On Saturday, I was speaking with a visitor who had come down from a Queensland cattle station west of Roma. Looking around he said this was the first time he’d seen green grass in over a year and you could almost see how relaxed it made him. Growing up on red soil country west of the Darling, I could relate. When people talk about how dry it is here, I look around and think it’s not too bad, there’s still grass cover on the ground. When it’s dry out west there’s not a blade of grass green, yellow or any colour to be seen. In fact, during an intense drought period in the early 1980s, my mother was so desperate to see a bit of green that we ended up with a green kitchen— green painted cupboards, green benchtops the lot! Let’s hope for more rain and lots of it! Speaking of green… Good news announced this past week about ‘A Day on the Green’ coming to Orange’s Heifer Station winery in February. I think a music festival has been something missing from the local scene and it is sure to grow our thriving tourism industry further.

Is it possible to look up to someone who is younger than you? Yep it completely is. 12-year-old, Knox Gibson is a kid that everyone can learn a little bit from. Living with limb loss since he was three years old, there is absolutely nothing about it that stops him from living a great (and busy) lifestyle. Look out world – Here comes Knox.

nox said, “I wouldn’t say I’ve got a disability; I mean... it’s only a hand, I’ve still got another one, and I can practically do just as much as anyone else can.” See! We told you he’s a total legend! Even more so, Knox has signed up to be a ‘Birthday Legend’ for Variety- the Children’s Charity. The funds that Knox raises will help give kids a fair go by supporting 'Just Like You,' a program delivered in NSW public schools special program that educates kids and build awareness of people with a disability. The aim is to stop bullying and celebrate people of all abilities. “Although I haven’t had the experience of being bullied or left out at school, I know of many people who have, and I never want people to go through that. I hope that by people seeing my story their ideas and opinions shift on those with any kind of disability.” With the amazing outlook that Knox has on life, I asked him what he would normally get up to on any given day and let me tell you, I wasn’t expecting the response I got. “Swimming is a big part of my life, I swim five days a week and I actually went to Nationals this year and came back with five medals. I love cricket and rugby- I also play for the Central West Ruby Union

representative under 12s team, playing flanker.” Knox continued, “I also do a bit of modelling and ads. I was in a Kmart TV commercial a few years ago. I remember the first night it had come out, we were all sitting on the lounge and it just would not come on,” Knox laughed, “and then once it came on, I was really happy. It’s a great industry, you get to meet new people which is always good, sometimes you make contacts that will help you with more modelling, it’s just a great experience.” To say he has a busy schedule would be an absolute understatement, though Knox wouldn’t have it any other way. Something incredibly exciting came his way in 2018. As part of the ABC coverage for the Invictus Games, Knox was asked to be a junior reporter and had his own mini show. “It was a really cool experience, just to see people who were a lot like me, you can nearly walk around every corner and see someone with one arm or someone in a wheelchair. It was just good to see that the support was just amazing and what they have overcome.” “Michael Lyddiard and I were comparing arms because he had an arm like me. He had also torn his hamstring in a race and he still had to compete in long jump, he actually asked me to do it with him, so I did… we came... last... well, second, because there were only two competitors,”

Knox laughed. “I got to get up on the podium with him to receive the silver medal and he gave the medal to me.” “It was such an amazing experience, it was just great to see a lot of people like me, so determined to do stuff after they have been through incidents or accidents that have probably scarred them for life. I want my attitude to be like theirs were, that’s how positive and inspiring they were.” “I actually feel that I’ve been so lucky to do these amazing things, and that’s why I would like to give back and raise money for the ‘Just Like You’ program.” “Together we can stand up to bullying and make a big difference to the lives of kids living with a disability to feel safer, more included and accepted.” I know there are going to be kids out there in a worse situation than me and how hard it can be, Variety helps those people and I just want those people to be helped. EVERYBODY HAS A STORY IN THEM. It’s true. Although I’d go a bit further to say everyone has many, many stories in them, whether they know it or not. It’s one of the best things about my job that each week I get to meet and talk to people. I love it as I find people endlessly interesting. Now, in my job I’ve met celebrities, TV and radio personalities, a couple Prime Ministers, Governors and Governor Generals and an endless succession of politicians, but it’s not their stories that grab me. [Politicians, as a rule are not usually very interesting… well at least not when they are being politicians! The exception to this is the former Member for Murray Darling, Peter Black, who was always very interesting, but not always for the right treasons.]

me, is travelling to the beach with my family, or, a girls weekend away every now and then also helps. *laughs* I actually always secretly wanted to be a Chef; I really enjoy cooking, in saying that, I’ve been a hairdresser for 18 years now and I’m loving it each day. I enjoy

the creativity that the job brings, and I just love making people feel good about themselves. I’m really proud that I have recently started my own business, it’s something a bit more challenging and being my own boss is great, it has allowed me to have a great work/ life balance.

No, for me the best stories come from the people you don’t expect. Ordinary people with a passion for something. And the funny thing is, more often than not, these are the people who don’t consider themselves interesting at all. So often I’ve heard people tell some variant of ‘Why are you talking to me? I’m not very interesting’ and then they go on to casually deliver the most amazing tales! One person that comes to mind is Cedric, who I could never convince to sit down for an interview and sadly, has now passed. Cedric was full of amazing stories that I only got snippets of over a few Resches at the local club. Leaving the German merchant navy to come to Australia in the 50’s, somehow he only first learnt to swim in the rock-holes at Byrock, 700 kilometres from the sea and nowhere near a river! “What? Your boats don’t float?” was Cedric’s reply when asked about his

swimming ability by the recruiting officer. Then there’s Mary, who held the title of Australia’s oldest publican, and was still serving beers at Barringun well into her 80s. Or Ray, one of the few remaining golf leaf gilding craftsmen in Australia. Mock, the poet and modern-day boundary rider on the Queensland border. Deidre, the trained opera singer who married a western grazier and used to sing arias to kangaroos at dusk. Alma Jean the Paroo Queen, a fishing guru. John, the professional roo shooter and bird lover, who’d dropper feed his young chicks while out hunting at night… I’ve spoken with champion show cooks, leatherworkers, artists, UFOlogists, family historians, fifth generation graziers, goat rustlers, ex-undercover police, gardeners, shearer’s cooks, cryptozoologists, farmer philosophers and countless more. And I love it! I find talking to people about what they are interested in incredibly interesting. There is visible shift in body language and demeanour when you get someone talking about what they are enthusiastic about and it can be infectious. I try my best to share glimpses of these people’s stories with readers, but I know I never really do them justice. So, just know that if you don’t find a piece interesting it is entirely my own fault and not that of my subjects. I also don’t take the task lightly. I know it can be confronting for some people to hand over their story to someone for them to then share with the world. I consider it a privilege. I’m just looking forward to seeing what stories pop up this week!

OHS Wellbeing Day Last week Orange High School hosted a ‘Wellbeing Day’ for the entire school community and it was, to say the least, quite spectacular. They had everything from a mechanical bull ride, a rockclimbing wall, dodgem cars and the hurricane through to movies, yoga, meditation and live music!

lthough the day was all about having fun, it was also about emphasising the importance of wellbeing for both students and teachers alike. Principal, Chad Bliss explained, “Our Wellbeing Day was a culmination of a 12-month strategy where we’ve been focusing on strong wellbeing initiatives and practices for our students. We know that students that have strong mental health and mental wellbeing are more likely to succeed at school and take up opportunities post school. We’ve had a really strategic focus for a number of years now on strong wellbeing practices.” Once students were told about the event, some weeks before, there was said to be a total buzz around the school. “It was a great fun day out for both staff and students, for them to interact, have some fun, talk to some mental health and wellbeing providers and really focus on enjoying themselves prior to the school holidays. Over 1000 were in attendance and every one of them was engaged and having fun, that’s what it’s all about for us.” The event also doubled as a fundraiser to support some of the rural communities who are doing it tough during the drought, including Trundle Central School. Mr Bliss continued, “Our students have really donated well to a cause that affects many of them, we know the difficulties kids are going through out in the bush, in rural and far Western NSW.” The event would also see off their 2019 Year 12 students- in style might we add! “What we are really hoping is that they enjoyed the day, that they understand that being positive and happy at school has long lasting effects. We couldn’t think of a better way, it hasn’t been done, certainly in Orange before, and it’s a huge success, we couldn’t be prouder.”

BUILDER GOES BELLY-UP CONSEQUENCES FOR HOMEOWNERS It is unfortunate that a local Bathurst based company has recently been placed in liquidation leaving several homeowners with partially completed homes and many tradies and other suppliers with large outstanding monies unpaid. We have in recent weeks had several contacts from homeowners and trade creditors for advice on their remedies, if any, against the builder in liquidation. HOMEOWNERS Any licensed builder in New South Wales undertaking residential building work exceeding $20,000.00 in value is required to take out an insurance policy under the Home Building Compensation Fund (‘HBCF’) (formally known as Home Warranty Insurance). Home Building Compensation cover is only available from a single provider operated by the NSW Government.

A scope of works and probable cost of completion of incomplete works;

A schedule of items of defective work recommended for rectification.

The insurer will then seek tenders from approved builders for those works and upon the acceptance of a tender the new builder will be appointed to undertake completion of the home and rectification of defective works. HOWEVER There are limits on the cover available under the HBCF policy namely: 1.

For non-completion of work, the policy will not cover an amount more than 20% of the contract price including variations.

However, many homeowners do not realise that Home Building Compensation Fund insurance is only insurance of last resort.

If the builder is not insolvent, dead or has disappeared, a homeowner is required to initiate proceedings in the NSW Civil & Administrative Tribunal (NCAT) and obtain Orders for damages or rectification of defects before any claim can be made on the HBCF policy.

Is your dog at risk? Yes! Leptospirosis is now in NSW. This nasty bacterial disease is spread by rats and, even with veterinary help, 10 dogs have died during the outbreak. Please read on to find out the facts. Leptospirosis is a serious infectious disease which affects domestic and wild animals and even humans. It is caused by a bacteria - rats are the most common carrier of the disease. You or your pet can catch leptospirosis if you are bitten by a carrier, or if you come into contact with infected soil or water. The bacteria can also be swallowed, or enter your pet via a cut in his or her skin. The Leptospirosis cases reported in Sydney are mainly in the Surrey Hills/Glebe area and including Centennial Park. But dogs that do not travel to Sydney are still at risk, as now the disease has travelled to NSW, it can spread – rats can get everywhere! The strain of Leptospira is serovar Copenhageni. Dr Judith recommends that your dog is vaccinated with Protech C2i, which protects against Leptospira Cophenhageni by two vaccinations, one month apart and then an annual booster. All puppies will be offered the Leptospirosis

‘H’ in Hardware

When David Kent was offered the opportunity to buy a local hardware business 31 years’ ago, he stewed on it for about three months before deciding to take the plunge.

aving started his career at B.G Deins in Peisley Street, David had worked his way up through all aspects of the timber and hardware business. He was looking for a new adventure, but still he hesitated before taking that leap into buying his own business. “Then I said to my wife Joan ‘well we’re young enough, let’s bite the bullet and do it! If we get in trouble, we’re young enough to get out of trouble!’ So that’s where it started,” said David, who has grown the business from a small corner hardware store to a large trade supplier with around 24 staff and a key player in a national buying group. “We were founding members of HBT which is Hardware and Building Traders, a buying group,” said David, recalling how a group of dissatisfied store owners decided to take matters in their own hands. “We were a Home Hardware store, but they weren’t going down the avenue we were going — we didn’t want pots and pans, cups and saucers and these sorts of things — we do retail, but trade is our main focus,” said David. “We were at a conference and we left pretty disappointed and half a dozen of us went across to the pub and had a discussion about it. One person said, ‘how hard would it be to run one of these buying groups?’

“And that’s how it kicked off. There were six of us, then nine stores and now there are 750 plus stores Australia Wide!” Kent’s and other members of the Hardware and Building Traders buying group have begun rebranding under the H Hardware name, to give a unified look to the group, but each store remains completely independent. After several decades in the hardware game, David is taking a step back and has handed over the running to his son Brendan who joined the business eight years ago. “I’d asked him some time ago if he’d be interested, it wasn’t the right timing then, but eventually he saw the light,” laughs David. Brendan spent 13 years as a builder before following his father into the hardware game, starting out in the timber yard, doing deliveries to now running the ever-expanding business. Kent’s have just bought the Molong Home Hardware store, which will soon bear the H Hardware name. “Sometimes you miss being out in the yard, when you’re in the office, but I really enjoy all sides of it,” said Brendan. “I think you have to love what you do and I certainly do, I enjoy coming to work. There is a great bunch of people here. We all have a good time— we get the job done, but if we can have a bit of a joke and some fun while we do it, we intend to.

“But our first priority is service, we’ve got our loyal customers and we make sure they get looked after.” Deliveries are a big part of Kent’s service. Their three trucks and delivery utes can be found carting building supplies as far as Wellington, Parkes, Blayney, Cowra and even Bathurst “Some of our customers from Bathurst ask us to open a store there, but no way!” said Brendan, who says people come to them because they are willing to do whatever they can to get customers what they need. “We can’t stock everything, there’s just too much available, but we’ll order anything in for our customers… we’ll try our hardest to get a price and get it in whereas some of our competitors will just say no. So, I guess that’s where we are different, our service.” As well as opening their new Molong Store, and continually updating their showroom with the latest kitchen and bathroom trends, Kent’s have plans to further expand their warehouse on Dalton Street. “Everyone always needs building materials, especially in Orange!” said Brendan. “A year or two ago I was saying it’s got to slow down, it just can’t keep getting busier each year, but then Dad reminded us that he’s been saying that for 30 years! “Hopefully I can keep this going for another 30 or 40 years, I can’t see why not.”

12-year-old Keeley Holmes, has returned from Penrith where she recently competed in the two-day Rugby 7s competition, representing Polding. To be picked in the Polding side there were several tasks at hand, Keeley explained, “We participated in different drills and games before they picked a selection of possibles and probable’s, I was chosen in that selection, and then from there we played another few games before the completed team was selected. “When I was picked I was pretty excited, I just love playing footy, I love the teamwork involved and making new friends in the sport. Since many people in our team didn’t know each other, the day before the competition we got together for a two-hour training session, this is where everyone met, and we tested out a few different

plays to get in sync with one another. Keeley, at home, a CYMS Rugby league girl, played in the Forwards. “We were all exhausted after the second day, our coach told us that we played well and played with great sportsmanship.” The girls finished third overall which Keeley mentioned she was quite happy with. “Since not many people knew each other, I think we played well for playing with ‘strangers’ pretty much.” Keeley continued, “I think more girls should get involved with the sport, they shouldn’t be scared, the boys let you have a go and treat you like you are one of them. It’s a great sport to play.” Congratulations Keeley!

In his follow-up books David has delved into other health topics, looked at education, psychopaths and now teenagers. Orange City Life caught up with David in Orange last week to talk about his latest book Teen Brain. So, just what is Teen Brain about? It is about a lot of things to do with teenagers, but focused on why teenagers shouldn’t be allowed unfettered access to screens and particular types of software on those screens. What made you want to tackle this particular topic? I have six teenage children, well the two oldest are no longer teenagers, but Generation Z who are the age group affected by this and I have personally witnessed the effect of them having exposure to particular types of software. Anxiety and depression in teenagers has doubled in the last ten years at a time when all of the traditional addictions like drinking, smoking, drug access, underage sex — all the instances of those has halved in the last ten years, and it is more than a coincidence that that is the same time frame where we’ve had the release of the iPad. he Borenore Nashdale Mens’ Shed has been given a mighty facelift as the Shed was fortunate in receiving a grant from the NSW Government, under the Community Building Partnership Program of $29,472 to provide for clean safe work areas. To celebrate the completion of the great facility the Mens’ Shed opted to host a casual function/BBQ, to acknowledge everyone’s contribution and to promote the work of the Mens’ Shed in providing a social, constructive environment to benefit their members physical mental and emotional wellbeing. Project Manager for the extension, John Bowler explained, “We had a pretty basic shed here and we thought if we could have a clean meeting room and a clean work environment it would be of great benefit to us.” In addition to the funding grant John ensured the support from local businesses with donations and competitive pricing has enabled the great facility to be completed. “Everyone has come together to help us out. It is

Due to the extension, the Borenore Nashdale Mens’ Shed were able to make a few more positions available within the shed for some new members, which all existing members are excited about. John continued, “The value this extension has added to the shed is enormous, it gives us the ability to provide an environment where men can come to interact, talk over their issues where there is no prejudice, no bias, they can come here and talk about what they want, and that’s what Mens’ Shed is all about.”

DROUGHT-AFFECTED FARMERS The Australian Government is continuing to support our farmers and their communities with news this week they will have access to more support, more funding, less red tape and an increase in services. A new support package will deliver nearly $100 million to droughthit communities, which is on top of more than $7.2 billion in drought support funding already provided by the Government the biggest drought support effort in Australia’s history. Supporting drought affected communities remains the most urgent priority and it is delivering $33 million to resume the Drought Community Support Initiative, which will deliver up to $3000 to eligible farming households experiencing hardship due to drought. We are providing a $13 million extension to the Drought Community Program to deliver support at the local government level where it counts. This latest package of measures will deliver an immediate economic stimulus at the local level as well as jobs for people whose work has been impacted by this prolonged drought. Furthermore, there will be less effort up front when applying for Farm Household Allowance. Couples will only have to tell their story once. This will be a significant step in farmer assistance because 80 per cent of FHA recipients have a partner. This one change is expected to have a substantial positive effect on claim handling times. NDIS WORKSHOP COMES TO ORANGE

The new Orange Anglican Grammar School leadership team for 2020 was announced last week

People with disability in the Central West are invited to share their experiences with the National Disability Insurance Scheme. An accessible community workshop will be held in Orange at the Orange Ex-Services Club on 22 October, starting at 10am, to discuss ways to improve participants’ experiences with the NDIS. It is just one of seven workshops to be held in regional Australia. The review will lead to the development of an NDIS Participant Service Guarantee, which will set new standards for the time it takes for key steps in the NDIS process. This means there will be shorter, agreed timeframes for people to get their access decision, to have their NDIS plan approved and to have their plan reviewed.

I encourage people with disability, and their families, carers and supporters, to come along to the workshop in Orange to share their views on how to make NDIS processes simpler, quicker and more straight-forward. The NDIS is already proving to be a life-changing social reform for hundreds of thousands of Australians, and the Morrison Government is committed to making it work. The consultations will be open, inclusive and accessible for all members of the community.

Last week I was invited to attend the graduation ceremonies of Orange High School, Kinross Wolaroi and Orange Anglican Grammar School. It is always great to welcome students to Parliament House during school excursions.

These events mark the end of 13 years of education for the students and are wonderful celebrations with plenty of energy, emotion and celebration.

During our September sitting fortnight, I was able to meet with the kids from Orange Public School. The students had plenty of great questions about every aspect of parliamentary and electorate life - and I even fielded a request for a waterslide at Cudal Pool!

I’d also like to pay tribute to the wonderful teachers from all of our local schools for the care and dedication in helping our students get to their HSC and on to the next stage of their lives. Teaching is a very high calling and it must be immensely satisfying to see the next generation of Australians about to make their mark.

Thanks to all the students who took the time to sit and listen and ask a range of intriguing questions.

Congratulations to the many local students who have graduated this week and best of luck as you enter into the HSC exams in the weeks to come.

n 20 August 2019, the Federal Treasurer, Josh Frydenberg, announced music to my ears! He announced that legislation will be introduced so that financial advisers are not permitted to provide advice to a new client without first declaring whether they are classified as ‘independent’ under the law – and, if not, explaining the reasons why they are not independent. For a financial adviser to be able to describe their services as ‘independent’, ‘impartial’, or ‘unbiased’ (or even words of a “similar import”, such as ‘independently owned’ or ‘nonaligned’) there are certain conditions that must be met. These conditions are described in section 923A of Corporations Act, otherwise known as ‘the independence law’, which lists the obstacles that prevent independence, including: • receipt of commissions, • c onflicted remuneration (such as fees calculated on the volume of business placed, also known as ‘asset fees’), and • associations with product issuers. There is already nothing preventing a client from asking a financial adviser if they are independent. However, consumers

the conflicts that prevent the adviser from being independent under the law. If I were a consumer, I would want to know these things! In many cases, people who get financial advice from a conflicted source are not necessarily getting bad advice. Often the strategic advice is spot on, but it’s then compromised by using expensive products or the acceptance of commissions that lead to the cost of implementing that advice being exorbitant and costing the client a fortune more than necessary in the long run! No system is ever going to be perfect, but if I was looking to someone for financial advice, I’d want that advice to independent… that’s why I practice what I preach! If you and I think alike, then let’s have a chat.

don’t know what they don’t know and as Alan Kohler said recently, “The trouble is most people don’t know what a percentage means.” The new legislation will be introduced to Parliament by 30 June next year and will ensure any adviser who does not meet the requirements set out above will – before providing advice – be required to bring that fact to the client’s attention and to explain, prominently, clearly and concisely, why that is so. What this means is that from 30 June next year, advisers who are not classified as independent under the law will have to explain in writing the reasons why they are not independent. Why is this so important? It’s because conflicts of interest have been identified as “deep-seated issues” at the heart of the many instances of poor advice uncovered during the Royal Commission. Commissioner Hayne found the “flawed premise” that conflicts can be managed is, in fact, the real problem. Under existing laws, an adviser is required to ‘manage’ conflicts of interest and disclose, in general terms, certain information about the advice provider. However, there is no requirement for an adviser to bring to the client’s attention

The End Of The World? The R.E.M. song was a cracker, but off the mark, both in 1999 and 2019. Can you remember back to 1999, when all we read about was how everything was going to turn to, well, you know, when the Y2K bug took hold of planet earth? The worst case scenario was everything would basically shut down and we’d back in the land of the caveman. Long story short, it was all just a big puff of wind. Barely anything happened. I think I had to reset my clock radio. My favourite part of this story was the competition Sydney Radio station 2MMM ran, regarding which song they’d play as the first tune of the new millennium, if indeed they were still on the air! From our ‘world’s best’ Sydney fireworks campout spot at Cremorne Point, we were tuned in at midnight 2000 as they cheekily played “It’s The End Of The World As We Know It” by REM. All for nothing. Life went on. Well played Y2K doomsday people. Cut to September 2019, and again It’s The End Of The World As We Know It for the guy typing this column. Wooooo Hooooo! The last kid in our tribe just attended his final day of school! He hasn’t exactly been the highest-of-maintenance child on his journey from paddock to plate, and we are so enormously proud of him and everything he’s done. But there’s a funny sense of relief and ambiguity as we contemplate yet another part of our lives that’s done and dusted. I can still hear those first screams from kid #1 as he popped out all those years ago – what happened to all that time? I must have blinked. Doing some quick math says we’ve paid 42 years of (preschool to Year 12) combined school fees for three kids. Whilst the sting of University fees and associated costs

will still be with us for probably another half a decade, the ‘graduation’ for the mum and the dad is just as important as the one for the kid walking down the carpet to receive his honorary diploma. There’s a pretty big pile of teachers, mentors, instructors, ‘wingmen’ and associates who all deserve hearty pats on the back and hugs for everything they’ve done above-and-beyond the call of duty to help see those kids through their schooling years. If you’re reading this and you made a contribution to any graduating kid this week, then give yourself a hug. They made it. I’m sure everyone else doing the woohoo this week would be thinking the same thing. I reckon that’s one of the best things with giving your kids a country education – everyone who has an effect on them is close, on tap, available and immersed in the town and the lives of everyone around them. A host of ‘lasts’ for us. The last school lunch, the last ironing of a white school shirt, no more school shoes, or textbooks, or A4 pads of ruled paper, no more ‘tidy up your room, mate’, no more ‘hurry up buddy, you’ll be late’. Are we supposed to be sad and reminiscent about (as Cat Stevens would say) the Days of The Ol’ School Yard, or is it just pigeonholed as another part of life shifted off to the backbench? This year saw us complete the Wall of Fame in our home office, with 42 individual framed photos in three lines of the tin lids on the wall, each from pre-school to Year 12. We’ve knocked. It’s over. Mic drop. Relief. Elation. Celebration. Uncertainty. Sadness. No regret. In summary, a cumulative 42 years of education becomes one smiley face emoji. .

LINKER PROGRAM Last month it was a real honour to launch Barnardos evaluation and documentary film for their Domestic Violence Linker Program in Orange. It was great to meet the passionate team behind the 24/7 accessible assistance being provided by this lead agency, in collaboration with other non-government organisations, for women in need of temporary housing and access to support services. Thank you for inviting me to be part of the launch and for the wonderful service you provide the community.

ORANGE HOCKEY Last month I met with representatives of Hockey NSW, Orange Hockey Inc. and Orange City Council to discuss future development of their sporting infrastructure. Expansion is required to accommodate growth of hockey in Orange, which already has a high participation rate, with more than 2,000 players presently using the Moad Street complex which is being used 7 days a week. I look forward to seeing what we can do to support this fantastic sport.

ORANGE PURLERS

Each year, the 29th September holds a special significance for police throughout Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and the Solomon Islands. On this day police to pause to honour officers whose lives have been cut short while performing their duty as a police officer.

Recently in Parliament I recognised The Orange Purlers, a group who have been gathering for more than a decade to knit and crochet a variety of items which they donate to a number of local and international organisations.

As a former Police Prosecutor I strongly believe in the importance of this day to recognise those who lost their lives to while keeping their community safe. This year I attended the service at St Barnabas Anglican Church.

GOOD LUCK HSC STUDENTS

This group has been meeting and knitting for more than a decade now, and in this time they’ve made a huge difference just by doing what they love. This year alone they’ve already made 428 knitted wraps which they’ve donated to organisations including Lyndon Women’s Program, Ronald McDonald House and Mission Australia’s Benjamin Gove Aged Care. They also produce specific items for those suffering brain injuries and they also send neck warmers, beanies and other wearable items to the Middle East via ‘Wrap with Love’. Orange Purlers will gladly take donations to assist in purchasing much needed wool to keep knitting these items for those in need. Keep up the great work!

RECOGNITION STATEMENT: PETER BRUS Last week I attended Orange High School’s Year 12 final assembly. The Performing Arts Centre was packed with family and friends to share this occasion with students. It won’t be long until their written exams commence and I wish all students the very best. The raffle is to raise much needed funds for the Bloomfield Hospital Auxiliary, which helps support those on campus. Volunteer and Publicity Officer, Tania O’Donahue explained, “Recently we had someone who was a fair distance from home on the Bloomfield campus, we helped provide money for their family to stay in accommodation whilst they were in Orange. Generally, the funds are there for what is needed. We also

Am I going to Em’s house today? — BY JONATHAN ROE —

There is rarely a morning that goes by that my three-year-old son Leo doesn’t eagerly ask, “Am I going to Em’s house today?” There are often tears on the days he is told no and I can’t blame really him.

eo has been attending Emily Thompson’s Magnolia Tree Family Day Care for the past 18 months, and my wife and I can’t believe how lucky we are to have found her. So it came as no surprise to us when we heard Emily had been named the regional winner of the Family Day Australia 2019 Excellence in Family Day Care Awards. I see first-hand the work Emily puts in looking after Leo and the happy little tribe of kids in her care. Em makes each day full of adventure; whether it’s being superheroes or pirates, playing in the garden, excursions to the post office or park, cooking or running make-believe ice cream stores. But more than just playing, Em structures each day around themes, taking cues from the kids’ interests and infusing their play with science, geography, literacy and always a focus on Indigenous perspectives. One day Leo came home with a lasagne they had made using vegetables picked in Em’s Garden, because they were learning about Italy. Last week it was ‘Letter Q Week’ where

they learnt about queens, quokkas, did a quiz and cooked quiche! (She somehow gets him to eat things he just won’t touch at home) Early childhood education seems such a natural fit for Emily, but it has been a relatively new career change. Before moving to Orange from Wollongong, she was actually a nurse and then forensic pathologist working in and histopathology lab. Emily and her husband Michael, an industrial electrician, moved here ten years ago to take up a mining job. It was only when her daughter Charlotte was diagnosed with autism five years ago that she turned to teaching. “When Charlotte was in kindergarten her beautiful teacher called us in and said we need to talk about Charlotte… and that was the first time I’d ever heard about autism and we had no idea what to do,” said Emily. “I eventually said to Michael that I think I want to go do a teaching degree, not necessarily to teach but to understand Charlotte and to work out what we can do from our end to help her. “I went and enrolled in a teaching degree and

once I started doing it I realised that teaching may or may not be for me but I loved the early childhood education part of it and that’s how I ended up in family day care.” Emily is currently studying a Diploma of Early Childhood around the three days a week she operates her family day care. The job’s hours suit Emily, whose younger daughter Matilda is also part of the group and enjoys the extra company at home. “I love it, every single day I’m happy and excited for work,” said Em, who was overwhelmed to have been nominated for this award, let alone names regional winner. “Being nominated was beautiful! A couple of the parents chose to share their nomination form with me and it was just absolutely beautiful! I sat there and cried while I read them!” Emily is among 68 regional winners across Australia. Four finalists will be chosen for a shot at being named national winner at an awards ceremony in Hobart later this year. “It is an unlikely thing to happen, but I’m so happy with what I’ve achieved so far,” said Emily.

How do we look after our gardens for Spring and Summer during a drought? The arrival of Day Light Saving time next weekend has been chosen as the date when Orange will move to Level 5 Water restrictions. I visited Mary Ann Nein at Thomson’s Garden Centre to seek her advice about how to look after our gardens and our lawns at this time of year when we want them to look at their best. What Level 5 Water Restrictions mean for our gardens • Watering is only allowed for one hour one day a week (Sunday 6 – 7pm) • No sprinklers, micro-sprays, or soaker hoses. Instead use buckets, watering cans, drip system or a hand-held hose with a trigger nozzle for 30 minutes. during that single watering period • No filling or topping up water features • No watering lawns • No watering new turf Plants that do well in dry conditions are ornamental grasses like Lomandras, and banksias, proteas, bottle brushes and grevilleas. The latter two also attract birds and bees. Frost hardy succulents also work well in Orange’s climate. Mary Anne told me ‘when it does rain, check how well the rain has soaked in and use a wetting agent like Seasol to retain the moisture. Mulch should be used on all garden beds. Put wet mulch on wet ground as it regulates the soil temperature. The main thing to do is prioritise which plants to water. Which do you want to save? Plants do well with one good watering a week. Water well not often and target the watering using a hand-held hose with a trigger nozzle for 30 minutes’. It is a good idea to collect your shower water in a bucket while waiting for the water to warm up, and this water can be used in the garden, but don’t use soapy water from the shower in the garden. When mowing the lawn don’t mow it too low. Use Seasol on the lawn. Weeds may grow in the bald patches of your lawn, in which case use a broad leaf herbicide. The grass will come back after rain. Essentially, ‘old fashioned’ methods work well. In Orange’s climate of cold nights the normal advice is not to plant tomatoes until after the Melbourne Cup. If in doubt ask advice from the very helpful horticulturalists at Thomson’s Garden Centre, 213 McLachlan Street, Orange. 28

How to get the BEST out of OUR COUNCILS with AMANDA SPALDING

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES – COUNCILLORS The roles and responsibilities of the Mayor, Councillors and the General Manager were clarified in changes to the Local Government Act in 2016. This column looks at the roles and responsibilities of Councillors.

In NSW Councillors comprise the governing body of a council in the same way that a Board of Directors is the governing body of a corporation.

The governing body is required to consult with the general manager in directing and controlling the affairs of the council.

The Role of Councillors as the Governing Body includes: • to direct and control the affairs of the council in accordance with this Act, • to provide effective civic leadership to the local community, to ensure as far as possible the financial sustainability of the council, • to develop and endorse the community strategic plan, delivery program and other strategic plans, programs, strategies and policies of the council, • to determine and adopt a rating and revenue policy and operational plans that support the optimal allocation of the council’s resources to implement the strategic plans of the council and for the benefit of the local area, • to keep under review the performance of the council, including service delivery, • to make decisions necessary for the proper exercise of the council’s regulatory functions, • to determine the process for appointment of the general manager by the council and to monitor the general manager’s performance, • to determine the senior staff positions within the organisation structure of the council, • to consult regularly with community organisations and other key stakeholders and keep them informed of the council’s decisions and activities, • to be responsible for ensuring that the council acts honestly, efficiently and appropriately. As members of the governing body, and in the interests of ensuring the organisation operates effectively to achieve the best outcomes for the community, councillors should endeavour to work constructively with council staff that are responsible for implementing council decisions.

The role of individual councillors is: 1. to be an active and contributing member of the governing body, 2. t o make considered and well informed decisions as a member of the governing body, 3. to participate in the development of the integrated planning and reporting framework, 4. to represent the collective interests of residents, ratepayers and the local community, 5. to facilitate communication between the local community and the governing body, 6. to uphold and represent accurately the policies and decisions of the governing body, 7. t o make all reasonable efforts to acquire and maintain the skills necessary to perform the role of a councillor. A councillor is accountable to the local community for the performance of the council. Having worked in local government in NSW for many years I have seen some Councillors walk into meetings of Council opening the envelope containing the Council meeting papers, so they clearly have not read them beforehand, and would have had difficulty fulfilling role 2 above - to make considered and well informed decisions as a member of the governing body. Role number 6, a new addition in 2016 - to uphold and represent accurately the policies and decisions of the governing body - was controversial as it was felt by some to reduce the ability of Councillors to express their opposition. This comes from the concept that the governing body acts like a Board of Directors. It is explained further in the Office of Local Government 2017 Handbook: ‘While councillors are free, subject to their obligations under the council’s Code of Conduct, to advocate

a position on matters that are before the council for a decision, once a decision has been made they are required to ‘uphold’ the policies and decisions of the council. The requirement to uphold the policies and decisions of the council should be read in the context of the implied freedom of political communication under the Australian Constitution. In practical terms, councillors remain free to speak about the policies and decisions of the council, but they must accept and abide by them and must not misrepresent them.’ Number 7 proposes Councils’ induction and professional development programs to include: • Pre-election candidate sessions (not mandatory, but encouraged) – these are to ensure prospective candidates are aware of what will be expected of them if elected • Mandatory Induction program – this aims to equip mayors and councillors with the information they need to perform their role effectively over the first few months and has a particular focus on building positive, collaborative relationships between councillors and with staff • Mandatory Professional development program – this is to be developed in consultation with all councillors and delivered over the term of the council to build the skills, knowledge and personal attributes necessary to be an effective mayor or councillor. On Saturday 19th October Orange City Council, in conjunction with the Australian Local Government Women’s Association (ALGWA) will host an event encouraging women to put their hands up and run for local council in 2020. The day will see a number of guest speakers present their stories and political experiences. Sunday 6 October sees the Sunday Sessions at The Bowlo celebrating the October long weekend, daylight savings, the NRL Grand Final and great Aussie music with the Bogans Heroes. The Sunday Sessions are going to be taking a break after this sensational show so make the most of it and get to the Canowindra Community Bowls and Recreation Club for some free live music! The band will hit the stage from 3pm - 7pm followed by the NRL Grand Final. Let’s meet Bogan’s Heroes! What are we to expect from the Bogans Heroes at the Sunday Session at The Bowlo? You can expect to see the premier and hardest working live music act in the Central West. We are excited to be invited to the Bowlo for the Sunday Session. We might look scruffy, but we are tight and polished crowd pleasers. What do you categorise as the most Bogan Aussie song on your set list? We have just released an EP with 4 original songs, which are all instant Bogan classics, but I would say ‘Am I Ever Gunna See Your Face Again’ (with requisite sing along bits) probably tops the chart for the most Bogan Aussie song What song is the number one killer hit on your list that gets everyone up for a dance? Stevie Wright’s Evie Part 1. What is the best part about playing gigs in rural Australia and of course small communities like Canowindra? The best part is that we play music that appeals to the audience and are songs that people know and love. Accordingly, we treat the music and our audience with tremendous respect and affection, which is returned to us. Small rural communities

are often starved for live music and to be a professional and kicking local band that works hard, doesn’t mind travelling, plays all night and is usually free for the punters is a win. We happily play benefit shows that support local communities, drought relief and other good causes and provide some distraction and enjoyment for a short while at least for people who are doing it tough day in and day out. We are proud to do this and take this part of the gig seriously. Bogans Heroes is a fantastic concept for a great cover band how did it all begin? We have been working as a band for over two years now. The concept came from our spiritual leader and adviser in all things Bogan, Mick Dinkum. We don’t want to be known as a ‘tribute’ band that does just AC/DC or whatever but we have grown up in the era of Australian pub rock, have paid our dues both as punters and as musicians and tip our beanies to the guys and girls that have gone before us and are still grinding it out in an industry that faces more challenges as each day passes. Truly we stand on the shoulders of giants. Is it all Aussie music or do you expand into some international tunes? If so what is in the Bogan category? The idea is that it is all Aussie music and we make that clear although we still get asked frequently, if not always, to play The Gambler, Copperhead Road and any number of other faves but we politely decline. There are Aussie standards too that we tend to stay clear of and leave them for others to do. We have a deep love of the pioneers so sprinkle some of the lesser-known artists through our sets. However, if we are asked to play at a function that has a theme we will happily oblige the organisers, for instance recently we did a Woodstock Revival show for a private function at Woodstock where we pulled out some tunes from the original festival. The Bogan category contains tunes from AC/DC, Angels, Rose Tattoo, Radiators, Billy Thorpe, Daddy Cool, Chain, Screaming Jets, Easybeats as well as some Countdown Classics, TMG and John Paul Young.

– NEW EXHIBITION FROM

RHONDA CAMPBELL

Local artist Rhonda Campbell is about to launch a new exhibition of her abstract landscapes at the Peisley Street Gallery. ‘Notes from the Wetland,’ an exhibition of original paintings and printmaking, will open this Sunday 6 October and run until 2 November. There will be an official opening night from 6pm on Thursday 10 October. Rhonda is a lifelong artist and said the inspiration for this exhibition came from her travels around Australia. RAPT kick off Summer concert series

It feels like Spring has finally arrived and to celebrate the return of the warmer months JAM Orange have put together series of three concerts featuring independent acoustic acts supported by local favourites. This Sunday JAM Orange welcomes RAPT to the Orange Regional Conservatorium auditorium with their freewheeling jazz-edged folk, blues, gospel sound. Based in Sydney, RAPT are an acoustic four-piece with sophisticated arrangements, strong and intricate vocal harmonies and diverse instrumentation. Their music is uplifting and instantly appealing and features guitars, double bass, mandolin, banjo and bouzouki. RAPT are Rosie McDonald (vocals, guitar, bouzouki), Ann Palumbo (vocals, guitar, mandolin, double bass), Paul Laszlo

(vocals, banjo, double bass) and Nigel Lever (vocals, mandolin, Octave mandolin, guitar). Supporting RAPT will be local singer/songwriter James Rutten who has become a regular feature at gigs around Orange and the Central West. Born and raised in Armidale, James grew up around music: His father played classical guitar and his mother taught him piano from very young age. James describes his music as contemporary folk and his songwriting often wanders into areas not commonly explored by popular music. He is a talented guitarist and an enthusiastic performer with wellcrafted original songs. Be sure to catch RAPT and James Rutten this Sunday afternoon (2 -5pm) at the Orange Regional Conservatorium auditorium.

KEVIN HINES In a new initiative for the Orange Art Society, each month they will feature the work of a member artist — meet Kelvin Hines! A talented local artist Kelvin has a passion for pencils drawings. His love of art started at school when he attended De La Salle College with his inspirations coming from different artist’s including, Maurits Cornellis Escher. His work has won numerous awards and his pieces have featured in various local exhibitions. Kelvin is currently being kept busy with commissioned requests for his unusual and unique style of art. Now semi-retired from his own company, and raising three children, Kelvin now has more time to focus on his passion. “The game has been described as a combination of chess and billiards, played on grass,” says Rik Mills of Croquet, a sport he has become a little obsessed with in the past eight years. “It is a very skilful game, it makes you think, makes you use your brain and you have good people around to play with.”

Rik, a former medical laboratory scientist, discovered croquet through friends and has since been making up for lost time.

At the Orange Croquet Club they play two different variant of the game: Golf Croquet and the more involved Association Croquet — both of which are played internationally.

“Basically, when I retired, I did a bit of woodworking down at the Guildry, and one of the members there said, ‘Why don’t you come and try croquet?’ And so I turned up here one day and I’ve been playing three times a week just about ever since!” Croquet is a simple game to describe, but the game is far from simple. In essence, it involves using a mallet to hit balls through hoops placed on a grass court, but croquet requires a skill, strategy and cunning. “People think it is a simple game; it is not,” said Rik. We get people coming along and trying it and they suddenly realise that it is not as simple as it

As well as the challenges the game presents, Rik said there is good camaraderie in the club and with players at tournaments further afield. “There is the option to play in other towns,” he said. “A couple times a year we go down to Bathurst and they come up to us I went up to Urunga earlier this year to play. “Come along and try it! ABATTOIR PICNIC There was a time when Rogers Meats abattoir, on Clergate Road just outside Orange, employed a considerable number of people. The annual picnic for employees and their families was a keenly anticipated event. The November 1959 picnic was held at Towac Park Racecourse with over 500 adults and 1000 children attending and 3000 ice-creams were served. There were sports, including a ladies’ tug of war, and other events. Boys from Buena Vista Boys’ Home were guests for the day. The photo shows just a small section of the crowd. DEBATERS DO BATTLE

A supportive group of Rotarians and parents were in attendance to watch the final of the Dudley Debating Cup last Thursday evening between Orange High School and Kinross Wolaroi in the Greenhouse Function Room. The debate, which is sponsored by Dudley Private Hospital and hosted by the Rotary Club of Orange North is an annual fixture on the club’s calendar. Co-ordinator, Steve Jackson said the debate provided students with a voice on a range of topics and aided students in their criticalthinking skills. Following the preliminary debates which were held at Molong Central School in early September both Kinross Wolaroi and Orange High successfully made it through to the final. Accomplished adjudicator, Lin Eccleston indicated that during the course of the final there were some passionate arguments and rebuttals on both sides as the teams debated the

statement, ‘That students have the right to take part in public protests during school hours’. After some consideration Lin Eccleston awarded the debate to Orange High School who had argued the negative case. Apart from the Dudley Cup which they will hold for the next year, Orange High also received a cheque for $500-00 while runners-up Kinross Wolaroi received $250-00. District Governor, John McKenzie from the Rotary Club of Orange North presented the cup and cheque to the winners and congratulated them on their outstanding debating skills while President Terry Hinchcliff presented all debaters with a certificate on behalf of the Rotary Club of Orange North.

Music Excellence James Sheahan Catholic High School students, Mitchell Anderson and Noah Bartlett have recently been nominated for ‘Encore’ for their outstanding HSC music performances. Encore is an NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) program recognising a limited number of outstanding HSC Music performances and compositions. This is a great honour and a reflection of their musical talent and the hard work they have put into developing their gifts. NESA will go on to choose around 20 students to showcase their abilities at a concert in Sydney next March. The school congratulates Mitch and Noah who have studied Music 1 under the guidance of teachers, Mrs. Froukje Werlemann and Mrs. Amy Stevens. Congratulations Mitchell & Noah!

I know full well the Christian I was yesterday was sub-par: I lost it at my children, mumbled under my breath when my husband went to bed early after his long shift, rolled my eyes at someone’s “helpful advice” and jumped on the scales that night wishing I was thinner. The Christian I was today was pretty average too and I’m not holding my breath that the Christian I’ll be tomorrow will be any better. But I strive to be a better Christian, I strive to be more like Christ every day. But each time I miss the mark I am reminded just how much I need Jesus because even when I try my very best I still fall so very short. But you may ask why would anyone want to be more like Jesus anyway? Isn’t he the one who ended strung up on a cross? Yes, but you have to know his back story by reading one of the gospels. So maybe grab a bible and flick to the Gospel of Mark and see who me and many other Christians are striving to be like. (PS the sequel is pretty good too)

SASSY WINES Arneis 2016

A rare variety of grape from the Italian province of Piedmont Arneis apparently mean “Little Rascal” in the local dialect – But Rob and Felicia Coles of Sassy Wines have found it anything but. One of the only vineyards in Australia producing this variety Sassy Wines’ vineyard between Orange and Lucknow is very similar to the rolling hills and cool climate of the grape’s homeland. The wine it produces has a floral nose with aromas of lemons, flowers and honeysuckle. The palate holds flavour of pear, citrus, almond and bush honey finishing with a lemon minerality. Sassy Wines Arneis loves to pair with seafood, pasta dishes and chicken. The crisp refreshing nature of this little rascal is perfect as the weather warms, enjoying the sun on the back deck or watching it set on a balmy evening.
