Winter in Orange for me is a time when I tend to feel a bit flat. It’s often too cold to do things outside, business is generally quieter and a lot of the activity we involve ourselves in during the warmer months doesn’t happen. Having said that, if you’re looking for a bit of light entertainment during winter, let me remind you of the various competitions and challenges we run each week in OC Life. For very little effort indeed, you could share in several hundred dollars’ worth of prizes each month.

‘MAKING HER HEART HAPPY’

Right.. if there is anyone out there who is the king or queen of procrastination, sit down, take a moment, sneak a read.. you need a little bit of Shani Nottingham in your life!

rtist, Shani says she has always created, whether painting or drawing, for as long as she can remember.. it’s been her ‘fave’ thing. “Some of my earliest memories are of drawing in notepads, colouring in, making things with my Mum and Dad. Throughout primary and high school, I won prizes and awards for art, and it became an important part of my identity. Then after school, I went on to do a Bachelor of Arts Visual Arts at Newcastle Uni, majoring in Photography and minor in plant and wildlife illustration. After this, I travelled overseas for a few years, with my then fiancé (now hubby). We ended up back in Australia, and we found ourselves in Central West NSW.” “After having our three kids (while studying) I began teaching too. But through all of this, I was always drawing, always painting, and doing the occasional exhibitions.” Five years ago, Shani started ‘Rare Pear Studio’, knowing she had to get back to art 6

in more of a professional way. “I wanted to model to my kids that you CAN lead a creative life, that you can follow your passion with hard work and dedication and see where it takes you.” “My inspiration varies depending on what is going on in my life in general, and what I need in my creative life, my creative life is a twister and is constantly evolving. My garden always inspires me, even if not to paint or draw it as such, it fills my cup and is my place of calm. I also love travelling and being in new places always makes your senses heightened, more alert. I take A LOT of photos, so this is always inspiring. I do get a lot of inspiration from online platforms, but I really do not spend too much time on there, I found I began to get overwhelmed with all the brilliance on there, and question myself, it’s too easy to feel like you are not enough, begin comparing, and get intimidated, that’s time better spent creating!” “I have a lot of things/projects on the go, and these feed off each other. I’ve often struggled to describe my work, because I can do many things. I can do colourful, whimsical and playful, but I can also

do subtle, soft neutral coloured work. I specialise in watercolour, but I also do lots of black ink linework. Recently I have been painting large canvases, big bold abstracts, and these are making my heart really happy, after tight, small illustrations, lashing out and being bold is really freeing.” “It’s funny, every time I get bogged down and a bit bleurgh, wondering why I do all of this, something lovely seems to happen, a new contact, a letter from someone, a new commission, an invitation to set up a workshop at a new venue, a collaboration with someone, a shop asks to stock my art or cards… Like the universe is saying KEEP GOING GIRL, and that inspires me to keep going, to keep working hard, to keep creating.” “New opportunities make it all worthwhile. I also get lovely feedback from people who have been to my workshops, or bought some art, or been sent one of my cards, or even just people who have found me on social media and left a kind, positive comment. Being told your work has made someone happy is always inspiring and keeps your mojo ticking over. Knowing your work is in people’s homes, is really very rewarding, and humbling too. Talking career highlights, Shani recalled Micador using her artworks for packaging on their new ink paints as a biggin’, “This was a huge thrill, I’m still chuffed, seeing your art on a product is a new buzz for me. But my biggest highlight would have to be when I won a big National online award in 2015. Kidspot had their Voices of 2015 competition for online creatives. From 7000 nominations, they whittled it down to 300 people. From this pool, the judges narrowed the finalists to a further 100, in total, in three categories. I ended up one of three finalists in my category, and went to Luna Park for a glam awards night, I frocked up with some friends who came to support me, and my hubby of course. And I won my category! When they read my name, I could not believe it! I walked around for about a week afterwards feeling like I was in a happy stupor! I still have the trophy proudly displayed and cannot quite believe I won it. It was really intense, but I learnt a lot from it, and really pushed my comfort zone, that’s always a good thing, and it led to some cool job opportunities too.” At the moment, one of Shani’s biggest ongoing projects is called, ‘The Breadtag Project’, which was

just this month featured in a Canadian magazine. “Breadtags/ breadclips/ breadies are those little bits of plastic we see around our bread, and some fruit and vegetables. They are small single use plastics, that get tossed away, and end up in landfill, or in waterways. They are just not good in our environment. A few years ago, I began collecting them, and made images from them, just playing. I began researching them and found out all sorts of information about these mundane little things.” “This grew into a desire to raise awareness about single use plastics, but also to be positive, creative, and empower people to talk about environmental issues, to get on board simply, to feel like they can do something good. So, people from all over the world send me their bread tags. I will be using them for an art installation that draws attention to plastic pollution, but also be creative, hopefully aesthetically pleasing, as well as stimulating. The most exciting part for me is the DOOMSDAY collection of bread tags, where I am trying to get the world’s largest, most comprehensive collection of bread tags.” “I am searching for as many countries and as many colours, styles, shapes etc as I can get. Crazy, but true! So far, I have 13 countries in the collection, but I need MANY more. At the conclusion of the project, the bulk of the tags will go to a wheelchair charity, raising funds for those in need of wheelchairs.” Along with the everyday busyness of life, Shani’s other projects include; completing a sketchbook for the American, Brooklyn based The Sketchbook Project, prepping for two exhibitions [one in September, one for later in the year], setting up and teaching workshops around the Central West, from Narromine to Sydney, designing a mural for a local school, along with private commissions. “My art journey is still ongoing and always evolving. I still have no idea what I want to be when I grow up! I keep waiting to say “OKAY! THIS IS IT! I HAVE IT ALL FIGURED OUT!” It has not happened yet.”

I’m what you call a musician that doesn’t play a musical instrument, I’d love to play but I’ve never fully committed myself to an instrument sadly. I’m so proud of my family, my daughter, Lily Elliott, who is now singing and playing guitar in her own band called ‘The Blindly Led Youth’. I’m very proud of

I’m not sure what we can do about it, but I hear so many complaints about parking in Orange that I feel something needs to be done. Just in the last week or two I have received letters from people with issues, one claiming to have been photographed in a school bus zone at a time when they were in another part of town, another from someone who believes nose in parking would ease traffic flows in Summer Street. Another friend, who was driving a sedan, got pinged in a loading zone after parking there for 2 minutes to drop off a food delivery to a local eatery. I also have personally had ongoing issues with the ludicrous parking arrangements in Lords Place outside our office. They are clearly no longer appropriate in this section of Lords Place since the Council carpark opened several years back. Over recent weeks we have also heard about people parking on the verge outside their homes being fined, I’m also aware that the taxis are currently concerned about fines their members are receiving because they are trying to drop people off in practical areas but are breaking the law in the process. From what I’ve heard their concerns are very valid and good sense suggests a review of current policies is needed. Pick up zones around some of our schools have also been in the news recently telling of people breaking laws by stopping to pick their kids up in areas where they shouldn’t. I’ve also heard there are people being fined in one of the streets somewhere near where the old hospital used to be. My information is the signage is very confusing and possibly no longer appropriate given the hospital is

no longer there. And so it goes on. My problem is not about the rules, but more about how some situations warrant a different outcome, and not necessarily a penalty. For me, I’d like to see a more simplified appeal process where straight-forward and easily justified circumstances can be verified and dealt with very quickly. In my own particular case, I feel some good and reasonable sense needs to be applied to my rather unusual office situation, and not just applying a one size fits all type thinking. I think for me, what annoys me most about having to write about things like this, is that there seems to be so many, what I’d call basic or fundamental housekeeping issues that our Council should be dealing with, but they just can’t seem to get the job done. I know it’s going over old ground, but issues like the Robertson Park toilets, public toilets in areas where visitors can access them easily, or at least clear signage about where they are, changing the parking restrictions in those areas where the current ones are no longer appropriate and so on. There’d no doubt be many more issues that seem to remain on the to do list indefinitely as well. It seems to me that our Council has almost come to a standstill on getting a lot of straightforward things done in a timely manner. Even when they do make a decision, I hold my breath wondering who’ll lodge the next rescission motion. I find it all sad and disappointing, especially since, as a businessperson, I see so much that should have been dealt with before this. Am I the only one who feels some of our Councillors may not be up to the task?

ith the sad passing of Melise’s niece just two weeks before her 21st birthday from cancer, it was the moment she stood strong, determined to make a difference. Melise explained, “It’s raw, the mere thought makes my eyes water and my chest hurt so much that it takes my breath. She always talked about flowers, together we talked flowers all the time, she loved the dyed rainbow roses.. I wasn’t a huge fan of them,” Melise laughed. “I like natural coloured roses, we used to throw back comments here and there about them. Towards the end we put the rainbow roses in her room so when she woke up she knew that we had been there.” Melise continued, “My niece is one of the reasons I took up floristry, I figured, she had cancer three times in her short life and what was I doing with mine? So, I thought why waste it? I should be doing something that I love.” “I didn’t want to celebrate when she passed away, I wanted to celebrate her life and her birthday is in July, so, for the month of July I ordered in as many rainbow roses as I could, with all profits from the sales of the roses going to ‘Love Your Sister’ and the ‘Chris O’Brien Lifehouse’ they were amazing with my Brother and his family.” “I want to give back and help any family that might be going through it, so many people are affected by cancer. With the rainbow being a symbol of positivity, hope, peace and light after a storm, it was a natural choice.” When Melise posted about the idea on Facebook, she mentioned she was overwhelmed with the support that she received and is still receiving today. “Blayney is awesome, they just get behind a lot of things, they always have a huge response when there are people in need. When I put it out there I had people who I had not met before come in and they would open up to me as to why they are buying them, I’ve even got a window where they can write a tribute or a little message on the wall. It’s

been awesome, it really has.” It’s not only the Blayney community who have jumped on board, “I had a lady ring me from Sydney, she just wanted to send some to the local oncology department in Orange, I also have 12 arrangements to go to each nurses station in Orange. Without generous people like this, it just wouldn’t be possible.” “I’ve sold over 400 stems which is excellent for a small community. I was truly overwhelmed and completely stoked! I’m so proud of our community.” A well-known advocate of the insidious disease, Samuel Johnson OAM is an Australian actor, radio presenter, voiceover artist and philanthropist who is campaigning over Australia and began ‘Love your Sister’ with his sister Connie. “I think I’ve always related to Connie’s story because it was much the same as my niece. “I’ve been messaging him like mad, I’ve said ‘right! You’re coming to Blayney’, I want to show him what little towns can do.” Melise added, “I’m not precious if there are any florists out there who want to join me in selling Rainbow Roses to raise money for research, PLEASE do! The more the merrier. I’m sure if Samuel Johnson from Love your Sister were to visit, he would visit Blayney first. Why wouldn’t you?”

Intellectual Property: You must ensure you are buying all of the critical components of the business including Intellectual Property rights; Business Name, Trade Marks, Patents, Trade secrets/formula, procedure for transfer/ assignment etc (refer IP Australia website) 7. Social Media & Contact Numbers: Website domain names, emails, facebook administrator rights to pass, mobile phone numbers can be very important etc. 8. Completion Date: Can be 42 days or otherwise agreed. Do your finance requirements or leasing or other logistical issues require a shorter or longer settlement? 9. Buying Assets or the Entity: For small businesses generally the individual assets are purchased (generally preferred) as opposed to the entity that owns the business assets, an exception to the rule can be real estate agencies which have rent rolls (ie where the shares of a company may be acquired as opposed to the business assets individually); ensure you seek legal advice before you purchase the shares to an existing company or the units of an existing unit trust or you become a member of another person’s self-managed superannuation fund.

FREEMASONS Taking good men and making them better

Freemasonry is the world’s largest and oldest fraternal order, and still very much active in the Central West.

he exact origins of Freemasonry are lost to history, but its traditions and rituals are said to date back as far as the 15th Century if not further. Freemasons base their organisation and traditions on those formed by medieval stonemasons to protect the secrets of their trade and to pass on the knowledge to apprentices. To this day, the tools and instruments of the stonemasons trade form an important part of the rituals of Freemasonry, although it has been hundreds of years since the practical knowledge of stonemasonry was a requirement of membership. It is true that there remains a secretive side to

Freemasonry, but members insist it is more a matter of keeping their rituals private and reject the popular notion they are a ‘secret society’. In recent years there has been a concerted effort to build their public profile, both to attract new members and dispel some of the wild speculation that abounds about the fraternal order. But when Rob Finlay joined the Freemasons 52 years ago, he knew little more about it than it was an organisation his father enjoyed being part of — that was enough for him. “My Dad was very involved in the community and I had a great respect for him. He didn’t belong to anything that wasn’t worthwhile, so I joined pretty early and I haven’t looked back,” said Rob. Times have certainly changed said Rob, who

welcomed Orange City Life into their lodge room here in Orange — something unthinkable in years past. “My Dad was a Mason, but I’d never been inside the lodge room until I joined because they didn’t do that then,” he said. “I’ll guarantee you would not have had this interview when I joined 50 years ago, but we realise we are in a changing world and there is really only a very small portion of it that is secret.” Another sign of the changing times is that you will now find Masons actively publicising their activities on social media platforms like Facebook. At 27, Matt McClure is one of the youngest members of the local Masonic Lodge, and he is passionate about sharing his love for the ancient order. “We are always trying to attract new members and we are trying to inform people about Freemasonry. I’m active on the Central West Freemasons Facebook page and if people have a question about freemasonry, we’re there to tell them,” said Matt, who actually became interested in Freemasonry after reading the Dan Brown novel, ‘Lost Symbol’, which led to him discovering both his grandfathers were Masons. Freemasonry is open to any man regardless of race or religion; the only requirements are that a candidate must be of ‘good character’ and believe in a ‘supreme being’. But religion and politics are topics strictly forbidden in the lodge itself. “There is no religion or politics talked; it is a place you go to get along with people,” said Rob. “You can sit down in lodge, whether you are Christian, Jewish, Muslim or Buddhist— they can all sit down beside each other as brothers.” At its core, Freemasonry is about taking good men and trying to make them better, Rob tells me. “I look back and think I wasn’t bad then, but I’m better now” he said. “And our goal is to be better again, so you never reach your goal. You are constantly learning about doing good, how you can do that and how you should be a better person… it gives you moral direction, I suppose.”

The lessons of Freemasonry are passed on through scripted, private ceremonies that have changed very little over the centuries. “The rituals are most important because those are the teachings of Freemasonry,” said Matt. “The ritual is there for the candidate, which we call the person receiving the work, he and he alone is getting the information and that is for him to take away and interpret it in his own time and then see how that relates to his life and the people around him and how he can become a better person from that.” “And that’s what it has done for me,” said Rob, “it has made me a better person.” Both Matt and Rob also speak fondly of the friendships they’ve made through Freemasonry. “It is a place where two very different people can go and they are judged as equals,” said Matt. “And it gives you this avenue of meeting new people that you wouldn’t usually meet… and that is not job links or anything like that, it is pure enjoyment of fraternity and being around one another.”

...You are constantly learning about doing good... “Take Matt and I,” said Rob, “there’s at least three or four years between us, but nevertheless I travel with him, I respect talking to him and I think he respects me — we can bridge barriers and I think that is pretty unique situation, because we’ve got this shared experience.”

And just how all-consuming Liz knows well. For much of the last two decades, Liz has been researching and writing about her own ancestors who hail from Devon in the UK. But last year, she was finally able to publish her years of research in her book Devon Born — a true labour of love. On 2 August, Liz will join Associate Professor Tanya Evans in presenting a History Council of NSW Seminar ‘Memory Research and the Family Historian’ as part of the Orange Readers and Writers Festival. “People just love family history and there are certainly plenty of people in Orange who do it,” said Liz. “It is bringing to life your ancestors and finding ways of doing that, so you might have names and dates of birth, deaths and marriages but you need to fill that out somehow.’ Those attending the seminar are encouraged to bring in an item related to their own family history of local

She is currently in the final stages of writing a history of the Dalton family of Orange, which will be published later this year. “They were probably the most prominent family in Orange for many decades,” said Liz, whose book covers

how the Dalton family went from poor Irish immigrants to building a vast business and pastoral empire based in Orange. “I think it is fascinating because there are many facets to the story: their success in business, they also bought up a lot of pastoral properties and went into sheep and wool, they were very strong Catholics and most of all they never forgot their Irish past and were very much involved in the Irish cause for home rule,” said Liz, who has spent two years on this book. A Bush Summit was held in Dubbo last week bringing together government, industry and our farmers to discuss what makes our regions so strong and how we can continue to support our country communities through this devastating drought. The Prime Minister spoke at the Summit outlining additional measures the Australian Government will be implementing to help our country communities get through what is one of the worst droughts in our nation’s history. These measures include:

• Re-introduction of the Future Drought Fund Bill to the Senate during the next sitting fortnight. The Fund will see an initial investment of $3.9 billion, rising to $5 billion over the next ten years, providing a sustainable source of funding for drought resilience works, preparedness and recovery;

• Establishment of a national plan to enable Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry to become a $100 billion industry by 2030; • Appointment of a National Soils Advocate to address issues such as poor soil structure and salinty; • Establishment of the National Water Grid which will develop a pipeline of projects, such as dams, and bring together the world’s best scientists to better understand and build a plan around water allocation, capture and storage; and • Commencement of a House Select Committee that looks at the future of rural and regional Australia. These measures build on more than $7 billion in Australian Government support - the largest drought relief package in our nation’s history. It’s vitally important we keep ramping up drought support as conditions continue to worsen. I have made many speeches to the Australian Parliament calling for this to happen and while there is more work to do, this latest raft of measures is positive.

VICTORY FOR FARMERS AS FUTURE DROUGHT FUND PASSES HOUSE OF REPS The Future Drought Fund Bill passed the House of Representatives on Monday night and it is hoped the Bill will quickly pass through the Senate so the Australian Government can get on with the job of delivering the fund. The $5 billion fund will ensure $100 million a year in perpetuity towards drought resilience and preparedness.

MEETING WITH NEW AGED CARE MINISTER

I spoke in support of the Bill and below is an extract from my speech: I rise to support the Future Drought Fund Bill 2019. Drought relief and dealing with the devastating effects of drought is the top priority of our electorate of Calare in the Central West of New South Wales. Backing our agricultural sector is vital for Australia’s economic future and vital for Australia’s food security. This Bill is all about backing the future of agriculture in Australia. It will help build resilience in the farming sector. It will help farmers recover from drought, but also build preparedness and resilience for future droughts. It will grow to be a $5 billion fund with $100 million drawn down every year . . . The national drought relief effort stands at over $7 billion. It is the largest drought relief effort in Australia’s history. My fear is that this drought is going to continue for some years yet, so we need to prepare ourselves for that possibility and the possibility that the worst is yet to come. The Future Drought Fund is important because it helps prepare for the continuing effects of this drought and also future droughts. Drought support will need to be ramped up as conditions continue to deteriorate.”

I recently met with the new Aged Care Minister, Richard Colbeck, in Canberra to discuss priorities for the Central West. Aged care is vitally important to the future of our country communities. If our older population can’t stay in our communities that they love, they will simply move away. It’s very important that they’re able to stay in and around their support networks. Minister Colbeck really understands the needs of our country communities and I’m looking forward to working with him during this term of government.

He’s a pretty layback type of guy who seems content to let his work speak for itself. A pretty unassuming fellow on face value, but clearly one who takes pride in the way he goes about his business. He’s just recently taken over A1 Mechanical and Exhaust and here’s what he had to say for himself when I asked him about his new venture. Daren Golding certainly knows his

His reputation for doing a quality job is evident in the number of customers that have sought him out since he went out on his own three months ago. “I’ve been flat out and it has only been by word of mouth that customers know I’ve come here, but every day people call up and say I only just heard you’d moved here and want to book their car in,” said Daren, who took over A1 Mechanical in in May. “I’d thought about it for a few years and I’d looked into it, but I was always happy where I was working, so I stayed with it. But it was time for a change and it’s been good.”

AUSTRALIANS ARE CHRONICALLY UNDER-INSURED. Most people insure their cars and homes, but don’t insure their most valuable asset… themselves and their ability to produce an income. Far more people lose their homes due to the main breadwinner being unable to earn an income (either because they die or are sick or injured for an extended period) than from house fires. Yet we all insure our homes!

Please don’t get me wrong… it would be mad to not insure your home and your car, but it makes EVEN MORE sense to insure yourself. Think about it in terms of a car. People fork out hundreds of dollars a year on car insurance policies to get possibly $30,000 or $40,000 if their car is written off. Think about the potential lost income if the person driving that car dies or is injured and cannot

work for an extended period (or potentially never again). How would your family be impacted if you no longer had an income? This all comes down to what is considered ‘normal’. In Australia, insuring your car is just what you do. Insuring yourself is something most of us don’t even think of. Let’s work together and change that to make sure you and your family are protected. This is your backup plan! Everyone should have a financial plan and a key part of any good plan is having a back-up plan in case plan A falls through. Chances are you will live a long life and be able to earn an income for the majority of your working life. But should something go wrong and that not be the case, how do you and your family replace that lost income? Centrelink? Minimal support, no chance of replacing what you were able to earn working! Workers Comp? Potentially for a little while, but only if it is related to work. Parents? Many of them will be struggling to fund their own retirement, let alone support you and your family if you have no income. Your partner? Sure, they can work, but if you’re a two income family, what does life look like with one income missing. Potentially your partner may need to reduce hours of work to care for you so that one income could be much less. The solution: you outsource the risk to an insurance company. In exactly the same way you outsource the risk of paying to replace your car to a car insurance

company, you can outsource the risk on your life and income to a life insurance company. Life insurance can be paid for out of your superannuation and income protection premiums are tax-deductible and actually much cheaper than you might expect in most cases. Don’t scrimp when it comes to protecting you and your family though! You could buy the cheapest, dodgiest insurance going around, but find that when it comes to claim, the insurance was worthless. Or you can invest a little time and money to get proper protection in place. You could get help from a financial adviser who gets paid commissions, but you risk working with someone driven to make a sale rather than recommend what is best for you. Or you could work with an independent financial adviser who does not accept commissions, meaning your premiums will be 30% lower than they would otherwise be, and incorporate your back-up plan into a broader review of your financial situation. You have many choices in life. This is one of them… ignore having a back-up plan at your peril! Garry, it’s Noice How do I explain this to an American? I need some help. Regular readers of this fine publication know that I have a beautiful girl (about to turn 21) studying and playing hockey in the college system in the USA. She’s been there for 2 years and has teamed up with a fine young American man. We approve. Nice. Or should I say, Noice. Unable to get away from her Aussie roots, and we hope she never does, she’s got her housemates listening to Aussie 80s music, she’s made a pav, and they love Tim Tams. A little while ago she uttered the expression “Noice, Garry” in response to something good that happened. Curiosity about the phrase got the better of the boyfriend, and he asked her to explain. She didn’t know where to begin with words that would make sense to an Aussie, let alone an American, so she has asked me to prepare something for him next time we are on the phone or Facetime. Ok, here goes … let me know what you think of this a logical explanation. Once upon a time there was an awesome Aussie Rules football player named Garry Lyon. He played 226 games over 13 seasons at centre half-forward for the Melbourne Demons, captaining them for six. He was named in Melbourne’s ‘Team of the Century’. Now, we change sports to the gentleman’s game. Our greatest ever wicket-taking off spinner, Nathan Lyon has taken 343 wickets, and will overtake the great DK Lillee this summer to become our third best-ever wicket taker, only behind Ooh-Ah, Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne. Nathan is often called the ‘GOAT’, an acronym for Greatest Of All Time in regards to his off-spinning prowess. However, calling someone the GOAT on the field is going a bit too far, so our old

with wicket-keeper Matty Wade, started calling him ‘Garry’, in humorous reference to the Aussie Rules guy from the 80s and 90s. Even though they aren’t related and hadn’t met each other, Nathan’s nickname of ‘Garry’ stuck firm. Firm. Now, whilst not our greatest ‘keeper, Matt Wade was one of our best non-stop talkers (and sledgers), often just talking to fill air with white noise in an attempt to mentally disintegrate the opposition. Almost after every ball that Nathan bowled in test matches against South Africa in 2016, and even if the delivery wasn’t very good, Matt Wade would utter the words “Noice Gaaaarryyyyyy” in encouragement and affirmation of his talented teammate. Whilst in normal conversation the word ‘nice’ would be the same in Australia, England and the US, when emphasis and hyperbole is required from the Land Down Under, we have a tendency to exaggerate a word or two. Hence ‘Nice’ becomes ‘Noice’, paying homage to the bogan that lies dormant in just about all of us. So much so, that on the third ball of Nathan’s first over in a test match against Pakistan in early 2017, the entire crowd had a secret plan to scream out ‘Noice Garry’ in homage to the man, but he spoilt it by taking a wicket … and everyone joyously cheered instead. Go figure – the Aussie way. Just like the saying ‘Doing A Bradbury’, (I’ll leave Annabelle to try to explain THAT to the yanks), the coined phrase “Noice Garry” is now part of our language. There are Facebook pages dedicated to these two words, Memes praising both the man and the phrase. T-shirts, hats and costumes. Especially over the summer months, Australians are more likely to say Noice Garry than they are to just say Nice. Apart from his legendary status as a cricketer, this two-word idiom has seen the GOAT elevated to cult hero status in Oz. There you go America, clear as mud. I hope we win The Ashes and everything’s Noice.

HITS RIGHT NOTE FOR OUR DROUGHT AFFECTED KIDS

Rural Aid’s latest project ‘The Gift of Music’ is breaking down barriers for rural and regional kids all over Australia.

Earlier this week, Orange High School were the lucky recipients of new instruments for their school. Rural Aid General Manager Wayne Thomson explained, “We really want to be able to consider children’s mental health through this time of drought when it is very tough on them. Maybe some were out carrying dead sheep with Dad this morning, this is just to be able to give them a bit of a break - music is just one of those things, they can escape from the realities of life on the land, which aren’t so pretty.” Together, Rural Aid donated brand new Guitars, a Saxophone, some Percussion, Djembe Drums, and a box of Lego. “When we were driving here I said to the team, ‘how are high school students going to go with a box of

Lego?’ And when we walked in the first thing they said was wow look at the Lego, that’s the coolest thing ever,” laughed Wayne. “At the end of the day we want more kids playing music, and the looks on their faces when we played in the drum circle, its just worth it. It’s beautiful, it becomes really emotional. If this becomes a bit of an escape for them, then we are ticking the right boxes.” During their travels, Rural Aid have also made stops to donate hay to local farmers and gift cards to those also in desperate need. “Despite the green look of the paddocks, It’s very dry and very tough. We delivered hay to farmers who are still hand feeding and it was truly appreciated. A town like Orange which is still large, during times

like these, the economy suffers. So we give our farmers gift cards so they can use that money in their local community.” Year 12 student, Olivia Maksymczuk added, “We are over the moon, it’s awesome, it feels like Christmas. We’ve never had the djembe drums before, so its really cool to sit in a circle and play as a group and really connect and I guess that’s what it allows us to do. By getting new guitars, and a new sax, all of the junior students have the opportunity to learn on really great new instruments. “We can’t thank Rural Aid enough, as a musician, all of our senior music students really appreciate it, but also the school as a whole, they have given us the opportunity to start those juniors with quality instruments.”

A simple haircut adds to a brighter future BY MELISE COLEMAN

Last Week Tangled Hair and Beauty and the Benevolent Society’s ‘Brighter Futures’ teamed up to give 15 kids something that many of us take for granted, a free haircut.

It was the result of Benevolent Society’s Orange and Bathurst Team Leader, Aaron Jackson, thinking out loud. “I bring my family here to get their haircut, I had a chat with Hannah, who then spoke with Rose and they were only too happy to donate a few hours to make this happen.” “I thought it would be a great idea to involve our clients as a lot of them come from really challenging backgrounds, regarding a lot of trauma. Appearance probably isn’t necessarily the top thing on their agenda whether it be cost or time reasons.” “Today was a great opportunity for a non-government organisation and a

local business to partner together and give something to people who aren’t doing so well.” Tangled Senior Hairdresser, Hannah DeGraaf said, “We love to be able to help out and the girls were so excited when I talked to them about it in our team meeting. The kids have done so well, we didn’t have any tears and we are already excited to organise the next one.” Mum Remi Wood, watched on as her five year old daughter, Melody received a haircut and hair straighten with a big smile on her face, “I was happy to get involved with this as I thought today was important for Melody, she gets

this little experience with other people surrounding her. I think ‘Brighter Futures’ does an amazing job with organising things like this.” “Melody loved it, she loves being glamorous, she collects hair extensions, butterflies and clips, so she was in heaven. This is actually the first time she has had her hair straightened, due to her fine hair I’ve been a bit scared to do it, but she was like a statue watching on, she loved every minute. I think it’s amazing that Tangled have come together to do this for the kids.” Congratulations Tangled and Brighter Futures, what a great initiative.

Your comment conveys urgency about the plight of Orange retailers, “Locals need to be convinced why and encouraged to start buying from local retailers now. Orange needs to start turning things around now, in fact RIGHT NOW!” There is one simple change that would vastly improve the Orange shopping experience. It would require a simple directive from Orange City Council. It is to change reverse angle parking to nose in angle parking. BY MELISE COLEMAN Each school holidays St Barnabas Anglican Church hosts an eight game chess tournament and last week over 50 kids, aged from six to 16 years old took part in the latest challenge. Junior Chess Coordinator, Joe Cummins explained, “We have hosted this tournament in school holidays for the last 15 years. Chess maintains or is even increasing its popularity, even among the tech savvy kids, they love to come and play against another students. We have seen an encouraging number of girls who are getting involved each year too which is great.” Though they may look serious in the photos, the handshake after the game is done as a reminder it’s a fun tournament and a great opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.

The second annual Orange Winter Fire Festival fires up next weekend, with more than 30 events showcasing the region at its winter best. Now in its second year, the three-day festival showcases Orange and the surrounding villages through a program of bonfire events, char-grilled feasts, campfire cooking, fireside reading and award-winning wines. Festival highlights in 2019 include: Millthorpe Night Markets: Kick off this year’s festivities from 5pm on Friday 2 August at the hallmark event of the festival — night markets in the historic Millthorpe Village. Free to attend with vendors peddling hot soups, cheese toasties, beers and wine to stave off the cold. Fondue by the fire: Dip into melted cheese fondue as you snuggle up by the fire at Rowlee Wines with a glass of wine. 12pm 3-4 August for $45 per person. Winter at Heifer Station: Spend a perfect winter afternoon with a bonfire at Heifer Station Wines on Saturday 3 August – there’ll be glasses of wine and rustic mugs of goulash, while children devour cheese toasties, hot chocolate and fire-toasted marshmallows.

Readers and Writers Festival: Hear from five guest authors as they speak about their latest works including Meg Keneally, Tim Ayliffe, Summer Land, Felicity McLean and keynote speaker Debra Adelaide. Tickets are $90 each. Knitting workshop: Orange’s very own fleece experts, Adagio Mills will run a knitting workshop from 3pm on Saturday 3 August. Test out your knitting skills and take a tour of the mill to see how the yarn is made. Tickets are $65 per person and include all the materials you’ll need. Feast and Fire Long Lunch: Join Botanica Flora’s workshop in Milthorpe’s historic theatre to learn how to build your very own centrepiece using foraged florals and foliage. Describe yourself in three words. Outgoing, I worked all my life, I’d help anyone if I could.

My Grandmother used to live at Walgoolan, they had a big property there, I used to have Christmas with them and go on hay rides, there was never a dull moment.

What is your favourite childhood memory? We lived at Hillston, I was only young and we had a home there for a while because my Father was a shearer, I can still remember my Mother.. there was a veranda, she was standing on it.. and a big black snake was slithering along, so, she got the spade and she went ‘oop’.. no more black snake *laughs* I was watching it. Another thing looking back on my life I enjoyed travelling to town in a horse and sulky, it was good, you’d sit up like Jackie *laughs* oh yes, it’s been a good life.

What did you want to be when you grew up? A Nurse, but my Mother wouldn’t let me. She was a nurse and she said nope! We lived at Spring Hill and we used to have to come into Orange on the train (about a 45 min trip), and she said no way, she was a bit strict. She didn’t want me travelling and staying in the nurse’s home because she didn’t know what I’d get up to. *laughs* So I couldn’t do that, so I did the next best thing. I was working at the Mayfair.

This week I caught up with the beautiful Olga Wheeler. “I feel proud to be 99. I’ve had a long life, and I’ve had a good life, strangely enough it’s gone quickly. I’ve never wanted for anything; my children and grandchildren are wonderful to me.” Where and when were you born? Woodstock in 1919. What are the most important lessons you’ve learned in life? There’s a lot.. to be a good neighbour, treat other people how they would like to be treated. What big world events were the most memorable while you were growing up? Oh I’ve got to think back.. the Harbour Bridge was

opened, that was a wonderful thing, I remember the ribbon being cut and de Groot. I didn’t go to it because I was too young and many people, like us couldn’t afford it. That’s one of the best things I think I’ve seen. What do you miss about the good-old days? You can leave your back door open, you looked after people if you could. We went to dances in Spring Hill, that was wonderful. The

What was your first job? I went to school and finished sixth class, then I left and I used to scrub the Principal's house, I used to get four shillings.. four shillings! I scrubbed the lino floors, and polished it, on your hands and knees. Gee that was a long time ago *laughs* What was your favourite job? I was in the Hospitality business and I used to love doing the big dinners at the hotels and I did counter lunches, and dinners. The nicest one I think was way back, during the Cherry Blossom festival, we had the Police Pipe Band come and stay at the Royal Hotel and I served them, it was lovely.

NELSON’S STORE This week’s photo is of Nelson’s general store, which was once a familiar landmark in Orange. It stood on the northern side of Byng Street just east of Sale Street and was run by Benjamin Nelson. Nearby was a flour mill, also run by Nelson. The store burnt down in November 1868 and Nelson built a smart new store on the northern side of Summer Street almost opposite Dalton Brothers’ store. The fire prompted citizens to start a voluntary fire brigade in Orange.

What could you tell me that I would be surprised to learn about you? I used to ride a bike, I drove a car, a motorbike, a pushbike, I played golf, I played tennis, I missed a hole in one by that much [shows a centimetre difference].. I got a hole in two instead. *laughs*

What are you looking forward to when turning 100? I’m looking forward to my party *smiles* and my letter from the Queen.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun now? *laughs* Reading, or knitting or crocheting, that’s all I can do at the moment. I used to have a beautiful garden I can’t get out to it now. I love me hoy! I go twice a week to the Bowling club and have lunch up there.

What’s the secret to making 99? I’ve worked hard all my life, I’ve seen the depression I’ve seen the wars, fires, drought, I’ve just about seen everything. I’ve been happy, I don’t like missing my loved ones, I’ve had my ups and downs and I’ve been sick, but.. that’s life isn’t it.

Who is the person who influenced your life the most? Why? I’d say my husband, Leonard. I loved him very much, we did so many things together, it was a big blow when he went.

What are you most proud of? I had four lovely children, three daughters and a son.. I have one left, and I’m very proud of her, she’s wonderful to me. Especially in the past year I broke my arm and it’s still not right. I’m back on my feet again though.

And this is the heart of the Christian message. Grace happens when God does not give us what we deserve for the wrong things we have done. Instead he forgives us, which comes out of grace, and gives us eternal life - something we have done nothing to deserve. If we only get what we deserve, then Karma is all we can hope for. But Christ promises grace. And grace is only possible because of the cross of Christ. Where Christ satisfied the judgement we deserve from God so we can experience grace. Grace really is amazing.
