Someone remarked this week “Where has the year gone?” Given Christmas doesn’t feel that far gone, and the 30th June is just around the corner, it’s a fair question. We often get asked by readers about something in the magazine “a few weeks back”, only to discover that what they want appeared many months ago. For me, it must be an age thing.
Over the last few months we’ve been working on an Industry feature for OC Life. We had hoped to bring readers a showcase of local businesses to demonstrate just how many great industries we have here in Orange so that we might appreciate their achievements, and their contributions to local employment and our economy etc. Unfortunately, our timing for doing this may have been a bit off centre with many having other things on their minds for now. We have however, included a small feature in this issue which we hope will do part of the job we set out to do. Despite our effort, Orange still has an incredible range of industries big and small that we should all feel proud to have here. On that note, it’s worth taking a drive sometime around our industrial areas to see what’s there, you may be pleasantly surprised, we were!

hris Walker is on a mission to make the world a better place, one small act of kindness at a time. It was five years ago, here in Orange that Chris started his “Do a Good Deed Challenge” by handing out coffee vouchers to strangers on the street. He has since taken it to the United Kingdom and to his new home on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, all in an effort to spread a little bit of happiness in the world. “I created it because there was so much negativity out there. I saw what was happening and I thought people always talk about wanting to do something better, but no one does anything. The Do a Good Deed Challenge is about trying to be better people and take that opportunity to help a stranger out — it can have such a big impact,” said Chris. The Do a Good Deed Challenge, July 22-29 is not a fundraiser, but you certainly can raise money or give to charity if you choose. It is simply about taking a moment to do something kind for someone else.
BY JONATHAN ROE “The simplest things can have such a big impact, like holding the door for someone or asking if someone is OK. When I was in London, I used to buy flowers and give them to older people in the street, because the response that you get from that is just beautiful,” said Chris. “There are so many charities out there and it is really great that people give to them, but with good deeds there is no real limit to what you can do… and it is just a way that people can really do something themselves, rather than say, ‘all right, here’s some money for you to do that’. It is inspiring people to take the initiative!” For Chris, the motivation to grow his Do a Good Deed Challenge comes from knowing how much little acts of kindness have meant to him in his own life. “My dad left me when I was born and my mum has spina bifida, so I had to grow up pretty quick as a kid. My father leaving always gave me the feeling that there was no one there for me. I have suffered from depression, I have suffered from anxiety, there have been times where I was in a pretty dark place, but I was lucky enough that I had people around me who

supported me,” he said. “There have been times when I was walking down the street feeling pretty sad and I’ve had people come up to me and just say, hey are you OK? So, I think that is what motivates me.” For those up for the challenge, Chris encourages them to join his Do a Good Deed Challenge Facebook event page and share how they’ve made a difference no matter how small. “Post a photo, a video or comment on what you are doing. It is not about blowing your own horn and saying I’m the best human around, it is simply about creating awareness and inspiring people to be better humans,” said Chris. “It doesn’t take long to do a good deed and when people see what other people are doing it might inspire them and they will feel more inclined to get involved as well. “There is always something you could do! It is about taking five minutes to think about what you might enjoy if a stranger did it for you.”

In saying that, it’s given me some pretty good injuries over the years. I’ll never forget snapping my femur at school playing tackle footy, down the back with a flat basketball, and spending three months in hospital.

On my days off, when I find the time I enjoy listening to different podcasts having a read. I’m so proud of my kids and partnerthey are my life. I’m also super proud to have won the Dance for Cancer 2019 with the One Strength boys, it is without a doubt the best experience I’ve ever had! The amount of people that get behind and support your journey is
unbelievable and the people involved are one in a million. When it came to dance, well, not being able to dance, our dance school turned us into cheerleaders and made us look awesome, they were terrific. It’s easily a memory and experience I’ll never forget and I’m very grateful that I got to do it and who I got to do it with.”
Last Tuesday week I did something I would not normally do, I watched the Council meeting live online. I was interested to see where things went with the Robertson Park toilet issue but sadly that got held over again after not a lot of discussion. Watching the discussion, I doubt they’ll ever land that plane. Before councillors got to that they discussed a number of other issues at some length and one of them caught my attention, the BMX track. After quite a deal of discussion Council resolved to close the facility and consider other uses for the site, and to look at removing the soil. I’ll be honest, I had never even looked at the BMX track but after listening to the discussion, I think their decision made good sense. Next day I started thinking about that space and decided to go and have a look at what it actually was, I wondered whether the Super Playground idea that we’ve floated before in OC Life mightn’t be a possibility. Well bingo! It’s a big parcel of land behind the PCYC and yes there are some big piles of dirt but from my point of view, opportunity knocks for us to consider it as a site for a Super Playground. Orange could desperately use another family attraction of this type, especially after losing the pool at the Club. The BMX site would appear to be perfect in size, location etc. I’m also mindful that the art gallery has recently been granted over 4 million to extend the gallery. To my
mind, I can’t help feeling that that sort of money spent on something a greater number of the community would benefit from would be a better use of $4 million dollars in Orange right now. I won’t dwell on the idea of a Super Playground, but I do sincerely hope the idea gets a decent hearing from the community and our Council, I think it would do wonders for Orange on a number of fronts and bring endless entertainment for families. Whatever happens, I hope our Council will very quickly decide on an alternate use for this very attractive piece of land that is currently the BMX track. Apart from that and having also heard the discussion at the Council meeting on re-visiting the pool issue with the Club, the BMX track site could also be considered as an option for a second pool facility. Again, the location and space would seem ideal. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. If I’m any judge, I believe our community needs a project to come out of our Council that we can all get excited about. I felt the Council meeting that I watched lacked any real enthusiasm or vibrance and certainly nothing exciting was discussed. If that’s how they are all the time, no wonder there’s a feeling that Orange is at best marking time and at worst going backwards in areas where we could do so much better. Opportunities knock everywhere, but only if we decide to take them up.

ast week 14 students from Canobolas High School received an insight into a what a career in rural health is like, participating in the Health Career Academy Program (HACP) run by University of Sydney School of Rural
Health. The students toured Dudley Private Hospital, as well as the Orange Aboriginal Medical Service (OAMS) before completing a clinical skills session at the School of Rural Health campus at Bloomfield. HCAP was developed to introduce secondary school students to health careers and encourage health career aspirations and attainment. The program has been designed for students to gain valuable insights into career opportunities, professional pathways, and locations of service delivery. University of Sydney School of Rural Health, Community Engagement Officer, Kathryn Nadan said, “It’s a program which has been operating in the far west for 10-12 years, and today was the pilot program for this area- it went really well. “It’s all about building aspirations towards health careers, it’s also about seating and growing our own local health professionals. It’s workforce development especially for regional and remote areas.” We caught up with 17-year-old Kimberly Kiel who is planning a career in the Rural Health Sector when she leaves school. “I’ve always had this passion for nursing so when I was given this opportunity through the Health Career Academy Program I was like oh my goodness let’s do this!

I’VE ALWAYS HAD THIS PASSION FOR NURSING... “Getting to walk through both Dudley Hospital and the Aboriginal Medical Centre, I really have this broad understanding of what pathways I can go through and how I can achieve these things. With the help of Katherine, she has also provided the education through which I can help the indigenous community as well.” “We were shown around the medical practices and demonstrated what processes they do to care for the community and what pathways you can go through to actually work in these careers. Its been really educational and amazing to learn. “Something that I learnt today was the sheer importance of being a part of the medical team in this area and how important it is to the community. I haven’t quite figured out exactly what I would like to do after school though paramedics or nursing is on the cards, I’m certain.”
A Tribute to a good bloke BY BOB HOLLAND
A
lf Manciagli is a well-known professional photographer and businessman in Orange. I’ve known him personally for about 10 years and although not close friends, I have come to appreciate him as being a good man, a great bloke and a proud supporter of anything that promotes Orange. Last week we all heard that he’d received an OAM in the latest Queens Honours Awards and I for one, couldn’t have felt more pleased. I can’t speak for others, and I’m sure there’s plenty of them, but I can speak for myself and our association over the last 10 years or so. Our relationship has been mainly along business lines but also one where we’ve openly and willingly helped each other where a greater good could be served. Each of us has resources or abilities that have the potential to help or entertain others in some way. In my case I have a popular magazine and skills in marketing and publishing in my bag of tricks, Alf on the other hand has incredible photography skills, along with his business savvy. During the last 10 years,
we have each been able to greatly assist each other personally and professionally, but mainly in the promotion of Orange and the area. For me, Alf has freely and generously provided me with unlimited access to his millions of classic photographs when I’ve needed them. Some readers may remember, among other things, the Christmas Cards we did some years back and more recently a Picture Postcard booklet, both feature Alf’s photography and both projects were all about promoting our beautiful Colour City near and far. Both these projects were highly successful, and both gave me great satisfaction, but they wouldn’t have been such successes without Alf’s brilliant photographs and his willingness to give me free access to them. For Alf, we have helped him promote and advertise some of his projects. First it was photographry classes several years back, more recently it was three books that featured hundreds of stunning photographs Alf had taken over a period of time from around the region. His books still sit proudly on our coffee table at home and visitors and friends still marvel at them when they browse through them. On Alf’s books, if you

haven’t already got one, I think a few copies are still available at the Orange Visitors Centre and Collins Booksellers if you’d like to see or buy them. They are timeless and make wonderful keepsakes or conversation starters. There’s a lot more I could say about Alf, but I’ve probably embarrassed him enough already, he’s not aware that I’ve written this. I haven’t seen Alf in a little while, I’m aware that his health hasn’t been as great as he would have hoped and that’s slowing him down somewhat. Despite this, I’m sure he’s still keeping himself busy, he’s that sort of bloke. Congratulations on your OAM Alf, in my book you thoroughly deserve it, and thanks for being such a wonderful friend and great Ambassador for Orange.

WHO DOESN’T WANT TO BE
aniel Freeman has family in Orange and he’s just written a book that his family here feel will interest people, no matter where they live. The book is titled Fit for Life. ‘Fit for Life’ is a culmination of years of on the ground work helping people first-hand and hearing the stories of people from all walks of life. The common approach to fitness simply doesn’t work for most people because it is focusing on the wrong things. In helping hundreds of clients lose kgs, get stronger and get in shape, coach Daniel Freeman found there was a lot more to building true fitness than the standard narrative. “Being in the fitness industry for many years I saw so many people struggling with their fitness. There are so many quick fixes around and the majority of the fitness world pushes people to do things that are not sustainable and leads them to a lifelong problem of ‘yo-yo dieting’. Blayney Public finding their SPARKE
T
he entire school community at Blayney Public are busy creating, directing and producing their own short films, getting ready for their in-school film night .. of the SPARKE Learning Network, which will then be premiered at the SPARKE film fest, set to launch in October. The SPARKE learning network incorporates local schools working together to share knowledge, ideas and expertise. This year the learning network has been rebranded from the Pre2 network to become SPARKE. To make the difficult decision on what film Blayney Public School will send to the festival, the school are to organise their very own inhouse film night, inviting parents and friends to come along, sit back, relax, enjoy and vote for
BY MELISE COLEMAN their favourite, the top two films from the night will then be sent to premiere at the SPARKE film festival. Blayney Public Stage 2 Teacher, Claire Donlan said this was the first time the school has been involved in the network and students were enjoying every second of completing their projects. “Students are nearly finished their films which is quite exciting. We initially went back to basics and completed the script writing and story boarding, that took 4-5 weeks then we got into the filming aspect, students have been really great with their techniques and ideas, and they genuinely love coming in to work on their films.” The films need to incorporate the theme of SPARKE. Eight-year-old Grace Folpp explained her groups short film is about a blackout to
which their characters rummage for candles, creating a spark and some unexpected bad luck along the way, “We did lots of planning and we made films in our class so we were prepared. I enjoyed the filming part and making the scenes, we all share the roll of camera duties and we all have our own characters which is fun.” Harrison Brown added, “A little boy that comes up with an amazing idea, for our spark idea we did ‘sparktacular’ and that is due to all of the things that he creates, the audience will have to wait and find out! Sometimes time will go by really quickly and other times it takes 20 minutes just to film one thing. I’m really enjoying the experience though; I have never made a movie before- it’s amazing.” Goodluck to all!

GROUNDSWELL OF LOCALIST PASSION Put Orange First held a small business ideas forum in town recently, with The Park View Hotel kindly making a room available. It was fantastic to see around 45 like-minded local people gather to address some of the issues facing the Orange small business community and there was a clear call made to get stakeholders on the same page and unite for a common cause…. a strong Orange for all – thriving business, thriving community, thriving city! Local independent financial planner, Daniel McGregor, and manager of Jack Evans Camping and Workwear, Jack Evans, ran the forum. They initially presented some of the thoughts and ideas that Put Orange First has been working on in 2019 and then the floor was opened to the audience to have a say. There was plenty of passion in the room! Everyone loves living in Orange, it’s a great city… but it’s fair to say that many feel Orange could be doing better and plenty of ideas were put forward. Given the feelings and ideas that were expressed, it was fantastic to have the mayor, Reg Kidd, Councillor Tony Mileto, and the president and vice-president of the Business Chamber, Ash Brown and Shawn Dwyer, in attendance. As part of the forum, attendees were asked to complete a form which gave them the opportunity to raise issues, but also to propose potential solutions. Below is a summary of the key takeaways form the forum: There was also widespread support for getting some flags up in Summer Street as a simple means of livening up the CBD. It also sounds as though everyone is also hanging out the former Myer building reopening! A couple of interesting ideas worth mentioning were an Orange Artisan Hub and Orange Street Art Festival. The other key theme that came out of the forum was agreement that Orange can benefit from a form of ‘localist’ campaign where locals support locals, locals can be tourists in their own city and region and we promote everything great about Orange to not just the outside world, but to those who live here as well.

The Smells of Winter Everyone talks about the ‘smell’ when Spring comes, but what about the smells of winter? It’s taken its sweet time, but we can safely say that winter in the Central West is well and truly upon us. Cutting wood out in the forest in a t-shirt on the 8th of June had me believing that I wouldn’t be needing the wood I was collecting, and that the little cold snap we’d had the week before was just yanking my chain. But it’s here. The fire is pumping, and it won’t go out until September (maybe later). That smell of sawdust as the boxwood logs are cut on the forest floor into transportable pieces is one of my faves. We’ve also got an open fire in the formal loungeroom that gets a semi-regular run, especially on super-cold nights – that crackling sound and the background ‘burning’ perfume are as warming as the heat. With under 2 months until the City2Surf comes round again, runners across the Central West are braving the cold and amping up the training schedule for that legendary 14k stroll. I’m not much of a fan of running with a tummy full of food, so most of my miles are clocked up pre-breakfast. That means in June and July it’s bloody cold out there!! But you know what I mean when I say “there’s no air in the air” at that early time of day, and the smell of ‘nothing’ is absolutely magic. You almost have to suck twice before your lungs get a dose of oxygen. When the air is still and the stars are out on a cloudless morning/night in Orange, there’s really no better smell or sight to behold. The running
gods pay us pack when the second week in August comes around though - the high altitude work we’ve done and the bonus of 10 extra degrees of warm in Syd will see a cracking time logged. Thanks winter! Now, to my favourite bunch of smells in the entire universe. Winter meals. We always look ahead on the ‘Weatherzone’ App to check out what the week ahead has in store for us from the sky. If’ there’s a sign it’ll be a seriously cold and/or miserable day, that’s the cue to plan for a meal in the slow cooker. It takes two days to get it done, as the big slab of lamb or beef (in most cases for us) emerges from the deep freeze to defrost the day prior. Early morning, the veges are chopped, stock put in, and a few secret ingredients and tricks occur, depending on the dish. The meat is added, the lid goes on and the 9 hour timer is clicked to ‘go’. Oh man, I know what’s coming when I walk in the door after work at 5:30ish. It takes a few minutes on the drive home to Millthorpe to remember that the slow cooker went on at 7:30 that morning, then it’s a mighty effort to keep to the speed limit as the anticipation builds. Opening the back door … not disappointed. If heaven smells even half as good as this then put me down for it. I’m swept off my feet (can you remember how Pepe Le Pew used to get swept up in the perfume smell of the girl cat he had a crush on?) as the magnificent aroma from the kitchen appears to have permeated every crevice of our home. Paradise. Who needs summer? No matter if it’s lamb, beef, chicken, curry or even a vege masterpiece, it can be winter every day if it’s like this. And I didn’t even talk about my wife’s pumpkin soup! Sorry if your mouth is watering, I hope there’s something waiting for you tonight, too.

ombining forces, the concert will be a fundraiser for both Isaac Sewak and Maddalena Cunial Stone to help them with fees and costs of representing Australia in the coming months. Isaac Sewak will be representing Australia in the Team Auroras heading to Thailand in August for Dragon Boating from Pinnacle Dragon Boating Club. “This is my first time as part of the Junior Auroras, I’m really looking forward to racing.” Maddalena Cunial Stone is representing 2nd Orange Scouts at the World Scout Jamboree (WSJ), in West Virginia USA, this July. “I’ve been a part of scouts for almost four years and now I’ve moved up to the Ventures section, I’ve been preparing for this for about two years.” Scouts from all over the world will be there, up to 40,000 to give you a rough idea, so we will get to meet all different people from different cultures and get to really experience what it’s like to be there. Then we get to be involved in different adventure activities including zip line, rock climbing, ab sailing, BMX and all of that sort of stuff, with several inhouse competitions.” “I’m really looking forward to meeting new
people and being with my friends, they are the loveliest group of friends I’ve ever had.” Lisa Cunial added, I’ve been involved with both of these groups (Pinnacle Dragon Boating and 2nd Orange Scouts) and they are very community minded and a lot of fun to be a part of, so it’s nice to share this with them. We would really like to share live music with the Orange community.” “Musically, the Carpenters are interesting, they are a challenge to sing and play and that’s why we like it - it’s beautiful, timeless music.” Maddalena continued, “Most weekends I wake up to them playing and it’s really nice to lie there in bed and listen to them. We would be very thankful for people coming out to support us and help us to get there financially. It’s going to be a great night of food and music.” The concert will be held in the Dalton Room at Duntryleague Guest House Orange from 7:30pm for an 8pm start, all ages welcome. He has been tireless working behind the scenes, to make the track and the club better. Due to work commitments Anthony has had to step down as President, but he is unlikely to completely give up his connection to the sport and the club he loves. “I am passionate about the sport,� said Anthony. “The club and motocross venue have been a big part of my life, but I’ve loved it. On top of his committee duties Anthony also took out time to take on coaching duties as well as being a chief scrutineer, race secretary and race starter.
“Becoming a Coach made sense as I got to work with the junior riders helping them to learn the skills they needed to be safe and successful in the sport,� said Anthony. “At the time, there were no Coaches in Orange and it was the best way to get new people into the Club.� While Anthony does ride himself, it is when talking to him about the technicalities behind racing and track design that he really comes to life. “There is so much that happens behind the scenes – track irrigation, design, licencing, permits, safety, maintenance, and paperwork, there is a lot of that!� said Anthony, who has spent a lot of hands-on hours working to improve the local track. “I wanted to build a local track that increased the skills of our riders,� he said. “So, I spent a lot of time travelling around other tracks, looking for ideas and things that we could do to make our track better.�

Those improvements included almost doubling the track’s length, adding jumps, berms and corners. During his time Anthony also oversaw the hosting of two Junior State Title events, which saw over 140 riders and their families descend on Orange for two separate weekends of riding. Anthony’s commitment to his role also saw him plan holidays around the club’s schedule. “But I loved it. I loved the satisfaction of looking out and seeing how far the track had come and I am looking forward to seeing the great things the club will achieve in the future.� he said. “Overall, I am happy with what was achieved by the Club during the time I was President and Vice President. There are still a couple of things on the wish list, like nice canteen facilities and upgraded toilets, but we have a fantastic venue which I am immensely proud of.�

BEHIND THE NAMES To help readers further appreciate the valuable contribution our local industries make to our local community and economy, we browsed some of their websites to see what interesting information we could come up with to help us do that. Our search brought up several familiar names along with others we had never heard of. Here’s some highlights from what we discovered HORT ENTERPRISES Jeff Hort Engineering was incorporated in March 1995. The Business was set in Kenna Street Orange, New South Wales, with the aim of providing an engineering support service firstly into the rural industry and secondly into the then fledgling mining industry given that the proposed Cadia Mine was approved by government. On the 1st July 2014, Jeff Hort Engineering Pty Ltd as a business entity was rebadged to become Hort Enterprises Pty Ltd. This step reflects the maturity, the ownership and stewardship of business.
RON FINEMORE TRANSPORT Ron Finemore Transport was established by Ron Finemore AO in 2004, following his acquisition of Wodonga-based company Lewington’s Transport. In 2005, Smith’s Transport in Orange was also purchased, forming the foundation of the company today. Finemore’s Orange base was custom-built for $9 million, it has a fleet of more than 250 prime movers, and upwards of 500 pieces of trailing equipment, that travel over 50 million kilometres annually. Today more that 500 are employed by RFT.
ALMIGHTY INDUSTRIES Almighty Industries are a locally owned, family run company located in Orange NSW that commenced as a one-man operation in 2003. They are now their industries largest employer in Western NSW, employing more than 40 full time staff including tradespeople, apprentices and trainees. They specialise in providing truck, trailer and light commercial vehicle body solutions as well as commercial waste and vehicle lifting solutions.

repare yourself for the End of Financial Year sales onslaught. This time of year will see us all bombarded with all manner of “sales� and “opportunities� and many will be very tempting. At the top of the list for many will be buying a new car, and that gives me an opportunity to share some thoughts on where cars should sit when spending our money, and not just when an End of Year Sale is happening but as a general lifestyle practice. If you’re considering buying a car, here’s a few thoughts Second-hand cars are ideal if you can pick up something that is still under warranty, much cheaper than buying new. In saying that, new cars are relatively
cheap these days and come with the full warranty. Sometimes it can be worth paying that bit extra for a new car with the goal of driving it for a long time. Either way, my message to you is to buy less car than you can afford. Buying too much car can be the equivalent of throwing money down the drain. In fact, cars are said to be the second biggest destroyers of wealth, after divorce. Driving a flash, expensive car may help you look the part but for some people it can be the start of a financial disaster, particularly for younger people. They may look happy driving around in their new car with the ‘P’ plates on, but little do they realise just how much they have set back their financial future. If financed, it will likely take them years to repay the debt! That will put them years behind saving a deposit for a house, years

behind starting to invest, years behind adding extra to super and will most likely mean they end up having to work for years longer than needed or suffer a reduced lifestyle later in life. I guarantee you that most people you see driving expensive cars they’ve bought are spending all their income and not creating wealth. And for the record, I drive a very
inexpensive car‌ it’s a Skoda Octavia that I bought in 2016 for $25,000. White, plain, many would call it boring‌ beautiful car to drive! They included those visiting from Sydney and the Blue Mountains. The group of Retired Railway workers enjoy Lunch together twice a year , once in May then again in November. How I Get My Kicks with Jonathan Roe There are many reasons why people choose to train martial arts; for some it is the discipline and the satisfaction of acquiring new skills, for others it is for self-defence or simply a fun way to keep fit, but for amateur mixed martial artists Kristian Garlick and Alistair Fleming it’s a way of life. “I’ve been doing martial arts nearly since I could walk — a long time,� said 22-year-old Kristian. “Mum got me into Taekwondo years ago and ever since then I’ve been doing martial arts. I’ve done Karate, Jiu jitsu, MMA, Muay Thai, kickboxing, boxing, name a martial art and I’ve had a crack at it!� Kristian, who now has 13 fights on his record will be stepping into the cage again at a mixed martial arts event in Canberra next month. “It was a bit short notice, but I’m helping out a mate who’s going through some dramas with work and family stuff, so I thought I’d step in and cover for him and keep the card going in Canberra,� said Kristian, whose fight preparation schedule requires some serious dedication.

He now has a 3-3 fight record with two more fights coming up in the next few weeks. “I find it adds some colour, if you’re having a grey day if you are just being bored you can come out here train and something interesting will always happen,â€? he said. “Even if you are having a bad day with technique and everything isn’t working out well for you‌ It is just enjoyable and there is a significant camaraderie here at the gym, everyone is very open and always willing to talk – it’s great.’ But more than just fighting, Kristian said the gym environment and their teammates help bring out

Final call for Regional Vocal Scholarship APPLICATIONS CLOSE END JUNE
Vocally gifted students across regional Australia have until Friday 28 June to submit their applications and auditions online for Opera Australia’s Region al Vocal Scholarship. Students from year 11 and 12 who live 100km or further away from their nearest capital city centre are invited to apply for the vocal scholarship that could fast-track their opera or musical theatre career. The distance criteria does not apply to students who are from the Northern Territory or Tasmania. Earlier this year, Opera Australia announced its rebranded Regional Vocal Scholarship, formally known as the Regional Student Scholarship, which enables eligible students to undertake a brand new application process entirely online facilitated through Vimeo and YouTube. In order to apply, students will need to provide contact information, a letter of recomme ndation from a music or vocal teacher, and two links to audition videos singing an opera, classical or musical theatre piece via the Opera Australia online portal. Opera Australia’s Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini is determined to look beyond major cities in order to discover and mentor new young talent. “We are looking for passionate and highly talented singers across a variety of genres. If there are regional students out there who want to pursue and launch their career in the performing arts industry, we want to hear from them!” says Terracini. Once applications have been considered, four successful vocalists will receive the scholarsh ip prize of a week-long visit to Sydney in January 2020. The program aims to build on each recipient’s musical capability with access to exclusive workshops held by some of Australia’s leading industry experts, tickets to world-class performances at the Sydney Opera House, and the chance to perform for CEO Rory Jeffes, Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini, and Opera Australia guests. Opera Australia’s Regional Vocal Scholarship is an accessible way for talented senior students to further develop their journey into the music industry that they may have never been exposed to otherwise. Travel, accommodation and meal allowances will be provided for each successful scholarship recipient. REPORT FROM NEW WOMEN’S GROUP
The newly formed Central West Women’s Forum held its inaugural canape evening event on Saturday 15th June at Kate Jones Café @ One Nineteen and it was a major success with over 50 participants. The fabulous guest speaker was the Hon. Bronwyn Taylor MLC, NSW Minister for Mental Health, Regional Youth and Women.
The Minister and guests were welcomed by Mayor Reg Kidd who said he was looking forward to hearing about what actions the Central West Women’s Forum decides to take after this inaugural gathering. Mary Brell OAM, a member of the organising team said ‘the Central West Women’s Forum has clearly captured the imagination of local women and men. This inaugural event was over-subscribed as we had a limit of 50 for the venue and had to turn some 30 people away’.
Minister Bronnie described her leadership journey including going from being a nurse where 96% of the workforce was women to ending up in politics where 96% are men, and she feels that performance is improved with diversity and balance. She talked about the support she had received from family and male and female colleagues on her journey. Amanda Spalding introduced the Minister and facilitated the question and answer session and Gerri Colless thanked the Minister. There were questions and comments from participants particularly about issues that concerned people like encouraging women from all walks of life to be involved in the Forum by making sure events are affordable; what can we do keep girls in education and how can we help women with financial literacy so they can be independent? In response the Minister talked about the importance of early childhood education and the importance of a child’s first1,000 days at school. Councillor Joanne McRae asked Bronnie to talk about her skills and those she was still working on and the reply was that thinking before you speak is something she was working on and skills included being confident in public speaking and choosing a great support crew. There was very lively networking and participants and those unable to attend were asked to complete a survey to shape the future of the
Central West Women’s Forum. The evening ended with proposals for the next steps led by Cheryl Pope to develop the Central West Women’s Forum into an influential advocacy group that will give voice to women of the Central West who want to make a difference, achieve results and influence the choices available across the region. The Minister encouraged the Forum to approach her with ideas and to visit the NSW Parliament. Members of the Forum are linked by their desire to have a strong region known for its commitment to excellence in leadership. The survey responses will be collated and all interested parties will be contacted to take the Central West Women’s Forum forward with future events and projects. t’s is one of the advantages working somewhere like Orange City Life that when you see something that strikes you as unusual or interesting, you can simply go and ask about it. So, when I spotted Thomas Freeman casually pull bagpipes out of his car and commence to play in Robertson Park on Friday, I decided to go find out what he was up to. “I’m down from Port Macquarie doing some work with NetWaste, they’ve brought me in for one week a month and I just like to get out on a lunchbreak and have a bit of a blow on the bagpipes,” said Thomas. “Normally, back in Port Macquarie, I go surfing on my lunchbreak, so when I’m in Orange this is an alternative.” Thomas picked up the bagpipes just three years ago and plays with the Hastings Pipe Band in Port Macquarie. He has dabbled with guitar in the past, but the bagpipes have him hooked. “This was a hobby I just stumbled into and it has become quite an
addiction, I can’t quite cure myself of it. I’m just like a bit of a bull at the gate, whatever I’m passionate about I tend to take it to the enth degree” said Thomas. “But it is a bit of fun really and it is quite a challenging instrument. I also quite like that it gets you in touch with a lot of people in the community. Often with local pipe bands you can just walk in and say you’d like to learn and there are older guys who have a lot of knowledge, who have been playing all their life, who are more than happy to teach you. “Being a folk instrument, a lot of it is handed down via simply sitting opposite someone and have them listening to you playing and telling you what you are doing right and what you are doing wrong.” When not surfing or playing the pipes, Thomas is also a member of a local men’s choir and somehow found time to publish a book. “I like history and I’ve written a little history book on the specific beach that I live on in Port Macquarie, so that took me about two years,” he said. “I find plenty of time for hobbies, the hard thing is finding time for work!"

fter many years at the helm, Kristy Armstrong and Verity Williams are passing on the role of Group Leader of the Australian Breastfeeding Association’s (ABA) Orange Group to Heather Jones. All the mums who have been involved in this group over the years would like to say a huge thank you to Kristy and Verity for their many hours of volunteering in recent years. Heather, who has been part of the group is now stepping up to fill the big shoes left by Kristy and Verity. “I’m very excited and am looking forward to continuing the group’s efforts to support families in the Orange Region with breastfeeding and early parenthood,” said Heather. “Australian Breastfeeding Association’s main role is to connect with mothers and provide mother-to-mother support. Each ABA volunteer has been through
BY MELISE COLEMAN parenthood and can provide others with empathy, understanding and a space to feel heard. Our group is very welcoming and non-judgemental. We welcome all mothers whether breastfeeding or not who would like to engage with other parents and learn more about parenting.” The Orange Group provides a lot of valuable support services for local mothers such as: • Fortnightly morning teas with various topics for mothers to learn about breastfeeding and parenting (such as popular topics, sleep, returning to work and family foods), connect with one another and have a space where they can have face-to-face access to a trained volunteer breastfeeding counsellor. • Breastfeeding Education Classes for expectant parents to learn about breastfeeding, its biology, and what to expect when breastfeeding a newborn baby.
• Evening catchups for mothers who work during the day or prefer to leave toddlers at home in bed and engage with other mothers later in the day. • Breast pump hire — the ABA have a trained volunteer breastfeeding counsellor who hires out pumps to both ABA members and non-members (half price for members). • Offer support and information by pairing with the local Child and Family Health Nurses to attend the New Parents Group and with Midwives at the Orange Heath Service to attend Antenatal Classes to maximise the number of families who can access our services. “We want to make sure that our local Mums can access support when they need it,” Heather added, “For any Mums out there who are interested in coming to see what we are all about, come anytime, we understand that kids don’t run to schedule!”

While many of us are happy to say we evolved from nothing, as the big bang theory says (and which I was reminded of on a recent outing to the Parkes radiotelescope), I find it more satisfactory to consider that everything had to come from somewhere. The Bible says of God “you knit me together in my mother’s womb”. As I started growing in my mother I became not just a bunch of cells but a person – me. I don’t know how that happens, and I can’t think how it could happen, except if it is done by the God who gives life. And I am thankful to him for it.

BIG THUMBS UP to the emergency staff at Orange Health Service. They introduce themselves by their first names
only and while maintaining their efficiency, they are pleasant, courteous and friendly. Whether they were doctors, nurses, assistants I could not fail but to be impressed. I went into the emergency section at 5pm on Sunday 20th May and was in the operating theatre by 11pm. No long delays in my experience at least. I would like to particularly mention Kerel, Louise, Tim, Francis and Peta in the emergency department and Toni and Heather in the surgical ward. There were numerous others whose name tags I cannot recall but who all were cheery and helpful. A first rate staff at a first rate hospital.
THUMBS UP to Bissy’s Café. Our club recently held a meeting in one of their rooms. They provided delicious food and drinks at a very reasonable price. Highly recommend this venue.
