It’s a quote that puts the harsh reality of the drought into perspective. Shown on a news piece on the Project not too long ago (regarding Trundle Central School) it’s a quote that hits too close to home... When will it rain!?

fter watching that same news piece, Rochelle Ashcroft couldn’t take the sit back approach.. and what decent Aussie could!? “It was awful to see,” Rochelle explained, “Kids can’t wash their clothes at home, they can’t have a shower, they have to come to school to do most of that.” With that being said, Rochelle began to research the school and the wonderful things they have been doing to make students and families lives a little more positive, also noticing, Tullamore Central School was a mere 20 minutes away, Rochelle wanted to extend the help. IGA’S charity, Let’s Make Better now has a collection cage out the front of both IGA Stores in Orange, for the community to drop non-perishable items to deliver to both Trundle and Tullamore Schools. “We hope to make the lives of students a little easier, with the obvious impact of the drought especially hitting hard out west, we can’t do too much about the weather, but we can help out in another way.” With IGA Orange’s purchase of a new (huge) van, and having been given a generous donation of $5,000, Rochelle envisions to have the van ‘full to the brim’ full of goodies to take west and she needs our help to do it. “We will deliver the goods in December 6

THE GREATER GOOD Given recent times in Orange and the various issues that have been put on the table, one has to ask oneself, whatever happened to the notion of serving the greater good. It seems this once noble ideal is now being overlooked more and more in our society and it doesn’t look like much will change any time soon.

Luke “Combining our knowledge together we formed Galumaay Dance Group and have been working in schools around town sharing culture, dance, respect in themselves and respect for each other, it’s a great thing that we have achieved here today at the opening ceremony of NAIDOC week, we have young ones from as young as two, up to 17 years old.

AND UNCLE RICK It’s all about getting together, celebrating unity and sharing our culture with people. These kids are going to be what drives culture into the future, when we slow down a bit, they will be the ones who come through and keep it alive, I think that’s one of the most important things. We hope they get some inspiration seeing us and seeing kids their age, taking pride and

dancing. We don’t think of ourselves as leaders, but a lot of the young ones do so as long as we are setting a positive example for them, then we are doing the right thing. We find that even the non-indigenous kids really enjoy what we do, it’s a great opportunity to share our culture with them and be proud.”

One recent national issue that has been getting extensive media exposure has been the slaughtering of former racehorses. The sentiment and emotion that has been stirred through this story among people who love their horses has been incredible. The way the story has been presented suggests that gross cruelty is the only issue to be considered, while others may view what’s happening in more practical terms. Slaughtering animals at abattoirs for whatever the reason is nothing new, yet this particular issue seems to want to focus people’s attention on only one aspect of the issue. I would like to see this and so many other issues debated in the media, so as to let people hear other sides of such arguments so that at least the ‘greater good’ is clearly made clear in the mix.

If you agree with me, shouldn’t we as a community, start to think more about what has been going on in this beautiful city of ours and if we don’t like the way we’re heading or some of the decisions being made, do something about it? After all, if all that our decision makers hear are the arguments from one side, they can hardly be accused of making poor decisions based on that. There has to be a way for our leaders to get a more balanced view of community feelings than the system we have in place now. Speaking for myself, I think we would do far better if we adopted a simple strategy that has served me well for a long time and I think it has implications for our city’s decision makers as well. I’ve said before that I have three words that I try to live by - Integrity, wisdom and balance. I find that these three words keep steering me in the right direction when I apply them to important decisions or choices that I make in life.

Orange and the fight

for Irish independence EXPLORED IN NEW BOOK — JONATHAN ROE —

The 19th Century was a period of great unrest in Ireland as the people bristled under English rule. But half a world away, in the colony of New South Wales, those fighting for an Irish Republic found a staunch ally and wealthy supporter.

n her new book, former journalist and keen local historian, Liz Edwards, explores the extraordinary link between Orange and the fight for Irish Independence. The story of the Daltons, rising from simple shopkeepers to build a massive mercantile and pastoral empire based in Orange is well known. Their impact on the city and the district can be seen in street names and the magnificent houses and commercial buildings that remain. But Liz said she always felt there was more to the story of the Dalton family than had been previously been put in print. “In 1988, the Dalton family wrote a book about the Daltons and I just always felt there

was so much more that could be said about them,” she said. “It’s a really good reference book about that family, but there was a lot more than needed to be told about them and their importance to Orange and to the Irish cause.” James Dalton Snr came to Australia from Ireland as a convict, his young son James Jnr joining him after he was given his freedom. Liz said it wasn’t until she began her research that she discovered just how connected they remained to Ireland and the campaign for independence. “They always supported the cause for independence from England in a big way,” said Liz. “They were always very keen to support any Irish Cause, whether it was to

do with famine, or poverty, or evictions by landlords who were mainly English… the Daltons were always there to give money, but to also give support to anything like that.” The Daltons hosted Irish politicians here in Orange who spoke publicly about the cause. And two of the Dalton women married the Redman brothers, both politicians and supporters of an Irish Republic. “I started really just researching about the family itself and then it became very clear that there was a lot of Irish politics and it was very important to record that,” said Liz. “[The Daltons] have that connection all the time with the Redmans and they fought right up to their dying days to try and get independence for Ireland; it was a really

important connection and one that people probably don’t realise.” Liz will be officially launching her book, Wearing the Green: the Daltons and the Irish Cause on Friday 15 November at 6-8pm at Duntryleague. The opening will be held in the Dalton Room and feature Irish music, speakers and light refreshments. BUILDER GOES BELLY-UP-Continued In previous weeks I have outlined the issues faced by homeowners when a builder is insolvent. Issues created at the other end of the supply chain are just as devastating.

TRADIES & SUPPLY COMPANIES Unfortunately, tradies and building supply companies are often left with very few remedies against a builder who has gone bankrupt or into liquidation. They can register their debt with the liquidator, but they are unsecured creditors and must stand in line behind employee wages, superannuation, Australian Tax Office etc in the distribution of any available funds. Often a more common issue is that there are simply no funds. That is, the individual builder or corporate builder has run the company down to the point where there is simply not enough money to even pay the liquidator. Often, on investigation by the liquidator or Trustee in Bankruptcy, it is found that the builder has stripped money out of the company and/or sold assets of the company in an effort to defeat or frustrate claims by creditors. In these circumstances the Trustee or Liquidator can pursue the builder, the builder’s related companies or the director of the company builder through the courts for the return of these monies. However, the liquidator needs funds to pay for its own costs in administering the builder’s affairs and also the legal costs that will be incurred in pursuing the recovery of such monies. If there are no funds, then these actions cannot be pursued. In circumstances such as this, the various creditors of the builder can each put in some

funds to create a “fighting fund” for the liquidator to draw on in pursuing the builder or related parties to recover monies back into the liquidators hands for ultimate distribution to the creditors. Unfortunately, a builder going belly-up creates a huge ripple effect t hroughout t he industry particularly in a regional community such as ours. Homeowners, tradies and building suppliers should be vigilant, take action, obtain legal advice and protect their rights as soon as there is any attempt by a builder to obtain payment in advance of prescribed progress claims or alternatively fails to pay a tradie or a building supplier on time and within the normal terms of trade. Tradies and building suppliers should contact previous suppliers of the builder to check on credit worthiness.

Over the last couple of weeks 107.5FM has broadcast live from the East Orange Village markets, Molong Colour Run, Cowra Show, the Australian National

Field Days and the Night Markets in Robertson Park during Orange’s Wine Festival. 107.5FM also featured in the running for the Community Broadcasting Awards after two of its volunteers Ann-Maree Coyte and Peter Holmes produced a promo for the Orange Show. Competing against two metropolitan stations from Sydney and Melbourne is seen by the 107.5FM team see it as a tribute to its volunteers. These two people have immense talent and rival the best commercial operators in their field, we are so proud of them.

ven as our region suffers through drought and tough water restrictions, there are dedicated gardeners working hard to keep their garden flourishing in tough conditions. On November 9, 9am – 5pm, eight of these varied local gardens will be opened to the public, ranging in style from small cottage style gardens to larger established native gardens. Now in its second year, Orange Open Gardens hosted by Orange Public School aims to bring our community together, instilling joy and hope through experiencing the beauty of our local flora. “Orange Public School are thrilled to show some of Orange’s gorgeous private gardens,” said Committee member Lindy Kay.

“We are excited for the public to enjoy the day out, meandering in the sun, and indulging in gardens usually only enjoyed by the owners. A very big thank you to the garden owners for their generosity in opening their gardens - Orange Public School really appreciates your willingness”. Lindy added that this year some parents and teachers were among those opening their gardens. Enjoy cups of tea, baked delights or a light lunch as you meander through the gardens. A map will be provided with the location of each of the gardens enabling you to explore the gardens at your leisure. And, for a small cost, you can join horticulturist Libby Cameron, a volunteer at Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens and international garden tour leader on a guided walk around the most beautiful streets of Orange.

Plant stalls and cake stalls will be available at various gardens, plus workshops on how to create a worm farm, activities for children, a vintage car collection display and performances from Orange Public School music groups and choir will occur throughout the day. Artwork from local artist and children’s book illustrator Freya Blackwood will also be available for purchase. Millthorpe’s “Ramble” Seven new gardens feature at this weekend’s Millthorpe Garden Ramble with a special performance by a 25-piece wind orchestra.

— DAVID DIXON — his year’s iconic village event involves 10 local town and country gardens fully-opened for inspections, afternoon teas, and

craft stalls. “We’ve got seven gardens that are new to the Ramble; that’s a fairly high number, and there’s three old favourites,” Committee Member Lyndall Harrison explained. Participants this year range from the Mill Green Community Garden, “Roscommon”; an expansive English cottage-style garden with several themed areas; a commercial lavender farm; and a classic 1960s parkland garden. “I love the variety. I think the whole idea is to

enjoy the ambience of the gardens. I like to think of gardening as an art-form,” Lyndall enthused. “A lot of this year’s gardens feature ‘garden rooms’ with particular themes,” she added. The only garden retained from last year’s event is the expansive and spacious rose and iris farm, Eidolia Park. “That’s 15-acres and really is a day in itself.” A special treat at this year’s event will be a 25-piece wind orchestra from Sydney. “They just called up out of the blue; they’re playing at a winery on the Saturday night and said, ‘do you want us to play?’ They’ll be performing Sunday morning at Garden Number Nine, Tremearne (Byng),” Lyndall said.

One of Millthorpe’s stateliest homes, “Rosebank” will also feature an art exhibition by Dr Jim Frazier, camera operator for many of Sir David Attenborough’s wildlife documentaries. “The exhibition is opening on the Saturday of the Ramble.” Organisers are taking a philosophical view of the possibility of inclement weather for this year’s event. “If it rains, we’ll be dancing in it,” Lyndall laughed. We caught up with the University of the Third Age, Orange Writers last week, during their creative writing class. The group were excitingly preparing their pieces for their annual, ‘The Moving Finger’ book, which is to be launched on November 21. U3A’s Rosemary Curry explained, “Its creative writing, so really the stories can be whatever they would like to write about... some are local historical pieces, others are just creative writing. Everyone very much enjoys it. We have worked all year on different pieces and for this book

we choose what we consider our best work to compile together.” Rosemary continued, “We have some great Authors in our group at the moment and they love to see their work in print.. we all do, it’s an exciting time for us.”

The Australian Government has so far, committed more than $7.3 billion to drought relief. It’s the biggest drought relief effort in our history. I’ve told the Parliament that many farmers and communities are struggling with deteriorating drought conditions going into summer. It’s been devastating. I’ve also made it clear to all Government MPs and the Parliament on many occasions that support needs to be continually ramped up as conditions worsen. Even more help is coming and we are going to need it. The National Drought Response Plan has three parts:

3. BUILDING A MORE DROUGHT RESILIENT AUSTRALIA We are building a more drought resilient Australia, establishing the $5 billion Future Drought Fund and by putting the infrastructure in place to help us deal with this and future droughts. •

First, and most immediately, we’re helping farmers and graziers who are doing it tough, right now. We’ve helped over 12,000 farming families, with around $100,000 each, paid over four years. That’s not a loan, it doesn’t ever have to be paid back. It’s there to help them get through. Some other initiatives include: • Helping farmers do work on their farms right now to deal with the drought, like installing new bores, pipes and weirs through our $50 million commitment in rebates for on-farm emergency water infrastructure. • Providing generous concessional loans to help farmers prepare for, manage through and recover from drought that can save them up to $60,000 in interest a year. • Providing tax relief for farmers, with $75 million in taxation measures, including accelerated fodder storage asset depreciation and the Farm Management Deposit Scheme. • Providing Rural Financial Counselling to help with financial planning, mentoring and coaching.

Now in its 18th year, the event started with a march down Summer Street where I joined students from Anson Street School, before I joined organisers for the official proceedings and school awards. Trang living the dream — JONATHAN ROE —

“I said to myself, ‘If I don’t do it, I’ll be thinking all my life I should do that, I should do that’” says Trang Le, thinking back five years ago when she took the plunge and started her now thriving food truck and restaurant business.

ot one to sit still, Trang is now preparing to open a second Trang Hue store in the new Orange City Centre food court when it opens in mid-November. “I’m ready to go, I cannot wait!” says Trang, who has bigger plans still. Originally from Hue, Vietnam, Trang started her first business when she just 10 years old selling vegetables in the local market. Then later selling pancakes on Thuan An beach in school holidays. But when she was just 13, Trang was forced to quit school and work full time. “When I was 13, my family didn’t have enough money for me to go to school, so I started working full time. I was selling pancakes at the school and breakfast like a baguette with bacon and egg and in the school holidays we’d go to the beach and sell pancakes, banana pancakes – I did that for four years,” said Trang, who was able to make enough money to send her three siblings through school and support her mother. But Trang realised that she didn’t want this to be her entire life; she wanted more. “I had no future if I kept going like that,” she said. “I saw on the beach a lot people could speak really good English and they made really good money with the tourists, so I started learning English at night and in the day I go to the beach to sell pineapples and the pancakes.” And when she was 18, Trang left home to try get into the restaurant business in Hue. “My mum was pretty surprised. She said Ok, but you make really good money in this, why would you leave? And I said I want to go to Hue so I can have a good future. You don’t make good money

in Hue, but it will be good for me to get out and learn something more.” But with very little English, Trang struggled to find a job, until finally one restaurant owner gave her a chance. “He asked what can you do? And I said I can do anything — washing up, cleaning, cleaning toilets, I can learn anything you want me to” she said. “I worked for 25 dollars per month working from 7-10 and started learning. Every night I would practice over and over in my head in English, English, English.” Trang’s undeniable work ethic paid off and after a few months she was given an opportunity to work in the front of house and improved her English further. It was while working in a hostel in Hue that Trang met her now husband and two years later made the move to Australia. “My husband is from Parkes and he had a job in Orange and so we moved back to Orange,” said Trang, who picked up work on her second day in town and was already dreaming of opening her own restaurant. “In my head I always wanted to have my own restaurant; I want to share Vietnamese food, especially Hue cuisine, in Orange - everywhere I go!” Her first venture was making Vietnamese beef jerky, selling it online and at the local Farmer’s markets. That lead to selling Vietnamese food at local markets and then further afield. But Trang was still looking for a place of her own. “One night I saw the food trucks in America and I thought that’s what I need! And so then I was

looking all night, until nearly 6am in the morning, not sleeping that night because I am looking at all the food trucks, I thought it would really suit what I was doing,” she said. The very next day Trang called to enquire about a truck and 3 days later was on a plane to Melbourne. Within 8 months she’d brought her very own food truck back to town. The Trang Hue Summer Street store quickly followed, and Trang is now weeks away from opening her second store. She is also busy pushing her own line of frozen ready-to-eat-meals and sauces for home cooking, as well as her jerky and pork crackling. “Now I’m concentrating on the sauces; lemongrass sauce, Hoisin sauce, fish sauce and the barbecue marinade — so if people like our food they can buy the sauce and have it at home,” said Trang, who has somehow found the time to have three children during this period as well. Her food truck now makes a weekly appearance in Dubbo and Bathurst and soon will be travelling to other Central West destinations “We will probably start going to Forbes, Parkes, Mudgee, Wellington, Cowra, so if they are working… maybe we’ll open a shop one day!” With the new store opening in Orange City Centre, Trang is taking the opportunity to expand the menu and trading hours of current Summer Street store. “This shop will turn into a restaurant, and we will be serving Vietnamese beer, local beer and wine and then some different food, extra tables — more special!” The newly renovated Orange City Centre food court is due to open in mid-November.

— MELISE COLEMAN — It’s not every day you are given the opportunity to learn from a three-time Olympian Sprinter, though last Friday, 40 students from Orange Anglican Grammar School were given that very opportunity. World Indoor champion, Australian Record Holder of the 200m and Olympian, Melinda Gainsford-Taylor was the guest speaker for the OAGS Sports Awards night. Before the awards night, Melinda held a Speed Clinic on the OAGS oval. The clinic was not just for track and field enthusiasts though for any child that takes part in an individual or team sport, the aim, to improve their speed. The clinic included speed development for analysis and correction of running technique, technical running drills and techniques in developing strength and stability. Some fantastic form was on show, well done to the students involved, it looked like a lot of fun!

If you haven’t been through the new Best and Less store in Anson Street, it’s well worth a visit. The store looks fabulous and is a big step up on the previous store. Definitely another plus for Orange.

While on smart looking stores, what they’ve done at K Mart too is quite spectacular. It’s an absolute pleasure to browse through with everything thoughtfully and beautifully set out. Not sure how I feel about the checkout system in the middle though, at my age I’m still having trouble coming to grips with the new methods that are being introduced with many things.

It has been years in the planning, but local wine producer Printhie Wines are about to make a significant investment in the region, building a brand-new cellar door and restaurant at Nashdale. ur local wine tourism industry continues to grow, as can be seen in the large number of people who flocked to wine festival events over

the past two weekends. For Printhie this wine festival was the chance to give visitors and locals a taste of what’s to come, as they operated a temporary ‘pop-up’ cellar door out of their ‘Millwood’ property’s historic apple packing shed. Printhie will shortly begin building a purpose-built cellar door and restaurant on the Nancarrow Lane property, which should be open for business this time next year. The building will be licenced for 240 people and take in the stunning views of Nashdale orchards, grazing land and the hills beyond. It’s been a long time coming, says Dave Swift, whose family own and operate Printhie Wines from their property near Molong. “We bought the block here four years ago in November, but it was probably another three years prior to that of looking for an appropriate block,” said Dave.

“We knew for some time that the future of wine tourism in Orange was going to grow and if we wanted to be a part of that we needed to put ourselves where the market was.” It is not a small investment, but Dave said they are confident in the strength of Orange’s tourism appeal and believe the local industry still has a lot of room for growth. “I think it’s just another step in the development of Orange as a region to be honest,” said Dave. Obviously, anything like this comes with risk, but I get more and more excited about it the closer we get.... you go back four years I was far more nervous about it than I am today, seeing how existing businesses in Orange are starting to track from cellar door visitation numbers.” An advantage of being part of a young and developing region is that you can learn from the mistakes and successes of others, and Dave said they have good reason to believe their restaurant will be a worthwhile investment. “The restaurant came out of a sense that we knew it would help elevate our brand, but also for the region, for any region to grow, you need diversity and you need more experiences,” he said.

“And it is also tried and tested; we know from wine regions all over the world that good cellar doors with restaurants do well.” “And it is such a beautiful site, it would be a travesty if we didn’t put a dining experience up there,” added Emily Swift, Printhie Wine marketing manager and Dave’s sister-in-law. “People are looking for places to go and have lunch with a view… there are so many other great cellar doors at Nashdale and by joining them it creates a good circuit for everyone. I think it’s perfect; It’s part of Oranges expansion as a tourist destination.” Dave pointed to the recent accommodation developments in Orange as a sign of the growing potential for the local wine tourism industry. “The Quest Apartments, the Byng Street Hotel, the still continued increase in Airbnb accommodation, the retrofits of the like of the Oriana Hotel… because with that will come better access through flights, which will also bring those costs down and once the airlines know that they can fill seats on the weekend, it will be a benefit for us all.

responses of financial companies to the impact of drought; direct and indirect impacts of drought on businesses and industries; transition and recovery from drought when drought conditions begin to improve; preparedness for future drought events; assessment of current Government programs, temporary relief from state taxes, charges and levies for drought affected businesses; capacity and coordination of town water supplies and further recycling opportunities; and any other related matter. Being Tough, it’s more than just Muscles Mental toughness, it’s the best kind of tough So, we’re out of the Rugby World Cup. Again. Another loss to England. Didn’t even get to challenge the All Blacks. I did feel a sorry for the coach though. Like his methods or not, it’s been easy to see and feel his passion for the game and the players under his wing. He backed them and himself, took the loss on the chin, and then the fickle media kicked him while he was down in the press conference, angling for his resignation. Not much ‘strength’ of character shown by that bloke with his cheap shot question. Michael Cheika showed great strength and resilience. It didn’t work out for you (or our Wallabies) buddy, but your humility and determination earn you respect. Pretty much like the British media and the way they’re hammering Meghan. I’m not a monarchist, but wow, her courage runs rings around most, go girl. Filling up at the bowser last week, I was cursing and whining that it was costing me $1.50 a litre for petrol. Not long after my ‘first world’ rant about price of the gas, I ran into a young lady I know who is wheelchair bound. She greeted me with a beaming smile, asked how things were going in my world and was happy to share a chat about her adventures too. Her condition sees her hands and grip as unsteady, but nary a complaint or frown from her as she goes about her business. I feel very lucky to know this dynamic girl, and she never fails to put a grin on my face when I bump into her. I thought about my little tanty just 20 minutes before running in to her and I was quite ashamed of myself. Sheesh, whinging about petrol. Harden up Paul. Every time I go to whinge

about something trivial from now on, I’ll remember the strength of character shown by that young lady to bring me back to earth. Is there anyone reading this column who doesn’t know someone seriously affected by the drought. I’m betting not. Now, I mean seriously affected … not just “why can’t I hose the driveway? I pay for water!” affected, but sheep and cattle dying affected, no crops growing affected, no money coming in affected. Life changing affected. Generational change affected. You don’t need me to tell you how bad it is … you know. We all know. Farmers and townsfolk further out west are showing strength greater than ever before. Buying a $20 ‘parma for a farmer’ when you’re out at the pub bistro, or kicking in some coin for the ‘buy a bale’ cause are small and easy ways we can assist our friends out west who we depend upon for our daily bread. Abiding by the water restriction rules in place is a small sacrifice we can make firstly to do our bit for the local area, but also to show some solidarity for our friends suffering a whole lot worse than we are. Strength. In the Central West we very quickly go from “Geez, it’s bloody cold”, to “Geez it’s bloody hot”, really without thinking about it – maybe just for something to chat about. Like most of us, I’ve really got nothing to complain about. Healthy, happy and living in the ‘lucky’ country. My episode just last week whinging about petrol and then bumping into that lovely young lady was grounding and a decent wake up call for me. Hopefully I’ll think twice and show some inner strength before opening my trap to whine about something trivial.

We took a stroll out the field days last week and caught up with Rotary Club of Orange North who, each year and for the past 19 years, host the catering pavilion. Battling the heat, the flies and the rumbling tummies, hard at work, they keep coming back for more! I spoke to Rotary Club of Orange North Service Director, Ray Williamson. “We love coming out to the field days, we get to talk to an awful lot of people, people get to know us, we advertise Rotary and try to encourage people to accept us as an essential part of the community. From the few days we often get a lot of community help and raise money to run our community programs for the year.” Ray mentioned the Rotarians enjoy heading out each year and having a bit of fun, “It’s a wonderful program and a great few days, we can all appreciate the farming community, we can see the fantastic innovations and it’s a great way for everyone to come out and take a look at the new toys!” Congratulations to the ANFD for a wonderful 68th exhibition!

The Rotary Club of Orange Daybreak are giving the gift of hope to our local drought affected children and their futures with their ‘Raindrops’ initiative.

hat started out as an International program for third world and disaster countries, has now been localised by Chairman of the Rotary of Orange Daybreak, John Willing and his wife Lois. An initiative of the Rotary Club of Orange Daybreak, John explained, “Some three or four years ago a few of us were in the UK and we came upon a program called ‘School in a Bag’, it’s an international program that is about the delivery of a satchel full of basic school requisites to third world and disaster countries. “We thought this was a great idea and we brought this back to Australia. Rotary Club of Orange Daybreak have been fundraising and delivered 100 bags to Thursday Island just months ago. We are fundraising to send another 100 to Timor-Leste in May next year.

This gave John and Lois the idea to help out a little closer to home. “We have now branched out and formed a new Australian project called Raindrops. Raindrops is about the delivery of a similar resource, to drought affected and rural students in Western NSW. I have just placed orders for 600 bags, 300 of which are going to students in Orange (Primary school aged) and 300 next year are going to Western Schools. John continued, “Our club really wanted to do it locally, we are trying to do everything we can for rural people (we’re also involved with Feast for Farmers), there is certainly a severe need in our local area. “Learning and Education has always been a pathway out of disadvantage. In Australia we are very fortunate, but our people are suffering in the bush, and we have to make sure that pathway is

maintained.” Each schoolbag is filled with essential resources that will enable a child to write, draw, colour, calculate, express themselves, eat, drink, and above all, learn. “The schools will give them out to who they see fit, no fuss, no bother, we deliver they hand them out. It will happen reasonably on the quiet, that will make the children most comfortable,” said John. The funds raised have been from the dedicated and hard work of the Rotarians including weekend Barbeques at Bunnings, high teas, raffles and whiskey nights. The club is also expecting a dollar for dollar grant which is funded by Dick Smith (to the value of $15,000.) Now’s not the time to be complacent with water — BY BOB HOLLAND — Orange’s current water situation was a topic of discussion at last week’s Council meeting. One Councillor mentioned that a lot of people in the community were unclear as to what the real situation is, and also what Level 5 Water Restrictions actually require of people. It was suggested that Council could do more to inform people about both these issues. How we use our water during the current crisis is vital and now’s not the time to be complacent with the way we use it. For that reason, Orange City Life wants to encourage everyone to make a determined effort to use less water when carrying out basic daily tasks. Every bit we save will help prolong any eminent disaster. By disaster, I mean running out of water completely a prospect that is almost unthinkable. For now, not panicking and simply being diligent would appear to be the best way forward. Council claims we currently have enough water to get through for the next 12 months, and that without rain. That’s encouraging. I’m not sure how they model to arrive at that but I’m guessing it’s based on water usage numbers that they have. How they factor in people’s response to restrictions, water saving advice etc., I’m not sure but my guess is they err on the side of caution. One thing we can assume however, the more diligent the community is the longer the period will be before we end up in real trouble. For example, if the community on average, cut down their 30

normal usage by 10%, that could overall extend our water supplies by a further month or so. That’s nothing official, just an observation to make a point. Council, it would appear, is doing a very good job managing our water, despite any criticism or speculation to the contrary. We now need to support their efforts and be constant and diligent in going about it. Let me therefore, encourage everyone reading this in Orange, to be familiar with what Level 5 Water Restrictions require of us and then make sure you stick to them at least. Better still, go beyond them where you can. For one simple and easy place to start, please take the time to think about all those areas where we can so easily and so often waste water, often without thinking about it. Leaving the tap run while cleaning teeth or shaving, running a tap and letting it run down a sink while water heats for washing up, running a dishwasher when it’s only partly full. Council recommends taking 3 minute showers so concentrate on the time and think about solving the problems of the world or anything else, after you’ve finished showering. I’m sure you get the idea. Rain will come, but no-one knows exactly when. Saving water is now and everyone knows exactly what’s required right now. Let’s all encourage one another to be responsible citizens, and let’s pull together as a community, as we work through this current issue.

At the end of my weekly columns I always ask for feedback and for any other issues that members of the community would like me to cover. I have received a request to address the topic of what do rate payers do when Council fails in their duties?

THE FOLLOWING ADVICE IS FROM THE OFFICE OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT:

Resolving a problem with your council If you have a concern about a council you should try to resolve it with the council in the first instance. If you are unhappy with the response from the council, you should write to council’s General Manager and ask them to look into the matter for you. When you write to the General Manager, make sure your letter is clear and to the point. Describe the problem in a couple of sentences, tell the council what you need and ask for action. You need to allow the council a reasonable period to respond. For routine matters, you should generally allow four weeks – more complex matters may take longer to examine. If the council’s response is incomplete or unclear, write again to seek clarification. If after receiving the council’s response, your problem remains unresolved, you may need to consider taking the issue up with your local elected councillors or the Mayor.

Complaint handling A complaint is an expression of dissatisfaction with the council’s policies, procedures, charges, employees, agents or the quality of the services it provides.

Routine complaints Councils should have processes in place for managing complaints that include the following features: • A clear definition of what is and is not a complaint • A user-friendly procedure for lodging complaints • A simple process for dealing with complaints • A means of recording, reporting on and using complaints data to improve systems • A commitment to efficient and fair resolution of complaints by people at all levels in the council, starting with the General Manager • Referral procedures should be known to all frontline staff • Staff training and empowerment • Appropriate remedies • Performance standards • Agreed basic policies and procedures that are easy to understand and explain will assist staff in resolving, conciliating and investigating complaints from the simple to the complex. They should always be written down.

Allegations of corrupt conduct A General Manager of a council has a duty to report to ICAC any matter he or she suspects is corrupt conduct.

Allegations of a breach of the Code of Conduct. Members of the public as well as other councillors, staff or delegates of council may make complaints under the code of conduct. The Model Code prescribes procedures for dealing with such complaints.

Allegations of a breach of the pecuniary interest provisions of the Local Government Act. The Office of Local Government is empowered to investigate breaches of the pecuniary interest provisions of the Local Government Act. The General Manager of council has an obligation to refer complaints alleging breaches of the pecuniary interest provisions to the Office. The Your Council website gives some interesting information about complaints and breaches of the Code of Conduct. The following tables show the details for 2017/18 and the Annual Reports for 2018/19 are due out by 31st October 2019.

The JAM Orange Spring/Summer concert series continues this Sunday with Senor Cabrales and local favourite Natalie McIver. Senor Cabrales are a must see for lovers of high-quality traditional music, taking audiences on a Celtic musical journey from Spain’s northwest tip to the outer Isles of Scotland. A unique group, the six musicians hail from Northern Spain and Australia and play traditional music from Asturias and Galicia in Northern Spain, Brittany, Ireland and Scotland. The band’s intricate melodic use of fiddle, Spanish pipes (gaita), mandolin, bouzouki, flute, whistle, tenor banjo, bombarde, mandola and bodhran, interwoven with rich harmonic rhythm and driving percussion, delivers a fresh,

exciting sound which continues to thrill festival audiences throughout Australia. To date, the group has released two critically acclaimed studio albums, Aqui in 2013 and Sol Y Sombra in 2015. They are currently promoting their new live album Pinchos, released earlier this year. Supporting Senor Cabrales is be local favourite Natalie McIver. Originally from Central Queensland. Natalie is a relative newcomer to Orange who has quickly made a name for herself in the local music scene. Natalie spent her childhood on cattle properties in

small communities where reciting bush poetry was a family and community past time. Writing poetry later developed into song writing and her style, which she describes as “acoustic pop with country themes” has been compared to Sara Storer and the Waifs. Lying beneath the surface of the Art Deco glamour, jazz and sophisticated society lurks a world of gangs, guns, vice and violence – welcome to the dark side of the Roaring Twenties. UNDERWORLD: Mugshots from the Roaring Twenties, is a remarkable new photographic exhibition of over 130 images reproduced from the scanned 100-year-old glass plate negatives in the collection of the Justice and Police Museum, Sydney. Taken between 1920 and 1930, these compelling images of criminal bosses, plotters, bruisers, petty crims, wayward youth and fallen soldiers were never intended to be 48

seen by the public. Suspects smile, scowl and simper for the camera in poses of their own choosing unlike the deadpan stares found in conventional mugshots from around the world. As well as capturing the subjects physical appearance, they show a hint of their personality; smoking, reading, chatting, slouched on chairs, holding handbags and often wearing stylish outfits. Accompanying the images are the backstories of the suspects revealing criminal activity, networks and some international links. UNDERWORLD: Mugshots from the Roaring Twenties will be opened at a free public event by Nerida Campbell, Curator, at 6pm on Thursday 31 October. The exhibition will be open to the public 9am-4pm daily (excluding 25 December) from Friday 1 November 2019– Sunday 1 March 2020.

NAIDOC is celebrated, not only by Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. Many fun events were held around town and it was fantastic to see so many get involved. Some favourites hosted this week included the Opening Ceremony, the Schools and Community Art Exhibition, NAIROC School Eisteddfod, Elders Luncheon and the NAIDOC Community Fete. An exploration geologist, recalls a life in the field For more than 40 years, Dr Garry Lowder travelled Australia and the world as an exploration geologist for the mining industry His work took him throughout Australia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, where he played key roles in the discovery of several mineral deposits, including the North Parkes copper, Cowal gold and Conrad silver deposits in NSW, the Paddington gold and Wodgina tantalum deposits in WA and the North Sulawesi porphyry copper deposits in Indonesia. Garry’s newly published memoir, A Journey through the Elements, is an

entertaining account of his journey through life as a geologist. Part “Boys’ Own Adventure,” part “Ode to Nature,” the narrative follows his travels from Australia to California, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and beyond. Using humour, history, science and personal anecdotes it brings to life a dynamic and inspiring world that most people cherish, but few have encountered quite so vividly. Garry will be giving an Author Talk in Orange this evening, 6pm Thursday 31 October at Duntryleague. It is a free event, and all are welcome.

The Leaving Certificate classes of 1964 and Intermediate Certificate class of 1962 from these 2 schools joined together for a 55-year reunion. — MELISE COLEMAN — Last week Waratahs was host to a touch football carnival run by NSW Touch. This carnival was for students in years’ seven and eight. In the girls division there were six teams and in the boys division there were seven. Orange High, James Sheahan, Canobolas High, Blayney High, Wellington High, St Matthews Mudgee and Oberon High School were the schools participants on the day. The carnival was the Regional day for students in the Western Area, the team who finished first in the girls and boys division progress to the state finals in Penrith later on in the term. Congratulations to Orange High School won both the boys and girls divisions on the day.

“It’s just a good looking car,” says Wayne Swadling about why he loves his two-door Ford hardtops. “I just love the shape of them, the style of them… my father always had Fords, he had Ford Fairlanes, so I’ve always been into Fords.” And, of course, there was the infamous 1-2 finish by the Ford team in 1977 that cemented the Falcon in Australian motor racing history. “The ‘77 win was probably the most photographed event that ever occurred! There were two of these XC Falcons coming in one, two lined up five or six foot behind the other… Allan Moffat and Colin Bond! That was the biggest win for Ford at Bathurst! It has been a lifelong obsession for both Wayne and his twin brother John. Their very first car was an XB Ford and John still regrets

the day they sold it. “We had that car for probably 25 years and then we sold it and always regretted it! So we’ve owned about 12 two-door Ford hardtops over the years, but we’ve now got four at the moment between the two of us.” Last month, Wayne and John travelled up to the Sunshine Cost joining around 80 other Ford enthusiasts at the Hardtop Hustle, which is set to become an annual event for Ford lovers. “We had a ball doing that, there were six of us from Orange, six Coupes. It was just a really good time, a good bunch of friends and we didn’t have any mechanical issues! There were ten Cobras there! Only four hundred Cobras ever made and they had ten up there! We took ours up, but to get ten in one spot…”

Wayne, who is also Vice President of the Gnoo Blas Classic Car Club, said there is a growing interest in all sorts of classic cars in Orange. “Classic cars have taken off in Orange and our car clubs nearly got 400 members now! We’ve been going for 25 years, but five years ago we had 70 members and now we’ve got 400 so it is huge. The Gnoo Blas Car show is getting bigger and bigger. We had over 600 cars there this year and next year is going to be bigger again!” Wayne will have his Fords on display this Saturday, 10am-1pm at West Orange Motor for the Big Boys Toy charity event. There will be other cars, bikes, trucks and boats to see, along with a sausage sizzle and car wash (using a recycled water system) with all funds raised going to Give Me 5 for Kids.

ASTLEY CUP 1960 It took more than a dump of snow to quell the enthusiasm of Orange High School students who turned out to barrack for the school during the Astley Cup competition in July 1960. The snow was the heaviest fall for some years. Orange High beat Bathurst in the football at National Park and won the final round of the contest, but Dubbo High won the cup before the third round with wins over Orange and Bathurst high schools.

The Court House Registrar will guide our tour, with other selected historians. The Orange Court House, designed by Colonial Architect James Barnet and constructed in 1883, sits prominently on a corner location in the centre of town, opposite Robertson Park. The impressive building is a fine example of late-Victorian court architecture, but it is in fact the fourth court on this site. Three buildings pre-dated it, all providing the different police and court facilities needed for Orange as it grew and changed from the earliest European settlement. l Teeth’ Author talk-Mark Filmer: ‘Three Stee Former local journalist Mark Filmer has documented the history of the wide comb shearing dispute in his book Three Steel Teeth Wide Comb Shears and Woolshed Wars. The issue in dispute surrounds how the wide comb shearers used to shear sheep. It lasted about four years and was one of Australia’s most bitter, violent and protracted industrial disputes. And it’s just when something comes up, not at special times of the day.” Bill’s brow furrowed in thought before he finally opened his mouth. “But I do know God… And I know it sounds all ‘holy’ to know God personally, but that’s the guts of Christianity. When I read my Bible and when I pray, it really is a relationship with God himself...” “You were gonna say, ‘because Jesus made it possible,’ weren’t you?” interrupted Eric. “I probably was” laughed Bill.

HUGE THUMBS UP to Hisense who lived up to their premium service warranty in replacing my faulty TV. It took only an astounding 31 hours from my initial phone call to a new TV being delivered and installed in my home. Big thanks especially to Marian at Weily’s Betta Home Living for her organising and coordinating of the paperwork and delivery. Also, thanks to Garry for delivering and installing the new TV. MASSIVE THUMBS DOWN to the Orange motorist who on the 17th September contacted a local company complaining that one of their company drivers was driving dangerously and nearly had an accident with them outside a local high school on that day in the afternoon. That complaint was not only false and untrue but your whinging cost that driver their job.

A HUGE THUMBS DOWN to a local delivery company van who on Wednesday 23rd October at the corner near Maccas North Orange went straight thru to the Northern Distributor instead of turning left as per the sign and nearly caused an accident.
