Another financial year is about to come to an end and so many people are still saying where has the year gone? It’s amazing how time really does fly when you’re not taking too much notice. Last week I was watching a movie we had recorded some time back and I recalled some of the ads that appeared. It seemed like only yesterday that I was watching them, until I noticed a date on one of the ads - 2014!

Dedication brings its own rewards

Speaking of times past, make sure you read my comment on page 7. I’ve also done something we don’t normally do in OC Life. I decided to follow up on a reader’s concern about a footpath along Forest Road. You can read about that on page 8 of this issue. To keep fanning our Put Orange First Community Project, we also feature a story about a great local business this week. You can read about that business in Lovin Local on page 14.

If you’ve noticed a different look to Orange City Life over recent weeks, let me tell you why. I’m one of those bosses, who for the most part, likes to give my team the space to show off their unique talent and skills. How our magazine looks each week now falls to our Production team of Annabel Wooding and Rachel Lawson. These ladies do the bulk of the design and layout and I have to say, they seem to really be enjoying their work of late. Even I get excited to see what they present me with each week. Of course, before it gets to them, our writing and photography team do their thing as does our sales team and our Director of First Impressions April Broome who co-ordinates all manner of bits and pieces. At the end, you get the product that’s in your hands now. I’m so proud of what they are producing of late, I hope you are too.

There’s a new house on the block at Spring Street Children’s Centre thanks to the generosity of the Borenore/Nashdale Men’s Shed.

icture a sea of laughter, smiling faces, doorbells ringing, doors opening and closing, the question “Would you like a coffee sir” over and over - that was the glorious vision at Spring Street Children’s Centre after the cubby house was brought into the grounds. Douglas Brooks was the Men’s Shed member who supplied the cubby house initially. “My son and I put it together for his family to use years ago, his kids were finished with it and he said what should I do with it, I said give it to me and I’ll take it to the Men’s Shed,” said Douglas.

“A few of the slats on it were broken and we gave it a new paint job. It took about two months to get it all good again, as we only work one day a week. It’s wonderful seeing the kids so excited, now it’s going to another generation of children.” Early Childhood Teacher, Kate Tabbernor said, “We were only too happy to take the cubby off their hands. It’s great to have things like this, especially when it’s been repurposed and done up like it has. It has already been put to good use and given a second life. The kids were especially excited to see it on the back of the trailer getting brought in. Kate mentioned the Centre had a cubby house previously though it had become

quite run down and didn’t sport half of the fun gadgets this one has, including a doorbell, stove, sink and flowerbed. “The kids especially love the doorbell, I think that is going to get quite a workout,” Kate laughed, “It’s great for them to get outside and use their imaginations.” “We can’t thank the Borenore/Nashdale Men’s Shed enough, they do a lot of work within the community and our centres, so we are extremely grateful to them.” Borenore/Nashdale Men’s Shed member Max Davidson added, “Seeing the attitude of the kids with it, it makes it all worthwhile.. and yes, that doorbell battery might need replacing fairly often.”

Roger It was on Roger Burrell’s very first trip to Orange, three years ago, that he decided he would move here one day, although that came about sooner than he and his family imagined. Born and raised in country Vitoria, Roger has had a diverse career. After studying economics and accounting at university in Melbourne (while also serving as an army reservist), he built a successful business for himself selling audio-visual and conferencing equipment. “I had a house paid off and I just

thought I’d take some time to explore life. So, at 29, I closed up the business and then for about ten years I worked on and off for and travelled a lot! “I’d do any job; I read water metres in Sydney, so I’ve literally I’ve walked Parramatta Road and the whole North Shore. I then got into web design, digital marketing, I’ve worked in real estate, and renewable energy work — sizing systems for solar hot water and solar power, then as a business development manager, sales manager for a company.” Since moving to Orange, Roger’s taken

on cellar door work and spent the last five months as a vintage Cellar hand. He has now returned to real estate, accepting a role with One Agency. “I’m not going anywhere; this is home. I’m working in an industry, which I love. It doesn’t feel like I’m working. I get to get up in the morning and help people. “I practice yoga and meditation regularly and I like to bring that philosophy into everything I do — observing and being in the moment, being present. I’m at the age now where that is what’s important to me.”

My wife and I hosted family from Dubbo last weekend and one of the things we did with them was visit the Museum in the visitor’s centre. I had heard about some exhibition that was on there and told it was worth seeing. Before I go any further I need to confess that the last time I went to the Museum I was pretty disappointed, I’d seen the Dubbo Museum and was hoping ours would be just as impressive, one that visitors would flock to and thoroughly enjoy. I felt our Museum lacked that wow factor and for me, it took about 5 minutes to see anything that interested me. I felt it needed “something” more, something like a collection of photos to add to the visual enjoyment. I’m sure you’ve getting the idea of what I thought of it. Well, come last Sunday. What a refreshing and gobsmacking turnabout it was! From the moment I put my head through the door, I couldn’t believe what was confronting me. The “Museum” as I had last seen it wasn’t there and in its place was a beautifully presented photographic exhibition called “all in a day’s work”. It’s amazing! At this point, I won’t say too much more about what’s there but let me whole-heartedly encourage everyone to go along and see this exhibition for yourself. It’s on show until October. The important thing that I want to say is credit where credit’s due and to all those who played a part in this exhibition, a

very well done! More than that though, while I was there, I took the time to have a look around the Visitor’s Centre itself, again the last time I looked I was hardly impressed. Please keep in mind that I look at things like this from a practical point of view, not a creative perspective. I’m more interested in what something will achieve rather that how creative it may look. Last time I took any notice, I felt our Visitor’s Centre was all pretty but not very practical. That’s changed. Maybe it was still in the evolving stage but what I saw on Sunday was very impressive and very practical. I loved it! I have no problem whatsoever eating humble pie when I’m wrong, and on this my attitude has been wrong for quite some time. It does show something however and I think those in power should consider this. I’ve been floating along with an impression in my head that has obviously changed dramatically since I last took notice. What’s worse, I own a local community magazine, so you’d think I’d know everything that was going on in Orange. I didn’t know this. Maybe I missed the publicity or if I saw it, it didn’t sink in. Either way, I hope this helps get the word out about the great things that are happening at our Museum and Visitor’s Centre and heaps of people drop in to see, experience and share what’s happening there with others. It’s a good news story, let’s capitalise on it by spreading the word!

Orange City Life doesn’t generally involve itself with local infrastructure issues but a couple of things that happened last week has prompted me to say something.

live up near the Racecourse and on Tuesday/Wednesday last week I noticed a team of workman put in a pedestrian refuge on Woodward Street near Gardner’s Road. They built the whole thing in about two days. I couldn’t for the life of me understand why they would put one there. Before I could fully come to grips with the wisdom of that, the refuge was ripped out again the very next day! I have no idea what caused that but obviously something went terribly wrong and a lot of ratepayers’ money has been wasted. Hot on the heels of that, I took a call from a concerned reader on Thursday afternoon about another road matter. She lives near Forest Road and

was very concerned that there is no decent footpath along Forest Road between the railway footbridge and the hospital. She regularly observes people in mobile scooters or prams trying to negotiate the walk along that section. She was hoping I could help her get some action, she had previously raised it with a local Councillor whose response was “we’re getting to it.” With these two incidents floating around my head and remembering another friend telling me that it took Council 6 months to respond to a letter he had sent them about another issue, I thought, geez, maybe I should do something. I did! I drove out with my camera, had a look at what the reader was talking about, discovered her

In a one-story pink house, there was a pink person, a pink cat, a pink fish, a pink computer, a pink chair, a pink table, a pink telephone, a pink shower– everything was pink! What color were the stairs? A: There weren’t any stairs; it was a one story house!

concerns were valid and as a result took some photos to share with other readers. It is a dog’s breakfast on both sides of the road with sections of concrete paths, dirt tracks, grass, bitumen, bumps and more. It’s hard to believe that such an important road doesn’t have a decent walking path along it, and especially when it leads to the Hospital. My photos add weight to what I’m saying. These were taken on both sides of Forest Road not far from the shop there, they give an indication to the mix of surfaces users are faced with. So, that’s OC Life’s contribution, now it’s up to you, the public, to lobby Council if you want to see something done with this section of road.

My fantastic EUROPE ADVENTURE CONTRIBUTED BY PIP MANNIX

Pip Mannix has just returned from her three-week tour with the Australian Under 17 All Schools Hockey Team of Europe. She wrote this piece to say thanks and share some of her experience with the community. Tournament. We had two warm up games against Germany interspersed with a trip to Heidelberg castle which is more than 800 years old. “The Tournament was three days of fantastic hockey between Australia, the Netherlands, Germany and Ireland with the Aussie boys winning the gold and girls the bronze. The Dutch and German girls were too good for us on the day, but we certainly learnt how they like to play the game and made some great new friends. Considering that the other teams had been training regularly this year, the Germans twice a week, and we only just met each other in Singapore the week before, we were very happy with how we played.” It was a fantastic experience and I’d like to thank everyone who helped make it possible for me to go on such an awesome trip. A special shout out to my coaches Mrs Georgiou and Pete Shae and my ever-supportive parents, thank you.” Congratulations Pip! What an adventure, we look forward to your next accomplishment in the hockey world.

Flanders Field museum, an evening service and wreath laying ceremony at Menin Gate memorial Ypres, the Sir John Monash museum – it was a very emotional couple of days that made us all feel very proud to be Australian and very grateful for our way of life and the things we take for granted.” “We then drove to Amiens, France, where we played our first international game against the French U18 teams, the boys drew one all and the Aussie girls won six - nil. It was an awesome feeling lined up on the field singing the national anthem for the first time.” “Next stop Strasburg, the history in these cities and the architecture is amazing, something that really needs to be seen, you cannot describe it.” “We had another very emotional day with a visit to Natzweiler-Struthof Concentration Camp which mainly held political deportees and resistance fighters and is well known for the experiments that were carried out there on the inmates, seeing the buildings and reading the stories was horrifying.” “Off then to Mannheim for the 4 Nations Whitsun

“How fantastic it is to be able to travel overseas because of the sport you love. At the end of May we flew out of our respective States and met in Singapore to travel as a team to the Netherlands and begin our European tour as the Australian U17 All Schools Hockey teams. We spent four days in Haarlem where we went to the Anne Frank House, on a canal cruise and played two games against two club teams. The hockey facilities at these clubs were amazing and it was a surreal feeling to be in a country where hockey is the number one national sport and nearly everyone plays or has played the game.” “We were extremely lucky to get in a training session with Alyson Annan, an Australian hockey player who in 1999, was named the best women’s player in the world and now coaches the Netherlands women’s team, who are ranked number one in the world.” “We then headed to Belgium to watch a hockey Pro League game, Belgium V Great Britain, the atmosphere was awesome. We visited a number of WW1 memorial sites – Tyne Cot, Polygon Woods,

A lot of history and inspiration can be found hidden inside your Dads old sketch books, just ask 20-year-old, Caitlyn Bollinger. “My Dad brought Art into my life at a very young age. One of the earliest memories

I have is my Dad gifting me his old sketch books to finish, seeing what he did when he was in high school, it showed me that I could do it too. He also always had a camera around, and I always wanted to ‘do what Dad did’, I was gifted a 35mm camera from my Grandad and I fell in love with being able to capture pieces of life and then being able to look back at them, and see how things have changed or stayed that same.” From drawing surroundings to drawing in her school books, Caitlyn’s art has grown to what it is today through complete passion

and determination. “I started studying Art closer in high school and teachers would tell me that I had a talent for it, so I decided I’m going to go for it and this is what I’m going to try and do with my life, next year I hope to study Art History, Art Curatorship and Visual Arts at ANU in Canberra and see where life takes me after that.” “The ultimate dream is to be a fulltime Artist, but I’d love to also work in an Art Gallery, a Regional one or even a City one, it doesn’t bother me, I just want to be within art.”

“What I really love is all kinds of people create it, and you get to see all different stories come to life, it’s a very inclusive area and everyone is welcome. My favourite kind of art to do is my mixed media stuff, though my dog portraits are quite popular, I’m inspired by contemporary art in particular.” “Most of my friends aren’t too into art so they tell me the things I do are quite different. Kerry chalks up 50 years at Coles BY MELISE COLEMAN

f you’ve shopped at Coles during your lifetime, you’d know the familiar, smiling and beautiful soul that is Kerry Foster. I can attest to that statement, because, well, I wrote it, and I used to work with Kerry. If your morning at work started with a “Morning Darl” and a smile, it was a good day. This week Kerry is celebrating the amazing milestone of working at Coles for 50 years! “1969, I still remember my first day, I walked in and this bloke said to me, ‘Well you could of saved me a phone call and come 10 minutes earlier, I’ll put you on but you’ll only last a week.’ That was the same year man walked on the moon.” Kerry has worked in many sections of Coles over the years, with 43 years’ experience in the ‘Meat room’ alone, she also tried her hand in Deli, Bakehouse, Point Of Sale and now the Checkouts. “I’ve been there ever since, it’s my favourite and it’s simply because of the communication with customers.” “99% are lovely customers, you get to know them, you hear their highs and their lows, you see them when they are little kids and now, they have kids of their own. The unique people that I work with also

make each day great. I value each friendship I’ve made over the years within the business. Some of the old managers I’ve had I still get along with, I still catch up with old friends who used to work here, they are just wonderful people.” Over the 50 years you can guess there have been many changes to business and sales as a whole. “Technology would have to be the biggest change within the business over the years, when I started everything was hand done, now, even the meat room does very little by hand. The trucks had to be unloaded by hand, one by one, now they come in on a pallet and you use a forklift, at the checkouts keys were to be pressed one at a time, you had to stamp the tins and everything there by hand - everything was by hand. Also the trading hours, we used to close at 12pm on Saturday and the shop wouldn’t open again until Monday morning, back then you had more time with your family. Now it’s full steam ahead, seven days a week, early morning and late nights.” Not only does Kerry work 40 hours a week at Coles, somehow, she finds time to actively volunteer at different organisations including as a Wayfinder at the Orange Health Service, and a member within ‘Friends Assisting the Community’. “I work three hours out at the

hospital of a weekend as a volunteer Wayfinder and one day a month up at the Park Guildry.” How does Kerry find the time to volunteer while working full time? “You make time, it’s a bit of a rest and it’s amazing how many of our customers you see out there.” “It was just a bit of a way to give back, and because we’ve got the group and all of the money went to the hospital it just seemed like the right thing to do.” Kerry explained that one of her favourite memories from the 50 years was recently when her co-workers threw her a well-deserved party in the tea-room with the walls covered in A4 sheets of congratulatory messages. “They made such a fuss, it was really lovely, we had a beautiful spread of morning tea, and I was given my gold badge, as well as taken out for breakfast by some of the Managers. It doesn’t feel like I’ve been here for 50 years, it becomes a habit, you get up and go to work every morning, you don’t really think about it.” “I’m very proud to work in an Australian owned company that does so much behind the scenes whether it be for charity or for our farmers.. that’s what makes me feel proud, and, knowing the people I know, because of Coles.” Congratulations Kerry, an amazing achievement, you deserve every bit of the current ‘fuss’.

SHARING A LOVE OF LIVE MUSIC BY JONATHAN ROE

“I love music, music is what gets me up in the morning,” says PCYC guitar teacher Adrian Hadson, better known as ‘Ado’. Ado has been sharing his love of music by teaching guitar at the PCYC for the past 15 years, but recently, along with fellow teachers and bandmates Mark Walsh and Richard Smith he’s been helping his students get out of the classroom and get real stage time. Ado, Mark and Richard make up the rock trio Nocturnal. Lately, they’ve been inviting their young pupils from the PCYC band program to join them live on stage at local pub gigs. “When we’re doing gigs here in Orange, at the Vic for example, we’ve been getting kids performing, getting the students to 12

come and play — one of Mark’s students playing the drums or one of mine playing the guitar. I reckon it’s invaluable experience because we’re getting them out into the real world,” said Ado, who has himself been performing since he was 18 years old. “I always thought that if I started that at a younger age, I would have benefited from it,” he said “So that’s why we try and get them started as early as we can, especially when we see kids that are keen to pursue music, then we get them performing just like we do, playing real music in front of a real audience just like we have to. The young band Ado mentors, Blindly Led Youth, even supported them at a

recent gig, surprising punters with their talents. Mark Walsh, who’s also a committee member of local music body JAM Orange, said giving young musicians live gig experience it is something they are hoping to see more of in the future. “Typically, at the moment, the only opportunity for these kids to play is at the schools, the Con, but we want to get them into places that the general public are going to mill around and come across these performances,” he said. “You can see footage up on the Nocturnal Facebook page of some of the rowdy reaction the kids are getting… it is something that spurs people on to continue playing and enjoying

music. I was performing at a young age and I think that is what has kept me performing, because I got to perform young and the public gave me that positive encouragement. “So that is what this is about, we all feel the same way about sharing that love with our students and giving them that opportunity.” For Matilda Taylor, 13, the talented young drummer, vocalist and occasional guitarist for Blindly Led Youth, the opportunity has been eye-opening. “It was a lot of fun,” said Matilda. “We were all a bit nervous, but we supported each other and said we’ll be fine if we make a mistake — It’s our first gig! But it was really fun and I want to do it a lot!”

BOBBIES GOING ONLINE TO TAP CONNECTED CUSTOMERS

etail has been Melissa (Mel) Gregory’s life for nearly three decades building her “Bobbies Clothing” brand for 27 years. But how do local bricks-andmortar retailers thrive against online international giants like Amazon, eBay and Alibaba? Main Street Australia will survive, Mel believes, by learning to adapt, joining the online shopping revolution and offering something the industry Goliaths cannot; the personal touch. Taking on the behemoths, Mel and Bobbies are soon to launch their own online shopping site at: www.bobbiesonline.com.au, which will carry the vast majority of the name brands they feature in their Summer Street outlet. “I love it, I really do!” Mel said of the genuine enjoyment she gets from her work every day. “It’s being able to resolve customers’ needs. They come in with a problem, and we help solve it,” she explained. Mel believes that the business philosophy of “constant and never ending improvement” (CANI) and the ability to have an agile business model are the secrets to success in retail. “You’ve got to strive for excellence, that doesn’t mean being a perfectionist, but delivering a service as good as you can each

day,” she said. “Retail is about detail. It’s the little things that make a difference. We’re constantly assessing the store to see how we can improve… how we can add value and improve delivery,” Mel added. So you don’t want a complete change to the style and feel of the store every time a customer returns for the mid-market specialist brand-name clothing Bobbies has always specialised in. “We don’t want them to walk in and get a shock, but we need to keep it fresh enough to keep it exciting,” she explained. But, Mel says, the changes wrought by the explosion of online shopping to small businesses in regional cities like Orange, cannot be ignored. “The industry is way more challenging now than when I first started,” she said. “I think the retail industry has been totally disrupted with the onset of online shopping, but just like any industry, it is a challenge to compete.” “Online shopping isn’t new. We have to take the view, ‘this has happened, how do we adapt and evolve?” Mel and her team are currently in the process of developing a new website, “We’re developing an e-commerce store at the moment with a local web developer, which is proving to be a lot of work.”

But Mel believes that it will be the aesthetic impact of the new site, grabbing online customers’ attention immediately, that will be the proof of the pudding. “For our market, the site has to look exciting and appealing. It must have good functionality and be engaging.” Orders will be received online with all packaging, mailing, stock-taking, and ordering to be carried out in-house. “It will all be integrated when we go online. We’re going to run it all from our upstairs warehouse and office,” Mel said. Ideally, she envisions a future where up to 30 percent of her sales are online with the store still the masthead of the business for local customers seeking the personal service that Bobbies Clothing has always emphasised. “I’m looking at it as another doorway,” she concluded.

The One Percenters Growth and Decay – Maths has a lot to do with life you know. Rattling off one-liners and clichés in the middle of the sporting seasons is easy … “Go the extra mile”, “It’s not about the size of the dog in the fight”, “win the little battles”, “the onepercenters make all the difference”, “don’t leave anything in the tank”. I could go on. Two of my favourite sayings are that one about going the extra mile and the one that says “get out of your comfort zone”. If that means doing just one more thing when you think you can’t go any harder, then the box is ticked. If that means doing one more sit-up when your training schedule has finished, or one more practice question when it’s maths homework time, or maybe even digging out a few more weeds when it’s clearly beer o’clock – that’s the extra mile, the one percent. But something about the one percent thing in another context got me thinking recently, and I couldn’t get it out of my head. I was eating a packet of chips a little while ago, and on the side of the packet it said “99% fat free”. OK, but it doesn’t take an Einstein to do the math on that – they aren’t fat free, there’s fat in them. Actually, there’s one percent fat in them. There’s lots of things that are fat free, but these tasty morsels are not. That’s almost like one of those bad clichés, “near enough is good enough”. No, near enough isn’t good enough. If they’re not fat free, then they should be allowed to ride on the coattails of it. That’s the same with the soaps, cleaners and air fresheners. You know the ones. The ads spruik the claim “Kills 99.9% of germs”. I’m going to get a little bit technical now, but firstly, 99.9% isn’t 100%. When it comes to germs, it’s not even close. If all the germs aren’t dead, then obviously there’s still germs left

breeding. Germs and bacteria multiply at an exponential rate. Think of germs like a mouse plague. 2 becomes 4, 4 becomes 8, 8 becomes 16, then 32, 64, 128 256, 512, 1024, 2048 … a gazillion little mouses before too long. So, even if the anti-bacterial spray kills almost all of the germs, it didn’t kill all of them, and that small number of germs will become an astronomically large number again in a very short amount of time. When it comes to germs, killing ‘nearly’ all of them isn’t good enough. A classic case of the one-percenters not helping. Imagine for just a sec that everyone in the world made a commitment to

Wow, one percent, what a difference... give just one percent extra tomorrow in everything they did. We’re all out of bed one percent earlier (that’s 14 minutes earlier), we’re one percent kinder, one percent more generous, one percent better with our carbon footprint, one percent less on social media (yep, just 14 minutes again), one percent sharper in our eye for detail and one percent more organised. Wow, one percent, what a difference the 7 billion of us would make! Even if you didn’t follow the exponential growth thing in the paragraph above, I’m sure you get the gist of it. Let’s be another one percent better next week, double it the week after and so on. Now, normally this column is (supposed to be) 600 words, but I reckon I can ‘go the extra mile’ this week, waxing lyrical to churn out a few extra pearls. One percent extra on 600 words is 6 more words. There, made it. Only just.

OCLife “Every shop you go into, you see parents chastise their kids — Don’t touch! Shush! Wait a minute! — every shop you walk into, that’s what you do as a parent or grandparent because you don’t want them to touch stuff or break anything,” said Kelly Ward, who decided to do things a little different when she took over the iconic Coronet Milk Bar in Summer Street three years ago. “I decided this needed to be child friendly and child safe, so this shop belongs to the children of Orange and I yell at grandparents and I yell at parents, but no child is yelled at and they are not told they can’t touch —sure, my glass is never clean, but that’s what kids do!” Dating back to the 1940s, the Coronet Milk Bar is a link back in time. The original counter is still pride of place in store and they still make the chocolate topping in house as it has been done for decade. In the city and in so many country towns the milk bar has become a thing of the past, but Kelly and her son Riley are determined to see the Coronet flourish and be enjoyed by the next generation of Orange kids. “I love the place! I’ve been coming here since I was a kid, it has been going such a long time and I just didn’t want to see us lose it,” said Kelly. “You can’t buy what it gives. I’ve had a grandfather, father and grandson all lined up at that milk bar with the grandfather telling

and their father picks them up is here to have a milkshake because that it something they’ve always done together at the Coronet.” In pride of place of the shop wall, Kelly has a board full of clippings celebrating the achievements of kids who frequent

the Coronet. “Our Coronet ‘Wall of Fame’ — these are my kids,” said Kelly, with genuine pride. “So, if they make the paper for dance or anything and I spot them I put them up on the wall, because then they come in here and see themselves and I’ve had kids bring friends in here and say, ‘Look, I made the wall!’” For Kelly, the children who frequent her store come first. More than just running a business, she has made the Coronet a little safe haven and friendly space where kids know they will be welcome. “I have a huge amount of kids that I see three to four times a week — I see my grandkids less than that — so I’m very attached to all these children,” she said. “We really wanted to make this child safe, and that is the way we run it. Kids can come in and ask us for help, I get kids from the skate park needing a band-aid or a bit of a fix up, I get kids that have been bullied down town and come up here and if they are not ready to get back into the world I can call the parents and they can come and get them and I’ll keep them here until they do. “The kids know our staff and they feel comfortable in here. They can just come in, they don’t have to have money, it is just a safe space. So, if they want to come in here and do a bit of homework or hang out for the afternoon, it’s OK.”

he most talked about Football game this side of the mountains is on again.. that’s right! The old boys are ironing their socks and stretching their hammies ready for the big game of 2019. On Sunday, July 7, be sure to grab your family, friends, maybe even a camera (the blokes like to say one with a wide angled lens) and pop out to Spring Hill Recreational Ground for a great day of watching ‘the oldies’ play rugby union. If that isn’t enticing enough, the boys don’t just do this for their own and our amusement, they will be raising money and all proceeds from the day are going to ‘Give me 5 for Kids’. This is the third year Spring Hill have hosted the charity match and everyone involved hopes to keep it ongoing, the dedication is evident, after last year the boys played in the snow. Depending on who turns up on the day players will come from Emulators, Bathurst Old Bulls, Spring Hill Wood Ducks. The age group is from 35 years -100 years, anyone is most welcome to come and play even if you’ve never played before. Organisers are also hoping

to have a women’s game played before the oldies take the field. Emulator, Clive Walker said, “Everything is donated on the day, the meat, bread and raffle prizes, we are very thankful for that. Since we started this charity game we have raised over $12,000, we are very proud of that.” “Last year the boys realized it can be quite a bit of fun as long as you can walk afterwards, it’s always played at a fairly fast pace,” Clive laughed. Throughout the day there will be raffles and auctions to get involved with, and remember, it’s all going to a great cause. Barry Winnell added, “It’s traditional to have a glass of Port before you start and one at the end of the game, you don’t have yellow cards, but you do have, what we call a ‘Port Penalty’.” The winners from the day will have bragging rights and win the Wood Duck Trophy - what a prize! A bus donated by Cook’s Bus Service will be leaving the Orange Emus ground at 11 o’clock for anyone who wants to head out for the day. Gates open at 12pm, the game kicks off at 1pm and a gold coin donation is required for entry. We will see you there!

cots All Saints College today officially announced it will be expanding its private college bus service to transport current and new students travelling from Orange and the surrounding region to its two Bathurst campuses – All Saints Campus (Junior and Middle School – K-8) and Scots Campus (Senior School 9-12). At the official launch of the new bus service today in the Orange CBD, Head of College, Mr John Weeks was joined by representatives from the Senior Academic Team, parents and students to welcome the more direct transport link. As a result, the new bus service will provide greater access for students to attend the new regional College of all-round excellence - Scots All Saints College, recently formed in 2019 by the merger of All Saints’ College Bathurst (18742018) and The Scots School Bathurst (19462018). Starting his new role on 1 July, Head of College, Mr John Weeks said the decision was a result of popular demand and interest from families across the region seeking a more affordable, family-focussed and community-minded learning environment in the Central West.

“Our experience shows families and students are seeking schools with a top reputation, top academic results, diverse co-curricular opportunities and a supportive community learning environment to develop young people of purpose who seek to excel in all of their endeavours. These students will be able to take advantage of the new service from the start of Term 3. As a growing region with many new families relocating to Bathurst and Orange, it is important to provide a more affordable, independent education option, now with easier access. It was a girls only affair at Sir Jack Brabham oval last Thursday, with primary school girls from Orange and surrounding towns enjoying a little friendly competition on the soccer field. The girls gala day was organised by the Orange Football Association as part of a push to see more women get involved in the sport. More publicity and events will follow over coming months. “We have a lot of girls that play in our competitions, but you tend to see them drop off in the teenage years,” said Orange Football Association administrator, Brad Hazzard. 20

“It could be such a growth area and it is something we need to do more of in Orange. So we decided to start with the young ones and build up from there… The whole idea is to build on what the Matildas are doing for the sport as well, so we decided to run it while the World Cup was on and try and build on that good will and hopefully get more girls involved and build them into football players.” The Orange Football Association is looking to start summer football at the end of this year to continue building a local women’s competition.

He was joined for the celebration by approximately 50 family and close friends, including those that travelled from Dubbo and Sydney for the occasion. Don is the proud father of 3 children, grandfather of 8 grandchildren and great grandfather of 19 great grandchildren. Don was born in Orange to parents that migrated to Australia in1928 from Scotland. He worked at Email for 20 years.

ow into its 11th show, the Sunday Sessions at the Canowindra Bowling Club have seen some amazing regional musical talent come through the doors. For small beginnings to a now well-established monthly event, the crowds have been coming in droves support the region’s musicians. This July, the Sunday Sessions are proud to be presenting local Canowindra musician Oli Statham. Oli will be bringing a few fellow ‘music friends ’on the stage with him — the first full band performance for a Sunday Sessions gig. “I usually play solo, but love getting up with others at times, fusing various elements of the dynamic spectrum,” said Oli. “I play my takes on songs by Australian and international artists, styles ranging from folk, rock to soul to indie and alternative.... semi-popular contemporary from the 70’s to today is how I’d describe it. Of course, I have a few of the chart busters in there just in case you haven’t heard them the first billion times!” A regular visitor to the Sunday Sessions, Oli is a keen supporter of live, local music. “Over the last 10 months I’ve

kicked back and taken in half a dozen sets at the Bowlo on Sundays, Pioneer brew in hand. They’re usually brimming with local music and are a bit of a hub for musos too,” he said. When asked about his musical influences and his journey as a musician he said it all started with Pink Floyd and Toto blaring through the family sound system as a kid. “I don’t play Toto, but the former certainly influenced my musical pallet. The Chilli Peppers albums from the early to mid 90’s inspired me a lot, too,” said Oli. “These days I can get into anything where the muso is putting their back into it. I had classical piano lessons as a kid, though I wasn’t much good at reading music... I usually memorised the notes and made my teacher think I was reading!” The Sunday Sessions at The Bowlo return to the Canowindra Community Bowls & Recreation Club on Sunday 7 July, from 3pm. OCLife frightened you’re going to be in a lot of trouble.’ I was never, ever frightened when I was in the army, they always told me I was mad.

BE HONEST FOR A START, I’VE ALWAYS BEEN TRUTHFUL...

Before I was in charge of maintenance of the ducks (a steel boat with four wheels on it, with a propeller out the back, driven with the propeller in the water), I knew of a fella drowning, the other three blokes on it who walked around for three weeks like their arms were sacks, they had no skin after being in the water for 30 hours and the only things they had to hold on to were biscuit tins. It chaffed all the front of their bodies. I then took over the maintenance, if something went wrong, I had to rectify it no matter where it was. We used to take food up to the fellas on the front line and we dropped the food off and about half way back I said I can’t see the other duck, (it was a pretty rough day for us in the ocean, they weren’t made to be in the ocean they were made for rivers).

Being a good Father, the things I bought for my kids, I bought boats and took them water skiing, I’ve had swimming pools in the backyard for them, all sorts of thingsmotorcars! There was no end. *laughs* What did you get up to when you were young? I used to love flying a kite, no matter what was going in Orange, we had a paddock alongside the house, and we started mini golf in there and then after that we had a ten-pin bowling alley there. *laughs* The people that used to walk past from the woollen mills used to stand there for hours watching us play. Who is the person who influenced your life the most? Why? My wife Lorraine, she was lovely. When I came out of the army and there were shortages of men. The lady who used to organise the dances, would find partners for the ladies, and I got organised to go with Lorraine’s sister, I danced with her at the old Australia Theatre and at the end of the night, I thought to myself, the decent thing is to walk her home, Lorraine joined us, I got introduced to her, she was more my age and that was that.

We can’t go anywhere without the Jeep!’ he said, ‘It’s going to blow up’ and I said, ‘It’s not going to blow up it’s been here for quite some time.’ I eventually coaxed him back and we ended up lifting the Jeep up where it was over the bomb. Bowling has long been a favourite pastime in Orange, with a men’s club in Robertson Park dating back to the late 19th century. Musical Fundraiser... Isaak Sewak and Maddalena Cunial Stone have the opportunity to represent Australia in their respective skills, Isaac in Dragon Boating, Maddalena in Scouting, but they need help to raise the funds needed to get them there. THUMBS UP to the pedestrian passing the town fuel seller for alerting all to an irresponsible and or ignorant town fuel seller that compromised the safety of customers and pedestrians by allowing a woman to fill multiple cans in the back of her ute rather than minimising chanced ignition of fuel from static electricity by placement of cans onto driveway before filling.

THUMBS UP for McArdles Cleaning. I used their new service to have the carpet and seats cleaned in my car before our first baby arrives. They did an amazing job of cleaning the 13 years of dust out of the upholstery and drying my car. The staff were so great to deal with I would recommend their services to anyone.

New owners, Chris and Julse re-opened the Lakeshore Café four months ago, creating a hub of delicious food and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere in such a beautiful setting. Catering to a wide variety of taste buds in their menu, including gluten free options, they offer favourites including; sticky date pudding, burgers with the lot, roast pumpkin and beetroot salad and whole food bowls just to name a few. Open for breakfast and lunch (with all day breakfast and eat in and takeaway options), Winter opening hours are from 7am-5pm and in Summer, Lakeshore Café will extend their opening hours to 6am-7pm.
