Rain! Beautiful rain! What a blessing the widespread rain last weekend was for so many people who needed relief. Of course, more is needed but for now, let’s just rejoice for small mercies. Speaking of water, I had a visit from a chap last week who had some very interesting things to say about Orange’s water problems. You can read more about that man and what he had to say in my comment on page 5. Now, one for your Diary. Well known ABC Cricket Commentator Jim Maxwell will be guest speaker at a long lunch to be held at Emus on Friday December 6th. The Put Orange First group is bringing him to Orange as part of a fundraiser for mental health and we’ll have more details for you next week in OC Life. Our Find Santa challenge is now well under way and for your chance to win a delicious ham for Christmas, check out the ad in this issue. It’s not a super big deal but it is a bit of Christmas fun from OC Life and the Put Orange First group, and there are 20 hams to be won. It’s nothing new for someone who does what I do, but I copped a bit of criticism recently for stating my mind candidly and honestly on a particular issue. It’s not that I was necessarily wrong or anything, I was just expressing an alternate point of view, something that’s getting harder and harder to do in this modern age. When this happens, one can’t help but wonder if the time is coming when no one will say anything about anything for fear of criticism, whether warranted or not. On sharing this with a friend, he sent me the following saying – “If you don’t want to be criticised – say nothing, do nothing, be nothing!” How sad, if it’s come to that.

Rosin Recipe — JONATHAN ROE —

Here at OC Life we come across stories in a whole number of ways. Everyday there are emails and phone calls that might lead to something or another and sometime stories literally walk in through the front door.

ut in many cases the next story you write will come from the story you’re working on. It happens more often than not during an interview with someone that other stories and leads present themselves. So it was in this case: a few weeks back readers might remember we spoke with Violaist Stefan Duwe and his Violinist wife Lisa Stewart, half of the acclaimed Acacia string quartet who have made a new home in Orange. In passing, after the interview, Stefan said something like ‘Do you know that some of the best bow rosin in the world comes from Orange?” That is the sort of thing that piques my interest. “Rosin is pine tree sap — pine resin,” says Andrew Baker from his workshop looking up the slope of Mount Canobolas. Andrew is a violinist of more than 30 years’ experience and the man behind Leatherwood Bespoke Rosin. Andrew studied music at the Sydney Conservatorium and in Europe before moving to Orange where he spent eight years teaching at the local conservatorium. He also founded and leads the Colour City Orchestra. For those who don’t know, rosin is what string players use to rub onto the hair of their bows, leaving a sticky powder residue. It is the rosin that sticks and grips the strings when the bow is pulled across it causing it to vibrate. “I became aware there was a bigger difference between recipes than I thought would be the case,” said Andrew, who admits he actually set out intending to prove to himself that it makes little difference what rosin you use. “I approached it very sceptically and I proved myself wrong… you can really enhance the sound qualities of your instrument by changing the recipe or finding the right recipe and that is

really important in our industry because all the instruments sound different, everyone’s playing style is different, but also people want different things. “If you are a soloist playing in really big concert halls you need a really bright, powerful sound, but if you are playing in the second violin section in an orchestra and sitting right at the back you want a softer more gentle sound that will blend — just changing the rosin recipes is a quick and easy way to make a fairly significant change to the sound.” So Andrew set about experimenting with different rosins, which can have different characteristics depending on the species of tree used, what part of the tree used, the climate and geography of where the tree is grown and the technique used to extract and distil it. “It all makes a difference on how it plays on the strings,” said Andrew. “What I did first was profile all the different rosins individually and see how they worked on the violin — what do they sound like, what do they feel like, what were their weaknesses, what were their strong points — and then started to blend them together to see if I could put the two good qualities together into a better recipe…I then realised I could make the recipes better than the general recipes that were out there.” So three-and-a-half years ago Andrew and his wife Emma, launched Leatherwood Bespoke Rosin, offering not only a range of different rosins for different sounds, but the option for fullycustomised rosin based on individual requirement. “…which is our key difference from other brands; someone can ring us and they can tell us exactly what they play and what sort of instrument they have and we can make a recipe that really optimises their playing experience,” said Andrew. “I have clients that have two, three, four different recipes and

they’ll swap them depending on their playing context. People often have two or three different violins that they use for different occasions, so they might find one rosin recipe works better on a particular violin than another.” Andrew’s rosin doesn’t come cheap, but he has quickly built a strong following and his rosin is prized by musicians all over the world. “I’m really fussy about accessories and instruments and this is the kind of thing I would have got if it was out there, so I’m not surprised people like it,” said Andrew, whose attention to detail extends to the way he packages his rosin. “We make [the casing] out of this really beautiful Australian timber and the final product is wrapped in deer leather… so it is a really beautiful product where most other products are mundane, just a little cardboard box with a little cake of rosin. For us, it is about an aesthetic experience as well as the recipe on the string working really beautifully.” The timber casings and leather wraps are all made in Andrew’s home workshop, where he blends and pours his rosin. “The process of working with rosin is similar to working with toffee, but much easier because it doesn’t burn like toffee does. It melts at low temperatures like 35 to 40 degrees, so I blend the recipes together and pour them into the timber casings and we’re done,” he said. The demand for Andrew’s rosin has grown so much that he now employs local sculptor Ethan Plaisted to help him in the workshop. “We ship all over the world; all through Asia, we’ve done the Middle East, Europe, America, South America… It is still young, but going well and we are working hard to push it further.”

onna spent her childhood following the path of many a horsemad girl. Growing up with her horses at her Grandparents house in Canowindra, pony club formed a large part of her life; almost every waking minute was dedicated to her horse. Years later, Donna moved to Mullion Creek with her husband, there, she started a Trail Riding business. “It was a really scenic property and just beautiful to ride through. It was a few years into it I realised people actually needed to learn how to ride properly. Many were riding very dangerously. Donna went on to study horsemanship, teaching and is constantly educating herself. “I like to remain a student, it keeps me humble and it gives me empathy to how it feels when you are learning something, especially a frustrating sport like horse riding. Our education here will never end, we outsource to ‘Kintail’ and a coach comes each week to teach the teachers and help us with our professional development.” 10 years ago, the Ind family made the move to Kangaroobie Lane after outgrowing their Mullion Creek property, soon to be named, Ruby Hill Equine Centre. “We wanted to move closer to town to make us more accessible, I needed a bigger property to breed the horses I wanted to breed and with that, a bigger area to ride around in. With 35 horses at the moment, it gives us the ability to breed and train our horses comfortably.” Now focusing on lessons and activities in particular, Donna mentioned her students range from three years old to 75 years old. “I love it when they love it... I love when they get

that same feeling I get. It’s a really hard sport to learn, so small accomplishments are very rewarding, it takes a long time to learn how to ride. Every day at the end of the lesson, seeing those kids, and the adults, achieving something small that they couldn’t do last week, or they weren’t as scared as they were last week, just makes me think, ‘this is why I do this.’ The kids are just a crack up, they bring me drawings and write me stories.” Donna and her daughter still compete at local Agriculture shows, at Pony Club, Orange Equestrian Club and other events around NSW. Talking horses, Donna explained, “I love how smart they are... I get them... I understand their way of thinking. I find that I communicate very easily with them, I always have... they pretty much fix anything that’s ever wrong with me, even when I was a little kid.” With the knock-on effects of the drought, along with many, Donna is really feeling the pinch. “It’s increasingly worrying, everything has become more expensive, so many aspects have. It’s very difficult to sell a horse for what it’s actually worth at the moment. Students have had to cancel their lessons due to not having the money and we’ve had to give horses away, it’s absolutely devastating. Donna experienced a similar drought when she was a kid in Canowindra in 82’, “I was only 12 and I didn’t understand the impact of it. My kids have always grown up on a farm and they have always been conservative with water, they know the importance of it, and they know how it gets here.”

Donna is urging the community to come out and support Ruby Hill during the drought, “Please come riding, we really, really need your support right now, particularly to get us through this drought.” With Six classes a week, Donna encourages the nervous of nervous to come and try. You can find her on Facebook at ‘Donna Gai Ind Ruby Hill Equine Centre.’ “I can honestly say, in 27 years there has not been one moment that I feel like saying ‘I don’t feel like doing that today’, I am always keen and look forward to the next lesson. I’m really lucky to have turned a hobby into my life, I see myself as a little old lady directing those riders, with my hearing aids in,” Donna smiled.

How We Get our Kicks Alastair George and Basil Baldwin

— ORIENTEERING — JONATHAN ROE — “Orienteering is for everybody, it really is, and I think it should have much greater recognition than it has,” says Basil Baldwin, President of our local Goldseekers Orienteering Club. The modern sport of orienteering involves using a map to navigate an unknown course over various types of terrain. Competitions are held over various distances and can be held in parks, urban environments, forests and bushland. The sport originated in 19th Century Sweden, where it grew out of navigation training for military officers. Basil, who recently turned 80, has been involved in orienteering for 45 years and loves the challenge of it. “It is active, it is thinking, it helps people’s fitness, it is something you can do at all ages and something you can do as a family,” he said “I recently had my second 40th birthday and I’m still doing it and enjoy every minute of it!”

Last week, the Goldseekers hosted Australian Junior Representative and Orienteering Coach Alastair George who visited local schools to give students a taste of the sport. 19-year-old Alastair has twice represented Australia at Junior World Orienteering Championships and is currently coach-in-residence with Orienteering NSW. Alastair’s parents are also both active in the sport. “My parents did it from before I was born and I was just dragged to events since I can remember really,” he said. “I love how it gets you out and about and I love running in the bush… you are out in the wild and it gets pretty intense sometimes.” At the top levels Alastair competes at, orienteering athletes require speed, agility and most of all endurance. “You are running through terrain that’s soft underground, you might be falling over, you’ve got to pick yourself up, you’ve got to jump over logs and

Tractor lovers from around the Central West have helped ensure sick kids get the care they need, raising more than $90,000 for the transport charity Little Wings.

Little Wings is a non-profit organisation that provides free flight and ground transport services for sick children from rural and regional NSW. The Central West Charity Tractor Trek Group has been supporting Little Wings for the past three years and has raised over $300,000 during that time, said Trek Group Director, Nick Clancy. “The group was formed eight years ago with the aim of raising money for charity and we’ve always raised money for sick children mainly,” said Nick. Each year about 30 tractor enthusiasts join the trek, which is held at different locations around the Central West. The only requirement is that each tractor entering must raise

a minimum of $1,000. “So, as you can see, they raised a lot more than $1,000 each,” said Nick. “Another event we have is a tractor marathon… we have four tractors running for 24 hours with driver changes every half hour and that raises a fair bit as well.” This year’s Trek, held 27-29 September, was based out of Dubbo, with the group travelling to surrounding communities and even the Taronga Western Plains Zoo for a photo shoot with the giraffes. “We gave Little Wings a fraction over $90,000 this year, which we consider being pretty good,” said Nick. “The drought has hit the Central West Pretty hard and it blew our minds actually that we went that well.”

The Orange Art Society invites you to a new exhibition featuring the work of members Sandra Wenban and Wanda Driscoll.

Wanda Driscoll Sandra has been a member of the Art Society for the past ten years. She undertook some formal art training at Orange TAFE, where she gained a certificate in Fine Arts. Each Friday, you’ll find her in the Art Rooms with a group of people, gladly sharing her knowledge and experience. Sandra creates her art works using various media including acrylics, inks and missed media. Wanda has a talent for capturing scenery in water colour, acrylic and oils on canvas. She

has been producing works of art for many years and continues to travel Australia for inspiration. She paints tradition and contemporary works depicting a wide range of subjects from the changing moods of the outback to the soft hues of roses and wildflowers. Wanda also tutors at the Orange Art Society and at many other groups throughout the Central West. Admission is free and the exhibition is open most days. If the door is open and the banner flying, come on in! The exhibition will run from 9 November to 7 December.

Club Secretary, Pru Lindfield said, “There was a lot of excitement when we heard the news as well as shock. Every member loves the club and really get behind it to ensure the kids get the most out of their riding journey! “We have very dedicated committee members, both past and present that have built a strong foundation and it is nice that the club has been recognised as a whole. There are countless hours and hard work that goes on behind the scenes that of-

ten go unnoticed, for that, we thank them for all that they do to make what our club it is today. Every rider, volunteer and horse feels extremely proud to be awarded Pony club of Australia 2019.” With 80 members, Cudal Pony Club endeavours to engage riders with new and innovative ideas and skills across all equestrian disciplines as well form strong lifelong friendships. “We offer a large variety of riding disciplines from dressage to cross country along with mounted games,

this year was our first tetrathlon where riders run, shoot, swim and ride. We also hold an annual pony club camp over three days where the kids learn even more skills from reining cow horse to polo cross and even tent pegging. “The aim of our club is to foster a real sense of community and for the kids to get the most out of their horse journey whilst making some of their favourite childhood memories.” Congratulations CPC!

s we prepare to celebrate the holiday season with our loved ones, charity organisation, ‘Share the Dignity’ is once again asking our community to spare a thought for the women and teenage girls experiencing homelessness, sleeping rough, or seeking refuge in domestic violence shelters. In an effort to ensure that these women and girls do not go without, the charity has launched their 2019 It’s in the Bag Christmas Appeal. Share the Dignity Volunteer, Katrina McDonald, “We want to give local women and girls, doing it tough over the holiday period a reason to smile and feel cared for, as well as restoring some of their dignity by providing them with handbags

filled with essential hygiene products, as well as a few extra little treats.” The campaign has a simple premise; Donate a handbag in good, used condition that you no longer use, fill it with items that will make a difference to the daily life of a homeless woman, be sure to include the essentials such as pads and tampons, deodorant, roll on deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner and soap; and add the little luxuries like lip balm and new socks, a magazine, anything that would make a woman or teenage girl feel special. Our local ‘Share the Dignity’ volunteers will collect donated bags and distribute to shelters and charities ensuring that these lovingly prepared bags are available for women and girls

in time for Christmas. Individuals who donate bags are encouraged to pop a thoughtful note into the bag, to show these women and girls that someone cares and that they matter. This is the fifth year the charity has run the Christmas campaign, and Katrina is hoping for their biggest response yet. “We’ve been blown away by the support this collection receives each and every year, and we’d love the communities support to show these women and girls that they are in our thoughts this Christmas.” The campaign will run from November 22, through until December 7 and bags can be dropped off at your local Bunnings store.

Let MES Entertain you! Not even one year old, promotion company MES Entertainment has already made a splash on the local music scene.

Over the past 11 months, MES Entertainment have built a strong following of their Late Nights electronic music gigs and live music sessions at various local venues. “It was just to diversify the community when it comes to music in Orange, I suppose,” said Shelby Jones, who along with her husband Matt are MES Entertainment. “I’ve been a musician for quite a long time and there is very much a bit of a boys’ scene. So, I was whinging to my husband one day, that I’d just love to play a gig somewhere and so he started MES Entertainment.” As well as creating opportunities for themselves to perform, Shelby said there was definitely a gap in the local entertainment scene they’ve been able to fill.

“There’s that younger demographic that wants to go out and have a boogie and have a good time… and we’ve gone into making sure that you’ve got stages, you’ve got different artists on different floors going at the same time, we’ve made it a bit of an event rather than it just a beer at your local pub,” she said. Making more opportunities for female performers has also been a priority. “November is really exciting for us in that we have two all-female-line-up performances,” said Shelby. “One at the Groundstone; an all-female musician line-up [this Friday]. Then two weeks later, on the other end of the spectrum, an all-female DJ line-up at the Lord Anson. We’ll have three levels of female artists playing a whole range

of genres from deep house to disco.” And over the past year, they have been able to build an audience for both local and touring acts, said Shelby. “We’ve been able to bring artists from not only the Central West, but we’ve been able to bring them up from Sydney and Melbourne,” she said. “We’ve got a band coming up from Melbourne next month that are Triple J unearthed artists, so we are starting to touch base with people and they are wanting to come up here and play. “We love music, we love performing and we are hoping to make a more diverse community out here and make it easier for people to come out to the Central West to play.”

Yes! Leptospirosis is now in NSW. This nasty bacterial disease is spread by rats and, even with veterinary help, 10 dogs have died during the outbreak. Please read on to ﬁnd out the facts. Leptospirosis is a serious infectious disease which affects domestic and wild animals and even humans. It is caused by a bacteria - rats are the most common carrier of the disease. You or your pet can catch leptospirosis if you are bitten by a carrier, or if you come into contact with infected soil or water. The bacteria can also be swallowed, or enter your pet via a cut in his or her skin. The Leptospirosis cases reported in Sydney are mainly in the Surrey Hills/Glebe area and including Centennial Park. But dogs that do not travel to Sydney are still at risk, as now the disease has travelled to NSW, it can spread – rats can get everywhere! The strain of Leptospira is serovar Copenhageni. Dr Judith recommends that your dog is vaccinated with Protech C2i, which protects against Leptospira Cophenhageni by two vaccinations, one month apart and then an annual booster. All puppies will be offered the Leptospirosis

Hilary herself was diagnosed with MS and 16 years ago was determined to fundraise for the horrid disease, years later the girls are still going strong with their annual fundraising Melbourne Cup day lunch. Hilary explained, “Because I am really well with MS, I really wanted the money to go to research because, as yet, there isn’t a cure. There are treatments to slow the progression, though nothing to stop

it. There is really amazing research being done at the moment around specific genes involved in MS, though researchers are saying- ‘it is really exciting, but there still is no cure.’ “Over the years we have raised around $78,000 for MS Research. It’s so important because MS research only gets about 2% of Government funding, and the rest is from fundraising.

Monsignor James Sheahan Bursary We are delighted to announce the introduction of a new bursary, commencing in 2020. The bursary has been named after Monsignor James Sheahan, who served the Orange community for nearly fifty years, who played an important role in promoting Catholic education in Orange, and indeed, was instrumental in the creation of our present school. The bursary program is a Catholic Education: Diocese of Bathurst initiative. The bursary is primarily aimed at families intending to enrol their child or children at a Catholic school but who feel it might be unaffordable due to financial concerns, or those already enrolled who are facing financial hardship and may be questioning if they can afford to continue with a Catholic education. The bursary will provide full or partial coverage of school fees, uniforms available through our clothing pool and the Diocesan Capital Works levy. Bursary amount will be decided on an individual basis after consideration of your application. Students from Years 7 to 12 are eligible to apply. The bursary will be awarded on an annual basis. Subsequent years will require reapplication. This recognises that families have changing circumstances. Orange residents are invited to a special evening to hear first-hand the latest ground-breaking neuroscience research on dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, and spinal cord injury.

r Steve Peterson was riding his bike to work at the emergency department of the Orange Hospital when he was hit by a car and his life changed forever. Steve was lucky to survive and spent the next 269 days recovering in hospital, but the accident left him a quadriplegic. It was during his recovery he met leading neuroscientist Professor Bryce Vissel, whose cutting-edge research could make a world of difference to the lives of thousands of Australians, including those with spinal cord injuries. “He’s a professor from the University of Technology Sydney and he’s going to start some research next year on epidural stimulation, being that if you can stimulate the spinal cord below the level of injury you might be able to make connections again,” said Steve,

who has returned to work full-time, despite his injury. This approach has had some stunning results, said Steve, with a handful of patients recovering feeling and even movement. “They are trying to recreate those pathways and they have certainly done that overseas with people who are paralysed or quadriplegic. Some have even been able to walk, admittedly with a four-wheel walker and not for long, but it is early days,” said Steve. And improving the lives of those with spinal cord injuries are just part of the promise of this research, he said. “Things like Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s these are all degenerative neurological diseases just like spinal cord injuries, so the hope is that if we can figure out more about how the spine and brain work, there will

be applications for other neurological diseases as well,” he said. “And that’s important… the impact of Alzheimer’s and dementia or Parkinson’s and the like are way greater than spinal cord injuries, just because of the numbers of people affected are so high.” Professor Vissel, who heads the UTS Centre for Neuroscience & Regenerative Medicine, will be coming to Orange next month to present the Centre’s vision of a future without these diseases and injuries, and what it will take to get there. He is also coming to thank local fundraising efforts to support his research. Steve is inviting anyone interesting in learning more about this work to come and join Professor Vissel at a dinner and presentation on 4 December at the Greenhouse.

Principal, Mrs Mac explained, “We discussed with the children what our priorities were and what would we want to create at our school, the children wanted to update their BMX track, but they also wanted to improve the garden area and make a happy place. So, we decided to create a sensory garden or a feel-good garden where all of the children could be involved.” “We looked at existing gardens in the school and also looked at creating a garden specifically that reflected the five senses to ensure all children could engage in the garden, and so it was a nice place to relax. We have an amazing Teacher’s Aide, Dina Hines, who is extremely creative, she has really been driving the project with garden sculptures and art and has a real passion for the garden.” Students excitedly began researching and designing their different zones. Freya Baker mentioned the first step was outlining exactly what they wanted to do, then came the cone placement, the digging and then the cement.

Student, Michael Stewart said, “I think it’s really cool, not all schools have this, we are very lucky to have the resources to be able to do it.” “It took a lot of effort and we would like to thank our parents and all of the volunteers who gave us a helping hand and took their time and effort to come and help us.” Mrs Mac continued, “It has been a fantastic outdoor learning environment, it has involved not only every single student, every staff member, but our community and we have been fortunate to have support from Bunnings, GJ Gardner Homes, ANL and also the Lucknow Men’s Shed. Its provided the kids with a sense of connection to the land and they are given real life problems to resolve.” “We’ve been lucky to have specialists visit the school to talk to the children about the soil, we’ve had geologists, ecologists, horticulturists, agriculture scientists, builders, so the children have also had the opportunity to look at careers they might like to pursue later on.” Some of the amazing zones in this garden and some of the kiddies’ favourites include; the dinosaur garden, the water feature, teapot garden and fish display. From this, the next design brief they have is to drought proof not only the sensory garden, the other gardens around the

school also. “I am so proud of our school community, every single child has picked up a spade, every single child has had the opportunity to put their personality into that garden, and every child feels they belong here, it’s part of the school and it’s part of them. “Some of the happiest times has been seeing the kids get outside with a wheelbarrow, working together with a paintbrush, that sense of ownership and belonging is really important. “They feel like they have really achieved something, they grab their parents and say ‘come and look what we have done this week,’ that sense of achievement is very important, it’s another layer to our school and has created another really positive atmosphere where everyone’s attitude is ‘One in, all in.’” Every Wednesday, from 2-3pm the entire school community work on the garden, a project that will continue to grow. “I have students asking me can we do STEM all day, every day, and sometimes they don’t want to go home, so that’s really lovely and it shows their dedication to the space. Who knows what future engineers we have at Spring Hill Public School...?”

The consultations will help inform the Committee on the best ways for the Future Drought Fund to invest in drought resilience.

In the meantime, the Australian Government continues to work to assist farming families struggling through this drought.

The Fund will provide $100 million each year from 1 July 2020 for projects that enhance our preparations and responses to drought. The Consultative Committee is particularly interested in hearing from farmers, local communities and industry organisations.

Next week, the extensions to the Farm Household Allowance program to upgrade payments to four years out of every 10, and also provide one-off payments after the four years have expired, will go before the Senate for approval.

There are three foundation pillars to tackle drought. First is to give support to farmers for the here and now. Second is to back drought

This is a vital shot-in-the-arm for our farming families and will ensure more food on the table and diesel in the farm ute to help them get

through this drought.

It was encouraging to see widespread rain fall across the district on Sunday. For some it has helped fill empty dams, while for others it did little but settle the dust. While we can’t make it rain, the Australian Government is working hard to provide as much assistance as we can for farmers and farming communities. As I’ve said to our party room and to Parliament many times, drought support needs to be continually ramped up as conditions worsen. The Climate Fighters I’m totally on board with fighting for activity on climate change, but the cynic in me gets in the road just a little bit. Not to take anything away from the brilliance of the Nobel peace prize winner this year - Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, for his efforts in securing peace with arch-enemy neighbour Eritrea, but I was keen to keep riding the train of teenager Greta Thunberg, as she spoke with passion and venom to the leaders of the world as they continue to take no action when it comes to how we are destroying our world. When Greta said “how dare you …” to those in charge, the world sat up and took notice. She wasn’t just a schoolkid any longer. She’s earned a pile of international awards and recognition over the past two years, but was happy to say “the climate doesn’t need awards, it needs action.” When she held up her placard that said “School Strike For Climate” (in Swedish), the entire world jumped on board.

So, everyone who has attended one of the climate change rallies in recent times is certainly adhering to these words. Bravo for taking a stand. I guess we know the big cheeses aren’t really listening, because until it costs them votes, they won’t. That’s why people glue themselves to the roads and barricade major events; to be heard. Rightly or wrongly, taking a stand means backing yourself.

You know I’m a mathematician and a scientist. That means I know my stats, rely on data, research and calculations when I make decisions. I insist on seeing the ‘proof’ and methods before coming to a conclusion or agreeing to something. From where I stand, the data on climate change is irrefutable. Sorry disbelievers, I’m not with you. I guess we’re all in one camp or the other, you can’t kind-of believe in climate change and global warming, either you’re in or you’re not. I guess it’s like being a ‘little bit’ pregnant.

The cynic bit of me asks the question that if the “School Strike For Climate” rallies happened on a Saturday in the lucky country, do I think that as many school kids would have been involved? Honestly? Probably not. Arguably the greatest cause ever, but if it didn’t involve getting a Friday afternoon off, and missing out on Maths and English period, I’m not totally convinced all those teenagers would have been there. Sorry, cynical for sure, because I certainly know of some extremely passionate and genuine young people who are committed to this cause, and would have marched even if it were Christmas Day or Day One of the Ashes test – don’t take offence you people.

The life-giving rains held-off just long enough to ensure another hugely successful Garden Ramble for Millthorpe over the weekend. Forecast heavy showers didn’t materialise until mid-afternoon Sunday by which time most Ramblers had experienced the eclectic range of 10 town and country gardens on display in Millthorpe and surrounds. “I just thought it was a lovely weekend with a wonderful variety of gardens,” Committee Member Lyndall Harrison enthused. Properties on show ranged from quirky, bush-themed gardens to extensive country estates and English-themed cottage gardens. “I was really impressed with the variety of gardens on display and people can get some ideas for their own gardens from these,” Lyndall said. As well as the committed gardeners whose own plots featured in the 16th year of the Ramble, she was

particularly grateful to the volunteers who help make this community event a continuing success. “Visitors really noticed the community spirit of Millthorpe. It was something they commented on. We had over 100 volunteers, some long-

The show saw an estimated 1200 ramblers with profits going to continuing projects to beautify the historic village which this year featured a find-an-item game for children and a performance from a Sydney-based orchestra. “Spotto was again very popular with the children and a big crowd witnessed the Cameraygal Wind Symphony performance on the Sunday morning. The popular Central West Dahlia Society’s stall was also a sell-out!” Lyndall added. “The Ramble Committee very much appreciates the support from local businesses with donations and lucky gate prizes as well as from the generous and long-standing major sponsors Newcrest (Cadia) and Coates Hire,” Lyndall concluded. Next year’s Ramble will be on the weekend of 31 October and 1st November.

Unforgettable coffee, delicious food and great customer service — that’s Peter Son’s promise when he opens the Leaf Café in Orange City Centre this month.

For Peter, the opening of Leaf Café in Orange is the fulfilment of a dream he has had for many years. In 2011, Peter was looking to escape Sydney and came to Orange to manage People Café. During the next two years, Peter said Orange became like his second home and he pledged to return one day. “I had a really brilliant experience and the lifestyle here… I was really touched, and I always thought one day, if I have a family, I will definitely live back in Orange and now that dream has come true after seven years!” Originally from South Korea, Peter came to Australia on a working holiday visa in 2007 and fell in love with life here. He also discovered that he had a knack for hospitality and took to it with passion. “I’d never worked hospitality before in my country, but once I started working here, I found I really loved meeting customers and found that this is my talent, so I thought. let’s do it,” said Peter, who enrolled in cookery courses and has worked in numerous cafes and restaurants across Sydney.’ “My background is cooking as a chef

as well, but I’ve done every position and I’ve worked in many different shops, sometimes franchises sometimes private, so I have experience in many different types of cafes and restaurants,” said Peter. Leaf Café is a Sydney-based franchise that launched in 2008. Leaf Café constantly work to perfect their coffee and focus on creating menus tailored for individual communities. “I like their concept, their passion so I’m really proud to be opening my new Leaf Cafe here,” said Peter. “Leaf are a semi-restaurant and café. They are really focused on nutritious, good value meals and they roast their own coffee beans and they have a passion to develop the quality of their coffee. I was very fortunate to be offered this opportunity.” While Peter was excited to be returning to Orange along with his wife and two young sons, he wasn’t expecting that he would also be returning to work in the very same location inside the Orange City Centre. “It is actually the same space I worked in seven years ago, So I took that as a sign

that it was time to go back to my second hometown!” It has been a busy six month of preparation for Peter and the team at Leaf Café. He said their executive chef will be putting the final touches on a fully customised menu for the Orange store. “I want to make us known for good customer service,” said Peter, who has made sure their café space has plenty of room so that customers can feel free to take their time over their meals and coffee. “I’ve tried to give more spaces, so it doesn’t matter if we are busy or not, people can come and enjoy themselves and not feel like they should go, because someone is waiting for a table.” With the grand reopening of the renovated Orange City Centre just days away, Peter is hoping to see a few of his former customers once again. “I’m not sure if they will all still remember me or not, but hopefully they will come visit. I have missed many good customers that I served here before and hopefully they will find me and be happy with my new shop.”

The much-anticipated Quest Apartments in Orange opened recently and Orange City Life asked Amanda Spalding to go along and give us her impressions. I was lucky enough to be shown around the new Quest Orange in Kite Street recently by Melissa Porch, the Business Development Manager. I was very impressed with the quality of the conference rooms and accommodation and the large windows bring the light in, unlike with many hotel rooms that are dingy with poor lighting. There are 2 Conference Rooms on the Ground Floor, and secure parking. Quest Orange has free Wi-Fi and 3 floors of accommodation and a terrific roof terrace with BBQ facilities and fantastic views across Orange and to Mount Canobolas. There are 77 rooms with a mixture on each

floor of studios, 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom apartments. All of them have kitchens for self-catering. The studios are the ideal option for people travelling for business and only staying one night. For longer stays on business or leisure the one-bedroom apartments are excellent and have sitting rooms for private business meetings. I have often heard people say that Orange City Councillors move an excessive number of rescission motions that aim to rescind or alter Council decisions and that this results in a lack of certainty for potential developers. For comparison, I have looked through all of the Council agendas for Bathurst Regional Council during this term – since the local government election of September 2017 – and I have found no rescission motions. During the same period Orange City Council had the following eleven rescission motions: 1. 1 7.10.17 Amendment 9 Orange Airport Industrial Park – Moved by: Duffy, Kidd, Munro, Mileto, and McRae 2. 7.12.17 Renewal of membership of Association of Mining Related Councils – Moved by: Taylor, Hamling and Whitton 3. 18.12.18 DA Robertson Park Toilets – Moved by: Duffy, Munro, and Nugent 4. 16.10.18 DA Recreation Facility Wade Park – Moved by: Turner, Kidd, and McRae 5. 19.2.19 Compulsory acquisition roundabout – Moved by: Duffy, Taylor and Romano 6. 19.2.19 DA for Group Home 20 George Wesley Place – Housing Plus – Moved by: Duffy, Taylor and Munro 7. 7.5.19 Donation of $5,000 to the Orange Show Society – Moved by: Turner, Mileto and Kidd 8. 4 .6.19 OESC Swimming Pool – Moved by: Taylor, Duffy and Whitton 9. 25.6.19 Recreational Use of Spring Creek and Suma Park Dam – Moved by: Taylor, Whitton and Nugent 10. 17.9.19 DA for Lantana Place – Housing

I initially worked in local government in England and was a Director of a Unitary Council (equivalent to State and local government combined in Australia) with responsibility for land use planning. I later worked as an Executive Director in Planning NSW and in Executive Management in several NSW councils and have always been concerned about the lack of integration between the Local Government Act in NSW and the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act in providing clear guidance about the role of Councillors in land use planning. When I raised my concerns in the past, I was told that the two issues come under two different Acts and are administered by two different departments. At various times planning and local government have both been part of the same super department, but I am not convinced that this has improved the integration and I have seen some very ‘patchy’ understanding of their role in land use planning by Councillors and the community. In the 2017 Office of Local Government’s Councillor Handbook there are three pages on ‘Land Use Planning’ that start: The NSW Department of Planning and Environment is responsible for the administration of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 (EPAA, EP&A Act), which provides the framework

for development decisions made by local government in NSW. The remaining 97 pages of the Handbook are mainly concerned with responsibilities under the Local Government Act. It is recognised that it is pretty poor practice for rescission motions to be used on DAs unless there are firm, technical, legal, administrative or procedural grounds for

A very useful part of the draft Community Participation Plan is a reminder of matters that can and cannot be taken into consideration in assessing development applications.

Not Planning Matters The following are not planning matters, and cannot be given weight by assessing officers in their decision-making role: • Speculation on devaluation of property or private market fluctuations • Character assessments of the developer, future neighbours, or anyone else • Hearsay as to what other neighbours would or would not be concerned about • Assumed bad faith or non-compliance with road rules or other laws.

It explains that the planning system of NSW is shifting focus to enable more meaningful community participation earlier in the planning process. When making decisions, Councillors must consider matters on their individual merits and not pre-determine decisions. This means that Councillors must not even give the impression that they have already decided how they will vote at a meeting. This impression can be given by what they have said at meetings, or in the media, or in correspondence prior to the meeting where a decision will be made.

— MELISE COLEMAN — Orange’s Anzac Park Indoor Sports Stadium was host to a huge hockey event of late. 63 teams from across the State were in Orange for the Under 13’s NSW Indoor club hockey Championships. The boy’s competition ran from Friday to Sunday, and the girls took the field from Saturday to Monday. Approximately 700 players, coaches and officials were there throughout the competition. Well done to our local athletes, your skill, determination and sportsmanship did not go unnoticed.

This is a view of Coronation Drive in west Orange in August 1955. Formerly known as Cargo Road, the drive was renamed in honour of Queen Elizabeth II, who was crowned in June 1953. The commemorative sign was erected by members of Orange Rotary Club. In 1955 the street was a quiet road to the west with potholes and a few houses dating from around the turn of the 20th century. Sunday 17th November with lots of children’s novelty events and the usual entertainments of jumping castles, trains, merry-go-round, snow cones and fairy floss and face painting. A market will be running all day with all the organisers proceeds going to the Lions Diabetes Research Foundation. Come & see all your favourite market stalls along with an array of food & drink. There will be novelty sporting events for children, a fun walk, a diabetes information and education stand, raffles & more!

Canowindra Gardens These photos were sent in by a reader from Canowindra with a note saying - I was hoping that you would be able to put in some photos from our Open Garden Day last Saturday 26th October in Canowindra. It was a fundraising even for the local High School. We featured 6 local gardens in and around the town. We had visitors from Nowra, Yass, Orange, Parkes and Young. Despite the drought conditions the gardens were looking fabulous.

THUMBS UP to the people of Orange, I have been struggling with a torn meniscus, hobbling around town with a walking stick. The number of people who offer help, allow me to cross the road or just generally caring has been wonderful. A huge thank you to all.

THUMBS UP to the young man (working in the vegetable section) at Harris Farm. He helped me by getting a plastic container with water in it to give to a dog sitting in the back of a utility for some time waiting for its owner to come back. THUMBS DOWN to the couple who dumped their donations outside the donation bin near Aldi on the 27th of October in the afternoon, well knowing that the donation bin was completely full you still

thought it was OK to leave the donations there. Do you realise that your items will not be picked up or donated as you are illegally dumping.

THUMBS UP to Greg at the hospital coffee cart for being a life saver for the staff. THUMBS DOWN to Telstra for lack of service. All I wanted was to buy a sim card and was told to come back in an hour or go to Coles. Thumbs up to Need a Nerd for exceptional customer service and helping me. THUMBS UP to Dr Evan Jones, Dr Charle and staff at Dudley Private Hospital for their professionalism and care during my recent surgery. Also to Susan at Dr Jones’s office for going above and beyond. found my rings in the toilets in the Big W Centre and was honest enough to hand them in to the Centre Management. I can’t thank you enough for your honesty, one of the rings I got back from one of four break ins I have had this year, so you can imagine how lucky I feel, it was a gift from my late husband. Thank you so, so much for your honesty and how grateful I am to get them back you are a sweetheart.

He was on the crossing holding his sign and this car kept approaching him, then just drove around him. I
