The drought continues to bite, I note more shops are closing and the impression I get is that many people are feeling in the doldrums for one reason or another. We can’t do a lot about that, but we can continue to present you with a bit of light relief each week in Orange City Life, and that’s what we’ll continue to do for as long as we can. Our mission remains to bring out the best in people and the way we choose to do that is by bringing you stories and items each week that will entertain, encourage, inspire or simple inform you about things worth reading. We are not in the business of painting things blacker than they are, or overly focussing on the half glass empty of things. Of course, there are times when we may comment on an issue when we believe something needs to be said but I hope that when we do that, we are always fair. What a joy it is to have great staff. My wife and I have just returned from two weeks away and while away, we left the business in the hands of our team, something that may seem small on the surface but I assure you, it’s no small task putting together a 60 or so page magazine like this each week. What a great job they did! To further emphasise this, I had one of our local real estate agents drop into the office on Monday just to tell me what a spectacular team of people I have here. He said his team claim they are the just the nicest people to deal with and it’s a pleasure dealing with us. That’s music to any boss’s ears. Well done team!

When Annette Steele took the reins of the Orange Local Aboriginal Land Council ten years ago, she had a trainee staff member and a budget of $140,000. Today the organisation employs more than 40 people, runs multiple community programs and handles a budget of more than $3 million a year.

he Orange Aboriginal Land Council covers an area stretching towards Bathurst, past Trunkey Creek, towards Canowindra and the other side of Molong. “It’s big!” said Annette. “We take in Orange, Cabonne, Blayney Council, Some of Goulbourn and a little bit of Mid-Western, so there are a few local government areas we cover.” The primary role of the Land Council is the management of dozens of properties across the region, including residential properties, as well as handling new claims for available Crown Land, which they then manage for their members and the community. “In a nutshell, our role it is to acquire land that was dispossessed through colonisation and have land returned back to the communities,” said Annette. “The Land is community-owned through the members and then we have to manage and look after it … manage it for weeds and fences and pest control and things.” But more than that, Orange Local Aboriginal Land Council has expanded to manage a range of community projects such as disability and homelessness services, employment training, early childhood education and land care, regeneration and revegetation projects. “We’re funded [through the NSW Aboriginal Land Council] but that’s a limited amount, so anything you want to do you have to generate your own 4

income, so you have to go and create business opportunities,” said Annette “To keep up with the needs of the community you have to think differently, you always have to be evolving and, I guess for us, whilst we are managing our land and that is our core business, it is not going to create employment or economic viability, so we had to go and look at what other things we could do that will affect a change within our community.” The Orange Local Aboriginal Lands Council run a homelessness and housing program for Bathurst and Oberon, as well as the Bathurst Women and Children’s refuge. And in partnership with the Deniliquin and Broken Hill Land Council, they oversee the Ability Links New South Wales program for the west of the state. “So we run a team of staff who support people who have a disability,” said Annette. “Supporting them to live the way they want to live… so we’ve had that for about five or six years and it’s a program that’s really working.” Then there are the five local playgroups a week they run in Orange, as well as the Designing Futures program, which works with young people to keep them engaged in school and helps them make plans for their future employment. “We also have a natural resource program; it is a regeneration, revegetation program,” said Annette. “We have a team that do some work with Cadia to do some of their regen and revegetation work, we do seed collection, repatriation work and work very closely with Local Land Service and Orange City Council. There are some really good partnerships and connections that we’ve built up

over the last five to seven years, which is a winwin for everybody.” And an exciting new project in the works is plans for a new motel on Forest Road, which would generate employment and income for the Land Council. “We need to maximise the land that we’ve got to get some economic value back into the community and so that's what we’ve been working on for the last five or six years; to have a motel built on that site, so use the land for the benefit of everybody and not just the Aboriginal community, but all the community,” said Annette. “We are always looking at better ways to do things, you have to be innovative and look at how to get the best outcome for a small amount of money.” With all this on her plate, it is no surprise that Annette’s days are full “You could have the best plan of a morning, have things booked in and you want to get stuff done, but it changes every day,” she said. “You could be dealing with negotiations with a land agreement and a phone call comes in and things happen, and you’ve just got to deal with them as best you can. It is not like I’ve got a whole team of senior managers that can do all that because if you are getting funded dollars… we prefer to put the money into projects, so I only have a small team and we manage everything. “My day could be anything from meetings all day, to writing reports or just having a cuppa with some of the elders that come in for a chat. So, it is quite diverse, you are not sitting in front of a desk all day and it is quite lovely actually. I really enjoy my job.”

THE CRUISING BUG I wrote this 2 weeks back in our Stateroom onboard the Princess Cruises cruise ship the Majestic Princess, while berthed in Wellington Harbour New Zealand. It was 4.40 on Sunday afternoon but just 1.30 back in Orange. It was a glorious day and my wife and I had just returned from having our first formal afternoon tea in the Concerto Lounge. Earlier that day, we did a four-hour shore excursion around Wellington visiting among other sites, the city’s Museum which is unbelievably spectacular. Could have spent several hours there alone. No doubt I’ll share more with readers when I return, and next week, get ready for something a bit special., For now however, I thought I’d share a few early observations.

“I’ll always treasure adventures on the farm with Mum, I used to get home from school, have a quick something to eat, swim at the Manildra pool until it closed, go home and then we would swim in the gravel pit (a dam made out of gravel). I moved to Orange from Manildra when I was 17 years old, to go to TAFE and stayed here ever since.

I’m so lucky to have my amazing husband Matt, we’ve been together 15 years this year and our two beautiful kids. I love making memories with the family. I’m so proud of my kids, its just so amazing that we have made these two cool humans. I’ve travelled to a few places overseas, though Africa is easily a favourite. My husband proposed

to me over there... I cried... I also cried when we were on a safari tour when I saw a lion... seriously, bawled. We were up early and driving around and this male lion was about 20 metres away, I grabbed the camera and I couldn’t even take a photo I was shaking and I was crying. *laughs* It was just amazing.”

For us, as first-time cruisers, it was a bit of an eye-opener on several fronts. We opted to dine on tables of several people, and this gave us the opportunity to meet and talk with a wide range of people from all parts of the world. The most surprising thing for me was the number of people who were regular cruisers, in fact we found it hard to find anyone who was like us, first timers. The very first couple we met were on their twentieth cruise, the next their eighth, several are on their third or fourth and so on. One couple said they had racked up 300 nights at sea and had friends who were almost at 1000 nights. At breakfast one morning since, a lady from Miami said this was her 70th cruise! Several mentioned something called a Platinum Card, obviously some sort of loyalty card which gave them a variety of extra benefits such as having their laundry done for them, a stocked up bar fridge and receiving various discounts for on board services etc.

Others spoke of getting some really good deals, such as two tickets for the price of one, or paying greatly reduced prices simply by waiting and booking late, when time is running out and cruise companies are keen to fill empty cabins. Another observation was the variety of people who clearly now have what I call the cruising bug. Curiosity drove me to ask our fellow travelers about their occupations, where they were from, what they liked most about cruising and so on. On face value I thought they must all be high earners or professional people who can afford such a lifestyle, but not so. Much to my surprise at least half were just ordinary working type people, most are now retired, who just love this type of travel. We met retired labourers, farmers, engineers and former business owners from regional Australia to right across the world, one chap provides services to a variety of industries including the US space industry. So, what do you think is the Number One attraction for cruising, against other holiday options? If you ever find yourself on a game of Family Feud and that question gets asked, I have no doubt the number one answer will be “you only have to unpack once!” Of course, there are other reasons but almost everyone mentioned this as a high rating attractive benefit. Many had travelled and found living out of a suitcase every day as quite a pain. So, after 13 nights on a magnificent cruise ship, what do I think about cruising? Honestly? The jury is still out. There’s a lot to like but I have to say, at this stage, my getting the cruise bug like the people I’ve mentioned is unlikely.

There will be some familiar young faces at Orange Health Service next year, as seven medical graduates from the University of Sydney School of Rural Health (SRH) have come back to start flyer.pdf 1 21/01/13 3:37 PM their internships. The students just completed the final year of their medical degree here in Orange and loved studying and working in the community so much, they are coming back for the next stage of their training. “We are delighted that so many of our medical students were offered internship places at Orange. It’s a highly competitive process with more than 175 students applying for 18 places,” said Associate Professor Catherine Hawke, Deputy Head of the SRH in Orange. “They will join many other SRH medical graduates who have chosen to return to Orange as doctors

after finishing their degree.” The students - Lily Taylor, Timothy Ellwood, Sangmo Gurung, Savisha Fernando, Laura Hall, Joshua Forrest-White and Chris Morris – are all scheduled to begin their medical internships at Orange Health Service in February 2020. The students continue a strong tradition of SRH medical students becoming junior Doctors in Orange, as they also filled seven out of 17 available internship positions in 2018, and nine out of 17 positions in 2019. SRH graduate Savisha Fernando said, “I grew up in the city so moving to Orange with its open spaces has been a rewarding and a refreshing change. I spent my final year of medical school here and I quickly felt part of the community in both the hospital and the town. The supportive and educational environment at Orange Health

Fellow graduate, Joshua Forrest-White added, “I leapt at the opportunity to spend my clinical years in Orange experiencing rural medicine. It gave me excellent handson training, as well as clinical teaching and mentorship from senior doctors. I can’t see myself as a junior Doctor anywhere else.” The School of Rural Health has also just welcomed a new cohort of fourth year students, while the new third year students are due to start early next year. These long-term placements not only give the students a fantastic learning experience, but also the opportunity to fall in love with the country lifestyle.

Orange’s winemakers celebrated the fruits of their labour this past week with the team of judges singling out the best drops in the region at the 2019 Orange Wine Show.

Judges tasted their way through 340 separate entries at this year’s show, from more than 40 producers. Local winemaker and chief steward of the Orange Wine Show, Will Rickard Bell, said the standard of wines across the board only cements Orange’s place as one of Australia’s premier wine regions. “We’ve had three or four really good vintages and that is reflected in all the results,” said Will. “Our strong performers again were Chardonnay. Riesling, Pinot Noir and Sparkling, which seems to be on the up in the region which is good. It reinforces that we are a true cool climate region; there’s not many places in the country that can do top-notch sparkling like us, so it is nice to see that trend happening across the show.” There is no slowing down Australia’s growing appetite for Rosé, which was reflected in the number of entries in the category this year, said Will.

“Rosé is on the up and the quality is good. It is serious Rosé; dry, textural, savoury, food styles,” he said. “And there’s more natural wines and cloudy wines and things that previously would have been frowned upon in a wine show context… you can’t ignore the fact that in the market they’re increasing in popularity and the judges now see them as serious styles and judge them accordingly. “Where do I stop? We do so much, we are diverse, we grow everything from 1100 metres down to 600 metres and can ripen anything and do anything really well — it is a great strength of the region.” More than just medals, for local producers, the annual wine show is an opportunity to compare notes and progress winemaking in the region as whole, said Will. “It is one of the few opportunities that producers get to benchmark their wines against the best

wines in the region and to discuss with colleagues and with judges where they might be going wrong and how they might improve,” said Will. “That’s what it is all about… it a collective group of growers and makers in the region that are all just trying to improve their product and improve their region as a whole, which lifts everyone up.” This Friday, the public has a chance to try all the wine show entries for themselves, including trophy winners, at the Canobolas Hotel. It is a rare opportunity to taste the region’s best wines in one place. “It is a one-stop-shop, every wine in the region all in one spot,” said Will. “As a consumer it’s wonderful, because you get a very good overview of the region in a very short period of time… there are some very good entries there, beyond all the medals too, so be open minded and taste every single wine, you’ll find some gems amongst the ones that didn’t win medals.”

BUILDER GOES BELLY-UP-Continued In the last issue of Orange City Life I indicated the problems associated with builders going into liquidation for homeowners during constructions. Home Building Compensation Fund (‘HCBF’) insurance is compulsory for any builder undertaking residential work exceeding $20,000.00. Although the insurance policy states that losses flowing from such things as non-completion of the work, defective work and breach of the statutory warranties for quality of work by the builder are covered under the policy there are significant obstacles in the way of a homeowner who wishes to make a claim under the policy. If the builder who undertook the work is still in business the homeowner should first exercise its rights against the builder under the terms of the building contract. This might include such things as giving notice to the builder of a particular defect for failure to undertake certain works and if that notice is not complied with, withholding payment or suspending works or terminating the contract. Homeowners contemplating these actions should always get legal advice before proceeding. However, once the contractual rights have been exhausted by the homeowner without satisfactory response by the builder, the homeowner must generally initiate a formal complaint through Fair Trading to try to have the matter resolved by an onsite meeting. If this does not resolve the problem the homeowner is then required to initiate proceedings in the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT) to seek orders for damages for rectification of the defects or completion of works. The HBCF policy will only come into force if those NCAT proceedings result in a order to do work against the builder or a money order in favour of the homeowner for the cost of rectification or in-completed works and then:

• Only if the builder then fails to complete the work or pay the money because of the insolvency, death or disappearance of the builder or the licence of the builder is suspended for failure to pay the money. So, although the homeowner may feel comfortable that they have what they believe is an insurance policy if the builder goes broke or fails to do work, generally if the builder is still in business the homeowner has to undertake the proceedings right through the NCAT process resulting in a final order. The builder then has to be insolvent, dead or disappeared before the conditions arise under which a claim can be made by the homeowner on the HBCF insurance. TIME LIMITS There are also time limits for making a claim under the policy and often these time limits can be exceeded because of the requirement to first pursue all rights against the builder through

NCAT. In these circumstances as soon as the “possibility” of a claim is known, it is wise that the homeowner provides a notification of the possible loss to the home building compensation insurer. HOW I GET MY KICKS

arly this year Orange City Life caught up with retired electrician and procedural writer, Peter Rodgers, to talk about his obsession with leather working, but during our chat it quickly became apparent that Peter is not one to stop at just a single hobby. It was near the end of our interview, almost as an afterthought, that Peter casually volunteered that he also wrote dictionaries in his spare time. Well, we thought it was high time to get Peter back in the office and tell us all about his love of the English language. “It started out many, many, years ago,” said Peter, when asked just how he came to put together a 300-plus page dictionary of obscure and obsolete words, with a second volume underway. “I was sitting in a doctors surgery waiting for my appointment. dot above an ‘i’ is called a tittle, but everyone says it is a ‘dot above the i.’ We are really reducing our language.” So, about 20 years ago Peter decided that someone should collect all these forgotten words. “To write a book was always on my bucket lists was and I didn’t want to write a novel… my son said to me one day, ‘Dad, you’re like a walking dictionary.’ So, I thought that’s what I’ll do! I’ll write a dictionary!” It took 15 years, but Peter did what he set out to do, self-publishing his very own dictionary, full of words like galeanthropy, matutolypea, moirologist and obstrigillate. “I think there are about seven and a half thousand words in there,” said Peter, holding his leather-bound dictionary. “It was a disease in the end and I still do it today… Every one of those words are fascinating to me and I don’t think I’ll ever stop. There are so many words out there that we have just lost. “Language is the key to the hearts of the people; if we didn’t have a language, we’d still be in grottos grunting at each other. I just find it so fascinating!”

Dallas lights up the stage in Muay Thai — BY JONATHAN ROE —

Dallas George may be just 11 years old, but he is already making a name for himself on the world stage.

Dallas just returned from Turkey, where he represented Australia at the IFMA World Youth Muay Thai Championships held 28 September to 6 October. Dallas won all three of his fights in the 10-11 years Under 42 Kilogram class and took home the gold medal. It was the first international Muay Thai tournament for Dallas, but he’s no stranger to International competition. He has been a member of the Australian Karate Team for the past three years and competed in Japan earlier this year. Dallas spoke somewhat reluctantly to Orange

City Life as, despite his achievements, he is quite modest and not one to bring attention to himself. But his dedication and discipline to the sport at such a young age is remarkable. “I’ve been training for six years,” said Dallas, “and I train every day, except Saturday.” “Yep, he trains six days a week in the Gym and then he does his own training,” said Dallas’ mother Zara Wells, who also trains karate and Muay Thai at Orange’s Hi Impact Gym. “He runs every day and does bag rounds on top of his normal classes and he has a pad holder who used to be an ex pro Muay Thai fighter.” Four hours a day in the gym is typical, said

Dallas, who has a busy competition schedule ahead of him. “We’ve got the ACT State Titles on the weekend for Karate and the Australian Selection for Wako Kickboxing on November 4, and then we have an Australian Karate Titles, which is selection for the Australia Karate Team next year and that’s at the end of November and then a Muay Thai fight in Canberra on the 6th of December, and then tryouts for the Australia Muay Thai Team in January,” said Zara. “So, it keeps us busy, pretty much every weekend it is something about martial arts for us.”

The sheer number of grants available in the Orange Region, for a variety of organisations and causes is amazing. The main thing to be aware of when searching for grants for your organisation is the closing date a for the grant, so you don’t waste time on preparing an application that will be rejected out of hand. There are many sources of grants including Australian and NSW Governments, Councils and local industry. I have selected a few grants that are currently open for applications that may be of interest to local communities and businesses. This is not intended to be a comprehensive list and it is good to use a variety of search criteria to see what could be available for your particular circumstances.

Cadia Community Partnership Program aims to support and enhance the community groups, organisations and infrastructure which provide a sustainable foundation for the communities in which we operate. These grants have no closing date. Consideration will be given to pursuing partnerships with projects which: •A re within Cadia’s sphere of influence, i.e. the shires of Cabonne, Blayney and Orange • I ndiscriminately benefit the whole or a wide section of the local community • Provide enduring value to the community •A re recognised charities, disadvantaged groups, not-for-profit organisations, community or educational projects. For six and a half years, Ziera Shoes were the collection point for the knitted bears assisting in bringing a smile to children in the hospital, as the store is set to close, a new collection point has been established at Kingfisher School Gear ( just across the road).

ear Coordinator, Di Drew said, “It was really kind of Kingfisher School Gear to take this on and we thank them so much. A lot of people don’t like to come all that way, as we are too far out, a lot of elderly people find it easier to drop them in around town. We also have many out of towners, who don’t necessarily know Orange, who knit for us, so its handy for them to have a designated spot in town they can find.” Owners of Kingfisher School Gear, Stephen and Laurelle Honeysett were too happy to get on board, “We are really happy to be able to assist the community in this way,” said Laurelle. “A number of our Granddaughters have received bears in hospital in recent times, so, we know first-hand that the kids love them.”

Di continued, “From the Blue Ladies and Men of Orange Health Service to the staff at Ziera, thank you! They have accepted donations of knitted bears, snakes and other items for our sick children since May 2013. With 12,000 collected in that amount of time, it’s been amazing, well done knitters your donations have brought many smiles to little people’s faces.” For those unfamiliar with the bears, these knitted items are placed around the hospital for; accident and emergency, x-ray clinics, children’s ward, maternity and wherever else they are needed, to bring a little comfort to our young ones. Just last week they won a 2019 ‘Shonky’ award from Choice for putting profit before customer returns. Choice found AMP has a “grossly

underperforming superannuation division, which has the lowest customer satisfaction ratings on record and boasted no fewer than a million-plus inactive accounts across its AMP Retirement Trust and Super Savings Trust products in 2018.” Choice went on to explain that those products make up “a walloping 55.5% of its superannuation customer base, which is particularly bad news for a lot of Australian workers – AMP is the third-largest fund by number of accounts. These idle accounts are slowly, inexorably losing value as the fees eat into the principal, quite possibly surpassing any gains.” This is seriously scary stuff. Cameron Sinclair, a senior policy adviser at the CHOICE-affiliated Super Consumers Australia, said of AMP, “It has historically been much better at growing its books and signing up customers than it has been at

delivering strong returns.” Pretty scathing, yet how many people remain stuck in these products, unaware of the consequences? How many years has your super already been failing to perform at its best? Put it this way… if you knew your car had problems, how long would you drive it around for before taking it in to a mechanic to get it looked at? How much damage could you potentially do to the engine by putting it off? How much more will it end up costing you in the future by not taking action now? Apply the same logic to your money. Your super is far more important than your car. But who is your money mechanic? I’ve helped many people this year to sort this out (and put in place other wealth creation and protection strategies as well).

You can either take control of your financial future and start making money in your sleep, or you can ignore it and let someone else make money at your expense. The choice is yours! NDIS WORKSHOP

COMES TO ORANGE People with disability in the Central West are invited to share their experiences with the National Disability Insurance Scheme. An accessible community workshop will be held in Orange at the Orange Ex-Services Club on 22 October, starting at 10am, to discuss ways to improve participants’ experiences with the NDIS. “The Women’s Shed is designed to provide a safe and happy space for women in the community. We offer personal and practical skills for women, plus provide an avenue for friendship and to remove some women from social isolation,” Julie explained to me. While a Women’s Shed exists in Orange and also in Lithgow, Julie said her goal was to build the concept to a point where it is as popular and effective as the Men’s Sheds which are located across the country. It is a great initiative and Julie is full of energy to build the concept. I think the sky is the limit for project’s like Julie’s and being involved with the National Rural Women’s Coalition is a wonderful stepping stone for the Women’s Shed project. I am really happy to support Julie and her committee here in Orange, and also the growth of the Women’s Shed movement beyond our electorate.

TRUNKEY CREEK SHOW On Saturday, I visited the 37th Trunkey Creek Annual Wool and Horse Festival. It was a busy weekend across the region, but I always love visiting our local shows, which are the lifeblood of many small communities.

I want to encourage show societies across the Lithgow region to apply for Australian Government Regional Agricultural Show Development Grants Program (AgShows) funding to upgrade, maintain, buy or build new showground infrastructure and attractions. Applications were now open for the $20 million AgShows program - an election commitment we took to the polls back in May and which we have now delivered upon. Eligible local show societies and state and territory agricultural show peak bodies could receive grants of up to $500,000 under the program. Agricultural shows are part of our national identity and are thriving hubs of local industry, commerce, culture and community. They showcase the pinnacle and pride of local produce which often spans generations of tradition and know-how. Local shows bring communities closer together especially in times of drought and other hardships, and I encourage show societies to tap into this great grants program. The Lemon Tree – Doing Our Bit Feeling a bit helpless in the drought? There’s plenty we can do to help save water … Let’s start with some statistics first. Maths is my fave thing, so this column has got to be ‘evidence based, right? A standard toilet cistern releases about 5 litres of water when the button is pushed after a ‘number one’. If you push the other button (for a number two, or just because you like to really flush it down good), then you’ll use about 10 litres of water each time. Averaging that out, a regular Joe will probably use about 35 litres of water a day on bathroom functions. That’s more than 1000 litres a month literally going ‘down the toilet’, or over twelve thousand litres a year used by just one person. Now, ladies I’m not leaving you out of the equation here, so join in if you want, but my early suggestions are really just for the male folk at this stage. So, if there’s 40000 people in Orange (half of those being males), then give or take, that totals up to more than two hundred and fifty MILLION litres of water (250 MEGAlitres) flushed away. One more stat for you … an ugly one. It appears Mr/Mrs Average stays in the shower for a whopping 8 long minutes each day. Really? That’s a long shower. More than 65 litres of water in most cases. So, suggestion number one - If we each cut back to three minutes per shower as they hope we might do in these times of crisis, we’d each save another 40 litres of water per day. That’s 14000 litres each a year that each of us could bank (over half a billion litres, or half a GIGAlitre in Orange). If the shower recess is big enough, then sharing the shower with the one you love is certainly another way of giving generously to the great water-saving

cause. I guess that was suggestion number two. Living out of town makes suggestion number three an easy one, but this might be a little more difficult (and inappropriate) if you live in the ‘burbs. Having a wee off the verandah in the pitch black with nobody around is one of life’s great pleasures. Alone with a gazillion stars for company. Not only is it the world’s greatest view for a ‘number one’, but that’s doing your bit for the drought with no flushing needed. Yep, another five litres saved. Got a lemon tree? Then paying a visit to the ol’ citrus plant is definitely a double bonus. Much of what’s contained in a wee turns out to be essential ingredients for lemon & lime trees. Many years ago, weeing on the lemon tree formed a major part of the toilet training processes we put in place for our first born (he’s 23 now and will be very embarrassed if he ever reads this ). He was more than excited every time the urge came along. Just be sure to keep regular water up to the citrus trees if you’re doing this, because wee can burn a little. There’s suggestion number four - wee on the lemon tree, killing two birds with the one stone as they say – saving water AND helping your citrus.

In summary, little things can make a big difference. Cut your shower time in half, and/or share it. If the opportunity presents, sneak outside in the dark (or behind the shed) for a number one. Finally, get the tin lids to help your lemon tree and save more flushing water at the same time. Working together and beat the drought, one wee at a time.

I often hear people compare Orange and Bathurst Councils, so this tool is very useful for that kind of discussion. The two councils have similar number of population and households, but Bathurst Regional Council covers a much bigger area of 3,818 square kilometres compared with Orange City Council’s 284 square kilometres.

Most of the financial figures are very similar between the two Councils. Bathurst’s rates are lower than Orange’s, but the income derived from rates is around the same. Orange’s fees and user charges brought in $10.4 million more than Bathurst’s in 2017/18. Male

Bathurst’s expenditure was $10 million higher than Orange’s which meant that Bathurst has a lower operating surplus than Orange. Orange’s operating performance which measures how well Councils keep operating expenses within operating revenue at 14% compared with Bathurst at -6.9%. The Office of Local Government sets a benchmark greater than zero for this measure, and most of Orange’s financial health measures are much better than Bathurst’s. Orange’s Operating Performance Ratio has been positive and trending upwards over at least the last 3 years and Bathurst’s has been below zero and stable for at least the last 3 years. On the face of it this suggests that Orange is performing better than Bathurst, but there is information missing such as does Bathurst have higher service levels than Orange? Gender

The afternoon was an informal gathering of approximately 34 ex-menders from the Macquarie Worsteds Factory in Orange, Better known as the Woollen Mills. They were all from the invisible mending group of ex-employees. The factory closed approximately 38 years ago.

Orange welcomed 15 new medical students to the region on Thursday October 3rd. The students form the University of Sydney will be working at the Orange Health Service. Michael Newman (proud Wiradjuri man and community engagement officer at the TAFE) and Mayor Red Kidd welcomed the new doctors to the area and encouraged them to enjoy all the area has to offer during their stay. The event at the Nile Street Café included approximately 55 people that included the new students, current medical students working at the hospital, local medical and training staff as well as a variety of locals to enable the students to met those they would be interacting with as part of their work in a informal and social environment.

Where and when were you born? In Moree, 1934 What are the most important lessons you’ve learned in life? I don’t really know... I learnt a lot whilst bringing up my children, you learn a lot when you are married too. What’s the secret to a happy marriage? Just being happy!

How did you meet your spouse? I met my husband at a ball. My sister was with me, she was a nurse, Harry was a radiographer, so they knew each other from work, he came over ...My husband and was talking to her. They went to dinner and Harry, we were were turned away because good mates.... it was too busy, so they came back, when they left again I went with them and he started talking to me… the next day he rang me up and invited me out... and that was it *laughs* I said to my sister... ‘do you mind me going out with Harry?’ she said, ‘No No!’ *laughs* it was funny.

What is your favourite childhood memory? I suppose staying with Grandparents, I was the eldest of six children, when another sibling arrived my Granny would come over from the Coast to see the new baby and she would take me back for a holiday.

What did you get up to when you were young? We lived out of town and so when we were in town we would go to the pictures. When I got to 13, I started playing tennis and played right through until I was 56 years old. I only stopped because I had a fall and hurt my back… I enjoy watching it on tv now. Who is the person who influenced your life the most? Why? My husband Harry, we were good mates. We always got on alright and we travelled to a lot of different places because of his job, he got along very well with everybody. Where has been your favourite place to live? Wentworth Falls, we were very happy there and it was very close to Moree, we could duck over and see family quite often.

Ladies of the Lake Mountain Bike Challenge Following the resounding success of the inaugural Ladies of The Lake Mountain Bike Challenge in 2018, Orange Mountain Bike Club are pleased to announce the return of the event in 2019. Held at the Club’s home trails at the Lake Canobolas Mountain Bike Park, and offering trails for riders of all skill level and experience. Set amongst native bushland and boasting views worth climbing the hill for. The Challenge is designed to encourage female riders to ‘have a go’, in a positive and fun environment, while also providing an opportunity for more competitive riders to pit themselves agains the trails and other riders. The event features three distinct categories for rider’s to choose from: Beginner, Intermediate, and Expert, with the riding trails catering to the skill level of those riders. Riders are challenged to complete as many laps as they can (or want) within two hours. All entrants will receive a pack of riding goodies, and a souvenir race plate, with spot prizes and podium prizes in each category also up for grabs.

FUNDS RAISED FOR BLOOMFIELD

The small band of volunteers from Bloomfield Hospital Auxiliary raised $6783 from their annual raffle. Their efforts included 500 volunteer hours over 23 days, selling tickets across Orange’s main shopping areas. The funds raised by the Auxiliary will be used to provide Christmas gifts for patients on the Bloomfield campus, as well as emergency needs for acute patients, like clean socks & underwear. Cr McRae who was invited to draw the raffle said, “This small group of volunteers punch above their weight when it comes to fundraising, with an amazing range of donations from local businesses and impressive ticket sales. I know their support is really valued by the staff and patients of Bloomfield campus. Many of the long-term patients don’t have connections with family or friends to celebrate Christmas, and the support provided by the Auxiliary gives them a real spark of joy.” Well done Bloomfield Auxiliary!

Originally from Finland, John Nevalainen, came to Australia 27 years ago and has a background in medicine and dentistry. Over the years, John has acquired technical skills from a variety of artistic short courses, workshops and one-onone masterclasses with professional artists. He has a particular interest in the southwestern USA and returns there most years to photograph and gain

inspiration for his painting. His latest exhibition reflects this interest. The exhibition will be on display until 8 November, but you can come join John for an official opening and special viewing of his exhibition on Friday 25 October at 6pm. The exhibition is on display at the Art Rooms (entry located at the rear of the Woolworth’s carpark near Harris Farm) come and join John for a chat, some nibbles and a glass of wine.

Also now on display is a new exhibition of work by Orange Art Society members. The exhibition will run for two months (until 7 December) and all works are for sale at reasonable prices. Admission is free and the exhibition is open most days. If the door is open and the banner flying, come on in! Next month’s feature artists will be Sandra Wenban and Wanda Driscoll; their exhibition will run from 9 November to 7 December.

Our Internal Drought

Water means life and a drought makes this painfully clear. This basic reality helps us understand Jesus’ words in John chapter 4. Here we find Jesus sitting by a well in the heat of the day. Thankfully a Samaritan woman is drawing water there, so he asks her for a drink. She’s offended, because Samaritans and Jews don’t mix, and says so. Jesus’ reply is surprising. He says that if she knew who he was, she would be asking him for a drink and he would give her living water. A water that cures thirst and wells up to eternal life. Tired of her daily trek to collect water she immediately accepts this too-goodto-be-true offer. She thinks Jesus can provide a bucket of water that never runs out, but she misses his point. Jesus is not offering water to keep her alive right now; he’s offering to keep her alive forever. Perhaps as we experience the devastating effects of the drought around us, we’ll be reminded of our internal drought. Let’s pray for rain and be bold enough to ask for something better; living water. My prayer is that God will grant us both.

In the glass this wine pours a pale luminous gold and smells of citrus blossom, the taste is of lime and musk with delicious mineral notes and in the words of Nashdale Lane it “evokes the pretty fishing villages and fairy-tale castles” so if your imagination is running away with those images this might be the wine for you! The vineyard was established at Nashdale Lane in the year 2000 and produces wines from 8 varieties of estate grown grapes. The cellar door (a converted apple packing shed) overlooks the picturesque rolling hills of Nashdale and Borenore and back to the Northern face of Mount Canobolas; the perfect place to relax with an enhanced wine tasting. Nashdale Lane host a number of events including the Grapes of Mirth event in November, there is also limited availability for events, parties or conferences. The cellar door is open 7 days a week, during the Orange Wine festival the hours are 11:00-5pm every day. Mention you saw the Riesling in Cheers and you will be eligible to pick up a 7th bottle free with a purchased half dozen wines.
