One month until Spring – yay!

For anyone who’s been keeping up with my home air conditioning dramas, good news! The right colour is back in my cheeks, my wife’s warm and loving nature has returned, and I’m again seeing the world clearly, not through icicle covered eyes. How sweet life is again with our new Mitsubishi reverse cycle air conditioner!

Why our bees are heading north

There’s been a lot happening in my world recently and much of it has been to do with our Community Project this year known as Put Orange First. The team driving this regularly meets each Thursday morning over coffee and since commencing earlier in the year, positive things have slowly been happening. The job at hand is like turning the Titanic and sadly, it is what it is as they say, and patience is a great virtue to have. Keep watching for news and updates over coming weeks but the good news to take on board for now is that good things ARE happening. This issue also has another rather special extra feature for you to enjoy. It’s what we’re calling Food Favourites and it’s an extension of our popular Eats feature in OC Life. Check it out from page 39. We always have interesting stories among our pages in OC Life but let me encourage you read Jonathan Roe’s story on Page 4 this week. It’s a bit unusual but it does shed further light on what people, particularly those who rely on the land for their living, are facing. Still on hardship, we are all going through a period when those of us who are doing OK, have the opportunity to help those who aren’t. Now I don’t want to preach to anyone, but I do want to remind us all just how wonderful it is to receive an unexpected something from someone. We’ve often heard of random acts of kindness and when we do, it’s hard not to feel good, and moreso if we’re the recipient. An unexpected something could be something as small as a simple word of appreciation or encouragement for someone who deserves it, or as great as a financial donation to a needy cause. Based on my experience, I’m not sure what feeling is better, having been the giver or the receiver. Think about it.

When you hear the word livestock, you don’t immediately think of honeybees, or at least I certainly didn’t before speaking with local honey producer Vicki Lockwood at Goldfield Honey.

ut to honey producers, bees are just as much livestock as cows are to dairy farmers or sheep to graziers. And at the moment, just like primary producers all across Eastern Australia, our beekeepers too are struggling with the unprecedented drought. The lack of rain has meant fewer crops to pollinate and native trees aren’t getting the water they need to flower and produce the pollen and nectar vital to bees thriving. “The drought does have a huge effect on us. To keep our bees in optimum condition we have to supplementary feed them pollen, which we import from the United States, and we have to also feed them sugar syrup, because there is no nectar — it is a huge expense,” said Vicki. Founded by Vicki’s late husband Grant Lockwood, Goldfields Honey has grown from a small family operation with 50 hives to now be one of the largest

beekeepers in Australia running approximately 8,000 hives. Still run by Vicki and her four children, Goldfields Honey employs about 30 people, but the drought is taking its toll and has had a significant impact on honey production. “The drought has a huge effect of the total volume of honey,” said Vicki. “We have to look at value adding through our shop. We have contracts that we have to maintain, so if we don't produce the honey, we have to try to buy it in from other states.” This year they have also had to ‘agist’ their bees, trucking them up near Maryvale in Queensland. “We rented some land off the QLD State Forests and put our bees up there because the conditions were better. Logistically, it is a huge cost but, I guess unlike other farming, we do have the ability to pick our livestock up and move them to better conditions.” As well as producing honey, beehives are also rented out to pollinate crops, with Australia’s growing almond industry putting bees in high

demand. “Almond Pollination is the biggest migration of livestock that happens in Australia,” said Vicki. “In excess of 200,000 beehives go into pollinating the almond crops every August and they come from Queensland, NSW, Victoria and South Australia. “Historically, pollination was a very, very small part of our income but now because of the almond industry we concentrate on pollination a lot more.” Normally, after the almond pollination the bees would be brought back to the Central West to work local canola crops, but again the drought is wreaking havoc. “A lot of those crops haven’t been planted. Normally, we’d get nectar and pollen from them and Canola Honey and Pollen for breeding to start spring off, but obviously there’s been no rain and the canola isn't looking great,” said Vicki. “And after that, we usually come into a eucalypt flow, but the trees are not going to produce nectar if it doesn’t rain… we just need good rain like everyone else.”

CONFESSION TIME I have a shameful secret I’m going to share with you... Ready? Here it is: I read the comments under news stories. I know, I know, I’m wilfully putting my own mental health at risk every time I do so, but I can’t seem to help myself! I guess I’m just a glutton for punishment! No good has ever come from me delving into that dank cesspool. I’ve never looked back on a day and thought, ‘I’m really glad I got to read Joe Bloggs semi-illiterate, all-caps rant on how climate scientists have somehow concocted a world-wide conspiracy to sell electric cars’. Never… But I keep reading. Now, I’m not completely irresponsible and careless: I mean, I would never read YouTube comments!

fighter, but I don't feel like there is any rush. For me, it is all about getting experience and making adjustments so when I break through into the big scene, there won’t be amateur mistakes. “I do barbering on the side in the Orange Arcade— it is a trade that's run through my family for generations. But that's my side thing; training martial arts is my real passion and I hope to get to the top.

I try telling myself it is all about getting an awareness of how other people think. And it is fascinating how different people react to the same few hundred words and the same set of objective facts. You really get to see people’s thought patterns and reality filters on display! Read the comments under any Donald Trump post for examples. (Note: not recommended!) But right now, I want to talk about one particular genre of comment that you will see attached to online news stories everywhere. It is the commenter who feels the need to inform a media outlet that what they’ve just read is ‘not news’. Usually by exclaiming ‘How is this news! Why would anyone write such rubbish!’ et cetera, et cetera. Now there are many things about this behaviour that intrigues me, but first here is an answer for any of

those arbiters of ‘real news’ who’ve ever asked, ‘why would anyone write this story?!’ People read it. Surprised? That’s strange, because something led you to read it! Now, more than ever, publishers (and more importantly advertisers) can tell exactly how many sets of eyes have viewed a particular story and have a pretty good idea about what stories will get read. You may not like it, but the fact is other people do. Which leads me to another thing I want to say to this particular type of commentator: Not everything is about you. What? I Know! If you didn’t enjoy it, why the hell would anyone! Right? I certainly don’t care what Meghan Markle is wearing on any given day, but others seem to get enjoyment out of knowing. And I don’t feel the need to complain about someone writing to tell them. I’ve often wondered if this attitude has been created by the way news is consumed online, where a story is presented as separate, standalone piece to be judged. Maybe it gives weight to some pieces that wouldn’t be there on the printed page of a newspaper, lost among other stories. People seem to forget that newspapers have always been a grab-bag of different stories and opinions and not everything is going to be of interest to every reader. Today, online, there is so much easily accessible content available for people to enjoy, it baffles me that anyone would get angry when they come across something they don’t. Anyway… see you in the comment section.

FINISHING SECOND IS NOT AN OPTION FOR STUART BENNETT

ocal panel beater and drag racer Stuart Bennett now boasts the fastest LS engine car in Australia and he has his sights set on claiming the world record. At the Grudge Kings meet in Sydney last month, Stuart’s custom-built 2010 Pontiac GXP covered the quarter mile (402 metres) in just 6.39 seconds with a top speed of 225 mph (363kph). His run toppled the previous Australian record for an LS-motor of 6.58 seconds at 211mph. “So, we made a considerable jump on it,” said Stuart, who has only been racing this particular car since May last year and believes there is much more they can get out of it. “We are still developing the car and hoping for a bit faster now, the world record at the moment is 5.97 at 243 mile an hour and I think we can achieve that, but it is a lot of work—when you are going that fast, those little time increments are very large!” Going fast is something Stuart has a lot of experience in, in fact it is something he has done competitively for most of his life. “Yeah I raced motorbikes for quite some time and I was lucky enough I was fairly successful at it,” said Stuart. By ‘fairly successful’ Stuart means he has claimed

Australian titles in motocross, supercross, supermotard, endure, long track racing — pretty much every form of motorcycle racing he’s tried his hand at. He has twice represented Australia at international events and in 2012, two years after giving professional racing away, Stuart returned to take out the Australian four-day endure title in the veteran class. “I haven't really ridden a bike since,” said Stuart, who now gets his speed fix on the drag strip. “I’m a bit of a horse-power junkie and I've always had fast cars. I built one about five years ago and it made fairly good horsepower, drove it on the street only a couple of times and thought this is ridiculous I'm going to hurt myself! “It was a fast street car I could take to the strip, but I had a reality check and went this is silly, just make it a race car. So, I cut that one up and made a race car out of it.” Stuart sold that car 18 months ago and bought his current car — a purpose-built race car made by the legendary US Pro Chassis Builder Jerry Haas. So what makes someone spend so much of their free time and money for a few seconds on the race track? “I'm a bit mad, I suppose,” laughed Stuart. “But it is a hell of a rush! A lot of people think with drag racing you are going in a straight line, so it's pretty easy — it is far from

People don’t realise how fast it is until they stand on the start line and see you there one second and gone the next! You basically just vanish down the end of the track. It’s a whole new level of excitement, just an adrenaline rush!” But it is also a lot of work. For every fraction of a second shaved off the track time there are hours and hours of time spent in the workshop. “You are continually looking at the way things are working on the car and when you start getting up to the realms we are, it starts to become rather expensive,” said Stuart. “It consumes a lot of time, but I've got a very patient wife. She is very understanding. She knows that I am very passionate about the motor sport— I live, eat, breath it! With a national record under his belt, Stuart is now focused on improving his car’s performance and getting competitive on the national racing circuit. “The main thing now is to get competitive with the class racing, but I'd like the world record with it. Is that achievable? It is a hard task, but nothing is easy. Second is the first loser and I like coming first!”

Matthew excels

AT U.N. YOUTH CONFERENCE BY MELISE COLEMAN

Year 12 student, Matthew Brown was recently one of 10 students to attend the United Nations Youth National Conference after his standout performance in the U.N. State Conference event. It was quite some achievement!

eld in Melbourne, the weeklong conference also hosted teams from New Zealand and Taiwan. “I was a bit overwhelmed when I was told I was one of the 10 people, they took me away into a room with everyone who was running the conference and all I could think was oh no.. have I done something wrong?” Matthew laughed. “That was where they told me I had been chosen to go, I just thought wow.. I didn’t know what to do or what to say.” “It’s something that I am really passionate about, and it’s a possible career for me in the future, so having that opportunity was overwhelming for me.” This was the first time Matthew had competed in the State and National Conference, though he had the experience of his first ‘Evatt’ competition last year to back his confidence (where students debate resolutions on global issues as part of the U.N. Security Council). Matthew claimed he was excited to get to the National event as it offered everything he wanted and more. “It’s debating, its world politics, it’s everyone who is interested in that, in one room and that’s why I wanted to do it, having that political sphere, and world issues, you don’t hear about that in Orange. It’s also a great way to gain Youth Leadership opportunities.” Matthew continued, “The National Conference is State Conference

on steroids in a way, it’s students from across Australia, you’re not just getting opinions from NSW, you’re hearing issues from the Northern Territory, from Western Australia, and it’s interesting hearing what is relevant to regional NSW. For example, the drought, hearing our issues combined, all of those ideas coming together and what we can learn from each other, on a much bigger scale is very inspiring.” The U.N. Conferences bring world issues to young people, they are then asked to discuss them and learn about them, they also host workshops around different themes. To stand out in the conferences, you are judged on engaging actively across all debates, negotiating, building skills in public speaking, diplomacy and teamwork, as well as how well you offer opinions and staying as inclusive as possible with the team you are in. “I think the most valuable thing I took away from the conference was, don’t judge people when you first meet them. There was one consultation session we had, hearing everyone’s different stories on what is affecting them most in their communities, it got emotional and it was really eye opening because you are hearing different perspectives and you are learning to respect those people, and realise there are issues in our community that are in other communities as well. At the moment, Matthew is currently undergoing the HSC process, though, he mentioned when school was over, he would look at becoming a facilitator in his gap year and volunteer in Thailand. Jo is retired, [working one day a week at her job] and volunteers at the Cancer Council office each Friday, as well as volunteering as a ‘Transport to Treatment’ driver and volunteering at as a driver for the library as well. Spending most of her time with the Cancer Council, Jo has been a Transport to Treatment driver for the last 2.5 years and was inspired to help out as she has had her own brush with cancer. “This was something I could do to help other people who are dealing with cancer, to help with their recovery. “If you can get everybody who needs the treatment, to the treatment, you’re winning all the way around.” Cancer Council Transport to Treatment drivers pick up and/or drop off patients in Orange and surrounding areas [within a 200km radius] for treatment, doctors’ appointments, pathology appointments etc. Jo continued, “I think it is a really worthwhile thing to do, the people that we pick up and transport clearly need the service, they might be financially disadvantaged, socially disadvantaged, in the sense they have no vehicle or no one to

avigating the dating world can be tricky for anyone, but for young people with intellectual or learning difficulties, the challenges and stigma surrounding relationships can be overwhelming. A new documentary screening on SBS next week aims to break down the silence, stigma and prejudice that still exists around this subject. Love Me As I Am follows six individuals with intellectual and learning disabilities in a quest for romance that leads them right here to Orange. Relationship coach Liz Dore is known as a pioneer in the field and has spent more than 20 years providing relationship coaching and sexual advice to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Too often, she said, parents and educators focus solely on teaching protective behaviours around relationships, but she felt there was no one teaching how to build a good relationship. “I felt like in order to teach people about bad relationships or bad interactions, if side-byside with that you were teaching them how to develop good relationships, and how to tell the difference, it might be more fulfilling for them,” said Liz. There is an old adage: if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life.

ut that is a load of rubbish, says local cheesemaker SJ Pienaar. And that’s not because SJ doesn’t love her job, she does — very much. More than just a job, cheesemaking is her obsession – one that saw her turn her back on a career in engineering. But the fact is, it’s still hard work. “It's about 80% cleaning… it's not as glamorous as people think,” said SJ, who is now the owner of local artisan cheesemaking business, Second Mouse Cheese Co. While the cheesemaking process itself can be quite physical, often that is just the start of what’s required to care for a cheese through to being ‘table ready’. “Once they're made they'll get brined or salted, then they might go into ripening rooms. Some of the Cheeses get washed before they get packed. A lot of them have to get turned really regularly and then with things like a Brie and Camembert, we’re keeping an eye on how much mould growth we're seeing on the cheeses and when that reaches the right level, we pack them. “So there's a lot of work in it. And then there's the cleaning operation that goes with cheese being a high-risk product… So, hygiene and cleanliness are extremely important and cleaning takes up a big part of our day.” Growing up in the mining town of Mount Isa, SJ

BY JONATHAN ROE didn’t even know cheesemaking was a career. It was only a few years ago, after she attended a one-day cheesemaking course here in Orange, that the idea took root. “I just fell in love almost instantly,” said SJ. “I was just utterly fascinated at the idea that you could take milk, heat it up, a pinch of this and a drop of that and it would be cheese! It was some kind of black magic and it got seriously out of hand really quickly!” SJ started making cheese at home on a regular basis and scoured the internet for blogs and more and more recipes. Wanting to learn more, she dropped back to part-time work in order to spend a year studying cheesemaking at the Artisan Cheese Makers Academy of Australia in Adelaide. It was during this year, that SJ met Kai Woltmann, the founder of Second Mouse Cheese Co. “I met Kai at a party and we got talking and he said he was going to need help, so I started working for him a couple of days a week while I was still training,” said SJ, who was still doing engineering work at the time. “I got to a point where I decided I didn't want to be an engineer. There wasn't any point in staying with it, so I left,” she said. “I just knew that this is what I wanted to do. I’m just fascinated by it and the whole food industry… it's a really different sort of vibe and I wanted to be part of that kind of creativity and that passion. “I found I was scrambling out of bed in the morning to go to the cheese factory and I just loved it!”

In October last year, an opportunity arose for SJ to purchase the Second Mouse Cheese Co., a move that has presented challenges, but one she is excited to be grabbing with both hands. “It really, really was not what I anticipated, but I had this moment of realisation when I said to my husband, ‘If not now, when?’ It's not every day this sort of opportunity comes up. So, I thought I better do it and we did it!” said SJ. “It's really good. I've got a great team and also, I'm part of a bigger team here at the Agrestic Grocer and then there's that bigger community of all the other producers in Orange. We are all trying to achieve the same thing; adding to the attractiveness of the whole region and the more participants that are in that sort of game, the more people we attract to the region and the better it is for everyone.” Now, the important question for all of us consumers at home: just which cheese is our local cheesemakers favourite? “That’s the hardest question of all! It changes daily at the moment, but I'm really obsessed with our Ruby Blue. I get this real joy, every time we cut a wheel open — it's just so pretty! “But halloumi just never gets old and then the Double Cream Brie — I think I almost enjoy watching other people eat that more than I enjoy eating with myself! Residents at Eureka Villages, Albert Street Gardens, were invited for a morning tea and get together to celebrate the village and its ‘relaunch’.

Village Manager, Craig Kemister explained, “Today is about getting back to our core demographic, which is supported living for over 55’s, without being fully independent. We aren’t a nursing home, we are assisted living, so we have a 24-hour manager, food service, maintenance works, gardening, everything is done to assist them, so residents can maintain their independence, which is awesome. “We want to get back out into the community to refresh people’s minds on what we do and show them how we can help people. Eureka took over two

years ago and now it’s time to get back to where our other villages are, and that means concentrating on our over 55’s, where as before, we had a wider demographic.” Craig continued, “I think the biggest change I’ve seen over the past 12 months of being here is the residents are feeling a lot more comfortable within the village and that’s great, that’s what we are here for. The residents have all sorts of social activities happening, they have their own social club where they play bingo, movie nights and all sorts of stuff,

it’s really sweet.” Care providers were also invited along to the morning tea, including Mission Australia, who work closely with the village. New resident within the village, Flora Dihel added, “I’m happy here, I was looking around town to live by myself and I like to have people around me, I’m not the person to live by myself so this was perfect for me. I’ve not been here two months and have met so many friendly people. It’s important for me to be comfortable in my home, and I am.”

He must have been absolutely pooping his pants, not with the cops getting him, but with what his crime bosses would do to him if he was actually caught. Well, he got caught. In the back of his van was over $200 million worth of the drug Ice. Yep, you read that right, over two, hundred, million, dollars’ worth. The easiest drug bust ever, claimed our men in blue. I wonder if the guy was driving using his phone or changing radio stations, or eating takeaway? How else would he have lost concentration, knowing the pressure he was under? You’d have thought he’d be on the ball with maximum focus – you had one job mate, and all of that. Dumb and Dumber aren’t even in this guy’s league. Well, he’s in custody now. But the story hasn’t ended. He hasn’t given up his bosses (yet). I’m sure he’ll be offered a nice immunity package to dob them in. If he does get an offer that’s too good to pass on and he names some names, he’ll want to be on the first train to anonymoustown, because with $200 million worth of Ice under his responsibility, the heads of that crime world aren’t likely to forget him very quickly. It does make you wonder though, if there’s a guy driving around with 200 mill of drugs in the back of a van … how many other guys are there just like him who don’t get caught?

The only reason he got caught was because of his dumbness. Thank goodness for us he was useless. Back in my Uni and early married days, I was obsessed with collecting Snow Domes from every place I visited. I also hooked in many of my friends to grab one when they toured, also. From the resorts in Fiji, to Turkey, to one-horse towns in the middle of nowhere, if they had a Snow Dome, then I had to have it. My collection was massive. Back in 1993, as we came back through customs in Hawaii, the lady on duty called us over into the ‘to be inspected’ line. We were tired, hungry and in no mood to have our bags emptied. The first bag the lady opened was our ‘dunny bag’ – the hard case with the zipper all the way round that’s normally is filled with deodorants, creams and makeup. Not this time. She opened it up to find 24 Shaky Things with Snow looking at her – from Disneyland, to Stonehenge, to London Bridge, to the Grand Canyon, to Lake Tahoe … we had them all. She took one more look at us, zipped the dunny bag up and said “Please go through”. Yippee! Being a pathetic tourist has its benefits. Last Sunday night saw us watch the story of the guy who imported hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of Ice in liquid and ‘snow’ form inside Snow Domes. Bet he thought he’d get away with it, but they were on to him. I guess it’s not 1992 anymore mate Nowadays they’d probably crack open my tourist booty and see if there was just water and dandruff inside. I hoped they wouldn’t pick the Mickey Mouse one.

Cabonne Shire Council will receive $6.49 million, Orange City Council will receive $3.6 million, while Blayney Shire Council will benefit from $2.86 million in road funding.

The team has been successful in securing the competitive funding under the Federal Government’s Incubator Support Initiative as part of the Entrepreneurs’ Program.

Sparklabs Cultiv8 will develop their Stretch program to support a wider group of start-ups across the full growth lifecycle. The program will provide the connections and networks which growing start-ups need to succeed, including access to leading investors, researchers, customers and other key stakeholders. This grant recognises the critical role innovative start-ups like Sparklabs Cultiv8 plays in the economy, both locally and nationally. Incubators are key to the success of start-ups and this grant will help more start-ups in Calare break into new markets.

FUTURE DROUGHT FUND BECOMES REALITY Our local farmers stand to benefit from projects funded by the Coalition’s Future Drought Fund, which passed the Parliament last week. The Future Drought Fund will deliver $100 million in investment into drought preparedness and resilience projects every year, starting July 2020. Farmers and businesses in the Central West know how hard this drought has been. I myself have visited a number of farmers and seen how difficult this drought is. We promised to do this to support our farmers for future droughts, as well as this one, and we’ve delivered. This is the biggest support package for our farmers and will continue to support them should this terrible drought continue. The $5 billion Future Drought Fund means $100 million every year will be invested in drought resilience and preparedness. This is on top of the $1.9 billion we’ve already invested in Farm Household Allowance, Rural Financial Counselling, mental health funding, low interest loans and more.

SCHOOLS INVITED TO SHARE IN NEW FUNDING New equipment, building projects or additional targeted support could soon be on the way for schools across Calare with the Australian Government making up to $200,000 available for projects to benefit local kids’ learning experience. The Local Schools Community Fund will offer grants between $1,000 and $20,000 to contribute to a variety of school projects and associated costs. Projects could include small-scale extensions or classroom refurbishments, new computer facilities, mental health and counselling services, playground equipment, library resources, or sports facilities. Applications will be through SchoolsHUB. Schools may submit one application for up to $20,000 funding for each of their campuses. Applications close on 30 September 2019 and projects must be completed by the end of 2020.

Matt* and Megan* came to see me recently after attending a seminar I held. Matt works full time in mining and Megan works part-time as a teacher. They have three kids, are both in their early forties and were wanting to see if what they had set up was doing the job. is REALLY important. The question is whether insurance is being recommended for the interests of the client or the interests of the person ‘selling’ it for a commission? Matt and Megan had both been in great quality industry super funds, but their previous advice experience had resulted in their super being rolled over to a forprofit fund. We researched the running costs, returns, fees and options, which uncovered that they were now paying more than ten times as much in fees as what they would be paying had they stayed with an industry super fund and used the best options available. It is incredibly unlikely that a portfolio costing ten times as much in fees is going to be able to perform well enough to make up the difference in fees. As I explained to Matt and Megan, as I do all my clients, it’s about controlling the

In this Challenge the Staff and Employees of Wangarang bowl against each other over 2 games. The team with the highest average wins. This year about 12 staff and 45 employees faced off against each other. The Employees came out on top with an average of 93 while the staff averaged 86, and Wayne Nolan won the player of the day with a 194 game.

Last week the Ladies Probus Club of Orange North celebrated their 30th Anniversary at the Oriana with a Christmas in July themed lunch. An exciting day in itself, the Probus club also had four original members who were there during the very first meeting, 30 years ago in attendance; Joyce Onley, Grace Moad, Helen James and Marie McMullen. Joyce Onley explained, “It has been a very happy time in the club. You meet some wonderful people and we have had some very interesting speakers over the years, as well as trips away. We go to Sydney to see musical productions quite often and the club has recently been away to New Zealand.” “It does make me feel a bit old,” Marie McMullen laughed. “I’ve been on so many of the trips away and I’ve enjoyed them all. I’d have to say I will always remember the trip we took up the coast to a lovely garden, it was just beautiful.”

“This club is a wonderful opportunity for people who are retired to go places and meet new people. It’s really enjoyable, we have had a lot of fun over the years. It’s good to have something like this, when you can mix with people around your age.” President Gail Darley added, “Our club is all about fun, friendship and fellowship. We meet every third Wednesday at Duntryleague with a guest speaker, we then go for lunch afterwards. We actually have 10 people on the waiting list, we have to turn people away we are so full. Roundabout Central West hosted a fundraising at the CWA Hall on Saturday July 27th. The 75 guests were treated to a Dutch Indonesian dinner and a variety of entertainment during the evening. All the funds raised were going to fund an ECG Machine for the local hospital. Roundabout Central West in partnership with Orange Lions Club, Canobolas Lions Club and Day Break Rotary Club, are proud that they have reached the target to fund this valuable piece of equipment.

MILLTHORPE WINTER NIGHT MARKETS FIRE UP FOR FESTIVAL

Women Like Us’ middle-aged mouthy mamas of mirth, Mandy Nolan and Ellen Briggs return to Orange following sell-out shows at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, where they garnered two 5-star reviews. “Everything they say and do is the absolute word of sacred truth!’ noted Weekend Notes reviewer who officially declared the pair ‘Goddesses’. While according to Glamadelaide the audience ‘barely had time to draw breath between the hearty laughs’ and ‘it’s not just women who love this hilarious crowd pleaser.’” With 7 children between them Nolan and Briggs are as adept at delivering laughs as they are babies, and the two comics are renowned for their rapid-fire stand up. SO, YOU’RE CONSIDERING SOLAR? BY BOB HOLLAND

With the high cost of energy being the red-hot topic it’s become, my wife and I have decided to have a closer look at solar for our home. We have visited the idea briefly in the past but when we did, the varying advice we got did nothing to make us feel very confident.

What kicked us into gear again this time was a conversation with an electrician who knows his stuff and one we trust. It wasn’t a detailed conversation, but it was enough to help me understand solar a bit better and it prompted me to actually talk to a local solar company about getting a formal quote. That’s the stage we’re now at – we have some information and we have a quote. Without trying to be conclusive, I thought readers who may be considering solar for their home might like to hear what I’ve discovered so far. I’m sure there are a lot of people who are thinking about solar but like us, just need a bit more confidence and knowledge about how it works, how much it costs and how to go about it. Basically, to put solar on our home is going to cost $6,500 dollars. The trick I’m told is determining the right size system for our home’s needs. Apparently, without careful consideration of our situation and likely usage, it’s easy to install a unit that’s too big or too small for our needs. The type of panels you buy

are also important as, like with most things there’s good quality panels and there’s lesser quality. The installed cost of the system can also be affected depending on whether you have single or 3 phase power. I have also been advised to include a battery adaptor, not for now but for the future. Battery backups are one of the big issues that’s still being sorted. I’m told they are awfully expensive at the moment (tens of thousands) and best to wait until they improve the technology before going down that road. The $6,500 system we are looking at should provide us with enough solar energy each day, given normal circumstances. When you have solar power, there is a need to manage your usage a bit. By that I mean, using certain appliances at certain times of the day. That may sound a bit inconvenient, but I’m told you soon get used to doing things at different times and it doesn’t cause any problems. We have family with solar and they confirm this. Where a couple both work and are not at home during the day, the

CANOBOLAS COUNCIL OFFICES This week’s photo shows Canobolas Shire Council chambers in Kite Street, near the intersection with McNamara Street. The shire was gazetted in 1906 and its first chambers were in Byng Street, almost opposite the old police station. The offices in the photo were built in 1912. The shire covered a large rural area surrounding Orange city. Canobolas and other shires were later amalgamated to become Cabonne Shire Council. This building is now a specialist medical centre.

benefits of using solar power may be affected to some degree. The solar system we’re considering will not power our hot water and I’m told, for now, it’s better to think about that separately. It’s also worth mentioning that while we were doing out homework on solar, we received a flyer in the mail and saw an ad somewhere offering solar systems for a variety of prices. I have no idea how good or otherwise these offers were but either way, the advice I’m getting from friends who have had solar experiences is to deal with someone you know and trust, preferably someone local who has a good track record. That’s what we’ll be doing. We’re not far away from taking the plunge and at last, I’m actually looking forward to it. Solar energy has always made sense but like with any sizeable purchase, I want to feel comfortable about the product and who I’m dealing with. Hope any readers considering solar find my experience helpful.

I’m a tired mum. Our kids are six, four and one and a half. They’re growing up in Chile, because we’re missionaries. We face all the usual challenges of family life but also deal with the tiredness and confusion that come with living in another culture. My youngest has frequently been sick. Who is all-knowing, allpresent and all-powerful? I’m so thankful that I can speak to God my Father at any time. He may not give me everything I ask for (just like I don’t give my kids everything they ask for!), but what a comfort to know that I’m not alone, because my Father hears me. And I hear him, every time I read his Bible. Why not open the book of Mark in the New Testament to meet him for yourself?

They have been asked to come to the homeless lunch we do every week but no show!
