It’s hard to put the last two weekends together, bleak and snowy one week, glorious sunshine the next. I know which one I preferred. My wife and I took a drive down to Bathurst on Saturday to have a pizza at a place down there called the Church Bar. We poked around the shops while there but the pizza at the Church Bar was the main game in town for us. They didn’t let us down, their pizzas are absolutely wonderful, and I can thoroughly recommend the experience for anyone looking an occasional variation to what Orange offers.

It’s another variety filled OC Life for you again this week and I hope you thoroughly enjoy it. Each week we try to feature local people who are doing inspiring things and there are several just like that in this issue. Please read their stories, be inspired then think about what you can do to make our city a better place, even little things like sending us a simple Thumbs up for someone, or picking up that piece of litter on the street and putting it in a bin may a difference. Think about what you can do. For those interested, on September 5, we will have been publishing Orange City Life for 12 years. It wasn’t always known as Orange City Life, we started off as Orange Photo News, then changed our name to Central West Photo News and then later again to Orange City Life. Name aside, it’s always had much the same basic objectives, to provide a great read for people each week and to bring out the best in people. You can be the judge on how well we’ve done that.

REMEMBERING

“ The

ast week, on August 15, a small service was held at the Cenotaph at Robertson Park commemorating Victory in the Pacific Day. The date commemorates Japan’s acceptance of unconditional surrender, and for Australians, it meant the Second World War was finally over. This year is the 74th anniversary of when troops came back home. Orange RSL Sub-Branch Senior Vice President, Chris Colvin explained, “It’s one of those things that people tend to forget, we remember ‘Remembrance Day’ because it’s the big one. Today is important for our Veterans, and for the history of Australia, it is also very important.” Veterans, members of the public and local dignitaries were in attendance as well as students from Orange Anglican Grammar School, who led the service with music and poetry pieces. “Anglican Grammar school have been helping us throughout the year and they have done a wonderful job regarding the service, we have a good relationship with most of the schools and they are always happy to help us out.” Mr Colvin continued, “You can’t change the fact the War happened, but it’s great to commemorate the end of it.”

KAMARA “I was born in Egypt and grew up in Cairo. My parents migrated here in 2001, I knew no English at all so straight into Year 9 at school was quite challenging! “We lived in Alice Springs for five years and it was through school I really started getting into dance. I’ve loved dancing since I was two years old, but I didn’t take it seriously until I came to Australia. I did hip hop, contemporary and jazz at school and then when I finished school, I took on other dance styles.

I moved to Adelaide for University to study law and then moved to Sydney for around eight years. I’d started teaching dancing in high school and I have not stopped, so it has been my full-time job since. “When I moved to Sydney, I started with a Brazilian company called Rhythm Brazil and we would do shows all around Sydney. I also danced with the Rio Project and every single year we would travel to Rio, Brazil and parade in Carnivale. I still dance with them every now and then.

“I came to Orange a couple of years ago as Sydney started to get too busy and chaotic and I realised with the traffic and that, that I was spending so much time travelling from one place to another. I discovered Orange and I liked it a lot! I now teach a Zumba class here each Tuesday. I enjoy everything about dancing! If a day goes past without me dancing, you would notice it. People ask what’s wrong and then I play music and I realise I didn’t dance today! For me it is freedom. Dancing makes me alive — I love it!

I grew up believing that as far as possible, I’d have to pay my own way through life. My, haven’t things changed? Today, or so it seems, that thinking has been replaced with something else, something like – let’s not do anything unless we can get someone else to pay for it. If it had a name, it could probably be called The Age of Grants. Obviously, there are exceptions, but it seems to me that a great number of people, organisations, and particularly local Councils, now seem very reluctant to do anything unless they can get a grant or funding of some sort. What ever happened to, first and foremost, expecting to pay our own way, but if we could get a grant or some funding, that’d simply be a bonus? Unless I miss my guess, there wouldn’t be too many projects that our local Council has on its agenda, that are not dependent on getting a grant of some sort. I don’t have a problem with that so much, but I would have a problem if good, necessary or vital local projects didn’t get off the ground simply because grant funding couldn’t be secured. I also wonder if the way grant funding is allocated or distributed is not working against better outcomes for local or deserving communities. Again I don’t know for sure, but the impression I get is that our Federal or State Governments allocate funding for a variety of different reasons or purposes, and then Council’s like ours can apply for that funding to do a project within the bounds of that reason or purpose. For example, the $4 million or so our Council secured to

do a huge upgrade to the museum or regional gallery was probably money allocated to be used in the arts or history area. What I’m saying is that if $4 million is available, what if as a community, we would prefer to spend that money on something we considered more important or beneficial. Also, it appears that whichever party is in Government, this can play a part in which communities or electorates get grant funding and how much. If that’s true, I find that questionable. Grants, whichever Government offers them, are presumably just tax money being distributed amongst the people. My belief is that whatever the total of the pool money available, it should be distributed amongst all communities in an equitable manner, probably using a formula of some sort based on the local population for example. Who’s in power shouldn’t affect that. How such money is then used within a local community should be decided by the Community and probably on a local priority basis. To make my point further, let’s imagine if Orange had opportunity to secure $20 million of government funding in the next 12 months. Don’t you think it would be good if, as a community, we could then decide which projects we wanted or needed to spend it on? That against having to spend it on projects that the Government of the day dictated. Call me old-fashioned but I believe grants have their place, but they shouldn’t just be an easy excuse for not doing what is the noble and responsible thing to do in the first place.

um Fest Central West is proud to present the very first offline festival event held at the Greenhouse. Designed for a night of fun, pampering and friendships, it will also feature a talk from film Director, Author and instigator of the Global Body Image movement, Taryn Brumfitt. The idea came from Amorette Zielinski, who moved to Orange six years ago and due to feeling isolated as a new Mum, and who was also heavily pregnant, started the ‘Central West Mums -NSW’ Facebook page. A page designed for support and connection for Mums in our region. “I ploughed through a difficult time and thought to myself I need to start a group like this because there must be all of these other women feeling the same. When I started the group, it took off pretty quickly, I think people just genuinely wanted to have a group like that bringing lots of content, ideas and what’s on. I drove most of the content in the beginning but now everyone puts so much stuff up, now that the community has grown, which is fantastic.” After applying for a grant through Facebook, Amorette thought this was her opportunity to organise an event for the group. “This community event has brought so much excitement to the group, I’ve tried to make it about mental health and wellbeing, and also about fun and networking and support, because there are a lot of ladies out there who still don’t know people, the same

position I was in six years ago. Now they have that network instantly there on ‘Central West Mums - NSW’, we are trying to bridge that gap between the online group and the offline community.” “As a result of organising the event, a lot more people have now found out about the online community group, and that’s been great, it has strengthened it even more, which is what it is all about. I want Mums to feel like they have each other’s back and can keep supporting one another. I think it’s important when you are geographically isolated as well, some may be living out of town and don’t come into town often and others may live in town but may be dealing with social anxiety, so they like to have that online connection with the group. This is bringing a lot of people out and making them feel completely secured and loved.” The Centre for Rural and Remote Mental Health will be a part of the event as well as Di Gill. Amorette hopes that this event becomes the staple for an annual event, one that only gets bigger and better. "I hope this is an upbeat and uplifting night that’s fun, safe and a trusted environment for all who come along.”

How I get my kicks

Regular Orange City life readers will be familiar with the work of our on-call photographer, EdithMay Gowing, from our social pages, but you may not know that landscape photography is where her real passion lies. Growing up on a farm near Trundle, photography, art and nature were a big part of Edith’s childhood. Her early memories are filled with excursions to national parks, where her dad would wander off with his camera while her mother would find a quite spot to sit and sketch. Edith bought her first camera when she was just ten years old and she hasn’t been without one since. “It was just a toy. It was a plastic toy camera that used real film, took black and white photos but for a toy it took really

good photos,” said Edith, who believe it or not, still has prints of those very first photos. “That’s probably where it really started,” said Edith. “My Dad is still a keen photographer.” It was also her father who gave Edith her first SLR, just prior to a school trip to New Zealand. “That was a big, big thing for me. I remember pulling it out on the flight over to find out how it worked.” For many years, photography remained just a hobby for Edith, who trained as a teacher, but as work took her from NSW to South Australia to Papua New Guinea, the camera was always on hand. About nine years ago, Edith found herself looking for new opportunities and so it was then she decided to follow her true passion. “I thought, I’ve always wanted to do photography, I’ve always wanted to do landscapes; let’s see what we can do,” said Edith, whose work is now a regular sight at markets in and around Orange. “Primarily, I do landscapes and I sell them at markets as prints, keyrings, magnets, coasters…

that’s the sort of stuff I’m selling around. And of course, I do a calendar every year.” Edith’s work almost exclusively features her muchloved Central Western landscapes. “For me, my love of photography is teamed with my love of bush walking, nature and travel,” said Edith, who believes that a camera can help you connect to the land around you. “It slows you down,” she said. “because it makes you stop and makes you look.” Edith is just about to release her 2020 Calendar of local landscapes and even has a book in the works. “A book is something I’ve wanted to do for a while. A book of local landscapes, particularly the hidden gems around the back roads and stuff like that,” said Edith. NEW ORANGE HOME

- The start of big things for Rail group

This weekend local railway enthusiasts have two opportunities to get out on the tracks in heritage rolling stock with the Lachlan Valley Railway (LVR) running daytrips to Bathurst and Dubbo. And you can expect plenty more opportunities to come, with Lachlan Valley Railway well on their way to establishing their new home here in Orange. “Orange is going to become our hub, our new mainline depot,” said LVR Director and manager of Rail Safety, Ross Jackson. “And you will see a lot of more of our services and events based out of Orange in the future. They are building a new railway museum in Bathurst at the moment and the guys at the Zig Zag Railway at Lithgow are getting back on their feet, so this whole corridor is going to become a

rail heritage destination.” The LVR has been in limbo for the last ten years, when the railway line was closed to their longheld home base in Cowra. But over the last few years, the organisation has been working to set up a new depot for their rolling stock at East Fork. “We are actually starting re-sleepering in there now. The paperwork side of it is pretty well done and once we get some sleepers under the ground and a bit of work on the turntable… once we have that done, I see us in there before the end of the year,” said Ross. Attention Retirees… Would You Like A Pay Rise?

veryone who watches the news would be aware of the struggles that retirees face in Australia. It’s not all cruise ships and never-ending holidays. It’s tough… retirement is daunting. Work for 40 plus years to one day stop working, but then have to manage your retirement savings to make sure they are going to last for maybe 30 plus years of retirement. That’s a big concept to get your head around. It’s made all the more difficult by the thousands of different options available when it comes to what to do with your retirement savings. I met with a woman last week who has just under $400,000 in a retirement pension. On that money, she was paying an investment fee of 1.00% plus a 0.26% admin fee. You might be reading that and thinking, “That

doesn’t sound too bad”. But when you convert that into a dollar figure, it works out to be $5,040 per year in expenses. All of a sudden, 1.26% looks very different! The money was all invested in one investment option, which meant it was not set up to deal with the short, medium and long-term timeframes that a retiree must be planning for. We were quickly able to look at an alternative option which killed two birds with one stone… We can move the money to a retirement income product that charges a fraction of the price and at the same time, set up the investments within the pension to ensure it can achieve long term growth while dealing with the potential of things going down in the short term. This is what a sensible, logical, wellthought-out plan for retirement savings looks like. All up, the move will see fees drop from $5,040 to $809… a saving of $4,231.

Now a saving in fees means the money doesn’t get paid to someone else, it is kept by the owner… it’s a $4,231 pay rise! $4,231 sounds to me like a pretty nice holiday! What does it sound like to you? I bet you could pretty quickly write a list of 100 things that you would rather spend $4,231 on than paying it to a super fund. The decisions you make with your retirement savings really are crucial. While it’s vitally important to try and put enough away for retirement, the numbers of what happens with that money are fascinating. Studies show that retirees save 10% of their retirement savings while working, 30% comes from the investment earnings on those savings during their working lives, BUT 60% comes from the investment earnings they generate DURING retirement. Judy Lynch believes that winters are as cold as ever: “Yes I do; it’s bloody freezing,”

American writer Mark Twain’s famous quip “Everyone talks about the weather but no one does anything about it,” was well-proven over the past week with Orange residents having plenty to say on the issue… ith the mercury hovering well into single figures and an August minimum of 2.1 on Saturday, August 10; Orange City Life put the question to freezing locals, is Orange as

cold as it used to be? With climate-change convention saying that our winters are becoming less-severe and our summers hotter; many locals dodging sleet in the “Apple City” agreed. Visiting from Forbes and clinging to a coffee for warmth, Deborah Hailley couldn’t believe the sleet falling around Summer Street: “It’s so cold, I can’t believe it. On Saturday I went to a Show and it was 22 degrees centigrade.“ Waiting for a bus home in the sleet; Judy Lynch believes that winter’s just as cold as ever in beautiful Orange. “Yes I do; it’s bloody freezing,” she said with emphasis. Margaret Chapman moved to Orange when she was 17 to train

as a nurse and remembers winters being far more intense. “We used to have snow that would hang around for days…Our winters were much colder,” she believes. “I remember cars would skid off Summer Street into the kerbs because of the ice covering the road,” she said. And what do the experts say? Charles Sturt University’s Associate Professor Andrew Hall says that, taking 1976 as a base year, records at Orange Agricultural Research Station show temperatures have increased on average by about one degree centigrade over the past 43 years. “The minimum temperatures have increased only slightly, but maximums have increased fairly significantly, nearly two degrees” he said. And what of the spring ahead? According to the Bureau of Meteorology’s September to November forecast maps, it’s not good news for hard-hit farmers battling drought. The Central Tablelands has only about a 35 per cent chance of above-average rain, with about a 70 per cent chance of aboveaverage temperatures. Still, as the recent cold spell has shown, we’ll still have plenty of variable weather to talk about in the future, even if there’s not a lot we can do about it!

$5.6 MILLION IN FUNDING AWARDED TO EXPAND THE NDIS PROVIDER MARKET A total of $5.6 million to help businesses transition to NDIS through the Transition Assistance Funding initiative has been announced this week. Through this initiative, 280 organisations will receive grants of up to $20,000 each to access advice and professional services to develop their capabilities to effectively operate in the NDIS market. In Orange, two businesses have received $20,000 each under the scheme PHYZ X Pty Ltd and the Orange Aboriginal Corporation Health Service.

Providers can use the funding for tailored business advice, software upgrades and other one-on-one support that will help them transition to the consumer driven model of the NDIS. An additional 90,000 full-time equivalent employees are required to meet the demand for NDIS services by 2023, which is why there is such a large investment in programs that support providers to transition and develop their workforces.

WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST CITIZENS

Last Wednesday, I was fortunate to welcome 19 new citizens to our great country, at a citizenship ceremony at the Orange Civic Centre. There were so many wonderful stories and I was delighted to meet so many people committing to become citizens to our great country.

On Sunday we marked Vietnam Veterans Day. It was a time to thank the tens of thousands of Australian men and women for their service during that conflict. The release of the Australian movie Danger Close, about the battle of Long Tan, has helped spark renewed interest in Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War. As I have travelled around the region I have also noticed something else – veterans are now much more willing to talk about their experiences. Some of the stories are humorous, others speak to the horrors of war. The treatment of our veterans upon their return from Vietnam was a shameful episode in Australia’s history. It also overshadowed the fact that Australia’s men and women served with distinction in Vietnam. Once they were detached from American control and given their own province to oversee (Phuoc Tuy) they were able to use the jungle warfare tactics that had served them well in World War II and later during the Malayan Emergency and operations in Borneo. It wasn’t about big set-piece battles but rather patrols and ambush. The reality is that the Australians dominated their enemy in Phuoc Tuy province and suffered far fewer casualties than their allies. Long Tan is the most famous battle but there were numerous others, such as Coral and Balmoral and Binh Bah. My point is that the Australian story in Vietnam is not one of defeat. The Australians served with all the skill, courage and professionalism of the ANZACS who fought for Australia before them. And they were very successful. Some who served were volunteers. Others were conscripts. All served because their country asked them to. 521 made the ultimate sacrifice. They all deserve our unreserved thanks, respect and gratitude.

Lest we forget.

SCHOOL OPENS ITS DOORS to Community Services — BY MELISE COLEMAN —

Glenroi Public School are three weeks into a new school initiative which began from Orange local, Donna Monaghan.

The front section of Glenroi School, each Thursday will offer a space for parents and students to engage with services available within our community. The master-mind behind the idea, Schools learning support officer and Community Engagement officer for Glenroi Public School, Donna Monaghan explained, “Working at the Council I saw that there was a huge barrier with community accessing services, when I got the position here at school I thought that would be a great opportunity to use our school as a bit of a hub for services to come out and bring

their information to connect with our school community.” Donna mentioned that she was blown away by services rallying behind her idea, so much so, most weeks they will be doubling up with services. “They have really come on board and really want to come out and interact with our school community, I think it will become a really popular thing and for parents to know this will happen every Thursday, it will give them an opportunity to come and talk one on one, not in such a formal environment, with family or friends around them. These could be services they may not even know

about and get that information that they need, that can really benefit them.” Some of the services include; Life without Barriers, TAFE, The Smith Family, VERTO and Orange Health Service. WHAT HAPPENS AT A MEDIATION? A mediation is an excellent way to fast track a settlement in your parenting or property matter. Mediations follow a similar framework regardless of whether they are parenting or property matters or both. In mediations with the assistance of legal advice, a mediator is appointed and a date is agreed upon. Both solicitors will prepare an outline of their argument in advance and exchange them prior to the mediation starting. The mediator will then set the ground rules for the mediation and may invite both parties and their solicitors to discuss each parties’ case. In circumstances of violence through out the relationship this is not appropriate and the parties may not see each other at all during the mediation as the mediator moves between the two rooms providing suggestions and passing various offers between the parties. This has some benefit even where violence has not been an issue as each party can consider the information provided by the other party in privacy. One party will then make an opening offer of settlement and negations will begin. Hopefully the gap between the two offers will decrease and it will reach a point where everyone will agree. The theory of “a good mediation is one where everyone walks away unhappy” remains useful. Get Warblers for the World

We’ll never get rid of the guns, so there needs to be another solution Science fiction – big fan. 80s stuff, ditto. So when it comes to talking about things from movies and books that could possibly become reality in our world, I’m all in. Top of my favourite ‘fiction’ items from movies and books would certainly be a Light Sabre from Star Wars. I was eleven when that concept was first floated, and I was hooked on the idea of owning. I didn’t plan on spearing it through the heart of my enemy as happens in that galaxy Far, Far Away, I just wanted to run around waving it and having sword fights. Of course I wouldn’t need to make the phhhhmmmmm noise with my mouth if I owned one… The 1967 Batman movie saw the Caped Crusader pull an aerosol can out of his utility belt that contained shark repellent. He sprayed it on the shark that grabbed on to his leg, and the rest is history – after that the Joker, Riddler and Penguin didn’t stand a chance. In the 80s when the ‘Back To The Future’ movies came out I desperately wanted a hoverboard. Neither a weapon nor an item to change the world, it’s something that all gadget lovers saw potential in. If only. Back to Star Wars, Luke owned a Landspeeder, which was his version of a hoverboard. Obi Wan, that IS the kind of gadget I’m looking for. Then the Harry Potter books introduced us to the Floo Network. You could jump into the fireplace and be transported anywhere else in the world that also had a fire. Free instantaneous transport, that’d take the sting out of the Uber industry, huh? More recently and the reason for the waffle in this column, the greatest Australian fiction author of the 21st century (in my opinion), Matthew Reilly, came up with an idea that would seriously put a dent in much of the terrorist trauma our

broken world is trying to deal with at the moment. If you aren’t a regular reader of the magnificent Reilly tomes, his leading characters are Indiana Jones-like, but with a steroid/turbo boost going on. One of his main characters, Jack West Junior had an Einstein-like offsider who invented all kinds of crazy stuff in the style of Light Sabres and Hoverboards. His best ever invention was The Warbler. This guy, named Max, had invented an anti-gunfire device. He called it The Warbler. In a nutshell, it emits a magnetic field that deflects metallic flying objects that are travelling at supersonic speed – like bullets. So what, you say? Well, just think about it for a minute. In the books, the characters are able to activate the tennis ball sized warbler that’s in their backpack (or on their utility belt) and any bullets coming their way will veer off course, narrowly missing the intended target. Aha – now you’re thinking, aren’t you? If we could make larger versions of these Warblers and have their magnetic fields operating in and around our big cities, schools and major attractions (like Disneyland, the Opera House, etc), many of the terrorist acts that happen across the world couldn’t or wouldn’t occur. Sure, there’d still be knives and bombs, but maybe we could come up with some kindof ‘warbler’ object to combat those too. That would circumvent Mr Trump’s (and others) obsessions with the right to bear arms, taking guns and shooters right out of the equation. Of course, Max, the inventor of the Warbler, <spoiler alert> died from a wound by a crossbow. But he left our world with an idea that deserves a bit of beer-talk. Surely, there’s merit in the Warbler and everything it stands for … stopping the guns and the people who fire them.

It may have felt like Spring here in Orange, but winter still gripped Mount Canobolas over last weekend! You only had to travel a kilometre from the outskirts of town along the Pinnacle Road on Saturday to see snow stubbornly clinging to the shady southern sides of hedges, buildings and hills. A good cover of snow, inches thick, blanketed the road climbing to the summit of Mount Canobolas, which was still closed more than a week after the district’s heavy snowfall. Parked cars crowded the base of the mountain and the Mountain Tea House appeared to be doing a roaring trade with eager snow-spotters before they trudged up the icy mountain road. visitors were ill-equipped for the snow; Orange City Life spotted an alarming number of people making the ascent in shorts and thongs! “Yeah, bad decision!” one couple were heard to say after a comment was made about their minimal footwear. Others, who’d put a bit more planning into their visit, were making the most of the snow and sunshine with sleds, toboggans and boogie boards. Gary is one of the 9 or 10 local Real Estate agents who advertise in our Orange Property Market Real Estate Guide and last week I put my head in his door to say G’day. That G’day turned into a lengthy and somewhat nostalgic discussion about his industry and how it’s changed over the years, some of what he had to say I thought was worth sharing with our readers, so I started taking notes. Gary shared that he is a 3rd Generation agent, his destiny probably started when he was a mere 6 years old and used to go with his Dad to the saleyards. Has father Lance Blowes, started trading as Blowes McCarron in 1950. At one time the business was a real family affair with Gary, his Mum and Dad and two sisters all working in the firm. Since then the business underwent several name and location changes, all for various reasons, right up until today where it’s known simply as Blowes Real Estate and is located on the corner of Lords Place and Kite Street. Gary has seen many changes during his 45 years in the game and during that time he’s done it all. He still does, but there was a time when he wanted to be king of the mountain, when he had an ambition to be the biggest agent in Orange and with 27 staff and under the banner The Professionals - Bernard & Co, he was. Today he still works hard but chooses a more relaxed lifestyle. I asked him to elaborate a bit more on how it was then and now. “Back then being a real estate agent was regarded as a noble profession, similar to how people viewed their local bank managers at that time, they were seen as gentlemen, wore suits and they worked together for the benefit of the seller, not against each other. Agents back then respected the seller of the property more than they do today, after all you were working and being paid by them, not the buyer.” Gary said. “Today the industry is driven by the mighty

dollar, back then there were just 6 agents, today in Orange there are 25 and not just here in Orange but across the industry generally, many are thought to be in it just for the money. Back then I grew up being taught ‘worry about the sale and looking after the seller, not the commission’. “The type of values that were instilled into agents back then and the level of mentoring provided doesn’t happen to the same extent today, the ethics and methods displayed by many of today’s modern agents are very different to those back then. Those were the days when a man’s word was his bond. “Back then there was a lot of referral type business, it was not unusual for a seller to routinely recommend their agent to another seller and often one agent, over time, would sell a number of properties for the same family members. There was a lot of loyalty shown to agents back then,” he went on. I asked Gary what other changes came to mind? He rattled off quite a few including that back then it was common for a number of agents to offer the same house, you didn’t have exclusive agents back then. Agents were much more involved with their customers and the level of contact and service was much greater and more personal than it is in many cases today. Getting valuations was much simpler and there was none of the letterbox dropping or door knocking for prospects that goes on today. There wasn’t even Open Houses back then. Other noticeable changes have been the amount of paperwork required today and that where, to sell real estate previously in a Licensed agency, you only needed a Certificate of Registration, today a real estate salesperson must be individually licensed. To finish our time together, I asked Gary a bit of trivia. I said tell me about house prices back then and now. He said, “As an example, one 3br home I sold when I started in 1974 sold for $9,800

- that property today would sell for more like $400,000”. He also said that in all his time, a home in Orange that is looked after, on average, will go up in value 6% a year and double its value every 10 years. I enjoyed my chat with Gary, he obviously has a wealth of experience and knowledge, but if I was asked what was the number one impression I came away with about him, I’d have to say his passion for wanting to uphold and maintain his integrity and honourable reputation, while ever he chooses to remain in the real estate industry.

Lawn tips from a lawn fanatic

Ben’s lawn is a sight to behold; a green, unblemished carpet of perennial rye grass lovingly cut to the millimetre — looking top notch even now in winter! Ben works as a greenkeeper at the Orange Ex-Services Country Club Golf Course, but his passion for lawn care has seen him start his own side business, providing customised plans and advice for people wanting the best out of their lawn. “I don’t know why I love it; I just like making grass look good, shmick!” said Ben. Although this wasn’t always the case. “No, I didn’t like it at all! I used to mow my lawn with a whipper snipper before I worked out at the golf course, I used to hate mowing lawns, but now… I don’t know, I really enjoy it.” And you would want to enjoy it, given that Ben runs the mower over his own grass three times a week, but the results speak for themselves. “I wouldn’t go mow someone else’s lawn, I’m not keen on that, but my own grass… I take a bit of pride in it. I don’t do it to show it off, I just enjoy getting out here and spending time on it,” he said. Two years ago, Ben started putting up a few lawn care videos on his YouTube channel Lawn Tips. The channel has rapidly grown in popularity to nearly 35,000 subscribers all over the world. “My wife was sick of me talking about grass to her, so I figured I needed to talk to someone else about it and from there, it sort of just grew!” said Ben. “Honestly, I hoped I’d get a free bag of fertiliser maybe and that’s about it, but it just went crazy for me. And it has stretched across the world now

You may think you like grass, but you’re not Ben Sims! which is just nuts! “I sell products and I do consultation plans, lawn plans video calls across the world — the UK, the USA, I’ve got a few guys in South Africa.” Given Ben’s expertise when it comes to lawn care, we thought we’d pick his brains for some advice on how we can all get our lawns looking their best.

Tip number 1: Water properly (taking into consideration water restrictions) “Don’t overwater,” said Ben. “People think you have to water every single day of the week, but it is not the case. You can get away with once a week, twice a week, maybe, in Summer, just by giving a deep water. But here, I haven’t watered since the

Level 4 water restrictions came in in April.” Tip number 2: Regular mowing “You need to be mowing at least once a week. I’m mowing three times a week here, but at least once a week. As soon as you start cutting once a month you just stress your lawn out. If all you do is just start cutting once a week, you will find your lawn will improve dramatically within three or four months.” Tip number 3: Get on a good fertiliser program “Fertilise every eight to ten weeks. Now, I could go crazy in depth on fertilisers, but you want to look at something that is slow release. A lot of people love urea, which greens your lawn up pretty quick and gives a quick shot of growth, but it is not healthy for your lawn. You want to look at something that is going to feed it for eight to ten weeks instead of two weeks.” Tip number 4: Keep on top of weeds and be safe “Make sure you always read labels, because different grass types can’t handle certain herbicides — like Buffalo for example, you get the wrong herbicide and you can completely decimate your lawn. I’ve seen people do that so many times,” said Ben. “And if you are going to spray weeds, get some advice and use protection. “We met at one of Porter’s Popular Parties,” said John Read, recalling how he first encountered his wife Roberta more that 50 years ago. John was a young research agronomist on his first appointment to Leeton with the Department of Agriculture, while Roberta was a primary teacher on her very first posting. “In those days the Ag Agronomists were all about the same age and schoolteachers were all about the same age so in the same social network,” said John. “Ken Porter was a teacher and he used to have parties from time to time at different locations and they became known as Porter’s Popular Parties.” “I think I’d only been at Leeton a couple of weeks. So, we met very early on,” said Roberta. And it wasn’t long after that the young couple travelled to Sydney to seek permission from Roberta’s parents to get married.

“We asked them if we could get married and they were quite horrified that I wanted to get married so soon!” laughed Roberta. “They made me wait until my 21st birthday!” But this Friday, John and Roberta will celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary, something that seems to be an increasingly rare milestone these days. “I think right from the start we had shared values and a common faith so that was the basis for a good marriage,” said Roberta. “Make sure you do the best for your partner,” added John. “That’s one of the keys to having a strong bond, make sure you think of your partner always as being in need more than you.” John and Roberta have three children and three grandchildren, and they have been happily retired in Orange for the past 15 years. They are celebrating their Golden Anniversary this week (August 23rd) with a cruise around Japan.

SAN QUENTIN Daniel Thompson is once again reprising his role as the Man in Black to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Johnny Cash’s iconic live album At San Quentin. In 1969, off the back of the huge success of 1968’s At Folsom Prison album, Johnny Cash recorded the second of his legendary prison albums at California’s notorious maximumsecurity prison, San Quentin. In a brand-new show featuring more than 35 hits, Daniel Thompson’s Johnny Cash Live — one of Australia’s premier tribute acts — is taking audiences around Australia back to San Quentin. “At San Quentin was one of the most important and most significant albums of Johnny Cash’s career,” said Daniel, who has now toured his Johnny Cash Live show for the past seven years. “It was really the album that made him a superstar all over the world. A Boy Named Sue came out and took him to the top of the charts and then this album cemented him as a superstar, where he remains today.” In Back to San Quentin – 50 Years On, Daniel and powerhouse backing band, The Tennessee Express, will bring you the great moments of the legendary San Quentin album followed by hits and favourites spanning Cash’s entire 50-year recording career.

“It is pretty incredible that 50 years on and his stardom hasn’t really waned since that point… and when you go back and listen to this and the Folsom Prison album there is a real energy to them and I think that is what got people’s attention,” said Daniel, who believes Cash’s song contain a truth that resonates with people. “He was a pretty amazing artist in that he was able to write songs that spoke to people on a lot of different levels. On the surface these songs are about drinking, going to gaol and murder and all that sort of stuff, but really these songs are about the consequences of those things there is a lot of truth in the music and morals of the music and I think that is what people really relate to in Johnny Cash’s songs. “I love singing these songs, you have to really put a lot into it and I just never get sick of performing them. On Friday August 16th three of Kevvie’s granddaughters had their heads shaved at the Gladstone Hotel. Kevvie passed away from cancer 12 months ago and the granddaughters decided to have their heads shaved on the anniversary of his passing. The girls donated their hair for Wiggs and raised well over 10K for the Leukemia Foundation. The Hotel was packed for the occasion by the girl’s supporters. There was comparative biding for the right to cut the various plats.

Full OF Heart AND Talent ginning; Coming Together Is A Be ; Working ss re og Pr Is er h et og T ng pi Kee Henry Ford Together Is Success. – — BY MELISE COLEMAN — Cudal Pony Club (CPC) have had a busy time of late, not only have they taken out the top spot for NSW Pony Club of the year, but CPC’s very own little champion, 13-year-old Dixie Eyb, was the only Zone three rider selected for the Pony Club Nationals Formal Gymkhana and named reserve for the Tetrathlon team in the Under 18s division, making her the youngest member of these two squads! “Dixie has achieved so much, yet she is so young!” said Cudal Pony Club President, Jarrad Haynes. “She often has competitors much older than her and win or lose, she walks away with the biggest smile on her face.” Dixie’s success is even more remarkable given she is recovering from knee surgery early in the year. “She got back on and has more than impressed everyone. There is a very bright future for her and her four-legged partner,” said Jarrad, who is still reeling from the news they have taken out Pony Club of the Year.

“We were a bit blown away to tell you the truth. We didn’t expect to win. There is a lot of fantastic Pony Clubs in NSW — 270 to be exact! It was pretty fitting that we found out the same day we had a committee meeting, so we got to make some extra plans to celebrate with everyone at our next rally day.” For a village of just 550 people, the Cudal Pony Club is certainly punching above its weight, but Jarrad puts it down to being a genuine community club where everyone plays a part. “So much work goes on behind the scenes to arrange the events, then come the day everyone pitches in to make it a success,” he said. “We have tried a few new things this year to give the kids variety and without everyone playing their part on the day it would not be possible. One of the stand outs is the older kids are always willing to help the beginners. They form some great friendships!”

Make time to stop by The Cultural Centre in Woolies Carpark to see the latest exhibition from the Orange Art Society — ‘Art from the Heart’. The new exhibition was installed on Sunday and will run for the next two months, with all works available for sale at very reasonable prices. Admission is free and the art rooms are open most days — If the door is open and the banner flying, they are open. An official exhibition opening will be held Saturday 24 August at 6pm. And, in a new initiative for the art society, each month the exhibition will also include a special selection of work by a member artist.

This month’s featured artist is Orange’s Denis Bradley. Denis was brought up on a farm in the Orange District and was always drawn to the landscapes around him. “I envied those people who could paint and express their interpretations on canvas,” said Denis. “I thought that it was a natural ability that people had, and it was not until I did a Showcard and Ticket Writing TAFE course, I realised that it was a talent acquired by practice and study.” So, after several years of putting brush to canvas, Denis began to exhibit and sell some of his pictures. “The more I travelled around the
