In this issue, we chat to him about design generally, some of his career highlights, which are quite impressive, and how he stays inspired.

It’s another great issue of OC Life this week and I hope you enjoy every page, and I hope you get among the prizes on our Competition page. I have a little bit of space to play with so let me muse a bit.

I’ve mentioned in the past how I never seem to be able to understand how the weather temperature can be described as one thing but feels like something else. For me the temperature is the temperature and that’s it, period. That said, I heard a business presentation recently where a variety of so-called data was used to make a case for the particular industry being discussed. Now I’m not disputing the data, even though I take such data with a grain of salt, but what did strike me was that even though the data said one thing, I’m certain that if you asked the people that it referred to, they have a different view. My guess would be that in all likelihood most would say that may be what the figures say but it certainly doesn’t “feel” like that is what’s happening out there. I’ve been accused at times of thinking too much, but I find stuff like this fascinating, sometimes frustrating. As people, when they tell us it’s 1 degree but feels like minus 5, what clothes do we put on? When the government tells us the economy is strong while people all around us are clearly struggling, which should we respond to. There is all manner of examples out there that I could raise but I won’t. I guess my point in saying all this, is that maybe we should consider a bit more just how people are feeling about a particular topic rather than just looking at data or statistics. I’m pretty sure that a lot of the statistics, research, data etc. that big companies, governments etc. thrive on is pretty useless in a lot of cases. I’m more a street-smart type of person and so far, this method has served me pretty well.

Kinross Wolaroi School is set to receive a new look regarding student uniforms by 2021, the school is commencing the landmark project of reviewing and re-designing with the process being led by internationally recognised Australian Designer and wool ambassador, Jonathan Ward.

ncredibly, the current uniform is an amalgamation of the old PLC uniforms and the Wolaroi College, which dates back to 1975. Principal Dr Andrew Parry explained, “We are interested in having a uniform that is more contemporary, something that will really suit the needs of our children and present a lovely image for the school. It’s an exciting time for the school, there is a lot of innovation and a lot of development happening, and as we launch into our new and exciting period it’s an opportunity for us to show how we display ourselves. “We are excited that we have engaged with Jonathan Ward, he has an outstanding reputation in the field of design including school uniform and high-end fashion. We have an opportunity to do something unique and very special which reflects who we are and what we aspire to be, for us to be able to partner with Jonathan as we go on this mission, is extremely exciting.” The uniform process is in its early stages, though Jonathan promises it to be fantastic. “It’s going to be a long, but very thorough process, It’s really important that the uniform sets a great handwriting for the location and the rural demographic that the school draws from, and it’s a uniform for the next 20 years,” said Jonathan. “Next year will be 45 years since the amalgamation and uniforms, we need to look at the students of today and realise they aren’t the students of 20-30 years ago, they 4

are different build, different backgrounds, they mature quicker, there’s so many things you’ve got to look at. “What I’d like to be able to do is to connect the boys and the girls a little more with the uniform.” It’s not every day, a leading fashion designer steps off the plane in Orange. So, where did it all begin for Jonathan? We wanted to dig a little deeper and understand where his passion began. Jonathan grew up on a farm in Tottenham and boarded at Trinity (Sydney) from 10 years old, whilst his sister attended Kinross Wolaroi School. “As a child I could always draw, I was always sketching on the school bus. Along with that, having a Mother who had things made for Picnic Races, I used to get the scraps of her evening gowns and make up little garments for my sister’s barbie dolls,” said Jonathan. “I think growing up on a sheep and cattle property with wool and wheat, I always had a great passion for wool, and I followed that all the way through my career, even up to today where, I am an ambassador of Australian Wool Innovation.” Once Jonathan finished his education he returned home to work on the farm for a few years. He then had the opportunity to submit his sketches and ideas to a design college in Sydney. The College took them straight away without Jonathan having to apply or submit an exam. “Somebody said to me once, everybody

I realised I had a gift and I needed to follow that dream.” in life is born with a gift, some people go through their whole life and never realise what their gift is. I realised I had a gift and I needed to follow that dream.” Since then, Jonathan has had an incredible career, from meeting Princess Diana and Audrey Hepburn, to designing for the Paralympics and being Executive Designer at RM Williams for 15 years, he’s done it all. “I am proud of everything I have done, though what I think I am most proud of is that I have worked with people from all walks of life and all backgrounds, from Royalty right down to the humblest of people. I’ve had a career in high end couture, with special occasion, celebrities like Nicole Kidman and all sorts of amazing people. In saying that I’ve also been involved in many weddings for country people and that’s been great. I think, the diversity of my career, and to give back to the rural community,

expanding RM Williams as a brand for 15 years, turning it into a family brand so that there was not just clothing for work, but also something for special occasions. It was a brand significant for rural people and often most people in the city aspire to such a nice brand.” Jonathan has worked with many of Australia’s corporate elite over the years, however in his pioneering days he spent significant time abroad, training at the Parsons College of Art Design in New York and working with global international fashion houses including Yves Saint Laurent, amongst others. With over 30 years in the industry, where does Jonathan get his inspiration from you ask? “I’m a very visual person.. I look at everything. I’m inspired by colour, line and direction of design, but also the people I work around and the jobs that I have give me opportunity to bring my experience to the table.” To the younger generation, Jonathan says, “Be true to yourself, live and look and learn every day of your life. I realised that I had something that I would like to pursue, and I had to see if it was the dream I should follow, and it has been.” “There’s been a lot of highlights, it’s taken me all over the world. The one thing it hasn’t taken out of me and what I do love the most, is growing up in the country and having my rural roots as a person, I think it’s helped me in great stead to communicate and understand.”

HALF GLASS FULL IS BETTER What a difference a bit of sunshine and warmer weather does for our spirits, especially here in Orange. I suspect a lot of people have been feeling like me lately, negotiating the doom and gloom of winter, battling the local business environment, feeling the effects of the drought, worrying about the talk of recession and generally looking for those little rays of sunshine in amongst it all. Well, last weekend delivered a few wonderful gems for me. My wife and I had some shopping to do, that reminds me, did I tell you we’re doing a NZ Cruise for our 50th Wedding Anniversary in a week or so? I’ve never had a passport before this.

JEREMY L’ESTRANGE “My favourite Childhood memory would have to be fishing with my Dad out on the Condo river, I remember I caught a cod and my sister was scared of it, that’s when I knew I would love fishing. *laughs* I enjoy the relaxation that comes with it and spending time with friends and family while you’re doing it- there’s nothing better… unless it’s chocolate. I’ve got a serious

sweet tooth and I’m obsessed with literally any type of chocolate; dark, white, they are amazing, though my favourite has to be anything caramel. I love playing soccer with my mates and enjoy a bit of tennis as well. In my spare time you’ll probably find me drawing or animating things on my computer. I’m currently in Year 11, nearly Year

12 and although I’m not entirely sure of what I want to be, I’m leaning towards something in the field of Neuroscience, I find it really interesting and there is a lot of potential for work in that field. In 10 years, I hope to have completed University, have a good job and sneak a little overseas trip to the U.S or Europe in there somewhere.”

I guess what I’m trying to say with all this is, what a difference it makes when people are feeling good about things. It’s pretty obvious isn’t it, when we feel good about ourselves, the world looks so much better. Let me therefore encourage you to think about how you can make someone’s day better today, tomorrow and often. Make it a practice to brighten someone else’s day. If you do, I guarantee your day will be brighter too. Let me give you another piece of advice that I gave to myself after last weekend, advice you may like to consider as well. I foolishly took some time to read a whole lot of Facebook comments about various issues on the CWD Facebook page. What a mistake that was! Talk about a lot of sad, angry and unhappy people…it was so depressing! I’m not going to do that anymore. Far too much half glass empty stuff for my liking. I’m going to make more of the half glass full stuff and focus on that. I’m always happier when I do.

Back to the shopping, we made some reasonable purchases from three local shops and at each one, I noticed they looked busy. I asked how their morning had been and each said Very Busy! Those are words that are music to the ears of any business owner. Just moving around town, it was pretty obvious how the mood and vibe in the street was just so different, clearly impacted mainly by the glorious weather. People were in summer clothing, many had a spring in their step and the whole scene presented such a different picture to what we’ve seen so often through winter.

HOW I GET MY KICKS ...I suppose that the trickier they are the more fun I find them...

Will Brennan FURNITURE MAKER — BY JONATHAN ROE —

“I suppose I’ve just always been a maker of stuff,” says Will Brennan, sitting in the old apple storage shed that is now home to his custom furniture workshop.

ill — who was born in Warren, but grew up here in Orange — went off to get a degree in agribusiness after school and then furthered his study, adding a Masters in Mining Engineering while working out at Cadia. But something kept drawing him back to the idea of working with his hands. So, four years ago, he took the leap and went into furniture

making full time. “Yeah, I think my parents thought I was pretty mad having two degrees behind me and then venturing into this!” said Will. “But at the same time, I think they knew this was something I wanted and they were really supportive.” Will’s very first piece of furniture was actually a dining table he made for his parents in the backyard. It was a simple steel frame and timber top design, but then a few more items

followed, and it just grew. “The first couple of tables I made were just in the backyard and then eventually I got a little garage, a friend’s car garage and then slowly evolved to this,” said Will, gesturing to the large, well-equipped workshop space he now rents. “It just sort of morphed and snowballed slowly but surely into bigger and better things. I don’t know how it happened looking back. I wish I could give you a clearer description of how that went but I’ve now been four years full-time in business.” There is always a bit of risk moving from doing something as a hobby to doing it as your main source of income and Will admits it wasn’t always easy. “It was slow; it was a real grind every day. You know, you get up try and sell, doorknock, just get as much out there as possible. I’ve had plenty of mistakes along the way and I’ll probably have more to come,” said Will. “There have definitely been days where you question what you’re doing. I think with any business, you always hope to be busier, but then when you actually stop and smell the roses you realise that you’re busier than you were last week or two months ago or a year ago. It just takes time to stop and realise it. “I think one thing that really helped me take the leap is my wife. You know, I wouldn’t have been able to do it on my own, so she’s been pretty solid throughout the whole thing.” Will’s work ranges from making chopping boards right through to bathroom vanities, chairs, tables, full dining suites, commercial pub fit outs… in fact there’s not much he’ll say no too! “Everything! The more curly the better. I suppose that the trickier they are the more fun I find them. Like, I made a coffee cart on

wheels that went to Sydney and I’ll be making a couch in January. Any out of the ordinary type stuff I’ll build,” said Will. “A lot of my work is actually people finding things that they love on Instagram or Pinterest that they can’t buy in Australia, or it’s out of their price bracket, or they can’t find the dimensions they need, so then we’ll sit down to design it together and hopefully I’ll give them a finished product that they love.” Speaking of Instagram, it is worth a look at Will’s own feed. It seems too much time alone in the workshop can lead to strange behaviours being caught on video. Not that Will may be alone too much longer, as he is hoping to put someone on his payroll by the end of the year. “We’re starting to get some traction now, getting good clients into Sydney, more commercial jobs coming through. So, hopefully I’ll be putting a person on in the next few months, which is exciting… and scary!” Will has some big dreams for his small business and — one day — would love to see his work heading into overseas markets or sold through his own shopfront. But for now, he is happy for the chance to do something he loves. “I love making stuff. There is a fun creative side to it, you know, and nothing I make is the same, everything just turns into a puzzle of how you’re going to make it,” said Will. “And when you deliver a piece and people love it and it might even become some sort of family heirloom — my pieces will outlast my lifetime — so it’s pretty cool thinking about that. “And I really love doing it here in Orange. It’s growing and it’s exciting, there are a great group of makers and creative artist around here as well… it’s truly cool!”

THINGS TO AVOID IN YOUR FAMILY LAW MATTER Family Law is a complicated jurisdiction which requires knowledge of property law, business law, tax, superannuation, medical issues and all things relating to children. It is one of the few jurisdictions where one piece of legislation gives the Court the authority to make decisions about so many aspects of people’s lives. Subsequently, it is important to make sure you receive appropriate advice to make sure that you think of everything that applies to your unique circumstances. In order to do that you should avoid the following: 1.

Getting legal advice from someone who has already been through the process. With a significant number of marriages ending in divorce, we all know family members and friends who have separated. Everyone also knows someone who had a terrible experience at Court. Talking to a solicitor who can apply the law to your matter will save you a lot of stress in the long run and allow you to make informed decisions.

Involving the children in adult matters. Children should be kept out of the details of a Family Law matter. While children are perceptive and will have questions, it is important that they are not included in adult matters.

Putting your head in the sand There are time limits that apply in Family Law so you ignore matters to your own detriment. This includes correspondence from your spouse’s solicitor. They will not wait forever for a response from you and may feel that it is necessary to commence proceedings at additional cost when you could have reached an amicable agreement if you had dealt with the matter in a timely fashion.

Choirs raise voices for Alwyn — BY JONATHAN ROE —

The Orange Male Voice Choir are holding a special benefit concert next week to support one of their own.

lwyn Roweth joined the choir in 1983 and has been an active and enthusiastic member over the past 36 years. But now the choir is looking to give back to Alwyn, who is in need of your help. “Alwyn had a quad bike accident a couple of years ago on his farm,” said Orange Male Voice Choir secretary David Woodside. “The bike overturned and pinned him underneath it and as a result of that he has become a quadriplegic.” “He was in a really, really bad way,” added President Don Harvey, “but he has made absolutely fantastic progress. He is back singing with us now and comes to our rehearsals, but this benefit concert is something we’ve had on the

cards a long time to actually do something to assist him.” The Orange Male Voice Choir will be joined by the Cantar Community Choir for the benefit concert at 2pm Sunday, 29 September at the Orange Regional Conservatorium. The two choirs will perform separately and the join together for some showtunes. “The Con holds about 200 people and we are hoping to fill it,” said David. “It will be entry at the door with a banknote donation and there will be an afternoon tea available $2 for tea or coffee $5 with a small plate of cake or slice. All of the proceeds are going to go to Alwyn and family. “The choir just wants to do what it can to raise some funds for his current and future needs.”

PUTTING POVERTY IN PERSPECTIVE

Next term students will be focusing on human wellbeing, so the visit from UN Youth NSW focused particularly on ‘Poverty, Aid and Development.’ Students completed different workshops and discussions to help them better understand the topic and what it means to them, our country and other countries also. UN Youth NSW, Facilitator, Sina Aghamofid explained, “We realise that a lot of them associate poverty with developing nations, so we gave them the realisation that actually three million Australians live in poverty right now, and that’s 12.5% of the population, I think that puts it in perspective for a

It was one of the most violent chapters in Australian rural history: The fight to overturn the longstanding ban on widetoothed shearing combs in the early 1980s saw shearing sheds and pubs become battlegrounds and for four years the wool industry was thrown into chaos.

Now, for the first time, the history of the Australia’s wide comb shearing dispute is documented in a new book released this month. In Three Steel Teeth: Wide Comb Shears and Woolshed Wars, Orange-based writer and former journalist Mark Filmer has documented the industrial chaos that beset the wool industry when a small group of ‘rebel’ shearers sought to overturn the ban on wide-toothed shearing combs. The 13-toothed combs, which were about 2 cm wider than the standardgauge 10-toothed shearing combs, had been outlawed from use in Australia since 1926.

The rebels, led by the late Blayney district shearing contractor Robert White, believed the newer versions of the wide combs were more productive and efficient than the standard 10-toothed combs. However, the Australian Workers’ Union, which tightly regulated the shearing industry in Australia’s eastern states, was strongly opposed to wide combs and fought to prevent them being approved. Mr White and many members of his shearing teams were attacked and bashed several times by union thugs and a national shearers’ strike from March to May 1983 paralysed the wool industry.

The dispute was punctuated by numerous incidents of violence, as disgruntled union shearers raided sheds where ‘rebel’ shearing teams were working and attacked them. There were many fights in country pubs sparked by bitter rivalry between wide comb and narrow comb shearers. There was even an open gun battle between two groups of rival shearers in a sleepy country town in central Victoria. The book, Three Steel Teeth: Wide Comb Shears and Woolshed Wars, is published by Ginninderra Press and can be purchased through Collins Booksellers in Orange.

The 16-year-old has been on the racetrack now for nine years and has state titles and top three finishes in national kart racing competitions to his name. With his first win in the Formula Ford Series, Cody is looking to build on that result when the series heads to Victoria for the final round at the Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit on September 28-30. “I’m really looking forward to Phillip Island; the track is pretty amazing, there are not many types of tracks that are like it in Australia,” said Cody. “The weather down there can be pretty hectic but it is probably one of my favourite tracks— it’s great fun!” Good luck next weekend, Cody!

16-year-old local racer Cody Burcher has earned his first national-level circuit racing win during the Australian Formula Ford Series round at Wakefield Park earlier this month. Cody won the opening race of the weekend (September 7) in tricky conditions as galeforce winds battered the track just outside of Goulburn during qualifying and Race 1. Cody was able to get off to a good start and made his way up to the lead of the race by lap 8, before taking the win by one and half seconds. “I’m absolutely over the moon with that,” said Cody. “It was, realistically, my first win in cars and the best part was that it was a national level win too! It was the highest you can go in this category in Australia!” Cody finishing both races 2 and 3 on the podium, which saw him claim second for the

No one treated like that would be happy or think it was fair, but that is pretty much the way many locals are treating our local businesses, often just in the name of saving a few dollars. As consumers we expect so much from those who serve us, we generally don’t care what it might cost a business owner to provide what we want from them and when we want it, yet in return we give little or nothing, we expect everything and then when we or someone loses a job, or a business closes their doors, we reason they probably shouldn’t have been in business in the first place or they didn’t know what they were doing. It’s a sad and sorry tale isn’t it, but at the end of the day, WE, all of us, have the power to change things if we want to. The power to stop local job losses and stop business closures lies totally with us the shopper, not the business owner, not the Council, not the government, no one else, just the shopper. It really is that simple. Every time we buy something online, we’re in effect, driving another nail into a business owners coffin. It doesn’t have to be that way, does it?

Calling yourself a loyal local is one thing, being a loyal local is something different. It’s the difference between talking the talk and walking the walk. There’s been a lot of emphasis placed on supporting locals over recent times and the current drought and economic situation brings that home even more. I believe there’s more than enough money spent by locals each day to sustain Orange businesses, the problem is it’s not all being spent in Orange businesses. Think about this. Imagine that it required the people of Orange to spend $1 million dollars a day in Orange businesses to keep them profitable and afloat. That is, to minimise job losses, business closures and the like. Now, suppose between us we do spend $1 million dollars a day but $300,000 of that goes to online shopping? Put like that, it’s not hard to appreciate how $300,000 a day of much needed local spending going elsewhere would be impacting on businesses in Orange, and where that could ultimately lead. Imagine if your employer suddenly decided to take 30% off what they pay you and your workmates so they could employ another person who was willing

Australian Ambassador Visits Orange The Australian Ambassador to Nepal Mr Peter Budd recently visited Orange to thank the various members of the Orange Community who have provided great support to Nepal over the past eight years. Specifically, he met Rotarian Robyn Murray, Dr Nicholas Burns and members of their team who have been providing major support for the development of mental health programs in Kathmandu and also in the Maidi District in Nepal. They will be returning to Nepal in November to continue to support mental health initiatives in Nepal. Also involved were members of the Rotary Club of Orange Daybreak who under the leadership of Rotarian Mary Brell OAM have provided essential training in health, education, agriculture and building techniques over the past eight years. President Ray Fleming said he was delighted that the Club had been able to support all these training initiatives which have made a significant difference to the people of Nepal. The education results in the Dhading District of Nepal have shown the greatest improvement of any district in Nepal. Ambassador Budd was formally welcomed to Orange by Mayor Reg Kidd and while here, he explored further opportunities for Orange Daybreak Rotary and other

business and organisations to be involved in Nepal. Rotary District Governor John McKenzie said he was delighted with the contribution Rotary has been able to make in Nepal. John was a member of the agriculture team who visited Nepal last November to assist with developing improved nutrition in Nepal. This team under the leadership of Mary Brell and including Rick Colless past NSW MLC and his wife Geraldine will be returning to Nepal in November. Over the past four years students from Orange who have completed their HSC have visited Nepal and been involved in service activities, on each occasion they have been met by the Ambassador to which it has been said how proud he is of them as young Australians rather than visiting resorts to celebrate the end of their formal schooling. Whilst in Orange the Ambassador met with members of the local Nepali community led by Birendradeep Malla who are heavily involved in a wide variety of local industries.

For the past five years, tractor enthusiasts like Graeme have been getting together to raise funds for Central West children and their families. This year, the Central West Charity Tractor Trek will be held on the 27th, 28th, 29th of September visiting the Western Plains Zoo, Wongarbon, Beni, and Geurie. “Last year it was Molong and this year we’re at Dubbo,” said Graeme. “It’s a three-day thing, just drive around the country venues and country roads, that sort of stuff. I think there’ll be about 24 tractors this year — all shapes and sizes! We just get out and enjoy ourselves!” Although it is a bit of fun, the Central West Charity Tractor Trek Group was created to raise money for those in need. This year they hope to raise $80,000 for Little Wings, a not-for-profit organisation that provide a free flight and ground transport service for children from rural and regional NSW to access specialised medical services and treatment in major centres.

— BY JONATHAN ROE — There was plenty of action out on Lake Canobolas over the weekend as Dragon boaters from all over the western region gathered in preparation for the for the Australian Masters Games in Adelaide next month. The Kombo Dragons is largely made up of members from Orange’s own Colour City Dragons and local paddlers will be out on the lake every Saturday and Sunday in preparation for the Adelaide Masters Games held from 5 – 12 October. Earlier this month the Colour City Dragons competed in the first Regatta of the 2019/2020 season at Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith. The team gave their all in six hard-fought races with little turnaround time between heats. They were two paddlers short for the races, but this didn’t dampen enthusiasm or commitment. Sad to say, a lot of the talk has been negative, and in many cases, I believe unwarranted or simply not true. “I bought two brush cutters one ride-on and I had a little thing about this big with my spare parts in it, and I went from there,” says Colin Miller, recalling the early days of Central West Mowers and Chainsaws 25 years ago.

It was 1994 and Col, after more than a decade working in the industry, decided it was time to strike out on his own. “I decided I’d had enough of working for somebody else and thought I could make a go of it on my own,” said Col, who originally started his business in the old Ford building in Peisley Street before moving a few months later to their familiar showroom and workshop in Endsleigh Avenue. Those early years took a lot of hard work and Col spent many long days and evenings in the workshop. “When I first started, I didn’t have money naturally, and I had three children and a wife and so as I sold one mower, I’d buy something else and just kept going until I got bigger and bigger.” But with a reputation for good service and workmanship, the business grew and expanded. People kept coming and I started employing people,” said Col. “But one of the

biggest things for us was when I got the Toro Mowers dealership, that was a big step for us… In the first year, I sold 63! I broke the record for the most Toros ever sold in the first year for a dealership.” The next big step for Col, was when he expanded out into wood heaters and gas log fires, changing the business name to the now recognisable Central West Mowers and Heating. It was a bit of a gamble as Col admits not knowing much about the heaters initially other than where the wood goes! But it was a move that has paid off as heating sales now make up as much as a third of their business. “We got into heating maybe 12 years ago,” said Col. “We needed something else for the wintertime and heaters slotted straight in. So, I just went and bought about eight wood heaters and put them on my floor. I didn’t know much then, but I learnt. Now heating is a big part of our business.”

Central West Mowers and Heating is truly a family business with Col’s wife Katariena working alongside him, as well as his son Ben, who has taken over the management side of things. In a competitive business like theirs, Central West Mower and Heaters pride themselves on selling only quality products and offering friendly, professional service. “I feel that has got us as far as we have,” said Col. “There is a lot more competition out there, so you’ve got to be on your game otherwise you won’t survive.” “We are not trying to be the cheapest, we operate on service,” said Ben. “We try and provide the best service we can and we keep our customer base that way… everything we sell is serviced and assembled and run-checked before it leaves the store, all our warranty and servicing is done here on site and that is the sort of thing that makes us different.”

Nick Capper – Comedian — BY JONATHAN ROE —

“The first show was good, the second show went great, the third show… I really, really bombed! It was terrible, like awful,” says comedian Nick Capper, recalling his early days in comedy. “There are still people who don’t talk to me and that was 12 years ago!” Nick, who finished a tour of regional NSW in Orange earlier this month alongside fellow Melbourne comedian Matt Stewart, sat down with Orange City Life to talk about what it takes to be a working comic in Australia today. Comedy was never originally part of the plan for Nick, who grew up on a cotton farm near Boomi, a town of 200 people north of Moree on the Queensland border. It’s a town at the end of the line, he says, real country — people don’t go through Boomi to get anywhere. “It was great place to grow up, although I didn’t always like it,” says Nick. “I was kind of a city boy at heart — I liked my art, my heavy metal music, all that sort of stuff — but then once I left, I found myself loving going back and I really saw how beautiful it was.” He attended Farrer Agricultural College; a

great school if you want to milk a cow and play rugby, he says, but in hindsight he also considers his time there as a kind of ‘comedy apprenticeship’. “It was a good experience and it made me who I am, it is what cemented me as a comic. You always had to be on your guard and my year was especially known for really ripping into each other… you were either the king of the bus really owning somebody, or someone made a good joke on you and you bombed. It taught me that resilience,” says Nick. Following school Nick went into cotton farming, working for his father, but quickly found the routine of farming wasn’t for him. “You know what you are going to be doing at the same time each year and also you have to work your guts out — you’ll never have a good Christmas as a cotton farmer. You never see a cotton farmer on Farmer Wants a

But again, even cotton farming was all part of his strange path into comedy. “When you work in shifts, you put all the utes together before you do a change and you tell jokes. I didn’t know it at the time, but I look back at it now and I was particularly good at it. They were all other people’s jokes that you read in Ralph Magazine or wherever, but I found I could always put a bit more flair on it. So, in a way they were my first standup shows.” Nick’s first chance to actually get on stage came while studying graphic design in Sydney. At the urging of one of his friends, he got up at an open mic for a bit of fun and a creative outlet. And for the first few years, comedy was mostly a hobby for Nick, a chance to get out, meet people and travel. When he really decided to pursue comedy for a career, it was almost more out of necessity than anything else. “I was going to quit. I’d done all the stuff I wanted; I’d travelled around Australia doing it, but then I was at a bit of a low point and all I had left was stand up,” he says. “I’d moved to Melbourne and was like, ‘that’s it, I’m going to find a career’, but then I broke up with my girlfriend, I was only working part time and I thought what else am I going to do at night? Plus, I had to try get money from somewhere.” Not that financial security and comedy go hand in hand. “It was hell, I had to take terrible gigs, I was hustling for $100 I was always stressed, and that stress took up part of my creativity, I was always stressed about money… If you had given me an out, at my most desperate times, I would have out,” says Nick, who can reel off a long list of odd jobs he’s had in his time. “I worked in a bank, I was a travel agent for a couple of years, just anything so I could

keep doing comedy… I was a dishy in Sydney and I became a travelling salesman for about three months selling children’s educational products door to door. I work on a children’s farm as well every now and then, taking kids around and showing them how to milk a goat all that kind of stuff. Even last year I was helping a friend who works cleaning up meth houses and checking stolen cars for needles… “When I took up freelance graphic design again and was really pushing comedy hard, it took me five or six years and it’s really only now I worry about money a lot less and I haven’t really had to hustle as much. “Once you get that word of mouth, you are reliable and people know you can do the job, then they call you in and that’s really good… but next week could be a different story!” Although Nick has been pursuing comedy for 12 years, he still can’t imagine where it might take him. “No, I don’t even know if I’ll be doing it next year. You never know when people are going to get sick of you and when people are going to stop coming to shows,” he says. “And anytime I’ve wanted to quit — it has been a bit of a curse — but anytime I’ve wanted to quit, someone who I’ve really respected in comedy has told me not to. If it was just your mates you wouldn’t care, but there have been people, successful people that still believe in me, so you kind of just have to keep going.” Nick Capper puts out a weekly podcast, the anxiety-inducing The Phone Hacks, where he along with co-host Mike Goldstein and brave guests, go through each other’s phones and then try to out-embarrass each other via awkward social media posts. He has just filmed his first comedy special and also makes regular appearances on The Little Dum Dum Club Podcast with Tommy Dassalo and Karl Chandler, and Dave O’Neil’s podcast The Debrief.

Vinyl is back Got some old records tucked away in the shed? Dig them out, because vinyl is back in a big way. Are you as old as me (or older)? Sorry if you are – but that means you know exactly what I’m writing when I sing the praises of listening to music on vinyl. Purists will tell you the sound when playing a record is deeper and that you can ‘feel’ the music as the needle rubs over the vibrations. Maybe. But there’s something about slipping a vinyl onto the turntable in 2019 that gets the blood pumping. In most cases it’ll be a blast from the past when The Stones (Sticky Fingers), Dark Side of the Moon, or perhaps even ABBA’s Arrival get a spin. What was the first record you ever owned? It’s a good conversation starter. My folks bought me the album called ‘Ripper’ in 1974. It was a compilation album which had ‘Horror Movie’ by Skyhooks and ‘Down Down’ by Status Quo on it. I still have it and drag out every once in a while. I bought ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ as a 45rpm on my 10th birthday – it cost $1.05, and I remember having to run back to the car to ask mum to lend me 5c because I only had a $1 note that I’d got for my birthday. Sheesh. The first real album I owned was ‘Breakfast In America’ by Supertramp, and to this day I’m very proud to say it was the first. It’s kind-of ratty and scratched and worn out now, but it’s still amazing to listen to. When the old 2GZ radio station went totally digital about a dozen years ago, they had a sale and got rid of all their records. No vision people … your loss was my gain. I picked up a pile of classic vinyls for a pittance. Everything from ‘Hot August Night’ to a 45 of ‘Duncan’ by Slim. A couple of times a year the touring vinyl sale comes to Orange and Bathurst. They sell everything from collectors’

items worth hundreds of dollars down to ‘Slade Alive’ for $2. I was recently helping out a young lad of 17 with his calculus and he had Bruce Springsteen playing in the background … on a record player. His parents had bought it for him as a gift, and he only had one record. I lent him a couple more, and I reckon he’s not only a convert, but on the road to obsession. The 18 year old under our roof knocked us over with a feather last month as he uttered the statement “I just bought a record online”. What?! Yep, a new English artist (world famous to the educated young crowd) named Jacob Collier had pressed his collection of brilliance onto vinyl. The disc arrived via the post from pommieland a little while later, and we’ve been listening to it ever since. Tick, another one converted. I took the portable record player I own into work last week and tried something different, as we played background tunes whilst the seniors are heavily into review for their upcoming exams. We played a mix of records, Dire Straits, Foo Fighters and Paul Kelly were the main ones. Some kids loved it, some tolerated it, and others didn’t jump on the vinyl train. Worth a crack, I say. It’ll cost you the best part of fifty bucks to buy a ‘new’ album on vinyl at the stores today. But it’s not hard to dig around and find something at the Opp shops or ‘Old Ware’ places. They’re all understanding the demand for them now, so I reckon you’d better be quick before the prices go silly. Go on, shelling out $3 for an old Skyhooks or a Sherbet record will be worth it for sure.

People with disability in Calare are invited to share their experiences with the National Disability Insurance Scheme. An accessible community workshop will be held in Orange on 22 October to discuss ways to improve participants’ experiences with the NDIS. Orange is just one of seven regional locations across the country to host a workshop. The review will lead to the development of an NDIS Participant Service Guarantee, which will set new standards for the time it takes for key steps in the NDIS process. This means there will be shorter, agreed timeframes for people to get their access decision, to have their NDIS plan approved

The Federal Government is serious about deterring those who want to disrupt and intimidate our farmers, fishers and foresters in their homes and on their properties.

How to get the BEST out of OUR COUNCILS with AMANDA SPALDING

Community Engagement and Accountability In last week’s column I said that I would write about community engagement and accountability. I should have said ‘touch on’ the subjects as they are large topics and I will come back to them and cover them at different times as they have a season to them. I started my working life in England where local government is the equivalent of local and State government together in Australia. In learning how this different environment works I was told that in NSW it is really up to the community to hold its local Council accountable. The importance of community engagement While participatory democracy is an important part of local government decision-making it is essential that councils have a clear, robust and structured community engagement process in place. This helps ensure that the best decisions are made for the whole community, including ‘the silent majority’. Councillors are the representatives of the community. Therefore, they are accountable to the community. It is important that the community is able to contact and meet with councillors to discuss and contribute their views and ideas. Councillors should therefore spend time undertaking formal and informal community engagement. This helps

ensure that a council’s policies and programs are acceptable to, and meet the needs of, the community. When a council is developing important policies, strategies and plans, such as a council’s community strategic plan, delivery program or operational plan, it is required by law to put the drafts on public exhibition and consider all the comments or submissions received. The Local Government Act 1993 also requires councils to adopt a community engagement strategy to guide its engagement with the local community when developing their plans, policies and programs. Accountability Councillors are accountable to the community through community engagement, open and transparent decisionmaking, as well as regular planning and reporting. Ultimately, councillors are accountable to the community every four years on election day. This is pertinent as the next Local Government elections are 12 months away on the second Saturday in September 2020. At all times, council decision making should be transparent. Fundamentally, community engagement processes are designed to promote a culture of accountability to the local community. Implicitly, the needs of the community should be reflected in the decisions of council. Councils must regularly

provide information to the public, which demonstrates: » the council is being administered in accordance with the Local Government Act 1993 » the council is allocating resources consistent with its vision and strategic plan as well as the corporate objectives stated in the community strategic plan » the performance of the council is monitored and reviewed to ensure council objectives are being pursued » the interests of all the community is served » each councillor is acting with integrity. Reporting I was a member of the Department of Local Government’s Working Party that developed the Integrated Planning and Reporting reforms in 2009 and I will explain Integrated Planning and Reporting in more detail in future columns. However, one of the main forms of accountability is the Council reporting to the community on what has been achieved towards the community’s needs and aspirations. This is done in a variety of ways, but I have to say that the implementation has generally been a disappointment throughout NSW. This is partly because of a lack of measures in the various plans against which the Council can be held accountable. The Delivery Program translates the community strategic plan goals into

actions. The General Manager is responsible for reporting at least six-monthly on the achievements in implementing the Delivery Program and the effectiveness of the principal activities undertaken in achieving the objectives in the Community Strategic Plan at which those activities are directed. The deadline for the report on the 12 month progress of councils’ Delivery Programs is the end of August. This will then also be included in their Annual Reports that will be available at the end of November. I have looked for these 6 Monthly Delivery Program progress reports on the websites of our three Councils – Orange City Council; Cabonne Council and Blayney Shire Council. The only one I can find is in the attachments to the Business Papers of Blayney Shire Council for the August meeting. Best practice would have all of the plans and reports available on the same webpage so the community can compare plans and results. I generally find Orange City Council’s website very difficult to navigate so have sent an email to request a copy of the report and look forward to the opportunity of analysing it. As Orange City Council has just announced the appointment of its new CEO, I will cover roles and responsibilities in next week’s column.

EMMCO WINS CUP These guys from the Emmco Rugby League team may have been covered in mud and battle weary but they won the day. They snatched the Western Challenge Cup from Lithgow Workmen’s Club, winning decisively 28-11 in a thrilling match at Wade Park in July 1960. SIGHTS SET ON PORTUGAL BY MELISE COLEMAN Memoe Jarallah and Lachlan Blackburn of Pollets Martial Arts Centre in Orange recently travelled to Tempe Sydney, where they fought in the Australian Pankration Championships. The day brought with it great success as both boys fought in a Pix Lax (full contact kick boxing) and they both won the Australian Title. Along with the title, both Memoe and Lachlan were also scouted and selected for the MMA World Titles in Portugal, set to take place in November. Kyoshi Benjamin Pollet said, “We took two guys away and came back with two Australian Titles, that’s pretty spot

on, I can’t ask for more than that. I was very proud of the guys, they did well, its another step of climbing that ladder and becoming professionals.” It’s a constant progress of learning and the hard work isn’t over yet, Lachlan will be fighting again in a month and Memoe will be taking steps to recovery after he broke a bone in his foot from the tournament, he will be expected to recover and jump straight back into it, gaining every ounce of preparation he can. Kyoshi Pollet continued, “We don’t throw them into anything they can’t handle, as they get better, they

keep climbing. “I like to take them to the bigger circuits so they get scouted and they are given opportunities to fight in bigger organisations like the UFC. The level of talent, these guys will be up against a large level of talent, and with that, it gives them greater opportunities to get pro fights.” “We will see what they will do with the opportunity.” Memoe and Lachlan are fully sponsored for their trip to Portugal, which means transport and fighting gear alike is all covered, all they have to bring is their’ A’ game.

In the 1980’s, ruins of a building in Newman Park remained. It was a timber structure which was demolished in that decade. The bluestone foundation that remains shows it was originally quite a substantial structure. Does anyone have a phot of this building as it was, or know when it was built? Christian Community –What a blessing! I suffer from a medical condition called Hyperemesis Gravidarum, severe morning sickness. My last pregnancy was full of hospital visits to get rehydrated on a drip after extreme vomiting meant I couldn’t keep anything down for days on end. I spent the whole nine months trying to do everything to stay in bed and sleep. Sleeping was the only time I got relief from the nausea. However, life got in the way of my sleeping plan and I had to get up to be a mum, wife and so on. Simple tasks like cooking or cleaning seemed like a mountain of suffering and a simple

smell would send me running for the bathroom or a bucket. I had only been living in Orange for about 5 months at this time and a member of our church for about 3 months but once my illness was known amongst my church community, a meal roster was put together to provide for my family. A few acquaintances but mostly strangers fed my family for many months because I wasn’t able to complete this simple task. Why would they do this? We weren’t friends. They didn’t know us…they did it because of Jesus!

Design is about communication, making it easy to negotiate the content, not to just squeeze in as much as possible. EDITOR: This is one of those balancing act things. Bit like when you have too many grass shavings for your green bin. What to do? Squash it in, hold it for next time, only cut the amount of grass the bin will hold (if you can judge that) and so on. If we did everything in large print, we couldn’t afford it for one, and two, we’d have to reduce the overall content by 25% or more. Like I said it’s a balancing act.
