Valley Operations (Cadia).

he Schoolyard Blitz was a one-day event that took place earlier this week, where 15 volunteers from Cadia worked with the students and teachers to transform an area of the school playground. The school recently installed new, natural-based playground equipment, so the Schoolyard Blitz focused on bringing the playground to life, by placing the required soft-fall material for the equipment, developing a path to run through the area and establishing a native garden including natural materials, such as boulders and a tree trunk. Glenroi Heights Principal, Elizabeth Beasley explained, “Our playground is large and does not have many play areas. The purpose of the nature play area is to provide students with different areas and activities to engage them

and allow them to build positive social skills and relationships.” “We are very excited and cannot thank Cadia enough, our kids are just amazed, they are loving it. It’s really nice we are seeing kids thriving in this activity and getting hands on. We’ve had the whole school doing their bit in helping out and we even had some pre-schoolers in too which was fantastic.” This is the first stage of the envisioned playground, Elizabeth mentioning they hope to add a multipurpose court, a new kitchen area, a bike track and a loose parts play area. The school applied for a Cadia Community Partnership grant towards the nature play area earlier in the year. Cadia General Manager, Peter Sharpe, said that while the school was successful in gaining $1,000 towards the project, Cadia’s Community Partnership Committee felt that

there was a greater opportunity for Cadia to get directly involved in delivering the project. “By offering manual labour, materials from our mine site and additional funding for plants and materials, the Schoolyard Blitz has allowed the project to be completed sooner than anticipated and has also given the students ownership of the project by allowing them to be involved in its development,” Peter said. “The Schoolyard Blitz is also an initiative of our Workforce Engagement program, which aims to provide positive opportunities for the Cadia workforce to give back to the community through getting involved in environmental and community programs.” Materials were sourced from the Australian Native Landscapes Orange branch, who kindly provided discounted materials, as well as Cadia and local nurseries.

What’s Coming Up in Orange? Among the business papers for the Orange City Council meeting on Thursday 7th November was the Quarterly Budget Review and Performance Indicators - Quarter 1 of 2019/20. I will have more to say about performance indicators when I cover the Council’s Annual Report that will be available by 30th November 2019, however, this column provides some of the highlights of what we can expect to see the Council achieve over the remaining 3 quarters of the 2019/20 financial year. For interest, it is not necessary to report on Performance Indicators as part of the Quarterly Review. The requirement is ‘the General Manager must ensure that progress reports are provided to the council, with respect to the principal activities detailed in the Delivery Program, at least every 6 months…. Councils may choose to report on the status of projects and activities that are not running to time, quality or budget…. Councils can, if they wish, adopt a more detailed form of reporting. However, they should carefully consider the benefits to be achieved by this and the resources required to compile the reports.’ (Division of Local Government Integrated Planning and Reporting Manual for Local Government in NSW). The report includes Performance Indicators that highlight progress in achieving the strategies and actions set by Council’s Delivery/Operational Plan. Reports use “traffic light” indicators to show the status of each task. I hope you can negotiate your way through the “Council speak”.

I observed of the 272 performance indicators in the latest report, only 3 are orange and none are red. Two of the orange performance indicators concern the Action - Deliver shared cycleway construction program as identified in the Active Travel Plan and in accord with the adopted budget and are Orange because no grant funding was received from Transport for NSW through their Active Transport Program. The other orange performance indicator seems a little odd as Council has control over the budget, so it seems strange to include a Performance Indicator without the budget to achieve it.

Objective: A healthy and active community that is supported by sport and recreational infrastructure

Method: Identify and delivery sport and recreation facilities to service the community into the future Action: Implement the renewal and enhancement of recreational assets Action comment: Council has plans to enhance sport and recreational infrastructure with accessible swings to be provided at Cook Park and Lake Canobolas Reserve, the upgrading of training lights at Brendon Sturgeon Oval and the third of five replacement pedestrian bridges for Moulder Park to be completed in this financial year. Performance indicator: Wade Park undertake subsoil drainage at western quarter of field. Performance comment: This project was not included in the budget for the current financial year. It will now be considered in Year 2 (2020/21).

STATUS: ORANGE

Development of options for new Planetarium and Conservatorium Action Comment: Architectural plans are being refined. In principal, partial funding has been received ($10M). Council is preparing a formal submission to Australian Government for approval of the project. The Orange Regional Conservatorium and the Planetarium Committee meet regularly to discuss development of this project. Performance Indicator: Develop project plan for approved project implemented according to budget and timeframes. Performance Comment: Work commenced on the project plan. We will meet project time frames and budget requirements.

Objective: Work with government agencies and nonprofit organisations to reduce the incidence of homelessness by supporting the need for affordable and social housing

Method: Support agencies in delivering affordable and social housing Action Comment: This is due April to June 2020. Council works with Housing Plus and Veritas House to support the delivery of affordable and social housing where possible given that external bodies are funded to deliver the programs. There will be a meeting with the successful company to commence the delivery of the Centre of Excellence. Demolition of the old greyhound building is to commence in November 2019.

Method: Construct and maintain a road network that meets the community’s transport and infrastructure needs.

Action: Promote the construction of the Southern Feeder Road. Action comment: Works progressing on Stage 2. Stage 3 tender document prepared, designs finalised, and environmental approvals obtained. Stage 4 design finalised. Performance Indicator: Delivery of Stages 2, 3 and 4 of the Southern Feeder Road. Performance comment: Stage 2 progressing; Stage 3 tender prepared; and Stage 4 designed.

Objective: Prosper - a smart, innovative and resilient economy

Method: A smart, innovative and resilient industry sector. Attract and grow strategic investment.

Action: Undertake refurbishment of the Central Business District. Action comment: Project Planning Through Future City is still ongoing and expected to be completed by December 2019. It is envisaged that Future City will come up with a series of projects and CBD upgrade items that will initially exceed Council’s Budget. First Meeting of Council is then February 2020 at which these tasks/projects can be prioritised. Detailed Design and Construction / Delivery will commence following this. Likely delivery to be commence in the 2020/21 financial year with expenditure spread over 2-3 years. Performance indicator: Project planning completed and delivery to budget and timeframes.

Orange High School class of 1979 celebrated their 40-year reunion at Emus Rugby Club on Saturday November 9th. The reunion included students form the 1977-year 10 class and 1979year 12 class. Of the 200 students from the year 10 class 70 were in attendance. A total of 100 people in enjoyed the evening including partners. Dream Cricket Gala Day — MELISE COLEMAN — Dream Cricket was on again and for the eighth year in a row, it gave students with a disability a day out to achieve what they might not have the opportunity to do at school. Dream Cricket is an initiative of Rotary, its aim is to introduce sport type activities to students with a disability who don’t usually participate in sports. In Orange is it organised by the combined Rotary Clubs and Orange City Council. All primary school students from years three to six with a disability, be it physical, mental or intellectual are eligible to participate. Students participated in batting, bowling, fielding, throwing and catching activities adjusted to meet their ability level. Orange Daybreak Rotary Club’s Murray Paterson explained, “It’s a great opportunity to experience the feeling of success and to build up those finer motor skills by developing sporting skills and having the opportunity to represent their school. “It’s a great day for students have an active day, and at the end they receive a medal for their participation.” Volunteers from Orange High and James Sheahan were there on the day to interact and help students at each station. GALLERY 2: ‘Deep Revolt: Arlo Mountford’ | Until 1 December 2019 Deep Revolt is a mid-career survey exhibition of work by Melbournebased artist Arlo Mountford. Laden with references from art history and pop culture, Mountford’s large-scale video installations, kinetic sculpture and animations take a wry look at the artistic canon through the lens of the contemporary. Amusing and strange, his animated films are hand drawn with a mouse directly into a computer. He reimagines both real and created spaces from the art world, digitally reconstructing the interiors of iconic museums or retracing the brushstrokes of European masterpieces well known and loved for centuries. This process allows him to experience art with fresh eyes and unpack its ongoing meaning and relevance in contemporary society.

Place brings together 38 artists from NSW, ACT, Victoria and Queensland to explore the theme of place in their artists’ books, whether a physical location or a place of their imagination. Artists’ books, or book works as they are also referred to, are part of most artists’ vocabulary, either as drawings bound together, illustrated diaries or a response to a place, time, political or historical event, or personal emotion. More than 30 artists were asked to submit new or exhibited work. All have exhibited previously, and many have books in collections both nationally and internationally. Place presents a substantial body of high-standard artists’ books covering a wide range of styles and structures. Exhibition runs until 15 December 2019.

Man of many talents, David Parker, a Blayney local, has recently celebrated his 20th year working at Coles in Orange.

reviously working in the Blayney Abattoir for 20 years, then a change to Pizza hut. Through OCTEC Employment agency, 20 years ago, David began his journey at Coles. “When I first started, I was a checkout chick packing the groceries, then I was taking the trolley down for the customers and would pack their groceries into their car, after that I went into the Deli making pizzas.” “I really enjoy stacking the chickens for the Deli, I also spent some time in

the Bakehouse, making biscuits and packaging them. “I knew my 20 years was coming soon though I wasn’t sure quite when. It was a big shock, Darren arranged everything, my family came, we had a lovely lunch upstairs where I was given my 20 years badge. I ate some delicious pav and I got to take the cake home,” David smiled. “I love working with everyone at Coles, they are all great people.” David sister Ros Hancock mentioned David loved working at Pizza hut making pizzas, “He still raves about pizza hut every now and then,” Ros laughed.

“We cannot thank the Coles community enough, Store Manager Darren Nurcombe had been great all along, he has just spoilt David rotten, and Julie Robinson has also been amazing, working with David in the Deli, she is always there for him to turn to and ask a favour or to ask a question. Everyone has just been unbelievable.” Unfortunately in January this year, David was diagnosed with brain and liver cancer, he is currently in Sydney for a cancer trial which is expected to take roughly six weeks. We wish you the very best David and congratulations on your 20 years!

ORANGE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS 1955 Back in 1955 Orange High School was becoming overcrowded, as this photo of fifth year students shows, and there was a need for a newer, larger school to accommodate the students and teachers. The old school, situated in Anson Street (the buildings were later incorporated into Orange TAFE College) was opened in November 1913. The first headmaster was George Saxby, who worked with a teaching staff of five. Before high schools were established in Dubbo and Bathurst, many students travelled from as far away as Ivanhoe and Tarana to attend Orange High. The new school was finally opened in November 1959.

LAST WORDS We often remember the last things people say to us. They can either be words that heal and encourage or hurt. I last saw my Mum alive two months ago and her last words to me were, “bless you.” They keep ringing in my ears as she died not long after that. As a family we were thankful too that we were able to pay tribute to her earlier in the year as we celebrated her 100th birthday, instead of waiting till she died. Before Jesus left this earth He blessed His disciples with words of peace. He said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27). What words of comfort! What a blessing to know God’s peace even when we are going through difficult circumstances. Not only can we know the peace of God but we can have peace with God because of the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus. Take time to get to know Him, try praying or visit a church, and receive His mercy, grace and peace.

I’m sure if I was playing loud music at all hours they would be the first to complain, but for some reason it’s different when it comes to their barking dogs.
