Markets figured prominently around Orange last weekend and by all accounts, plenty of people took advantage of them. On Saturday a huge crowd attended the Orange Farmers Market at the Showground and then on the Monday, the Molong Markets attracted loads of people from near and far. My wife and I attended both events and I’d have to say both were worth the effort, especially at Molong. Well done to all concerned.
04 Winterbrass is coming this weekend
I was also thrilled to see Alf Manciagli’s name among the Queen’s Birthday Honours. Alf has been a long-time friend and strong supporter of me personally and what we do here at OC Life. For now, I just want to acknowledge his award, I’ll follow this up with more about our association in the next week or two. To follow up the survey we ran on the Robertson Park toilet issue, I spent about 3 hours watching the recent Council meeting streamed live to see what happened. Sadly, for me it was one of the last issues raised and to be honest, I was gob-smacked by the lack of discussion that took place. I thought that given the recent publicity over the issue, and that it’s become a local joke, I really thought a decision to provide a toilet of some sort would be made. But alas, we all have to “hold on” for a bit longer. Council resolved to go back to the CWA and seemingly revisit that option again. On a brighter note, the Put Orange First Small Business Ideas Forum, held at the Parkview Hotel last Thursday after work, was well attended. Around 50 local business people heard what Put Orange First is trying to do and then tossed around some ideas for the way forward. There was plenty of enthusiasm and energy on display and the group is now collating what was said to take follow up action as needed. It was great to see so many business people in the same place at the same time, and all keen to take Orange forward.

n Sunday June 16, ease yourself into winter with the warm sounds and versatility of brass music spanning nearly five centuries when the City of Orange Brass Band presents Winterbrass. The Band is now under the Conductorship of Mr Philip Rees OAM. Phil brings with him a wealth of experience and members of the band are enjoying the new repertoire that they are currently learning. You can learn more about Philip in this issue. Phil said, “We are aiming to do several concerts a year rather than one very big one. This Winterbrass Concert will celebrate the start of a new season. Brass instruments are traditionally incredibly versatile instruments, they can be played outdoors, and they can be easily transported. So, traditionally they were used for hunting, festive occasions, royalty, warfare, all of those things- the music looks at those different ideas, we are playing a dance form the 1500s and dances from the last 10 or 15 years as well.” “It’s going to be a very family friendly concert, so children are very welcome to come along. If you’ve ever thought about playing an instrument, this is the concert for you.” The Intermediate Band conducted by Mrs Megan Hughes will also be presenting several items. The upcoming Winterbrass Concert will be held on Sunday, June 16 at the Orange Regional Conservatorium at 2:30pm, $5 for adults and a gold coin donation for students. Tickets are available at the door or from band members.

A LETTER TO MY FUTUREFUTURE SELF
I’ve read plenty of ‘Letter to the Younger Me’ letters and it got me thinking, there’s no point in doing one to my past self, I’m not that person anymore, and I can’t change what has been done, but I CAN help myself in the future, so here is a very public letter to my future self. I hope it inspires you to do the same, mentally or otherwise.
Dear Melise,
PHIL “I am from Wyong on the Central Coast, we moved to Blayney in January this year, it was just time for something different. We’ve experienced the heat and the snow so far, our fire is getting a good workout now. *laughs* I really liked this area; I did a bit of work up here for a couple of weeks and I was just really impressed by the attitude of people and the arts seems to be
REES really well valued here. I’m a Musician, I teach Brass and Piano. I love music, love listening to music, love making music, love teaching - love being with people. All of my adult life has been about teaching and music. I don’t think I can recall ever not wanting to be a musician, I grew up in a family where music is very valued, my kids are musical as well. Myself, I play piano and lower
brass. Its so empowering, its not age exclusive, you can be making music with someone that’s 20 years younger or older than you and it doesn’t matter. I love playing in a band or singing in a choir, you come from so many different backgrounds and experiences in the world, and on that day, you come together and work together and everyone is valued.”
By now, I hope your still sipping on rum, (maybe step it up to rum cocktails?) and catching up with friends, even if it’s from the comfort of a retirement village. If not, I hope for your sake they have lowered the retirement age, so you’ll be there soon, or maybe you’ve escaped to Bali to live a life of luxury. In that case... go girl! In all seriousness, I’m writing you a letter to keep you on track, I know you worry, and that’s not good for our face, so I’m giving you a cheat sheet on what’s important, and what’s worth making time for. Spend time with people you love. That’s first and foremost, always. I hope you have kept in touch with all the people who have changed you. I hope you have kept them close, through the good and the bad times. I hope you remind them of how important they are to you, and they know how grateful you are for them. Pick up the phone, make some plans. Trust that things will work out
or change them if you don’t like the charted course. Eat food cooked from scratch (I know you are too lazy to do now). Go outside, even when Netflix is calling. Teach young people how to shake someone’s hand properly (what’s with the flimsy hands people?). Write down your thoughts. Tell your stories. Tell others’ stories. Listen. Set goals, both crazy and reasonable. Never stop holding on to hope. It may cause pain, but you will get through. Are you still eating burger rings? Good. Despite the frustration, I hope you’ve forgiven all the people who have hurt you, and I hope their pain doesn’t matter as much to you anymore. I hope you’ve filled your life with people who only lift you up. But above all of it, be present, hug those around you. Ask them how they are doing, and truly listen. LOVE your family unconditionally, continue to stir trouble with your Dad so people continue to tell you how alike you are, and you can see his one in a million grin, and be a shoulder of strength for your Mum. I hope you’ve found the skin you feel the most comfortable in, and I hope you never take it off. I hope you have managed to figure it all out, the ins and outs of life. If not, you’ve got time, you might discover it all laying on a beach in Bali..

Women’s Forum TO LAUNCH THIS WEEK

his quote came to mind when I caught up with Mary Brell, Cheryl Pope and Amanda Spalding, along with Jerry Collis, these women are the masterminds behind the newly formed, Central West Women’s Forum, who are holding their first meeting this Saturday. The group hopes to give a voice to women of the Central West who want to make a difference. Its diverse membership will provide and leverage, support, encouragement and develop opportunities for each other within its resources, as well as coordinating high powered external speakers and experiences. Mary explained, “It was a group of us that got together thinking that we really needed to do something for women in Central West NSW. Particularly now, with issues including the drought and businesses. “We certainly want it to be a powerful network group for women out here, not just Orange, we are talking Bathurst, Parkes, Dubbo and surrounds.
Somebody might like to go into business, or someone might want to increase their leadership skills, we will have people in the group to encourage and support that.� The guest speaker for the inaugural evening will be the Hon. Bronnie Taylor MLC, NSW Minister for Mental Health, Regional Youth and Women. The Minister will speak about her leadership journey and issues she has noticed in Rural NSW, as well as answer any questions the forum may have. “It’s not a ‘women only’ group, men are certainly invited to come along. We want to work with and alongside men to make the best of any organisation. We all come with different skills, let’s bring our skills together and make the organisation the best it can possibly be. I think women have certainly struggled their way through a lot of issues and what we are trying to do is support them. Let’s make them stronger out here in the west,� said Mary. Cheryl added, “It’s about collecting voices and taking that forward. Whether it’s true or not, there

The hope is for the Women’s forum to meet quarterly, this first event will be an excellent opportunity to network and shape the future of the Central West Women’s Forum. BY JONATHAN ROE It was Melanie’s Deputy Principal who nominated her for the award, which recognises the work of exceptional teachers and how the programs they’ve put in place are benefitting students. “I run the Orange High Cattle team, that is probably the biggest thing we’ve done in the last little while,” said Melanie. “At the moment there’s about 30 kids turn up every Friday afternoon for the cattle team. And in that last year or so we have also established an Agriculture Club that runs at lunch time.” Melanie was also instrumental in establishing a Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden at the school. “I think it is the only one or only one of a few in secondary schools in NSW,” she said. Melanie grew up in Orange and is herself an alum-
range High School teacher, Melanie Campbell has been named as one of three finalists and is in the running for the Teacher of the Year award at the prestigious Australian
Education Awards. Melanie is the only finalist from Western NSW for the annual awards, presented by The Educator magazine. “It’s all a little bit unreal at this point,” said Melanie, who is the agriculture teacher at Orange High. “I knew about it a little before it was made public, but it was only when they announced it, that we knew there were only three nominations. That was when it hit home that this is really cool.”

We have kids who are looking at going further afield and going into agriculture as a long-term prospect — that is exciting! One cuddly little teddy bear CAN MAKE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE

Our emergency service volunteers often see people at the worst moments in their lives, during house fires or following serious road accidents. While these incidents are traumatic enough at any age, it can be a particularly distressing time for children.
I
t is a time when a simple act of kindness can make a huge difference. “We keep these teddy bears in our trucks, a lot of brigades have them, and any job with kids involved we usually try to give them a bear and it helps,” said Lucknow Rural Fire Service Brigade Captain, Michael Bloomfield. The Canobolas Rural Fire Service district has been gifted 50 ‘Gentle Bears’ that are now ready to support and care for children around Orange. Gentle Bear was the brainchild of insurer Gallagher Bassett and the South Australian Police Department who wanted to do more to help the children they were coming into contact with when responding to 000 calls. Gallagher Bassett has now partnered with Insurance and Care NSW (icare) to bring Gentle Bear to NSW. So far, 2500 Gentle Bears have been donated to 46 RFS stations across NSW, with another 2,500 to follow next year. Previously the Rural Fire Service had been supported via keen knitters within local communities who made what were known as ‘Trauma Teddies’, a tradition that is still in place today in some small towns. An astounding 14,000 vehicles a day travel the stretch of road between Orange and Bathurst,

which makes it a hot spot for vehicle accidents, said Captain Bloomfield. “We do mainly car crashes out here; on this section of road we average a car crash every month and we’ve seen several fatalities — we’ve had to hand out a few bears,” said Captain Bloomfield. And it is not only children who benefit, he said. “We find that some adults are very stressed in these situations. We gave one to a lady at a housefire, who lost every possession she had, so she walked around for a couple hours holding a teddy bear,” said Mr Bloomfield. “I’ve had a lady crying on the ground and we couldn’t console her, and we gave her a bear and she was right. And kids are the same; it gives them something to cuddle, it definitely helps.” RFS volunteers are also not immune to the mental stress of being involved in traumatic incidents. Being able to do something to help someone, no matter how small, can be healing in itself. “It is good for all ages and probably even good for us,” said Mr Bloomfield. “You feel helpless at times. There is not a lot you can do — the Ambos are doing their job and we back them up — but you see someone who is distressed, you hand them the teddy bears and it makes a difference.”

Sad time for Day 2 Day BY MELISE COLEMAN
adly the Day 2 Day Program in Orange has seen its last day due to a cease in funding. To help keep spirits high, clients and support workers celebrated the day with ‘An end of an Era - Masquerade and Bare Foot Bowls Day’ at Orange City Bowling Club. ‘Day 2 Day’ is a program for people who are socially isolated, to assist them to re-connect with the community. It aimed to assist clients in developing new skills and re-learning old
ones, developing social networks, develop confidence and accomplish personal goals. The program has run in Orange for 10 years and was available to anyone over the age of 18. Coordinator, Carol Johns has been with the program for six and a half years and is certainly sad to see it finish up. “I have seen a lot of clients over the years return to work or study and have moved onto different areas and had success which is great.� “Our clients live independently in the commu-

nity; we were there to give a bit more support and enable them to be able to live in the community without the stigma.� “We would often take clients down the street for day trips, have some coffee and lunch, we also taught them living skills, like cooking and craft, just things to help them be a bit more independent, things that we may often take for granted.� “A highlight for the clients is the holiday we take them on each year, previously they have visited Lightning Ridge, Sydney, Katoomba
and Echuca, this week they will have their final holiday with the program in our Capital, Canberra. It’s giving them something they wouldn’t normally be able to do.� Margaret Dern has been a client since the beginning of the program, “I’ve enjoyed everything, it’s all been really good. I enjoy going away together and going out in groups. I want to thank our support workers and I hope they have a nice future after Day 2 Day, it’s been very good to have them around. How do I put an Advanced Care Directive in place?
How to have the conversation with your family
An Advance Care Directive is an important way of letting people close to you know your wishes for your healthcare and treatment in case you find yourself in a position where you are seriously ill or injured and are not able to communicate your wishes, or make decisions about the care you’ll receive.
The first step is to go and have a chat to your family GP. They will be able to clearly explain what an Advance Care Directive is and help you start the process. Either you or your GP can download and print an ACD booklet for you to read and work through.
Be sure to have the conversation with your family. It is best to tackle difficult topics early on, and it saves having to make decisions when emotions are high if something happens.
It’s not something we like to think about, but you don’t know what is going to happen to you, or when it might happen to you, so we recommend that people of all ages, even young adults over the age of 18, put in place an Advance Care Directive (ACD). What is an Advanced Care Directive? An Advance Care Directive is a legal document signed by you and a witness, that is usually your family GP, that allows you to: • write down and express your wishes about the medical treatment and care you would, or would not like to have; and • choose the person that will be your voice, someone you trust to speak on your behalf if a decision about your medical treatment and care must be made. An Advance Care Directive can only be used if you are unable to make your own decisions (sometimes called impaired decision-making capacity) whether temporarily or permanently if you cannot: • understand information about the decision • understand and appreciate the risks and benefits of the choices • remember the information for a short time; and • tell someone what the decision is and why you have made the decision.
Then you will need to talk to your family, talk through your wishes and reach a shared understanding
Sometimes, the hardest part about difficult conversations can be knowing where to start. You could try some of the below openers to help you: “I know it might be hard to talk about, but it’s really important to me.”
Talking openly and honestly about your wishes for medical treatment or care if something should happen to you is probably not an easy conversation to have with your loved ones, but one conversation can make all the difference.
“We’ve talked a bit about what happens after I pass away, but we haven’t spoken about what I’d like to happen in the case of an accident.”
Having the conversation may reveal that you and your loved ones do not agree. That’s OK. It’s important to know this now and continue to talk about it rather than during a medical emergency.
Be prepared to give it some time and, if necessary, have a number of conversations to make your wishes fully known and understood:
Once you have had the conversation with your loved ones, signing the ACD with your family GP makes it a legal document, but you can change your mind at any time! The final step of the process is to leave a copy of the ACD with your family and your GP so they know your wishes, and also provide your solicitor with a copy to put with your will. Your Advance Care Directive can also now be uploaded to My Health Record your new electronic health record if you have not opted out.

• Try and find a quiet space where you can speak openly and calmly. • Think about who you would like in the room. Is it your spouse or partner? Put ORANGE First! Around 50 local business people went along to the Small Business Ideas Forum arranged by Put Orange First last week. Following are excerpts from a report the organisers sent out after the meeting. Following the first Put Orange First Small Business Ideas Forum, it’s clear how passionate everyone is about Orange, how much everyone wants Orange to succeed and how much everyone loves living in Orange! Having sorted through the forms
handed in, there are a few key themes that developed: MAIN STREET APPEARANCE Many people raised this as an issue. Summer Street and side streets considered to be not aesthetically pleasing, not drawing foot traffic. LEASE COSTS Clearly an issue in the minds of many. CUSTOMER SERVICE Several people raised poor customer service as an issue when it comes to

doing business with local businesses. DEDICATED ORANGE BUSINESS WEBSITE DIRECTORY Another issue raised by several people. Several people also commented on the importance of uniting all the great groups in Orange such as Council, Orange 360, Business Chamber etc. That was pleasing to hear given it was very much a part of why we ran the Forum in the first place! Let’s build on it from here. There was also widespread
support for getting some flags up in Summer Street as a simple means of livening up the CBD. Sounds as though everyone is also hanging out the former Myer building reopening! A couple of interesting ideas worth mentioning were an Orange Artisan Hub and Orange Street Art Festival. Thank you for coming to the Forum. We will look to hold another meeting next month (not on a Thursday night!) to drill down on the key issues and ideas that
were raised. In the meantime, 8.30 am each Thursday morning at Groundstone Café is where the Put Orange First team meet up for a coffee and a yarn. Christmas Day, Good Friday and Easter Sunday are the only days we’re not open. So, it keeps me very busy, but it is very rewarding. What services do you offer for customers? Besides prescriptions we offer a lot of health services, so things like blood pressure checking, cholesterol screening, iron testing, blood glucose testing and monitoring, and this month we have asthma screening on promotion as well. We also do free medication packing for customers and free home delivery Monday to Friday as well. It has already been a terrible flu season, do you offer vaccinations? Yes, we have been quite busy this season with flu vaccinations, I know some pharmacies and medical services are running out of stock, but we still have some left. Are there any areas you would say you specialise in? We specialise in sleep apnoea services here, which is a point of difference with other pharmacies. We can test people to
see if they have sleep apnoea. We sell machines and parts for machines and can also provide consultations. We sell a lot of home health aids, so wheelchairs, walkers those kinds of things and we also specialise in compression stockings. What is it you find rewarding about being a pharmacist? I love helping our customers maximise their health, that is what we really enjoy here. We just recently ... I LOVE won a customer service HELPING OUR awards for that so that was really good recognition of CUSTOMERS all the extra work the team MAXIMISE put in. THEIR HEALTH, We have a lot of loyal THAT IS WHAT customers and we believe WE REALLY it’s really important to build ENJOY HERE... that relationship so our customers have someone who understands their medical history and can be a familiar face. BY JONATHAN ROE echnology has completely changed the way we do business, but paper can still be an issue in many offices.
Incredibly, it is estimated that 90 per cent of corporate memory exists either on paper or in computer files that are unindexed and not easily searchable. But there is a better way, says Lawrence Breen, Managing Director at Orange’s Inland Digital. For more than 20 years, the Inland Digital team have proudly been delivering technology solutions for businesses throughout the Central West. More than just printing solutions, Inland Digital has embraced digital technology to offer businesses much more, all focused on business processes. “We not only are selling hardware — for example, copiers and printers — but we can add real value for organisations by helping them with their backend processes and information management,” said Lawrence. “We offer solutions to help businesses to manage their business information more effectively. And we’ve been able to deliver that in industries such as accountancy, legal, real estate and other sectors by helping them with technology like cloud based document management and workflow solutions.” For many businesses, it can be a case of not knowing that you have an issue until they are shown the value and benefits of moving from paper-based processes. “For example, a car dealer might be great at selling cars, but their back-end administrative processes are still done in an inefficient way simply because they’ve
always been done that way,” he said. “We have had a lot of success in helping organisations migrate their data to the cloud, and put in place smart workflow processes to assist with a range of business processes, from human resources to sales, contract onboarding, accounts payable — wherever the client needs to deliver an automated solution.” As an example, Inland Digital doesn’t only showcase clients where they have delivered a solution, we’ll even highlight how they have managed these efficiencies within their own business. “We tell our story and that of other clients, highlighting where we’ve helped and what we’ve delivered, to show them what the outcome from using technology could be for their business. We’ve been able to show businesses how they can digitally track all that finer details from when a contract’s signed to when delivery is done and make sure none of those pieces are missed on the way through,” he said. “For example, at Inland Digital we’ve built all of our sign off procedures into automated, digital workflows. Our team can be anywhere and be approving contracts as an example, as they come through on their smart phone. It allows us to measure our speed of performance and also identify any areas of concern where we need to add more resources to get the job done.” Improving staff communication through the use of video conferencing technology and interactive whiteboards is another way Inland Digital have been transforming local businesses. “Interactive whiteboards have always been in demand in industries like education, however where we are seeing their adoption and impact is in commercial enterprises,” said Lawrence, who has one
of his own team members regularly participate in meetings even while overseas. “It’s more than just a video call; the great thing about the smart technology is it allows you to see the same information at once and contribute to it from a remote location. It allows you to effectively collaborate and work from anywhere — this technology can have a huge impact for businesses with remote workers or multiple offices.” Inland Digital also offer fully managed print services, which means printers are serviced and supplied with consumables, without business owners having to lift a finger. “We can manage the device remotely, we know when a toner cartridge has been replaced, so we direct ship one straight away and our team can be proactive, servicing the machine before it breaks down,” said Lawrence. Inland digital has developed a reputation for reliable, high-quality service that is now seeing the company expand over the Blue Mountains and into Western Sydney. It’s an exciting step, said Lawrence. “Quite often we hear about businesses in the city moving out into the country, but we have been here for 20 years and now are moving into the city,” he said. “So, we’re a regionally based business that’s expanding to provide those same products and services in the city, based on what we’ve achieved out here. It is the third largest economy in Australia behind Sydney CBD and Melbourne; it’s an exciting opportunity for us and offers huge growth potential.”

HD Awareness Orange Last week I delivered a Notice of Motion in NSW Parliament to recognise Rachael Brooking who is the driving force behind HD Awareness in Orange and throughout the state. HD Awareness Orange has produced and distributed an information pack for medical practitioners and healthcare professionals to extend their knowledge of the fatal Huntington’s Disease. I was pleased to be able to attend the launch of the information packs at Café Connect and congratulate Rachael and her amazing team from across the central west with fundraising and increasing public awareness of this genetic disease, affecting more than 600 families in NSW/ACT.
I thank you for the wonderful vote of confidence and look forward to representing all residents to the best of my ability, whether that means lobbying a government department, or getting to my feet to be a voice for you on the floor of Parliament. Speaking of Parliament, that’s where I’ve spent most of the last two weeks, where I’ve been working hard to fight for a better deal for people living in our region. Have a great week!

Boer War Remembrance Far Left: On May 31 I was honoured to attend the memorial service marking the signing of the peace treaty at Vereeniging in South Africa in 1902. The ceremony was held at the Boer War Memorial which is located at the northern end of Robertson Park. This war marked the initiation in many ways of Australian soldiers into conflict on foreign shores, and the memorial and annual ceremonies add to the rich tapestry of our district’s remembrance of those who served this country.

Too Much Sport?

Gotta love this of time of year … sport, sport, sport A wise man once said (this column started like that last week, too) “Too much sport is never enough”. I’d have to agree, especially at this time of the year. Logically, the beginning of winter in the Lucky Country coincides with summer on the other side of the world. So, as we hit our straps with rugby union, rugby league, football (soccer), hockey and netball, those in the northern world are hard at work on their basketball, cricket, tennis and a host of other addictive sporting delights. To say I was obsessed with tennis when I was a young tacker is an understatement. I’d go to bed every night hoping I’d wake up the next day as talented and Swedish as Bjorn Borg. Idol. I tried unsuccessfully for a couple of years to perfect his doublebackhand thing, it was so ridiculously accurate. I fondly remember the French Open and Wimbledons of the late 70s and early 80’s, and sitting up all night on the floor in the lounge room on my own as Bjorn taught John McEnroe lessons in both tennis and etiquette. Their battles were epic, even more epic than those between Rafa and Roger of the past decade. Those guys today are good, but the tennis with the wooden racquets that Bjorn and John played was a cut above. Just saying. Staying up all night to watch the sport from overseas is awesome – it’s like you’re the only person in the audience, watching a private showcase of brilliance. It is pretty hard not to scream at the tele when the action heats up, though. A mate of mine is a fanatical supporter of the Tottenham Hotspurs English Football club. They made the European Champions League Final, only to be beaten at the final hurdle by
Liverpool <tear emoji for him>. There’s a few mates of my young bloke who wouldn’t dare miss a single second of the NBA playoffs. They all have their favourites, and again it’s been a big year for the Aussies over there, with Ben Simmons as an All Star amongst other things. With both Cricket and Women’s Football World Cups keeping us up all night as well as the tennis, productivity at many workplaces might be just a little lower than normal for a month or so. I know Glenn Maxwell is a polarising kinda guy, but I’m in his corner to have a big world cup – I hope he gets to show those poms a thing or two. Like everyone I’m cheering for our golden girl Sam Kerr in the soccer, it’ll be hard for her to get us over the line, but we can send her good vibes and dare to dream. The Super Rugby is getting to the pointy end of its season, and it’s hard not to be in awe of the Kiwi teams. The style of rugby they play is a cut above, and they’ll be specials in the World Cup. Again, I guess we can dare to dream in the middle of the night. In the League, my beloved Bulldogs are languishing at the bottom of the table, so I’m cheering for all of the ‘ex’ Bulldogs as they run around in the State Of Origin – there’s heaps of them, sheesh. Why not get out and about in the Central West to watch and support our local sport? Again, there’s soooo much on offer, you’d have to be very fussy not to be catered for. [The Men’s All-Age B grade Football comp is a pearler, with an un-named 53 year old making a few guest appearances in goal, worth a laugh …]

hat did you get up to over the long weekend? For many it’s a nice chance to have a short mid-year break, catch up with friends and family, and just enjoy one extra day off! Things like footy, work, family life, plans for the rest of the year, maybe even politics, would have been talked about with those nearest and dearest. I wonder how much conversation centered on superannuation? I know most people find super boring. Trust me, I know that from 13 years of advising people on how important it is to take super seriously! However, the reality is that it is most likely going to form the bedrock of what you will have to rely on for your retirement.
If you find super boring and don’t take it seriously then there’s a good chance you’re sleepwalking towards a tough financial future. Many people who find super boring still understand that it’s a good thing, it just doesn’t excite them. Yet, the idea of being able to stop working does excite them and that’s what superannuation is all about trying to fund! There are others who genuinely think super is a bad thing. Anyone you ever hear telling you that super is a bad thing is really telling you they like paying more tax! It’s as simple as that. Super is simply a tax structure. We hear in the news about filthy rich people hoarding their wealth in tax havens like the Cayman Islands. They do that for the simple reason of paying less tax. Super is the opportunity
for ordinary Australians to pay less tax on their investments – legally. Think about it this way… there are only really four things you can invest your money in – cash, fixed interest, property and shares. The choice is whether you do that inside super or outside super (or a combination). The investments don’t change, the only difference is whether you are holding investments in a 15% tax environment or paying tax on those investments at your marginal tax rate, which is likely to be twice as high or more. Yes, there are many rules that apply to super, but with a little help you can take advantage of the rules and create a fortune. Flip your thinking when it comes to super. When I ask people, “What’s the biggest disadvantage of super?”, I almost
always get the same answer, “You can’t touch it”. I immediately ask, “What’s the biggest advantage of super?”, and it’s like a lightbulb moment for many people when they realise that having that money out of reach is the reason why it works! If you can’t touch it, you can’t spend it. If you can’t spend it, that money is working hard to help you reach a position to one day be able to say you can afford to stop working. Without compulsory super, how do think you’d be going towards achieving that? Yes, super is compulsory. You have to have it, so why not make it work hard for you? After all, it is your money. 50 years of the Malynley Shield By Melise Coleman The annual inter-school sporting competition between Orange High School and Gosford High School continued last week and this one was quite a special one for all involved as this was the 50th year. Over 400 students from Gosford travelled to Orange for the highly anticipated two-day competition. Students battled it out in different sporting codes including Soccer, Rugby League, Volleyball, Hockey, Chess etc. We caught the opens game of Netball between the two schools, to which Orange High came away victorious! The trend continued as Orange High beat Gosford in the final overall tally of sports and they were announced victors of the 2019 Malynley Shield. Well done OHS.

A collector’s weekend in paradise A
ntique and jewellery lovers are set for a big weekend in Orange! The Orange Zonta Club’s 36th Antique, Jewellery and Vintage Fair is on again bringing the best traders from across Australia right to our doorstep. From the opening gala on Friday evening (14 June) until Sunday (16 June), the fair offers a fantastic opportunity to come, see and buy: fine estate, period and costume jewellery; French, English and Australian Colonial furniture; fine porcelain and crystal and a whole range of collectibles and beautiful antiques. “Whether you are a serious collector, someone looking for that unique piece of jewellery for yourself or a loved one, or need something special to add to your home, this is the place to find it,” said Kerry Ferguson of the Zonta Club of Orange. “You will also be helping Zonta Orange to provide support to women and families across Orange and internationally as this is our major fundraising event of the year.” Regular exhibitor Karen Blacklows of Second Chance Collectables said there is so much on show at the fair that you never know just what will catch your eye. “That’s the beauty of the hunt, you just don’t know what you are going to find,” said Karen. “Pop over and have a good look around, because there are so many different things there from little thimbles all the way through to large
pieces of furniture and lots in between — It might just start off your collecting!” said Karen, who is excited to be bringing something special to the fair this year. “We’re taking rare Australian Chocolate diamonds, from the Argyle mine, for the very first time. We will also have pink diamonds there as well — that is another first for the fair — and we will have some really good Australian handcrafted Jewellery as well,” she said. “It is a fantastic event and it helps Zonta put a lot of money back into our local community.” With the money raised at last year’s fair Zonta we were able to give assistance to local domestic violence support services, provided scholarships for women from the Central West studying fine arts and healthcare, and sent 700 birthing kits to Sulawesi in Indonesia after their devastating earthquake and tsunami last year. The Antique, Jewellery and Vintage Fair is held at the Orange Function Centre, Eyles Street Orange. It opens on Friday with a catered Gala night from 5:30pm – 8:30pm for $25 per person, and on Saturday 10am – 5pm and Sunday 10am – 4pm for $7 per person There is an on-site café open from 11am to 3pm if you want to meet friends for lunch or afternoon tea and also a coffee cart. Lisa Devereaux had always been partial to a bit of dressing-up, but now she has taken it to a whole new level. “Just for parties and things, it is a bit of fun and who doesn’t like dressing up?” said Lisa. “My family gets quite involved too. We love Halloween and enjoy getting dressed up for that and we’ve made our own costumes from time to time for the kids’ birthdays – it’s just fun.” But a few weeks ago, Lisa decided to turn playing with dress-ups into her own home business and purchased Mac-ATTIRE Costume Hire. “We only bought the business a few weeks ago off another lady who was well established in Orange,” she said. “It was a spur of the moment thing, but it is something that I’ve generally always had an interest in and now I’ve got an excuse to sit there and play with wigs and do silly makeup tutorials. You get a bit bored and say hey what will I be today — it’s pretty cool!” The sudden influx of costumes, props and accessories has definitely been a hit with Lisa’s two children.

“The kids love it and can’t wait for book week coming up soon. There’s hat and wigs and masks — so many things!” she said. Although, the children aren’t onboard with all of Lisa’s ideas. “I think we’d get a kick out of picking up the kids from school in costume, but my son’s not keen on the idea,” laughed Lisa. “We haven’t done it yet, but we’ve definitely thought about it and we’ve even contemplated going to their soccer games in costume!”

Rural Aid’s Farm Army rolls into Trundle for hard yakka
RURAL Aid’s Farm Army will roll into Trundle to revitalise the rural community from June 16 to 22 and support farmers experiencing hardship on the land. More than 70 volunteers will set up camp for the week in the Trundle Showgrounds to work on four farms, schools and various community projects. Trundle farmer Rhonda Milgate’s family has lived and worked on the farm for 140 years with sheep, cattle and cropping. Ms Milgate is now experiencing the worse drought of her lifetime. “It touches my heart to know the Farm Army are coming out for a week to help out and it’s unbelievable that people are giving up their time and putting their lives on hold to help us out,” she said. “Sometimes it gets so overwhelming with so much to do and the Farm Army are helping with fencing, carrying out mechanical repairs to the truck, installing a water tank, painting and doing handy work inside the house.” The volunteers from throughout Australia are from all walks of life with the common goal to make a difference working to reinvigorate the community lifting people’s spirits and forming lasting connections with country folk. Rural Aid will also provide school children with musical instruments through its Gift of Music program, boxes of Lego, stationery and even an iPad. Foresythes Recruitment will sponsor the event with the goal to let the farmers know they care with 36 employees on the ground lending a helping hand. Rural Aid will also provide country cards to help farmers purchase food for their families and much-needed goods. A Rural Aid counsellor will reach out to farmers during the visit and offer mental health support. The community also received a recent boost with a hay drop, with fodder going to local farmers to feed their livestock. Undeterred, let me use the opportunity to tell you about one of mine. Each winter the Burrow Café sells a small range of pies. Honestly, they are the best pies I’ve tasted for some time. Of course, everyone has their favourites and Orange has some beauties, but those at the Burrow are a bit different, big, chunky meat, full of flavour and unlike any others I’ve seen. Very happy to recommend them, especially the green thai curry one.

They described how Jesus had been there through their high school years. Jesus helped overcome their anxiousness and gave them an identity.
